There should be a Magic anime. And I don't mean one about the boring asshole Planeswalkers doing things, I mean an anime about highschool or college kids playing MTG with each other and learning about friendship.
>>
>>62453776
That would be bad and you should feel bad.
>>
>>62453776
I'd watch it. That's basically what Wizard's Soul is and I like Wizard's Soul.
>>
>>62453776
Im sure it would be cringy as hell if wotc has any agency on how its made but i would still watch the first episode

As long as we get this scene whenever someone summons a 7+ CMC creature.

> 7+ CMC creature
> that kind of epic scene

Fuck no. This is Magic.

"I Tap 8 mana, AND I CAST THE MIGHTY-"

"I tap 3 mana and counterspell."

"w-What? I haven't even said what it is yet."

"Does it cost all of the lands you just tapped?"

"Yes."

"Then it doesn't happen. You don't have any mana left. Is your turn over now?"

"Hey man, don't be a dick."

"That wasn't a yes or no answer to my yes or no question. Your spell got countered, are you done with your turn or not?"
>>
>>62453878
This. If wotc had any input they'd find ways to ruin it.
>>
>>62454048

Oh it's not like the antagonists put three Bottomless Trap Holes in their deck and blew up every sweet monster Yugi tried to summon. If the plot demands a top deck into an Emrakul, they'll get a top deck into an Emrakul.

Considering the focus Wizards has tried to put on the "YOU ARE A PLANESWALKER" thing ever since Jace and crew took the spotlight, it confuses me somewhat that they haven't actually capitalized on that concept. Instead of making it all about Wizards' cut-rate superheroes, you can do a dumb shonen Isekai storyline easily within the current framework of the narrative. I guarantee even the most tiresome generic shonen protag would be infinitely more likeable than the current Gatewatch, and it opens the possibility to introduce the concept of /yourdudes/ to paper. Come up with some sort of customizable Planeswalker card system so you can play your special snowflake OC and craft a deck all about you. Kids would eat it up.
>>
>>62453776
Wizard's Soul was a manga about tcg players playing some mish mash of yugioh magic and whatever else. It was ok

I honestly disagree.
I'm not saying that the Gatewatch are good but Isekai trash is much worst.
The dream would be just an adaptation of the OG Ravnica saga.

Stickers!

Seriously, leave the art field blank, have a bunch of stock empty planeswalker cards in each color with equivalent mana costs and the same starting loyalty, and then you can have loyalty abilities as stickers. Each Planeswalker can have 3 of your choice, with some loyalty ability stickers having a little colored bar on the side that show they can only be used by that particular colored planeswalker.

Technically you can even give your PW 3 ultimates, they will just be unuseable trash because you can't reach the loyalty to use them because you never gave yourself any +1s.

I ordinarily hate deferring to the opinion of self-proclaimed "anime pros" but Mothers Shill-for-Crunchyroll-all-day-erry-day Basement did make a good video about the subject. A lot of card game anime don't get card games right and usually rely on the right card being drawn at the right time for maximum dramatic effect. If a Magic Anime were to become a thing, it would require actual knowledge of the game, deck building and win conditions. It would basically require the game to be won or lost before it has even started. He rightfully draws comparisons to Shokugeki no Souma, where we usually see Souma drafting a strategy and then cut to the end result, with the cooking itself often changing very little about the overall strategy. It's not like he walks in without a plan and just does whatever feels right.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJ6YeGCM1wo
This is the video in question.

If that's how it's handled, all it needs to become a succes is some relatable characters and good character designs. If the writers are insecure about how to handle that, they can just make pretty girls with big boobies and hope nerds see past their vapid personalities Just like real life amirite gaiz? High five?
>>
>>62454247

At the same time, if you are representing MTG accurately even the absolutely best deck ever will occasionally lose outright to a worse deck because you never played a spell.

Too many lands drawn, you lost the game. Not enough lands drawn, you lost the game. With shuffling, you can mulligan down to 3 cards and then draw every round and STILL never see a land purely due to shitty luck that game. It happens, even in decks that are more than Lands Matter and thus are mostly lands.
>>
>>62454247

I would either take an "actual" card game anime or something at least as camp and silly as Yu Gi Oh, any in between would be disappointing.

