I've been rereading the web come Stand Still Stay Silent and was wondering if anyone had tried to put an rpg spin on it? Seems like some interesting settings and mechanics could come out of it
>>

What is this?
>>
>>63292437

Op, you came to the right place then. There was a SSSS rpg by the name of Vikingr a while back that made the rounds. I don't know what happened to it but I did download this core rulebook. I've never run it so I can't give you any impression.

I don't think this one is the latest, but there might be something archived on suptg
>>
>>63292516
It's a post apocalyptic webcomic set 90 years in the future where the only surviving nations are a few Icelandic ones. The comic focuses on a group of people venturing into the wilderness in search of ancient knowledge and technology

I just took a look at the website and it seems pretty cool. Interesting concept to just AU SSSS to keep all the same characters but tell a new story with them.
>>
>>63292437
It would have to focus on exploration and stealth. Very minor amounts of physical use magic, mainly runes and visions. There are spirit animals, but using them offensively puts you out of commission for days!
The combat system would need to deal with killing/escaping from swarms of small enemies, burning ambushing trolls in close quarters, and the “hide or die” mentality needed when dealing with giants.

The setting does lend itself to the adventure style most tabletop games have. And it doesn’t need to be only in scandinavia.
>players need to burn an area that held a troll nest for expansion.
>a sea troll attack has caused your group to wash up on the shores of the British Isles. Survive.
>an industrialist has been able to build a small blimp for scouting, and is looking for somebody to prove its effectiveness.
>there are lights on that shore. Electric lights. Is there an uncontacted city? Some unknown tech still providing power? The short journey might be worth the risk.
>>
>>63292782
Huh. d10 system. Never played that before. Wonder if it’s suited for the stealth style of play.
>>
>>63305201
I've played a bit of cyberpunk 2020 and found it fun. The creator of the system apparently wants to switch it to a d100 system

Show them the Slepinope. Or the page detailing the difference between Beasts, Trolls, and Giants. Creature design is good for drumming up interest.
If they like world design, show a picture of the Norse Tanker Transport Ship. Or, heck, the chainsaw train.
For magic, the cat spirit animal and the mindscape.
If none of those convince them to try the setting, nothing will.

Hey, people still remember this! I'm the anon who made it. I can't believe this thread went up, I just spent most of today doing my second draft of the system.

The first attempt is so thoroughly riddled with bad game design it's almost offensive. I've since changed it around to a far more workable d100 roll-under mechanic. A bit more generic perhaps, but far more functional.

I'll post the mew draft sometime in the next couple months. I'll make a thread about it and everything.

I'm really happy to see there's still interest!

I'll take questions about the second draft if anyone's got them.

For what it's worth, I decided to do a redesign from the ground up in order to make the game more focused on what SSSS is all about - Camraderie and Expeditions.

Currently, the game looks like a crunchier version of Delta Green. There's a much bigger focus on Character creation, and actual pathways to improve your character, be it via equipment, training, or contacts. It'll get further and further away from that once I take another whack at the Magic chapter!

Working on how best to do Bonds. I think forging relationship with your fellow vikingr is really important, but right now there isn't enough incentive to project problems onto them or your loved ones. I also don't want to turn this into a DG clone. The worlds have their similarities, but the stories are fundamentally different.

>>63347723
I hope you guys enjoy it when it's released! Thankfully, most of the flavor text is still useable.

>>63347821
More SSSS shilling is always a good idea. I think you'll like the changes. It won't be such a struggle to play this time around either, and I've made a lot of progress with character creation.

>>63348622
Yes. In-combat you won't suffer penalties (unless you get ripped open or suffer a fracture), but you're not going anywhere during the healing process, and some things can't be fixed until you're back in the Known World.
>>
>>63349606
Well if something was so bad that it could only be felt with in civilization, then that would be grounds for calling off the expedition.
Just a few extra suggestions:
Vehicles: There needs to be a section about exploration vehicle stats. Be they one-day riverboats, all terrain vehicles like the Cat Tank, or high quality mobile bases. The last of these would be the rarest of them all, and likely completely funded by a private firm. After all, you do not want to be exposed outside when trolls might be near.

