Granted, the Metroid timeline doesn't use the Gregorian calendar. All the dates are given along the lines of "year 20X5 of galactic history", who who knows at what point their calendar starts (my headcanon is that year 1 of galactic history is the founding of the Galactic Federation, but as far as I know there's no canon answer).

Elon Musk is very good at hyping things to death, but very bad with actual facts and science.

A plane has a one in 11 million crash chance. A rocket, even the best of the best we can build today, is closer to one in 100.

Putting aside the enormous cost and the numerous technical difficulties to make the venture profitable, a rocket is still orders or magnitude more dangerous than a plane, and Musk has a sketchy record of not actually exploding his rockets.

It's like the Hyperloop. He surfs on the hype and doesn't particularly care that it is scientifically impossible or so difficult it won't be done before a good century. People like him: he promises the future, but forgets that the future he is talking about is on the order of centuries. And people give him money and fame, and that's everything that count.

Pfft like everyone doesn't know this.

The man wants a Mars colony and needs side projects to make it happen. A pipe dream of Rockets replacing Airliners will help investors take an interest in SpaceX.

>People like him: he promises the future, but forgets that the future he is talking about is on the order of centuries
People like you said that human organs would be scrambled if they ever went over 25 miles an hour. A century ago people were still dubious about powered Flight at all. Let alone getting anywhere in the world within the hour.

Anon its going to be a decade at least before we even trust our automated vehicles to drive without a person in them, despite the person inside being all but useless in case of an accident. There isn't a single way in hell that some lonely wageslave won't have to watch the workerbots do their job while he does virtually nothing, and is paid to reflect his actual contribution (basically nothing).
>>
>>56616192
People exactly like that have been the reason for all kinds of explosions of new inventions, technology, and ideas. You need people who act like he does, talk like he does, hype up the future and hype up the impossible, just to rise up and find out what even is possible. It's a flawed person, a flawed worldview, but I like that kind of direction and I like that kind of character. People love to hate that kind of person too but none of that matters.

He can sell us the dream of a hyperloop but in the process bring more high speed trains and better rail development. I don't care if someone who promises mars fails if in the process brings us the moon, when without them we wouldn't have had even that as soon or as easily.

You need to dream up the future that's centuries if it's going to happen in even that kind of time frame.

To the heart, killing is killing, even imagined killing: killing someone live without it ever passing into your heart's knowledge is better. The ease of killing and your ease with replacing someone with another don't negate the fact that your image makes me feel like I've witnessed a person with worlds and a personality all their own die in a work of fiction well styled after reality, despite that they, even in that fiction, were fictional. Androids should stay the retarded uncanny valley things they are now, and people should not pursue them looking and sounding human until people can be even hoped to treat them as human, just for the sake of preserving any semblance of moral goodness of those living people.

I understand your argument, and believe that it is merciful and kind. Even so, is it not the doing of something that brings understanding of it? Little by little, individuals and societies alike gather more experiential data that allows them to understand the nature of reality better. Would not holding back on the creation of sapient AI equally hold back culturally maturing in our treatment of the subject? A person never fully understands the feeling of being a parent before they have a child.

Do we not grow with what we create?

There is a "future timeline" on the the internet someway listed when most things are set.

I can't be bothered to find it but on the whole, most Space opera take seems place in the mid 22nd century. Yes even stuff written in 60s. You get the old stuff that was meant to take in 10 years time or 10,000 but "near 200 years mark" seems to be most popular for cities on the mood and the like.

It might be an age of sail thing. The 1700s was the age of discovery and exploration so the 2100s probably seems like an appropriate time for most writers.

Sometimes you win.

Sometimes you have your identity overwritten and replaced with a facsimile that only bears a cursory resemblance to your original self. Reaching an uncanny valley of personality in which you cease to exist as a nuanced person with goals, ideals and desires and more as an emotional mask hiding the hollow meaninglessness of your rigidly defined existence.

Would it shock you that I've considered writing horror VN's sometime?

Think of it like this: a lot of stories about robot girls are them being cold and emotionless at the start but then gradually become more and more emotional until they learn to love and become fully human.

Now imagine that... but in reverse...

I would agree with your view, if I didn't know so many people who should not have been parents because they lacked the proper sense required for the task of taking that feeling of being a parent and turn it into actual behavior, and who didn't grow to fill the role. How to prevent that for our future, I'd have to say is that they get to a state of emotional stability and soundness those people lack. Also when one knows he isn't financially prepared for a Child, abstaining from having one until he is does not prevent him from having one later or lesson the feeling of being a parent, in fact it helps him to digest the joys and burden better, his mind less worried.

What's more some future whole of society isn't more important than it's current parts. It's men today who are thinking these things up and determining how they will be treated and who will suffer for it: men would be wise to learn from their mistakes but the they would be wiser not to make them in the first place. In the metaphor of a parent from a different angle, we cannot wait until the child is born to prepare for it as best we can, we must do that now. Tomorrow will be too late.
