>>53764638
Could be that if they ever fight chaos forces that have taken a lot of the major parts of a city they go for a capture mission of either the cult leader or a lot of small fries. Then they perform a ritual in order to ward off heretical and xenos forces from attacking the planet again.
>>
>>53765008
Say hello to a logistical nightmare
>>
>>53765666
Likely would be yes as feeding and housing would be the most pressing problems as well as transport having to accommodate their mounts.

>>53765615
You have a point there and it would even be better to say that the mounts eat the orks because eating Tyranids is just bad for you. But at the same time Orks can be just as much of an unending tide. Our regiment is likely always deployed with our Friends/Minders/ Religious school buddies meaning we'd have more to hit the nids or orks with.
>>
>>53765730
At least with orks they have more stealthy units such as Kommandos that they could fight and the sisters can handle the more direct combat.
>>
>>53765879
I think of it like this yes we're a regiment that specializes in guriella warfare but our core units are made out of the toughest of abhumans a big wall of ogryn sized lizard men or Kroxigors wielding big guns. They're the guys who draw our enemies attention while we have our Raptor-Rippers flank them and just go for the enemy leader or plant promethium fuel caches around their main base then have our Ariel units drop their melta bombs on top of those fuel caches.
>>
>>53765879
Plus Lictors too are of a sneaky kind of beast that tyranids make use of as are gene-stealers.
>>
>>53765946
So what role would the sisters have with the regiment? Since they are allies they would have more of a role then just simply being overseers.

>>53766001
I'm not saying that they don't fight tyranids at times. just that they mainly focus on orks and that if we are going with >>53765269 idea that we just replace the tyranids with orks.

>>
>>53766116
Fair points and I agree with you on changing it to Orks however what the sisters provide is real fire power as I can't imagine our regiment having any super heavy vehicle or too much armor or armor breaking stuff. The sisters are there to be the spear once our big main line has cleared the way they go in further with our big guys giving support. At least that's how I imagine it working I'm open to ideas as always.

>>53770124
I don't think they should be too different from regular humans. Same average size, probably.
I like the idea of a better sense of smell. It reminds me of Roach in Apocalypse Now, who uses a grenade launcher to kill a guy just by smell.
But I think any differences should be mostly muted, that they should be guys set back by their mutations, but determined to do their duty regardless.
>>
>>53770737
> determined to do their duty regardless.

Completely agree. So are the men proud or ashamed of their natural gifts. If the later it could give an interesting look to their kit. Lightweight, camo coloured cloaks, or tunics and pants. Maybe some extra padding (and armor) by proxy so they don't seem as unnaturally lean/lithe (at least for the very slender ones).

So if they are from a death world, jungle world, and use exotic mounts what would an elite's war geat look like? Heavy spear, or maybe grenade launchers with firebombs grenades, frags, and kraks. Are the Mounts adept at running in the open or across Jungle, and very crowded terrain like cities, hives, rough terrain?

Or perhaps do the mounted warriors wield modified eviserators stuck on longer shafts, like elite cav halbeards? Good for clearing jungle paths and taking down infantry, light armor and possibly even heavy armor. Plus it cold be courtesy of their friends of the Sisters of Battles since they have tons of eviserators cause of their repentias.
>>
>>53770875
I think most are proud so that they aren't ashamed. Like the whole Tyrion Lannister "wear it like armor and it can never be used to hurt you" thing. Others may try to hide their mutations, but these guys shove it right in your face before anyone else can.
I like the idea of lizardmen in Vietnam-style kit, or at least the netted helmets look. For the same reason I'm leaning towards grenade launchers, and nimble mounts like raptors.
I like the spears, although cavalry sabers would also be cool. Eviscerators are fuck-heavy though, even without putting one on the end of a stick.

>>53771517
something like this, maybe, but a little better suited to riding. Maybe with a more prominent horn.
>>
>>53771043
Nam-Lizard guard sounds fucking exciting.

I think eviscerators could work if they are only for elite cav. They can design a special tack/saddle to accomodate the haft, or make the back end of the Raptor Eviscerator tuck into a ball joint, with a few ropes/straps securing the weapon to the saddle/tack. With a perpendicular handle half way up the haft, the rider can easily manipulate the Eviserator to swing it outwards, sweeping it wide and cutting down anything it comes across. A charge by a raptor/weird thing with an eviscerator is mental.

Plus they can do lightning strikes, emerge from the jungle, cut down troops and run right back into it, the eviscerator cutting away any thick undergrowth.

Granted it'd be a limited to the elite troops.

We should settle on what the mount is exactly.

Let's get a general consensus on it.

I say the mount is adept/agile in rough terrain, excelling in navigating in difficult terrain. Probably similar in size to a horse, maybe a little smaller.
>>53771517
>>53771533
Agree that herbivorous is a good idea, otherwise it would probably be logistical nightmare for an abhuman army to bring along a horde of carnivores, especially when most of those soldiers don't get real meat on a regular basis.

