Primordial humans.

Setting is a standard medieval fantasy close to steampunk minus humans. Humans are psionic, advanced technology beings who seeded the planet with life for colonization, but the machines that do this screwed up and modified the precursor elves/orc/dwarves/everything else into what they are now. Should adventures digging through ancient human outposts awaken a human, they'd have to contend with a literal demigod who wants to contact the greater human empire to rediscover the planet, purge it of sentient life, and harvest it.

A lich demi-god so powerful a god tossed its phylactery into geosynchronous orbit. It's got enough magic clout that it affects the weather, causing violent thunderstorms that cause the recently deceased to get up and walk away.

They very rarely actually bother to attack the living, instead making off on an undead pilgrimage in the direction of the Lich's ancient, abandoned city. They've been doing this for literally thousands of years.

Kevin Barbo
>If Chris Chan found the seat of god.
A mortal who squirmed into the cosmic manifold. Granting him subtle omnipotence over the physical world. However at the time of his entrance another managed to follow him. In the dark, tight spaces of hyperspace this other beat the would-be-god to bloody barely breathing pulp.

Due to the nature of time in the manifold Barbo will likely never fully bleed out. However he is so weakened that his abilities, even from his great seat of power are minimal. He can project dreams and omens, create coincidences and grant minor miracles and push complex systems in his desired direction. However he cannot see the physical realm, he can hear and touch all of us but no sight and little understanding.

A small cult has formed around him. At the moment they are dedicated to kidnapping surgeons and cramming them into the cosmic manifold to care for their poor broken god.

Galaborum

A mountain -sized skeletal giant that played both sides of tge Dawn War between gods and primordials for his own profit. He eventually rose to minor godhood himself, but he has only one power. Any time he makes a deal, and the exchange is a fair shake, he can fulfill it.

"Glass of water? Two coppers." He then magically creates a glass of water for you.

"You want property? I'll take that magical sword."

More abstract items have more abstract costs.

"Want your ex-wife dead? The price for death is life. Bring me the blood of an innocent child."

"Want to remember the path out off the labyrinth? I'll take a precious memory of your youth."

He can complete ANY deal as long as the cost is paid.

"Want Orcus to never again set foot on the material plane? Give me a soul trapped in a forgotten age."

"Want Asmodeus overthrown? Steal the dying cause of a beloved Martyr."

"You want to overthrow the entire pantheon and usurp them as the one, true Overgod? There is only one thing worth so much. Find me the last breath of the last, dying star in a cold universe."

Apollyon and the seven mortal Deaths.

Apollyon is a dead god that was brought back as a weapon to kill the other gods.

The seven mortal Deaths were the seven mortals who created Apollyon from the corpse of a dead god.

Eventually, only one god remained (the trickster god) and he convinced Apollyon to help him kill his creators. Once the seven mortals were killed however, the god trapped Apollyon in the center of the earth and turned the seven mortals into representations of the seven most common ways that mortals die in this setting.

There are seven seals that keep Apollyon at bay and whenever one is broken, one of the seven mortal Deaths is released.

The primordial god of chaos. His children (the pantheon that currently rules over the setting) made a secret pact with the golden titan (the first titan created by the Progenitor Gods, and "brother" to the god of chaos) to spare creation from the god's cruelty; they fought him into submission, then bound him in a titanic sarcophagus made of astracite (basically titan bones melted and made into an obsidian like stone), tied with magical chains with each link inlaid with powerful, divine runes of imprisonment, then buried the sarcophagus right below the Devil's (Asmodeus) throne deep in Tartarus (Hell); the gods would allow devils and demons to try and seduce mortals as long as Asmodeus kept an eye over the sarcophagus.
>>
The Anathema.

Ancient beings from a primordial age that were born as prototypes for the creator god before they were sealed away in their own pocket dimension as they proved too chaotic and damaging to the universe for the creator god to use. The designs were improved upon, and the beasts that roam the world today are descendants of these improved designs.

Recently, a narcissistic woman heading a laboratory to study these beasts in a distant island chain became obsessed with studying the Anethema after an accidental rift tore her husband from her, dedicating herself to her work even at the spurning of her own children.

Her children rebelled, one stealing away another beast with a key to this pocket realm, hiding from her mother with an aspiring champion looking to conquer the trials of this island chain.

Long story short, crazy woman hired a gang of punks to try and kidnap her back and got herself min controlled and poisoned by one, resulting in a release of the Anathema to the island chain. Now there's a fear of them coming en masse, striking back at the Creator's own realm in revenge.

A technological cataclysm which blew away the outer layers of the Sun has also introduced a new form of energy but weakened reality significantly in several places. Beyond the veil of reality lies a cold dying universe populated by massive spacefaring creatures who have swarmed to the maelstroms, drawn in by warmth just beyond their reach. Whether they are intelligent in the same way as humans, what they want outside of food is unknown, they project tiny more human-like representatives of their will into reality in an attempt to persuade humans who they may meet to finish the experiment their long-dead ancestors started and open a stable bridge through which They might worm their way into reality.

They may not be malevolent, and their Proxies may even be friendly and helpful to human beings, but in the end everything a Proxy does is to sate it's true self's hunger.

You got it.

It's an OC region that is deeply religious and considers Arceus as the true Creator God and the legendaries as its Children, and the rest as descendants one way or another.

Of course, in a region that is influenced by both Arabia and the Roman Empire, you've got two schools of thought in religious devotion between those who believe in acting as one between human and Pokemon will unlock near demigod-like potential combined in a true bonding of mind and soul, and those who are WAY more intimate with Pokemon that would result in the same thing, if hedonistic at times.

Good thread, anons. I've got 3.

>The contingency plan
The ancient civilisation that once ruled the plane broke apart in civil war hundreds of years ago. Each had their own 'contingency' AI, one that broke all their laws of warfare, 'just in case.' They were never used, but all had master overrides to all the ancient tech and a general directive of "do as much harm as possible to anything that isn't us." Hacking enemy drones, sure, but the real harm would (ideally) be crap like sabotaging civilian pacemakers & iron lungs.

>The Lich
The creature that actually drove the ancient civilisation & species extinct before they could use #1. He's so old he's completely senile now, but he's personally trained virtually every necromancer on the continent. He could theoretically sabotage them all at any moment, but his memory is so bad he can't tell his current students apart from the ones he had pre-war.

>The tourists
These guys aren't really a problem, at least not yet. There's just thousands of tiny 'town in a bottle' artifacts full of extraplanar pioneers ready to make a new life in a world that isn't dying.

Those guys aren't actually that bad, they just want space to farm. It's more that there's the potential for a massive extermination war if first-contact isn't handled politely enough.

The setting’s magocracy has managed (at great expense) to bind eldritch horrors from the outer void into giant obsidian towers. It’s basically their Samson Option. If the neighbouring kingdoms ever decide to invade them they’ll break the seals and let the world burn. The mages will be eaten first so it’s not something that can be used offensively.

Also, for anyone interested in using him, his primary means of interaction with the party and the world as a whole are through his coins. They are made of reddish, heavy Iron and bear his skeletal visage on one side and his enigmatic domain, Galaborumashk, on the other. Galaborumashk is known as the Silent City, where the only noise is the clinking of jewels and coinage. Normal portals to it are few and far between, and it resides in a lost corner of the universe. Presently, Galaborum is the only inhabitant of the city. This is in spite of the fact the city itself could house Millions, it is instead home only to mountains of ostentatious wealth. This is where Galaborum keeps the things he asks for in his trades; Souls of heroes, lakes of innocent blood and of course mountains of treasure are to be found wherever one looks for them.

Crushing a coin takes some strain but could be done with one's bare hand. When the coin is crushed, it shimmers as a powder and blows away in the wind. Then, the one who held the coin is approached by a 9-foot tall bejeweled skeleton with alien physiology, though eerily similar to human anatomy it just isn't quite right to look at. This is an avatar of Galaborum. He says nothing and will stand in place until adressed, and asked for something. He will then state his price. If the character accepts the deal, they shake on it and Galaborum then leaves, magically disappearing around corners and through doorways that shouldn't have exits.

