A call went out. Silence on holy mars. The engines go quiet, the fabricators cool, and the servitor choirs become hushed. On this day, an old and loyal friend of humanity is found. The Magos lovingly brushes away the crimson dust, his mechanical hands still trembling as they reach out to embrace the long-lost rover. "Welcome home, little one." He rasps in binary "We have so missed you."

To the Temple of Restoration they carried the loyal friend of mankind. Borne aloft on a palanquin rested on the steady the shoulders of consecrated servitors and safely ensconced behind a cohort of Praetorian was the rover brought to the Temple, trailed by a procession of the faithful who cried hymns of thanks and jubilation to the Omnissiah.

With the most delicate of brushes did the Artist-Magos of the Temple of Restoration lovingly sweep away the dust of mars one mote at a time, leaving not so much as a scratch or a spec of filth. With sacred oils were the rover's solar panels buffed to a shine, and with the utmost care was it's wiring repaired. Nothing but the finest was acceptable for the venerable Child of the Omnissiah who they had been blessed to find. Nothing but the finest could possibly convey their gratitude for it's service to mankind.

Day and Night they worked to the sound of the pilgrims who flocked to the temple from across Mars to venerate the Rover, until their task was complete and the great friend of mankind was whole.

This just made me realize, the Mechanicus likely has a small museum of sorts on Mars that has all of the exploration craft, manned, and unmanned, we've sent there, that they've been able to recover. Knowing them, they've probably also recovered many if not all of the currently active/ended heliocentric craft.

Countless millions stood on either side of the massive streets of the Forge-City. Many in scarlet hoods, standing side-by-side by forge-menials and Imperial representatives. Even the Skitarii had been allowed attendance, standing in perfect rows along the roadside, a stark contrast the milling crowds behind.

Great bells tolled somewhere down the street, and the crowds stopped. The road quieted to shifting of dust in the breeze. Even the noosphere, usually blistering with information exchange, grew silent.

A great procession of Techpriests and decorated Skitarii came first, heads bowed, hands held in signs of reverence and prayer, each whispering prayers of thanks and praise in binary. Next came lumbering constructs, their vox-hailers singing out raw code, code which when viewed through a noosphere lense created a sweeping portrait of countless hands working on a lone construction.

Next and finally was a grav-platform, rolling silently over the ancient road, and upon it was a humble, simple drone. Crude hydraulics, solar-panels, and primitive cameras all. Stained in martian red and ageless damages. Upon this humble thing were billions of eyes, either in person or captured on vid-feed and sent throughout the cosmos. All worshippers of the machine god watched it's grand procession through the streets of mars.

Even those on Holy Terra watched with a quiet interest.

Beneath the silence, one thought was common among every soul so lucky to see it's blessed form. This small, utilitarian...thing. This drone, was the reason they were here. Because so long ago, there existed a people who valued and loved knowledge and constructed such beings to travel to once-distant worlds in that righteous pursuit. It was sent out from it's loving masters into the great unknown for this goal, and was lost. Cold and alone so far away from those who loved it.
>>
>>64642377
Now, in the custody of a people impossibly distant from those original makers, it would be cared for, doted on, and cherished forevermore.

Magos centuries old, nameless forge-workers, mighty Skitarii warriors and humble Techpriests all lowered their heads, some took knees, many held out hands in prayer.

"Thank you." was their message. "Thank you for your travel, and your perilous journey into the unknown. For without you, our way of life would not exist. Our lives would be without purpose, and this planet would not be the seat of power and knowledge it is. All of this, our triumphs, our love, our home, is because of you."

"Thank you" they whispered.
"For this Opportunity."

That is quite antithetical to Mechanicus philosophy. Men are merely elements of the knowledge-engine that is mankind, useless and incapable when taken out of it's context. To praise and venerate them is arrogant heresy - one glorifies The Whole and it's embodiments, like Omnissiah or God Emperor.

>>
>>64645753
When I said "99.999% chances of being beyond recovery" I was being VERY generous, we're at like... 1/10^30 chance to find it only damaged to an extent that would allow it to be recovered and potentially restorable, and the least damage you expect, the least chances there'll be for it to happen, and those chances decrease exponentially as the percentage of undamaged state increases...