Maybe, it should have slightly longer and more capable arms, so it can navigate better in rough terrain, but mainly is bideal. Perhaps a shorter neck?
>>
How about Solar powered dinosaurs? Flora based life forms so they sustain themselves on water and sunlight instead of needing food and other supplies. Might make sense if they come from the jungle homeworld, or maybe they root into corpses after battles and digest/disolve the enemy.
Though that might be making the mounts too crazy.
>>
>>53771589
I don't know how realistic we're doing this, but photosynthesis is far too inefficient for large animals, or anything that moves like they do.
A cow powered by photosynthesis won't be able to sustain itself. Compare the amount of grass it eats to the amount of grass it blocks from the sun.
>>
>>53771573
Okay I think the reason why we always go with carinvores is due to their natural aggressiveness however if we focus on making these mounts ornery and that the rider and mount have a good bond we could have something.

Also I suggest a club tail for the mounts like an anklyo
>>
>Homo Brevirostres

>The abhuman strain native to the humid deathworld of Qtzelak, known as Homo Brevirostres, was discovered in mid m40. Previously thought to simply be baseline humans afflicted by chemical runoff of manufactorums near their population centers and the toxic and carcinogenic nature of most swamp life, it was revealed that their placement in these areas is actually a socioeconomic reflection of their abhuman status. Known colloquially as Crocmen or Scalies, these Abhumans inhabit the equator of the planet, as well as a crescent of the planet on the western hemisphere, leading from the southern tip of the largest continent to the small arid desert of the planet to the cooler polar swamps. These abhumans display a reasonable range of dimorphism, as is typical of any population, however there constants of the strain. Crocmen tend be larger than base humans, with the males larger than females. Their skin is a thick, bony hide, with pronounced scales and nodules in few areas. Due to their status as abhumans and the discrimination that follows, most turn to lives of crime and violence, which land them in the various "correctional" units of the planet
>>
>>53771675
Yeah I think proper training and taming can make a herbivore mount as proper fighty as we need it to be. Hell, there are plenty of herbivores in nature that are utter cunts. Hippo's are fucking assholes. Maybe the herbivore mounts have a very very strong pack instinct. Thus the cavalry riders usually smear themselves with their mount's sweat or have been around the pack long enough to be considered one of it.

I think a club tail would be kick ass.

Also are these mounts meant for distance or speed? Can they be ridden for a long time going at a fast pace through rough terrain, or are they quick (especially compared to normal humies) in rough terrain, but when pushed to charge they speed the fuck up for a few minutes.

Also are they naturally armored, or do our boys dress em up wit some armor. Maybe furs, or flak plates?
>>
>>53771762
Made for distance I'd say as they'd need to be redeployed several times over as they'd be meant to weaken the enemy however possible.

Natural armor though they often put flak on their underbellies and soft spots

I think a rider mount bond is fine they'll raise the creatures in a pack since birth together forming the unit as a whole pile of eggs needs a bunch of riders to grow close.

Memoirs of Sister Mary of the Sacred Rose: Chapter 4

I cannot say that it was with cheer that I arrived on Pensad, to serve alongside the Bush Fang Correctionals. Often in the years I spent training I would picture myself leading grand charges of the Imperium's finest to the blackest of its foes. Instead, I found myself fighting logistics itself in the choking jungle of a backwater planet, with rust and moisture the major foes. Only the occasional Ork ambush broke the constant monotony.
Perhaps the most grating of trials at the time was dealing with our accompanying regiment. The Bush Fangs are not... pleasant to behold, at best. At worst, they dwell "a step away from xenos," quoth Sister Margaret. The cruel mutation set upon them renders their skin crusted in abhorrent scales, their faces warped and protruding, and their teeth as prominent and pointed as the very Orks we faced. Not a one of us could look upon them without revulsion.
They kept to themselves, to which we were grateful. Their nightly prayer groups were set apart from ours. While there were whispers as to what heresy such abhumans could commit without supervision, our Ecclesiarchy priest assured us that he had examined their practices with a scrutiny born of deep suspicion, with no results. Indeed, he claimed their piety and adherence to scripture rivaled our own, a statement met with no little amount of incredulity.
We treated them wretchedly, it pains me now to say. To them we gave the most grueling and manual labor, as we would a simple-minded subhuman. That was all they were to us. We set them to digging trenches and fortifications, slashing paths through the dense brush, cleaning the equipment and vehicles (but never our own armor or weapons, their touch was surely too soiled), with little time even to tend to their own bizarre mounts. This they did with no complaint or comment, with a resoluteness that to us at the time seemed mindless.
In time I would learn how badly we squandered their talent.

Random idea for a specialized chain lance/spear as an alternate to an eviscerator on a pole. For catching enemy necks/limbs, and grinding them off. Don't need to kill an enemy, just rip something important off and let their forces decide who gets medical treatment.

I assigned to myself a Bush Fang by the name of Xa Coatl', to serve as a batman of sorts. He was a wiry specimen, who quickly earned the nickname of "Coats", as much for the difficulty in pronouncing his name as the heavy jacket he wore in all weather.
He served me dutifully, though not with the knowledge and grace another sister would have afforded. Many a time I would berate him over a rug not properly washed, a utensil out of place, things of that petty order. I cannot recall him ever making the same mistake twice.