Combat: the trolls and beasts in the comic prefer to either attack in swarms, or employ hit-and-run ambushes. Like the dusklings or the beast in the hospital. Though, the bigger the troll, the more likely they are to stick around and fight. The one that attacked the train and the blubber beast both felt powerful enough to go full offensive.

Ghosts: I’m not sure if you want to include these or not. The ones in the comic were basically an organized force that even trolls feared, and were dealt with through helping them pass on. I don’t think that they are even possible to stat, unless their combat is purely mental. If you can do that, Mages might be able to lead them to rest. All in all, this phenomenon would be the hardest to implement.
>>
>>63350522
I'm planning a vehicle section for sure. I want to provide players with the option to choose their vehicle, then kit it out and upgrade it as they gain experience.

As for the enemies, they are incredibly dangerous and have different methods of attack. In addition to a Bestiary, I'll provide GMs with a 'build-your-own-horror' toolkit in order to reflect the sheer variety and impossible mutations the Rash forces upon its victims.

Ghosts will indeed be difficult to implement, but they're a necessary part of the world, so they'll be in Vikingr. I will be statting them out, but dealing with them requires a Mage for sure. The only other option without one is to run. So if you see lots of dead frozen-over vikingr that looked like they just fell asleep (or your Team Cat starts going ballistic), the best decision is to turn around.
>>
>>63351425
For some vehicle traits, I’d say cheap (-durability. Chance of break down at 75% damage) Tanky (+durability -speed) Weaponized (has a turret/spiked cow pusher) Snug (less available room for sleep and loot) And Well Designed (easier repair)

For trolls, I would think Tall, Immobile, Waterlogged (fire has less effect), and Thick blubber (bullets have less effect) would be good additions to the traits you already have.

I don’t think ghosts should be that common an occurrence. They’d likely only be near the military bases and aid stations that happened to get some of the faulty cure. I’d say that they’re most concentrated in the Denmark area, given that the cure was first distributed there.
>>
Would Iceland be your main trading hub/starting point?
>>
>>63353214
Well, I would say that most of the expeditions would start in one of the capitals. That would be Reykjavík Iceland, Aurland Norway, Mora Sweden, and Saimaa Finland.

The map of the known world can be found here: http://sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=66
>>
>>63353860
Ah, I see. That would be neat, the possible differences in campaign depending on where you start.
>>
>>63305963
Top right what
>>
>>63355558
From one of Minna's Twitch streams I believe. http://sssscomic.com/mainimages/art/beach_day.jpg
>>
>>63354470
It would also depend on the places they are exploring.
I would say that the Denmark area has the most competition in terms of other Vikingr expoditions. Of course that would also mean they would be the most picked over. A useful place to go for players who are a bit familiar with the world.
The riverside towns in Finland and Norway might be of interest to those who wish to go on low risk grab-and-run searches for valuables. Those would be useful as one-shots to introduce players to the world and mechanics of the game.
For experienced “into the unknown” campaigns, there is Russia, Prussia, Germany, and the British Isles to explore.
>>
>>63352549
Good point on the ghosts. This is mostly what I had in mind for them as well, although I think there'll be plenty of ghosts all over Europe, lingering on due to the swift and horrific apocalypse that was the Rash.

>>63353214
As >>63355740 said, the launching location would be primarily determined by the ultimate destination of the Expedition. Iceland would primarily be a staging ground for amphibious-borne Expeditions into England, the Orkney and Faroe Islands, and Ireland. The base at Oresund would indeed be the major vikingr hub, as I imagine that even in Year 111, most of Copenhagen and Sjaelland has been picked over of its most valuable loot, but Jylland is still up for grabs.

