RIP Jack Chick, for better or worse, a major contributor to the traditional gaming community.

One of the people I'm happy to see gone, I had friends through school who weren't allowed to play because their parents still believed this shit.

What was the cause of death? Did he accidentally touch a marijuana?

As one of those friends, his shenanigans only made me want it moar. We played James Bond and pretended it was D&D to fuck with parents and youth pastors.

RIP, if only for his lulzy Bible thumping comics. He's castigating Satanists and pagans with Jesus now.

If that's true, than /tg/ has never accomplished anything.

considering how much of his campaigning was done on fearmongering and baseless lies, I can't imagine Jesus would accept him too happily, especially since I have no doubt that he felt justified and completely regretless towards everything he did all the way to his dying breath.

>all's right with the world
and that's how we know he's nuts

Tell me I've actually been unknowingly summoning demons every time I played D&D? Heck, all that overcomplicated math has to be in there for some reason. It's certainly not to facilitate better roleplaying, faster plot progression, or to keep players focused.

But tell me the world is doing fine? That's just boldfaced malarkey.

Those stories still include all those old gods in the pantheon, you know. Asherah, Baal. Molech. They're there. Just labled as idols. False gods worshiped by those who started following the native canaanite religions, in addition to or instead of their original one.
>>
>>49946485
That's an awfully weak and useless god that can't even keep his commands protected well enough for people to follow them correctly if they're actually trying.
>>
>>49946509
You fell for it.
>>
>>49946605
*tips fedora*
>>
>>49946626
He's saying that in response to >>49946485's theory that Satan corrupted the Bible. It's only fedora if you gratuitously deride the Bible or Christianity in general (and possibly, by extension, spirituality in general). Making fun of specific interpretations of the Bible is fair game, especially when it's a theory about the Bible put forth by an anonymous poster on a Uyghur wall tapestry chatroom.
>>
>>49946626
If you wanna take it that route, sure. The other possible implication is that your theory on Satan sewing lies into the bible are self-inherently bunkum, and thus the issue lies in your and quite a few other peoples drastic misinterpretation of the information provided.

It's either lies and always been lies, with no powerful god capable of accomplishing anything behind it, if there is one at all.
Or it's truth, always been truth, and has been kept that way by a being that can, with its immense power, ensure that it will always do so until it has served its purpose to Him.

There is no possible middle ground. Either He can protect His commands, has reason to (the typical reason for commands being: because He wants them followed), and did. Or He gave no commands, or is incapable or simply unwilling of keeping them intact, possibly because He doesn't exist, though not necessarily, and thus could not in any way hold humanity accountable for its actions, as it would have no way of knowing His commandments due to faults strictly His own.
>>
>>49946062
If he did feel regret in the end, and repented, then yes he's chilling with Jesus. If not, weeeeellllll there's always Purgatory

Why should we be sad?

I mean this guy effectively managed to turn TTRPG into a niche hobby from all-sprawning industry and reducing the player-base to stereotyped fa/tg/uys.
>>
>>49947717
>Why should we be sad?
Because he's dead, Jim. You only do that once in your life and it's the last thing you do.
>>
>>49947717
1. it's recovering quite well all things considered. it only took some time to spread. and in that time, the medium had a chance to develop before becoming public. Consider us an unscheduled early access beta.

2. He provided us with memes. Is there really anything more you can ask from a man? If a gorilla can be revered for its meme-giving, and that for only dying, why cannot this man, having devoted a large chunk of his entire life to accidentally giving us memes, not be.. well, honored isn't exactly the right word, perhaps appreciated? by us nonetheless in his final hour?
>>
>>49942922
He produced more creative work than most fa/tg/uys ever have, at least.
>>
>>49947794
>early access beta
I'm still waiting for people to introduce elements of actual game design into tabletop games btw.
Would help get normies into it a lot, because half the rules are just about making things easier to grock.
>>
>>49946187
>>49946200
Fucking Cathars. This is why the Medieval Inquisition happened.
>>
>>49947817
4e tried that, and look what that got us.