When you think about it, and realize that all that we know and created until today more likely than not never gonna survive till the 40k area in-setting in any way, shape or form to a state where it can be recovered... or in any state at all, you really get an existential crisis creeping on you. (at least for me)

We have found the machine whom was to gaze at the holy mars for life without human DNA. We shall construct temples of gazing to find what you have missed, little one." Faustinus watched from high above the martian streets, eyes organic and mechanical trying their best to absorb every detail.

From the Titans singing out their praise to their comically undersized predecessor, to the Skitarii marching in patterns of binary down the road, every picture captured from his team of servo-skulls produced a portrait of equal parts regimented ceremony, and unrestrained jubilation.

His emotional cores returned pride, awe, and wonder. But when he looked at that small rover, he paused.
His emotional cores reported a complex mix of emotions, a jumbled mess of chemical signatures and info-tags that gave the ancient magos pause. Were his augments malfunctioning? Had something gone wrong?

He quickly ran self-diagnostics.
No, nothing was wrong.

He hesitated for a moment. A small tag of fear appeared below the others. Then he let down the walls keeping his emotional cores from flooding his mind.

His breath caught in his throat, his pace quickened, tears formed in his remaining biological eye for the first time in centuries. He was overwhelmed by it, a prisoner too it, as he looked upon the ancient and damaged drone so many floors below.

Subdominus Keprah, ever at his side, raised a titanium hand to his shoulder. "Is everything alright Archmagos?" She inquired through their private Noosphere channel.

"Y-yes. Subdominus." He said with his own mouth instead of a binaric speaker, surprised at how difficult it was to speak.

"Yes Subdominus, everything is alright. I am simply..." he paused for a moment in wonder at the beauty of the moment.

"I am simply very happy."

Itinerantur Regii marched.

Since the tragedy of Mars had been undone, it had marched.

Others of the Titanicus were tasked with this sacred procession as well, taking their turns in this walk of honor before returning to their forgeworlds, but Itinerantur walked the very center of this line.

Its course was brief, but circuitous. Doubling back on itself at a number of manufactory-cathedra at some points in the route, marching for kilometers at a time in others.

Its pace was slow, the god-machine only taking a few ponderous strides every month.

Across the way, the Warlord would bow in reverence to the great craters it had seen in the infancy of human advancement. Endeavor. Victory. So many names long-lost in the aeons, but some now indelible, as much a part of Mars as the red soil.

At last, at the culmination of fifteen years of the march, Itinerantur stopped.

Seeing a god-machine brought low was a sight nobody forgot.

To see one kneel?

It was a feat some claimed impossible, others balking at the idea of it.

But Itinerantur knelt, its massive cannons held to its sides, head compartment bowed in sacred observation.

Here. At the Basilica Meridiani.

Well, Skitarii as a collective term for the tech guard is not a real word as such, but a twisted form of 'Secutarii', the ancient Martian troops fighting alongside the titans, established over ten millennia.

The cult Mechanicus states that a man's worth is calculated by the sum of his knowledge. Great inventors, academics, and thinkers would all be considered saints to the Omnissiah's children. There's countless quotes that state as much in the Mechanicus codexes and video games. Those who made key discoveries in particular would be held with a great reverence to the admech, much like the Ecclessiarchy treats their saints.

>OP here, I'm really touched by how much everybody has been inspired by this. Let's see if I can keep up, yeah?

Magos Albus tapped his metallic digits impatiently against the cold duraplast console, his face like a withered gourd, illuminated by the dull green of the Gnoospheric console. The sacred forge of his forefathers was silent for the first time in millenia, and he stared at the source of this silence, marched across his screen like some conquering hero. A bitter sneer served to fold his weathered face further, a twitch of frail meat that he allowed himself only because tamping it down distracted him from the roiling cauldron of frustration churning in his chest.
A metallic clatter ripped him from his seething, replacing frustration momentarily with a sharp annoyance. Tendrils groaned and whirred beneath his robes as a mechadendrite turned its skull-headed tip to the source of the noise. A single metal eye focused in on initiate Azir, a young lad of dark skin and bright blue eyes, barely a decade into his training, the elder magos dragged a clawed digit across the metal console.
"Where," Albus wheezed, "Are you going, boy?"
"Honored magos, Th-the forgemaster general he-"
"I know damn well what he said!" Albus' voice took on a screeching, distorted quality. The forest of metal tendrils raising him a full three feet over Azir's head. The boy looked to him like a mouse wrapped in the coils of a python. Albus froze, recognizing the look and slowly lowering his frame to eye-level with the boy.
"...Azir." He wheezed "You are an intelligent boy. In your first year you had mastered the seventy-five cathecisms of the rite of the lasgun."
"I had a good teacher, Honored Magos." Azir bowed to the old man.
"Of course you did." Albus felt pride well in the cavity where once his heart lay. "So then tell me, boy, where are you going?"
"To see the return of the Lost Child, Honored Magos."

