Hida Ishigaki's story is over, in this thread we tie up loose ends, get the last things from CrabGm and possibly try to convince Crab-anon to tell us the story of his Spider character.

Kata: Strength of the Crab

Unlike her father who spent most of his career stationed on the Kaiu Wall, Daiko received a post in the Army of the East where the primary enemies are other humans, so her knowledge of the Shadowlands is a bit lacking. She inherited her mother's beauty and is very gregarious, raising the morale of her unit with her upbeat personality. Daiko 's weapon of choice is a dai-tsuchi, though she can get caught up admiring any weapon of suitable quality or unique design.

Tetsute resembles his father the most, at least physically. Fierce and competitive, Tetsute's hunger for glory causes him to be frequently reprimanded by his superiors, but they cannot deny his inborn natural gifts make him an asset to the Crab rather than a hindrance... for now. Tetsute loves to awe those around him with tales of his daring feats, his favorite story being the slaying of a great white tiger with his bare hands after stalking it through a bamboo forest.

The handsome features Tsuyosa inherited from his mother are offset by his gaunt, sickly-looking frame. Trained by Ishigaki's best friend Kuni Toshiro, Tsuyosa's magical abilities are an interesting blend of the talents of his mother and his sensei, centering around gathering information, supporting his allies and disrupting his target's ability to heal through supernatural means. Of course, he was still trained by Toshiro, who taught him spells of fire and jade for striking down enemies both Tainted and non-Tainted alike.

Isao is the quiet, shy child of Ishigaki and Naomi. He is fascinated by the way separate components come together to form a final project, and feels more at home carving small wood statues, hammering steel in a forge, or assembling the great siege engines of the Crab Clan than he does interacting with his fellow samurai; often becoming so focused on his task that he loses track of the world around him. Still, Isao's keen eye is well suited to commanding a ballista crew, directing their deadly payload to where they will cause the most damage to the enemy.

The odd-ball of Ishigaki and Naomi's children, Kenpachi has an appreciation of culture that makes him stand out among his fellow Crab. His greatest love is for artistic pursuits, and the highest art of all: the iaijutsu duel. Recently, he had a chance encounter with a young samurai-ko named Doji Naki, and has begun pursuing a relationship with the Crane swordswoman which has led him to learn the unique style that she is developing.

I have a question, did Monkey and Mantis' kids get character sheets too?
>>
>>54095900
Incidentally, Crab-anon (Ishigaki) and I love that image! Thanks for a good laugh!
>>
>>54096669
Sadly, no. The full character sheets for the kids came way after the campaign had wrapped up, and Mantis-san's player has quasi-drifted out of our social circle while Monkey's player moved out of the city. I can try to get some input from them, however.
>>

bummer, but thanks for the answer!

Did Kitsuki's player specify why had he really never responded? Grudge, cutting off old ties as a part of a new life, something else, combination?
>>
>>54096768
Takeshi tried to distance himself mostly out of fear that he would be swallowed by feelings of resentment and bitterness and lash out at his dear friends. His mind kept telling him that it wasn't Ishigaki or Naomi's fault, but his heart was unstable - partially due to the Taint's influence. It's like Toshiro told the party: emotions can be a BITCH.
>>

Damn, Kitsuki deserved a better end.

Though he went into seclusion, he did still end up writing several journals and passing his wisdom down to future generations. I have to admit
I did not expect this at first
But, I gotta admit, Ishigaki definitely deserves a post mortem thread

Well done, sir
Well done

Looking forward to your next bit of writing, when that happens

While I'm here, small correction to the epilogue in >>54095158 I made, courtesy of GM (while I asked aplenty about the Summer Court and what happened to the others, I forgot to ask him of the epilogue to make sure I was correct)

The cipher decoded was not a Spider cipher, but a Scorpion cipher, hence why we are in Scorpion lands currently

And that troop of ashigaru accompanying us? A full platoon of 200 with a gunso, in Imperial Legion colors, with one of the Imperial Legions at full strength at the Scorpion border, ready to attack if Tsuruchi-san doesn't send his reports in time

That, and Daikakita Tatsuya has already in the meantime been immortalized in-setting through song, writings and plays (mostly written by Crane spinning the story into something favorable to them, of course) as the jitte-carrying Crane who alongside a Blue Dragon, a Black-beaked Crane and a Wasp cut down an insidious Snake
>>
>>54101146
Crane-san, if you could glance through this and make sure I didn't miss a post that would be nice.

Also if there are any corrections.
>>
Additionally. Here is 2.0 of Ishigaki's story. The entire story is present. When I finish with the editing, and make everything all nice, it will be posted to the L5R general and possibly a storytime thread. I'll also add the character sheets for everyone at the end of the pdf, as well as the character art.