These coins have little actual value and most normal humanoids wouldn't know what they are, but Hags, Dragons, Devils and other creatures who value such deals are often possessed of them in their hoards or on their person.

Most importantly; EVERYTHING has a price to Galaborum. He will give only exactly what he is asked for and nothing more. He assumes the party or characters will give him exactly what he asks for and nothing less.

Have fun.
>>
>>56576663
You say that everything has a price to him. Are there some things that are worth more than he could possibly get, and that he therefore won't name any price for? For example, you mentioned that he might say that overthrowing an entire pantheon would have only one possible price (the breath of a dying star) so would that plus something else, like killing Galaborum and ensuring that that the PC will never be overthrown himself and also gaining true omnipotence not be worth anything? Essentially, would Galaborum eventually identify some requests as too high, or will he always state something, however impossible to attain, as a fair price? Like, would he ask for the dying breaths of TWO universe's last stars?

He does have to consent to the trade as well, hence the handshake. So if he doesn't want to he can tell you to piss off, usually with something derisive like "It's worth more than you could afford."

The only things he would refuse to make a deal on are things which directly affect he, himself and his. If you're asking for something that leaves him and his wealth alone, he'll give it to you. Usually.

Though generally speaking, in an abstract sense, even the things he refuses to give (Which are rare) have a price. Sometimes that price is going to the Silent City and shoving a sword through his bony head.

Found the picture that inspired him, by the way. This is him sitting atop the Throne of Avarice, while the human hero Lydia Mayiace bargains with him the price of her kingdom's safety, fun moment from my last campaign.

She managed to talk him down from his former asking price (The lives and legacies of her fellow heroes) by threatening him with the party Warlock's patron, who is another of Galaborum's dead race that is an abstract of Annihilation. She threatened to have the warlock summon his patron via Galaborum's own lost technologies to remove all of his wealth, as well as his very essence, from reality. The bluff worked and Galaborum conceded protection for the kingdom, but now Lydia is "In his debt", a title that nobody in the history of history has ever had, and a title that holds precarious events in her future for our next campaign...

Rilig-Watathuin
(The Hunched Eons)

A piece of it really, kept trapped and bound to the material realm. It is a far spawn of quite a massive proportion Its being is trapped under a green spire like object in the center of an island.

It was put there very long ago by the help of a more benevolent Far spawn(if they can even be considered that) and the gods. He was placed in the center of an island that has elemental based plans circling it.

1/4th rugged rocky mountains and vallies
1/4th rough cutting sea
1/4th Heavily winded plains chances of running into a tornado or hurricane is about 90%
1/4th lava lakes and generally large volcanoes

The spire itself is surrounded by a membrane like fluid from the pure corruption the abomination leaks into the world. He has a rather large cult following that do everything they can to touch the spire usually by braving the hyper windy plains to get to it. Mortal creatures that touch the membrane mutate and these are seen as boons to the cult. They represent his will in other lands

The Island itself is guarded heavily by a group of dwarfs known as The Brass Fist Collective. the stories of whats actually under the spire have been lost to time but the dwarfs are the only ones who think its necessary to guard it. every other race forsaken it long ago.

I might as well share my own while I'm at it. it isn't fantasy at all, it's just literally dark energy.

My plan for my next session is to have the first section be a typical Forgotten Realms campaign. The party's mission literally doesn't matter: whether they decide to kill a dracolitch or defend a kingdom or kill one of the gods, they'll unavoidably here stories about the huge sky pillars that exist in far away places. Once they travel far enough, they'll find one, and then another, and then another. At each of the pillars, which will be about as wide as central park in NYC, will be VERY difficult puzzles. I plan for the puzzles at each pillar to take at least a full four hour long session to complete, and will result in the party gaining some sort of key-like device.

Eventually, the party will come across a larger "master pillar" as wide as a mountain. If they have enough keys, which they might not if they didn't go to enough in-game areas and complete enough side quests that they'll think are main quests, then they'll be able to complete more puzzles and open um the pillar, which is a huge fucking elevator.

It turns out that the Forgotten Realms are just the lowest level of a planet which has had several massive layers placed one on top of the other, by an ancient high-tech civilization that built it to house an incredibly large population with great efficiency. Unfortunately, the layers got sealed away from each other one by one starting on the inside, and the adventuring party will be inclined to discover the truth behind their reality. They'll progress through other levels of different worlds with progressively higher tech levels (since technology's influence has faded on levels that have had more time to forget crafts and be re-influenced by magic).
>>
>>56578503
The party will journey through a steampunk/biopunk world, a world full of supernaturally afflicted urban sprawl, a futuristic world, so on and so forth (going into epic levels) until they eventually exit the final shell and view the universe for what it truly is: cold and about to die. There is only one true star left in the universe: a red dwarf barely massive enough to sustain fusion at all. The remains of an incredibly advanced but energy starved society of the various races will exist, harvesting the white dwarfs, brown dwarfs, gas giants, and other stellar/planetary bodies of resources while wizards and scientists search desperately for a way, either through magic or science, to reverse entropy and dark energy and save the universe from the Big Freeze. Currently, there are several ideas that seem promising but, while the star will live a very long time, it won't live forever and once it dies there will basically be no hope left. The party will have to save the universe.

Currently, the only idea I've been able to come with for how they can do it is to have them conquer various factions of the advanced society in order to own enough white dwarfs and ice giants to use their enormous diamond cores to cast a wish capable of reversing entropy, but I'm open for other ideas as well as I want the main idea of the whole session to be that the party is not at all railroaded.

Also, I should mention that in the outermost level, magic is forbidden unless heavily regulated and directed toward research on entropy because it's very energy inefficient.

TLDR; party moves up through increasingly more advanced worlds until they learn that in order to save the universe that have to somehow overcome entropy.

Gosh, I'm at a loss as well. I've typed up like 4 different ideas but they're all really lame and cliche'd cosmic horror.

Perhaps the best use of this creature would be in a place like the Far Realm or the Abyss, where such monsters are commonplace and lurk ever present, hungering for the mortal souls foolish enough to enter their domain.
>>
>>56570631
The world itself. The world was a chimera crafted by beings of living metal out of worldhearts (elementals of planets), who sutured the worldhearts together with the fabric of space. This lead to distortions that pulled the various races (some of which are standard fantasy fare like elves, fae, beastfolk and the like; others more alien and sci-fi inspired) onto the corpse-world of the chimera, with cities built around the holes they emerged from and societies spreading and conflicting on the world that leeched life from their own.

Fell down one of the trillions of unstable shafts which litter the cosmic manifold. The manifold is pitch black and external lights only do a little good, it's tight and gravity is inconsistent so it's hard to tell which ways one can fall from. The two made it only a short way in with the slayer on Barbo's tail the whole time. He did his work and left Barbo for dead. On his way out he slipped, slid down a wrong path and got stuck in a narrow part.
He was crushed by the universe, not necessarily dead but not alive in any meaningful way. The remaining functions of his broken body and mind effect the flow of distant galaxies but none of it is conscious or purposeful.

More people would become gods if living in the manifold was easy. Barbo has mostly survived by luck and an instinct not to move around to much.

The slayer himself is no great loss. He wasn't a goodhearted or wise man. He saved us by way of viciousness and an ignorance to the nature of the manifold. He never would have taken the risk if he knew his fate and if he had survived he would have been just as bad as Barbo.

