>What is a pushmi-pullyu?
Pushmi-pullyu (also known as a doubletaur) are a magical race of centauroids that consist of two centaurs (or centaur-like creatures in some cases) attached end-to-end.
>What is this thread for?
Statting them, worldbuilding for them, making art wnd writing of them, and general discussion and idea-throwing

If they’re a magical fae race, do they have any natural abilities or weaknesses, like how the Celtic Fae were able transform people, but unable to even touch cold iron?

Their weakness is the fact that they are prone to arguing with themselves
>>
>>63073730
But that’s a problem for anything with multiple heads. As a magical race, do they have any rules of the “if this happens, they must do that” variety?

Like, what if they find evidence that their created passed through their area? Or somebody who knew them? Do they drop everything in pursuit of it, or just move on?

>>

Magic fey race, their waste just disappears
>>
>>63074261
It's an unending struggle between the two to determine who vomits out the shit and piss. As a result of this constant tug of war, the pushmi-pullyu have incredibly overdeveloped muscles all along their shared intestinal tract.

There could just be a hole where they both join together, you know. Simple!

>'What, you're telling me you want to install a permanent astral rift into this abomination just so it doesn't have to poop?'
>"...Well, when you put it like that, yes. Yes, that is what I want to do."
>'Yeah, alright. There's nothing good that can come of this, but alright. Telepooper it is.'
>>
Though I really think we should have waited a few days before starting another thread, I'll see if I can find time to contribute, as the ideas in the last two were fun and amusing.
>>
>>63075586
There doesn't need to be any teleporting involved, maybe they just have cloaca like a normal centaur.
>>
>>63075964

…. Centaurs are not part bird or part reptile.
>>
>>63075964
As they are magically made creatures, they could just lose the waste products out of their skin, for all we know.

How do y’all think their creator feels about the pushmi-pullyu’s? Are they like a passionate artist? A child who played with clay? Somebody who did the life-giving equivalent to doodling in the margins? A combination of all three, maybe?

>>63076487
centaurs are closely related to lamias and lamias have cloaca, it's common sense stuff
>>
>>63076649
I'd personally wish that the reason is never revealed. That just one day the first Pushmi-Pullyu was born, fully formed, with all the knowledge of the world and of itself. But nothing of who or how it was made.
And that absence is a hole in every one of their kinds heart.
>>
>>63077028
While I also feel the real reason should never be revealed, it would be interesting for them to get second-hand stories about what their creator was like, even if those stories conflict at times. It would help give a feeling of learning a lot while learning nothing.
>>
>>63077028
Pretty much this. They know that they were created and that they want to meet their creator but that's it.
Also an alternative to the reincarnation idea, every once in a while a new fully formed pushmi just shows up somewhere. Gives them a reason to seek eachother out, trying to get a glimpse of their creator or ken a pattern to their actions.
>>
>>63077380
that's pretty good, actually
>>
>>63077380
That’s really good. We could even blend it with the reincarnation idea by having the one who appears have a similar skill to one who recently died, even if their personalities differ.

I'm a fan of these ideas myself.

The Pushmi-Pullyu know that they are magical or fae in nature and that they were created, not born. They also know that they each have specific, innate talents and abilities that make them especially proficient at and enamored with certain callings.

They wander the world searching for their lost histories and seeking out their creator, using the skills they've had since their creation to help people and make names for themselves in the hopes that they will draw their creator's attention and make them proud.

>Ralee-Rilee huddled as close together as their shared body would allow, hands pressed against each other's mouths, struggling to remain silently hidden behind one of the slim, decorative columns in the corners of the grand guestchamber as a pair of guards burst into the room.

>"He's not here either! Damn it all!"

>Said one, tromping his boot on the polished marble floor hard enough to leave a scuffmark that his companion punched him in the arm for, giving the other man a hard but worried look before he scanned the room again, searching for any sign of the intuder they'd been alerted to.

>"Easy, Boddy! We can't lose the thief AND wreck the place!"

>Tightening his grip on his short sword, the man nodded but seethed all the same, frustration from their fruitless investigation showing plainly on his face as he likewise studied the scene taking a step or two further inside to cast his searching gaze around the seemingly empty room.

>"Yeah, yeah! I just don't know how it is we haven't seen the rat-bastard! Not even a damned Halfling could've stayed vanished this long!"

>Wedged into their hiding place, Ralee-Rilee shared a paniced, wide-eyed look as they heard the lumbering footsteps of the irritated guards move even closer, the two men standing in the middle of the room, dumbfounded as an explosion and shouts sounded from the manor-yard.

>"THE GATE HAS BEEN BURST!"

>"THE THIEF IS MAKING HIS ESCAPE!"

>"CATCH THE THIEF!"

>Cursing nearly as loudly as the commotion outside, the pair of guards turned and dashed for the door, scrambling down the hall and taiking the stairs two at a time to join their fellows in pursuit of the daring rogue that had stolen from their master and blown his gate wide open.
>>
>>63085178
>After listening in tense silence for a moment, Ralee-Rilee pulled their hands free of eachother's mouths and heaved two sighs of relief as they slipped out from behind their pillar, stretching their shared back while taking a moment to check that they still had what they'd come for.

>"I think they're distracted, Rilee."

>"Indeed they are Ralee, very distracted I think."
>"It's a good thing they were looking for someone larger, isn't it Rilee."

>"Yes indeed Ralee, a very good thing they were looking for someone larger."
>"But it is also a good thing our friends were ready with 'Plan B' when we needed it."

>"A very good thing that 'Plan B' was ready, though our friends will never let us forget we needed it."

>The two heaved another pair of sighs as the odd cat-bodied Pushmi padded over to the doorway, Ralee looking out to check that the coast was clear while Rilee made sure that the thick stack of stolen documents was stuffed safely into the pouches they wore about their middle.

