Hello, I'm Techbaron and a little over a month ago myself and the rest of team at Five Element Press promised an update to our own streamlined and updated rules for the Legends of the Wulin system. We have finished that update and you can download it for yourself at the following link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GLXvVOQ8bz7BgK_SsPtF4l8zVxPIZov8/view?usp=sharing

There is a changelog now that details everything that we've changed in 1.5 and from 1.5 to 1.5.1. Major additions for the 1.5.1 edition include: the adding back in of Predictions, changes to Special Weapons and Armor, bookmarking, among other improvements.

The new edition also contains a decent chunk of advice for GMing the system, as well as a decent-sized section on ways of constructing enemy (and ally!) NPCs that won't break your mental budget.

The above were some of the most common requests we received after publishing 1.5.

Legends of the Wulin is an action-intensive wuxia-flavored system built around a default setting of Mythic China, with all the larger-than-life heroes and villains you would expect from something like Thunderbolt Fantasy or Hero or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or any of a dozen other immediate references you might think of.

You take on the role of one of the myriad fighters (called "Xia") in the setting, wielding martial arts both mundane and mystical, righting (or perpetrating) wrongs and etching your story into the world so that you may never be forgotten even long after you retire to a mountaintop monastery to idle away your twilight years.

Characters are also adept at mystical practices revolving around being a particular Archetype, whether that's excelling in combat as a Warrior, dominating the social scene as a Courtier, creating cures and serums as a Doctor that bolster your allies and poison your enemies, or invoking curses and Daoist spells/conversing with the spirits as a Priest. These so-named "Secret Arts" are unbelievably effective, even during a fight, sometimes allowing you to turn an enemy to a friend by a combination of smashing fists into faces and expressing your feelings in words.

The original system had some real mechanical issues, which is why we sought to fix and/or streamline the rules with our updates.

Sounds cool. More of a video game ish player, and only dabble in these kinds of games once and a while, but I will throw it around the discord and see if anyone's interested. Hopefully I get something started. Good stuff OP.

Shame, I would have loved to see some styles from you folks! But thanks anyway!
>>
>>65051781

If anything major gets pointed out we'll handle that but we're not planning to handle loresheets as it's not really got a patch solution, only really a full rewrite solution.
>>
>>65051781
>Shame, I would have loved to see some styles from you folks! But thanks anyway!

Well, I'm one of the devs and I like making styles so...here you go. Have a new style! A little too new to have major testing done so any issues would be great to hear (A developer is the worst person to find their own works flaws, after all).
>>
I've never played Wulin, but heard that it's kind of a mess.
Just how streamlined is this?
>>
>>65052175

That's for readers to judge (See aforementioned comment about devs being worst judges of own stuff) but a lot of this is restructuring the editing of the rules sections to try and make it more comprehensible, though it does incorporate changes to some of the more squirrelly sections. It should be a lot more clear and streamlined through making it flow better, as the original one involved a lot of skipping about the book and using terminology before it was ever explained what that term meant.
>>
>>65050243
Why does her sheath look so weird
>>
>>65042876
How much does this fix the balance issues of the game? I think I remember Dragon Chi + maximizing Strike being pretty one true buildy in the official version, but Focus on Breath giving a ripple might change that and make Five-Elements Supreme Combination the new best technique.

Also why is this 60 pages long and includes the entire rule system re-printed? Do you have a version that only lists the changes?
>>

>Do you have a version that only lists the changes?
The page immediately after the Table of Contents.

>Also why is this 60 pages long and includes the entire rule system re-printed?
Because they're not just reprinted. The entire goal was to present the rules in a clearer and easier-to-understand manner than how they were laid out in the book, along with adding a few updates here and there.

No relation, this is purely a fan project.

The original devs have all moved on to other projects, and the company behind LotW has gone under. There is an semi-official successor currently in development, Tian Shang, which has the blessing of a lot of the original team if no relation to the now defunct company.

And as cruddy as they might be, the currently existent physical copies of LotW are likely going to be the only ones to ever be.

Where are all the styles here?
>>
>>65068551
Still in the original book. There was no need to reprint those as they didn't need fixing or clarification.