I had been stalking an Ork for some time, perhaps a few days in the thickest jungle. In my zeal I had left all my sisters behind, pushing forward through the clinging vines. Since my arrival I had grown steadily sicker of the guerrilla action that characterized our campaign. I longed for real combat.
This ork was crafty. It had led our forces on a merry chase, through booby traps and ambush, until our resolved had wavered and finally dropped. I alone pursued. He was crafty, yes. But he was wounded now, and every spatter of red left on a leaf filled me with new purpose.
So intent was I on the pursuit that when the trail finally ended, I spent several minutes fruitlessly searching, convinced that I was missing another sign. Finally I stood, burning with frustration.
I know not what brought my gaze upwards. Perhaps a rustle of fabric against brush, perhaps a quiet breath, perhaps simply a flight of fancy. Nevertheless, my sight was drawn up and I beheld the target of my search, suspended in the branches not three meters above me.
In the moment before he dropped, I had time to see his bandaged hand, bearing a wound gashed by his own blade to lay a deceptive trail, and realize the depths of my folly.
And then it was upon me.

I think the biggest this regiment's artillery should go is grenade launchers and light mortars. They are all about mobility and self reliance. Once they hit dirt and get orders than can move out. No supply trains, no waiting on fuel trucks, just ammo when needed

I think we're forgetting that the unit is a penal one.

They're lucky they get boots. It's just made up predominately of Crocmen because they are literal niggers.

The Administratum and the Munitorum isn't going to waste time, thrones, or resources on fully equipping abhuman dindus. They only have a mounted element because their food supply is almost as dangerous as a genestealer and half as smart
>>
>>53772546
I was not the fighter then that I am today. My own blade had barely cleared its holster by the time the creature hit, knocking me to the ground. He roared, a foul stench roiling from his fetid lips. His thick xenos hide was stained with purple dyes, the significance of which I would come to know well by the end of the campaign.
He drove his knife, a cruel hooked thing, into a vulnerable gap in my armor. Despite the sacraments and protective wards I had laid upon it innumerable times, his beastly xenos strength ripped the blade through and pierced me at the shoulder.
Screaming in furious rage, and pain, and no small amount of fear, I swung my chainsword, only for it to catch in the thick vines entangling the both of us. It took but a moment to shear through them, but the split-second pause was enough for the ork to act. He grabbed at my arm and pried the sword loose with monstrous fingers. Thus satisfied with my disarmament, he continued his task of piercing my armor. Half a dozen times the knife clawed into me.
Suddenly he stiffened, his back arching and mouth tightening into a grimace of agony. Slowly, the long blade of a lance sprouted from his chest.
In the nature of its tenacious ilk, the ork was not felled by the grievous wound. As its wits gathered, it grasped its blade and spun snarling, just in time to meet a trench knife coming the other way.
The Bush Fang I knew as Coats watched the ork choke on its own blood with dispassionate eyes, then let it topple to the ground.
>>
>>53772847
You're right, but they do need to be equipped with something and we should pin that down

>>53772868
PDF gear, stubbers, flak jackets, whatever they can scrounge aside. A shitty busted pintlemount bolter mounted on the flanks of of a giant capybara. Knives made from bone, or wood and teeth...metal if they're lucky.

Few if any Enginseers, though they have mechanicus lay cultists to get things working. Might have gotten lucky and got some of those scout walkers whose name I can never remember. (Sentinels?)

Aside from that I'd imagine they also have an influx of experienced guard to command the company and make up their officer corps.

Lasguns, Bolters, etc should be fairly rare. 1960ish-WW1 era tech. Bolt Action rifles, revolvers, crew served machine guns, mortars single shot grenade launchers...

that sort of thing. A serious lack of stuff like IR goggles and fancy electronics, emphasis on use of carrier pigeons over vox becauuse penal legions just get whatever they can scav, beg, or steal.

I would say Vox and Lasguns are present, albeit hand-me down. Fuck carrier pigeon, if comms are that bad then they'll just send a runner. That being said as long as you keep your nose clean, PRAISE THA EMPRAH, and don't get caught, uniform standards are nigh non existent. This extends to gear.

So every guardsman is issued a shitty Lasgun, a pair of boots, and a green Astra Militarum uniform. But with guile, gilt, or guts, one can trade out their Lasgun for a more familiar Autogun, shotgun, or stubber. Armor is where you can find it, and camo is what you can make it. Religious iconography is pretty common though

The journey back to camp was a long one. I rode half-conscious, secured to Coats' shaggy steed while he cleared a path ahead. Though my mount's footing was assured and steady, it had clearly not evolved for medical transport and my wounds ached with every step.
I faded in and out of delirium. In feverish throes I trembled against the creature's thick fur. The jungle air, thick and hot and humid, offered no respite.
In my clouded thoughts I was returned to the days of my childhood, raised in the great chapel amidst His glorious iconography. His steady gaze from every stained window soothed me now as it had soothed me then. I realized that I had been mumbling scraps of scripture, the earliest litanies, even the nursery prayers I could barely remember.
"For His light shineth ever outwards, and outstrips the brightest suns," I whispered into the mount's fur. "Go and tell the proud and lowest, go and..." I paused, trying to summon the words out of childhood fog, "go and... and..."
"G'wan tell most ev'rywan."
The words, familiar and yet unfamiliar, pulled me out of my drift. With an effort, I pushed myself up and stared at Coats, still resolutely clearing away vines with his knife. "What... what did you say?"
"Dem de words," he said matter-of-factly. "'G'wan' Tell'em. Old song. Good song."
I stared at the back of his helmet for a long moment before my strength ran out and I slumped against the steed once again. But after a moment, I began softly to sing again. And after another, so did he.