Seriously though, OSR games often times actually have some pretty nice designs going on... except of course they are really limited in scope, being more refinement than original stuff.
>>
>>49947886
A bunch of angry grognards who didn't leave the hobby they just moved to the next closest thing, and a bunch of new normies the grognards don't like for some reason because people can't like what I don't like?

What's your point?
>>

>ever a good idea
>wanting this to happen in tabletop
Please god, no.
>>
>>49947940
too late, that's what we're experiencing now. can't you tell? This is the early access of tabletops as an entertainment medium.
>>
>>49947915
>A bunch of angry grognards who didn't leave the hobby they just moved to the next closest thing, and a bunch of new normies the grognards don't like for some reason because people can't like what I don't like?

This is my point. A large % of the hobby is actively against design that doesn't obfuscate.
>>
>>49947957
That's fine if you're aiming for new blood, anon.

"the hobby" can buy old products, or find things more suited to their tastes.

Meanwhile, you've replaced them and gateway drugged more people into the hobby as a whole.
>>
>>49947984
Nobody wants to be just the gateway drug though. See how WotC reverted from 4e with 5e? Everybody wants to retain the grogs, so they keep buying stuff.
>>
>>49948128
to retain grogs you have to have grogs in the first place. DnD has Grogs, sure. And you're right, after their scare with 4e, trying to have their cke and eat it too, they're going to do every thing they can to keep them.

But what of some new company just starting out, with no grogs to loose, and a, frankly, vast expanse of unclaimed niches to capitalize on? Maybe even stuff people have tinkered and toyed with online, but never copyrighted or had a major publication?

Alternately, there's nothing to say Wizards couldn't run two roleplaying games at once, They had two card games for a while, MtG and Pokemon. One casual, one more hardcore. If they hadn't tried so hard to throw it under the bus the same as L5R they could have had two thriving markets on their hands. Its not like the two share a huge amount of the same fanbase or even draws. They wouldn't have leeched off each other.

Or even as some anons had suggested, they could have released 4e as a differently named product (thus avoiding chick's D&D stigma) while simultaneously attracting new blood and not scaring off the old.

The point is, you're thinking much too narrowly. Having product tailored for grogs in the hobby and having product tailored especially for new blood in the hobby aren't mutually exclusive.
>>
>>49948263
So... what do normies/potential newblood want in a tabletop game anyways? Besides easy to understand?
>>
>>49947717
>I mean this guy effectively managed to turn TTRPG into a niche hobby from all-sprawning industry and reducing the player-base to stereotyped fa/tg/uys.

my hero
>>
>>49948283
There's a difference between easy to grasp with room for complexity and easy to understand with no depth.

Anyway, why do people play RPGs?

1. Because it's what nerds do and they want to try it.
2. Because they like fantasy and want to consume more fantasy media.
3. They want to play games in settings they like and enjoy or ones that allow them to play in scenarios and circumstances like the settings they enjoy.

They just need exposure and groups of newbies with a good DM.

Lots of well made advertising, something like game nights that are better designed like FMN (albeit having points and leagues is kinda silly), and maybe trying youth programs with easier rules but fleshed out everything (as opposed to current Basic D&D, which just trims out classes and Races for whatever reason).

People are people anon, that jock over there is obsessed with football, and might not have time to read extensively and watch the latest series. He obviously will like any trope-filled story that comes along. Maybe the cheerleader reads lots of Fantasy, and you'll have to make a really good campaign. But guess what? Both of them are nervous around new people, exactly like every other human being. They won't just seek out a group to play a game they've never heard about. Exposure us necessary, and good writing is as well.

Speaking of writing: How mechanics are written isn't everything, but speaking from experience 3.5 had too much prep math. 5e has significantly scaled back on that, and its explanations are really easy to explain as a DM. Asking "Which of these skills would you like to be good at?" Is much easier than "You have X skill points, and can put up to X us any of these, but up to X in these."
>>
>>49949060
That reminds me, can you run a SMT game in Testament ? There's a copy in my local half-price and I need to know before I buy.
>>
>>49949127
Testament is meant for games set in the Biblical Middle East, right? You'd probably have better luck using a system that's actually designed to handle the modern world.

