So /tg/ how would you go about making a TTRPG version of Dead Space?

I have my own ideas that are based on Dark Heresy's systme, but they're all at home so I'll dig them up later.

Well, since we're waiting, I'd just like to point out something.

Most non-necromorphic fighting Issac has to do? It's memetic. As in, the POWER OF MAYMAYS. And while he fights it, he cannot control it. Which is the main issue of all this "Let the literal unprotected mind-fucking commence!" Attitude.

>HAS SCP TAUGHT YOU NOTHING?!

Memetics are contagious, and this one is fucking horrible. You could see these !NOT!-Orions becoming not only infected, but vectors for the marker infection to spread without the assistance of a marker itself!

Puts a while new spin on "Make us whole", though.

>Went planetside to start salvage. Making a list of all the stuff i wanna present wasn't too hard, or at least it wasn't all that difficult to prioritize. Shockdrives come first. Everyone threw a fit when i told them what it did. I seriously don't know how they haven't found it out yet. I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole crazy episode myself, and with every passing day, the likelihood of it all being a dream drips away more and more. At this point, I've kinda put that whole mess in the backseat. Thinking about how and why I'm here is getting me nowhere. time to start living for the moment.

>Found three working shockdrives from the unitologist vessels. Spare stasis and kinesis modules weren't especially hard to find. Some on-board small arms have been collected, and I think those guns we ripped off one of their gunships may just be in good enough shape to be worthwhile. Everyone says it's through, but I think a few well-spent hours will have this thing ready to go, or at least ready to show by the end of the week.

>Had the quarian crew gather up the stuff on the list. Marked out locations, gave them descriptions and sent them on their way. Kinda gives me some time to work on the gun. Danik spared so expense here. Stuff's military grade. Migrant marines saw me working on it and were especially interested. Started asking about what soldiers use in my "dimension" or whatever I'm supposed to be from. Couldn't find any SWS rifles in Danik's stash. Was afraid it would be a waste of time, but I decided to have a lintel fun and craft some stuff up. had enough materials to craft up a few mining tools. They weren't very impressed until they saw the contact beam at work. These guys are kinda odd. Every one of these people is in some way knowledgeable about tech. They're all so fascinated by what I've got here. I've had some time to set my work aside (like maybe thirty minute or an hour at best) and just explore the place. Apparently, the Rayya is one of many of these ships where this whole race lives. Nezala's story is really starting t come to life. It's really starting to dawn on me that these people, though not human, really are just people. I mean, the suits and the glowy eyes still kinda weird me out, and the fact that there's aliens not trying to rip me apart is still kind of a big deal, but, deep down, I actually feel kind of at home with them. maybe it's the cramped space and the technophilia, but hey, I won't complain.

Home at last, man, these threads never die, its almost as if they keep getting reanimated from the dead...

Pastebin for those who want to follow along:

Zaeed was almost surprised at his own curiosity, it hadn’t gotten the better of him in years. He had to admit that the prospect of a contact who’d been dead several years suddenly turning up and wanting to chat was an intriguing one. Could it be a trap? Sure, but Zaeed trusted that and Alliance shuttle wouldn’t pick up on any long range scanners.

Zaeed paused for a moment in front of the elevator absorbed in thinking about what it could all mean. “Hello Zaeed.” He started and turned to see that Thane had silently glided up beside him.

“Kryos! Shoulda known that only you could startle me like that!”
“I’m sorry, that was not my intention. You seem preoccupied, but I know better than to ask.” Zaeed blinked and looked askance. Thane only blinked his inner eyelids, saying no more.
The elevator arrived along with a cargo of harried Alliance ensigns. The two slipped inside and descended.

“It seems that soon everyone is to part ways. I’m sad to say that we’ve rarely exchanged pleasantries.” Thane’s dry and cracked voice carried a hint of sadness.
“Don’t worry yourself over it, we're both professionals, it happens. I once worked with a man for three years, nary spoke a word to each other. Best friend I ever had.”
Zaeed could swear he saw the corners of his mouth twitch upwards in a smile.
“Your memory is as good as mine sometimes. ” The doors glided open and the stuffy silence gave way to the bustling docking bay.

Zaeed made to the unattended shuttle but paused when he heard Thane.”Zaeed? One mercenary to another, we always expected to die fighting, yet here we are. I have my son to return to after this, what do you plan on doing?”
“I dunno why you’d think I’d do anything else! You and I don’t love a good fight in the same way Kryos. I plan on hunting that scum Vido to the ends of the galaxy, and making a ripe old mess on the way!”
Thane shook his head thoughtfully and let Zaeed go as he was consumed by the crowd.

The chaos made it relatively easy to slip past unnoticed, and his mean look stopped anyone from asking questions as he popped the seal on the shuttle. Zaeed knew Joker didn’t have the balls to stop him and was confident that he could investigate the signal and return before anyone raised too big of a stink. He paged the bridge.

“So... are we gonna dance or is your pelvis giving out already Joker? “
“Zaaed just what the hell are you doing up there?” It was Shepard. Zaeed cursed, this is what he got for trying to pick fights with kids in wheelchairs.

“Nothing personal Shepard, but my pays run dry and I’ve got better things to do than swap stories with a goody goody like you.”
“What’s gotten into you Zaeed?! I order you to stand down and wait to discuss whatever it is you’re doing with me once our negotiations are done.”
“No pay, no command, and I don’t need you mucking up another one of my operations again. Now order your monkey to open the bay before you have to order him to mop me off the floor.”
“Just do it Joker, we can’t have a scene just over Batarian space, were not even Alliance, remember.”

“Aye Aye Commander.” Zaeed grinned broadly as the bay doors slowly retracted to the confusion of the many dock workers. Lucky for them that the shields stopped the vacuum or a score of fine Alliance men and women would be in orbit around Kar’Shan.
>The docking clamps released and the shuttle dropped into space.

See it from a bit wider angle, mate. As Ardat, all you can do while melding is to fry the other one, to GIVE intensity, not to feel it as the one "melded". As a power freak feel-seeking one might be, this one particular feeling would elude them, would not be available. And that is where Isaac would come in handy, serving as a silver mirror. a taste of own medicine. If you would be a master of slaves all life, unable to change and willing to try it anyway, wouldn't you pounce at first opportunity to do so?

The events of the last few years raced through Isaac Clarke’s mind as the Brother Moon filled the Terra Nova’s bridge windows; The Ishimura, Titan Station, and finally the events on Tau Voltanis and the race to get off that dead world to warn Earth. Somewhere in the background Carver was shouting something at Isaac, but the fact that they were moments away from crashing made anything he had to say irrelevant. Time seemed to slow down as the ship began what was probably going to be a catastrophic crash on the surface of the ancient, unknowable space born horror. As the chair Isaac had braced himself against was ripped out of his hands as he catapulted forward, he had a moment to notice the way the bow of the ancient vessel began to buckle and splinter on impact, the spider’s web of cracks the played across the window he was rapidly approaching, and perversely the sudden energy spike in the Shock Drive.

That’s odd; Isaac had time to think calmly. Time reasserted itself, the window rushed up to meet Isaac’s helmet, and then-

Light.

Light and pain.

46 KB JPG
In a millisecond that seemed to stretch years Isaac felt as if every particle of his body had been ripped apart and scattered at unimaginable speeds. With a jolt the pain disappeared, leaving in its place a sense of dislocation not unlike a full body sleeping limb and vertigo. A second lesser impact drove what little air he had in his lungs from his body. After some inner searching he realized the blinding light was coming from a bright set of lights above him, that he was laying on his back, and someone nearby was speaking.

“-ansport complete. No ardent energy detected. Tether source unknown.”

“You mean they didn’t come from Hell?” replied a second voice.

“That is correct,” the first voice replied. “An energy spike originating outside known quantum frameworks was detected at the exact moment the tether was recalled.”

