Need help coming up with gods for my setting.

>Set on Earth, centuries after the 'Day of Oblivion' wiped out the 'Precursors', aka modern civilization
>Elves, dwarves, orcs etc. are mutated strains of homo sapien
>The apocalypse also brought magic back to the world, stronger than ever before

What should the people of this world worship?
>>
i love lore like this

these are some ideas from my own world

>nuclear irridated cities are thought to be places where the gods enacted their vengeance on mankind, as a result most people stay away from them, although many go treasure hunting for prewar technology

Old Pagan gods, maybe?
>>

not OP but i agree that pagan gods would come back.
a religion that promotes nature, being warlike and fearless of dying and promoting honour is perfect for this kind of world

Don't forget a cult of local heroes and Warlords! I don't think old pagan Gods would come back in any recognizable form, unless you are the perennial type. Certainly the shape of them would be imitated.

I think it would really depend on the environment, harsh resource less desert would breed a different kind of belief then that of a peoples living in the shadow of an "ancient" wonder.

Weird Gods that seem fucked up and overly specific.

I can imagine a country's patriotic heroes being worshipped or at least their stories used as lessons and anecdotes for future generations. George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan. Probably people who appeared on money since their faces are everywhere.
>>
Has civilization returned? I imagine that right after the cataclysmic event humanity would be mostly existing in a tribal state. As such each tribe would have their own idiosyncratic beliefs that would eventually meld over time into something new and potentially unified.Anybody care to take a stab at what would make such a people religious? guess it could be different for different groups, some naturally superstitious others maybe promoted by someone in power to stay in power.

I feel like a post apocalyptic event would, paradoxically, reinvigorate the races of man after a generation or so. Think of the Greeks and the "innocence' in their art brought upon by the lack of a peoples in their eyes to compare themselves to. To those cults and tribes that do not cling/ have any substantial knowledge of the past it would be the dawn of a new age, a new horizon for man. I think you would see many more virile violent cults pop up, like Immortan joes warboys without civilization to dull mans savagery and knowledge to destroy his innocence, he would be much more active.

Pessimistic cults or those that "turn away" from life would be out of the norm for those not living in the shadow of history. Which could create an interesting dichotomy between the more technologically advanced, but "softer" urbanite (history inspired) city dwellers and the ones living out side of the old worlds shadow.

Remember that just because some shun technology and history does not mean they are stupid.

Meteorite showers are viewed as portents of evil, since the resemble the legendary Commiets of destruction used by the Red devil...

I have it on good authority that there are a bunch of survivors up North that worship this old cube made out of weapons of every shape and size. They also say it dates back before the end and was found intact in a collapsed building somewhere.

Everyone who's tried to find this strange relic has been chased off by heavily-armed bandits in mismatched clothing, or have simply disappeared.

Now ya'll may not believe me, no one never does. But I seen the men you speak of... and their god what resides in that there cube.

Now I ain't never went lookin for no trouble but trouble is what i found that day. Rainin it was, hard rainin. Kinda downpour makes a man think it aint the clouds but god takin a piss right on ya. So anywho I trudged on and on through the pissin rain when I spied a house up on a hill, sillowetted by the lightning. As I trudged up I seen a light inside and got low, can't be to careful. Soes I belly crawled, feelin more and more like I was makin a big mistake. Normally that'd be enough to turn me right around and high tail it out. But that light called me on so I crawled right up to the front stoop and crept up to the window. Inside I saw the cube. Covered in guns, made of um I say. All laid out like you could take yer pick o the litter. Then I seen um, clad in hodge podge gear from all over, pre war with some city miles on it. Each one of up standin around had on gas masks. One walked up with an old beat up 47 in his arms, cradled like a baby. He kneels and holds it out, head bowed as the otheres cycled their actions and started chantin. Now tween the masks the piss porin rain and my own heart poundin I couldn't hear the words but i could FEEL um, feel um in my bones. Then... somethin just reached outa that cube, a hand made o spent shells, old bolts and knives gripped that rifle and pulled it into the cube. That's when I heard it, that click, draw then raspin hiss of a mask right behind me. I turned slow, cursin meself for baggin my rifle to keep the rain outa it steada fixin my bayonet. He was just Standin there, wearin the same as the others and holdin an old mossin just like mine. He looked me up and down and held out a box o ammo for her, more than I'd seen since the bombs. I took um and ran. When i looked back it was all just gone, like it never was at all.

If you want to study what a post-apocalyptic society might look like, research Late Bronze Age Collapse and post-Roman Empire Britain. The people were in wonder at how "the ancients" built wonders like stone temples or amphitheaters. People were reduced to a subsistence economy.

Look at Somalia in the 1990's or Zimbabwe in the 1980's.