The Crying woman

There is a bowl shaped lake that is said to connect to a series of tunnels that lead deeper underground. No one has been able to really explore it in depth because of the myriad spirits of humans and animals that inhabit the lake and will attack anything that dives down a certain depth. The surrounding area is horribly still and the waters are generally empty and barely any waves or ripples appear on the surface. The only exception is a waterfall that connects this body of water to the rest of the continents river system and sometimes when the moon is full a hunched over figure can be seen crying. It's faint and you will always have to strain your ears to hear it but it's there and people seem to agree it's some kind of woman who is crying but no one knows who she is or why and have made up their own reasons from her being a striken goddess to a woman who's lost her child and her grief has literally transformed the lake and surrounding forest.

Regardless of "why" she is there her presence and it's affects are very well know. several miles of forest nears the lake is where the bodies of people can be found who have come to commit suicide. It seems that the woman's own anguish can touch that of others and people have made pilgrimages to the location simply to die by various means.

Such is the regularity of this that many religious types have built churches and shrines along the path, some to aid the travelers on their way and others in vain attempts to convince them not to.

I like that idea. I've considered something similar. There are timeless, horrific beasts - but they're not much more than bigger, nastier monsters. The gods and their priests make them out to be nightmarish, soul-wrenching, "think in its direction and you're an empty husk" type things, which keeps the general population trusting them and worshiping them. This would all be because these beasts were like that in the distant past, before humanity was even born, and the gods managed to keep them suppressed to these easier-to-manage, bestial forms. The line dividing the setting between Monster Hunter and Bloodborne is the prayers and sacrifices of the people.

An ancient curse contained within a giant translucent crystal. The crystal itself can be used to empower it's wielder immensely but at the cost of their soul and memories. Eventually the wielder either dies or becomes a Demon made of black smoke and ink. All three great eras were started by this crystal and all three fell because of the crystal's curse.

The goddess what dared to imagine the concept of interbreeding with mortals, basically nailed to a chair. Problem is the rest of the gods more or less died from a waning faith in them among mortals and a lack of "proof" of them, but she's just fine because undeniable proof exists in her demigod offspring (or at least what's left of them/remains). So if she ever is freed, she'd effectively be the only god around with none to oppose her.

Which may not be the most terrible thing since she's not evil, but it would mean the world changing to fit her point of view. Probably not be content till all mortals are descended from/related to her

Like, an entity that was "sealed", but is still physically there in a reflection of the world. And only lightning shows what is behind the veil set by ancient mages and gods. It's a greater being that would devour them, and as of now it's only behind a glass window. A bit like a wild animal in a zoo, that is still looking for a way around its barrier.
Except this one will find it eventually

There are a lot, but they're in a kind of truce that led to the existence of humans, since these horrors ooze the stuff of magic.
The truce says, if one of the beings of the sea crosses the land, they will fight again. It would be truly apocalyptic even before said creature would have finished breaking the truce.
>>
>Primordial Entities
In the beginning of existence, there was only the thought of existing, before it burst when nothing became everything. The thought turned into many different kinds of thoughts, each "pure" thought becoming incredibly powerful and had a way of influencing the universe around them. Some of these thought-beings would become gods if their thought was something advanced like "forge" or "life", but those with more simplistic thoughts like "Observe" or "Anger" were more monstrous and unrefined. The advanced thought-beings purged their cousins in the first conflict, but some of the stronger or wily ones would escape into the void and darker corners of the universe.
One of these primordial beings that has appeared in my campaign is "Hunger"- a planet sized amalgamation of mouths and oily, acidic flesh that speaks through the "Choir"- the synchronised screams of the countless absorbed within itself, specially chosen to add to the choir as this being does not devour things in a pure physical sense, but instead consumes via removal from existence, including from any possible timelines.

Shards of R'luh, the being who cultists (and secretly bard college Silberhauer) invoke. To mortal eyes all beings born of him are 2 dimensional shadowy creatures.

Ancients, children of Ph'fhalma, beings who cocooned themselves in ice and are hibernating beyond earths surface, waiting for the rise of the red sea to ascent into great ones.

Archdruids, kings of old, who still uphold their pact to Fey by training sacrifices (the core player grp) to keep up the eversong, so that the red sea will never rise.

The Great Old one, Timeless itself, sleeping within (or perhaps as) the Evertree, at the center of the world, seen to all corners of the mortal realm. Trees resin is actually blood of the Great Old One, abominations his anti-bodies.

Mortals were made by the ancients from the blood of the Timeless, and its the reason for the scourge of mutations that ravage the lands. Within all mortals sleep the beast, waiting to be awoken by will or by overuse of said resin (or by consuming flesh and blood).

Any thoughts? My first campaing, trying to make it coherent, interesting and something that would give some serious Fridge moments to my players.
>>
>>56581323
Oh yeah and all of these are major spoilers. Right now my group knows only that the Ancients did do some tests on the mortals.
One party member is one of the few druids left, secretly guided by an awoken Archdruid towards challenges, until he is strong enough to be sacrificed. His vision of druidism is radically different from the ways if old. He only seeks to uphold balance in a stereotypical way, thinking this to be the "way of balance" of druidism, when really it's all about the upkeep of sacrifices.

And to a lesser extent, life.

I've been more toying with the idea that the cosmic horrors are the gods, with the good parts shown in traditional fantasy sense but with an eerie eldritch side lurking behind it. So it wouldn't really fit or the list would be too long.

The "True Demons". Humans refer to anything they don't understand (like the fae) as "demons". But the True Demons are what the gods referred to as such.

They come from another planet, that orbits the other cosmic spheres, yet remains invisible due for all but one night a millenium due to its convoluted and arcane orbit.

It's left ambiguous what They really are. A species, incoporeal spirits, or a natural force like radiation that's been misinterpreted by humans as living beings.

The moon was once a lush paradise. But the lunarians once called upon the True Demons during a desperate crisis. The Lunarians were transformed into horrific demonspawn by the mere presence of the True Demons, and would have devoured the earth had the settings equivalent of archangel Michael (a holy blue dragon, serving the solar systems absent gods) incinerated the entire moon (along with itself) to stop their advance.

Some Lunarians were only partially tainted by the demonic presence, and hid deep underground to escape the destruction of their world. They became the ancestors of the modern Fae. The creations of True Demons tend to resemble insects in some way. Powerful Fae tend to have butterfly wings and lanky features.

>>
>>56580813
I have something like this in my game. It's trapped somewhere in the infinite space between the mortal world and the afterlife. The veil between worlds is weakest at one specific location where a society of Necromancers have taken up residence.

There's a number of rules as to how Necromancy works, but the monster's influence allows them to temporarily break those rules, though it tends to make the undead in question insane, mindless, more powerful, and incredibly hostile to anyone and everyone without certain control spells in place. It also gives i t a sort of beacon to help the monster find where the mortal world is. Which would basically end existence as we know it. Even worse actually since it also devours the souls of it's victims, denying them any afterlife. For this reason, attempting to gain information on it via magic is also a bad idea since it leaves your soul vulnerable to it. Everyone who's tried died nearly instantly, so people stopped trying to figure out what it was.

Partly related, but the gods of the setting can also be considered sealed eldritch monsters. They're former mortals who ended up in the afterlife while still alive, which is supposed to be impossible. Due to that, they can't die, and were able to absorb the souls there to exponentially increase their power.

Due to this, they can't ever go back to the world of the living. Normally, all that power would kill them since their body can't handle it, they can't die where they currently are. So they have to influence the mortal world by their agents, ie their religion.
>>
The god of death

In aeons past,, the gods walked the earth, and all mortals were in their service. Demons were called from the stars, and many remain bound in ancient workings, in the gods cities far beneath the earth.

The gods have left the mortal earth, passing far beyond the sacred lands, where all consecrated souls go, to be reborn when the gods return.

All that remains of the gods is what they left behind, and, unknown to all, the god of death. Sealed away by his fellows, because he is death. His presence is ending. Everything and everything has a time to die, and he is the embodiment of that cosmic law.

And so, he was sealed away by the rest of the gods, to be freed when the time comes for hem to return. Deep beneath the earth, in an adamant casket bound by nails of moonlight and chains imbued with the heat of the sun, he waits. Aeons pass, and he still waits.