The voices sounded…odd, electronic. Further, the first voice was definitely coming from some sort of speaker in the room while the second was coming from only a few feet away. Blinking to focus his eyes Isaac rolled his head to face the speaker, and then blinked again at what he saw. A large, obviously mechanical figure was approaching him while a second figure dressed in bulky green armor stood behind the first not quite pointing a large double barreled weapon at Isaac’s head.

“How unusual,” the mechanical standing over Isaac said. “Who are you and just where did you come from?”

Isaac answered both questions by retracting his helmet and vomiting on the pristine metal floor.

How much dead tissue is required before the Marker starts animating it?
>>
>>50616877
not too much. According to the logs in DS1, cells under the microscope were starting to kill living cells as long as they were actually separated.
>>
>>50616962
This does create a bit of a plothole since blood and skin cells in a person's body are consistently dying and being replaced at a prodigious rate. If this is true than exposure to a marker signal would pretty much immediately turn people into necromorphs because a portion of most of the cell types you're carrying around is always dead.
>>
>>50615875
Im sure others have already told you despite your excuses. Do not start a thread with very little to show for it. We do not do "parking" here so you can appease your ego. /tg/ has seen a lot of writefags in its time and you are quite honestly shit at it. Maybe you will get better or maybe you will prove to be garbage like most say. Regardless, do not make other people spam threads for you and instead maybe start it yourself with a pastebin link of actual new content then commence discussion rather than what you are doing now.
>>
>>50617164
The only way to bypass this to make Markers unable to process the idea that dead cells can exist inside live things.

>No that thing's alive. I can feel the dead stuff inside it, but it's still connected to the living stuff, so the dead stuff is still alive. See?

Then allow the Marker signal undergoing self-editing recursion in Isaac's head to finally grasp the concept that as long something is dead, it doesn't matter about the particulars, fucking animate it.

>Suddenly, Necromorph outbreak.
>Find the Unitoligists! No Unitoligists?
>Find the freaky MIB from DS2:S! They aren't even here?
>Find the Marker! Where is the Marker? WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE NECROMORPHS COMING FROM?!

The only question is how are the Nu-Necros formed?
A person slowly rotting from within until their skin sloughs off?
Or chestburster style?

Suddenly, her CO has been denying her leave, her monthly pay disappeared because somehow their system magically went haywire, all sorts of crap. Can't say it's all been sunshine and roses for me either. Head's been killing me. I appreciate the space they've given me to work in, but it's not as well-ventilated as I would have liked. I mean, holy crap, even CEC would be embarrassed. We just kinda talked for a minute. Both of us were kinda stuck and not sure where we we're going next. I still don't know if I'm rolling with this Shepard guy yet, but Nezala says he's good people. At least someone's vouching for him. Nezala's been thinking of resigning. Apparently this wasn't the first time she's been pissed with her superiors. From what she tells me, they sound a lot like some of the assholes I worked with in the CEC. No actual experience, grandfathered in by someone who had connections, and generally shit. Problem was that she didn't know where else to go. She really didn't have anyone outside the fleet. >Deadline's a few hours away. I'm tired as hell. I'm surrounded by a bunch of beat up crap that's taken forever to fix. It's a wonder I can even record anything I'm so out of breath. Stasis modules, gravity tether tech, RIGs, Shockdrives. Pile that on top of all the odd looks and constant questions I've been getting from everybody. Council reps came earlier today and started grilling me. Had some scientists with them who apparently studied Jettan top to bottom to find any anomaly. Listened to their useless report telling me they still don't know how I got here. based on electromagnetic readings, they suspect some sort or singularity event. Whatever. I've stopped caring. I just want to go home, or even have a home to go to, dammit. I think I've made up my mind. Shepard might be the best route as long as I don't have to fight. If i can help people without everyone crawling all over me, then hell yeah, let's do it. Kinda sick of stewing here wondering what my next step will be. He showed up today. Came with the quarian chick and some new freak-show. Couldn't see his face behind his helmet, but boy was he a smartass. Maybe I'm just being too touchy. Guy didn't mean any hostility, I'm sure. I just can't wait until this is all over.

>Council members spoke to me a little more over hologram. Kinda drowned out everything they said. Just more "pleased to meet you" and other shirt and tie drivel. Getting pretty sick of it. They just look and sound like every thick-skulled politician I've ever heard. Only guy that seemed worth a damn was that Anderson guy. he was a lot less fake than the others were. Tempted to say that's because he's human, bu to be fair, I haven't had much contact with aliens outside of the quarians here on the fleet. Apparently he's in good with Shepard. That's good news. If this is who I'm rolling with, looks like I made the right decision. I hope.

On the topic of "Asari getting their brains fried by the remains of the Maker signal in Isaac's head", how's this for a premise: Morinth comes across a lonely Isaac at a bar on Omega, attempting to drink himself into oblivion.

One thing follows another, and they end up back at her place. They embrace eternity, and Morinth gains a view into the remains of the dead god that tried to force its way into Isaac's head.

And she falls in love with it.

Cue blackout. When she comes to, Isaac is long gone, but now Morinth is obsessed with finding him and getting another look inside his head. No matter what she might unleash.
>>
So, anybody ever stat Isaac for Unknown Armies? I think its one of the few insanity systems that can accurately and simply describe his level of mindfuck. Some kind of adept he might be, but his steel determination and seemingly infinite willpower could be a result from channeling the Warrior. He's probably a soon-Godwalker. He still has immense mental scarring, but by Dead Space 3 he's an avatar and can simply ignore any and all necromorph related stress checks. Too bad he's already bonkers.

Eh, maybe. Don't really have the amount of free time I used to, and I don't feel as though I have a good enough grasp of Morinth's character.

I've only recently come into my powers of insight, and it's been a long time since I played Mass Effect.

Isaac looked out of the porthole in his quarters. Among the familiar ships in the flotilla were several notable newcomers. In addition to the Normandy, he could see other ships docking with the main live ships of the flotilla. he didn't recognize nay of the insignia, but it wasn't hard to deduce why they had come. No doubt there were reporters, scientists, special interest groups ready to see Isaac's demo. He squinted at them with an exhausted contempt. He didn't know what Shepard was planning to do with him, and he couldn't expect the shrewd commando to pander to him forever. Still though, there had to be some sort fo break he could afford him, even if only for a but a fleeting moment.

Isaac got a call on his omni-tool. Nezala's familiar, somewhat tired voice called out over what sounded like a huge din in the plaza. "hey Princess, show's almost on. You about ready? Everything's set to go in about an hour."

"I'll be ready. Sounds like everyone in the fleet's ready too..."

"Them and just about everyone in Council space. We've never had this many outsiders on board. Security's got their hands full." Nezala said, as the din behind her continued to roar on. "How have you been holding up?"

"Eh, I dunno." Isaac said, cracking his neck and knuckles. "I mean, I'm tired of all the nonsense that's been going on for a month, but to be honest, I do like this kind of stuff sometimes. Fixing all this crap up was a pain in the ass, don't get me wrong, but tech normally doesn't backtalk you or get in your face much."

"You're still throwing a tantrum over that, huh?' Nezala asked with some friendly sass.

"Oh no, you're good." replied Isaac as he stepped out of his quarters and walked to the main atrium, accompanied by an armed guard. "It's just kind of a way for me to cope with everyone's BS, I guess."

Apologizing in advance for the wall of dialogue I had to rush this a little. I'll probably rewrite it at some point.