Mora and some bordering Swedish colonies would be decent launching points for Expeditions into the hell-nest of Stockholm, as well as Poland and the Baltic States. Saimaa would undoubtedly be used for pushing into Russia and the prize of glittering St. Petersburg...
>>
>>63341603
Iirc, she said she would avoid plot lines involving non Nordica after that to avoid offending people.
>>
>>63342100
We'll hold you too that
>>
Not to derail the thread, but I always imagined Egypt as someplace else that would have survivors.
>>
>>63356201
Well I would say that the kind of powerful ghosts in SSSS would be unique to those from the faulty cure. Those are the kind that would react most violently to the presence of humans. The other types of ghosts would likely be the standard restless spirits that make you constantly feel uneasy. Less “angrily ripping out your soul” and more “begging to help them move on.”

I can’t believe I hadn’t thought of this before, but I just realized that the world you made in Vikingr would also give rise to a new job for cats.
Of course, a trained cat would be desirable on any journey to the silent world. Their use as sentries and checking for hidden beasts would be indispensable for an expedition. Heck, some of them might even become maskots of Vikingr groups.
>>
>>63356580
If there are, it will be a LONG time before anybody in Scandinavia can contact them.
>>
>>63356989

I kind of doubt it. It dosen't get cold enough to kill trolls, there are no good geographical spots that are easy to defend, and the bulk of the population live in citys [troll traps] like most middle eastern country's.

I wish Minna was more /k/ knowledgeable. With all the lakes and rivers in Finland I would be stoked if they had a flotilla of Monitor class ships on the rivers (especially US Vietnam style monitor class ships).

Any time / source on this quote?

Basically its SJW's being SJW's. Minna wanted to write a Scandinavian story. For the past 15 years the area has had a innodation of "brown" people. So SJW's are pissed that 70%+ of on screen people are not brown. Most of them don't want to assimilate to the culture of their new county (so detracts from telling a Scandinavian story). Also Minna is....well...a social autist. So her lack of hetro love is reflected in not wanting to do any "relationships" in her story out side of hetro's making family tree offspring (gay =/= baby). So the lack of LGBT'LMNOP pisses of the militant gay's. For all proposes her characters as written are asexual (identify as nothing) except for plot birthers.

Just as a footnote not long ago I heard a story on NPR about the Sami people. They were the indigenous people of the Scandinavia area before the Vikings and other groups colonized the area. They are fighting for more recognition and rights but to semi-quote a member of the Sami people when dealing with SJW's "you can't be indigenous, your white".

P.S I want to cuddle Minna and give her social autistic self the love she deserves.

The issues i see with basing a game on this great comic is really all around magic. While we recently got to see some of it in action we really don't know much about it besides some vague things. Nothing is defined on how it works. All we do know boils down to.

1. Different set of God worshipping gives entirely separate powers
2. In that vein, different caster types are able to work together somewhat especially in the dream world but different rules apply to them there.
3. You have to born with the gift there is no just learning it. Though being taught how to use it is an important
4. Runes cost nothing physically. Just time. We have yet to see a professionally made one work. But amateur ones were strong enough to cause trolls to balk during an attack.
5. Spells are physically exhausting. While we haven't seen much it feels more exponential then linear. And real world being more costly than the dream world.*
6. The gods of your nation appear to be the only ones who can empower you, no getting stuff from the neighbor as it were.

* we have seen by my recollection 3? Real world spells that actually did alot. 2 of which I would say were equivalent to say a decent fireball. Both of those knocked out their casters. They got hit so hard they were both out for long periods of time. Long enough people unfamiliar with casters ( which leads me to believe mages are in fact very rare as most people seemed to have no clue) started to wonder if they were ever going to wake up.

So with these thoughts im curious to see how the people trying to put it to rules do it. That's not even considering the fact science can clearly interact with the magic in this universe. As we saw what a scientific vaccine did to its test subjects of the magic based disease.

