>76 - Cowardice in the Face of Extinction
Instead of dying an honourable death, the Chapter favoured their own survival over duty's bonds. Whether they simply retreated from a desperate battle, or sacrificed their allies to save their own skins, they were excommunicated for their sins.
Roll a d20 for the purity of their geneseed.

Spared from the rampant defects of many of their brother Chapters, their geneseed is nonetheless slightly changed from their founding fathers'. Perhaps the inherent flaws of Sanguinius have taken different forms, or their implanted organs function slightly differently than normal.

>>
We are the Obsidian Smiths, a renegade Chapter of suspect Salamanders genestock. Not only do we carry any minor quirks of Vulkan's seed, but our eyes are hyper-sensitive and our Sus-an Membrane has never functioned properly - and those are just the well-known defects. No one truly knows when we were created - officially we never were - and the few to remember us even in recent history have nothing but scorn and derision for our name. Embittered by our ill regard, we eventually left the Imperium to fight the Emperor's wars in our own ways, free of the strictures of our previous allies.

We are masters of ship-to-ship combat and prefer to fight in the cramped press of metal and hissing pipes. In the dark is where we belong, with the stale air and the echo of the ship's engine. No room to manoeuvre, and no room to run. We remain in our ships for the most part and never settle for long, plying the stars in search of our enemy and obliterating them where we find them through whatever means available. In return for the passing safety we provide, the splinters of life that reside outside the Emperor's light offer up what little help they can.

Our Librarians are never seen or heard from outside of the Librarius, and the state of our Chapter's psykers is never truly known. Similarly, we have lost almost every one of our venerable Land Raiders, and much of our standard-pattern gear has fallen into disrepair. Instead, we make do with what we forge ourselves, or scavenge from the fallen, or taken as offerings from passing civilisations. We have little uniformity in wargear, but our true purpose has never wavered or waned.

The Master of Sanctity, the Lord Chaplain himself, is a marine without peer and without match. He has led us through every hardship with steel resolve and iron faith, and stood firm against every foe to come before him. He is to be feared and respected, and all shall know it soon enough.

So what about the xenos allies? The Ulumeathic League seems like a potentially-interesting blank slate.

Basically, the Obsidian Smiths helped to save the Uluméathic League by supporting the Eldar against Hive Fleet Naga; the Inquisition didn't appreciate it and sent an IG Regiment after us, while another Chapter understood our reasons for doing it and are supporting us covertly.

Yeah. Our allies are:

If the tyranids were allowed to eat all that biomass, they would have marched right into Imperial Space unopposed and jeopardized dozens of worlds before they'd be halted.
Destroying them while they were weak was the only logical choice, even if it meant teaming up with xenos to do so. Just so happens that, well, maybe those xenos aren't so bad. They're certainly capable of gratitude, if nothing else.
>>
>>64936094
This plus constant dick measuring contests of Imperial vs Eldar weaponry in combat, followed by begrudging tweaks to equipment by both Eldar and Marines as both see the merit in using each other's weapons in specific circumstances, still complaining and ribbing about their quality constantly.