“I’m going to be brief,” Director Samuel Hayes said a short while after Isaac’s unexpected arrival. An awkward introduction had followed, accompanied with Isaac’s panicked warnings about the Brother Moons and all that came with them. “We are in the middle of a crisis. Under normal circumstances you would be held and evaluated until I knew exactly how you managed to arrive here, but as it stands I’m forced to ask for your help containing this situation.”
“There’s no time for that! Earth is under attack!” Isaac yelled back. “I’m surprised the Moons aren’t here right no-“
Hayes cut Isaac off sharply. “Mister Clarke, focus please. Earth is not under attack. There are no rogue stellar bodies orbiting this or any other planet in the Solar System. And I have never heard of an Earthgov, church of Unitology, or anything that fits your description of these Markers of yours. However if we do not deal with the current situation at hand things will be a great deal worse for everyone.”
“But where did they go?!” Isaac cried. “They were there! I saw them! Hell, I crashed into one! Weren’t you listening to me?”
“I was, and to answer your first question I suspect ‘they’ didn’t go anywhere, you did,” Hayes replied with forced patience. Vega, have you made any headway on locating the origin of Mister Clarke's signal?"

“Yes Director,” the nearby console replied, making Isaac jump. He knew it was just a computer responding but saying he was ill at ease was a monumental understatement. “I am still compiling data but every indicator I have points to an origination point beyond our current space time boundary.”

“In short, you’re not in Kansas anymore Mister Clarke,” Hayes continued. “Back to the matter at hand; if you are as accomplished an engineer as you claim your presence here is a godsend. My silent companion here, while very adept at combating the invaders, lacks the technical knowledge that would make possible at least one course of action that will mitigate the damage done to the equipment in this facility. Equipment that I must stress is vital to the survival of the human race.”

“Let me make sure I understand what you’re telling me Director,” Isaac replied hotly. “I’ve been ripped from my…what…dimension? I’ve landed here in the middle of an invasion by literal demons from literal fucking Hell, and if I don’t help clean this up we’re all dead?”

“That’s a gross simplification of the situation, but accurate enough for now,” Hayes replied with a trace of humor in his voice. “I can’t force you to help contain this, Mister Clarke, and for the record I’m reasonably sure my companion in the next room will be able to handle anything he runs into. I’m asking you, for the good of mankind, to help me contain this with a minimum of damage to this facility. If you don’t want to get involved, fine, I understand. But if you turn me down that will be it. You will receive no support from myself and will be all alone in the face of what is to come.”

"But I don’t know how anything here works!” Isaac protested, stalling for time to come to terms with what he was hearing. “I don’t-“

“Vega and I can walk you through anything you require assistance with,” Hayes overrode Isaac yet again, voice turning hard. “We are pressed for time. I need an answer, and I need it now. Are you going to help us and yourself, or are you on your own?”

Isaac frantically looked around the room, feeling trapped and lost. He was in over his head, he knew that. He wasn’t just up shit creek without a paddle, he was didn’t even have a boat and the creek was about to turn into a water fall.

“Alright, fine! You win!” Isaac snapped. “I’ll help sort out and ‘contain’ you’re damned problems! Just tell me what I need to do to get out of this shithole alive!”

“Excellent. Welcome to the team,” Hayes said, his voice back to the calm and composed tones Isaac had first heard when he arrived. “Let’s get you introduced to your partner in this endeavor and get the two of you on your way.”

The way i initially thought of it was something like a zerg infestation. It just kinda starts showing up on your body. If you get a cut it would obviously start spreading rapidly from that point. Basically any damage to your body leads to a new vector in the necromorph infection on your body. The best you can do is not get hit and simply hope you can destroy the marker before enough of your tissue is taken over and you end up dying to organ failure or something becoming a full necromorph.

Where on the normandy do you think Isaac would hole up? He probably wouldn't last long in the barracks with the other crew (or they wouldn't last long with him). Or would he just hole up innatubes?

The Normandy (the SR2 less so) doesn't have a ton of space, but it does have more internal volume than you get to see in the game. The emergency crawlspace under the bridge for instance.

Isaac hesitated as Hayes turned away towards the only door out of the room. The physical effects of the teleportation were beginning to wear off, leaving in their wake a mounting sense of just how much and, paradoxically, how little had changed in his situation.

On the one hand, there were no Brother Moons attacking Earth, no Necromorphs, and no fanatical religious sect set on prying anything from his mind at present. However he was right back where he always seemed to be, knee deep in an unbelievable situation with no escape in sight except to wade in deeper and hope he didn’t go under in the process. Taking one last desperate look around to try and find another way, any other way that would get him out of this situation that wouldn’t see him dead or stranded with no help in sigh, Isaac grudgingly followed along behind the robotic Director.

By the time he’d caught up with him, Hayes had already passed through the door and entered the next room which Isaac saw was some sort of air lock and prep room. Sturdy lockers lined both walls with a metal work bench running up the middle of the room and a set of benches flanking the heavy hatchway behind him. Standing at the work bench roughly half way between the entrance and exit to the chamber was the figure in green armor Isaac had spotted when he first arrived here, wherever ‘here’ was in the greater sense of the word.

“This is Isaac Clarke,” the director said addressing the second person in the room. “He will be accompanying you on your mission and handling the more technical aspects that you two may face. And this,” Hays said turning back to Isaac, “Is someone that I have every faith will be able to see you safely to the Argent Tower. Don’t ask me what his name is, if he has one he hasn’t spoken it to me. I’ve taken to calling him Praetorian. The denizens of Hell call him the Doom Slayer. Beyond that everything about him is a mystery.”

>>50653473
Isaac slowly stepped forward to get a better look at Praetorian, he supposed. The thought of calling someone Doom Slayer in any serious manner was, for the moment, too absurd for him to seriously consider. He was larger than he’d first thought; a full head taller than Isaac himself, though still dwarfed by the Director. His dark green armor was unlike anything Isaac had seen, like something out of an intranet show or something. The only thing Isaac could see that gave any indication that Praetorian was actually a ‘he’ and not another robot was the vague, distorted outline of a facial features behind the faceplate and the faintly reflected lights of a heads up display.

After they’d entered the room Praetorian had turned to regard Isaac, head tilted slightly to one side, a large partly disassembled belt fed rifle temporarily forgotten on the bench in front of him. What Praetorian thought of him, if anything, Isaac couldn’t tell. He didn’t say anything or give any sign of approval or disapproval at the news that Isaac would be accompanying him. He just looked Isaac up and down, seemed to take note of the ad hoc nature of the weapons on Isaac’s hips, stared at him for a long moment, then turned his attention back to the reassembly of his mammoth rifle.

“Don’t take it personally,” Hayes confided in Isaac. “In all the time I’ve known him he has yet to say a word to me either.”

“And how long has that been, exactly?” Isaac asked.

“About four hours and sixteen minutes.”

“Wonderful,” Isaac said in place of cursing. “Let me guess, you don’t know what we’ll l be up against out there either?”

“That I do know. To be brief, an advanced force comprised mostly of the lesser denizens of Hell and the possessed remains of the Mars facility staff. If you move quickly enough and we’re all very fortunate you will also encounter Olivia Pierce before she reaches the top of the Tower. I’ll fill in the details as you get closer but we’ve wasted too much time as it is. Vega just spotted Doctor Pierce boarding the maglev tram and is headed there now.”

There was that feeling of being in over his head again; too much information too quickly in a new situation. The last time Isaac had felt anything like this was right after first stepping foot on the Ishimura. Isaac leaned against the work bench’s surface to steady himself and suppressed the urge to rub his eyes.

“On the wall outside the door is a personal computer. Take it. I’ll have Vega log it as yours and give you access to the base network as well as security clearance. While the two of you move to stop Doctor Pierce I’ll return to my office and do what I can to delay her and assist you on your way. Godspeed, both of you.”

The far door slid open, Praetorian finished reassembling his rifle, Isaac reluctantly reactivated his helmet, and the three of them moved out into the facility proper.