And this is a bad thing because? Becoming niche for a time is the best thing that can happen to a hobby. Inaccessibility creates a texture, it insulates a hobby from the larger culture for a while and so strongly divergent memes develop within the hobby that "normies" cannot get. That texture is part of what makes gaming culture so fun to get into, it is what makes it a refuge for social outcasts for whom the presence of greater society is dehumanizing and painful.

Now gaming has more or less returned to the mainstream, but it carries this legacy of being underground and niche, the older players remember those days, and it brings with it a sort of resilience to mainstream norms and culture, which prevents things from being rendered down into the grayish slop that inevitably occurs when a medium of entertainment becomes too mainstream. At least, for a while.

I think we owe 'ol Jack a debt of gratitude. Sure he was a crazy protestant snake-handler, but he added a little bit of controversy to the tapestry of /tg/. I, for one, would not erase it.
>>

>>
>>49947717
I fail to see how it is even remotely likely that Jack Chick was responsible for that.

RPGs declined not due to the Satanic Panic but due to 'overfishing' (2e onwards) and the fact that the vast majority of RPG vidyas are based off D&D, scratching the itch quite nicely.

Video killed the radio star.
>>
>>49947886
4e fucked up partially due to WotC aggressively alienating 3e fans and ditching Paizo and partially due to the tragic murder suicide that killed its online tool aspect. 4e had many many flaws but I don't think they were really what the problem was.

>For a time
Not sure how about you, but because of that old fart, MOST of TTRPG history went in niche exclusion. It culminated by early 00s, where there was literally NOBODY else, but grognards and neckbeareders left, making the entire thing simply toxic.
And what's worst, it went along 3.X marketing campaign, rising the current generation of unwashed villagers playing game in the deep delusion they are what makes the hobby great.

Again - why should I care? Literally dozens of people die every minute. One old fart this or that way is meaningless. Especially since he stopped having any influence over the hobby after late 80s.
All the perpetually repeated memes are on average 25 years old, That also tells how bad the scene is itself, if the biggest thing ever happening to it was three decades ago.

Correct, the old panel is meant to be bad too. Note the Bible being ignored on top of the TV. If you ever do anything that's not worshipping Jesus, you're an awful person in Chick's book.

Chick's trying to say it's even worse now, though, since people are watching shows that glorify homosexuality.

Yes, but their reasons for it vary. Some Protestants, like Catholics, still believe the Eucharist is the ACTUAL body and blood of Christ, while other Protestants (including Jack Chick) think it's purely symbolic.

There's a whole tract about all of this, in which Chick explains that Catholics literally worship cookies.

>>
>>49953762
Are yoy saying you're as stupid as a goldfish?
>>
>>49954670
The evidence he's bringing up probably isn't wrong, but he's not taking into account how religion will change over time. The Yaweh of the hebrews used to be a storm god more fitting for nomadic peoples, but when they settled their traditions changed, especially with contact with nearby civilizations like Babylon and Persia. And then those ideas end up getting mixed with Greek and Roman thought as Christianity develops. The only reason Jack can even make the argument that he does is that he's discounting how a 'pagan' religion can be influenced by nearby religions and evolve into its own faith. Of course a desert-dwelling people would have a traditional reverence for the moon, which would be worked into a new faith influenced by contact with the Byzantines and old Zoroastrianism.
>>
>>49956149
Also, considering every Chick Tract ever somehow involves Heaven or Hell, it's worth mentioning the Jews never cared much about the afterlife. Those ideas only came around after they'd had contact with the Persians, Greeks, and Romans, all of whom believed in an afterlife that rewards the good and punishes the evil.

In other words, Jack Chick's just as much of a heretic as everyone else.
>>
>>49956149
Well yeah, but if a religion purports to be the "one truth" then it can't admit to having changed over time. That'd mean having been (or even currently being) wrong.

Other way around. From the perspective of the heaven lies, we're all autistic five-year-olds.

Not ready for school yet, can't listen or interact with the real world worth a damn, we don't interact at all except to demand our wishes be met immediately, even if said demands are not healthy (like practically every autistic kid, we all have a sweet tooth, spiritually speaking. Basically, as fallen mortals we are locked inside our own heads and largely unwilling to force ourselves to become functional.