>>
>>64936233
If we go off the Ciaphas Cain books?
The Tallarn would declare holy jihad. Then again, they're also desert specialists which would make it a horrible matchup vs. the chapter.
>>
>>64937363
Someone suggested Vitrian dragoons. Given their penchant for overclocked las rifles, plasma guns, and specialized cloaking armor I'd say they're well suited for a regiment tasked with hunting renegade marines. Not to mention the fact they disappeared in a battle against a mysterious xenos race that came out of a web way breach so canonically they're up for grabs.
>>
>>64937538
I actually meant the Pyran Dragoons but that's way better.
>>
>>64937636
Vitrian dragoons it is!
>>
>>64937538
I second the Vitrian Dragoons.
Alternatively, the Vostroyans would also make for a fine choice, being well-armed and armored and capable of truly absurd grudges over matters of honor. Scintillans and other regiments comprised of egotistical nobility and glory hounds would also fit in just as well.
Hell, we could probably roll up a regiment of our own design in the next thread should we need to.
>>
>>64937359
That'd actually be pretty rad I think.
>>
>>64937359
I'm game.
Been awhile since I watched a chapter of dudes rolled out quest thread style.
>>
What kind of weapons do the Obsidian Smiths use? They're CQC specialists, so I'd imagine meltas and swords. Or do they forgo guns completely in favor of sword-and-shield?
>>
>>64937359
Do it.
>>64937538
>>64937636
>>64937647
>>64937666
So our choices are:
>Vitrian Dragoons, because they're up for grabs and are as appropriate for taking on Marines as the IG can be
>Vostroyans, because they never give up a grudge and would chase us relentlessly
>Roll for it
I'm personally favouring Vitrian Dragoons
>>
>>64938378
I think we should just call it for the dragoons, their motivation is potentially more interesting
>>
>>64937692
>>64938060
>>64938378
Will make a link the quest thread once it's ready
>>
>>64938327
Meltas might be dangerous in shipboard combat but if we don't care about fucking up enemy ships... Flamers are popular and good for corridor fights, but they're a pretty typical Salamander thing so maybe we want to be a little different. Shotguns could be interesting since we make our own weapons now and they're fairly easy to make. Hammers fit the smith theme more than swords I think.

Actually, what's our personality like? We went renegade because we were getting bullied and we're still fighting for the Emperor, but are we gruff and mean ourselves, hard on the outside with a soft inside and some uncertainty about what we're doing, complete sweethearts that just wanted to do better despite having fucked up bodies?
>>
>>64938494
All good questions.
I suppose we'll find out what their character is once >>64938444 gets the quest rolling.
>>
>>64910621
Wew, I'm glad this roll guided us away from yet another bangels chapter. This is much more cool.

Summary post?

>>64938925

>>
>>64938327
They use the standard Bolter/Chainsword combo as well as a few specialty weapons like Flamers and Meltas, although scouts use Bolt Pistols instead because of a dearth of Bolters.
Sergeants may have Shuriken Catapults instead of normal Bolters.
Captains are usually equipped with unique weapons made by the Uluméathic or Eldar.
The Chapter Master has a Thunder Hammer (their only Power Weapon), a Shuriken Cannon/Heavy Bolter, and possibly a Multi-melta. He also has the Chapter's only suit of Terminator Armour.

A little heavy on the use of eldar gear.
>>
>>64939248
I just wish I wasn't headed to bed right now - if it's still going I'll pitch in. tempted to use WanG or DeathWatch to come up with a Marine.
>>
>>64939215
i dunno i think going from crudely crafted weaponry to taking eldar stuff is a little far but maybe if others like it its cool
>>
>>64939262
Then Sergeants can lose the Eldar gear. Then it'll be restricted to Captains and the Chapter Master.

Well, let's begin

The /qst/thread finally got updated
>>
>>64934849
Agreed.

I suggest that Smiths have are jovial and caring, with a good sense of humour. It makes sense, for a chapter willing to work with aliens.
>>
>>64943029
This probably makes the most sense
>>
Also, what about their chapter culture/aesthetic? "Obsidian" suggests Mesoamerican, but Aztec chapters have been done to death. Perhaps Inca/Andean? Obsidian played a role in their culture, too, and they did a lot of ornamental metalworking (gold, silver, etc). I'm thinking builders of infrastructure, roads, etc., perhaps helping the Ulus rebuild, which would fit the bro-ish Salamander style. Power maces, maybe. The Inca used flaming sling pellets - perhaps incendiary bolter rounds? That would fit the Salamanders connection.