We sang our way back to camp, finding strength in the holy words. There was not a single hymn that he did not know, no pause in my memory he could not fill. The words were slightly different, laden with heavy accent and combined in strange ways, but perfectly accurate nonetheless. No longer did I doubt our priest's claims. Whether an exception or not, there was at least one Bush Fang whose piety rivaled, even exceeded, my own.
>>
>>53773293
I agree, at the end of the day, it's still going to be cheaper and easier to give a regiment lasguns and voxes than stubbers and pigeons.

As for their affiliation with the Sisters, how's about this

>Sororitas on quest to find saintly relic follow the trail of breadcrumbs to Qtzelak.

>PDF fucking sucks and the Adeptus Arbites is absent.
>The find a massive shrine complex swallowed by the earth due to seismic activity.
>Fix up shrine and make it a keep
>Bring these heretic shits in line by installing regiments meant to actually reform citizens by forcing them to fight and die for the Emperor
>The Sisters hate the scalies for being Abhuman, but their faith is strong, and those in penal regiments work twice as hard as normies because life in the guard is better, but not easier per say, than life on the streets
>A female Scalie martyrs herself after a particularly noble deed to defend a shrineworld and now the Sisters of Qtzelak are in a political schism because some want to make her retroactively a Sister/Saint of Abhumans/Earned Purity and the others think this is fucking heresy

>Some sisters work with the regiment to ensure the faith and that they are reformed enough to shift to the lax PDF or into a real job. Others respect, begrudgingly or not, the scalies for their zeal and faith and their disciplining of normal guardsmen who are lazy

So Catoblepas works fine for Llamaraptor, especially if they are disgusting, ornery critters, and even though it's a greek word it looks and sounds kinda south American so it wouldn't be too out of place with the Aztec names.

For the Devil Horses, there are a lot of scots-irish names that would work, but for the sake of uniqueness and tying into Creole culture, I say naming them Rougarou or Grunch would be good
>>
>>53776624
Catoblepas are ussualy diseased and riddled with parasites that live in its resilient and thick fur, which when shaved off can provide decent protection from knives, fire, and grazing projectiles. They can spit their toxic saliva up to 150 meters with no small amount of accuracy. They will often preen their fur or that of their troupe mates, which only serves to turn their mouths into breeding grounds for disease and bacteria. An untreated bite from a Catoblepas can be fatal if left to fester, and their breath is a potent irritant akin to a tamer mustard gas.

150 is easy mid range for am m16/m4 with 300 meters being rather difficult for most shooters.

As hilarious as sniper spitters are, reducing the range would be more reasonable. I would say 25 meters is reasonable.

Personally I prefer disgusting Llamaraptors over edgy literal deviant art tier horses
>>
>>53782443
I'm talking about game rules in regard to range for weapons. by rpg and table top rules I was saying that 150m is beyond fucktarded.

Llamaraptors are the way to go, the horse shit looks weird, rapey as fuck.

And 25 meters is still way too much. Its spit, unless these things evolved to be long range spit hunting shit, 25m aka over 80ft is way too long for to be able to manage. I'd say 10-15m would be the upper range of these thing's spitting ability.

>>53782522
That makes sense, especially if they have deathstank breath and a deadly bite

What else needs to be figures out about these guys?
>>
>>53784384
Probably just some more refinement of their tactics and gear and how they operate.

With the mounts and guerilla warfare styles they are well suited to operating on their own. However their Penal status makes it a little confusing. So how are they run? Do they have a bunch of handlers imbedded with the unit who ride with them or are they ordered by more traditional, hard ass officers.

Also what is the definition of Penal for them.

It seems the general consensus is the standard definition of a bunch of criminals.

However I think it might work better if, they are a penal unit simply because they are a less well known abhuman strain. Brass in the Departmento Munitorum and IG figure that might as well give them lowest designation and resources cause they are filthy scalymen. So maybe they don't face as much direct punishment, but due suffer from the lack of great equipment.
>>
>>53784513
Here's my idea

>There are Jails in Qtzelak, but they act more as staging areas where one is sentenced is shipped off
>Greater crimes bring heavier punshiments
>Punishiments consist of deployment rotations, so thievery and the like have only one or two deployment sentences
>Murder or heresy can carry up to 40 deployments
>Rank progression awards good behavior and performance and shortens the sentence
>>
>>53784513
I would say the commisariat just looses them upon the enemy and it's up to the prisoner NCOs and COs that want to get out (or stay in but at greater rank) to keep order and met out punishment. The commisariat steps in to punish higher ups and oversee mass execution/punishment
>>
>>53785918
Yea i just don't see how the penal aspect of this regiment works unless we go with >>53784513 idea otherwise how would we end up with SoB as allies?
>>
>>53784513
I think this works well I'd prefer it be more about their status as Abhumans then anything they do really. Because their culture would deeply worship and honor the emperor.

I think it would be good to say that due to the nature of the living populace on Qtzelak they all must serve in the guard to try and cleanse themselves of their impurity.

Their highest ranking officers once they get too old are allowed to retire and with retirement comes with living on the lower levels or equivalent of a shrine world for these brave soldiers of the Imperium.