While that was a factor, I think the real trick there was accessibility. The biggest irony surrounding Jack Chick was that, despite his persecution complex making him claim society hates Christians, he was pretty damn anti-Christian himself.

He hated Catholics, he hated Orthodox Christians, he hated Mormons, he hated Jehovah's Witnesses, and he hated the more liberal branches of Protestantism like Methodism, Episcopalianism, and any others who think "You know, maybe we SHOULDN'T be dicks to homosexuals."

If your beliefs differed from Chick's in the slightest, you're just a Satanist posing as a Christian who's in on the conspiracy.

Or maybe Jack Chick was secretly a Satanist all along and his tracts were designed to make Christians look bad.

The 1 corinthisans quote translation is wrong.

It actually states that true love is not envious.

True love IS jealous, very much so in fact. The difference between envy and jealousy is that envy is the desperate desire of something you don't have and have no right to.

Jealousy is something you did have and was taken away by whatever means. In the old testament you will see examples of God being "Jealous" towards his peoples when they are seduced by foreign influences.

Never once in a proper accurate translation does it say he is envious.

There is a lot of infighting that goes on between the different Christian sects, you know. At its worst, denominations can split over slight eschatological disagreements. If I remember correctly, there are two different types of Amish distinguished only by whether or not they allow zippers (although to be fair, the Amish are a particularly weird edge case). When you have a religion as old as Christianity with as long a history of splitting up and regrouping as Christianity, that's what happens.

This isn't even getting into the really weird versions of Christianity like Gnosticism (>>49946171 >>49946187 >>49946200 >>49946217 >>49949060)

The setting already has the New World Order, blood-mages worshiping the Mother Goddess, video game companies trying to brainwash kids into Satanic acts, role playing games literally being evil, All-American Protestant witch-hunters with superpowers, evil vampire conspiracies in the Catholic Church, murderous feminist werewolves, devil-worshipping idolaters, Gypsies with Gypsy magic, sinister Asian super-vampires invading Commiefornia and God knows what else.
Literally everything that Jack Chick believed in is already there. Especially the older editions had some seriously wacky D&D monsters going on, and just plugging those things into a game of Hunter: the Reckoning gives a perfect Chickverse game.

Jack Chick's brand of Christianity could be called Maltheism.

God exists, but he's a real asshole. If you're not on his team, you are fucked. Luckily, to be on his team, you just need to follow some arbitrary rules. Don't worry about being a "good person" or "being kind" or "humble" or "just". All you need to do is say the right words and bang! You're on the winning team.

There are other teams - Gaia, Zeratul, Cthulhu, Ozzy Osbourne, the Catholics, the Jews, the Irish, the Mexicans, and the Ecologists.

But they're all fucked. Our team is going to win and they are going to suffer, horribly, forever.

Because fuck them. Our team's the best.

But in this case, it's an example of how Lot was an old-school, God-fearing man. Given the choice between protecting his guests and protecting his family, he chose his guests, as the Law demands. Hospitality didn't just require a bowl of peanuts and a spare towel. It was a duty, demanded by God (or sensibly written in to prevent tribes from tearing each other apart and allowing negotiation and commerce, depending on how you want to read it.).

So Lot was just being a good host.

I love things like this. It's almost like rules lawyering in D&D - you can't see past the rules to get at the /intent/ of the authors, see the themes they were trying to evoke, the stories they were trying to tell.

People get hung up trying to cross-reference books written over hundreds of years by dozens of authors into one cohesive whole because... well, it's "the Bible", right? It's one book.

If you made a book that was a mix of Byron's poems, the musings of William Blake, a very short essay on Chaucer, a screed by some rancid hack with a grudge against the Germans, bits of a cookbook, a morality play, a travelogue, and Polonius's instructions to Laertes... if you bound all that together and said "behold! A cohesive book!"

You'd be mad. Only nerds and the religious ever get so stuck they can't take a step back and look at context.