The doors snapped shut behind Hayes, the last to step out of the airlock. Isaac compulsively glanced around the large bay he found himself in, performing his usual check for vents or anywhere else a necromorph was likely to jump out of. He was glad to see Praetorian sweeping the room as well with rifle at the ready. There's nothing quite like having your paranoia and unease justified.

The room was some sort of guard or duty station, larger than the apartment he and Ellie had shared back on Luna, most of the far wall taken up by a security kiosk and the other two walls taken up by heavy metal hatchways. Without a word to Isaac or even a backward glance Hayes turned to the right hatch and stalked off, presumably heading off to his office complex. And there on the wall next to the door they had emerged from was a computer pad, as promised. Plucking it from its bracket on the wall Isaac turned to start toward the hatch labeled Transit, not surprisingly the one opposite from where Hayes was headed, when a blow to the chest staggered back a step.

He reflexively grabbed what had struck him, and found himself gripping Praetorian by the wrist, who was in turn forcing a large bulky pistol onto Isaac. “No way, keep it,” Isaac began. “I've got my....own...” he trailed off. The moment Isaac had gripped the pistol Praetorian turned toward the Transit hatch and jogged off. Juggling the tablet and pistol awkwardly Isaac followed the green armored figure deeper into the complex.

They didn't get far before being hit with the first attack.

They quickly traversed a short hallway, descended a flight of stairs, and had just entered a large console filled room when it happened. There was a far off howl, Praetorian snapped his rifle around to the right, a flash of red light, and they were upon them.

The red light dissipated around two huge bone gray shapes, both of them already charging straight at Isaac and Praetorian, with a small horde of shambling figures moving rapidly up behind them. While Isaac was taking in the situation, Praetorian was already moving. His rifle thundered deafeningly in the enclosed space, drowning out the crashing of his boots as the lunatic charged straight at the oncoming horde. He was playing a stream of high caliber bullets across the whole lot of them, firing indiscriminately at both the charging Things and the mass of pale bodies behind them. The lead thing lunged to one side in a bid to dodge part of the rifle burst and to clear a console blocking its path straight to Praetorian. The second one decided to bypass the impediment entirely and jumped high into the air, easily clearing the obstruction and, as part of the jump, raised its arms over its head with clear intent to pile drive them into the green armored aggressor.

Acting on reflex Isaac pointed his left hand at the airborne Thing and triggered his RIG's stasis module. The Thing's meteoric descent as abruptly slowed to a crawl, and it was hard to say who was more surprised, Praetorian or the other Thing; Praetorian stumbled half a step before reversing direction and vaulting the console to charge straight into the oncoming rush of pale figures. The second Thing snapped its head around to focus on the newcomer, lowered said head, and charged straight at Isaac. It moved in a straight line, barreling straight in towards him.

Perfect.

The familiar grip of his plasma cutter met Isaac's hand, his thumb toggled the modified tool to a horizontal setting, with a detached sense of calm, he took aim at the charging figures left knee. The first shot blackened the ossified tissue of the creatures lower thigh. The second burned though the epidermis to expose charred muscle and tendon. The third and fourth burned the creature to the bone and through said bone respectively. With a bone rattling howl the creature toppled to the side, crashing into and wrecking a guard rail before rolling to a jarring halt. Isaac, however, wasn't done.

Thumbing the pistol back to horizontal he took aim again, this time on the creature's left elbow. A trio of shots crippled the limb, leaving it still attached but dangling useless. Isaac rushed to the left, closing the distance with the immobilized creatures wounded side. It was still recovering as he stepped level with it's hulking shoulders and raised his boot. His RIG sensed this motion and Isaac felt the familiar pressure of his grav boots engaging.

The creature looked up at him and had time to open it's mouth before Isaac dropped the boot square on its bony face, right where the eyes would be if it had any, the combined force of the blow and gravametric shearing drove it's head back down onto and crushed it against the metal deck below.

Do you think Issac would be a romanceable option for FemShep? He's got the same kind of 'badass but broken' thing going on as Thane, but less serene and with a longer shelf life.

And really, who even remembers Thane most of the time?
>>
>>50680135
Thane wasn't really broken, just world-weary. As for Isaac, well, let's say Isaac is a bit too broke/depressed/sane to go for a relationship with shep. I could see it happening Jack, because while she is broken too, Jack eventually fixes herself. Although, to be fair, that is a pretty big if in the Jack department.

Why did they try to use "free energy" from alien obelisks instead of solar or fusion power? It's not like humanity had to compete with any aliens for resources since the whole galaxy was DEAD, with planets in the goldilocks zone having no life, not even bacteria, except some weird alien obelisks found every once in a while. Why was running out of resources too? What did they need the resources for where they had to literally consume entire planets to ship back to earth?
>>
>>50680763

Dead Space humanity is so resource hungry that even wastefully cracking planets just barely keeps them ahead of the curve. Their space empire is growing, and to fuel that growth they need to build new ships and stations, which are very resource intensive. Maintaining existing infrastructure isn't cheap too.

They are keeping just barely ahead of the resource problem, but they are looking down the barrel of a major energy crises, and in space an energy crises means death.

Shockpoint drives are not cheap. They have to throw everything they have just to make more ships so they can have enough mining ships to throw everything they have at getting enough resources to make more mining ships... in a loop. Forever. And if they ever falter in that loop, billions of people die and their civilization falls apart.

The marker powersource was their hope of breaking out of that loop and getting this shit under control.
>>
>>50680878
Not that anon, but nobody knew back then that Markers would create Necros.

And even after they discovered that, they still kept going with it.
>>
>>50681948

To be fair, the necromorph problem as bad as it is just makes the Markers more enticing.

Their effect is horrifying, but the fact that they can do what they do means that if you CAN figure out how the damned thing works you have unlocked whole new branches of science like you haven't even dreamed of.

Markers as found are nightmare machines, but the science that makes the markers work is a goldmine for whoever can puzzle out the secret. Like how uranium is just a worthless, deadly rock until you use it for bombs or powerplants.
>>
>>50682338
Yeah, but sooner or later one will go full MAKE US WHOLE and there is the point where shit is repeatedly hitting the fan.

Unless someone would find a way to isolate Marker radiation from the rest of the world.
>>

Didn't the start of Dead Space 3 feature a Marker that actually was under total control with no necromorph outbreak until Danik blew up the restraints?
>>
>>50682467

Darn. My memory is screwed up.
>>
>>50682489
yeah, Earth Gov had kinda figured it out, but The Unitoligists were becoming much more violent and fanatical
>>
>>50682642

Which isn't an accident. Apparently, something like the unitologists always happens when the markers are introduced to a new civilization. The fact that their beliefs line up so well with the marker's effects isn't a coincidence, the Marker signal spares certain people to act as 'carriers' that spread Marker fanaticism.

The markers are a multi-layered trap. They radiate "free" energy, which makes technologically advanced civilizations curious about them. Those that get exposed to their signal either go murder violent (creating corpses), start building markers, or get fanatical and want the markers/necromorphs to succeed.

Its a system designed to perpetuate itself until everything hits a critical mass and you can trigger convergence.

>>
>>50684879

Nah. Clarke isn't that kind of Deus ex Machina.

Its important to remember that while Isaac is the MC of dead space, he is in a supporting role in Mass effect. Shepard is still the main character. That means that while Isaac can do important things, Shepard is still the one leading the missions and ultimately saving the day.

So no ending fights early. But, if you want, Isaac's response to that scene can be FUCK YOU, AND FUCK YOUR REAPERS!

Earthgov could have learned from the early Red Marker experiment that resulted in the total loss of a planet that even skin flakes/dust in the presence of a Marker is a bad idea.

They need energy for ship production but Markers are effectively enemy alien bio-weapon generators that could go off at any moment? Solution is simple: Select some uninhabited system as the central location for manufacturing and resource processing and use robots for everything, nothing organic allowed in system.

