So totally unrelated to that question, how the hell would you stat some of the bosses from No More Heroes? I've been tooling around with trying to get Margaret Moonlight worked out as a fantasy rehash, but would I just stat her as a particularly finnicky bard?

>>60779581
What the actual fuck.
I love it.
>>
>>60780889
I don't think bard has enough of combat chops to make it work
>>
>>60779581

This thread was so empty. How can we fill out this setting?
>>
>>60780889
No More Heroes is ultimately style over substance. Any system that tries any sort of "realistic" simulation is going to fail, so any sort of stat-me should aim to capture the ridiculousness of the characters.

As for Margaret Moonlight, she's a caster dual wielding staffs she can shoot powerful energy bolts out of, that have scythe-blades attached for melee. Her theme song is just a low level illusion spell she casts before each fight.
>>
>>60780996
If everything is baseball, maybe ninja baseball batmans

So I am actually the guy who posted that thread and am writing the full game for 108 stitches. If anyone has questions feel free to ask.

I will mention one interesting thing. All character’s power level is measured using a formula that produces their ‘Theoretical Yearly Salary’, or TYS.
>>
>>60782851
That would be more Japanese. 108 stitches is based on Tibetan Buddhism. An example of some of the iconic enemies are the 8 guardian deities of Tibetan Buddhism, such as Mahakala, the Great Black One. I actually have done a fair amount of writing on the setting.
>>
>>60782947
>’Theoretical Yearly Salary’
Heh
>>
>>60779581
This is fucking rad
>>
>>60783100
I didn’t realize how much people liked it. If people care I can post about it more often with actual updates and the game PDF when it’s done. Or partial playtest copies.

So, guy who wrote those threads and is creating 108 Stitches here. I can answer questions for the next few minutes now that I have a trip.

If people are interested I can try and start putting out actual releases.
>>
>>60783521
Is combat a baseball analogue, if there is any combat at all?
>>
>>60783636
There isn’t any combat, at least not yet. Fighting is not the intention of the system and and timr you would want to fight it would have to use the same skills you use for baseball. The idea being the six probciples of baseball apply to everything.

Most conflict is resolved on the pitch.
>>
>>60783704
Will I be able to recreate characters like Michael Jordan during his brief, misguided stint as a baseball player or anybody from the Hanshin Tigers?
>>
>>60784063
I’ve actually stated some coaches and baseball players, both real and fictional, to use as guidelines for characters. So yes, but it will be abstracted.
>>
>>60784620
I'm making a Field/Call build and you can't stop me
>>
>>60784860
That would be fine.
>>
>>60785148
By the way, how many players is this intended for?
>>
>>60785185
3-6 would be best, as 108 is divisible by both 3, 6, and their sum, 9.
>>
>>60785185
So this is a bit odd, but he >>60785255 is right.

This OP again back on my actual computer. So I can explain some of the flow of the game:
>the setting is a great city separated into six parts, one for each of the realms of Samsara
>the city has 7 official baseball stadiums, one in each realm and one in the central, and numerous smaller ones
>think the aesthetic overall of techno-Tibet mixed with the busy design of the walled city of Kowloon
>the numerous smaller pitches are where teams practice to try and try and make it to the big league
>everyone wants to make it to the central pitch where you fight the three teams that represent the Three Beasts of Temptation, the Pigs, the Roosters, and the Snakes
>lots of god figures in Tibetan and Chinese Buddhism are in the city in some capacity
>everyone plays baseball

For the actual games:
>all games are played on the pitch
>actual play of back and forth on the pitch is handled in innings and plays out like baseball
>during 'moments of crisis', which should happen a few times per match the party goes into a flashback
>this happens when something like the bases are loaded, or it's the bottom of the ninth, or the opposing pitcher is on a hot streak and you need to turn it around
>players can call for a moment of crisis to occur
>a flashback begins relating to the moment of crisis, and the party plays out the flashback
>depending on the result of the flashback the moment of crisis either resolves as a success or a failure
>>

One of the things I found important for some reason was both before and after games, and during flashbacks, was to drink heavily. I wanted to both have rules for heavy drinking and many bars in the setting for players to choose to get sloshed at. When people looked at the city map the number of small restaurants/bars in the city should be staggering.