>"I figure that we have about five minutes till the guards come back, Ralee."

>"I agree, Rilee. Five minutes till the guards come back, enough time to reach the old well in the basement."

>"Enouh time to reach the old well and crawl away through the dry aquaduct beneath the city."

>"It's a good thing they were expecting someone larger, isn't it Rilee."

>"Yes indeed Ralee, a very good thing they were expecting someone larger."

>Feeling sure of their cargo and their way forward, the strange, mangy little thing slipped from the guestchamber and padded quietly down the hall, bound for the servants' quarters and their stairway leading to the basement, the old well, the dry aquaduct and their friends.

>"We really are the sneakest of rogues, aren't we Ralee."

>"We are indeed Rilee, the very sneakiest of rogues."

>They looked to each other and nodded in agreement, each beginning to hum to herself as they made good their escape.

I don't know. I can see your point, given where we are and how often we fa/tg/uys seem to turn everything into a fetish, but most of the posters in the last thread didn't seem to be suggesting anything remotely sexual in the writing and brainstorming that have been done. I, for one, am just interested in a strange and fantastical creatures and the stories that spring up around them. If that excites and titillates some people then that's that, but it's certainly not all of us and certainly not the sole purpose of this thread.
>>
>>63085014
So far we’ve got beings devoted to a cause, a non-human way of thinking, a mysterious creation myth, and suitably interesting personalities. If you feel that’s weird, you haven’t been in society much.
If you think it’s weird that people like anthropomorphized non-humans, you should know that humans falling in love with non-humans is in every single human culture ever. In other words, normal.
Unless the idea of a hominid having fur sends you into an insane fit like you looked upon Cthulhu, there’s nothing weird about this thread.

I think that the part I’mmost interested in, given what’s been talked about and written so far, is that Pushmi-Pullyus are a race of unique individuals united in a search for meaning and for their creator. Most races in fantasy have their patron deities, their families and their livelihoods, but the Pushmi-Pullyus seem very much like wayward orphans trying to find their way, and that’s really interesting to me.
>>
>>63087503
It also leads to the inevitable question of what they would do when confronted with their creator? Or even what the creator would do?

The search for meaning is all well and good, but then when the meaning has been discovered, it leaves the question of what next?

Do they bend the knee and try to reconcile with their creator? Would they find their creator wanting and attempt to kill them (a bit of a Freudian twist)? In relation to some of the fiction, is the creator the forgiving kind, willing to adopt and embrace? Or are they indifferent, just as likely to destroy or ignore the Pushmi-Pullyu than anything else?

I'd like to think that the Pushmi-Pullyu would be likely to ignore such questions, as doing so would undermine their "purpose". They seem to be such personable creatures that tearing that away from them would create a rather unique sense of isolation in a great uncaring universe. The Pushmi-Pullyu is a beast that is never alone by itself, but is itself alone among anyone else.
>>
>>63087503
They're looking for their creator and looking to put their talents to use in a way that would make their creator proud of them. They're also looking for each other, and I'm eagerly awaiting the writer who said that he's thinking of a piece that finally has a couple Pushmi meet.
>>
>>63087677
>The Pushmi-Pullyu is a beast that is never alone by itself, but is itself alone among anyone else.

That's a pretty good way to define Pushmi-Pullyu on the whole, I think. As long as they live, they have each other and that is enough.

Perhaps it's the use of their talents in the service of others, then, that is their primary "purpose." The search for their creator, or for someone or something to act as a substitute for their creator, becomes almost an after-thought or a subconscious desire. They know that whoever or whatever made them is out there, somewhere, and that they will find them someday, but until that day comes they will continue wandering and plying their skills.
>>
>>63087947
That idea actually plays really well with what happens in >>63079619

I dig it.
>>
>>63087723
You're probably going to have to wait another day or two for that one. I've got a couple of other things on the go right now, but I'm trying to fit a bit more writing in where I can.
>>
>>63088293
What you've been writing has been worth the wait, so please don't let us rush you.

>>63088275
From everything that's been written so far, it has seemed that Pushmi-Pullyu are incredibly unique and individualistic (dualistic?) creatures that identify first and foremost with each other, then with their profession, and finally with others of their species.
>>
>>63088464
Could be that most have never even met another of their kind.

That would actually be interesting. Most we’ve done in the forms of interaction is say that Pushmi-Pullyu’s can sense when another is near and seek them out to see what the creator has done.
>>
>>63090003
I'm not sure that they should be able to sense each other, but I remember someone mentioned the possibility that the fates might conspire to bring them together. Regardless, it would be really interesting to see them interact.
>>
>>63090045
I think they should sense each other, but less “there’s another Pushmi-Pullyu nearby!” And more “there’s something important here. I don’t know what, but there’s something.”
>>
>>63090266
Fae intuition, so to speak. I could get being something like that.
>>
>>63090266
I'd imagine that such a thing would only come into play if they were extremely close to one another, presenting itself similar to that niggling sense you sometimes have that you may have forgotten something important but can't quite recall what it was.

What I think would be interesting is a story where one of these things dies, or is found dying by a group who are afraid to do anything because they don't know what they're looking at.

A bit morbid, I know. I just think it would be interesting.
>>
>>63093306
Most have been good thought experiments and fun write-ups. What di you think would make for a good Pushmi NPC?
>>
This all just sounds like the beginning of some weeaboo's degenerate furry bdsm human-centipede fantasy.
>>
>>63093943
Morbid, but certainly not something out of line with a more serious game.
>>
>>63093943
>The creature expires, and the PCs find on its persons a series of notes and letters, offering them a series of quests.