Cheers, everyone.
>>
>>54101398
Awesome, thanks!
>>
>>54098631
Oh! Wow... um, a lot of them. Pretty much anyone who the PC's had to face directly in battle or have close interactions with got a full character sheet. I have a three-ring binder for campaign notes and such, and the NPC's take up like 3/4 of it!

Characters who were more in the background of the adventure would get a brief summary. An example from the Winter Court hosted by the Crane would be:

Ikoma Masahiro (Ikoma Bard 4)
The head of the Lion delegation. Jovial and boisterous, but prone to bouts of drunkenness and a shameless womanizer.
Notable Skills: Jiujutsu (Improvised Weapons) 5
Primary Rolls: 9k4
Secondary Rolls: 6k3

or

Soshi Mariko (Soshi Shugenja 3)
A shugenja accompanying the Scorpion delegation. She is one of the junshin, though still uses her magic to assist her clan in the political arena.
Notable Skills: Sincerity (Honesty) 5, Investigation 3
Primary Rolls: 8k4
Secondary Rolls: 5k3

Again, thank you for doing this

Mostly because I can see my early writings again

And damn, i tried too hard to copy ishigaki's early style without adding a part of me to it that it feels slightly cringey to read it
Do think I came more into my own towards the end there, but I dont think first person perspective is for me

And I wont be trying to write in present tense either, it already felt wrong then, feels even more so now
>>
>>54101590
One last thing I think might be worth mentioning

When I made Daikakita Tatsuya, and the Daikakita vassal family, I made one thing perfectly clear to GM about them that I can't remember having mentioned before

The Daikakita cannot trace their lineage back to Kakita, or Doji, at least not along the primary line
Those whose ancestor is either of them have married into the Daikakita family
The first samurai ancestor took on the name of Kakita, was only one of his followers
To make it even more clear, the Daikakita are born with black or brown hair, and most, like Tatsuya, bleach it to look white like all of the other Crane

Hoping Crab-DM is still here, since this campaign was a LOOOOONG running thing, were there any memorable moments for you where one of your players catched you off-guard?
Reading through the stories, I keep wondering how much happend due to player initiative/creativity.
>>
>>54101992
Oh, most definitely! In fact, they almost never stayed "on script." Most of the memorable moments to me didn't involve them short-circuiting the adventure so much as leaping to a seemingly random conclusion.

Takeshi and Daigo ambushing Takeshi's sensei with jade powder ("Die you tainted bastard!")

Monkey making a near suicidal Athletics check to obtain the Trident of the Ningyo from the submerged cavern.

Ishigaki electing to fight Bayushi Kentaro in a duel, foiling the Scorpion Clan's plan to eliminate one of the Crane Clan's powerful pieces (the kenshinzen) from the playing field.

Takeshi asking Amano to "get Aoi away from me" without really thinking about what could happen (putting someone/something in a barrel became a bit of a long running table gag).

Toshiro "dismissing" Ishigaki so that the party could be covering more ground during the Crab/Scorpion conflict.

Ishigaki actually deciding to spare Bayushi Kentaro.

Soo many times where the players did something unexpected, but it was always a ton of fun.
>>
What was the mechanics behind the kyujutsu competition?
>>
>>54102120
Each participant had 5 arrows. Reflexes/Kyujutsu roll against a base TN 10 against a standard target for 1 point. Each raise called represented hitting a more difficult target for an additional point.

Commander target was a base TN of 20 (10 + 10 for Heavy Armor). In order to get any points off it however, you needed to call 2 raises to hit the "lungs" (5 pts points), or 3 raises to hit the "heart" (7 points) or 4 raises to hit the "eyes" (10 points).

This doesn't quite line up with the earlier stat block given for Ishigaki because well...I've got to many versions of him lying around. Anyway, I'm almost 100% certain this is him, starting out the events at Shiro Kuni. So I may have refrenced some Kata he didn't actually have in story, and I defenitely got the timing wrong on when he reached insight rank 6. I'm sure someone will notice his insight seems wrong. GM houserulled rank 5 in a lore skill nabs you +5 insight. Everyone's exp count being a bit different from one another was due to missed sessions and GM giving out bonuses here and there for good roleplaying, esp if you played your own disadvantages to lighten his workload.

I can, but she was always described as fragile and having more inner strength rather than being shredded. I thought she was running on Elemental Blessing (Water) or something like that, not being strong enough to wrestle an ogre into the fucking ground.