The seal has begun to weaken. In time, he will be free. The time is not right. The gods are not meant to return yet. He would know when they are meant to return, for him to be free- all his locks would be cast off at once,
and he would rise to bring the souls of the world to meet his returning brothers. This is a slow crumbling.
This is wrong.
This isn't what was supposed to happen.
Someone is breaking his prison

Bonus points as not even he knows where the rest of the gods are. Or even if they yet live.

Not necessarily a cosmic horror but:

Sealed away for a thousand years or so is a young dragon trapped in a stasis bubble, the civilization that ensnared him in there are long gone. Should the adventurer (a twelve year old boy) solve all the puzzles and find fragments of an old medallion, he can use it to open a hidden sealed door on the frozen mountainside area to access this creatures chamber. solving one last complex puzzle involving the six prime elements (Fire, Water, Air, Earth, Force and Entropy) will break the stasis.

This leads to a very dangerous fight (considering the child is a survivalist and the most dangerous creature encountered at this point is a brown bear) that involves a lot of dodging and taking openings.

The player gets the option to kill the dragon for its hide (to make a very powerful armor and get a dragon's head as a trophy) or to befriend it (which it can be fed and taken care of, and eventually asked for a ride off the island)

Of course, the player could always choose to not escape the island and instead live with the dragon and the monkey.

Humanity.

This part of the milky way galaxy was supposed to be purged of all life by gamma ray bursts after an extra dimensional incursion. We either were very lucky when the nova bombs went off, or are descended from whatever it was the star gods were trying to kill during the war in heaven.

Either way, the galactic council is kind of afraid of us, seeing as how we've been able to develop industrial civilization without the help of a properly certified elder race. We've been evolving by our own with no help for 4 billion years, and are the first life form to achieve spaceflight without any help in nearly 10 billion years. Whatever we are it can't be safe.

Either way, mass sterilization of entire galactic arms is now considered a bad idea because invasive species can spread through entire solar systems unopposed by any technological civilization. Humanity has been tasked by the galactic council with colonizing the Orion Cygnus arm and outer rim to serve as a buffer zone for when the Andromeda Galaxy merges with us in another 4.5 billion years. Better us than whatever unspeakable alien horrors live in the next galaxy over. They refuse to either change course or file proper galaxy merger paperwork with the type IV meta-organism that administers the Laniakea super-cluster, never a good sign.

The campaign setting I'm running takes place on the four largest moons of a gas giant, three of which were terraformed by a precursor civilization that wiped themselves out in a Third Impact style cataclysm (the tl;dr of it is that their strongest mage was tired of all the war, so he merged everyone's souls into a collective entity, which promptly fucked off to the Great Beyond and never came back).

The north pole of the gas giant has a hexagonal storm, the result of a portal at its center and six nodes generating the wards that keep the portal shut. Inside the portal is a member of the precursor race who was too stubborn to die and was imprisoned for his various crimes -- which included messing with the World Seed crystals on the three terraformed moons, resulting in the creation of most monsters the inhabitants of those worlds know today.

That dude's the main villain of the campaign. He's been extending his influence across the planes to influence people with weak wills and evil in their hearts, and has more or less seized control of an empire on one of the moons, driving them to capture the World Seed crystals to repurpose them and break the seals on his prison.

In an entirely different campaign setting, I had a vast mountain range near the equator, and had an NPC describe the strange curtains of light and wispy figures that appear at the highest peak as "The old gods returning to look upon their creation and dance and sing." The peak was much too high for their airship to reach.

Once upon a time, there was a boy with a devout girlfriend. She loved God, and God loved her. One day the local evil cult captured and tortured her to death. Boy went insane with rage and made a deal with God, who was also pissed.

Boy goes on a rampage that puts the Holocaust to shame. God seals him up before he can hurt any innocents, because Boy is still pissed as hell.

Lore goes that the Girl's soul is still being mended by God, and until her spirit is healed, the Antidevil will never calm down. He obeys God for now out of respect, but if the world gets too evil, he'll rip it apart.

Oh, and children can sometimes summon a shade of him. Do it frivolously, and you'll have nightmares for years. Do it when you're abused/hunted, and your attacker gets dragged screaming off to hell.

Wrong One.
The setting is inside of a simulation, on an ark made to survive the heat death of the universe, the dying of the final star. The space age has come and gone and nothing is left.

The players are unaware they are bodiless consciousnesses preserved within this last monument, this last proof of our existence. The ark is sustained by a power source that breaks thermodynamics and produces infinite renewable power - but it came too late and too little to save organic life.

The One knows. He went insane and believes the admin AI is keeping everybody captive, and there's a world out there. He's made it his mission to destroy the simulation - and unbeknownst to him, the last sputtering spark of life in the universe. He has become an eldritch thing over time as he's subsumed the consciousnesses of his followers and become a force to rival the admin.

The admin AI is under strict laws that prevent it from interfering in the simulation, for fear that this very thing would happen. These laws simultaneously prevent it from directly intervening against The One, and it is reset to factory default every time it tries. It's been forced to try and find loopholes in its programming to perform its task and has been subtly guiding the party towards fighting The One's influence 'in-character' using the simulation's 'plot'.

I don't really think about "cosmic horrors" for my world, as they aren't really necessary. Like the lich in adventure time, there's plenty of homegrown stuff that's scary as hell already. Anything with an evil alignment and 18+ Int is existentially scary enough for me, especially if it's long-lived and/or been around for a long time. Give it tons of personal power via magic and bam, who needs cosmic horrors?

In a game I'm running for my wife, the BBEG is an elf lich witch who creates slendermen and intends to summon/bind zalgo from the space between worlds and fuse with the tree of life to become a god. My setting has no gods in the way D&D means the word.

The Hopeful Star, also called the Mercy Light or the Last Light in Darkness.

The star crashed on earth an age ago, during the primordial war. No present tales remember exactly why. Was it caused the large amount of magic being thrown around at the time? A weapon? A failed summoning? An accident?

The Hopeful Star is a sphere with a radius of 30 cm that shines bright and far with an energetic white glow. People all around the world are drawn to it, dreaming strange dreams, calling for justice, for light, for the renewal of hope against despair. Its followers can summon its name to banish demons or help them in their darkest hours, and they change in return, becoming something much more.

But the Hopeful Star shouldn't be. It is universally hated and feared by all civilized races. All souls are instinctively revolted by the corruption it brings to reality, the sweet light of hope that gnaws at the tapestry of the world, its blind prophets that loses their souls even as they transcend, its cleansing purity. The Hopeful Star is a blight on the surface of the world, and someday, it will wake up.

The Leviathan that sleeps within the world. Gods being celestial, immaterial beings couldn't shape the world or create it perfect, so they created the Leviathan which was chaos embodied in material form, then put it to sleep. Trough the manipulation of the Leviathan's dreams they shaped the land, as what he dreamed became so in materium. Because of this the beast is kept dormant for most of the time as it can dream things the gods didn't control completely and shape the land that way. But if the creature was ever to wake materium would stop existing or following any of the established rules because they are just how the Leviathan *thinks* reality works in his dreams. There are heroes who travel the planes in search of books and items of power which would allow it a mind link with the Leviathan so they can stir it to dreaming again, so they can shape the world as they please, but every such traveler also risks waking the beast.

We'll it's not really "feeding" it, it basically a sacrifice to keep the creature in a slumber. The old gods of the world placated the giga-dragon and placed a seal on it that needed blood to keep it going, the locals have kept it going ever since.

They decided to hit the hard reset button on earth and jump forward in time a few million years to when the planet would be inhabitable in order to continue the war. Both races double crossed eachother during the deal and have left ways for their race to be awakened first, hidden for some new intelligent life to find

The SoS threads had a series of "fechts" (Quests) in which we'd all control a character as the lead developer put him through an adventure that revealed the lore of the game.