Chain-maces, if we want to limit their power-weaponry. [Same anon, btw.]
>>
>>64943655
Incans would be cool and fits the obsidian part better. I saw their mutations and was imagining them as more like svartalfar or dark dwarves, staying in dark places and making stuff and being generally unliked. Granted, my only knowledge of the actual lore is from Dominions, but I thought it could be a cool aesthetic that I don't think I've seen much in 40k.
>>
>>64943863
Like the cave Inca from that one terrible Indiana Jones movie, you know the one.
>>
>>64943863
They can be be both, though Inca sun-worship is a bit of a problem. Moon-worshippers, perhaps? The Inca did love the moon.
>>
>>64944124
that could work, or maybe the religion is that they somehow offended the sun, causing the mutation
>>
>>64946051
And sun = Emperor

yes, this could work

A relatively simple solar cult, except we play the part of those cursed by the sun and cast from its light. One day we shall return to the sun, but we have yet to redeem ourselves.

>>64946305
Bleak, fatalistic, but good-humored. Brotherhood and compassion in the face of doom.

I want to flesh out our Librarians a bit more, they are never seen in the battlefield, so i assume they are few. A forgotten school in the chapter, per say.
Maybe they are secludded from the rest because they are xenophobic against the aliens that now crew the ship
Maybe its a personal fight between the chief librarian and the chapter master, with them not aproving the renegade path the chapter took
Maybe they are away with the eldar seeking some lost forgoten relic, or trying to acomplish some secret mission
Maybe they
>>
>>64946469
doesnt the tyranid shadow in the warp fuck with psykers? maybe something happened there
>>
>>64946469
Maybe they react badly to the chapter's geneseed and choose to be secluded their whole lives
>>
>>64946536
Maybe they have an amplified version of our defects, leaving them blind and with negligeable healing
>>
>>64946513
This
>>
>>64946818
Our librarians end up with brittle bones and hollow eyes as they grow older, much has been tried by our apotheraries to fix this mutation, but so far to not avail. Speculation about eldar deals and forbiden xeno tech has been running around the hallways of the Dark Forge about as a last ditch effort to save them, but noone knows for certain how much of those rummors are hollow truths and how many hold water
>>
>>64946469
>>64946513
So most of them died fighting the Tyranids and a lot of the survivors are off with Iyanden Eldar on some mystic quest.
Maybe in M41 they're helping the Ynnari and acting as a point of contact for Guilliman.
>>
>>64946914
This probably makes a bit more sense than having permanently crippled astartes
>>
>>64946914
how would Gulliman react to us? while he is significantly less dogmatic then the rest of the imperium, we are very close to two xenos races
>>
>>64947346
Probably well enough, I'd imagine we'd be a chapter he'd want back in the fold.
>>
>>64947705
and ow do we react to guilliman reacing out to us? do we believe him or are we suspicious
>>
>>64948133
Incredibly so, something like that while totally likely from our perspective would be highly suspect from the perspective of a chapter that's been on the run.
>>
Alright, what about the Ulumeathic auxiliaries? What do they look like, how do they fight, what's their culture like?
>>
>>64948391
Maybe we should start with a general type - avian? Reptilian? Octopoid? So far, we think that their culture might emphasise gratitude and/or honor.
>>
>>64948391
>>64948443
Quest thread anon here suggesting we make them fill a support role(repairing arms and armor for the most part) also linking the /qst/ thread again

>>>/qst/3312711
>>
>>64948804
Shouldn't we being doing our own repairs and making our own gear though? We are Smiths after all.
>>
>>64948391
I'm thinking they should be alien as fuck, with a remarkably honorable and martially focused human culture that emphasizes humility and respect. I'm talking plantoid, with protruding eye-stalks, a tubed maw, three genders and a complicated courtship process revolving around egg-laying, but a society that, prior to their destruction, was almost identical to the Imperium of Man, with the single-minded worship of a pseduo-God Emperor, hate for Psykers, (other) Xenos, and the Imperium itself, for capitalizing on the weakness the Tyranid fleets inflicted.
>>
>>64948931
this, the repairing thing doesnt make much sense, I think they should be more of a stealth unit
>>
>>64948946
>I'm thinking they should be alien as fuck, with a remarkably honorable and martially focused human culture that emphasizes humility and respect. I'm talking plantoid, with protruding eye-stalks, a tubed maw, three genders and a complicated courtship process revolving around egg-laying

Yes to all of the first part, that's all rad.