Also there are a ton of homebrew styles on the LotW Wiki at http://wulinlegends.pbworks.com.
>>
>>65068628
What's your dev team's opinion of Daoist Sexuality as a loresheet and player option?
>>
>>65069141
Neutral. It's an option, there to be indulged or ignored as you and the other players see fit. Be as sexy (or not) as your table is comfortable with.
>>
>>65042876
How much of the core book would I need to use this? I'd love to run this for my players but asking them to read more than 1 document will make their eyes cross. I'd also rather not buy the core PDF (the company screwed me in a kickstarter).
>>
>>65069933
Given that Eos Press collapsed and the DTRPG accounts are apparently owned by the chinese executives who stole Jenna Moran's Kickstarter money, these days pirating it seems more ethical than buying it.
>>
>>65069933
So, the "1.0" book still contains all the loresheets and kung fu styles, as well as all the rules around Legendary Weapons and Transcendent Techniques. It's also got all the detail around the Mythic China base setting, and the basic rules on being the Wulin Sage that our chapter on Sage Advice doesn't cover. Our intent was to produce an aid to the basic mechanical rules, rather than reprint the entire game.
>>
>>65069933
You can just grab the half burnt manual from the web which is enough homebrew that you won't need any other styles!

I saw you posted this on the discord
Unstoppable Boar looks like it works well with someone entirely damage minded, but I think its a bit too specialized in that regard- someone may find this to be a good replacement for Eight Legends.
We might see an onslaught of people taking the Steel Internal style and spamming +15 Internal Strike Bonus + 15 External Style Bonus + whatever Strike weapon for constant high damaging hits

Just something to consider, LotW wasn't exactly very well balanced in the first place.

>You treat your chi threshold as if it was 3 higher for the purposes of determining your chi threshold.

This seems a bit repetitive:

"When using Unstoppable Boar style you treat your Chi Threshold 3 points higher when resolving a Ripple Roll."

may I suggest:
>Blade Dog Kung Fu
>5: Technique - You learn the Crush the Heavens technique

I don't understand this part entirely:

Blade Dog Kung Fu
5: Technique - You learn the Crush the Heavens technique

Is Crush the Heavens an existing technique other than what is listed in your style? Or is the name of this 5 cost technique "Crush the Heavens" and Blade Dog Kung Fu is just some sort of stylistic name? Like you had a lore sheet in mind?

Oh yes, it's actively designed to be 'damage at the cost of everything else' in the same way that Graceful Crane is defence at the cost of everything else. It's a berseker style, after all.

>This seems a bit repetitive:

Point taken, I'll tinker with that.

>Like you had a lore sheet in mind?

Yeah, it's worded the same way as how Loresheets use techniques within themselves. With the intention that it's part of the Blade Dog loresheet. So it's a technique called 'crush the heavens' within the Blade Dogs loresheet.

How well does this quick and simple piece of homebrew work for replacing Loresheets?

https://pastebin.com/AqkzN7JL

Actual mechanical benefits from Loresheets, I will have to type up myself separately.

Should I notch back the starting Destiny?

Should I cut down the amount of starting Spotlight points? Perhaps slow down the rate of Spotlight accumulation to 0.5 Spotlight per point of Destiny acquired via advancement, with decimals tracked, so that Spotlight investments are fewer but more meaningful?
>>
>>65107041
It's certainly an interesting idea. I've done something similar in a campaign before, highly abstracted Entanglement-equivalents, but yours is a bit more structured. I like the thought behind it.
>>
>>65107041
>>65107087
I started up a conversion of Exalted into LotW back during the "3e is never going to fucking come out" days, but it stalled out and died when I hit the point of having to try to convert dozens of books of setting fluff into loresheets.

I probably could have finished it pretty quickly had I done something like this instead.
>>
>>65107041
Notch back starting destiny to 30. Most people wouldn't spend everything on techniques, and most loresheets required some up front costs to get to the techniques in question anyway.

Additionally, it would be easier to simplify by retaining the word entanglement and doing the following with loresheets rather than removing them:

>Loresheet entry purchase costs are removed.
>Mechanical benefits to loresheets such as changes to Secret Arts, new techniques, or effects that modify techniques, must be purchased with destiny.

>Entanglement may only be spent upon the following... [list “My character...” and “I want to see...” investments]
>>
>>65107947

Setting starting destiny to 30 is a good point.

I am afraid I do not follow your suggestion though. All that does is turn the Loresheets into setting-agnostic sources of extra techniques, and long lists of "My character..." and "I want to see..."

I do not want to use the term "Entanglement," because this operates differently from Entanglement, and I want to avoid confusion. Also, 1.5.1.1 seems to be trying to excise Entanglement from the game, even though a few instances slip through the cracks, like in pages 27 and 36.
>>
>>65108269
>I am afraid I do not follow your suggestion though. All that does is turn the Loresheets into setting-agnostic sources of extra techniques
Correct.
>long list
I mean, copy-pasting lines 8 onwards from the pastebin. That part's perfectly fine.