>>60791855
That would be playing baseball against the most important figures in the setting where you need to move baseball up a cosmic level of power.

>>
>>60795819
Honestly if I was stuck in the cramped city of baseball and buddhism, I'd be getting fairly smashed myself.

It feels like you've put thought into this, which is very good.
>>
>>60797839
Drinking is governed the six stats, not by one stat, so drinking is sort of a thing every character is good at in a different way.

>>60798809
So the game only has six stats, and works on a "roll and keep" system.

You have a pool of dice you roll, and a number of dice you keep. For instance if it is 3K2 you roll 3 dice and choose 2 of them to add together for your result. However, where your character's specific qualities come through are Boons, Banes, and Specials.

Boons are specific things you are good at, they're narrow and apply small bonuses. This can be something like "Pinch Hitter" where you get a bonus only when then bases are loaded. Banes are the opposite and specific times where you are penalties.

Specials are things you can invoke, think of them as special moves that have specific outcomes you don't have to roll for. Another thing specials do is "meet a certain prerequisite, get a bonus". So if >>60798809 wanted to be a drunken master he would give himself Boons related to having some amount of alcohol, and specials where the triggering thing was alcohol related.

Honestly the original idea and the rules are mostly in a conceptual form. I did not expect this much interest in the idea, and while I have a lot of notes and some writing on the subject it is gonna need a lot of work before it is in a showable form.

This weekend I will be alone for three days and can do a Game Dev Session where I try to get as much down as possible over those three days to have something remotely playable by the end of the weekend.

If I am speaking completely honestly I would love for this game to become a real thing. I have long laundry lists of ideas for games, and this is one of my favorites. If anyone is curious about the others as well I can explain them. They range from more traditional to even more out there than this.
>>
>>60808047
Another thing. I will try to post on the subject more regularly and create an actual thread opener and pitch to make it easier for people to understand the game and its concepts, rather than being piggy backed onto another thread on the subject.

>What other games have you considered?
Here are just some brief examples:
>Death & Taxes
In the far flung future year of 1979 in the midst of the cold war the united states discovers a literal portal to hell on a south pacific island. You are one of thousands of desk jockey bureaucratic there now attempting to figure out how to tax hell.

>Blorg's Ultimate Survival Climax
You've been abducted to participate in an intergalactic gameshow in the same vein as Japanese gameshows. You are the Earth team and must compete against a number of aliens.

>STOCK TITLE
You are part of a company who takes Stock Photos, each weeks you receive an envelope with what you need to take a picture of that week. It gets increasingly difficult and surreal.

>Finishline
In the same vein as 108 stitches for its use of flashbacks, but instead it is a game about sci-fi super races, based off the film Redline. Each team has a Driver, Promoter, Mechanic, and Junker.

>A Gentleman's Guide to Primitives
You are a European Gentleman in the age of exploration, Europeans can't do magic so instead you need to collect those from 'primitive' culture to do magic for you. A classic example of this is Captain Ahab and Queequeg. Think Pokemon but much more imperial and offensive.

>Cult of Personality
A heist style game where you are a member of a cult, each week you attempt to kidnap a celebrity.

>Utopia
You are a mouse in a fictional and larger version of the Rat Utopia Experiments. This takes place during the switch from a Type 3 to a Type 4 colony, and during the rise of The Beautiful Ones.

These are some of the wackier ideas I have on my list. I could also discuss more serious titles.

>Beneath the Wall
Fantasy alt-history. A two mile high wall cuts off the majority of the continental united states and serves as a backdrop for the american civil war. The USA has become a center of the occult as the wall has been dug into and things been discovered. From over the wall horrible beings that look like twisted men descend. The game is set just after the Great Chicago Incursion during the beginning of the civil war and the rise of the Edenist Movement.

