I'm gonna be a Wizard in a fantasy world inspired by Samurai Champloo. Any of you guys have ideas for Magical incantations that rhyme like Rap?
Big dick swinging fireball chuckin' motha fucka you know it's trueSteppin niggas toasted ain't even got a clueTen thousand degrees hot as the sun out of the blueGettin' hot in here? Nah nigga it's just you>fwooosh
>>59220808Yay, skipped straight from weeb to wigger
>>59220808*smacks lips profusely* WICKETY WACKITY, SNIPPTY SNAPPITY, HERE'S MY MAGIC PIZZARATTY
>>59220934Its cool when they mixhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OuRajFzMYIAlso imagine a wizard duel that basicaly consist in a reality altering rap battle.
>>59221034An attempt was made.
>>59221053Thing is, it's easier to do things like that in audio-visual medium, rather than in something that's mostly verbal like roleplaying games. It can work, but it's not guaranteed.
>>59222279I dunno, I can see it working if you make the right tone or plot for the campaign. Like a big fantasy city setting, but you focus on the poor zones, the wars between gangs, guilds and such.
>>59223077KSBD has this vibe
>>59221709Thanks anon, I can try to write some more later today if I have time
>>59220808Make sure to emphasize Power Words. The ability for a sick rhyme wizard to be able to throw in a word that causes physical and magical effects mid-flow is some heavy shit.As for tone and shit, you know what you should look at. The Warriors. Do The Warriors, but with rap and fantasy.
>>59223077So, Gangs of New York, but with more modern dungeon-punk sensibilities?Ran a PF campaign that started in Kaer Maga kinda like that, but then it went into SPAAAAAAACE.
>>59223617I will try to keep the thread alive.Anybody has pics that fit this "urban hiphop fantasy" aestethic?
>>59220808Here's two quick spell incantations.>Put the wind in your heels and a pep in your step>Kick the fire to your heart and put it straight to your rep>You gotta get getting, cause there's no time to waste>Since you only got a minute left, I just cast HASTE.>Escape is impossible, dodging? No obstacle.>Cause with a point of my finger your survival's straight farcical>1d4 magic orbs cut through the air with a whistle>So get ready to die to my MAGIC MISSILE. I-i'll see myself out.
Bump, because holy fuck I like this.
>>59223077Maybe have a functional "Rep" mechanic? Some kind of mechanical measure of your standing and the power you command within the city? Make your whole adventure reliant on how it interacts with other higher-rep organizations in your bid for power.
>>59220808I know you're pressed up against the wallRollin' your tongueHavin' some fun, keepin' it looseBut I need to know, I got no time to sleuthso by the power of Helm, I command ya'llSpeak the TRUTH
>>59220808While we are on the topic, I recently played a spelljammer oneshot as a hip-hop cleric.I have the gaudy Tupac necklace I wear to some games as a joke/good luck charm, and so I brought it to this new game. I came with a friend and told her that it would be my holy symbol, and I only revealed it halfway through the oneshot. In the end me and another friend described our characters as wearing bandannas and we flipped of some cops before flying away (at a lower altitude because we're low-riders) and blaring hip-hop as we went into the sunset.
>>59225875Statting up a young arcane caster elf right now.
>>59226936>>59222279The world that we are playing works like this:>SettingCapital of an empire, city is divided among many distrincts, and the lowest ring is the poorest district, most players started there. It has kind of a japanese feel, mixed with renaiscense. There are guns, but they are rare, but usualy if you are a top fighter you will be able to cut bullets in the air. >CastingOn the setting all magic is done with rhymes, the oldest and most sophisticated characters have a more "haiku" style casting. Meanwhile, my characters is part of the lower class that use the more modern "rap" style casting.Usualy the better your rhymes, or the fastest you can rhyme, the more powerful is the spell (we were not going to really do the rapping while playing, but fuck it, I made the thread to get some ideas and actualy do it).So basicaly, the best "arcane rappers" are basicaly celebrity. They engage in "magic duels" that are basicaly rap battles. It comes in 2 variations, a non violent one (where you just cast ilusions while you insult your adversary), and a "I will sing thinder and lighting into you". >PlayersYou have my wizard that comes from the lowest circle, trying to make a living with sick rhymesThere is a fighter that tried to make a living by being an honest salaryman, but now wants revenge against one of the gang leaders of the city, and to do so he turned into crime (but tries to not hurt any inocent person)And we have a graffiti ninja, player has yet to do his backstory. He fights with some kind of break dance. There is also a town guard from the highest circles of the city, disguised among the new gang members, to try to hunt down the leader of the organization. The part of the city where we start is basicaly run by organized crime and gangs. The actual leaders of these ilegal organizations live on the highest circles of the city. So far, very much thanks for the rgymes anons.