I mean guys like Chick and Texe Marrs constantly claimed that heavy metal, comic books, and D&D were the work of Satan, and I figured since I was already into the first two I might as well go for the trifecta. Condemnation from a guy like him was among the best praise the scene ever got.

It's the year of the Lord 1980, and D&D is taking the world by force.
In the dark pages of the Monstrous Manual lie summoning formulas for hundreds of Godless beasts, and the "Player's Guide" and "Dungeon Master's Guide" inform the followers of Satan of how best to defeat these creatures and herd them towards the faithful oppressed of the United States of America. Meanwhile, evolutionism, feminism and homosexuality are taught in schools, and the streets throng with damned who could be saved no matter what they do if they just put their faith in Jesus.
One day, despite what the anti-Christian propagandists have said, a Satanic cult based in a residential basement in Boise, Iowa, finally unlocks the dark secrets in the Monstrous Manual after sacrificing 666 small household animals belonging to innocent children in loving Christian families (who are loving only because they have sought forgiveness in Jesus, despite that thing with Lisa). The monsters of D&D erupt from the pages, headed by the cackling, goat-horned Satan himself, and in a matter of days, the heartland of America is turned into a wasteland of marauding "adventurer parties" who have made deals with the Devil to escape into their role-playing game characters. They slaughter monsters and humans alike for their "quest giver NPCs", sinister mouthpieces of Satan disguised as elves and other monstrous races, and the faithful are treated as the most dangerous kind of monsters because they hold faith in Jesus, the one thing that can finally destroy the armies of Satan.
The sinister strategicians of Satan, the Dungeon Masters, hole up in deep caverns that were once steam tunnels used for D&D suicides, madly scouring the Monstrous Manual for summons from Hell that can defeat the valiant Christians of America.
They might be scattered, their guns scarce, their houses dashed to splinters and their faith rocked - but it is not broken.
>>
>>49983949
Armed with only their faith and whatever weapons they can scavenge, the oppressed Protestant minority of 1982 United Dungeons of America (ruled personally by Satan, the Horned One, and his council of New-Age Healers spreading evolutionist propaganda to the betrayers and deceived innocents holed up in the cities safe from the adventurers) fight to destroy the Empire of the Antichrist himself.
The role-players, the video-gamblers, the drug addicts and the idolaters might finally have gotten their way. The people worship Gaia and Ixchel, and the adventurers of the Godless wastes that were once the Protestant heartlands of North Carolina, Kansas, Arkansas, Texas, Iowa and Idaho worship Erythnul and Hextor.
The huddled communes of Christians left are tormented by roving packs of adventurers who have made animal sacrifices in exchange for becoming their twisted, devil-worshipping role-playing characters.
The faces of Satan, Moradin, Corellon Larethian and Gruumsh, churn forth more and more monstrous races to muddy the purity of the American race and force them to compromise on their faith by bringing Satan into their families.
The husks of the White House, the Pentagon and countless other government buildings were sold by the Communists to make into training dungeons for adventurers, where they slaughter stand-ins for Christians amidst irreplaceable artifacts of the faithful era.
But the faith in Jesus Christ still stands strong.
Imagine a post-apocalyptic setting populated by D&D monsters and player races, with Communist mega-cities where children are indoctrinated into believing in evolution by feminist werewolves and New-Age healers who give free brainwashing drugs for selling out Christians and parroting homosexual rhetoric.
Bands of Christians scavenge the land for weapons and food, resisting the evil whispers of foreign countries who do not know Jesus telling them that the rest of the world can help - for the only way to be saved is to accept Christ.

There's already a Christian D&D knockoff that was made in the 1980s specifically to promote Christianity and lure kids away from D&D.
>>
>>49982474
One of his daughters was married. Two not.

Though you have a good point about them probably not being as virgin as their father hoped. Then again, two or so chapters later they're super worried about how they were still virgins and had no children so they drugged their dad and dateraped him, so maybe the amorality of Sodom affected them in different ways.

There's a difference between that and a game made with a bit of meta-awareness and modern game design.
The D&D knockoff was fun for neither Christians nor atheists, going by how it never comes up, and if you want it to be a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Jack Chick that's still playable by normal roleplayers, you'd need to build a new game.