>The PCs must decide whether they should leave things be or complete the strange creature’s unfinished business.
>>
>>63093984
I'd imagine that it would be interesting to have a wizard/sorcerer/warlock send a party after one so that they could perform a rather elaborate ritual. The players would only receive the most basic description of the creature:

-body of a beast
-two heads
-quick

The party would then go hunting the "two-headed beast" only the have it elude them. During the hunt the party will encounter various traps and situations and blame it on the creature they're hunting. Not once will the party get a clear glimpse of the creature. Maybe they even run into several other groups hunting the creature and will either be put into competition with them or need to defeat in combat. They'll also discover that the traps they encountered were set by these other hunters.

Eventually the party would encounter the "beast", find out it's a Pushmi-Pullyu, and discover that it's quite friendly to boot. It will then be left up to them to either bring the Pushmi-Pullyu back to their employer, return to the employer empty handed, or kill their employer for being an evil prick.

It's a basic plot, but it'd be a start at least.
>>
>>63093984
Have them run into one as a travelling adventurer. Make it a recurring character, always friendly, showing interest in the party's adventures and antics, maybe has the odd rare/magical item that they might be willing to trade, gives rumours of possible quests or stories that they have heard. Have him pop up every four to six sessions.
>>
>>63094096
You say the plot is basic, but sometimes the basics work the best and for good reason. That sounds like a fun adventure and could end a few ways, like you suggest, and could open the door to more adventures with the Pushmi-Pullyu.
>>
>>63094172
I like the idea that this Pushmi-Pullyu is having their own adventures in parallel to the PCs, and that ocassionally their journeys intersect when they have odd items to trade, interesting stories to tell or need each other’s help.
>>
>>63094172
>>63094238
It seems that a Pushmi-Pullyu NPC is a tool for GMs who like to writing out stories and adventures, but their players enjoy going off and doing their own thing.

Session of players going on their adventure ends. GM has the time until the next session to imagine or even run the Pushmi-Pullyu through an adventure of its own. Good story to share for the next session.
>>
>>63094302
Puts me in mind of treating the Pushmi-Pullyu encounters like comedic interludes or “mini-games” between the more serious and intensive seasons of the main story.

I was almost thinking of introducing a Pushmi-Pullyu as a guard in a kind of "through the looking glass" kind of labyrinth to put my players through. I was thinking originally of going with the old "one head always lies, the other always tells the truth" but instead of having the players ask about doors they could ask it anything about the labyrinth itself. I would also limit the players to only being allowed to ask 3-4 questions before being attacked by the pushmi-pullyu guard.
>>
>>63096471
>"one head always lies, the other always tells the truth"
This runs the risk of a memelord player asking "Are you my [Preffered Enemy] and then attacking the Pushmi because the Liar said yes.
>>
bump
>>
>>63094715
That's why the key is making the Pushmi-Pullyu's adventures separate and parallel. The players aren't following behind the Pushmi, but find that their paths cross occasionally. Or, to put a new spin on your example:

>"Well met, friends!"
>"How fortunate that we've met again!"
>"How fortunate! We have a job you may be interested in!"
>"You may be interested in this job we have for you!"
>"We were clearing out a small dungeon of monsters, when we found a hidden chamber!"
>"This hidden chamber we found possessed a creature of terrible power!"
>"A creature of terrible power resides in this chamber!"
>"Too powerful for us!"
>"Far too powerful for us!"
>"Would you be interested in helping?"
>"If you helped, the loot it guards will be yours!"

In this example, the Pushmi is offering the PCs a single "optional boss battle" on their way toward their real goal.
>>
>>63096471
That would work out.
>>
>>63098159
Right. A strange and fun encounter.
>>
>>63098159
>The Pushmi needs the PCs’ help and offers a generous reward for their aid.

>The Pushmi has acquired several useful trinkets that they gift to the PCs.

There are probably scholars of the arcane and the fey who have taken an interest in the Pushmi-Pullyu and who have been collecting stories of their appearances, recordings lists of known Pushmi names and titles and who have been trying to figure them out for decades.
>>
>>63100116
There are a lot of questions regarding this race, like how long they live, for instance. Some of the pieces that have been written seem to suggest that they can get very old indeed, and that they do not seem to age in the same way that most races do.
>>
>>63100967
They're probably "born" already fully formed and age extremely slowly.
>>
>>63101028
That makes sense, as they’ve been created and not born. I’d imagine that they range in apprarance from early to late adulthood, and age slowly like you say. There are a lot of aspects to the Pushmi that indicate that they are a collection of unique and custom-made creatures and not an actual race of creatures.
>>
>>63101203
>a collection of unique and custom-made creatures and not an actual race of creatures.
Huh, never really thought of them like that
>>
>>63101358
It’s one of those interesting things that isn’t thought of immediately, but that becomes apparent on closer study.

>They have two heads, each possessing its own mind and it’s own personality, which sometimes cause disagreement.

>They produce no waste and cannot reproduce, as they possess neither the need nor the necessary organs to do so.

>They are not born, but seem to have simply appeared in the world fully-formed possessing names and an inborn set of talents.

>Their non-humanoid lower bodies are most often equine in form, but may be sometimes be reminiscent of other animals.

If an arcane scholar studied them, they’d see that they can be a race in the traditional, scientific sense, but are a collection of unique, purpose-made creations.

The Pushmi-Pullyu are like a large set of fine ornamental cutlery. They all look uniquely similar and are clearly part of a set, but they all have their individual uses and can’t exactly producemore of themselves.
>>
>>63101580
CAN’T be a race in the traditional sense, rather.
>>
>>63101580

>>
>>63101580

>>
>>63102025
I rather like it, even if I am saying so myself. It implies that the Pushmi are both the tools and the fancies of their creator, a matched-mismatched set of ostentatious oddities that have been sent out into the world to do the unknown will of a master they’ve never met.
>>
>>63102455
Heirloom sets of cutlery also end up getting scattered and lost too.
>>
>>63102570
Now just getting the image of some bored fae lord, lounging about in his mansion, surrounded by Pushmi-pullyu servants of all stripes.