Their home plant is a deathworld filled with all sorts of nasty and crazy stuff in all the fluff of death worlds that aren't Krieg where and when do they have time for prisons?

Perhaps I'm too focused on the idea that they could pull of the whole redemption in the eyes of the Imperuim for being good soldiers. I do apologize for that and hope that I don't sound like I'm being a dick. I just think that some light in a regiment that can get grim dark real fast is needed.

Should we add a splash of abbo to the crocmen?

Maybe they huff promethium to see sacred visions and achieve a state of religious ecstasy during prayers

Also remember their planet is a death world. Can we flesh that out more? Anons writefaggotry mentioned chemical runoff. Maybe the planet has great orbital/sky factories and shit that produce goods from the diverse biology and fauna on the planet and just dump their waste products on the land below, where the abhumans (themselves descendents of the original colonists and factory workers) live in stilt villages.

>Regular humans discriminate against the mutant and force them to live in horrifying poverty
>To get through life and put food on the table for their little scalie kids many of the abhumans turn to lives of crime because it's better than dying in a Manufactorum or farm.
>Sisters of Battle come upon planet in the course of quest for holy relic
>Find relic (ruined monastery fortress) and make it their base, and go to fixing their world
>Instal "correctional" regiments that give criminals a second chance at life through fighting and dying for Big E
>These units use amount of deployments as opposed to time for the sentencing
>There are no prisons
>There are Jails in which one is processed, tried, and sentenced and then issued equipment and shipped out. Most of the time within an hour's span. It's like MEPs for real soldiers, plus central bookings
>Due to the underlying sociopolitical issues of the planet, many guardsmen in these units are Crocmen, but not all.
>They enjoy it because it's actually a better life in many aspects and they come out a free man if they survive their sentence. Many will go into the PDF or return to the Correctional Regiment to serve as non prisoner NCOs and officers.
>Sisters view them as the ideal model for abhumans, "For the crimes you have committed you will repent in service of the Imperium. For the crime of your birth, you will repent in Service of the Emperor."
>These Crocmen are in turn extremely zealous and religious, and the Sisters only really hate them for being mutants but other wise respect them as much as one can an abhuman

I prefer the Deathworld as a Prison idea. The planet itself is a prison, the Bushfangs fight to both redeem themselves for the spiritual crime of being abhumans, and to wipe away the very real crimes of their forefathers (perhaps earning the chance for relatives or the occasional baby that's born normal to escape the death world)
>>53788600
>How can we combine Southern Baptist faith with Aztec and Haitian practices?

Snake Handling (attempts to castigate their lizardness onto the snake? Endure viper bites to strengthen their spirit?)

Imperial Saints as Loa/Spirit intercessors, Emperor as creator/high god

A belief in cyclical reincarnation that lets them come back as humans

Emperor as the sun, blood sacrifice strengthens the Emperors power (given a certain incident involving the Grey Knights, such delusional belief isn't that far off!)

The universe is ending, slaying the Emperors enemies keeps the Astronomicon/The Emperors light, lit, and staves off the end for a while

The universe has ended before, will end again, and will be reborn (ties back to cyclical reincarnation)
>>
>>53788649
Looking at that I agree, however I would still make the vicious llamas herbivorous ruminants, simply because a herbivore grazer being a vicious caustic acid spitting bastard that can fuck up predators and eats anything leafy is hilarious, and also entirely in fitting with the deathworld motif. Even their dumb herd animals are fucking dangerous.

It also provides a rational use for them - they strip away encroaching jungle/flora with their ravenous eating, early 'settlers' found them useful and much like most domestication circles it began with mutual benefit - the abhumans protect the Llamas and the Llamas provide valuable fur, are guard llamas, and eat dangerous plants for them.
>>
>>53788568
> Who said they were undeveloped?

It's a death world. Most death worlds don't have the infrastructure where crime is an actual issue where goes to jail for it. Most death worlds, surviving is the main goal. What death worlds have you heard of where there exists enough of a system to jail people for drunken brawls or murder. Most death worlds deal with serious crimes with out right death. Deathworlds are called that cause its super fucking hard for humans, and society to survive there.

>>53788529
I can understand you're idea but it doesn't work given the setting of a death world. If the planet is a death world, there aren't lots of cities or manufactorum cause the planet is really hostile to human life. equally that means there aren't farms, or manufactorums for crocmen to shun.

The only ways you have large scale society/civilization on a death world is if there are Cities built underground or in orbit and most of the time there are very few of those settlements. And if that is the case for this world, it would just make it even more confusing as to how a deathworld, which as standard has very small population manages to have an abhuman population and a normal human population.

And it's fine if there are cities unnaground or in orbit, but then it would make sense that the scalies are excluded from those cities since they are abhumans. But then if the scalies are separated from the general human population, who the hell would be arresting them for their crimes.

And if we go with the idea that the scalies and normal humans of this death world live together in the myriad of cities and villages on this death world, then why are the scalies only ones in the regiments?

The idea

actually makes sense.

>Imperial Saints as Loa/Spirit intercessors
And considering the Sister of Battle living saint unit, it makes a lot of sense for them to believe this and respect the SoB's. Celestine is most likely Eruzilie to them, the Loa synchretized with St. Mary.