Luckily as the party has returned to civilization and turns out to have an untrained mage with them we might get some insight with his training. Even if it is for just one countries mage type

Samis are actually not indigenous.
Sure, they have been oppressed by the Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian and Russian states and were prohibited from practicing their culture, but they weren't first in the area. The Germanic-speakers came before them.
And pure Samis are far from white, only ones that are very mixed with Swedes and Norwegians are.

I just noticed that the Shetland Islands are called Scotland on the map.
That would require that there are any Scots left who live on the island.
Considering the island is a part of the Silent World on the first map, that doesn't seem likely.
I went ahead and changed it to Hjaltland, the Norse name for the islands.

I mean, the demographics make sense if you actually know the first thing about Scandinavia. Granted, I can only speak personally for Norway, but the VAST majority of immigrants here live in Oslo and a few other major cities. In SSSS, the surviving communities are the small and remote ones, at most they'd have maybe one or two immigrant families.

>>63358501
>>63360225
>They were the indigenous people of the Scandinavia area before the Vikings and other groups colonized the area.
>The Germanic-speakers came before them.
Eeh, it's complicated. True, the Sami are not the first people to settle in "Scandinavia", but they're effectively the indigenous people of the areas they lived in. There really wasn't much competing for territory since the different peoples had very different ways of living, so the Sami had the tundra pretty much to themselves.

It wasn't until the 19th and 20th century, with the rise of nationalism and race theory and improved transportation, that they started being actively suppressed, culminating in some truly nasty eugenics programs aimed at wiping out their culture. Banning their language, kidnapping their kids to put them through norwegian boarding schools, sterilization projects... it's not a good look on our history.
>>
>>63360863
That's not completely true.
The ancestors of todays Swedes lived as far north as Jämtland, Västerbotten and Ångermanland since the bronze age. I'm not completely sure about Norway but as far as I remember they lived as far north as Lofoten during the same time.
It wasn't until the 1500s that the Southernmost Sami began living in Jämtland, and they didn't reach Dalarna until the 1890s.

The original, pre-medieval Sami territory in Sweden was only Lappland and parts of Norrbotten.

The map of Sápmi used by Sami nationalists (the one you posted) is a bit unfair and also dishonest.

I think magic being a fundamental in the game and the universe is important. But because of the way that magic works in SSSS, it basically forces "multiclassing" if you will. Spell-slinging doesn't exist without physical consequences, and runes are time consuming to make and have the potential consequences of just being avoided entirely. And if someone were to play a character like Onni, they would need to realize that doing one big spell puts your character out of commission for days at a time. I'm not sure how this would translate into dice and a table top format, but I think its important to the setting at least.

>>63364318
There are some engines these days that aren't as picky; so I actually didn't question much when I was reading the comic. Just assumed that they brought enough gas and stored it in the back of the vehicle.

>>63364941
The use of cats gives my own cat an excuse to be on the table while we play so I think he will be fine with it. We saw cat adoption happen in the comic so I might throw some cat plot hooks into my playgroup while they are out exploring.

Of course, magic works differently between the two styles of mages. Icelandic mages are defensive, using runes and prophetic visions. these don't tire them out. They'd be useful in protection and discovering unknown history.
Finish mages are offensive, casting spells and sensing spirits. Of course their spells are very much in the vein of "glass canon". They cause massive damage to the opponent but also hurt the caster. They'd mostly be useful to innately sense spirits and trolls.

>>
>>63366744
That would require those places to have radios, be on the correct frequency, and strong enough to both transmit and receive those signals at those distances. Those aren't exactly common.
>>
>>63366925
For a place as advanced as Iceland and Sweden, it would probably be pretty high on the priority list to have radios broadcasting outwards on a set frequency and having people at home trying various frequencies and seeing if they pick anything up.
Powerful transmitting equipment can be salvages from the cities.
>>
>>63366925
>Radios
All the capitals and larger settlements should have these just to facilitate long-range communication.
>frequency
You'd imagine at least Iceland would be scanning all the standard frequencies. We "waste" money on SETI nowadays, so them having their own Search for Old World Civilization project should get enough funds to at least run a basic scanner setup.
>signal strength
Power requirement for Iceland shouldn't be too bad with all the geothermal energy.