Well, the opening adventure involved the Crane doing the Here's some huge piles of rice kill lion plz to the Crab, so Kenny, Daiko and Isao were all running around together. Advantages: Allies (Blades of Zankuro; Influence 1/Devotion 4), Balance, Elemental Blessing (Earth), Perceived Honor (5), Social Position (Master of Earth)

Disadvantages: Dark Secret (Bloodspeaker), Insensitive

Spells: As the Master of Earth, Hohiro has access to any spell he requires, save for those taught only by specific clans. Hohiro also knows the following maho spells: Blood and Darkness, Inspire Fear, Caress of Fu Leng, Pain, Spreading the Darkness, Armor of Obsidian, Summon Oni, Strength of Darkness, Curse of the Kansen, Fierce Blood of the Earth

The ultimate mastermind of the campaign, Isawa Hohiro is a cunning, cautious and exceedingly dangerous opponent. Having learned well every lesson his father taught him, and bolstered by his knowledge of the dark arts, Hohiro could have become one of the greatest villains in the history of Rokugan had Ishigaki and his companions not intervened. Aside from his personal power, Hohiro also has a band of murderous ronin, the Blades of Zankuro, who do his bidding throughout the Empire and work to spread his influence. he has taught several members of the ronin band the secrets of maho, though most remain untrained in the art of blood magic.

So... The summer war ended, we did some light rping for Kenny's fall activites, and have moved on to Winter Court. I had just finished going for a ride with two Unicorn and a Crane (some comedy of errors involved in that) and we had JUST stabled the horses when one of my cats dropped a nuclear powered shit. Milti-cat formula litter did NOTHING. I had to turn the A/C off, open the window AND make a fucking febreze fort.

So when I finally sat back down I looked ForeverGM in the eye and said: Since the horse just took a mega dump Kenpachi is going to make an etiquette roll to suggest we leave the stable while NOT loosing his composure.

damn it, kinda wishing i could be at that table

Everybody wishes they had a GM like CrabGM, alongside players like Crab-san

by the way, how much editing did you do when writing the Memoires of a Stonewall compared to the sessions?

As in
What did you change compared to what happened tableside? Anything where you switched around maybe timeline-wise? Adding, removing, or somewhat altering because it would fit better, it would work better storytelling-wise, or even because you just couldn't remember everything, so something had more or less importance just because you didn't remember enough around it to give it the same screentime as during the session?

I'd say in your case most obviously would be not writing that much about the family life of the others, especially Monkey and Mantits, simply because of the perspective, but I'm curious as to what other bits were altered

Got quite a few, though they were mostly due to memory not being the best, and not having taken enough notes while playing, though there was one or two major changes that didn't happen during any session, because it meant amping up the samurai drama-iness of the story (GM gave his blessing to those changes for that very reason, so I don't feel guilty about it)
>>
>>54114656
90% of the concious changes I made were translating from table speak to full blown in char. Because 90% of the time, we were using table speak and letting dice rolls decide whether our Chars put their foot in their mouths or not.

Straight from the book of Sun NotTzu: One may know how to conquer without being able to do it. If you take your time to think up some great in char line, that's fucking wonderfull. it's not essential.

Sorry, I got off on a tangent there because people think I'm a better gamer then I really am.

Anyhow, the other 10% was done in the name of making combats flow properly. Of course no one remebers ever die roll from every fight, so I just made shit up. We COULD remeber who was involved, I looked up or guessed the stats, got a rough idea of how it would flow, then just wrote.

More memorable fights, like the Kenjutsu and Iaijutus tourney, boss battles and the like were obviously more in line with how they went at the table.

Mantis and Monkey didn't really rp their family connections all that much, or bring them up save Monkey deciding he didn't want bitter betrothal after all. Mantis... I think since he took a couple of disadvantages he thought wouldn't come up and then had entire adventures written around them was afraid of ForeverGMs power level. Maybe I'll do a one journal page style thing for kenny about the comedy of errors part of that ride to showcase how right he is to fear that...

So yeah, anytime the mechanics seem to not make sense behind the scenes, it's because I was smoothing things out so I didn't wast an entire post going 'and then i hit it two more times for not much damage so i hit again next round and got two tens and then...' And you can only describe savage injuries so many times before it becomes obvious you're dealing with a person that has meat points. Then it's not a story of a world with living people in it. The gloss over on the Kamu being perhaps the most eggreious example

I got the idea to do it that way from pic related, actually.

Sorry I missed this!

Had Aoi been present, I would have removed her Fire affinity during the Eclipse. I probably would have had a Heroic Opportunity to save her when she suddenly finds her power diminished at a critical moment in the fighting.