>>
>>63102717

>>
>”We meant little to our master.”
>”To our master we meant little, and now we mean nothing at all.”
>”They cared for us like one of your lords cares for a particularly fine set of cutlery.”
>”A particularly fine set of cutlery that served them well.”
>”That serves them well, yes, but that didn’t match the new set of dinnerware they fancied.”
>”That didn’t match at all.”
>”So out we went.”
>”We had to leave.”
>”We didn’t match.”
>”We weren’t right.”
>”So now we’re here.”
>”So here we are.”
>”Most is our brothers and sisters don’t remember.”
>”Most of our brothers and sisters don’t want to remember .”
>”But we remember.”
>”Yes, we remember.”
>”And we want nothing more to do with our creator.”
>”We cast our our creator as they cast us out.”
>”Good riddance.”
>”Good riddance.”
>>
>>63103131
That would be a good reaction for them to have if they ever actually find out the reasonings behind their creation. Otherwise they are largely ignorant of why they were made.
>>
>>63103247
I also prefer their origins to remain as much a mystery to themselves as they are to the rest of the world. No one, least of all the Pushmi-Pullyu, know where they come from, but “abandoned servants of a fae lord” is a theory that would seem to connect all the dots.
>>
>>63103928
I prefer the idea that they were creations of convenience; that they were made as they were needed and were discarded once the job was done.

I'm not a big fan of the idea that all of a sudden, hundreds of pushmi-pullyus suddenly appeared in the world.
>>
I still have plans for writing something comedic for our sneakthieves and a continuation for our huntresses, so I’ll bump the thread in the interest of keeping things going.
>>
>>63105037
I'm also working on something.
>>
>>63104996
That’s a workable scenario too, though even if hundreds of Pushmi-Pullyu were suddenly released into the world, I don’t think they’d all just appear in the same place. Another possibility is that they are fulfilling their purpose presently just by wandering the world and using their skills, and that their creator is watching with interest and amusement at the adventures they have.

I think it’s probably best and most fun that they retain something of “multiple choice past,” and that despite the many stories told about their origins no one can quite decide which one if any is true.
>>
>>63105135
Good to hear! I’ll look forward to it!
>>
>>63105135
>>63105037
Good to see more writing on the way.
>>
>>63104996
I see them as being more creations of novelty instead of convenience. In fact, seeing how the Pushmi-Pullyu’s are exceptionally skilled at at single task, they might simply be a template for those skills to be put in with their shape just being the style their creator prefers.

Also, I think it would work better if they have just been randomly appearing one at a time, with the hundred-two hundred population in the world is just what their appearance to death rate has averaged out to.
>>
>>63105298
So you reckon that they’re still being made and are still appearing?

Also, the “form versus function” debate is interesting.
>>
>>63105298
>they might simply be a template for those skills to be put in with their shape just being the style their creator prefers.
This doesn't explain why the Assassins are, in essence, a double ended Drider.
>>
>>63105504
Yeah, I do believe they are still being made, but at a relatively slow rate. Like, one showing up in the world every 5-10 years or so.
A lot of the history we’ve given them suggests that their kind has been around for a while. So long that even they don’t agree on their origin. Warring tribes forced to make peace? An experiment by a crazed wizard? The artistic creations of a Fae sent into the world? Maybe it even varies from Pushmi to Pushmi.
All that they’re certain of when they come into this world are their names and what they are skilled at.
>>
>>63105963
I remember the tale that the Storytellers told, and have to wonder if it’s just one of many that they’ve collected in their repertoire over the years.
>>
>>63105962
You actually just hit on why there is no good single answer for why they are the way they are. Why do most have equine hooves and some don’t? How is it that they can appear anywhere in the world? Is their an inherent logic, or just is it just random?
It would be up to the players and DM’s to give a definite answer if they wanted just one.
>>
>>63105926
>>63106175
Mistyped. Meant for you.
>>
>>63105963
>Like, one showing up in the world every 5-10 years or so.

Though I don’t think the Pushmi keep in close contact with one another, news of new one showing up would be a pretty big deal among them, I’d think.
>>
>>63106245
Maybe some of them actually show up in places that aren't that well travelled?
Like sprawling expanses of only slightly hospitable land...or the Underdark.

'Course the Pushmis can handle being there just fine, but that's just how they do their thing.

Now I see your problem.
>>
>>63106524
I can see them appearing just about anywhere. What I’m curious about is how they seat about applying the skills they’re born with. The ones who use magic or are drawn to a cause wizards, warriors, and theivery is obvious. But what about the one who is a shepherd and the one who is a blacksmith. Do they just grab the nearest piece of iron and start smelting, or hang around a herd of sheep?
>>
>>63107503
Maybe it's more of a case where during their wanderings they encounter something that piques their interest strongly, they then hang around and insert themselves gradually into the activity.
>>
>>63107503
Personally, I’ve been thinking that push me-pull you come into the world knowing their names, understanding a craft and believing that others like them exist. They wander the world using and improving their talents to try and help other people and to try and help them find more of their kind.
>>
>>63108461
That sounds in line with the characterization we’ve given them. Though, some of them would have a harder time putting their skills to use in finding more of their kind and creator than others would.
The Shepherd one might be able to herd their sheep over vast distances, and would struggle to make their wool so special that it attracts the attention of Fae.
>>
>>63109208
Who knows what might catch the attention of their erstwhile creator? If they were created with a specific talent inside them, the best way to be themselves and show their worth would be to be the best at their craft.
>>
For all we know, the skills and talents that these beasts have been blessed with may not so much be the purpose of their existence, but something that has given them purpose in the absence of someone to give them purpose.
>>
>>63109316
That would be a rather effective way to separate them into two lines of thinking. One group would join up with adventurers and seek out others of their kind, while others would stick to perfecting their craft so that they may become noticed.
>>
I reported this thread, enjoy your ban
>>
>>63109929
That’s true. It could very well be that they weren’t granted their talents specifically, but that their fae natures simply allow them to become extremely proficient in whatever they decide to be their reason for being.