Drone ships would haul the materials to the marker system, factories would churn out goods, shipyards build ships, drone ships would haul the finished products out. But everything would be done remotely.

Research? Do all that in a very distant system, with no more than 1 person per lab/station who's welded in the habitat, virtual presence and teleoperation and STERILIZE EVERYTHING. None of this airducts filling up with strange organic growth that turns out to be undead skincells oh wait they're spawning monsters now.

Even just burying Markers several hundred meters under ground or inside a sphere of concrete with powerlines leading out (not like the things need maintenance anyways) would have prevented most of the disasters from Dead Space 2 and 3, simply because it'd be impossible to get enough Necromorphs next to the things to start up a "cascade event".
>>
>>50694656
Delicious. Will wait.

>>50694734
Yeah, but still there is a risk there that someone will go full MAKE US WHOLE.

Thus everyone who had contact with the Marker or was in presence of it should be lobotomized or shot, then their remains immediately incinerated to avoid Necromorph transformation.

Also everyone who is a Unitologist should be denied contact with the damn thing and lobotomized so that he wouldn't tell where the darn thing is.

>K, re writan

Isaac's tired eyes slowly opened, greeted by hazy light emanating from the porthole above his head. as he arose, he looked out to see a myriad of ships swarming all around the already formidable flotilla. He eyed their design, their engine placement, porthole placement, aerodynamics, and overall condition as they went to and fro, seeking clearance to dock or somewhere they could safely Idle, as the Migrant Fleet's docking bays had been almost completely loaded by the time Isaac awoke. There was his audience. All these and billions more would soon have their eyes on him as he presented his motley collection. Today was focused entirely on him - the interdimensional contact who could probably start a new age for each and every one of them.

No pressure.

Suddenly, Isaac got a call on his omni-tool. "WAKE UP, PRINCESS, PARTY'S GETTING STARTED!" called a familiar, sarcastic voice. "Done with your beauty nap."

"Love you too, honey..."

"Oh, quit being so touchy." Nezala replied. "We got about two hours before it drops. Time you got anything else ready that needs to be. crew's all set for you here at your workstation. You ready?'

"Ready as I'll ever be..." said Isaac, his voice straining as he stretched out of nine hours of hard-earned sleep. Given the show didn't start until 0900, he saw an opportunity to sleep in he hadn't had in years. 'tell them I'll be there in a minute."
>>
>>50695217
I'd argue that machines screwing up is an acceptable risk considering how stupidly dangerous Markers are.

That said, EarthGov didn't do itself (or humanity) any favors by putting the "tamed" Markers it had in the middle of population centers. Nuclear reactors wouldn't go in downtown so neither should a Marker that's a thousand times more dangerous, even basic safety that nuclear reactors get like fenced exclusion zones and blast proof containment vessels would have helped.

On the other hand it's a horror story and the people in charge can't be too competent for the story to progress. EarthGov also seemed really anemic in Dead Space 3 considering their entire military and navy was wiped out by Unitologists in less than 15 minutes. Plus the one EarthGov ship that did survive the purge/civil war got destroyed instantly by 500 year old space mines while the Unitologist dropships managed to bypass the mines and land safely on alien marker world.

So maybe human civilization was a lost cause in Dead Space, where the 5th columnist Unitologists were ruining the economy and military of EarthGov preparing for the "convergence event" that Markers are supposed to start.
>>
>>50696148
Because Unitologists had a shitloads of people that injected money into the organization, had the right people in the right places at the right time and viola.

These guys are OP.

Isaac stepped into his workplace, a cordoned off section of the Rayya's armory, accompanied by two guards who kept guard at the door upon Isaac's entry. Nezala was there to greet him. "Dude, You were dead as a rock! That was like the third time I called!" she said, stifling a light chuckle.

"Oh, I wish." Isaac replied facetiously. "Ok, we've got an hour and a half until we have to be in that plaza. We need to make sure everything is properly stowed away for transport. Vaalen, you and your team will take charge of that. Think you can handle it?"

"You got it." replied another quaria, signalling his team to start to work on Isaac's hardware.

"Alright. Nezala, how's security holding up?"

Nezala called her subordinates over her omni-tool. Each one of them confirmed the same news: almost all passageways were crowded, surprisingly with more outsiders than quarians. place was in an uproar, but a manageable uproar. Some minor altercations between outsiders and quarians, but nothing too major. Upon hearing each of their reports, Isaac could only be glad that they were taking military-only passageways. "We'll survive, at least for a few more days." said Nezala.

"Alright, then let's get ready to roll. Shepard gonna be in attendance?"

"Tali contacted us late last night." replied a marine over by Isaac's workbench. "They docked just last night."

"Thanks, Kal. I'll him my decision's final." Isaac said as he opened his omni-tool's messaging function, referencing his reply to the commander the previous day. His initial acceptance of Shepard's offer was shaky and somewhat unsure, but this time around, he was sure of himself. A night of meditating on the decision tipped him in favor of the enigmatic commander. By the time morning came, the decision was much easier to make. As he typed, he re-assured his availability right after the first session, offering an interview aboard the Normandy.

Nezala signaled Isaac to come closer. Isaac understood the cue for more private conversation and complied. 'Think you're ready for this, Isaac?"

"Ah, I'll be fine. huge crowds notwithstanding." Isaac replied. "i mean, I'll be honest, this kind of stuff is well within my ballpark. I just have to imagine I'm training another greenie on using the mining tools before he loses an arm and tries blaming me for it before being sent to bio-prosthetics. I mean, granted it's a lot more people, but really, all this stuff's pretty easy for me."

"Well yeah, I figured after you spent ten hours straight crafting stuff a few days back. You just look a little nervous, I mean, you've been shuffling as you talk. You just seem kinda fidgety."

"Do I now..." Isaac replied, unaware of his body language. "It's showing that bad?"

"Not especially, but I couldn't help but notice. What's wrong?"

"Nothing's really wrong. I guess. I mean, so much of my life has been messed up and turned upside down. I don't know what to really make of this..."

"I think I know what you can make out of it."

"What?"

Nezala strode forward and gave Isaac a hard, affirmative slap on the shoulder, holding it and saying "I think you've got a chance to start over."

"Yeah... maybe I do..."

Isaac stood a good distance behind the plaza stage, pulpits removed and floor extended to accommodate his displays. He was well hidden behind guards and staff attendant to him and his metallic menagerie, but not for much longer. Admiral Shala'Raan's welcoming address was coming to a close, and Isaac knew he would be taking center stage soon. What would he say? He hadn't prepared any fanciful speech or flowery oration. All he knew to say regarded to the weapons and modules and other gadgets that for the moment, drew most of the photographic attention. Isaac heard the admiral utter his name, and the cold sweat on his brow was no dryer for it. He heard her give a brief introduction before she invited him to the main stand, set up just a little ahead of the main stage.

"It will now be my pleasure to introduce Mr Clarke himself. Mr Clarke, would you come up to the stand, please?"

"Here we go" Isaac muttered to himself as he took the pulpit. There was no applause so much as there was an uneasy quietness. the plaza was full to brimming, and screens showing the faces of audiences everywhere around the galaxy adorned the walls. Reporters and freelancers all focused their attention on him. A sickening eeriness bore over the entire plaza, as everyone began to speak in hushed tones, the journalists' voice being the only ones really standing out. The situation made Isaac sick. Public speaking was not his forte, but he had to say something.