"Lost child." A puff of stale, iron-scented air escaped the mass of tendrils beneath Albus' ruin of a nose. "I figured you better than that, boy."
Azir tilted his head in confusion. "Sir?"
"We are at war, boy. As we speak, the cunning xeno plots our downfall. The Antipath claws at the edges of our resolve, seeks to suborn our machines and minds to its dark purpose. Worlds burn! Flesh and steel shredded in the myriad jaws of beasts and daemons that would see our blessed factories run cold, our titans made silent, our armor shattered! Where do we stand, boy!?"
"S-sir, we stand in a-" Before he could finish, Albus rose from his seat, the hems of his robes fluttering as coiling serpents of metal lifted him upward on a pulpet of steel.
"It is a factory which tends to the rite of assembly, a factory which crafts the Bolter, the Hellgun, and the Plasma cannon, weapons used by Skitarii, by Astartes, by the Legions! Weapons that could save the lives and knowledge of so many, weapons that remain un-built! And for what, boy? For an ancient, obsolete thing! We have built rhinos, baneblades, and Titans! TITANS, Boy! What use to our species is this...this trinket?!"
The heat in Albus' chest seemed to glow through the remains of his throat, filling each breath with contemptuous cinder and ash. Azir's back was pressed to the side of a great fabricator whose spirit regarded the initiate momentarily before returning to its rest.
Azir mustered his breath, his lungs yet unreplaced. He looked to the eyes of his master, and spoke.

"Do you remember where they found me, Sir?" Azir's voice was soft, his augmented throat tightening.
Albus let his raised shoulders lower just slightly. His mind sifted through his visual records, the cortical stack in his brain shuffling through a billion images until it found the image of a young child, no older than four. The patina of dust and ash on his face cut through in streaks by tears. A pair of metal hands, Albus' own, gently lifting the boy from the remains of the bunker, shielding his eyes from the carnage with his scarlet cloak as the dust-choked sky let astartes drop-pods fall like white-hot tears.
"Of course, my boy..." Albus allowed the pangs of that memory wash over him waves on an eroded cliff-face. Stoic, but still damaged in a trillion little ways by it with each passing day.
"Scipio Delta." Azir noted.
"Aye, I recall...It was the Necrons. I was just an engineseer then..."
"Everything was gone," Azir continued. "Our cities, our art, our songs... our loved ones."
"We had to-"
"I know, sir. I'm not blaming you, or the ones who decided to enact the Final Rite of Bombardment. I don't remember much from those days, Sir, but I remember seeing my world, so distant when it burned it looked like an ember dancing on the wind. Golden red for a brief moment before going cold and black."
"Why are you telling me this, boy? I was there!" Albus' voice hitched in his throat.
"Because, sir, my greatest regret, the thing that cuts deep inside me on those nights I can't rest is that I have nothing from Scipio. Nothing to remind me of where I was from, No songs, no stories, no faces, not even trinkets, sir."
Albus felt the tendrils propping him up slowly recede, lowering him to the floor.
"We need to remember, sir. If it's good or bad or obsolete or painful, we need to remember. IF we don't know where we've been, sir, how can we know where we're going? How can we know we're getting better?"