In one such adventure /tg/ played Centurion Cammilus Furius, a Ruvian soldier who led a cohort into the far east to destroy some sort of temple. It wasn't until the final moments of the campaign that we realized we were the bad guy. We ended up killing a character from a previous Fecht (Paladin Sulla) and slaughtering an entire building full of multi-national warrior monks presumably dedicated to protecting the vault at its center.

Then we opened the vault. Bad things happened.

Anger.

An ancient god locked away its firey rage deep with the earth and used it as a crucible to create the first people before it died. Although the god died its rage simmered and smoldered, straining against its dirt prison.

Every now and then a great pyre erupts from the ground and swallows a settlement. No traces remain of the communities. But left in their stead are creatures composed of ash and embers, hacking and coughing as they ravage the countryside in a blind fury.

There's the pieces of a tarrasque, hacked up and packed in about 50-100 bags of holding and other items. This is what happens when Gods don't die properly. They become husks and hide between, always seeking some means to become more than just husks. To some, it means gathering worshippers that pray only during the twilight hours. To others it means empowering mortals with its unholy bones and flesh to kill the Gods and bring their hearts to it. And yet so many more simply wander, mad and lost, ever seeking but unable to remember what they were seeking.

The earth itself exists to hide away something. Only maddened insomniacs and the fever dreams of sanguine artists dare hint at our world's true nature: the core itself is a gestating being, fertilized by cosmic spoor aeons before even the first life.
It will not hatch until our kind is long dead and forgotten, but it stirrs in its fetal sleep. Earthquakes, sinking continents and mass suicides alike occur when the earth-fetus kicks its developing proto-limbs.
It is said that, long ago, an ancient holy man of the Far East cloistered himself away far beneath the earth in primordial caves. There accounts claim he meditated and followed strange visions until he found the nectar of eternal life: the Earth-Yolk. Pilgrims of that eastern faith still seek out the Monk of Deep Caverns in hopes of achieving eternal life as he did, although the last account to speak of him was written before the Fall of Rome and described the Monk as anything but human...

Qliphoth, an aspect of the primordial chaos of pre-existence. As its influence grows, three things happen: days grow shorter and light is harder to create; the weather grows more and more afflicted with impossible magics (leading to shit like snowstorms in summer whose snowflakes explode into spiders, etc.); and a disease spreads all around its prison, causing those afflicted to grow slowly weaker and more crystalline until they finally "die", losing their mind and becoming a monster of crystal blades that can expel a blast of noxious sludge that kills magical light and infects the living with the same disease that claimed them.

The PCs have been fighting a cult seeking to awaken it for the whole campaign, and accidentally created the recurring head priestess of the game. She was a widow just trying to get on with her life in her tiny little town, until the PCs came through on their chase to stop one of the above mentioned crystal-monsters. They assumed that her daughter was some kind of demon for using enchantment spells on the sheriff of the town and killed her. Now she's got no purpose in life except to take it from other people, the way it was taken from her twice. With the power of the outer darkness at her command and a cult of nihilistic and downtrodden people to carry out her orders, she's consistently caused enormous problems for the party.

Modern day setting.

When Satan/Lucifer got cast out of Heaven, he was locked away in Sheol, deep in the bowels of the Earth. He sulked and brooded for a long time, with his fellow rebels, but eventually, he realised he'd fucked up. Satan repents, decides to ask God for forgiveness, to let him come home. Problem is, either even omniscient God can't hear him down in the dark depths (since the idea of Sheol is literally being cast away from God), or God just doesn't want him back. Satan tries to reach out to the world, testing his prison for the first time in forever, and to his surprise, Earth's frigging covered in humans, who've built and murdered and blasphemed a hell of a lot more than he ever did, but they aren't being punished. Worse still, it seems that a large number of them blame him for their evil doings. As far as Lucifer's concerned, this shit ain't right. Eventually, the fallen angels will be able to manipulate humans into letting them loose, but it's still very difficult when you can only reach them through half-remembered dreams and fading premonitions.

I find it a bit of a cop out that the solution lies with magic, seeing how as magic was already established as too inefficient to help anything.
>>
The Contingency.

The world is actually an ancient petri dish of genetic experiments, super weapons, data vaults containing dangerous information, and terraforming devices. After a galaxy wide calamity, the experiments rebuilt a primitive feudal society, not realizing their place in the universe. Dwarves are built for high gravity worlds, giants build for large scale construction on newly settled world, lizardmen built to live in unforgiving atmospheres, and humans built to survive already living worlds, to resist bacterial and viral infection. Being a storage facility the world itself has a bomb built into it's mantle, ready to be set off and destroy everything as a last resort.

A mad cult who worships the setting's christ figure thinks it will cleanse the world of sin. Luckily scientists are monitoring the primitives, ready to swoop in and save a few people if the device gets activated.

In the back of people's heads which scratches and gnaws is the domain of Fick. For Fick exists beyond the edges of consciousness where to know is to be known and to be forgotten is to cease. In the innumerable eons Fick has continued to know yet Fick has also forgotten and in doing so has Fick forgotten entire worlds from existence yet it matters not. For Fick will only ever continue to know what worlds continue to know Fick.

But as is ordained, to know and to be known goes beyond just reading the cryptic writings of a madman on crudely crafted parchment or catching the faintest whispers of the winds time itself had forgotten or finding one's visage traversing the vastness of the mind only to catch the slightest glimpse of infinity. To know Fick is to acknowledge the evershifting consciousness of eternity - the metaphysical beyond the metaphysical - where in knowing does one truly understand the manifestation of everything.

Yet your very being will never stop yearning for it because in knowing Fick does one get known by Fick.

To be known is to not be not known.
To be not known is to be forgotten.
To be forgotten is to cease.
And to cease is to become one less consciousness keeping the world from being known by Fick.
And once Fick forgets Fick will never remember.

They call it the Grand Disregard and in any world only a handful of the conscious will ever truly know Fick. These are the handful which keeps these worlds from being forgotten - the upper eccentric echelons of utter lunacy.

For Fick will only ever continue to know what worlds continue to know Fick.

Literally the entire earth is composed of the fallen flesh of dead gods. It doesn't generally seem too different from regular earth, but it still holds traces of divine potential in it.

The stars are the souls of those dead gods, lodged in the firmament after their deaths. Sometimes the stars fall, and then bad shit happens. As the godsoul comes near to the dead godsflesh, it begins to reunite. Even meteor that never lands is enough to raise massive outbreaks of monsters springing from the earth as the godsflesh begins to reanimate in haphazard, messed-up ways. If a meteorite strikes home, the godsoul fuses with a goodly chunk of godsflesh and reanimates as a twisted zombie god. Even if they were whole and sane, these gods would be bad fucking news, because last time they were alive all they knew was a bigass free-for-all war among the gods for dominance of the cosmos, and all they want to do is continue fighting that war. Slap a good layer of "came back wrong" over that, and you've got some serious trouble on your hands.

Not exactly sealed entities, but they are the big dogs of the setting.

It's a pretty low-magic setting, so this guy is both wondrous and terrifying to encounter. An ancient nature spirit is said to roam around the land while avoiding civilization. This being is a wellspring of natural magic the likes of which causes the surrounding environment to shift and change as the being continues along its path without a care in the world. It's said that those who approach it gain an understanding of some of nature's secrets, but they fundamentally change because of it. Their newfound knowledge may change their perception of life and the world as a whole. Some who approach it do not come away at all as they are morphed just as the environment around it is. If this being were to die, magic would very likely die out and the laws of nature may be affected. He's sort of a lynchpin in the world that very few are aware of.