TO THE WINDOWTO THE WALLEXPLODING FIREBALL
>>59227489This sounds sick as fuck. What system are you guys using?
>>59227833Cypher System, same from Numenera.
>>59228258Alright OP name some spells and I will try to come up with some dope rhymes
>>59227784ALL THESE KOBOLDS CRAWL
>>59228274The system actualy let you have plenty of creativity with how you call or cast your spells. It has things like "Onslaught" that is basicaly "hitting you enemies in their bodies or mind with some kind of energy" - and the player usualy can fluff what kind of energy he wants - or even how to name said attack. So if you want to send him ilusions to cause mental damage, you can, if you want to cast a fireball, you also can. So basiacly, perfect for using creativity.Other magics include basicaly an arcane shield made out of spirits. Magics to increase damage, to create sudden flashes of light and so on...
>>59220808Sheeyyt, you should just have asked/searched for screencaps of DJ Phylactery....which I'd have provided if my PC wasn't on the fritz. Try suptg
>>59228725Oh my, this is AMAZINGBy the lore, the lich would probably talk with a shakesperean accent or something of the sort tho, to reflect his older roots.
>>59229115>Shakesperean accentLike, I know what you mean, but I should point out real quick that Shakespear's English, while looking fancy and reading all rather regally, was spoken quickly more often than not.Shakespear himself was sort of like a modern punk.
>>59220808Champloo didn't have rapping Samurai, it just had Hip Hop music and aesthetic backdropped to a period drama.
>>59229856He said inspired by. Don’t be a pedantic asswipe.
>>59229965Well, firstly, Samurai Champloo was good shit and this is kind of missing the point. Secondly, all these rhymes are shit, like 99% of people who think their shit is fire.
>>59230013Sure thing there, Vanilla Ice.
>>59227489Right, from the sounds of it, the important part of spell-casting is the beat and rhythm, and the speed and precision with which you can deliver it. By building flow, a rhyme makes a spell more powerful.Haiku magic is the oldest and most reliable because it's formulaic and has just three lines, meaning it's quick and easy.Free Styling is difficult and dangerous because the potential backlash of dropping the flow could kill you.
>>59230013>all these rhymes are shit, like 99% of people who think their shit is fire.Well then bitch nigga step up show us how it's done
>>59229856I'm with you on this, my dude. I'm into this idea but you should just court the theme and aesthetic, and play some hip hop beats instead of stock fantasy music during your session, don't do magic rap battles or shit like that. Unless you and the members of your group are actually good at rapping then it's guaranteed to be cringe. And if on the off chance you and your group actually are qualified to run an urban hip hop fantasy RPG that isn't made of cringe, please record it and make a podcast so I can enjoy it.
Listen to me as I enunciate my elucidation of the corruption in this fucked up nation, Towers of Hate built on a plate with nothing kept straight amidst criminal complication. My power is vast it's from the street you fuck with me I bring the heat, now listen up your in for a treat. Sparks fly out of my hand like wrath of god in the span of quickness sit and witness as I electrify and pulverize LIGHTNING BOLT
>>59230188I think peppering in some pre-prepared verse for certain spells every once in a while would be fine, but otherwise yeah.Rap isn't easy.
ITT: A bunch of nerds who don't understand that rap is just one part of the much larger culture of hip-hop. Also thinks rhyming = rap.
>>59230429By all means, enlighten us, oh mystical jigaboo
>>59230577Hip-hop is defined by four major elements: Bboying, DJing, MCing, and Graffiti. Rap is a small subset of one of those elements, and thus a small part of hip-hop culture (MCing). Rap is not necessarily Hip-Hop, but Hip-Hop can include rap.