For a moment, Albus said nothing. Slowly, he turned back to the emerald glow of his console. Azir paused, approaching the old magos to extend a bronze-plated hand on the old man's shoulder.
"Sir?"
"Be off with you, boy." Albus croaked wearily.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes. You initiates don't get many rest days. I'd have killed for one like this when I was your age."
"Thank you, sir." Azir bowed genially.
"And, Azir?"
"Yes, sir?"
"Thank you. It is not often a teacher learns from his student."
"Of course, sir." Azir recalled that pride led to arrogance, a failing of the flesh, but permitted himself a brief indulgence in it as he strode to the door. The ancient steel hatch hissed open, filling the dark factory with golden and crimson light, distant cheers echoing like the patter of soft rain.
Albus basked for a moment in the warmth before the door closed itself once more. He returned to his work, but found his fingers hovering just above the sacred runes of the console, suspended as if by some force.
He pulled his digits away from the console and rose from his seat.
His myriad tendrils ferried him to the hatch, which opened once more, letting the pale and withered remains of his flesh feel the warmth of the sun.
From somewhere deep within he felt a song emerge, like a shimmering fish rising to the surface of the sea.
Beneath the nest of tendrils and motors beneath his eyes, he began to softly sing.
"I'll be seeing you
In all the old familiar places..."

It's all propaganda.
Your non-propaganda entertainment options are:
>Shanking a mutant
>Sex in the missionary position while holding hands, for the purpose of procreation
>Anything done in service of Chaos (especially Slaanesh)
>Purging
>>
>>64659983

Oh, fiction exists in the Imperium, though I'm sure it's more limited in subject matter than ours (no interspecies romances or similar, just for starters) and I imagine a lot of it is planet-specific. Video games specifically are a good question though, aside from a few fringe beliefs I don't know if the Mechanicus would consider games a worthy use.
>>
>>64647096
The taming of the Dragon would be the ultimate punchline to what was once a doomsdayclock
>>
>>64642741
Nikolai Tesla and Marie Curie have relic options in 7e. Not a small leap to believe that other scientists have remains or oddities that the Mechanicum saved.
>>
>>64660120

I personally imagine the mechanicus has video games for a couple of reasons. One, they could serve as training/evaluation tools a let's give the adepts a simulated skitarii legion or explorator fleet or forge and see what they do with it kind of thing.

Second reason is braging rights. Magos could use simulators to try and outdo each other without actual real world costs, so it's a good way for two tech priests to throw down as it were.

That's just my thought process on the matter.

Realistically though, I think there wouldn't even be possible to flat out lose. It would just roll back to a latest save state. Or better, even if the player fails, the game tells that the imperium rolled in and roflstomped everything, but the player is at fault for incompetence.

There even can be various Imperial-themed factions, like guard from that world, guard from another, marine chapters, Navy battlefleets, admech forge-worlds and so on. No need to make bad guys playable.

I can imagine a story where some empowered agent of the Emperor goes in to try and re-enact the Sealing of the Dragon within Mars before it awakens... only to discover it's been awake for over a millennia and quietly living as an aspect of the Machine God, beyond sealing by anyone other than the Emperor himself and entirely unneeding of such an act. The vast figure of might and power willingly lying amongst the steel and ceramite that tie it down to Mars as it's children play on it's scales and claws, the once-god murmuring secrets of science and wisdom.
A real sucker-punch too to the Emperor's own acts of the past. Turns out the strongest weapon against this C'Tan wasn't psychic might or worldly destruction, but softer chains of love and respect it would willingly don and tighten itself.

Though there are "ambassadors" for the AdMech who look more human than most to not put off Lords and Rogue Traders and stuff to ask for more funding and maybe a moon or two. Presumably they'd look hot because hey, you might as well get some gene-splicing done if you're not going to cover your skin in ceramite.

>IG
Skill trees for higher ammo capacity, bonus damage and accuracy with lasguns, some extra health but not too much, probably a bonus with grenades. Action skill to call in help or a vehicle? Could get a tank for a minute, summon reinforcements or an airstrike.

>Psyker
Action skill is dangerous for her to use, skills throughout her trees to reduce the chances of blowing herself up, even as others raise the odds to expand on her power. Probably starts as Smite but skill trees can add a bunch of other effects for AoE, ongoing energy damage, stun, frightening enemies, etc. Mix in other powers as skills like Psychic Barrier for extra hp.

>Ogryn
Action skill like Brick or Krieg, increased speed, massive melee damage and some sort of thrown weapon for range. Skill trees are all about being bigger, tougher, stronger and meaner. Also negating recoil from firing weapons.