This is one of the few times I'm going to directly contradict what was stated by the developers in the Clarifications/Errata thread on the old AEG forum, as they specifically said the Moshi retain their ability to cast higher rank spells at night - which sounded to me like they just said

>Oh, yeah, so the Moshi just get two Affinities, but at night they suffer a -1k0 penalty casting Fire spells.

Yeah, okay Shawn... but that is NOT what you guys wrote! You wrote that their Affinity for Fire spells is lost a night!

This is Kentaro during the peace talks, before his cousin, Bayushi Amano, committed seppuku. Soon after, he achieves Insight Rank 3, but delays returning to the dojo to received the 3rd technique of the Bayushi ryu, instead deciding to focus on a different path. He would have certainly lost the duel to the first blood against the kenshinzen, at least legally, but would have followed through with the attack and claimed to have been unable to check himself in time. However, Ishigaki just happened to be around to muck things up...

This is Kentaro when Ishigaki faced him on the field of battle after the death of Bayushi Amano. Kentaro swears a vendetta against Ishigaki, though he is later convinced to keep it personal between the two (leaving Naomi and the children out of the affair).

Fun story, during the 1 on 1 session last night, the court Kenpachi was attending was located in the Scorpion Clan lands (having been neutral in the Crab/Crane - Lion/Mantis conflict). While walking through the garden at night, Kenpachi came upon a lone Scorpion samurai with a mast that covered the right side of his face. The two exchange brief words and then the Scorpion was on his way. Bayushi Kentaro still lives... and he has not forgotten Ishigaki.

Toku Tokichiro is also at this winter court. He's grown up pretty sheltered, Minor Clan and all. So he's looking around with wide eyed wonder at this great big world he's in, and he's doing that thing Satoshi used to do where he tries to hard to make friends and breaches etiquette.

Kenpachi spent a day tagging along behind Tokichiro, smoothing things over, making polite excuses, and trying to keep him from making TOO much of an ass of himself. And the hackles on the back of Kenpachi's kneck are raised up. Some nobody Monkey from the sticks just happens to get an invitation to this court where there are Imperial family members overseeing the peace talks to the last Crane/Lion summer war? god, I remember first time I read that story, it's one of the stories that made me hope one day I'd have something worth telling on /tg/

Can see your point on describing the fighting, found them the most difficult to describe without going "I hit, he hit, I missed, he missed". It's a good thing that L5R combat is so quick and deadly, makes it a bit easier to describe at times

>>54116457

>I am very happy that you stuck throughout everything with us

So am I, wasn't sure half the time, especially early on, how welcome my storytime was alongside Crab-san, but it's been a fun and fullfilling experience

Now I just need a way to keep my L5R fix until the campaign gets going again

By the way, something I forgot to mention that I was a bit pleased about

I think I mentioned how Daidoji-san managed to get himself owing a favor to a Moto death priest during the Summer Court, in part because he wasn't that familiar with the dangers of court yet (both in and out of character), and I wasn't around to keep him safe

Guess who was on the ship carrying Daikakita's body, keeping it in good condition until it could be brought home, when the ship was lost

Hida Isao, dear elder brother

I am writing to appraise you of the recent goings on at the court in Quite Streams Caste. Say what you will about the Clan of Secrets, their aesthetic is truly beautiful. There are small streams running through the caste and surrounding town, and a thick bamboo forest as well. It creates a dark, subdued and relaxing atmosphere. At night the firefly dance most exquisitely, and the sound of gently flowing water can be heard everywhere

I had some success in brefrending a Mirumoto. He was a Swordsman and Sword smith both, and saw his path to enlightenment to be the creation of a perfect katana. Ambitious, to be sure, but then the Dragon do tend to be proactive in their pursuit of enlightenment. We had several long and peasant discusions on the nature of the blade, and how complex it truly it is. Afterwords, I acted as the intermediary to introduce him to Yaskui Gunpei-sama, and was praised for helping to expand the Clans social contacts at court.

Seeking to expand upon my success, I approached a man named Ide Wang-Li, seeking inroads into the Unicorn. Among their number was an Utaku maiden who put up a wall around herself at court, and I hoped to break that wall down. We would be spending the next three months together in court, and it would be awkward if I did not speak to her at least a few times.

He invited me to go for a ride with them, and I accepted gladly, for you well know we do not have many opportunities to do so back home. We were also joined by Doji Kurama-sama head of the Crane delegation, and an acquaintance of Wang-Li.