Luck remains a factor, but generally a good deck eliminates luck as much as possible and wants to establish win conditions as soon as possible. This is for example why in the Yu-Gi-Oh (real world card game) meta Want Jug is considered overpowered, as it puts you two steps closer to your win condition for the sacrifice of only one card which has no real use otherwise (which is why it's often banned). Even that one card that allows you to draw one in exchange for 1000 LP is considered worth it, because a lot of the pro players consider that one extra step towards your win condition worth the blow (as they believe the only LP that matters is your last. If you've aced your win condition, the enemy's LP don't even matter anymore).

I was going to say something using the sideboard as a zone and having three slots to fill on a given "generic Walker" card where you choose some stuff of the appropriate color and plus/minus value, but that'd work too. Have some sort of super premium service where you slip Hasbro $100 and they'll custom print your OC walker (if they have a legal ability combination) with some custom art you send them, and you've got a tidy little money making scheme that Timmy and Vorthos would be all over.

>Come up with some sort of customizable Planeswalker card system so you can play your special snowflake OC and craft a deck all about you.

I could see this working in a single player RPG.
>Make your avatar, and name your walker. First and last name, as to stay in line with regular planeswalker nomenclature.
>You choose 1 color. Determining your starting deck and starting planeswalker abilities.
>Your planeswalker is 6 mana and costs 4CC. Starts at 4 Has a +1, -3, and a -7.
>As you play through the game, travel to different planes, and beat their storylines. You get some things.
>You get new cards to add to your deck, some are gifts you get for beating quests, others are from random drops from beating monsters.
>You get new titles for your planeswalker. Following the "First Name, Title" nomenclature. So Anon, Beast Tamer if you're feeling particularly green. Other, basically cosmetic effects are added.
>You gain block relevant mechanics and abilities to add to your walker. In the graveyard matters plane, you could get thought scour as a +2 on your blue walker. Nahiri's Rummage +2 for red. Etc.
>Your planeswalker can be customised anytime outside of battle, but it has to remain at least 1 of your colors. Your deck does not have to match it, and you don't HAVE to have your planeswalker in the deck.
I mean, the game would probably be linear as shit because its a game made in current year +X. But if it were up to me, more generic abilities would be tied to main game progress or level up but more themed abilities and powerful cards would be tied to sidequests. Getting other planeswalkers to add to your collection would be behind beating their personal stories.
>After reaching Ravnica, you get to choose to add another color and play that guilds storyline.
>After beating the game, you get the dreaded 4th ability and the option of a 3rd color.
>The post-game (god forbid there's effort put into it) leads you to 4 color and ultimately 5 color freedom of identity.

>anime set in MtG-verse
Yes

>Card game anime about MtG
How about no?
>>
Am I alone in kinda wanting to see an anime where the characters play some sort of miniature game be it 40k, x wing, infinity, etc. rather than another TCG anime.

To my knowledge there hasn't been any true miniature focused anime with the closest it's come to being 2 yugioh spin offs which both flopped in terms of the anime and the physical games, build fighters which boils down to rock'em sock'em robots with gunpla, and if you really want to stretch it, series like beyblade and bakugan.
>>
>>62454989

I don't think miniature wargames are very popular in Japan. A combination of expensive and requiring more space to play than they usually have available.