>Empires of Gold and Jade
An occult apocalypse destroys most of humanity and blankets the Americas in a shimmering field of energy. Hundreds of years later when it pulls back the Californian coast is uncovered. Colonists from the new Chinese Dynasty have built cities in the ruins along the coast, and recently have declared their independence from imperial rule. Great riches, chemicals, rubber, and old information are among the ruins of Americana.

>Mirrorcatch
Divinity is parasitic and something best left to the poor. This is a game set in a city where looking glasses allow viewings of things from beyond. An insect that lays its eggs in upper dimensional space can cause humans to be warped by it, infecting them with divinity as a conduit through the eggs. This is almost always fatal.

>Bronze Age
You are bronze age Egyptians doing missions for the great pharaoh.

>A Machine's Learnings
You are a machine, a machine built from one of the great and glorious mobile factories that crawl their way across the surface of the earth, devouring everything in their paths. You are human, or are at least designed to feel human, your emotions are a series of chips in the back of your head. Removing them will cause your body to warp and change itself, if you have nothing but anger you reconstruct yourself to be larger, a beast of destruction. What actual humans remain monitor their mechanical children, sometimes are ghosts, sometimes as boogeymen, sometimes as benefactors, sometimes as gods.
>>
>>60815342
>1000 Years Of Darkness
In most regards it is a normal fantasy setting. There is a great evil overlord who promises a thousand years of darkness. However moments before he defeats the intrepid heroes an orbital bombardment destroys his stronghold. A hard sci-fi civilization has been monitoring the planet and chose this as their moment they had to intervene. You play 50 years later, after the sci-fi civilization steps in to govern the strange fantasy world more directly, and research 'magic' which seems to be isolated to this world.

>H.I.M.S.
Humanity is stuck in a time loop. In 2039 information only time travel is invented, but it is only able to send back information to the moment the first device was activated. The second it was information began pouring in, garbled and terrifying. In a few years humanity was to be invaded, and they were sending back all the technology and hopes to combat this eldritch threat. These messages are layered over one another, and this loop for humanity's desperate survival has happened countless times. The most important thing sent back are the H.I.M.S. (Humanoid Integrated Mechanical Suit) schematics, a mech designed to have perfect pilot integration. This is achieved through the main operating system being an imprint of the personality of the pilot. Along with the schematics numerous personality AIs are sent back in information form. You are one of the unfortunate souls who is able to pilot a H.I.M.S.

>>
>>60819883
It is less being surrounded by a wall and more there is a wall you are partially surrounding. The wall is also not built by man, but is a up to 2 mile high featureless monolith of grey stone older than recorded civilization. The things inside the wall are less like the Shingeki no Kyojin titans and more horrible amalgamations of flesh and bodies.

Oh. You're discussing the "scenic" variants of the Dharma. How lovely. Better than nothing, I suppose. Good luck. There is a fair chance you will find a viable intermediate state there. In the interest of all, the clearest "source text" of the Buddha's Dharma, the Pali Canon, should be mentioned in this thread. There.
>>

>acting pretentious about Buddhist baseball mini games.
>>
>>60820776
This is a game, not a goddamn Buddhist text. Go bitch about how Asura's Wrath and Saint Young Men are inaccurate while you're at it, you joyless piece of spinach.
>>
>>60821077
>>60820901
>Pretentious
Meh. In depth and factual data in a field can seem pretentious no matter how it is presented. The interested can verify matters for themselves given the meager points presented -- something difficult to do without topical information.
>bitch about inaccuracy
Not actually my point. I'll leave it to others to weigh in on the validity of presenting/introducing the Dharma via odd mediums.

The listing of the source text where the interested may find it, and a very brief contrast that gives a sense of relative durations in the vehicles is successful by my measure. Frankly, at this point the dev could go into more depth on any and all of his other ventures and my purpose would be equally served from an informational perspective.

The joyless spinach bit was pretty funny, though.
>>
>>60821301
I mean sure, but the game is about heavily drinking and baseball as much as it is Buddhism.