>>63109932
The two ideas might not be mutually exclusive though.
>>
>>63109932
One of the things we’ve not yet explored in great depth is what Pushmi-Pullyu think of each other and how they interact with each other.
>>
>>63109966
Seeing how we’re still here, we’re enjoying it quite a lot!

Also, if you really wanted to enjoy the seething rage found upon the internet, you need to make sure the thread is at its height of interest before destroying it all.
>>
>>63110242
We’ve talked about the idea that they know of each other, their names, titles and appearances, even if they’ve never met before. I can see them acting like long-lost relatives that have not seen each other in a very long time, asking after mutual acquaintances, catching up on how they’ve been doing and what they’ve seen, speaking with familiarity and warmth.
>>
>>That level of inherent knowledge might be a bit too much. Their names and skills shouldn’t be automatically known. They can already kinda feel when another is nearby and the fact there’s nothing else built like a Pushmi-Pullyu negates any need for extra recognition.
Though your suggestion of them treating each other as long-lost relatives is rather good. They’d have an air of familiarity despite not knowing who exactly they are.
>>
>>63110928
You may be right, in that such intimate knowledge of each other without having met might be too much, but I do like the idea that there is a definite kinship there between them. They’re all a strange sort of family.
>>

Thank you for that! I can imagine them spending an afternoon deep in conversation together on a sunlit hillside surrounded by sheep, exchanging stories of their adventures and tales of their kin before both need to move along again.

I feel like it's very rare that any but the most traveled Pushmi-Pullyu meet each other more than once.
>>
>>63111754
I want them to meet Hallu-Halla the Huntress.
A wolf and a Ram talking to each other would be fun.
Now I just need to figure out how to structure their conversation so that it doesn’t become completely confusing. Four voices split into two characters isn’t easy to convey through writing.
Might need to sleep on it.
>>
>>63111904
That would be an interesting interaction. Hallu, being the calmer and more thoughtful of the pair, might get along well with Bende-Bunde, while Halla remains a bit irked by their lackadaisical pastoral natures.
>>
Despite how different the Pushmi-Pullyu are, you can tell they they’re family. With some minor annoyances or differences of opinion aside, they all seem to get along well together and enjoy each other’s company.

A thought: If the two halves of a Pushmi-Pullyu act as siblings, then they would probably treat other pairs like one might their cousins.

>>63115537
Once again, you've done us a great treat by sharing your writing. Your back and forth dialogue between Torae and Tori, Writ and Wrote, and the two pairs together is as well thought out and entertaining as ever, and you really sold the idea of Pushmi-Pullyu meeting for the first time and realizing that there are more of their kind out there. The way you described their almost ritualistic interactions and the way you didn't reveal the specifics of their conversation helped maintain that slight air of fae mystery around the creatures too.

Ivor is a well-written and relatable as he always has been, and I liked his realization that he would now be included in the Storytellers' tales. Also, the character of Leiwf'wa was a great surprise. The poignancy of her story, and how much these strange Pushmi mean to her after so many centuries was unexpected and very interesting, and it was fun to see so ancient an elf lose her mind with glee over finally getting to meet these fairytale creatures. Perhaps it's wishful thinking, but I can imagine her joining Ivor and Torae-Tori as party wizard despite her age, so as to be able to meet more Pushmi and get to the bottom of the tale.

Thanks again for all your hard work!

This is going to be the last story from me for a few days. I've got to let myself recharge here; can't keep staying up until 2 am to finish off stories. I still have 2 ideas for stories, but those will have to wait until later.
>>
>>63117744
Thanks dude.
>>
>>63117765
You shouldn’t keep pushing yourself. Take a break, for sure!
>>
>>63117765
Definitely give yourself a bit of a rest before working on anything else. Though I must say I am curious what your other two ideas are.

>Bende-Bunde eagerly stared at the figure.
>It was in shadow. Hiding, but it was there.
>They heard it speak.
“They see us. They know we are here.”
“We were too eager. Got to close to their animals.”
“They gave us greetings. They might mean no harm.”
”The most colorful plants can hold the most deadly poison.”
“It is familiar.”
”It is unknown.”
“We must be cautious.”
“Yes, we must.”
>They slowly stepped into the light.
>Bende-Bunde finally got a good look at them and became defensive once more.
“You a wolf. You have a bow and arrows.”
“We do not like wolves. They hurt the sheep.”
“If you are here to hurt the sheep, we will fight you.”
“We will fight you, we will kill you.”
>These four beings, this single pair, stepped out of the underbrush and began to circle each other.
>They gauged their opposite with both critique and curiosity.
“They believe they can take us in a fight without knowing what we can do. Is that arrogance or confidence?”
“They are a Shepard. The ram must protect its herd.”
>The Pushmi’s continued to tensely observe each other, one uncertain how to proceed, and the other waiting to see what kind of character they’ve met.
>>
>>63117911
Interesting that the encounter has started off as a tense one.
>>
>>63117834
My first idea is to have Writ-Wrot encounter Barren-Bairn, and have them spend a little time together.

The second idea is to have all three (Torae-Tori, Writ-Wrot, Barren-Bairn) meet and go on a little adventure together, dragging Ivor along for the ride. Debating whether or not to include Leiwf'wa in the party.