>with the single-minded worship of a pseduo-God Emperor

I'm thinking maybe they have an alien sort of collectivistic quasi-group-mind - not a full-on hive, but extreme dedication to their group/species as an idealistic concept. Sort of an awareness of their wholeness and unity as a species. In the wake of the vast cultural trauma that was the destruction of their home planet, they've incorporated the Emperor into that concept, and see him as a savior and redeemer.

I was also thinking that they could serve as psykers, what with the librarians being rare/gone.
>>
>>64949204
I dont like the idea of them being psykers, takes away from our lack of librarians
>>
>>64949204
>>64949386
What if instead of individual Psykers, they had a gesalt Hive-mind, almost like the Tyranids, and the destruction of their throne world crippled it, sending them into a hopeless spiral of suicidal mourning and all-consuming hate for the Devourer before the Eldar and Space Marines arrived, to rescue the last known remnants of their race? I'm thinking they have a much narrower range of emotions than humans, the only real emotions they are capable of having is hate, worship, and mourning, which they *simultaneously* oscillate between distressingly frequently.
>>
I like the idea of the Ulumeathins filling a repair support role, but I agree we should stick with the Smith motif and repair our own war gear. Maybe they perform some maintenance on our ships and vehicles.
>>
>>64949605
Maybe that's why we're so friendly. Despite their profound differences, the Chapter and the Xenos both share a deep, single-minded obsession with craftsmanship, individual smithing, and large industry, respectively.
>>
Bump
>>
>>64949513
>gesalt Hive-mind
I think it would be good for them to have individual personalities, though.
>>
>>64951099
That's why I said gesalt, they're not a single mind, they're many minds in a close network that are freely capable of entering, mingling, and communicating with one another
>>
>>64951840
Fair enough.
>>
>>64951840
>>64949513
>>64949386
I like the idea of them having some sorth of Hivemind that was destroyed when the Tyranids showed up, and the reason we lack librarians is because they created a link between the surviving xenos for them to join us .I like the idea of a circle of librarians in a complete trance, lost to themselves forever more, linked to the minds of every single xeno in our care. A part of them in every one of them.
>>
>>64952278
That's pretty nice anon and IRRE-FUCKING-DEEMABLY HERETICAL but here in the Smiths, we don't care about that, do we?
>>
>>64952278
I think we found our excuse for why the librarians don't come out of their rooms
>>
>>64952278
This feels like it's going a little too far.
>>
>>64953535
Nah, it's simultaneously gnarly and wholesome - a perfect fit for our chapter.
>>
>>64953535
Isn't going a little too far and doing all the wrong things with all the right intentions what gets you branded a Renegade to begin with?
>>
>>64953480
>inb4 it turns out that the librarian's quarters are where the Xenos have been sleeping, out of subconscious force of habit from a past life they never lived
>>
>>64953641
Excellent.
>>
>>64953625
This
>>
so what is our relationship like with our eldar allies?
>>
>>64955779
Pretty tight, I'd imagine we'd have a good amount of respect for them considering we left the imperium after fighting alongside them
>>
>>64955848
what craftworld are we allied with have we decided?
>>
>>64956083
Iyanden
>>
>>64956083

We were allied with Idrahae and Malan'tai until they were destroyed.
Maybe our presence helped save some of those Eldar.
Do you think they like us enough to offer one-time Webway access?
>>
>>64956194
I doubt it, we are still just allies
>>

inheriting a small flaw in their mucranoid glands from the salamanders the obsidian smiths tend to sweat a thicker substance whenever their adrenaline spikes that hardens into brittle black shards the look like obsidian
its not a dangerous substance but some find it itchy or uncomfortable and if they dont cleanse themselves regularly it can build up into a texture like glass scales