>Inquisitor
Skill trees based on the Ordos Malleus, Xenos and Hereticus, mostly determining what enemies you get bonuses against, regardless of your weapons. Can take over enemy vehicles and gets an action skill to Dominate an enemy, skills can make this Terrify nearby enemies too.

>Sororitas
Everything burns

>Mechanicus
Very tough with some self repair abilities and buffs to all their gear by knowing the proper prayers. Increased damage, accuracy and reduced recoil because machine spirits love them. Canticle action skill, maybe Shroudpsalm?

>Callidus
Action skill temporarily imitates an enemy unit, making them all lose track of you until you attack or the time runs out. Skills extend duration, give bonus damage on attacks from disguise and can leave enemies stunned with confusion when you revert.

>Astartes
Heavy armor, heavy weapons, enhanced everything. Not balanced against other classes, just a fun chance to wade through the game as a rather OP character. Too OP with a multiplayer team but necessary to play solo past the endgame. Action skill depends on Chapter?

Because, all jokes and mechanicus fun aside, the pursuit of knowledge is a righteous one. It transcends race, gender, and all the other petty, useless shit we humans argue about. It's what matters more than anything else we have.

And 15 years ago, a group of people got together to pursue that righteous cause, and built something to do it in their stead.
This little thing they built has no thoughts or will of its own. It's objectively a lifeless tool built of steel and silicon.

But it's a symbol of that pursuit, an icon built to satisfy wondrous curiosity, and now it's gone. Mankinds curious child is dead, and we're left with one less eye to peer into the cosmos with.

IG I see being a combination of Axton and Roland only with more lasers. Action skill, I dunno. Vehicle one probably wont work though since there'd be plenty of points where he's in a building or a place otherwise unsuitable to vehicle use.

Psyker could have a mix of minor warp skills in addition to gun-play. A Perils of the Warp meter builds with each use of Warp skills, and the higher it gets the more self damage the player takes. Screen effect would be shadows intruding on the player's view. After a certain point of it, the meter overloads, the screen blacks out, the player dies, and the rest of the team has to put down the Daemon that just showed up. Skills and gear to slow and mitigate this are available, but they have drawbacks (ex, a skill could cut the Perils growth rate by 25%, but players take additional damage from all sources)

Ogryn, I wholeheartedly agree. Beating the shit out of enemies for the Emperor is pretty much perfect for one.

Inquisitor works well. Action skill, I dunno, again, vehicle-based one wouldn't work for indoor/underground areas.

Sororitas would be faith, swords, and setting shit on fire. Action skill buffs all allies and nerfs enemies (DoT, slowdowns, etc), and grants all allies health regen. At high enough levels Her fire damage would bypass all elemental resistances. Stacking kills would build the Faith stacks, which would further amplify Faith and Flame based effects. At high enough stacks she starts alternating between prayers to the Emperor and hurling obscenities at her enemies.

Mechanicus, that works too.

Callidus, I dunno, maybe Vindicare, Eversor, or Culexus would work better.

Astartes, maybe strip him of his gear and armor then put him on a 1-man penance crusade. Gets the Fury meter from WH40K Space Marine as the action skill.

/And what the fuck is going on with my browser? I got shit that will intermittently load (gstatic, which includes captcha, i and s.4cdn occasionally, etc) and its annoying.
>>
>>64676014
IG skill should be calling in an artillery strike. Explain it away with orbital support maybe.
One tree should be Commissar, providing benefits to allies and being psuedo-support.

DLC is Jokearo, their special is to create a new weapon. Downside is you can't pick up dropped weapons but instead "scrap" them to refuel the special, and you have no idea what weapon they'll make. It's mostly a novelty class but it's always hilarious when they scoop up all the white drops before suddenly leaping into the fray with some bananas legendary digi-volkite cannon and shrieking madly. It's also hilarious when it runs out and their next special use gives them a stubber pistol

Adult humans don't ping our "cute, protect" instincts the way a small-dog-sized mobile machine does. Agreed, the IG are known for their vehicles but artillery strikes make more sense (even when deep in a cave system or eaten by a giant worm creature?) Combining stuff from the other Soldier classes is pretty much what I'd expect for them, just with 40k gear instead of Borderlands stuff, not that there's much difference for some of those. Commissar tree sounds like fun too, good for multiplayer and maybe with a Blamming capstone that gives bonuses as long as allies are actively fighting but deals damage to them for failing to shoot within certain intervals?