"Hello everyone." he said. "My name is Isaac Clarke. As Admiral Raan told you, I'm not really from here. Scientists from around the galaxy are working on that puzzle as we speak. Right now though, I can shed some light on some questions i'm sure you all have. I've been informed the star date here is 2185. I was born on June 5th, 2465. The technology I am about to show to you will demonstrate this well enough, but I'm getting ahead of myself. You've probably heard rumors of what my life has been like. I assure you, if I were to tell you the whole thing, I'd lose half of you. All you need to know and all I need to say for now is that I am not much different from most of you. before I came here I had a job that i went to every day to make myself a living, I had a life. It wasn't very glamorous, but that's the way it goes for most of us." Isaac almost cracked a chuckle. What life has he had in five years? What normalcy has he enjoyed? Continuing, he said "In any case, I'm not here to go on about my personal story. I'm here to show you some of the things we use were I'm from. So, without further ado, let's get started."

Isaac, synchronized his omni-tool with the intercom system and began his presentation. "Now, let's start with what I think is the most important thing here. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is called a shockdrive." he said as he walked over and pointed to a strange blue cylindrical device about half his size. "I'm afraid we are unable to use it at the moment, as it's not currently compatible with your technology, but I'll give a brief overview of what it does. Now, I've been told you guys can't go very far unless you use something called a 'mass relay', is that correct?"

the crowd gave a mixed response. Some answered Isaac's question in the affirmative. Most others were starting to realize what Isaac was implying. The continual conversation got noticeably louder as time passed, stopping short as Isaac raised a single hand. He continued to address them. "From what I'm told, those relays work by opening a condensed channel of space for the craft the travel through using some sort of element called 'eezo' to induce the proper mass/grvitational fluctuations. I personally haven't gotten a chance to tinker around with it, but it sounds interesting. Well, long story short, this Shockpoint Drive right here can do the same thing all on its own. No eezo, no relying on outside equipment, nothing.

Almost immediately, the crowd started to forget that all questions were to saved for the end of the session. Some tried to bumrush the stage. Others tried calling Isaac a liar. most however, simply shouted frenzied questions at Isaac. this was exactly what he was afraid of. various journalists and reporters tried getting up front to get a question in, and many others behind them recorded the ordeal via omni-tool, offering hyped, frenzied commentary to share with their loved ones back home. Luckily for Isaac, there was a way to control the din now roaring in the plaza. he turned up the volume on his mic to almost deafening, and without warning raised his voice to almost shouting "ALL QUESTIONS ARE TO BE SAVED FOR AFTER THE PRESENTATION." People covered their ears, cringing as Isaac's voice thundered throughout the whole ship. The influx of inquiry ceased almost immediately. "Thank you." Isaac said curtly. "Now, if I may continue, I might as well drop some info that might answer some of your questions right off the bat. A Shockpoint drive is dependent on what coordinates are available within its log." The engineer then opened up the shockpoint computer. it notified him of installment readiness and warned him of various other sundry functions and malfunctions before he opened the coordinate list. "This shockpoint drive, if installed, would be able to take us to... let's see here... it has some coordinates set for several points in Andromeda space, three in Crab, esveral others in other galaxies..." The audience began to murmur loudly again. Some once again accused Isaac of lying. Others were simply astonished and sounded their amazement to others around them. yet more continued to record and provide commentary. The conversation was again cut short by Isaac, who sensed another upheaval. "now, from what I hear, there are no relays outside of this galaxy. If the right coordinates are set, this machine can take a vessel literally anywhere."

Meanwhile Shepard and his squad were watching from a balcony in the plaza, on the partition to Isaac's left. as the crowd around them continued to converse and whisper among themselves, Shepard got a call from the Illusive man. "Hello Shepard. I assume you've been paying attention to Isaac's claims."

"I have been." Shepard replied with well concealed venom in his voice. he had come to know exactly what to expect from the Illusive man's missives. "Seems pretty interesting..."

"'Interesting' is one way to put it." the Illusive man replied. "i'd call it a new priority #1. I assume you and your team will be more than able to bring Mr Clarke on board?"

'relax, he already said yes just last night. We'll be talking with him on the Normandy just after the Q&A."

"Now that's interesting. You haven't informed me of that development, Shepard."

"I was going to once we actually got a chance to talk to him again." Shepard said with some mild aggravation. he was already tired of the Illusive Man's interruption and micromanaging. he had already learned to distrust him. now his ambition was even more thinly veiled than usual, and it was quickly getting on Shepard's nerves. 'the session will be done in about two more hours. we'll contact you in four."

"Good to hear." replied the illusive man before hanging up.

"Lemme guess, is that our Cerberus buttbuddy?" jack quipped, leaning against the guardrail.

"Yeah, just more crap about harassing Clarke." Shepard muttered. "I'm really starting to get annoyed with all his errand boy rhetoric. I swear if he tries any stupid shit with this guy once we have him on board..."

"Keelah Shepard, I don't remember you having a potty mouth..." Tali said coyly.

"hey, if you're up to kicking some Cerberus ass, I'm all for it." said Jack.

"Let's not get too ahead of ourselves." Shepard replied. "we need them for now, but we're still gonna need a little severance plan to keep on the down-low. I think Isaac can help us with that."

"How so?" asked Jack.

"He's got a couple tricks up his sleeve the galaxy's never seen before. We've already got first dibs on him. If we can prove we have his interests in mind we can be sure that the only ones who get their hands on him are those who need to. Council-subsidized shipbuilders, Alliance and Council Space military, Migrant Fleet, etc. Just not Cerberus. We'll have to play real slick with that, But we've got enough at our disposal to make sure we slip this one by. The crucial junction is getting in contact with teh rigth people at the right time when we want to cut off."

"Why them?" Tali asked. "don't get me wrong, I'm not opposed to the Flotilla getting jacked up with Shockdrives, but it sounds like a lot to pull off under the radar before the Illusive man finds out we're dealing under their table. That and the fact that those bosh'tets in the council probably won't be able to keep their mouths shut. That is, if they don't take a million years to decide whether or not the Galaxy is ready to see some actual progress."

"They're watching this just like we are, Tali. They'll be on our Doorstep soon enough. While I'll do what I can to make sure Isaac enjoys some privacy, that doesn't always deter leakers and other journalists if you catch my drift."

"I don't know how much he'll trust you if he knows that's what you're up to..." Jack replied

"Not if I counsel with him on it." said Shepard. "He already knows we plan to share the tech and meet with some high-ups to do it. All I really need to do is have some one-on one talk with him about what we plan to do. He kinda strike me as the kind of guy who wouldn't really trust the Illusive man either. From what we already know about his backstory, he's had a hard time with big, secretive, clandestine organizations."

"What makes you think he'll view the Council as any different?" asked Tali.

"they're big and clandestine, but not as secretive. Just incompetent."

"This guy's hiding something..." jack said quietly as she watched Isaac continue his presentation.

"What?"

"I know that tone of voice. He's hiding something." Jack said, now paying keen attention to the engineer as he explained the workings or a shockpoint drive blueprint to his audience.

"What, do you think he's hiding something about the tech?" Tali asked.

"No." jack responded. "It's hard to pick up unless you've been in the pen for a while. You hear it when someone's trying to slip on over you, or when someone's trying to lie about what they did so they don't get jumped in the showers. Shepard, whatever you know about his story, I guarantee you don't know everything."

"I was sure of that from the beginning, Jack." said Shepard. "but he's been bothered to death about it. If we're gonna be asking questions, i suggest it'll have to wait."

"I'm telling you Shepard, he's hiding something." jack replied with concentrated scrutiny resounding in her voice, her brow furrowing as she continued to watch Isaac from the balcony. "Something huge."

"Hate to be off-topic, but I think I'd like some time to talk to him too..." Tali added. "Maybe a little personal tutorial on how to work this stuff. He's only going over the basics right now and I can understand all of it, but it's not enough to, I dunno, maybe make on of my own and/or install one on the Normandy?"

"Quit hyperventilating, Tali." Shepard quipped. "You'll get a chance once he's settled in. Give him at least a week before asking for a tutorial."