>>59230385I mean, I think the rule of thumb should be "if you can do it, then do it." If somebody's shit really is fire then they should go ahead, but making it a core part is just a recipe for disaster. No different than bards singing in regular fantasy settings.
>>59230716I’ll just stfu now....
>>59230892I know I'm being pedantic, but that's what makes Samurai Champloo such great representation of Hip-Hop culture, because it includes almost all of those facets, and blends it perfectly with the setting. Unlike Devilman Crybaby that *happens* to feature a rapping character.
I haven't got any more two cents to contribute but I'll post what relevant art I have saved. Not really an easy thing to find shit for.
That's about all I got. Hope maybe that got some wheels turning.
Beat-boxing aside, how do you make hip hop in settings with no electricity?
>>59232108magic, my man. Encourage bards to manipulate sound like they manipulate everything else, and you're all set.
>>59232470Give them a wooden mixing board that they carry around and set on their lap to play like a koto/guzheng.
>>59230716>>59230969Different anonman, but if I am doing a hip-hop wuxia campaign, do martial arts displays count as Bboying?
>>59229115Pretty good, but DJ P should have ended on a stronger note, "sparkly skin" doesn't work great as a last smack.
>>59220808You start trouble for my bandand do it with much sass,I'm gonna cast Bigby's HandJust to slap yo punk ass. When your party can't beat a BasiliskI just flip turn and cast Tenser's Floating Disk. When you're a RangerAnd you're real hardcoreYou gotta face dangerDon't forget your Bear Lore!
>>59234194Absolutely. Not only do the actual moves translate well, but the whole battle aspect, exploring / developing new maneuvers, and wanting to be the best of your set all go hand in hand.
>>59230429Oh yes, that why we are incorporating some other stuff too, like the breakdancing ninja clans.
>>59234523>>59230208>>59227784>>59227112>>59225875>>59221034>>59220872What you all sound like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kppx4bzfAaE

>>59235673If you're point was to insult those posts, it didn't work, because that rap is actually amazing
Swiggity SwootyI'm claiming that booty
>>59237479This raises an important point. If it is a fantasy world with hiphop culture, it NEEDS booty. Maybe some cute black girls too.
>>59220808Go all out with the wizard being a rapper? Most spells have verbal components so when he spits fire he spits fire.
>>59235958My buddy, my friend you must be jokingThis will get ugly, I'll leave you chokingDo you think you're brave, facing me alone?Let's see how you do against Flesh to Stone!
>>59229856Except for those three dudes that rapped while holding wooden beatboxes. And the other one that literally existed just to drop beats. Granted those are the only ones that I can remember actually rapping.
>>59237516This is your bard. I don't even like her music, but damn thede thighs
>>59237833Her music is always strange to me, because I'll find songs I really like buried within albums filled with stuff that's almost listenable but not quite, or beats that are super good but really underutilized. She's got some talent, that's for sure, but it just feels like she's never actually using it well. Anaconda is pretty good though
>>59220808How the FUCK can y'all have this thread w/o Nujabes? (rest in beats) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGfguhnvECc

>>59239139You're the third person to post Nujabes in this thread. It's kind of like posting John Williams in a thread about film scores... like yeah, obviously.
>>59231374Why old japanese stuff combined with nigga stuff is so stylish? What they EVEN have in common to match so well?
>>59230716>Bboying, DJing, MCing, and GraffitiSo we've got Wu-Tang themed Monks, Bards with magic mixing boards, and fire-spitting Wizards to represent the first three aspects. How do you incorporate graffiti?
>>59243106Dark cults of hood niggas tagging walls with eldritch symbols and runes.
>>59243083Black people love Asian shit. While rap artists were selling platinum records to suburban white folks, a whole generation of kids from the hood were growing up on shit like Street Fighter and Dragon Ball Z. And a generation before that, it was kung fu movies. For some reason the two sets of aesthetics just mesh.

>>59244955>Mark Ecko’s Getting UpWhat a strange way to spell "Jet Set Radio."
>>59244952The idea is that we are also going to focus less on "saving the world epic quests", and do more personal things, mostly on the setting of a big fantasy city. The scales are small - "saving my childhood neibhoor for being taken over by crime", "stop the contraband being done by the guilds in secret", "avenging my family" and so on.