Finding there's other people out there would be a powerful morale booster even if they can't reach them right now due to sea trolls etc.
>>
>>63366989
True, but those broadcasts would mostly be a repeating signal just to say “we are here”, not actual people speaking.
For receiving, It would also be difficult to determine where that signal is even coming from. For all we know there might be radio operators who have gotten a “we’re here” signal but haven’t been able to trace its source.

Or they could play a recorded message on the hour (we are at x y z coordinates / we are x nation living in z what's up) and leave the rest of the time waiting for a response
>>
>>63367368
A looping recorded message on shortwave radio is most likely, but I highly doubt that they would give out exact locations and their status. People are always scared that somebody will take what they have.
Also, shortwave has had less and less use in recent years due to the reliance on satellites and the internet. With the future tech in the world of SSSS, the use of shortwave would be limited to 100+ year old junk broadcasting from Iceland with the hope somebody else has both the equipment to receive it and another 100+ year old broadcaster able to pick through the screams of the damned.
Yeah, the rash has caused a lot of static from the spirits screaming in agony over what they’ve become.
Long story short, there are almost certainly other people out there, but they’d be really hard to both find and reach.
>>
>>63367697
Oh man I can imagine an entire plot line revolving around the group hearing some short range radio signals, only to find a long dead group of people with the equipment still running from a water generator. and then ghosts
>>
>>63368058
As far as we know, most ghosts found their way onwards by themselves after a few years.
Ghosts remaining for 90 years was completely unheard of and was probably exclusive to the ones in Denmark, who've now gone to heaven.

The Grosslings are constantly blasting demonic speech through all radio communications in-universe. And as we learnt all too recently, pretty much every Grossling has the ability to disable mages or unskilled sensitives with a few words.

Having open radio communications is pretty much lethal in SSSS.
>>
>Emil having to stay at the camp and watch while the more experienced cleansers burn stuff down

>>
>>63368475
Those ghosts were the result of a faulty cure, so I don’t think they were the only ones.
Even if they were, there are other paranormal dangers to be faced. Like that troll spirit that tried to control Emil into walking into its home so it could kill him.
>>

All evil things speak with the same scratchy black speech in the setting. The trolls/grosslings are constantly doing it, but evil spirits (like Sleipnope or whatever the fuck that thing that tried to drown Lalli was) also speak the same way. It's one of the clear signs that seems to link them all together.

The Dusklings and that one giant attempted to use it on Emil to get him to come to them/open a way in for them so that they could kill him.

Apparently the sea creatures (infected whales and the like) are absolutely terrifying.
>>
>>63292437
Anybody who plays a scouting character would be leaving the group rather frequently and would need to be optimized for stealth and speed. In fact, the avoiding of fights would be more important than actually winning fights, I’d say. Like finding a way to set Rash beats on each other, or using a flamethrower to keep them at bay while you run.

Also, Icelandic mages would have to deal with any of those restless spirit things that exist in the water within that dream spirit world of theirs.
All things considered, outright combat with any beast should be something to avoid unless the creature is certain to be alone.
Are there any good examples of roleplay games based on stealth?

>>63365469
>There are some engines these days that aren't as picky
And there are some engines that are not that picky at all. During the cold war all sides knew the Europe front was going to be a clusterfuck hairball. So many military vehicles were multifuel. Most US vehicles preferred Diesel, but could run on kerosene, JP8 (jet fuel), vegetable oil, or in a pinch gasoline (this is a last resort and you needed to mix it something like 1 quart motor oil to 5 gallon gas).