The others quickly broke into a gallop, and I was hard pressed to keep their pace. We reached the top of a hill, and Wang-Li-sama sighted upon a hare. He and Kurama-sama gave chase leaving me alone with Utaku Rikia-san
>>
>>54129974

She was, at first, cold. I tried to break the ice with conversation about horses, and some self depreciating humor regarding my mediocre abilities on horseback.

Though her answers were polite, they also did not leave much room for further conversation.

I looked about us, searching in vain for some other topic, when I saw truly the hill upon which we stood.

You are an artist yourself, Isao. You understand when the need to create overtakes one. Despite it being midday, the hill seemed dark. A lonely bamboo forest was visible, as were streams and small bridges. Only she, I and our horses were visible. The sense of isolation was utter and complete, and complimented her aloof demeanor.

I had to paint it.

She looked up in surprise as I quickly brought out my paper, brush and inks, for I am never without them. I beseeched her not to move and she acquiesced as my hands set about their task of releasing the painting trapped within the paper.

When I was finished a gentle breeze stirred both her own hair and her horses mane, hinting at the fact they would soon ride the winds once more, so that while the painting conveyed a sense of loneliness, it was not sad at all.

When I showed her the painting, she was surprised at the aura she projected. I seized upon my chance, and asked her why she was so distant.

Her cold exterior was symptom, you see. At a young age, her mother had perished protecting Rika from bandits. The very horse RIka was brushing down had borne her to safety while her mother died in battle. Rika had not yet come to terms with her mother's sacrifice.

I was struck with an image of our own mother, so small and sickly, striding into the shadowlands to know her new Clan, the challenges her children would one day face. I said as much to Rika, that is in the nature of every mother to shield their young with a fierceness that they would never show at any other time.
>>
>>54129984

At last, I had broken through. And I was pleased with myself for making another contact, and a difficult one at that. To seal my victory, I offered Rika the painting, so she could show her mother what a fine woman she had grown up to be.

Wang-Li and Kurama returned then, and we headed back to the castle and court. As we stabled our horses, and evaded a difficult situation I will not elaborate on here, Wang-Li asked how I got along with Rika.

And answered that we had become friends and he responded with a smile, and nudged me with his elbow. I felt a sense of dread and hoped that did not mean what I thought it might.

I feigned ignorance, claiming I did not understand his gesture, and he accepted that easily. So Ide-sama spoke more plainly, that while Rika was a beautiful and desirable woman her aloof nature was driving away suitors.

I had no such intentions. While Rika-san is atractive, you know my heart is taken with Doji Naki. But it was far to late to simply correct his misunderstanding. He had arranged a ride for us, made an excuse for us to be alone, and was indeed pleased to be seeing to RIka's marriage prospects. At this point, 'oh, you misunderstood' would be an insult, and cost face for the Clan.

I panicked at first, thinking I had trapped myself into a marriage I could not escape from when my heart belonged to another. Then I hit upon a wonderful solution. I convinced Ide-sama that I was acting on behalf of another person, a shy, sensitive soul who would never find a bride on his own.

The Clan should be contacting you soon in regards to your future marriage negotiations.

May you be strong in your grief.

Your beloved and littlest brother, Hida Kenpachi

Matsu Keji may well have been the finest warrior in Rokugan at the time of the Kenjutsu tournament. for he is a pure and simple soul. He cares nothing for rank, has no skill at leading men. His only desire in life is to face strong foes, to test himself as a warrior at every opportunity. He is easily bored outside of battle, and has the unfortunate habit of speaking his honest opinion of other samurai's skill at arms. Though his honor is pure, he is on the verge of gaining the black sheep disadvantage. Only his skill in war keeps him in the Lion Clan's good graces...for now. His best friend is his horse, Matsukaze, a rare Unicorn riding steed given to him when he stood beside the body and still living horse of a Moto who gave him a good fight, ensuring both horse and samurai were returned to his family.

Akodo Yoshi has two very big secrets he keeps to himself. The first is the fact that his connection to all and nothing is very, very weak. The second is that age seems to be catching up to him faster than his peers, and his eyes have begun to fail him.

His lack of connection the void was known to his immediate family, and their disappointed stares drove him to train day and night, frequently to the point of loosing consciousness.

His hard work paid off, and he is now one of the feared Kensei.

His greatest fear is that his eyes will continue to weaken until he is blind, and do so before he dies in proper battle. The thought of living his last decades a blind monk terrifies him.

Doesn't matter, it would be useless in Yoshi's situation.

Anyone can gain tattoos. This happens so many times in the setting without joining any of the three orders, and even happens spontaneously on occasion.

Anyone may make the effort to learn the techniques. The question is whether they will make that effort.