>>59244980Fast-travel/teleportation ritual.Suckas never learn.>>59245048Jet Set Radio isn’t hip hop enough, because Getting Up was forced by The Man to have a disclaimer saying “this shit is illegal, do not attempt IRL”. If the Man feels the need to push you down, that’s some real hip hop shut
>>59245089>Jet Set Radio isn’t hip hop enoughSure it is, it's just a different kind. "Hip hop" is a really wide net to cast, which in this context is a good thing.

>>59270520Really, I'd say if you were going to build a setting like this it'd be better off taking from all kinds of musical styles and subcultures. And the nature of hip hop is such that there's not a lot it can't mix with.

>>59280561It seems like it could be fun if implemented well, though maybe it's a bit difficult to do. Sounds like your setting's "rhyme casting" is more focused on the quality of the rhyme, where as the Finnish equivalent in the Kalevala is more about how deep the truths you sing are. There's a famous example of one of these duels where young and boisterous Joukahainen challenges ancient Väinämöinen and gets sung into a swamp. >>59287993>ElvesI assume they have something akin to J Dilla or Dre flow, practiced precise words but few true emotional touch stones>KoboldsDanny Brown shit>DwarvesNas
>>59287993Dwarven style is all about that rock solid beat and flow. Dwarves don't do much flourish, but when they rap its on point and full of lots of lyrics that build upwards on themselves. Dwarven wordplay has a lot of callbacks to previous verses, throwing back references and burns that get more and more elaborate as the verse goes on. They also have lots and lots and LOTS of rap feuds. Dwarven feuds are the stuff of legend, and will cross over generations. The Book of Grudges is real.Elf rap is all about wordplay and flutters about a lot. Elves will syncopate beats and throw in bridges like wildfire, because they're more concerned about the sick alternating slant rhyme scheme they thought up than with having a steady rhythm. Still, elven rap can be some seriously impressive shit when it gets down to it, and the grandmasters of it have had a long, LONG, time to practice their flow.Dragon/Dragonborn rap is fucking bullshit, because they don't have lips and can do some absolutely insane circular breathing to keep on going.
>>59225875I actually like the first few lines a lot. Short rhyming phrases rather than a full on lyrics might be more convenient and less repetitive every time you use a spell
What about graffiti based rune magic. Either for wards, traps or summoning?
Ok, here's an idea, casters would have to rap a bar for each level level their casting (5th level spell = 5 bars, ect), and for counterspell you specifically have to diss. For class flavor I'd probably make a bard/wizard hybrid class for players to use, weather you want to make it harder for casters by making them unable to reuse spell raps is up to you.
Sooo is this the aesthetic we are mainly going for?
>>59289111OP's setting seems to be traditional fantasy mixed with hip hop, like Samurai Champloo but with a stock D&D setting instead of feudal Japan. But it seems like people in this thread are thinking more of a semi-modern urban fantasy theme. I'm picturing basically what you would see in the background in a Street Fighter stage.
>>59288910Graffiti acts as wards, it helps protect your hood. Tagging in someone else's territory encroaches on their magical borders.
>>59220808I'd unashamedly rip lines from EtriganI'd also make him an NPC
The Monkey King musical had some of this vibe.
>>59246678It's treason then
How a Rap God would look like?
>>59297037wears shattered remains of gold chains, showing how his music broke the bonds of the normbears a massive clock pendant that is said to track the absolute perfect beatand sick shades to shield his eyes from when he spits purest fire upon the posers
>>59297037Well, I think one rap god is too few, you need at minimum two, though I will describe three:Rap God of Avarice and Swag:>Buff, really fucking outrageously buff with like bulging trapezium muscles and really svelt delts, wears a black wife better>shaved head, pair of shades, one of those weird beards that outline the jawline into a goatee, but with that classy fade-into-spectacles line cut up by the ear>wears a pair of the freshest kicks known to man, solid gold hightop AF1, and is covered in giant chunky bling. His sunglasses are blinged out to all fuck too, the mere sight of them bitches will blind you>His grill is hooked up to a flamethrower so that he literally spits fire>His rap style are hood anthems like DMX where you don't really need to be good at rap, you just need to say catchy bullshit and look like a rapperRap God of Knowledge and Rhyme:>Tall, skinny, unassuming. Maybe Japanese or white, but either way he's lanky as all fuck, constantly smoking a joint>always wears a hat, extra baggy t-shirts with old 90's style graphic designs on them, khakis, pair of old tims with no laces, tounges hanging out.>carries a rhyme powered samurai sword, known for decapitating entire audiences with a single swing>raps MF Doom/Wu-Tang stream of consciousness style beats with an outrageous assortment of rhymes. Likes gritty old-school samples and talking about philosophical bullshit.Rap God of Future and Flow:>Crazy fucking neon nigga, looking like he walked out of some retrofuturistic concept art for The Fifth Element meets Bladerunner meets a fuckload of acid.>Changes his outfit every fucking occasion, never wears the same thing twice, except for a pair of shades that make him look like robocop>The producer, his raps are more about sound than substance, but this guy drops beats so fat they cause earthquakes>It is said he has a secret beat that can stop time and leave an enemy rapper stunned and cotton mouthed.