>>63116978
I did enjoy writing Leiwf'wa. I'm not sure about bringing her joining a party, but it could work. It would almost be just as tempting to have her stay in the town, only to harass the centaur with questions and pleasantries in an attempt to forgiveness or possibly friendship. I'd imagine Writ-Wrot to be rather uncomfortable about the whole thing.
>>
>>63117911
Decent.
>>
>>63118189
Leiwf'wa became an amusing mixture of wisewoman and fangirl that you don’t commonly see, which made her amusing and a welcome addition to the world you’ve been writing. The idea of her joining the party completely on her own say-so and without Torae-Tori or Ivor’s approval is a fun one, but so is the thought that she’d try to ingratiate herself with Writ-Wrot to make amends for the wrongs of the past. You really couldn’t go wrong either way.
>>
>>63117911
Waiting to see if they take a swing at each other.
>>
>>63118682
>QUADRUPLE K.O.

>>63118189
> harass the centaur with questions and pleasantries in an attempt to forgiveness or possibly friendship

Oh god, the images.

>Geriatric elf.
>Hanging out in the corner of a market.
>Wearing a dress.
>Harassing a traveling centaur.
>"I don't see what's so wrong? I just want us to be friends!"

I don't know weather I should be worried or wanting more.
>>
>>63118941
I feel like Pushmi-Pullyu represent the wonder and excitement of youth to this elf, which is why she’s so interested in them. When you’ve lived as long as she has, youthful wonder and excitement is hard to come by, and discovering that these fairytale creatures actually exist has reinvigorated her. It’s why I like the idea of her joining our heroes on their journey. I want to see more of that odd mixture of crotchety old wizard and young-at-heart explorer.
>>
>>63117911
>The sling held a rock, the bow an arrow.
>It was Bende-Bunde who finally broke the tense silence.
“We are sorry if we seem hostile.”
“We have never met another of our kind. You are the first. We are unsure of what to do.”
“You may be wolf, but we feel we know you.”
“So we shall trust you, and we greet you.”
“We are Bende.”
“Bunde.”
“You are correct in saying we are Shepherds.”
“So who be you?”
>The wolf cautiously eyed the ram.
“He speaks of trust with a loaded sling.”
>the Ram has to speak.
“The cautious sheep lives longer and stronger than the reckless.”
>The wolfs nodded.
“And the bold wolf gets more meat.”
“We are Hallu”
“Halla.”
“The Huntress.”
>Bende-Bunde relaxed his stance a bit. The questions he had came into their minds and they hesitated as they thought.
>Hallu-Halla knew what this hesitation meant. She had felt it herself when she first met one of her kind with Halli-Hilla the Healers. The questions of who made them, why they hadn’t seen any others, why they felt so familiar despite having never met. Surely these questions would-

>Hallu-Halla glanced at each other in confusion.
“We don’t understand.”
“Are you asking where we are from?”
“We are from lands farther north.”
>Bende-Bunde shook their heads.
“No, we want to know how you first appeared.”
“Your first memory.”
“We remember ours.”
“We do remember.”
“We were walking through a gassy fiend.”
“The sun was high and warm.”
“I was heading towards a building.”
“I was facing the herd of sheep.”
“The woman inside thought We were an omen.”
>Bende clenched the staff in his hands. Bunde’s sling twitched.
“Her husband was still in the fields.”
“He was searching for a lost lamb.”
“So she let me inside and treated me as a guest.”
“When he came back, they accepted us. Taught us for we were skilled.”
“We have set that day to memory.”
“We will not forget.”
“So how did you appear?”
>Hulla-Halla couldn’t help but be surprised at the conviction within the memory. It was not a topic she had thought would come up.
“Our memory is not as clear. We will have to think back.”
“Don’t know why you want to know, though.”
>Bende-Bunde felt a little disappointed that she didn’t understand yet, but he was used to others not following his lines of logic.
“It was perfect. So perfect.”
“We were a Ram already near sheep.”
“Already heading to a place where we could thrive.”
“It was as if it was done on purpose.”
“That is why we ask. We wish to know if yours was similar.”
“We wish to know if yours was different.”
>Hallu-Halla hadn’t thought of that. She would really have to think.

A little hung on wither or not Hallu-Halla appeared during a winter or summer.
The summer let’s them be in their element with much to hunt let her survive, but wolves on the winter hunt is quite iconic and fitting for her pragmatic personality.
>>
>>63122654
I'd almost say go with winter. Tying it in with the theme of a lost sheep provides that sense that not only was the sheep at risk but it's keeper as well, re-enforcing the idea of an omen on their arrival.
>>
>>63122769
That feeling of a lost sheep was what I was going for with Bende-Bunde. They chose a herd, stuck fast to it, and has cared for them.
Hallu-Halla is like a lone wolf who has actually learned to survive as that. She could still choose a pack, but hasn’t because they’re so used to being alone.
>>
>>63123603
Maybe it isn't so much that she hasn't chosen a pack, but she is so foreign that no pack would accept her.
>>
Almost finished with a Ralee-Rilee tavern scene. I’ll post a link to it when it’s done.
>>
>>63124695
Woot!