Which, if you know anything about Eruzilie, paints a very amusing picture of St. Celestine the SoB's would not like very much if they knew.

What about technically omnivorous, preferentially herbivorous? You can feed them a pile of corpses and they'll be fine, but they do better eating vegetation.
Can't be too picky on a death world, after all.

I'm down with that. Reminds me of goats, who are equally hilarious, and will eat ANYTHING.

I can see the Bushfangs basically using them as living trash disposals.

Rather than bush/digger hats, they should wear Brody helmets, and goggles over their eyes. They developed the ability to keep their eyes open without blinking, but not the inner eyelid many lizards have. This lets them watch and keep their eyes open long term without getting flies and gnats in their eyes.

They also always win staring contests, and the goggles make them look more lizard like.

Uniforms should be very utilitarian and rugged, but when stealth isn't required, decorated with colorful feathers in places. Weapons should be handled or made of bone whenever possible, chainswords and other metal bits dulled and coated black (to create the illusion of obsidian teeth)
>>
>>53789139
the colorful feathers are themselves a defense mechanism, as on their home world they make predators think they're poisonous

>The only ways you have large scale society/civilization on a death world is if there are Cities built underground or in orbit and most of the time there are very few of those settlements.
Then don't have it be large scale. At least comparatively within the context of 40k. Bayou shanty towns reliant on a single Manufactorum for support. Lonely frontier towns that exist soley to house the jailers and move criminals off world. Small single/double story cities. In all cases have walls or other manned fortifications that are emplaced to protect the populace from various threats.

>And if that is the case for this world, it would just make it even more confusing as to how a deathworld, which as standard has very small population manages to have an abhuman population and a normal human population.
I actually was going to follow up on that after I wrote >>53771759, notice how I said that the abhuman populations are localized or originate from a crescent? I was going to follow up on that by stating that a warp storm swept through the system, and may be the cause of the mutation, as I had said that the chemicals and environment didn't cause them entirely

>what do the cities look like?
Grey, lots of rockrete, its required for survival due to a type of burrowing insectoid. Foundations need to be extra thick, so do walls in buildings. Cities are divided into walled districts and sealed off from eachother airlock style by two doors always at least 5 feet thick, made of layers of reinforced steel and rockrete. Sometimes city districts get infested with dangerous wildlife and need to be cleared out before they can be repopulated.

The world is primarily agrarian in industry with massive ranches running cattle to manufactorum towns. Both systems are dependent on one another, the only break in this pattern are the Kreeool Tribals, loose clans of wandering gypsies who follow the polluted rivers and traverse the swamps of the world's megacontinent.

The Abhumans who make up the regiment are a product of an disease caused by a kind of parasite that infests people who drink unclean water or bathe in the bayou waters. It burrows into their skin and infests their guts causing mutations that make them large, ugly, and causes their Body Odor to be rather unpleasant by most people's standards. Due to the endemic infestation of the scale-worm wiping out the abhumans is effectively impossible, and arguably undesirable as their mutations grant them an edge in surviving the harsh wilderness. Thus they make for excellent field guides and campaigners in the wilderness.

Okay, how about this:

The Deathworld was used to dump criminals into some thousands of years ago but eventually someone (the SoB? A Rogue Trader?) rediscovered it and realized there were many unexploited resources that had not been previously discovered.

The majority of the normal humans on the planet live in orbital factories or walled cities and arcologies centered around resources, refineries or manufactoriums.
The abhumans are not allowed in these places, so they survive in shantytowns and such around it, hunting and herding their raptor llamas and keeping the jungle at bay.
Due to their mutation they are considered to be tainted by whatever sin they were dumped there for in the first place and thus all the scaly abhumans are born as technically criminals, thus the penal legion designation.
>>
>>53791097
No offense, but there's some problems with this.

The scalies are proper abhumans, and while looked down on by humans, they're an Abhuman strain.

IoM sanctioned abhumans are humans who have stable, distinct DNA that is mostly human.

The description you give doesn't really make them abhumans, really just mutants, or infected and far more likely to be killed due to fears of mutation or Nurgle worship.

Our arrival back at the camp was momentous, to say the least. My sisters had been troubled by my absence, and despite their respect for my zeal, were on the verge of mounting a search to locate me, or my remains. It is no surprise to me that we arrived just as they were praying for guidance; an abhuman guardsman, leading his shaggy mount, me clinging to its neck whispering hymns with the last of my endurance. It was likely quite a sight.
My sisters pried me from my armor with great ceremony, cleaning and binding my wounds while loudly bemoaning the pestilent nature of orks, jungles, and the Bush Fang's steeds. Soon I was lucid enough to report, which was diligently recorded. For my recklessness, I was expected to mete out my own punishment, and did so as soon as I felt able.
Stinging from my welts, but purer in spirit, I limped from my tent on the verge of evening. To the left lay the path to the nightly prayer group. We would pray in calm, pristine silence. Then, inevitably, my sisters would ask me to recount my glorious victory over the orks.
It was a request I could not fulfill. To tell the story as I knew it would lead to questions, questions I myself could not answer. Why had Coats followed me? I had not seen him amongst our forces when I departed on my lone quest. Had he remained at camp, and chased after me when I had not returned with the group? Or had he been invisibly tailing me the entire journey? Why had he followed me? Was it duty, be it duty of a servant or a soldier? Or was there a spark of sympathy behind the impassive, reptilian features?
Why had he followed me?
To be asked the very questions that burned in me, and be unable to answer, would be impossible to bear.