>>59297515I would simplify it with a god of Image (representing gold chains and thick asses, for whom talent is irrelevant), Production (skinny white kid who doesn't rap, isn't from the hood, he just sits around making legendary beats) and Rap (encompassing both flow and lyricism).
>>59298568Can the god of image be a thicc girl?
>>59298568>representing gold chains and thick asses, for whom talent is irrelevantShow more respect to Goddess >>59237833
>>59297515>>59298568I could see the the gods of Avarice/Swag, Knowledge/Rhyme, and Future/Flow being potentially saints under the greater god of Rap. Perhaps some kind of choir of sick rap demigods, and a choir of departed OG's to sing them to they rest.
>>59298623I'm thinking more of a 2 Chainz type would be more appropriate, but they'd always be seen or depicted in art with a couple of thicc bitches.
>>59298568I think we’ve well passed the point where being a skinny white guy is no longer synonymous with not living in the hood and being unable to rapMake Production instead the invisible god: only the other gods can claim to have met him, and only a few mortals have been allowed to enter his Studio, but he makes his presence known through the infallible beats he gifts to those in his favor
>>59299582>I think we’ve well passed the point where being a skinny white guy is no longer synonymous with not living in the hoodThat doesn't mean it isn't an appropriate character archetype. That's kind of the point, you don't have to be a thug in 90's LA drinking a forty in a brown paper bag to be hip hop, you just gotta be with it.
>>59299345>When confronted with a great and powerful rapper, the rap gods are known to form together into a "super rap god".
>>59298623Thicc girls should be highly regarded on the setting.
>>59297515>The God of Knowledge and Rhyme hefts his sword, the Grass Cutter (though it is not the legendary blade of the Emperor. no instead it is named for its legendary propensity at cutting hemp and herb to the finest edge.) and walks through the city. I drew a thing, and sleep deprivation combined with listening to Wu Tang made me think it was a good idea.
>>59302080The overly thick handle makes him look like a turbomanlet
>>59302113How line thickness is related to manletness?
>>59302080>this anon drew something I wrote aboutI have nothing but smiles. Thanks senpai!
>>59305137If this thread is still up tomorrow when I can get into work and use the scanner, I'll see if I can get in the other two. They're a damn cool concept.

Can bards exist in this setting? How does their niche change?
>>59312492Going off of stuff from earlier, Bards would be themed around hip hop production- they're DJs and beatmakers. >>59232595 would let them do it on the fly. Since everything has a musical theme already, it would keep them to more of a support role while sticking to the theme.
How exactly would rogues, rangers, druids, and paladins work in this setting?
>>59297037Is english your 200th language?
So Death Grips is just a barbarian right?
>>59314462Eminem is the equivalent of the anime faggot who dumps points in dual wielding and describes his every flurry of attacks
>>59314523Now i want a d&d podcast or show with a bunch of rappers playing dungeon crawls. Who do I have to pay to get it to happen. How do we get DMX to be a dog-wielding ranger?
>>59314523Eminem is rap god
>>59305063the girth of the handle of the sword, not the line thickness of the drawing.
>>59315886>dog wieldingbro he literally believes he IS a dog, he's a druid.