'Sure that's what she's excited about?" Jack said, smiling. "Guy's got an ass that won't quit, just look at that thing..."

"Hey what's wrong with being a nerd?!"

"AHEM" Shepard interjected. The two immediately desisted and returned their attention back to Isaac's presentation.

Isaac pivoted on the spot, grinding the foul remains of the creatures head further into the metal deck and sighted on the second demon that he had tagged with stasis just in time for it to the blue aura to abruptly dissipate and the creature to crash to the deck fists first. It stumbled as time reasserted it's self on it and everything seemed to jump around the room. Recovering it sighted on Isaac, bellowed, then did something that caught Isaac completely off guard. It lunged forward and again slammed it's fists into the ground, only this time it had a trick up it's nonexistent sleeves.

Red and orange light trailed off it's fists and forearms, light which exploded in a thunderclap as it impacted the deck and generated a shock wave that knocked Isaac backwards and sent him sliding across the deck. Isaac was momentarily stunned and blinded by the combined force of the strange blast and the abrupt stop he made when the back of his head struck the wall that had been behind him. Frantically blinking the dancing spots out of his eyes he groped blindly for the plasma cutter that had been knocked from his grip and spinning away. His vision slowly cleared showing the creature striding across the room straight at him. Isaac tried to get to his feet and move away but only succeeded in flopping onto his side.
>>
>>50711832
The creature hooked a foot under Isaac's shoulder and flipped him over onto his back . It leered down at him and raised it's foot over Isaac's head, clearly intending to do unto Isaac as Isaac had done unto its former companion. In desperation Isaac groped for another item strapped to his waist, raised it and pulled the trigger. Isaac panicked as nothing happened for a half second, the creatures foot began it's meteoric descent, then a second thunderclap filled the room and the creature disappeared from Isaac's vision.

He struggled to his feet using the wall behind him and belatedly realized he had in his panic grabbed his contact beam. His hopes that the thing was dead from the shot was dashed when he saw it flailing around not far away. The his had not been clean; instead of striking the creature center of mass as he had intended it had glanced it's hip. The results were no less devastating for the hit though. One leg had been nearly sheared off by the impact, with the other flopping uselessly, the bones in its pelvic region and lower back pulverized into powder by the impact. He raised his arm again, charged a second shot, and sent the thoroughly dead, pulverized creature sailing across the room. Isaac ran over to his plasma cutter, scooped it up from the deck, and turned to survey the rest of the room to find Praetorian standing over the broken remains of the pale figures looking as surprised as an anonymous pile of armor can.

Isaac sat in the briefing room, waiting patiently for his interview with Shepard. It had been only half an hour after the first session ended and he had several precious hours to enjoy before the charade started again. Luckily, it wasn't long before Shepard entered the room. "Good to have you here Isaac." Shepard said with a hand proffered. Isaac stood and took it, returning his salutation.

"Good to be here." Isaac replied. They both came to the holo-display in the middle of the room. there, a hologram of the galaxy appeared, with several points circled and highlighted.

"Alright, let's get to the point. "Shepard said. "I told you a little about our mission already; about how the collectors have been carrying out mass abductions outside of council space in the Terminus systems."

"That you did." said Isaac, remembering the previous night's concordance. "How are we gonna stop them? What progress have we made?"

"Professor Solus over in the tech lab has been invaluable. he's given us provision to deter what are called "Seeker swarms"- devices used by the collectors to put captives in stasis, letting us engage collectors without interference." Footage played from the Horizon mission alongside the galaxy map. Isaac watched intently as Shepard continued. "Our next step is to find a way to get into the Omega 4 relay. only the collectors can use it. No one who has ever used it has ever come back. We suspect that wherever it leads to is where we will find their base of operations. We need to get in there and stop them." A point on the map was outlined and magnified, showing Isaac a red, ominous gyroscopic structure.

"No one but the collectors, huh?" Isaac replied with a hand to the chin of his helmet. 'Well, it all depends on how fast we retrofit this thing with a shockdrive. if we have the right coordinates, we could shock out right to it."

"We've been thinking of that.' Shepard replied. "Right now things are kind of up in the air. We suspect the Collectors use some sort of Identify Friend-Foe protocol to navigate the relay safely. Right now, we don't know how we'll find one. As for the shockdrive option, we've got a lot of technical ifs that the engineering team has to work with once the tech is in their hands."

"Hey, I can help them with that. Give us two weeks to look at the specs together. I'll get to know the Normandy and eezo tech more intimately. that way I'll know what hurdles to avoid when harmonizing it with tech that does teh same thing without the same key component."

"Sounds good, but I think you'll need longer than two weeks." Shepard said. "Besides, our folks over on the Cerberus end are working on finding a way we can get out mitts on an IFF. Still though, I certainly don't object to you working on that, especially given you said you don't want to be in combat. By the way, has stance changed at all?"

Isaac let out a stifled chuckle. "Yeah, no, that's still the same."

"Alright then.' Shepard said, concealing some disappointment and suspicion. he couldn't help but notice Isaac sill had that odd pistol still strapped to his waist. "Not a soldier, huh?" Shepard though. Then what's with the armor? What's with the gun? Maybe jack really was onto something.

"But hey" Isaac continued. "I'm more than willing to start to work on the retrofitting project, if that's what you want me to do unless there's something else. What's our next step?"

"That'll wait until the whole of these presentations, but yeah, you can go ahead and start on that once we're out of here. before you leave, though, I think you should spend some time acclimating yourself to the Normandy. get to know the crew, the ship, all that good stuff. I'd suggest meeting up with Mordin and the engineering team first to get caught up on the mission and the Normandy. Got any questions for me?"

Isaac paused for a moment. He certainly had questions, but he wasn't sure as to what he should and shouldn't ask. Knowing that prying into the life of someone as enigmatic (or at least as seemingly enigmatic) as Shepard would be a dangerous game, Isaac took a safer approach, hoping to be able to gauge Shepard's character more indirectly than directly from the response. "What should I know?"

Shepard was intrigued at Isaac's response. 'Well for one thing, I've technically been on this goose chase for a few years now. A little more than two years ago, me and my team were part of the Alliance Military."

"Who are the Alliance?"

'conglomeration of Earth governments formed a while back. Anyways, i was with them when we came across something big. The relays were not built by us. Most suspected an ancient race known as the protheans did it. Turns out they didn't. The reapers did."

"And who are the reapers?"

"They're what wiped out the protheans. They're massive, sentient, robotic beings with unprecedented destructive power." knowing his word would sound incredulous to Isaac, he had some footage of Sovereign's attack on the citadel play in the holo-display. Isaac watched, somewhat impressed and equally disturbed at the raw display of power he was witnessing, even if only secondhand. "this is a recording of one attacking a place called the Citadel. We'll probably be heading there soon after you're officially part of the team."

"...how come only you are in on this..."

"No one believes us. they believe that sovereign was a geth warship. Long story behind them too. Advanced AI the Quarians made them few centuries back and went rogue. Only person in teh council who vouches our viewpoint is Anderson. I was told you got to speak with him a little?"

"I did. only actual person in that whole council. So anyways, where do these 'collectors' come in?"

"They come in about a year after me and my crew first get tangled into this. we destroyed that reaper and tried to lobby our point to the council but they never took us seriously. We're on patrol one day, and we find ourselves under attack. It was the collectors. They destroyed the original Normandy, and i was lost in the process, crazy as that sounds."

"Wait, what?"

"Isaac, the only reason I'm wearing Cerberus colors is because they revived me. They've apparently gotten in on this too. Basically they're a 'human supremacist' group. They found me and brought em back over the course of two years. You can ask our XO about that project."

"Alright."

"Anyways, I've been working with Cerberus and we've found that these collectors are working for the reapers. They've kidnapped entire colonies and we still don't know why."