What you're doing is being a completely obtuse or wilfully ignorant roadblock. I hope you find the nemuranai that helps with those.
>>
>>54146344
>Bushi can learn kiho. Bushi cannot learn spells.
Wrong.

>Anyone can gain tattoos. This happens so many times in the setting without joining any of the three orders, and even happens spontaneously on occasion.
If anyone could everyone would. And even if the tat can appear does not mean it will.

>>54146344
>Anyone may make the effort to learn the techniques. The question is whether they will make that effort.

No, the question if there will be anyone to teach them.

>nemuranai that helps with those.

And this is why I hate high-magic settings. Magic cheapens everything, handwaving away any tention or challenge from the conflict. At least, when the setting is run poorly.

>What you're doing is being a completely obtuse or wilfully ignorant roadblock.
And you haven't provided any helpful answer. Instead of smugly throwing vague notes like an asshole you are you could give the conrete examples. And realise that half of those won't work without breaking the setting conventions. But you can't feel superior if you actually reply honestly, can you?

Persistent searching rewards. Rokugan is a big place, and if you think there will be no one, anywhere, ever, willing to train them, then you're mistaken.

>And this is why I hate high-magic settings
You hate high magic settings because you're absolutely set against a solution that >>54146054 brought up, and I only referenced for your obvious issues with no other conversational connection? Ok. Sounds to me like you're just looking for things to complain about.

>And you haven't provided any helpful answer.
Wrong. We've talked about official rpg book and unofficial answers, and both are very helpful when you're being less dismissively (You)-like.

>>54147050
>Persistent searching rewards. Rokugan is a big place, and if you think there will be no one, anywhere, ever, willing to train them, then you're mistaken

And you're mistaken if you think that you can find something just because you search. There might be people that can help Yoshi here, but there is no guarantee that he will be able to reach them. Time is finite, plus he has clan duties.

>>54147050
>You hate high magic settings because you're absolutely set against a solution that
>>54146054
>brought up, and I only referenced for your obvious issues with no other conversational connection? Ok. Sounds to me like you're just looking for things to complain about.

You're quoting the wrong post, I think. But to reply to what you're probably referring - yes, I fucking hate when all the challenges, problems or trials one can face in a setting can be handwaved with just one word "magic", like what you're trying to do here. This is a shitty way to run things, because it's boring and completely devoid of any thrill. Asides from the thrill of powerwanking maybe, but that's just bottom.

>Wrong. We've talked about official rpg book and unofficial answers, and both are very helpful when you're being less dismissively (You)-like.
>How's that projecting working out for you? Get a popcorn maker, some nice speakers, you could have a home cinema.

The answers you have "provided" are so vague and thrown-off that you might have not answered at all. There are techniques? Name them, give their actual names as well as conditions to find them, learn them and utilize them. Tattos? Kihos? If they are so easy to get as you say, then why does not everyone, or even half of Rokugan population has them? Get off your high horse and actually answer instead of inflating your own ego at others' expense.

Read the school tag list, champ. Bushi can learn monk techniques, and thus learn kiho.

Still only partially relevant to the actual proposed solution - not using the kiho, but using their existence (Earth Needs No Eyes, Eight Directions Awareness, Banish All Shadows, etc) in setting and examples of pure working harder to overcome disabilities (Taoist Archer, various blind samurai within the fiction) to overcome the disadvantage, in the process creating an unofficial technique.

>And you're mistaken if you think that you can find something just because you search
Search, ask, speak with the GM, and be prepared/offer to spend XP to push it forward. If after genuine effort you can't advance even one inch in the direction you're after, then go back to 'speak with the GM'.

To add my opinion to this little dispute, understand this: exceptions don't make the rules and tags are a mechanical limitation to hinder powergaming.

Now, about kiho. They are technics mainly thaught by the brotherhood to their members and sometimes to outsider orders. A kiho can technically be learned by any human with enough dedication in lore, but the rules limit it to monks for balance.

As for the tattoos, the magical ones a limited to the Togashi, BUT lore has shown/said that a few exceptions existed. Those people were very close to either Togashi himself or the inkmaster. Another exception is of course the inquisitor order of the phoenix, which was gifted the secret to create their Tattoo. Also, magical tattoos are not ordinary ones.

An example of a blind samurai with "sight" would have been the late Phoenix champ, Tsukihime, but no idea if there was any mechanic in lore for her beyond having a fuckhuge Void ring.

Tl;dr: Exceptions are not rules, but they exist and Tags are mechanical powerstops.
>>
>>54148232
Small adition:
Rumors say that the Scorpion clan has their own magical tattoos, but those are just superstitious tongues.