Well, I would say that there would need to be a lot of breathing room. The yes/no do or die style of scouting and stealth wouldn’t work.
For scouting I would say that the rolls would represent how well they are able to translate what they scouted to the map. A high roll would be perfect directions, low roll a “danger: yes”, and a middle roll would have some misjudgments on the size of the paths.
Not sure about stealth though. I think instead of hidden/not hidden it would be how aware you are of the other beats presence, and how aware it is if you. That would work in tandem with scaring it off, distracting it, or pulling a “summon bigger fish” move while diving into a trash can.

We see a Giant (or at least, a really really really large Troll) around the end of the chapter where Lalli and Emil are cast adrift on the sea. Lalli had to fully expend himself just to cut the damn thing in half and keep it from crushing them to death, and that likely didn't actually kill it judging by its sheer size.

It was also continuously spawning lesser trolls from its bulk, which were more than unpleasant.

>>63372985
On, right. I believe the think the set on the Dusklings was a giant.

Since this thread is still alive and people are interested, have an in-progress draft of the revised character sheet. It's still missing stuff (and is far from final), but this is the fancier version for people who like printing their sheets out on nice paper. There'll be a utilitarian and printer-friendly version once I've finalized things.

I tried to make a quick Call of Cthulhu oneshot in the setting. Plan was to have a group attempt to find the Seed Bank in Svalbard or perhaps scout out the "haunted" Soviet mining towns while more experienced explorers loot the vault. I have a modified CoC roll20 sheet, was leaning on using the character creation rules of World War Cthulhu to act as the creation process.

I still have it on standby. Debating on making it a full campaign where they get stranded on Svalbard during arctic night and have to wait until spring for a rescue attempt.

So since people made maps for other surviving cultures, did they write up anything actually about the cultures? The old gods they went back to (as that seems to be a theme), their own unique survival strategies etc.

It's impossible to really tell. The Grosslings all vary in size and shape and some can be made out of only one person whilst still being utterly physics-defying (see pic).

Though that dragon is likely multiple people forcibly fused together, yes.
>>

>I could see the Russians creating geographical barriers by just dumping radioactive materiel over a large area.
Why would they do that? How would it help to isolate vast forests, tundras, swamps and wilderness where millions of infected beasts roam and no man lives to keep them in check? How would it achieve anything? You would have easier time creating radioactive Hadrian's Wall in Great Britain.

Okay, this page is pretty close to what I mean about stealth being about awareness. The troll sees them directly, but Lalli is only able to sense their presence instead of actually catching sight. And even though the troll sees them, it doesn’t instantly attack.
I basically see stealth ranging from “You are alert” to “something’s nearby, possibly watching you” to “there is a beast right in front of you!”

Local nests were destroyed, beasts and trolled were killed. The area is relatively safe, there are no big monsters roaming around for the next several seasons but vermin beasts pose real danger of infection. Infected may return and create new nests after winter.

The notion that the Sami are somehow more ingenious to scandinavia and Finland than the Scandis and the Finns is a crock of fucking shit. All of these peoples have been living in those lands for at least 2 thousand fucking years, if not more, it is just that the sami lived in the most ass end of nowhere northern parts of those lands due to only those sami tribes that retained their hunter gatherer/nomadic lifestyles avoiding being absorbed to the agrarian populations of the more southern parts of those lands.
It is not like an army of Finns and Scandis came and conquered the poor sami or shit like that. The larping about muh "oppressed indiginous peeple" the sami do here in Finland, as if they were some indians, is unironically making me fucking hate those reideer fuckers when previously I was wholly neutral towards them. The Finnic tribes were just as fucking "oppressed" in our history and unlike the sami, all of out traditions were basically fucking destroyed by Christianity. The Sami can thank their fucking pagan deities that by the time civilization reached them it was ruled by more liberal values that did not seek it prudent to extreminate their faith and traditions completely.

Minna has said that sea-giant equivalents (called "Leviathans") exist, so it's confirmed that some ungodly nightmares of fused sea creatures exist. Wouldnt be surprised if that thing that tried to drown Lalli was a spirit manifestation of such an entity.