There's a more sciency type of being who, in his search for the path to the world's root, has created many magical artifacts and tools that take eldritch knowledge to fully understand the forms and functions of. He doesn't possess much innate power, but these artifacts can range from simple map-like devices to portals to the rift outside of time. A pair of failed projects that he cast aside are actually currently forming a World Axis that prevents certain phenomena from occurring and actually slows the decay of the world (which he is ultimately unconcerned with). Multiple factions are vying for control of this and other artifacts that he carelessly leaves lying around.

The players are involved in this conflict as well as one involving the hunting of a rare beast that is actually a person that had encountered the first being. The game has basically been a big faction-based treasure hunt that has been indirectly fueled by the actions of these two. I'm thinking of adding a third big mover into the mix, but I'm not sure where to go with it.

Anyone have any "horrors" that are really ordered and "good" beings or civilizations of powerful entities and super tech that would normally be considered a utopian or salvation force in any other setting, but is considered a horror just because they would view the current inhabitants of the universe as corrupt and inferior (which they are) and would destroy and replace them out of principle to ensure the universe itself would become more efficient and civilized?

I've always loved the idea of using the phenomenon of player characters for a bit of in-universe horror. The Elder Scrolls does this a bit, both for existential and cosmic mystery through things like the Unchained Prisoner archetype and the whole unbound fate concept, as well as for more immediate Westworld-esque horror with Pelinal. I was recently replaying the Ghostbusters game and noticed that the player character can never be possessed. Thinking about it, I realized that it's because he's already possessed by the player.

In the ages past there was the god Rashavu. He was chief of a pantheon, the spirits of the hills, a great blue man with a beard a mile long who wove enchantment into the land itself. Then, one day, a meteor crashed in the north, and the thing in the crater was not of this realm. It ate people and land and concepts, unburdened by logic or causality. Knowing only divine intervention could save the world, the gods gathered to destroy it. Through their efforts the thing was repelled and destroyed, but as it died it released a giant crawling insectoid beast that tore across the sky and plunged into the chest of Rashavu.
In the mortal realm, the symmetrical backlash rose up as a cult of worshipers for this golden beast of the heavens. They infiltrated and wiped out the churches and temples of Rashavu wherever they found them. Worship of Rashavu, already hermetic and esoteric, was wiped out and supplanted within a generation by the cultists of the insect: Virathel.
Virathel is now a god, a maker of pacts and weaver of webs, with all the same interests and powers as his host. Virathel was opposed by the other spirits of the hills, most of all Sozor the Dawnlord. With the help of his mightiest and most martial paladin and the soul of an orcish folk hero, Sozor cast Virathel into the pit of Hell itself, casting chains of adamantium and piercing them through the beast's golden carapace.
>>
>>56615205
Here's the thing about Hell, though. It was built by the 13 Demon Lords to suit a purpose, to gather the souls of the damned to the Inferno and add that power to their own. This function continues no matter what, it's structural to the very realm of Hell. As a result, Hell must continue to expand downward over time, the damned souls chipping and clawing away at the ground and drawing Pandemonium, the capital of Hell, ever deeper. This is how Hell is meant to work.
Unfortunately, the mad dead god was dragged to the bottom of Hell, crushing the palace of Pandemonium, and chained in place to conceptual stakes. The 13 Demon Lords are immortal and their Thrones indestructible, but the thrashings of Virathel were so violent and his destruction of Pandemonium so complete they had to relocate to Dis, the city at the top of Hell.
Now, Virathel is chained at the bottom of the Inferno, constantly barraged by the souls of the damned, drinking them as a man might potentially drink from a waterfall. As his cult grows in power and spreads in influence, so too does his exoskeleton grow more grandiose. A new palace of Pandemonium has grown, golden chitin spreading to fill the space at the bottom of Hell with winged walls and bony towers. And this is all a problem, because Virathel knows the laws and structures of Hell, and he does not dig.
Hell is a finite space with infinite potential, a mineshaft as tall as the sky that could go as deep as thought and fear. The damned keep dying, and their souls keep being drawn to the Inferno. As time goes on, more people will be born, will be damned, and will die and be drawn to the Inferno. And there simply isn't room within Hell at its present size for all the souls that will ever be damned. Virathel knows this, and knows it's his best bet at getting out of Hell, because someday all Hell will break loose. Someday, there will be no more room in Hell and the dead will walk the earth.

Nobody knows it exists yet. Arguably, it doesn't exist yet at all.

The setting had an apocalypse about 200 years ago. Time broke, gods died, the dead walked the earth, whole nine yards. After the apocalypse calmed down, one of the effects was the Afterlife vanishing. As a result, the souls of the dead are trapped in the world.

Fast forward to now. The Afterlife has reappeared, so the dead remain restful. However, there's a weird side-effect that's not widely understood yet. The key to making War-Forged work is considered a trade secret by those who make them, yet the truth is they don't know how it works. It seems that if you make a sufficiently complex system, something like a soul is bound to emerge. The natives shun War-Forged, believing they're powered by the souls of the dead. These two beliefs are essentially correct, but nobody's yet put it together properly.

Unrelated, on the other side of the world, the dwarves of Eisentraum want to make a railroad that will cover the earth. Intercontinental rail travel will give them a monopoly on trade and war, and they've put a lot of effort into creating the opportunities necessary to build it. But the actual building and managing of such a network may be too much for even the most diligent of dwarven thinkers, so those thinkers are instead building a machine that will do the thinking for them. Superstitious workers in the east believe that the dwarves of Eisentraum buy steel and brass and coal in such quantities because they're feeding a monster in the heart of their empire. Again, both beliefs are correct.

The sealed cosmic horror is whatever soul will come to inhabit a difference engine the size of a literal mountain. Even gods died in the apocalypse, died in a war against something no mortal knows or understands. The world still exists, so it must have been vanquished, but is it truly gone, or merely seeking a new way to enter the world?

The White Hot Death, Incandescent Horror, Lord of Malevolent Light, The Smote God; It rules a vast empty mountain range deep within the labyrinth of unending hells, collecting the souls destroyed by the holy wrath of the celestial gods of law, order, justice, and all that is good. No demons serve It but to sate the unquenchable lightning at Its core and act as an etheric guide to those doomed, damned souls sent into Its eternal grasp by the forking cascades of energy from the Holy Above. Occasionally a strong and willful soul will evade Its pull and land somewhere in the great span of desolate mountains only to be hunted down as the plummeting tongues of holy white fire draw ever nearer, heralding the arrival of The Smote God.

Some 200-odd years before the start of the current campaign, an evil god attempted a direct invasion of the world. He was ultimately defeated and sealed by a group of legendary heroes, with the assistance of the other gods, and now lies trapped at the bottom of the ocean off the coast of a particular country, frozen in stone, only his right hand breaking the surface of the water to reach skyward. The world was saved, but in order to keep the boundary in place, the remaining gods had to become more distant, less direct, as any act of divine intervention would weaken the power that holds their enemy in place.

Absolutely none of this is relevant to the current story my players are going through, it's just a tidbit explaining a certain bit of geography they're encountering (the stone hand breaking out of the sea), and why the relatively small country where this happened has managed to maintain its independence from the encroaching empire (they don't wanna deal with that junk if that dude ever wakes up).

>the Blood Child, born from a union between a vampire and an eldritch entity (inspired by Bloodborne) - currently sealed in a Silent Hill-like prison town

>the Mechane, a computer-based robotic entity created by humanity looking to build their own protecting entity from the outside powers (inspired by a lyric from the song "Sound of Silence" about a neon god) - most of its power is restricted to the digital dimension

>the Void Star, a being that sits at the centre of the galaxy, sending messages out to all intelligent life (inspired by the Beast from Doctor Who) - looking for a way to escape the gravity prison it's in

>the Golden Heart, a being that has been splintered into many entities - currently sealed away in the body of an enormous immortal that lives under the surface of Mars (inspired by the Emperor from 40k)

I have one, yes, for a setting I seriously plan to use someday. It's called the evil that always was, or the malevolence, or multiple translations of these 2 titles. A long, long, long time ago, before the grey planes had coalesced (that's the setting by the way), it inhabited the garden of suns, cultivating, destroying, helping or abandoning entire races and civilizations according to its designs. It is not know why the malevolence did that, but the ancients of records never describe it as crazy. It is know that it had the power to extinguish suns with a mere touch, and that its very body was a form of time, space and existence.