If you want to remove entanglement entirely, sure, then.
>>
>>65108479

What about other concerns?

Should I cut down the amount of starting Spotlight points? Perhaps slow down the rate of Spotlight accumulation to 0.5 Spotlight per point of Destiny acquired via advancement, with decimals tracked, so that Spotlight investments are fewer but more meaningful?

Guns in Wulin when?
>>
>>65149324
I've run modern Wulin games where guns are just another Ranged option, or a Ranged Special weapon.

Them not being explicitly better is mostly genre handwaved away, but my vague logic for it is that, while guns have more physical power, they're more difficult to channel Chi into, meaning that in the hands of a Xia they're only on par with more classical ranged weapons.

I did have a character use a rocket launcher for one of their big elemental attacks. That was fun.

Wasn't there a Wulin successor coming out?
Based on a HnK post apocalyptic kung fu type world?
>>
>>65156117
Tian Shang: Lone Wolf Fists. It's been on a temporary hiatus due to dev life stuff, but it is still in progress.
>>

Can Legends of the Wulin be used to run other settings beside Chinese myth? What about Fist of the North Star or something else?
>>
>>65156306
I've seen it used for a ton of stuff. Mecha, magical girls, modern Wuxia, high fantasy Wuxia, a few flavours of sci-fi etc etc. The rules are very open to refluffing, so it's pretty easy to adapt them to any setting, as long as the story focuses on heroic badasses who regularly beat the crap out of each other.

Although as mentioned above, a Fist of the North Star style martial arts-apocalypse is the default setting of Tian Shang: Lone Wolf Fists, a semi-official successor with the blessing of the original dev team.

>Tell us more?

Sure. The game in question was about a group of Cadets at a Cerberus Academy, a TSAB training facility. The PCs were:

>Altea: A girl from a planet where the people have mythology about being descended from giants. Big hearted, very strong, dumb as a rock.
>Alexa: A Belkan Noble girl, who's family fortunes had eroded to nothing. Vain, Egotistical and desperate to hide that her noble parents...are an accountant and a secretary because the family has no fortune any more.
>Claire: The most normal (And sane) of the PCs. A girl from Mid-Childa who was the first in her family with the magical potential to join the TSAB. Spent a lot of time acting like the mother of the group and the voice of reason.
>Tazzari: A cyborg girl, discovered as an unfinished project being worked on and discarded by Jail. Has roughly zero confidence and an almost creepy level of hero worship of Nanoha herself, wanting to a hero.

The main focus of the game was that of a newly discovered planet. Hyperion. The TSAB's policy is only to reveal itself and intervene in planets with enough magical advancement but most planets will develop magic by the time they're doing anything of real importance. Hyperion on the other hand had absolutely no magical system or mages despite having actually produced Starships. The reason for such is that they'd encountered Belka during it's height...and when they wouldn't become a vassal, Belka scorched the earth black, forcing them underground for centuries until they had the technological advancement to reclaim a surface with a toxic atmosphere and.entirely fucked up mana.

The TSAB is very uncomfortable with an advanced (If single planet) group with mass-based weapons in abundance and concerned about Hyperion doing something dangerous with a Lost Logia if they find one and Hyperion is uncomfortable with mages and worried about losing their autonomy to the TSAB.

>>
>>65186496

Quite a few yeah. The game ran for close to 3 years. Over the course of the game I was ratcheting up the TSAB/Hyperion tension (Due to people working in the background to promote conflict between the two). Which was putting serious stress on the PCs because they had Hyperion friends before long.

They also got involved in one of the least impressive terrorist attacks ever, when the Hyperion Representative there (Called Achilles and entirely living up to that name due to being a genetically and cybernetically modified supersoldier) dove on the bomb and the only casualty was his suit.

>>
>>65184290
Didn't one of the girls also almost get brainwashed into a maid once?
>>
>>65187452
There was a sequence of events, both amusing and horrifying, including an old Belkan matriarch who had a bad habit of using potent mind affecting magic on people. Some of the PC's temporarily ending up in maid outfits/mannerisms was funny. Learning she'd wiped the personality of one of her own daughters who disappointed her was a real gutpunch, and forced us to take action against her (although it was far from her only crime).
>>
>>65187452

Yes. The Jaeger Family were...kinda monsters, with a Rare Skill allowing them to use mind control magic. In a duel with one of the PCs Lady Jaeger kept trying to play up 'I am a true noble and above you'.