>>
>>62454247
This video is great but he manages to whiff hard.
Card game anime aren't trying to get the card game parts right because only /tg/ would want a perfectly accurate to form card game anime
What they try to do is create excitement and flair that panders to the primary demographic of shonen series
An MTG anime would have to have everyone almost always playing on curve with next to no "play land, pass"
>>
>>62453842
>>62454157
Thank you, this is exactly what I wanted
>>
>>62455129
There can be tension with mana screw as long as it doesn't stay too long. Some games are just a proper topdeck away from ending. Some games can be turned around from missing a land drop if the mana curve isn't demanding.
The problem with card games is that unlike with balanced and randomless games like chess the player is not entitled to win, meaning that skill isn't everything.
>>
>>62455109
MTG has such a rich library of different planes that it could focus on, and a ton of great stories that could be told without a single planeswalker. Hell, even the Urza jerking off on the early books was a million times better than the fucking gatewatch.
>>
>>62453776
Duel Masters was originally going to be MTG. Iirc, the manga was
>>
>>62454916
WRONG
>>
>>62455212
Even at its jerkiest the early stories never hesitated to depict Urza as a cunt, a fuckup and a guy who was in the wrong as often as not. That's why despite him being a smug pretentious Blue prick he's remembered fondly while the most anybody has ever liked Jace was when he forgot he was Jace for a while. Three dimensional characters are always more interesting.
>>
>>62454247
this entire precepts completely misses the point of a card game anime, but is understandable from the point of view of a typical mtg grognard
A magic game is interesting when you take into account the fluff of the decks, the back and forth and those very specific situations when the game suddenly devolves into crazy territory
A card game anime such as Yu-Gi-Oh! will include stuff like strategies, combos and "mindgames" but those don't equate to their real-life equivalents. Do you know why ? Because it's better to play a card that spells each letter of the word D.E.A.T.H once per turn until the full word is completed for an instant win rather than seeing an stupid combo that only works with two or three cards, doesn't end the game right away but still ends up winning the match
Some of the most memorable scenes in Yu-Gi-Oh! completely ignore the rules, to the point that in some scenes we don't even know which turn it is anymore. The games naturally devolve into crazy territory because anything can happen, they'll just make a card up on the spot

This is why I think that a MTG anime is impossible to sell to current players, because they WANT people to "play the game" right. Just go into the comments of any youtube game and you'll see people arguing about the rules because to them, that's fun
But that's far from good enough for a majority of people, who just don't care
>>
>>62455129

Play land, pass would happen, but only as setup for a later gambit.

"Ha, he hasn't cast any spells for two turns! He is mana flooded, or only has cards too expensive to cast! Sucks to be you, Tee Gi, but I'm playing an aggressive deck. You'll be dead by turn 5."

"This is it, Tee Gi. I've cast a creature every turn, and you have nothing but mana. Your last remaining 9 life are mine!"

"Wrath of God! Destroy all creatures."

"Oh no, my board state! Its okay, I just have to... my hand is empty. Shit. He has a full hand. SHIT. Okay, I can still recover from this. He only has 9 health, I just have to-"

And then Tee Gi controls his shit and combos out, and he never attacks with another creature again.
>>
>>62455185
skill doesn't matter for a tcg anime

>"I tap 3 mana and counterspell."
>"Ha! You fell right into my trap! Akroma, Angel of Fury can't be countered!"
>"N-NANI!?"
>>
>>62454247
I watched the video and just thought: Instead of just tossing away all of the shonen anime goodness why not just toss in the best out of three and the mindgames that come with that format? It would make a great freaking victory if the BBEG is outsmarted after a tense third round of almost equal wits, tricks and luck.
>>
>>62455260

>in his last book he just decides to join him for no real reason and throws away all his character development because he goes crazy lol!

>>
>>62455480
It's not like it isn't foreshadowed, Xantcha notices Urza's more like his Phyrexian foes than he'd like to admit. And ultimately it is Urza's plan that defeats Yawgmoth, and his greatest champion (Gerrard) who stops Urza himself from making the worst play of his life.

>>62455523
Naw, it wasn't properly foreshadowed at all. Becoming he thing you hate most in spirit is far different from just deciding to just join your long time mortal enemy of literally thousands of years on a whim, ESPECIALLY because he saw Mishra (or not who knows) and just left him there. And that ending was a huge missed opportunity to not have the biggest conniving mastermind of the entire mtg universe not have been planning a big backstab against Yawgmoth once he finally dropped his guard.
>>
>>62455601
He didn't literally just decide to join Yawgmoth, he was being mindfucked into doing so. Keep in mind the 9th circle of Phyrexia is LITERALLY Yawgmoth. Urza was stepping into his archnemesis' realm, it was a dangerous play and their similar interests allowed Yawgmoth to dominate him. He dominated Gerrard too, who was LITERALLY created explicitly for the purpose of beating Yawgmoth, and it took Yawgy playing with his food for Gerrard to be able to snap out of it.