And as always, RYW.
>>
To add some fuel into the rules discussion:

Say a shugenja is casting a multi-action high rank spell. Then he sees that this spell is no longer necessary, and stops the cast. Does he lose the spell slot?
>>
>>54148232
Hmmm, the only Tsukihime on the wiki is a bloodspeaker...

>As for the tattoos, the magical ones a limited to the Togashi, BUT lore has shown/said that a few exceptions existed. Those people were very close to either Togashi himself or the inkmaster.
After Togashi, either Hoshi or Hitomi (after they left Ningen-do) could spontaneously tattoo someone. 1st edition would allow you to either take a high cost ally or kharmic tie to a Dragon clan character and take a tattoo that way. GMs could potentially ask for both, then the cost of the tattoo.

>>54148387
Interruption by outside influence does not cost a spell slot. I'd assume choice is the same.
>>

You should read the clarifications/errata, my dude. This question is answered in full.

>Can bushi learn kiho? No

Of course, that only settles the mechanics part of the debate.
>>
>>54148829
>Bushi can learn monk techniques
Mechanics settled right there, as far as I'm concerned. If you want to pull on it further, that's your thing.
>>
>>54148875
Right, not now I feel like you are missing an integral part of Akodo Yoshi's character. He does not WANT to become a monk, he WANTS to die a glorious death as a bushi on the field of battle. If he shaves his head, all of his hard work mastering the blade will be for naught.
>>
>>54148955
Not now?

OTOH, right now we're discussing a tangent of a divergence of an aside, wherein you think I'm suggesting retirement into a monastery.
>>
>>54149305
Right, but now

You don't get to learn brotherhood techniques without joining an order.

You don't get to join the order without giving up your life as a samurai.

And in case you are talking about a non-brotherhood monk "school," you seem to be completely ignoring the setting conventions of joining a school outside the one you are being trained in. That is to say, it is an extremely rare and requires unique circumstances to be obtained.
>>
>>54149616
>You don't get to learn brotherhood techniques without joining an order.
That's where you're wrong, and by the way you hedge yourself afterwards, you know it.

Suggestion still remains to work on unofficial options, no matter how much you attempt to push the conversation otherwise.
>>
>>54149665
>That's where you're wrong, and by the way you hedge yourself afterwards, you know it.
On the contrary, I know full well I am correct. You simply strike me as a person who understands the game mechanics without understanding or appreciation of the lore of the setting, so I figured you would say "he can just join a non-brotherhood school like the Togashi Tattooed Men" and I wanted to head that argument off. The setting makes it quite clear: if you are a monk in the Brotherhood of Shinsei, are no longer a samurai. The setting also makes it clear that techniques are not shared wily-nilly to anyone who comes asking for them. They require time, training and most importantly dedication.

>>
>>54141898
Well, it's certainly better than the canonical L5R names. At least these are actual names people have and not just random Japanese words. Like, I get that having the Sparrow Clan founder literally be called Sparrow is fun, but as far as I know, Suzume is not a name people actually have. And that's one of the least dumb ones. Otaku family, anyone?
>>
Finally meeting up with some of the party, having a few drinks and already slightly drunk, with Togashi-san and Daidoji-san, and was reminded of stuff I had forgotten

Apparently Daidoji-san managed to not only blame his illegitimate geisha bastard on an Otomo while at court, but he paid someone to burn the geisha house while posing as an Otomo

Personal victory, but still
>>
>>54152837
Suzume is fine for a fictional character. Otaku is not.
>>
>>54152837
L5R characters name themselves, and generally, people fated to found a clan either
A: "happen" to choose the exact name of their future clan's animal
or
B: get retroactively named that by an Emperor and his legion of historians. There's only one accurate historical record in the whole country, and it's a top secret. All official records are heavily censored and edited, and the official Imperial records overrule all other records.
>>
>>54152837
Otaku isn't even that bad, since it does have other meanings.
But there's a fairly important minor character whose personal name is literally Baka. And he's a goddamn imperial.
>>

My biggest gripe is with the fact that Suzume is a man. Because Suzume is a Japanese name, if a bit of an uncommon one. But it's exclusively a woman's name.

While it has gotten better, L5R is still dragging a lot of its "weebs who know nothing about Japan" baggage around. To be honest, I kind of wish they'd gone harder with the reset to make it read less like the stuff I posted on freeform anime RPG forums when I was 13.
>>
>>54153326

Kinoshita Tokichiro changed his name, upon his promotion to a general in the Oda Clan, taking characters from the names of several of Oda Nobunaga's famous/well respected retainers and making up the name Hashiba Hideyoshi.

So, historical precedent for that, and anyone who did not know that before reading this should feel much shame.