It's called DragonRaid, and it's awful. It's an imitation D&D made by a Christian pastor who wanted to lure impressionable young people away from satanic D&D by using a Christian ruleset.

He didn't really know much about D&D, so the rules are insane.

>>

Not a new system, a new game.
The system is just one part of a game, and if you change the fluff entirely along with the setting as well as having to introduce new mechanics and player options, you're already looking at a new game.
The World of Darkness and FEAR games use the same system, but they're all standalone games.

I mean, they raped their dad because they were worried about not bring able to find hustands in the wilderess that was their new home after the fall of Sodom.
They certainly didn't leave that city innocent little snowflakes. But I could see him having prevented actual behavior, much to their chagrin.

In fact, after seeing the corruption of the city, and the conversion of the one daughter who refused to leave I could see him actively refusing to marry them to the locals long after they were past the usual age for such, which would explain why the aforementioned incestuous mutiny rape happened almost immediately. They were worried about biological clock.
>>
>>49985407
>and some other cool stuff I can't remember.
Giant dogs, plentiful booze, and a nameless, longing emptiness that could never be filled until the discovery of the potato?
>>
>>49985537
Would also add further explanation to why he was willing to toss them to the mob. Not only was he bound by hospitality laws, treated sacred even by the surrounding Yahweh-less cultures, but if his daughters were pretty obviously too far gone anyways, might as well throw them to the evil men they had been begging to marry to protect thsee much more important guests. Let them see if it's as fun as they thought it would be.

And the only other instance we see of something like this is when in Judges, too ilustrate just how bad Israel had gotten, a very similar situation happens only instead of angels it's a guy who had just went to re-collect his cheating runaway wife. Only in that situation, the tribute offered wasn't the house-owner's daughters or even servant, but that cheating wife (she did not survive the night, btw). So i'd imagine then that Lot must have seen these two daughters in much the same way that guy saw his cheating wife, bare minimum, further giving credence to this idea that though still physically pure, he considered these two girls to be morally bankrupt.
>>
What I find to be craziest is that he simply cannot conceive atheism, like it literally cannot penetrate his brain that some people simply do not worship anything

Even the supposedly educated mom says "evolution is our religion" and the dystopian thing has people doing pagan rituals

He was completely incapable of fathoming people simply not believing in anything in particular
>>
>>49985834
Well it has to be portrayed as evil, and therefore you have to have satanic motives for everything not-protestant.
>>
>>49985834
To an extent it's true though.
Anything where you begin to personify the forces acting upon you, especially if you do things that you feel can influence it or make requests from it, that's a religion. Maybe only a rudimentary one, but a religion.

So the way that a lot of people talk about nature or evolution, they are indeed treating it to pagan god status. It is the ruler of __, and you thank it for __, and isn't it's works amazing.
>>
>>49985988
That is a ridiculous copout religious people use to try and pretend nobody is REALLY an atheist.

Personification is just something people do, it does not imply religious feeling or belief.
>>
>>49985988
This is also true of things one worships, such as sex or money. To give worship to something treats it with diety status.
When someone on /gif/ says you're doing gods work after giving sauce for some porn, do you think they're talking about the Christian god? And why else would people decorate with phallic idols, as in days of old, if they did not wish to invoke and exonerate such? It may not be intentional, nor may they even be aware, but their actions clearly imply a certain amount of belief in some kind of fealty to these concepts deified.
>>
>>49985834
And they HATE god! Because they don't believe so of course they hate the god they don't believe exist.
>>
>>49959489
>My favorite passage is still the old man summoning bears to kill children who made fun of him for being bald.

The absurdity of that passage in English isn't present in the original language. An angry mob of what in the original lanuage can mean only either young men or young male servants went to kill Elisha. Them chanting "go up Elisha", meaning were going to send you to your god like your predecessor Elijah, and insulting him for being bald, which was an implication he was bald because he was a societal outcast, blasphemer, or criminal, were both serious insults that could have been construed as threats in their day.

I try not to be a super Christfag all the time but seeing this misinterpretation of the story all over really grinds my gears.