>>65187487

That was entirely the intention. Keep it funny to keep people's minds off the horrifying implications until I hit you with it and it puts all the previously funny stuff in horrifying context.

Hugo went to jail for conspiracy, several counts of murder, and several other counts of attempted murder. It'll be an ice age before he gets out.

The mother was committed to a psychiatric institution after a duel with Alexa, in which Alexa cut off the mother's hands. All the puns ensued.

All of them.

There is no Daddy Jaeger, he's long dead.

"Right now" (in our related games' timelines) the family is run by the only non-insane member, the daughter Sara Jaeger. She's helping her sister recover from being mind-controlled into a maidservant by their mother. (Her sister's memories were so ruthlessly suppressed that breaking the mind control did not restore her mind to where it was.)
>>
>>65195454
>The mother was committed to a psychiatric institution after a duel with Alexa, in which Alexa cut off the mother's hands. All the puns ensued.
That sounds out of genre for a magical girls protagonist in a played-straight version of the genre. The mutilation, not the puns. Was there any punishment?
>>
>>65195991
Alexa constantly trode the line between "provisional cadet" (a step below even the rest of us regular cadets) and "washed out" for her actions. This was carried out in a formal Belkan duel so it was a *little* outside the norm but it didn't do her any favors either.
>>
>>65195991

Yeah, Alexa spent the rest of the game trying to recover her status she lost from that. Since while the TSAB does give the Belkan Non-Administration Zone SOME leeway...that was seriously outside what a TSAB person should be doing.

Which was sorta Alexa's main internal conflict. The Belkans were honourable, brave...and utter ruthless a lot of the time. A purely Belkan mindset that's refusing to adapt is really not in-character for the TSAB. Which led to Alexa being the PC who had the most conflict with the Genre itself at times. Which the other PCs trying to keep her on track.

The non-magical supersoldier Achilles? He turned out to be entirely in genre when they found out that he pretty much ran on pure hot blood, courage and friendship instead of being some inhuman monster like they thought.
>>
>>65187487
I would have been far too tempted to take that into magical realm territory.
>>
>>65199472
The game veered *plenty* into magical realm territory. That was just not one of the things that did.
>>
>>65198341
Oh? How bad did it get with Alexa?

>>65200141
Storytime, you can't just leave us hanging!
>>
>>65201185
Well, it never veered into full on ERP or anything. Not even any real "fade to black" stuff. But there was plenty of relationship stuff, endless making fun of Claire for having the biggest cans among the PCs (and even the NPCs), Alexa turned herself into a wolfgirl through SCIENCE because her family's ancestors occasionally married their Guardian Beasts for an edge for their offspring and she activated the latent genetics there, underfed girls from technologically underdeveloped worlds blossoming into curvy runway models with proper diet and exercise...

Do like was suggested up-thread. Throw ideas like hot-blooded shounen action, magical girls, kamen rider, power rangers, etc. at them and see how they respond. It's tricky, but with a little suspension of disbelief you could even adapt the ruleset to some sci-fi situations--instead of "internal techniques" they're psychic powers or gear sets or nanomachines, son, for example.

The best direct information I can find is this post https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1710667762/the-chuubos-marvelous-wish-granting-engine-rpg/posts/1570366 which is basically the western guy responsible desperately covering his ass and saying it wasn't his fault.

Are there any Centipede - based styles in this game?
>>
>>65292057
None explicitly, even on the homebrew wiki, but one of the example characters referenced throughout the game is an assassin called 'Centipede', as I found when ctrl+f'ing my way through.

The games refluffing potential makes it easy to adapt something, or make your own. Even just choosing an Unarmed/Flexible weapon, for example, could be described as a centipede style martial art. Or in a more over the top game, a Flexible weapon could be a literal weaponized giant centipede, likely complimented by an Internal Style with poison attacks.

I think we can call this thread fairly successful, but we're a few posts from autosage so I'm going to close the tab.

Stay tuned, though, as 1.5.2 should be coming out Soon™ (actually Soon™, not Blizzard-Soon™ or Valve-Soon™)--most likely by the end of March.

Keep an eye on our twitter, at @FivePress, for more updates!

pretty common in china, the government doesn't really differentiate between personal accounts and business accounts, but sees them as one lump sum. Many try to take advantage of that. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
Friend of mine married a woman from china, whose family owned an import/export business, when she ended up divorcing him, he ended up with a percentage of the business, which he ended up selling to their competitors when her older sister got arrested for drug smuggling. He got out of the situation pretty well, and now teaches english and spreads the joys of american RPGs to his students