It's a story about a girl playing with her dad who is dying from a brain tumor
As the story goes on the girl gets better and better as she does her father starts losing his mental capacity until one day he can't play at all.
She obviously gets her father's cards when he inevitably passes, taking all the cards so far and putting them into one deck.
A few weeks after the funeral she shows up to an LGS to get a game in.
She brings the deck that she had made using all of her father's collection.
It's turn 5
She taps out
Casts Shivan dragon
Passes
Her opponent plays his 3rd Tron land, casts ugin wipes her field then kills hera few turns later.
She had been playing with all these old cards this whole time, and just like letting her father go, she has to let go of the fact that the game she loves doesn't exist anymore.

That's sad. It's kinda depressing when you think about it. How many people here whom you've had pleasant conversations with are dead now? I remember that one girl on /r9k/ who had some kind of severe mental illness and a boyfriend with that same illness, both of whom would never become older than 21. I remember that guy from /d/ who had signs of early onset dementia. I remember that guy on /tg/ with the early onset parkinson.

I try not to think about it, but it's actually kind of painful. I can't call them friends, but they're people I've shared pleasant experiences with. I "knew" them.

bant is more likely, it has friendly critters (green), honourable knights (white) and mindgamey-cards (blue)

There is a niche for miniature wargames in Japan and while small is still big enough to warrant a few shops to carter to it. However I don't think its unpopular because of cost or space, take Gunpla for example its expensive as shit and takes up entire shelves of space, yet bandai is able to milk more money out of it then any other Gundam related work.
The problem seems to be there is no IP/series for anyone to latch on to in Japan, hell 40k only has a small foothold because of fan translations for the guides, a scattering of lore, and one maybe two books.
(and if your not convinced the lack of popularity could be a plot point in an anime. Make it so that the MC has to go threw a small arc or shit where he has to decide is it even worth putting this much time and effort into a game he loves if he can barley find anyone to play with)
>>

I still think it's bullshit. Maybe RG Aggro with mostly creatures and little interaction?
>>
>>62462679
The anime should be about a protag who plays "honest" RG aggro (with actual Mountains and Forests) and starts off winning against better decks by outplaying them, but runs into a wall land must struggle between playing what he wants and playing Jund.
>>
>>62463025
In Modern, would Jund be considered the most "protagonist" deck? I'm not sure if Modern Jund has any glaring weaknesses. I would assume Modern Jeskai Control is the most well-rounded deck.
>>
>>62463075
No, the protag can't have black. The rival and friend can, but not the MC. Unless its offset by the enemy colors and he rocks a Junk deck. Mardu Aggro and Jeskai Control suit his friends decks remember the more colors a deck has, the 'deeper' the character , and only the rivals/antags can rock U/B/x decks

In ferms of modern 5c humans is the "good guy", cause well, humans. Gx Tron is the stupid sidekick, burn is best friend, and merfolk is waifu. Jund would be rival prob, Dredge is the creepy corpsefucker of the class, Lantern is antagonist PEAK PERFORMANCE is endgame villain
>>
>>62464249
>Gx Tron
eldrazi anything is obviously a major clan of villains who threaten the school/world with occult powers
>>
>>62454612
are these supposed to be funny?
>>
>>62464377
Gx Tron isn't E-Tron. Eldrazi Tron and Eldrazi aggro are twins, puppets of the endgame. Typical creepy twins, the MC has to beat them in a two-headed giant match. They have white hair, talk in unison, and are both missing an eye
>>
>>62454048

So can we all agree that the female childhood friend needs to NOT play mono white angels? Give her something fun, maybe storm or grishoalbrand.
>>
>>62469786
If not mono white angels, mono green elves is the other easy route
>>
>>62469832
The point was to give her a bit of depth and not just the whole "friend to all living things" delicate waifu material. Give her a deck that'll make people go "wait, she's actually competent at this."

The one complaint I have with the YGO anime is that almost all the female duelists only play cute things.dec and exist to lose to the bad guy. Is it too much to ask for one who isn't a damsel in distress?
>>
I want a legacy anime where every deck is kind of personified by the player.

>infect is some drowsy sick guy with a constant snot bubble.

>storm is a crazy cackling guy that wears lots of belt buckles.