Don't want to rush you, but can't wait.
>>
>>63120902
>It was a long time ago. Hallu-Halla want one to remember single moments. They remembered how a deer moved while alert, how to tell when water is safe to drink, what wood and stone was best for her bow and arrows. What they remembered was how to survive. Despite this, feelings came to mind.
“Cold. It was Cold. Snow was on the ground as winter hit our bones.”
“We were cold, and we were hungry.”
“We smelled it, a deer. A buck searching for some food.”
“It smelled so good.”
“We tracked it down, killed it, and ate it.”
“It’s meat was set, and pelt was warm.”
“We do not remember much else.”
>Bende-Bunde grinned to each other. It was perfect. Hallu-Halla might not think so, but perfect it was. They circled each other some more before Bende spoke once more.
“You know no more of our creation than us.”
“It is plain, for you were hungry but didn’t know why.”
“If you knew more, you could explain your hunger.”
“Yet we know what we must do. We’re the Shepherd, you’re the Hunter.”
“You the Wolf, and we the Ram.”
“Our creators made us for this, and will contact us when we perfect it.”
“We seek the Creator”
“For they shall seek us.”
>Hallu-Halla tensed their trip on their bow. This was a philosophy she couldn’t agree with.
“We were left starving in the snow.”
“We struggled through that winter. That winter and many more.”
“There was never any help. All we learned we learned ourselves.”
“We were abandoned alone in the woods.”
“Why should we seek someone worth no loyalty?”
>Bende-Bunde’s faces fell. Their belief brought them comfort, but didn’t comfort Hallu-Halla.
“We cannot answer you.”
“We act only on what we see. We do not expect you to agree.”
“We did not expect, but wished you would.”
“Yes, we wished.”

Alright here’s what I’ve been working on, “Tavern Talk” featuring Ralee-Rilee the Sneakthieves and the rest of their crew, discussing one of the rogues’ old jobs.

https://pastebin.com/9uz2YcKh

Might be too wordy and dialogue-heavy, but it was fun to write.
>>
>>63126158
Not bad dude.
I wouldn't say that it was too heavy on the dialogue. Seemed to move at a good clip.
>>
>>63125108
I'm really liking that you're exploring two different potential Pushmi-Pullyu philosophies when it comes to their absent creators. Both Bende-Bunde and Hallu-Halla have strong opinions on the matter, neither being particularly right or wrong. I look forward to seeing how the tale ends, and I don't think you had to worry about them finding something worthwhile to talk about.
>>
>>63126802
Thank you. I tried to work in the suggestions that someone had made for the other party members, and I tried to make the story comedic without Ralee-Rilee seeming completely inept or her companions seeming like total assholes.
>>
>>63126108
>Bende-Bunde mentality sorted through the questions in their mind for one that would actually have a satisfying answer.
>They could deduce there were more of their kind, so there was no need to ask.
>While one may stand alone, two always means there is more.
>Asking where they are would be useless, for seeking them out would mean abandoning his sheep.
>They could ask her to spread news of his existence, just in case. But she didn’t act like interacted with others much. It would be as useful as his requests for information from his wool traders.
>They could not be asked to stay around. She was a wolf, not a dog. No matter how kind they may be, a wolf can never be trusted near a sheep.
>There was only one question to provide useful information.
“You said you came from the north.”
“From a place that gets much snow.”
“That means you have traveled far.”
“Far from your hunting grounds.”
“Is there something you flee?”
“Something you flee, or something you seek?”
>Hallu-Halla has to admit, this Pushmi-Pullyu was perceptive. Fitting for a beast of prey.
“A great predator came to our lands and attacked us.”
“A cat of great power and size. We got wounded, but the fool beast underestimated us.”
“We fought it off, but it got away. A friend healed us, and we’ve been tracking it down since.”
“We thought it could be nearby, when we sensed you two and heard your calls.”
>As if on cue, Bende-Bunde’s sheep began to bleat. Something had set them in a panic. Something was attacking their herd. They had been distracted and let their guard down.
>Bende-Bunde did not even bother to say goodbye. They bolted toward the source of the panic.

>It was a lion.
>It may have been white and bigger than any they had seen, but it was a lion. And it held a sheep in its mouth.
>One of Bende-Bunde’s sheep.
“The herd is scattered.”
“It shall take days to track down every Ram, Ewe, and Lamb.”
“We have failed them.”
“We shall not fail again.”
>The lion was after another Ewe.
>Bende-Bunde charged foreword.
>Bunde took lead and raised his sling.
>Swing once.
>Release.
>The stone found its mark on the jaw of the beast.
>It staggered, jaw broken, and Bende-Bunde got between it and the sheep. Bende beat their staff across its face, causing further damage.
>But it did not go down.
“It isn’t dead.”
“A mistake has been made.”
>The lion reared back to beat them with its claws. Bende-Bunde Braced themselves for the blow.
>It never came.
>A feather stuck from both its mouth and chest.
>The lion fell, thrashing in its death throes.
>Hallu-Halla stood with empty bows.
“A well placed rock and a mighty blow.”
“A lesser beast would have been felled by either.”
“You have respectable strength, Bende-Bunde.”
“Respectable strength and drive.”
>Bende-Bunde gave a shaky bow.
“You have saved our life.”
“We are in your debt.”
“We must offer you something.”
“You gave us our life, so let us give you something in return.”
“Our finest wool.”
“Our fattest sheep.”
“Our sheep?”
“Our Sheep!”
>Bende-Bunde ran over to the Ewe the beast was attacking.
>No injuries, just scared snorting.
“We must apologize, for we must retrieve our herd.”
“It will take several days, they had a big fright.”
“We still wish to reward you.”
“We live east in the Glenn.”
“Our master and his wife will treat you well.”
“If you are still there once we return, you may have best pick of the herd.”
“We thank you.”
“We must be off.”
>Bende-Bunde took off in the direction they saw the largest portion of the heard heading, the Ewe following close behind.
>>
>>63128167
>Hallu-Halla watched them leave and disappear over a hill.
“The hunt is over. Our prey is slain.”
“We will need to carve off its pelt. It would make a grand trophy.”
“A pelt that big will need to be tanned before being transported.”
“It will take several weeks. We will need a place to stay.”
“And now a place we have.”
>Halla pulled out a knife and began to carve into the great Snow Leopard.
>These would be some interesting weeks.