"Alright then.. I think I've got a good picture of what's going on.

"Good then." Shepard said, walking to the other side of the room ready to exit. "Anything else you feel like sharing with me?" Isaac was trying to hide his wariness of the fact that Shepard had said so much about the situation and yet so little about himself.

Shepard paused for a moment, detecting Isaac's suspicion. "I'll tell you this much." he replied, walking back to the console. "Just keep this between you and me but..." Shepard paused again and addressed a new character. "EDI..."

"Yes, Shepard?" replied a voice now coming from some sort of odd, round hologram at the corner of the room.

"Keep this one hush hush."

"The Illusive man has ordered periodical surveillance. However, I can delay the next period for another hour, which starts in five minutes. Cerberus has uploaded an update packet into my hardware. That will give me plenty of time and reason to delay the surveillance approval dialogue"

"Sounds good."

"Logging you out, Shepard."

"That an AI?" Isaac asked. "Never seen one that knew how to play dirty."

"EDI's got some tricks up her sleeve, even though she's Cerberus hardware. Anyways Isaac, these guys, Cerberus... I don't like working with them. They're shifty, they've got a shady dossier, and their head has kinda been using me like a puppet. "How will we do that?"

"That's where you come in. We plan on heading over to the Council in a few days. We've already reserved an appointment. We'll have them subsidize companies to reproduce your tech. Really though, that's kind of our front. We'll use that time to correlate with them and the Alliance on joining them. they've already told us to sever from Cerberus several times. In the meantime, we can tell the Illusive Man (he's the head of Cerberus and that's the only alias he has) we were getting your tech in production with the council. To pass that off you will need to be in correlation with them as much as me, Sharing insights and giving them whatever information they need to produce and/or retrofit." Isaac suddenly saw all Shepard's chips on the table. So this was his play. He could hear Shepard's voice get more intense as he spoke. "Isaac, you have to understand, you're the key factor in a lot of this. I'm sorry to put you through it, but you have to know there's a lot of shady crap going on and you're the only one who can help me clear it out."

Isaac slowly and silently resigned to fate. Deep down, he knew trouble would always find him at this point he had no choice but to accept it. "i see... okay I'll do what I can, this might get sloppy, but I have a feeling you're used to that kind of thing."

"That I am." Shepard replied. "by the way, is there anything I need to know about you?"

Isaac could see Shepard's tactic. he didn't want thsi to become some sort of war of wills, at least not anymore. After hearing Shepard's endgame a spark of trust had begun to ignite in him. he knew that if Shepard was going to reciprocate that trust, he too would have to open himself up to scrutiny. Still though, he knew it would take a while for him to really explain everything. knowing this, but not wanting to make himself appear suspicious, he replied. 'there's actually a lot you probably should know. Still though, i think that can wait until after the next session. For now, I think i'd like to get acclimated to the Normandy. Would that be okay?"

At first, Shepard thought Isaac was on some sort of defensive. he was worried at exactly how much it would take to pry him out of his shell. however, he could not help but detect something in Isaac's tone. Something compliant, perhaps even co operational. He seemed no longer to be the harsh, hostile hermit holed up in his psyche that he initially seemed to be. 'Alright we can do that." he replied. "Be seeing you then."

"You got it."

I find it amusing how casual everyone is about Isaac carrying his plasma cutter everywhere. I guess no one knows what it can do, except a few quarians and they didn't seem all that impressed. IIRC kinetic barriers don't work on energy weapons and "no one" in the mass effect verse uses lasers smaller than a warship CIWS because of heat issues.

The rest of the armoury will be fun though. The contact beam might as well be the finger of death, and grunt would love the force gun. The SWS rifle would be the most recognizable thing as it works basically the same way as ME guns, it has limited ammo but it doesn't have overheating issues.

>>50711860
RIPPER WHEN?
>>
>>50717687
The plasma cutter might not actually be all that effective. Depending on how much of it's damage is dealt kinetically or thermally it might not even make it past kinetic barriers. If it doesn't have enough of a kinetic component the plasma bolt will just splash off the barriers. I don't think the bolts are energetic enough to pose an immediate issue with thermal transfer through convection or radiation.

Or depending on the velocity threshold of kinetic barriers it might just pass right through. I wouldn't bet on it though.

I haven't played DS in years so the bolts might hit harder than I remember.

I've always imagined that any kinetic energy generated by the shot is a result of rapid vaporization of whatever is hit by the bolt. A limb goes sailing away because the moisture in the affected area boils away in a millisecond and the bone/tissue is turned to powder and carbon on impact.

My source on the above assumptions is I've used a plasma cutter (pic related) on a raw steak and an oxy acetylene cutting torch on a soup bone before. Why? Science.

Ah more than I remember then. I remember it taking at least two. Still not any sort of miracle weapon speaking in terms of damage dealt.

I think ME verse folks would be amazed and ecstatic at the tech that goes into all of it in general. DS seems to generate little waste heat. Or is at least extremely efficient at governing it. That and by how insanely compact their forms of portable energy storage are. Or how utterly ridiculous their ability to generate and transmit energy is.

>>50718335
I have one, and I've thought about it, but I've never actually done it. I don't know why. It's good to know there are people out there that actually have answered questions that needed to be answered.

To kinetic barriers I should add. Eyebrows are going to get raised when Isaac starts lopping off peoples limbs even if it does take a number of shots to break through barriers.

Let alone when he pulls out the javelin gun. I don't think there is a single weapon in the ME universe that can serve as analog. When people see Isaac literally impaling Mercs and Cerberus troopers to the walls, bricks will be shat

The Kishok harpoon gun would be pretry close. It was a dlc sniper rifle in the ME3 multiplayer. The harpoon didn't explode or electrocute people though.

I still can't come up with any ideas on how it does either of those things. Or why. Like what the hell kind of "surveying" are they doing out there.

There would definitely be some "What the fuck Isaac" moments. Moments because people are never going to get used to that shit. Except Grunt and Jack she would probably think that shit was metal as fuck.
>>
>>50719121
I think out of the box its like a concrete nail gun. It will drive the survey stake a couple of inches into rock when the muzzle is pressed against what you want the survey stake in. Isaac dialed the power up passed 11 to 13 or 14 then made the stakes explosive.

It still makes me wonder what the hell the companies who made these tools were thinking when the told produced are able to do this at all, limiters nonwithstanding. I can only imagine an engineer on their design bureau being asked that very question and replying "Because it's cool."

You can't stop the shipping Juke, but I'll try to keep my lewd fantasies in my head. I'll keep shipping them in silence.

With how safety concerned mining corps in DS seem to be somebody probably wondered about "what if somebody, at some point, needed to stake something from across the entire length of a mining bay while still under gravity" and everyone else thought this was a totally legit question that needed addressing. Combined with the requirement that the tool needed a cycle life that would outlast the heat death of the universe.

Well alrighty then

btw, what's the bump limit around here again? I'm being dead serious when I say not only have I been absent form /tg/ but from 4chan as a whole for two years
>>
>>50719765
350 posts/150-200 images, I think. We're 39 from bump limit.
>>
>>50719871
Or, apparently, it's 310, if the fact that my post counter just turned red is any indication. That's a weird number.

How the hell did you even happen across this thread on the same day the topic was brought back up again?

It's time for new thread boyos!

As a former miner I'm both horrified by that thought and at the same time seized by the wish that there was a switch somewhere on a jack leg drill that would turn it from a tool that puts holes in rock to a weapon that launches 6 foot sections of drill rod with enough force to pin a space zombie to a metal wall 100 yards away.

>>50719871
Well damn, guess I should stop being a useless waste of space and get the next bit finished before we need a new thread.

Everything needs that option, not just mining tools. Why can't civilian cars have a fiery self-destruct system built in, everything with overheating batteries needs a "flamethrower" option, etc.