>red prison is some big stoic guy with a chissled jaw, possibly fresh out of actual prison. Goes from stoic to hype mode when hes got the early game aggro with rabble master or hazoret.

>12post Some old beefy biker guy that hates S&T players because they 'cheat' with show and tell. "Pay the cost or not at all son!" Has lovecraft monster patches on his biker jacket. Currently a bit down on his luck.

>pox Chill goth kid whos really into metal. Loves the long game. Gets super pissed and probably rage quits when paired against lands.

>Miracles Asshole fat guy probably in a fedora who hates fun. Probably has mild ocd about keeping the field empty with only his 2/1 on it. May or may not secretly think hes jace incarnate. Unwarranted sense of self importance.

I'd prolly put the protag on a devler deck, or maybe switched between variants as to always be able to fight the gimmick of the other deck.
>>
>>62454916
Would be cool if it didnt focus on the sjwlgtbbqabcdefg super friends walkers. Fuck the walkers. Fuck jace, and fuck wotc for ruing what little cool bits of personality they had.

A show about the crew of the weatherlight and trying to find the legacy would be cool as fuck though.

OP if that’s what you’re looking for I can not recommend the MTG Arena beta enough. The tutorial ends with you fighting an evil-laughing, one-liner spouting Nicol Bolas. At one point he goes “You cannot defeat me, my power surpasses that of the gods!” only to be like “What is this?!” because I took my draw phase. It’s actually retarded.

He expects you to give up when you're staring down 15 power on the board with a lone 1/4 and 3 life left. But the 1/4 has "whenever you a creature with power 2 or less enters the battlefield, gain 1 life and draw a card."

Cue a runout of blockers that ends with serra angel that lets you wipe the board in combat, then turn it around.

Another funny thing is that he opens with a card that makes each player discard a card, and pitches volcanic dragon to reanimate later. Your navi-like npc is still surprised by this.
>>
>>62454048
Or almost no one plays counterspells and they aren't particularly useful. Like, what if everyone on the show kinda sucked, like they all play the kind of decks you built when you started out and had no fucking clue what you were doing, like "Villain of the week with 4 copies of all 5 colors for circle of Protection and his victory condition is Repentant Blacksmith" and he loses because he doesn't have CoP Artifacts and the hero just casts Colossus of Sardia or something. Then he comes back with CoP Artifacts in his deck and gets BTFOd by Purify. I actually battled that kind of shit before. Or bad guy of the week just slaps down bigass green creatures like Yavimaya Wurm with some acceleration and pump spells. No removal, no card draw, like this is the kind of deck an idiot 10-year-old would build. And he's one of the "best players" in the game since he's smart enough to put Rancor on a creature that doesn't already have Trample. Or if the do battle "Counterspell guy" he has absolutely no board control or bounce or anything so once a creature actually does get through he's hosed.

>Tee Gi vs Rival, Life totals 10/10.
>Rival controls his signature demanding dragon, Tee Gi controls only his great-uncle's Geist of Saint Traft
>"I attack with my Demanding dragon!"
>Tee Gi casts collected company before blocks.
Inner monologue: "Please, i need a creature with flying to block his attack."
>Tee Gi sees and plays 2 Noble Heirarchs
>Dramatic dragon breath engulfs Tee Gi, visibly hurt, as his life total drops to 5.
>"Just give up Tee Gi, if my dragon attacks you one more time you lose, all you have is that geist and a bunch of 0/1s and i still have 10 life. Even with the angel your creatures are just too weak to defeat me!"
>Tee Gi untaps, drawing a second collected company.
"I cast Collected Company! And play another two noble heirarchs from the top of my deck!"
>"Oh look, more weaklings for me to crush. Just like i did your puny friends."
"On their own, my creatures are weaker, yes... But they aren't alone, and neither am I!"
>Tee Gi attacks with his Geist of saint traft.
"Each of my Noble Heirarchs help my Geist to attack, giving him +4/+4. Totalling 10 damage!"
>"No! That's impossible!"
>The glowing spirit strikes Rival, the angel quickly follows. Rival drops to the floor, his dragon fades away, and his life total drops to 0.
>Rival is on his hands and knees, face contorted with confusion.
As he looks up, the camera cuts to Rival's perspective. Tee Gi is smiling, arm extended. "Good game, let's play again sometime."
>Rival smacks Tee Gi's hand away and stands up. "I don't need your pity" He says, packing his things.