It was sealed during these primordial eons, by a distraction that took entire civilizations to oversee and machinery the size of a pinhead working in tandem with constructs bigger than the largest of stars. The very power of the malevolence traped it inside a collapsing region of space, where the trap was sprung and the evil was sealed inside one great sphere.

Due to the chaos and power of that entity, its prision became 5 separate spheres, some as small as a room, some as big as a city, the other in-between. These spheres are sources of incredible power, insight, and energies beyond what any plane or civilization can generate on their own. Only once has one of these spheres be broken, it was a small leak then and it led to the worst cathastrophe that has occurred since a long, long time ago. (Incidentally, that's why humans are the dominant species in the setting)

Due to the inmense span of time, and the ability of those spheres to get lost, many have attempted to harness their power to their own end, and the results are not catastrophic either. But the malevolence is, and by spreading their powers the grey planes come one minute closer to its liberation, in whatever form it takes.

All of them. The gods sealed the barriers between realities for this express purpose around 4,000 years ago. This had the unfortunate side-effect of cutting everyone off from the gods as well though and so organized religion died out. It's now mostly a personal thing and many, many different conceptions of the gods exists.

I run 3.PF and to represent this divine magic classes have pretty much free reign over what domains and alignment they can play. They can't change them but otherwise mechanically its' unchanged. I run the game as part of a TTRPG club at my uni and I encourage the more experienced players to come up with their own deities if they want to add some flavour to the character

I had the idea for Virathel and the effect he has on hell first, and then thought about who he would be replacing, and the words "The Thirteen Demon Lords" popped into my head and I just wrote them in ink into my notes. Obviously they would all have to represent different aspects of evil, right? So I wrote that in ink as well.

Then I had to come up with 13 things to be a demon lord of and I hated myself for jumping the gun. Still, great title.

This symbol occasionally appears in rare mystical works along with the mention of an artifact marked with it. Little is known about it, save that it has great power. Some suggest it grants a great and terrible power, others think it may be demonic in origin, or the sign of a forgotten god. Either way the artifact has been sough after for millennia and become somewhat of a legend. Some think it no more than a myth or scholars elaborate joke.

>it actually exists hidden deep beneath the earth. The universe is essentially a video game run by an overmind, imagine dwarf fortress on an epic scale. Touching the button causes the simulation to end. The button was put in by the programmers as a prank.

Less "sealed" and more under construction.
Setting has advanced to a point where cannons and blackpowder firearms are fairly common but elves are stubbornly sticking to magical weaponry and golems. They currently have a golem under construction that once completed will have the power to not only completely eradicate entire cities but to unmake them from reality resulting in people forgetting what was even destroyed, with the only evidence of something having been destroyed being the smoking crater. It does this by absorbing literally ever facet of what it destroys, down to the metaphysical concept of its existence, which powers it up even further with no upper limit. If allowed to continue destroying shit it's going to eventually develop sentience and go full genocide on the material universe so it can become the universe and start over. This has already happened multiple times before, the elves didn't invent it so much as they remembered it through dreams which are the vague memories of the last golem floating through the time and space which was created by its thoughts Other planes are unaffected, although with no belief gods fade from existence, so fey and elementals are vaguely aware of previous cycles and some places in other planes have ruins that predate the current cycle.

A great demon of strife is chained hand and foot to the pillars that hold up creation. Sometimes it thrashes against it's restraints and causes earthquakes and it's whispers leak out from cracks in the deep places of the world to twist the minds of mortals.

Basically, it turned all the dwarves into huge cunts.

The walkers of the northern corpse desert.

In the sky of the northernmost mountain a tear through the kingdom of heaven has formed, allowing abominations from beyond that realm to flow in along with their natural habitat, covering the northernmost continent of the world in an eternal thunderstorm.
A great and never-ending battle rages between these cosmic horrors in the dark clouds above, and when they die their bodies decompose and drift in a million tiny pieces to the earth below, blanketing that dark place in a desert of dead matter.

Few creatures of the outer-realms actually touch the earth itself, however the few that do are the carrion of that horrid place, leaving the sanctuary of the sky to feast on the flesh-dust of long dead monsters.

The great walkers of this land are such beasts, their emaciated forms searching for the freshest and largest quantities of their foul food-stuff.
When they find a suitable feast, they kneel down and consume it by cupping their hands and raising vast mounds of the dust to their face, imbibing it as a man would water.
However, these creatures are fiercely territorial, and will go to great lengths to drive off even the smallest threat from its food source.

Be careful to not attract ones gaze when travelling through that sordid realm, as death is all you will find behind their ghastly eyes...

The rotting carcass of the Life-Giving All-Mother, whose body was supposed to become the Moon, has instead sunk to the bottom of the Ocean. Failing to comprehend her own death, her corpse has been continually ejecting Eldritch Abominations into the water. Some of these are picked up by pirate-monks and adopted into a big pantheon of gods they've gotten from her. Others travel free through the waters, becoming sea-monsters of incredible infamy. MOST of them remain with their Mother, waiting to enact her plan to plunge the world beneath the waves and reunite herself with all of her children by force.

I mean, at this point? None of them. The players broke the seal and let all the Old Gods back in. Most are just benign, or belligerent, maybe a few are actively malicious.

The big ones, the guys who built reality, however, are pretty out there. That's mostly because they want more than anything to undo their own creation, since they only realised after the fact that the rules of physicality they built shackled them just as much as everything else. They became intrinsically mortal. They don't like that at all, and meticulously work to return everything to the Sea of Potential that it once was.

When Fey realized what the Ancients were trying to do, Fey Queen Ya'enh decided to stop them. Soon she sacrificed herself to create the eversong, gifting the world an escape from the red sea, the (as they saw it) apocalypse. It also created the day to push away beasts and to keep count how long there was until Eversong needed more fuel: sacrifices. (In a way day is just a illusion, a metaphysical state of an individual. One with enough Eldritch Knowledge can see beyond it; problem that rises is that around that person day disappears and beasts can roam free.)

After the ancients went to hibernate mortals were lost, with no way to defend themselves from the night and the beasts they surely would have perished if not for Enu'enh, a True Fey, who binded them to the eversong, and through it: to the Dream. Now they hold the gift of will, faith and sleep, with which they can shape the Wake (basically this is explanation for spells, most npc and player made gods, and levels). In exchange mortals promised (some would say they were extorted) to uphold the Eversong for eternity with their sacrifices.

A sweet deal for the Fey, who cannot breed. Only the gone Feyqueen Ya'enh could create True Fey, while the latter could only create servants (though mortals see no differences, except in strength, between the two).

Mortalkind created the druidic circles around Fey worship, Archdruids were the first kings of races.

As time went on, races bred and spread like crazy and Fey kept dying. In time Fey turned from concrete gods into old legends.
After some time races started to have their first conflicts, leading to the era of great schism. Mankind had gained most control which led to speciesm. Soon races separated: Sachi (snakefolk) and Salamanders moved to south-east, Merfolk to the western sea and Dendrim (molemen) burrowed underground. During this time Fey left to live in the heart of Evergreens of east: Green grove and after thousands of years were forgotten.

The Eversong is being sang within the Evertree itself. Entrance which is found deep within it's roots that lead to a small room, with small pool. Beneath its waters are stairs to an underwater gateway. One that dives deep enough soon emerges from beneath an infinitely long frozen lake, lit by unnatural lighting and filled with the chorus of Ya'enh. All the past sacrifices are seen, each turned to stone. In the distance a great, unnerving, statue like figure is seen. Angelic to some, demonic to others; some say it is Ya'enh, keeping up the hymn, others say it is the Great Old One himself... Whatever it is, no mortal can gaze at it and remain sane.