It was then that I heard the faint strains of speech, laden with heavy, familiar accent. To my right I saw, in the distance, the fires of the Bush Fangs and their prayer group.
Not one Sister had ever attended.
I turned and slowly limped down the right path.

Observer logs:

> The smell is bad. In the course of visiting 4 warzones, I've smelled terrible things, but these ugly critters stink something fierce, like burned hair, burned recaf, and obscenely expensive perfume.

> The bushfangs are a penal regiment of note. That note being that this regiment on the lowest of IG totem poles maintains a massive host of mounts.

>While they lack extravagant resources and even an abundance of basic necessary supplies it can be said that the BushFangs are well equipped to deal with the harsh realities of war. The penal regiment was issued no dress uniforms, poor weather gear, sidearms or other amenities most of our soldiers get. However they seem to make due with what they have. Many of them sport ugly looking coats fashioned from the furs/coats of their mounts and they are excellent for staying dry. They make up for paucity of supplies by constantly making everything they have stretch. The regiment's mess hall and practices would make most inspectors lose their lunch.

> While I'm not familiar with the exact circumstances of their homeworld and their raising, these soldiers, abhumans are intensely devout. They are found of attending Imperial service whenever a Priest or clergy is present, otherwise they often hold their own masses once a week before lunch.

> The scalies are so devout that they have quite a developed relationship with the adeptus Sororitas. I believe it results from some history between the two, but it certainly helps that the scalies are almost as faithful as the Sisters.

>The elite of the mounted bushfangs are bear arms that are courtesy of their Sister allies. The elite catelobas riders wield heavily modified eviscerators, sporting legnthed hafts and mounted into a ball joint on their mount's saddle and tack. These riders use the eviscerators to great effect at rapid strikes against enemy infantry and armor, emerging from rough terrain, charging and immediately fading away.

Even as inexperienced as I was in those days, I had seen my share of the Imperium's foulest enemies. I had cleansed hives of heresy, purged cultists in their worship of the Ruinous Powers. Even on Pensad I led the occasional raid into Ork camps, and beheld their crude religion.
What I beheld, staggering into the prayers of the Bush Fangs, evoked feelings of both, though for a moment I could not understand why. Amidst the guardsmen bent in religious fervor were elaborate pieces of worship, embodying Primarchs and saints. At the head of the mass was a great statue of the Emperor, towering over the ceremony. Below him, a bust of what was clearly Saint Celestine, carved of dark wood. Beneath her, a small mural of a saint I did not recognize, a weeping woman with dark skin.
In a moment I realized where my association had come from. In all my life I had been surrounded by the greatest works of worship, vast pieces of gold and gems and colored glass. Even in my quarters, my most treasured possessions were priceless by any standard: gifts from the bishop when I left his flock to join the Sororitas.
The iconography of the Bush Fangs, though immediately recognizable, had been constructed with anything and everything, it seemed, the soldiers could find. Twisted pieces of metal, carved jungle wood, even spent ammunition casings, made up the majority of the icons. Heaped about them was food, weapons, the occasional piece of jewelry, and the bottles of the homemade rum I had seen in camp. There was a crudeness in their construction that I had never seen in His worship.
Revulsion clawed at me for a moment. These abhumans used even their holy symbols as rubbish piles. I was poised to flee in disgust. But then I recalled Coats. How he knew every hymn I could think of, and even ones I did not. There was an aberration in his form, even his worship, but his faith was undeniable. I had to see if he was the exception, or the rule.

I watched as a guardsman came up from the nearby cookfires with a bowl of some bubbling stew. Before my eyes he knelt before Saint Celestine and with obvious reverence placed the bowl before her, and bowed his head in prayer.
In a wave of compassion, I suddenly beheld the scene with new eyes. What I took for cheap rubbish piled about the saints were offerings, everything that a poor soldier would hold dear. I had thought their icons crude; now I could see the care and craft put into them, working diligently with the best materials they had. What little the Bush Fangs had, they gave gladly to Him.

My unexpected appearance caused little stir. In fact, looking back I believe that it was with an intentional stoicism that they ignored my presence. The Bush Fangs are abhuman, but they are fiercely proud of their faith. To treat me with reverence in their own place of worship would belittle their own faith. It is an attitude that has not endeared them to the Ecclesiarchy, but one that has earned the begrudging respect of many who fight beside them.
A guardsman emerged from the shadows and stood beneath the Emperor. This one, while wearing the same fatigues as his brethren, was bedecked in many brilliantly colored feathers. I had seen many Bush Fangs wear one or two of these feathers, gathered from birds nesting high in the canopy. I had never seen them in such abundance on a single person though.
In his hands he held a serpent, of a kind that had gained infamy among the sisters. Some twist of evolution had gifted it with long fangs of such unusual construction that they could pierce even our holy armor and deliver their venom. If the medics were fast, a victim could be saved, but so far over half a dozen sisters and guardsmen alike had fallen to the species.
This Bush Fang held the snake with no fear as it coiled and writhed in his grasp. It flowed over and around his hands, but he ran them along its scales over and over, until it calmed.