I think that skipping to the end result is a mistake. It's all right to just do the slide-show or however the anime handles it in Shokugeki no Souma because it's an independent and focused event. It shows glimpses of the technique used by each Chef, and then shows us the end result and the stress/tension of the characters during the judging.
It's better to do a card game anime like a sports or shounen anime. The "choreography" doesn't need to be perfect, but it needs to properly get across character's personalities during it. It's not about "will the MC draw the card in his deck to get him out of this circumstance?" it's about the difference between the start and end of series when "there's a 10% chance to draw the right card" and how the characters all grow and interact in different kinds of games (2v2, free-for-all, weird anime nonsense).

It's one of the reasons Wizards Soul: Holy War of Love works well. Sure it doesn't give an explicit play-by-play in most cases admittedly, but it focuses heavily on the characters personalities and how they feel when they play against the MC, and on the plays that show off the character's personality. It really says something that when the chapter where Roman lost to her own combo/alt-win that /tg/'s biggest complaint wasn't "it's bullshit she could do that, how stupid of a game/plot armour" but instead was "Why is she mad? Her combo went off in a spectacular way, sure she lost, but that was beautiful.".

the thing about card game animes is that they (usually) have this weird fucked up relationship where they exist to promote each other

A Magic anime, if done in the same general manner as other card game animes, would either have to get a massive cast or massively overhaul card and set design, as cards and groups of cards tend to get connected with characters (as in "hey do you wanna have a deck like [character]? buy packs of our newest set, out now")

The protagonist would probably play a "fair" deck maybe some kind of tribal, I could see wizard tribal. His best friend would play some janky combo deck or tough guy ramp or a combination like Gitrog. Love interest would play something like cat tribal or maybe Mirri voltron/angel tribal maybe like Avacyn control. Queen bee or student president would run Queen Marchesa. Teacher would play Tim deck.

This is a 40 y.o. mother.
Say something nice to her!

You look exactly like all anime girls are mandated to look, i.e., like 14-year-old jailbait.

No, this is believable because of asian genes.

I sometimes do it to make my one friend who plays control think that there's a second card coming and will choose to ignore my first spell to counter the second one that I never actually play.
>>

This is the best idea. Toss in the lands player as a rich, white bearded oldfag. Delver would be the best protag just because the core is usually the same, and your rival should be someone who constantly runs shitbrews that somehow win (think of the spice lists that pop up on mtgo 5-0 occasionally)

HAHAHAHA this is what control fags believe.

>Love interest should be playing Iona stax
Jesus Christ, do you want everyone to hate this girl? Although, having a girl stax you the whole game and make fun of you with a smug smile could be really sexy.

>Zurgo smash
Yeah, I could see this as a proper best friend deck.

The protagonist needs to have gotten his deck from a father figure like a big brother, uncle, gramps, etc. Maybe Allies without food chain.

>Pshh - nothin' personnel, kid

Are you sure this isn't the correct flavour text of this card?

>do you want everyone to hate this girl?
Yes because Childhood friend should be the real winner of his heart with a five color slivers deck
>>
>>62453776
Protag plays midrange, best friend plays aggro, rival plays control.
>>
>>62504510
5 color slivers is boring. Childhood friend should have a more genki deck like trying to make boros work with Tajic or Gisela. Too bad those decks always lose, like her love life.

Then how bout Kiki Jiki w/o combo

I agree with this, you could give personality to the different Legendary creatures and whatnot.

B/R/U and his signature card is Nicol Bolas.

Could also work pretty well. Lends itself more to the random one offf top deck moments.

Dudes play magic on Earth. Maybe even get into a FNM standard tournament or something.
Dudes become Planeswalkers, gotta stop Nikol Bolas like it's a rite of passage.
Dudes planeswalk to different planes you know and love. Maybe add in a Planeswalker/commander tournament arc that spans all the planes.
Dudes discover, enrage, and gotta stop, the Eldrazi menace from killing all the planes including Earth.