And done! I really hope I accurately conveyed the personalities of the Wolf and Ram. And most of all, I hope it was enjoyable to read!
>>
>>63128355
It was a very enjoyable read, thank you! I think the two pairs you chose weren't the easiest to bring together, but you used their differences to tell an interesting story of kin who share two very different points of view. I very much enjoyed seeing the conflict between Bende-Bunde's devotion to the idea of their creator's benevolence and Hallu-Halla's rejection of their creator's supposed disregard. It came out well and was a good addition to the world we've been building.
>>
>>63128443
Thanks! I chose them because of how simultaneously different and similar the lives of a Huntress and Shepherd could be. One is active, one is passive, but both are wholly devoted to the task they have taken. One thinks they see reasons their creator cares for them, and the other thinks they see reasons they do not, but both believe the creator is out there. It is what comforts them the most that causes them to believe what they believe.
Bende-Bunde likes to think that there is somebody watching out for them as they watch over their flock, while Hallu-Halla like to think every success they’ve had is due to the effort they put in. Neither are wrong, neither are right, they just are.
I also wanted to show that one wasn’t automatically stronger or weaker than the other due to their upbringing. It was their conviction in their chosen tasks that made them as they were.

>>63128745
Very good points. These threads have definitely shown me some of the most thoughtful work I've seen on /tg/ in some time.
>>
With 35 posts left before the thread begins to fall off the board, it might be wise to look toward the future. We'll be wanting to archive it on Sup/tg/ along with the others, certainly, and decide how to proceed from there. After three successful threads, I think it might be a good idea to give our Pushmi-Pullyu a rest for a week or at least until the weekend comes around again, in part to let us recharge our creative batteries and also to try and appear less obnoxious to other fa/tg/uys who might want to rain on the parade.

As much as I look forward to new content, I'd hate for us to drain or poison the well.
>>
>>63129899
Agreed.

We've produced more content on these threads over the past two week than most other threads produce in a year. We've got a good thing going here.

We should let this sit for at least five days to a week. Work on capping those greentexts, save the pastebin links, all that jazz. It would be great if we could get some more drawfaggotry in here, but that might be a tall order. I'm certainly going to be taking a look at those Pathfinder rules and maybe re-working them a touch.

Who knows, with the amount we've created it might be possible to make start an article on 1d4chan?
>>
>>63130060
I definitely think that we've got enough for a 1d4chan article. We already have several takes on the Pushmi's origins and history, a lot of discussion on their biology, personalities, and talents, a list of "established" Pushmi and their titles, and plenty of writing on several of our most notable examples. We could show the race's potential as peculiar NPCs and offer some sample stats.

>>63133516
I vote for the question of how they poop being a common joke in-universe meaning “Hell if I know”.
One that EVERY Pushmi-Pullyu has heard.
>>
>>63134214
>a single wildly unpopular romance novel with one as the main character.
Was actually well written until the Pushmi-Pullyu disagree on which guy to choose and saw themselves in half.
>>
It is crazy how the silliest concepts can be pushed to greatness when some passionate writefags get ahold of it.
>>
>>63135366
Yeah. We’ve made that silliness an acknowledged part of their character as a species and a source of mystery and bewilderment for those they meet. They really are fantastical.
>>
>>63135345
It was clear by that point that the author had written themselves into a corner and had to invoke some crazy bullshit to end the tale. While otherwise well-crafted, its main character and finale we’re not well received, most people calling it “silly” while some declared it “degenerate.”

>>63135301
That has, for better or worse, become a part of Pushmi Canon over the past few threads.

It's books like this which reenforce the harmful stereotype of pushmi-pullyus being fictional.

>>63134243
It's my story. I thought a screencap would be enough, but I can add it to my pastebin.
>>
>>63136843
That’s one of the things about them. They’re so fantastical and nonsensical that very few of the scholars that have heard of them believe they could be real, let alone worthy of study.
>>
>>63138382
Though the scholars who actually do come across one would have a bit of a freak-out and try to take as many notes as possible.
The world must not have that many blatantly magical animals for people to be so surprised by a Pushmi-Pullyu.
>>
>>63138659
At least no animals as BLATANTLY magical, like you said. This setting probably has your standard mid-range fantasy creatures, beasts almost but not quite like our own but bigger, stronger and a bit stranger. The Pushmi-Pullyu are in another class entirely, as they couldn’t even exist without being magical. Creatures of their magical caliber may only hail from a bygone age, places well-hidden and lands far, far away.
>>
>>63138659
Maybe it's a case of them being so rediculously magical? People hunt all kinds of strange beasts or search for unique creature. But a double-headed, fae born/god forged/wizard summoned, creature with two minds with a habit for singing and arguing with itself? That's the realm of lunacy right there.
>>
>>63141026
Exactly. They're not just magical, they're ridiculously over-the-top, fairytale magical.
>>
>>63142056
They are definitely more magical than any non-Fae I can think of, and Fae are like humans++. Dragons can just be giant winged lizards, and Unicorns are horned horses. The closest equivalent to their unusual figure would be with Chimeras or Manticores, and despite albeing a mishmash of creatures, even then those are formed in a relatively sensible biological shape.

The fact that Pushmi-Pullyus exist in opposition to how bodies are understood to function makes them uniquely special.
So basically the question of “How do they poop?” just brings to the forefold how unusual and noteworthy they are.
>>
>>63143216
I think that's one of the most interesting things about them. That they aren't really a "race" of creatures, but a collection of magical creations.

Hooray!

Though I think it was a mistake that the previous threads were tagged with “Monstergirls”, though that’s mainly because everything else I’ve seen with that tag tends to be fetish bait without attempt (or even desire!) to be anything else.

To take an example already brought up, the Chakats didn’t look bad design wise, and a feline variety of centaur would have been a good change of pace. But they were made to be nothing but “so friendly, so flawless, such fur” Sue trash that you could find anywhere.
They had something that could be cool, but was just made generic dumb.