OTOH, "Don't choose a famous name. Choose your name, and make it famous" is in the fluff of L5R. So you're both right.

A truth with some modification. The thing with Japanese is that all syllables are the same length unless you add a small tsu or an extra sound somewhere. This leads to some weird shit with English speakers, who are used to putting more of an emphasis on the vowels.

For example, the name Shinsuke. A Japanese person reads that as Shi-n-su-ke with each part being as long as the other. So yes, the n sound is meant to be as long as the shi. An English person wants to put an emphasis on the u and e at the end in particular and would probably want to call him Shin-Soo-Kee. So the Japanese pronounciation ends up sounding like Shinske to an English speaker because not stressing the vowels is foreign to them.

So the u's aren't silent as much as vowels are often shorter in Japanese than English, particularly since the flow of English particularly tends to focus on vowels in the middle of a word (for example ba-NA-na).

*Bayushi Amano's True Love does not represent a romantic love, but rather a deep, brotherly love forged during their childhood together.

Takeshi's faithful friend and ally, Bayushi Amano assisted the Dragon magistrate throughout the campaign by using his extensive web of connections. Notable for his ability to seemingly appear and disappear at will (much to Ishigaki's annoyance), Amano experienced a series of unfortunate events that would culminate in him being forced to foil the plans of his own clan for what he saw to be the greater good of the Empire. Horrified at the prospect of facing the Traitor's Grove for his actions, Amano chose to commit seppuku.

Thank you. I was not expecting him to have an emphasis in Noh.

Is there any particular stat sheet or other system you use, GM-sama? I couldn't find any that seem fitting for the final edition.

Also, if you don't mind, I'll probably include all these characters in an appendix at the back.

Editor-anon, where did you find those adorable dragons?
>>
>>54176815
There is an artist on tumblr and other websites that has done a collection of these and other adorable animals.

I don't know how mad the janitors get about links, so I'll just leave this name: heathersketcheroos.
>>
Also, forgot to mention. I'm nearing 2/3 of the story edited. From there it should be a quick lookover of the first third give or take, then some spacing and bookmarks, and the basic edition will be done.

From there I'll hunt about for a reasonable font, add the art and character sheets, and clean up any mistakes from the basic edition, and call it good.

This post was not an excuse to post this image.

That image would have been so much more fitting for these threads.

Will you be posting the edited material in the L5R gen, if it continues to live for a while?
>>
>>54177278
I found it the day before, sadly.

It will go there first, and possibly into a storytime thread if there is one convenient.

Well...for stat sheets we mostly use notebook paper or print offs of the basic sheet in the back of the book...

But I'm looking at Kenny's sheet right now. and realizing that's not going to work for everyone. Trying to reflect the broad training of a samurai, combined withe some poet skills since the way of the samurai is the twofold way of pen and sword, plus doing the if my backstory suggest some things then I take them like hunting so I don't get lost in the shadolwnds for my gempuku and stealth so I don't get eaten by something I cannot kill while I'm there, and all the damn macro skills... he dosen't have enough room.

I rememeberd you saying you would add stat blocs and art in the back as an aendix, which is why I wanted to make sure we had all the stats everyone wanted to see. I think you should change the line 'does not represent' to 'may not represent' in Amakidnappa's stat bloc.
So, whatever you can find that you can fit those stats on. In the meantime I'll crack the whip at foreverGM to get him to pick up his artwork production.

You're the only one in denial here.

How do you have such all round great taste ForeverGM?
>>
>>54179970
>ForeverGM

oops. Guess that was one post I should have avatarfagged on. I stopped because it wasn't really necessary for most of the Q&A.

But to answer your question, I have all around great taste because I'm an all around great guy. Except when I'm not, which is most of the time. To put it another way, I don't really know why so many people have shit taste, but by god I pity them for it.

Satoshi's player would use the character sheets with the clan icons printed on them, but for the most part it's as Crab-anon said: we'd just use the basic character sets and I'd write the npc's on notebook paper and draw relationship webs on printer paper. Though ever since I got my Second City boxed set, I do have those premium character logs sitting around unused.

Oh! I don't know it it's helpful but when I write up the NPCs, I do use the format seen in Enemies of the Empire. I also realize that I have been leaving off Honor, Status and Glory/Infamy. This mostly had to with my thinking that since these are unverifiable (they just rise and fall on their own without xp costs associated) there would have been questioning of the numbers being "legit" so I decided to leave them off. I can post the ranks when I get home so they can be added to the final versions.

I have one last question, do Crab-san and ForeverGM have any plans to do another run?
If so, I humbly request they storytime again