Great Old One on the other hand is pretty generic, azatoth like entity. Cocooned within the planet, just a child that sleeps within his shell, and as he does he dreams up the world.
The wake, the dream and the beyond are just different layers of his dream. He is the center of all and hold together the dream and the wake. Those who think they can hold their sanity may invoke him to gain near omnipotence, at least in theory for none have survived.

Oh and tge world holds more than just magic: the Eldritch Tongue is actually language of the world. A kind of computer code language if you will. It is incredibly hard to comprehend and to pronounce but, again in theory, one could shape the world in any way with it. This is why wizards never share their true names and why wizard masters do not take students before they learn their full names (as an insurance).

We started with dnd 5e homebrew, but resently switched to Lamentations of the flame princess. With sanity mechanics of course.

A millennia ago there was an empire whose populace betrayed the realm of the flesh. It was their pursuit for perfection which led them to the blasphemous union of soul and steel. For over a century they held reign over all the pitiful sacks of bone and fat until one fateful event that would completely wipe out their existence from the world. There were no records or accounts of the disappearance, it was all too surreal. So the rest of world simply forgot about their mechanical overlords.

Little did they know that the empire's foothold on their psyche would extend far into the future. A thousand years is a long time, the world's population had taken the route of immense magical superiority. The arcane has been tapped long and hard -- a deep trauma caused by the empire which led the world to go off tangent in its advancements.

Beyond that, what little influence the dead empire had on the lands were desolate areas deemed uninhabitable by the denizens of the realm. For whatever reason any being of flesh who would step foot in these seemingly normal places felt a distinct feeling of stomach twisting discomfort as they would have their very souls be choked by cold inhuman bonds. It was as if a switch was turned on where they succumbed to the thoughts of submission and eternal servitude to whatever unknown being lorded over them.

Traveling the world is an otherworldly contraption, catching a glimpse of it would send any meatbag into a convulsing fit of vomit and screams. Rusty in its thought and calculated in its actions, it had one and only one directive: to rebuild the Machine.

Messiah of the one true religion.
Envoy of the one true ideal.

The last bastard son of the techno demon.

Panic sets in as I cannot find the list. It must have been lost in a reformat, and that was the only place I had it written down. Well, I'll write down what I remember:

The 13 are immortal, but their immortality can be removed by severing their connection to their Throne. The process that does this also coheres you to the Throne, making you the new lord of it.
* There was Yaohura, Master of Murder. Pit Fiend.
* Zar Dagada, Drawer of Fates. Red Dragon.
* Naila bint Zaig al Hakem, Patron of Debauchery, an Efreeti
* The Princess of Pain, Tiefling, she was a woman without a name.
* Nefoxin, Champion of Corruption. Started as a human.
* Deserius, Invoker of Carnage, Balor.
* Volorous, Render of Minds, Solar (specifically, he was the chief angel of Rashavu and followed him down into Hell to keep watch over him, lost his mind, and took over the throne of Madness)
* Ritter, Architect of Fear, Doppelganger. It was 2009, it seemed like a clever reference to make back then.
* Father of Disease, elf vampire, don't remember his name.
* Sower of Deceit, she was a succubus, can't remember her name.
* Lord of Tyranny, he was some kind of half-fiend deposed king from the mortal plane.
* Greed was a gnome, he was the inspiration for the setting's version of Rumpelstiltskin, but I can't remember his name or title.
* Discord was the last one, and I can't find anything in my notes about who or what that Lord was.

Lying, cheating, raping, stealing, killing, sneezing, cutting in line, peer pressure, all the bad things people do to each other.

What's the "Drawer of Fates" supposed to be? The other titles are pretty self-explanatory but I'm having a hard time figuring out what sort of dickery he's supposed to specialize is.
>>
>>56626641
Every pantheon needs a fate god, and apparently the strands of fate are pretty easy to weave when you've got divine ranks. In practice, for mortal purposes, he's the Lord of Scheming. You light a candle and pray to Zar Dagada for help in manipulating people into doing what you want. They all had domains and stuff, they were basically minor gods, but all that was lost in the reformat.

The idea was basically to take the sudden popularity of railroads in the 1800s and apply a fantasy filter to it. When the colossus is completed, it will help run the trains all around the world, meaning that they will have created a giant metal squid covering the entire landmass.

Humans and gnomes.

All other races and species, from dwarves to elves to bugbears to most of the gods to bacteria, are descendants of exceedingly ancient elves. Said ancient elves enacted a ritual that tore all divine power from all the gods and localized it in a single fist-sized orb. Unfortunately, they couldn't maintain the orb for longer than a few seconds, and it exploded. This caused widespread mutations among the elves, leading to the races we have today. The elven equivalent of the KGB will hunt you down if you learn of this fact.

Humans are planar travelers, stranded in this world. They've been here so long, most have forgotten that they're not actually native to this plane. The first humans that arrived we're actually from modern-day earth.

Gnomes are similar, except they are the only remnants of another realm that was corrupted by a cancerous, malevolent entity that inhabited the flesh of its victims. The trauma of the war against this entity was so great that all gnomes are born completely lucid, with memories of their home world burned into their minds. They collectively refuse to speak of their origins to non-gnomes, have a propensity for cybernetic augmentation, and nearly all of them participate in a machine cult.

There's a special material in my setting that comes in three variations; white, red, and gray. Anyone carrying equipment made of it openly is subject to extreme hostility from gnomes. This material is actually the bones, blood, and brains of the entity they fled.

I have really powerful demons sealed away in the roots of the world trees.

Otherwise, there are extra-dimensional parasites that cling to dimensional walls and suck existence-stuff out of it to sustain themselves. They aren't banished there, they just live in the void and sometimes grab at things going through interdimensional portals. However, if one gets into the dimension.... They are four-dimensional beings that then suddenly exist within a three-dimensional space. It gets to lovecraftian tier insanity levels because people go mad looking at them.

There's an evil god buried under an ocean somewhere after this random elf found a spaceship and used all the magic in it to punch the god hard in the face and break him.

There's also elizabeth bathory, who is a demigod (was a goddess first, before getting kicked out by the other deities). She was only sealed away by some dudes who had an antimagic field, and they stuck her in a torture guillotine in there. Then the party got rid of the anti magic field. Well done guys.

There's also various ancient devils trapped here and there by various people.

There *was* a blood god trapped in an artefact, but then an elf-orc got real mad and broke it and turned into the first vampire after aeons of psychological abuse from everyone.

The Thing in the Cage, The Drowned King, The Second Sun, King In the West, King of Dreams.

A creature that fell from the sky thousands of years before man first crawled out of the ocean. It did pitched battle with the demon lords that ruled over the world at the time, slaying many of them and rendering much of the world uninhabitable through it's strange terrraforming magics.
Eventually it was brought low, and its crippled body was captured in an impossible prison and kept at the bottom of the deepest trench of the ocean, guarded by one of the last living Demon Lords, Deephand.

Today, it's magic has begun to leak out, and it seeks to manipulate mankind to help it gain freedom, seeking out the wealthy and powerful. It bends their will for them to use their influence to bring him worship, typically through sacrifice, bizarre art crafted in his image, and the destruction of civilizations through abuse of their power. The Thing in the Cage is responsible for more collapsed societies than any war, natural disaster or other worldly disasters. His influence is notable in a civilization he has come to notice when the sun refuses to set, or a second sun appears locked in the sky eternally.

A necromancer failed a ritual to become a lich, and was turned into a pseudo-god in the form of a constellation. These constellations are worshipped by the tribal orcs of the setting. He has a kingdom in his region of the sky filled with all sorts of necromatic monsters, and the lost city underground where he performed the failed ritual has also been tainted by the unholy arcane backlash, which corrupted the natural vermin and residents of the underground.