>>
>>60821301
M8 you need to try being less fucking passive aggressive.
>>
>>60823823
>>60824850
>Passive aggressive
I'm not going to bother to contest that. We can examine a few of my earlier points, which led to that conclusion. Buddhism has 3 branches given in chronological order of occurrence i.e (A,B,C) All currently exist now.

The Mahayana branch(B) of Buddhist practice has several unnecessary elements of prayer and a strong inclination towards aiming for a) good rebirth or b) the bodhisattva-state. These are wholesome goals, though they would almost certainly (take longer/have more intermediate steps) than the Arahant's path that the Buddha extorted as road for the Noble Ones in (A).

This can be illustrated by two Mahayana (B) schools (both of which retain the earlier elements mentioned as they are of the B branch): the Chan and Zen sects, while both being valid paths, have embraced anti-intellectualism to such a degree that usually only cryptic meditation instructions are transmitted.

The Vajrayana branch (C) goes even further along this detour by adding in mandatory empowerments derived from a guru and requirements related to a given lineage. In addition several elements of Tantrism (practices of mudra, yantra and mandala) have been placed in the system. Whether these elements have validity or not, it certainly isn't mandatory in the Buddha's view, nor necessary for liberation.

Compared to the clear, large, but fully explained source text and branch (A), these branches (B,C) and the paths within them are literally scenic, as in either having a large set of unnecessary intermediate steps or having areas that must be overcome with intuition rather than straightforwardly transmitted rules. Rules which are clearly laid out in (A).
>>
>>60827912
(con'td)
Sadly there has even been enough mangling of transmission such that some believe (incorrectly) that the Bodhisattva's Path (B,C) only reaches completion when all sentient beings are released from the fetters of suffering. On the level of individual practice, desire for all sentients to reach liberation is actually a motivation, not a directly reachable goal (due to mortality etc) -- especially it is no limit placed upon the practitioner's progress.

The full meditation instructions and the principles behind them are retained and explained in the Pali Canon -- the oldest surviving collection of Buddhist texts -- and are practiced by the Theravada sect (A). Of all the Buddhist sects it literally has the smallest amount of superfluous information added to it. Weird mantras, meditations, or obscure vows are not necessary. Nor is a teacher necessary, as the rules, reasons and rationales of the entire practice are laid bare and not hidden behind symbolism, prayers, or ritual.

Can the Buddha's Path still be seen within (B) and (C)? Yes, but it is unlikely you would recognize what was mandatory and what was errata unless you have: 1) sufficient practice and attainments developed to recognize (A) and/or 2) familiarity with of the elements of B and C which are extraneous and superfluous. (A) remains the most efficient route that requires the least unnecessary effort of the practitioner.
>>
>>60827912
Ok, where does baseball fit in?
>>
>>60827936
(con'td)
Given a choice between something lightweight, clear, and with only the necessary information like (A), any other choice must be "scenic".

The greater superfluous elements can be expected to be distracting and to require additional energy. Any of the mandala meditations of (B,C) are quite obvious examples of this, whereas the kasina meditations of (A) are streamlined and acknowledged as a (non-mandatory) learning tool. Some of the sects of (B,C) actually consider the intricate visualizations to be mandatory, or at least will not disclose which elements are optional.

If even with all of this extraneous weight they still enable you to reach the goal then they would be viable. This is all true and verifiable. I could even justify considering them to be "better than nothing" from a factual basis.

Rather than even make the attempt, I will however concede to being passive aggressive on all points with the exception of the joyless spinach thing (still funny). Being correct doesn't actually give me a license to be a bastard, after all.

And since I'm taking up so much space anyway...
>heavy drinking and baseball
Neither of these is mutually exclusive to liberation and the reduction of suffering. The householder's path may not be the "fast track", but it is still valid -- getting to the end goal is more important than how long it takes. See what happened there? And you thought you were the only one learning something, eh? Too bad I had to churn out a long essay to relearn that one. Or not. Also, I was *technically* correct -- which everyone knows is the best sort. Hah.