>>59314523That could also just be a dex barbarian
Bump for art
>>59316014Nah, Eminem is the Rap Godwalker and is desperate to ascend, unknowing that the throne currently lies contested between Biggie and 2pac, preventing any of his challenges from going through.
>>59313557In the fantasy + hip hop setting, about the same. But in the urban fantasy setting people have been going after in this thread, I think you'd be best going for a four-class system based on the original four pillars of hip hop, as >>59230716 points out.The Wizard equivalent is the MC. These are your rappers, front men who are the centerpiece of any group thanks to the fact that they spit hot fire. The Fighter/Monk equivalent is the Bboy/Bgirl. These are your breakdancers and also the physical fighters, delivering beat downs with flashy martial arts moves. The Bard equivalent is the DJ. These are your hip hop producers, creative types who turn out killer beats, making them the essential support backbone to any crew. The Rogue equivalent is the Writer. These are graffiti artists, focused on stealth and agility in their quest to tag impossible spots but ready to kick the ass of anyone that messes with their art.
>>59229856It did tho, as well as a beatboxing hypemanhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUpV63YHj34
>>59289267honestly that describes it perfectly
>>59324374I'm assuming you mean the first part but I would totally be interested in a "Street Fighter stage" setting, that shit always seems so cozy.
>>59256231For some reason I always forget about VELOcity, should really try it out one of these days.
>>59325556You and me both anon. It's a really nice and punchy looking system, and I wish I had the time to run it.
>>59297515>>59302080Jesus tapdancing christ, I thought I'd have more time to work on this today but work was a nightmare. I managed to get this detail-less outline in right before closing shift, and his right kick still isn't done. Will be fixing up when I can later.
>>59324757Nah I meant the street fighter bit.
>>59220808use a wand like a microphone
>>59328460In that case, right on.
>blocks your pathWatch where you walkin’, wizard
>>59321964To go with our four-class system, there should be a small amount of stats but lots of customization. Lots of different types of raps, beats, tags and dance moves. Just a quick look shows four subclasses of monkdancer:>toprocker: upper body and hands, including tutting>downrocker: lower-body and moves done purposely making contact with floor>power mover/power head: big flashy acrobatics and gymnastics>freezer: do a move and stop in the middle of a strange position to stop your enemy and open them up to a big hit
>>59332028You might also combine the four class themes to be something else rather than just having a little from each. For example, an MC + B-boy is instead a Hype Man- around for muscle and image, but also capable of adding some vocals at just the right moment in a supporting fashion. Basically a Paladin equivalent.
>>59332345Absolutely. Combine a Writer with any class and you’ve got the rapper who draws his own album art, the bboy who comes up with flashy costumes to style on you in, or the DJ who can basically prepare musical runes
>>59332345MC + DJ = beatboxing wizard
>>59332491Given that I'm assuming the Writer is pretty heavy on Dexterity (or the equivalent), I think mixing them with a DJ should make for somebody who plays a "real" instrument. Be it an old school James Brown type, somebody making live hip hop like The Roots, or a musician from a different genre like a funk bassist or a jazz pianist trying to fit in.
Alternative to "heavy mythrill" or "hail and kill" 'bout mah niggas, swag blingz, phat beats, sick flow and shit?
>>59333584yeap.Now imagine the clash of worlds when the two (three?) settings collide.
>>59333619I mean, there's always the fourth option.. If the characters did their own songs, it would be 100% the best rap setting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dVKMla1LAY
>>59321964Should breakdancing even get a major focus in such a setting, or would martial arts take its place?
As a black guy these threads are always entertaining Party on you crazy assholes
>>59335331Shit, can we have more of this kind of thing? I like this better than most of the garbage on /tg/ now.
>>59334930The answer should be both. Always both.
>>59334930People are competitive by nature. Both can coexist, and borrow from each other, and even spawn a combination of the two. Hello capoiera.>>59335331Are you the hip-hop purist from the beginning of the thread?
>>59340622Not him, but there's more than one or two black people on /tg/, anon.

What would a peak rap wizard sound like? How high is their powerlevel?
>>59348250>magic mic created by his DJ buddy>breakdancing summons>warded by graffiti from his Writer buddy>spits hot fire>can also rap very well>has advantage on saves against choking and freestyle checks>has mastered both jokes and bars, can put together multis like it ain’t nothing