I love the Perils of the Warp Meter, but as Anarchy Stacks from the Mechromancer with constantly adding ongoing damage. So maybe you can use your powers once in awhile safely, but build enough Warp Stacks and you catch on fire. Build more and you start to get shocked and even poisoned until the stacks decay. From our perspective the Daemonhost is very suitable for dying from stacks, but in the Imperium they'd likely just have the Psyker character go up in a big, multi-elemental blast rather than tell every kid with a console about such Warp entities.

Inquisitor is tricky because they're all about rank and connections and not too many crazy powers. Taking over enemy vehicles and other tech though I was thinking was a skill, their Action ability being one of the few big powers they have in the game. Or maybe they can present the Rosario and cause some huge debuff to enemies while buffing allies?

Definitely a good take on the Sororitas.

Callidus... I just wanted to include a properly sneaky sort, like Zer0 but a different stealth effect. Culexus are fairly focused on psykers, and Eversor are kinda not quite the stealthiest around. Vindicare might work though, or make it a more generic assassin with trees for Vindicare sniping, Eversor melee and Callidus stealth?

Astartes, maybe? Fury Meter sounds good at least.
>>
>>64677998
Well in that case I'm heading off. It was fun shitposting but I'm about to fall asleep at my keyboard here. Real talk though the fact you're struggling to see the value in the rover and the potential emotional attachment -even if somewhat excessive in the media right now- is legitimately concerning. Do you ever find yourself struggling to communicate with others in day to day life? Perhaps not recognising social cues that others seem to take for granted? I've got a sister with a mild case of the 'tisms and I can sort of see it's echo here. It's worth considering, if only to confirm it's absence.
You were however regardless, in the manner of your posts a complete and irredeemable cunt. And I mean that word in the very worst way, aside from mere banter and jokes, but you were a thoroughly unpleasing individual to interact with and I shall be glad to never have the displeasure of doing so again, if I am fortunate enough for that to be true. Now I think about it there could easily be some DAoT cannon that can shoot wherever the fuck it's told to shoot, regardless of what anyone or anything else might have to say about it. Wormholes don't fuck about.
The Guard's backstory can have them stealing the designator from an ancient outpost before some heretic or xeno faction can, and they don't quite understand how valuable it is. Inter-character chatter has the Techpriest repeatedly ask to have a look at it, as they're beginning to suspect something about it.
>>
>>64678723
I'm thinking the storyline is that some sort of Warp travel accident strands everyone in a really nasty patch of Catachan, the remains of whatever ship providing your starting hub after you trek through some jungles from wherever the crash tossed you, whether from the ship falling apart or using escape pods. So it could also be full of other soldiers, support staff, and other survivors, plus whatever does the artillery strikes. The major goal is to reach some way to get back off the planet, find out who or what caused the crash oh and investigate that weird xeno ruin someone saw as we plummeted over the jungle? Also why are there so many factions here?! It's not enough to be a Death World, no, there had to be an Eldar saboteur behind the crash, some heretics and a Genestealer cult hidden out in the jungles too! What's that, the ruins are leftover from the Old Ones?! Just.. please Emperor, don't let anymore weirdness befall us today.

Maerorus assassins were supposed to be like Resident Evil's take on Pillar Men: Legienstrasse could eat people through her skin and lay eggs holding clones of her, because of a bunch of DNA from different Xenos species. She could also gain lots of fun mutations at will, so she always had the perfect abilities for the job.

This is what happens when you pay Hereteks and radical-minded Techpriests to make you a bioweapon.

Yes. Maybe make it so that the weapon crafted is permanent, but since you can only have two weapon on you, if you don't stock it, your power erase the one you currently hold (maybe using to fuel the power so it isn't to punishing).
Also you can't drop it, so no lucking out and gearing all your team in legendary.
>>
>>64687519
Yeah that was the idea, it's a class that functions as a continuous gun game. The power takes ages to recharge, so it emphasises constantly picking up trash items to speed up the.. "Feral Inspiration" recharge. You refuse to drop weapons, character chatter can have other characters say "Hey could you maybe toss me one of those cannons some time?" only to be met with furious simian screeches of indignation.
Shields and armour are standard, so there's still progression.
>>
>>64687766