"Is good to see evrywan 'ere," he said. "We be sendin our prayers to T'ird Company, out stalkin de xenos green." He held up the snake, coiled around his wrist.
"Tonight," he said, "We be talkin 'bout Saint Dolorosa."
It took me a moment to place the name. Saint Dolorosa was a minor saint in the sector, a patron of beggars, the crippled, and the destitute. She remains popular among the lower classes, although almost unknown among the nobility. I realized who the woman in the mural must have been. To place her just below Saint Celestine and the Emperor Himself spoke volumes of the Bush Fangs' reverence of her.
"Dolorosa was of de Orders 'Ospitaller," he said. "On 'er planet, she tend to de injurd. She ten' to de sick. She ten' to de rich and de poor, to de high an' de low. To pries' and beggar, to arbites and criminal, an' she never make no diffrence between 'em. Ten t'ousand 'er 'ospital 'eld, an' not one o' dem did not feel 'er love."
The guardsmen swayed silently on their knees before him and the Emperor. The preacher began to uncoil the snake, moving it across his hands in mesmerizing patterns.
"Den," he said, "De traitors came."

"De ones called de Word Bearers fell upon Dolorosa's planet, bringin de lies o' their kind. De guard stood against dem, tall an' proud. But dey fell 'gainst de blasph'mous 'ordes. De PDF stood 'gainst dem, de las' line o' defense. But dey fell too. Until finally all de demons an' traitors an' hell itself pounded on de 'ospital doors.
"Dolorosa 'ad not stopped once in de invasion to rest, to stop workin', to flee 'er post or abandon 'er charges. When de Guard fell, she did not falter. When de PDF fell, she did not quail. Always, she worked to 'eal de sick.
"But when de Word Bearers called deir lies trou de door, den she stood."
He paused, but continued to weave the snake through his hands. I watched as caught in his words as the others. I knew the story, two sentences of a footnote in an Ecclesiacal text, but not like this.

"Dolorosa stood before de vox, an' called out to all 'er patients," he said. "She denounced de traitors, condemned dem to de fury of mankind. She called 'pon evry man, woman, an' chil' to stand 'gainst de 'ordes of Chaos.
"An' every man, every woman, every chil', rose from de beds. De old, de sick, de crippled, dey took up arms, any'ting dey could fin'. Some 'ad guns, if dey could fin' and 'old em. Many o' dem took de knives from de infirm'ries, held em in hands, hands missin fingers, held em in deir TEETH." He smiled for moment, displaying his own sharp teeth. "But mos' o' dem, dey 'ad rocks, an' sticks, or jus' deir bare hands, 'opin fo' nothing more den to clog de guns o' de traitors wi' deir bodies.
"When de 'ospital doors broke open, ten t'ousand humans fell upon de Word Bearers wi' a fury to give 'ell itself pause. De traitor marines made mountains o' de dead, but dere would always be more crawlin' up. Dey trew demselves at de demons, buryin dem, wit guns an' knives an' nails an' teeth, an Dolorosa, preachin', drivin dem on and on trou de vox. An when de Word Bearers, in desperation, broke trou de walls to get to 'er, to silence 'er, she brought de walls o' de 'ospital down, sacrificin 'erself dat dey could never profane its ground.
"Not one man, or woman, or chil', survived dat day. De Word Bearers were not destroyt, de Ruinous Powers were not silenced. It would take t'ree undred years fo' de Guard to drive 'em off de planet, an' de 'ospital was never built again. But for fourteen hours de weak fought 'gainst de strong, and could not be broken. Dey whispered deir lies, but de truth was 'eard. Dey called our Emp'rar "de Crippled God". But de ten t'ousand showed dem dat even de crippled can make dem bleed."

There was a mass exhale of breath as he finished. I am not ashamed to say that I was among them. I've heard an unfathomable number of sermons in my life, but this one I have never forgotten.
"Dolorosa taught dat no matter 'ow low we are, 'ow much we 'ave suffered, we are beloved in His eyes," he said. "An' all 'e asks for His inf'nite love, is... all. All we have. All we are. An' we will be loved.
"An' we 'ave suffered." He drew his free hand down, to touch his scaled face. "An' we are low. We 'ave no riches to give to Him, no great vict'ries to dedicate... no beauty to show 'im. All we can give is our faith, our prayers an' our lives."
He raised the snake again. "But dat is enough!" he said. "We are ab'uman. We are wretched, and low, but we are 'uman still! Know, my broddas, that we are all beloved. All, whedder we be 'uman! Ab'uman! Guard! Sistahs of Battle! Spas Marine! Psykah!" He shook the snake as punctuation, eliciting a hiss with every movement. "We shar' de same light, de same fire, de same love! De lowest beggah, 'long as he gives all 'e can for Him, is as beloved as de richest Bishop! We burn wit de same fury as de mighty Spas Marine, an' we are de same! LET NO ONE QUESTION OUR FAITH!"
He cast the snake upon the ground. It rose and turned on him, hissing fiercely. The Bush Fang moved not a muscle, meeting the viper's furious gaze with the same reptilian eyes. It swayed for a long moment, then turned and swiftly wove its way through the kneeling guardsmen as it fled, still hissing, back into the jungle.
