/tg/ - Traditional Games

The recent flow of human in fantasy and beastfolk threads got me thinking - since both of those can't really get anywhere, why not try something else for a setting.

What is both monsters and sentient species of the setting came from more obscure and unused animals and other critters? Perhaps with a hint of magic to make it interesting.

In other words - lets make some humanoids, monsters and others out of something else then a bunch of apes and few members of order carnivora (That way we don't have to deal with furfags and their "human equivalent").
>>
To get everything start I offer you this:
Mossosaurs came from a line of lizards, so what if a line of lizardfolk like creatures took off into the waters becoming bigger merfolk equivalent of the world? Perhaps they even use magics to their gains to either allow them to stay underwater for longer (after all they still breath air) or use magics of water conjuring kind to allow them movement on otherwise dry land?

Huh, I came here today specifically to make a thread for this post but I guess this thread just so happened to be close enough.

I want to give my elves (and by extension all fey) qualities that hint they may have evolved from ungulates. With a bunch of fey they have more obvious qualities like horns, rectangular pupils and digitigrade feet, but for elves I was aiming for the traits being fairly subtle; flat teeth/no canines, motile ears, even number of fingers/toes; stuff that would just seem weird but not bluntly reveal them as goat people. I was thinking maybe behavioral quirks or internal anatomical differences would work well but I don't actually know all that much about ungulates. Any ideas /tg/? More extreme ideas are welcome to apply to other fey.
>>
Bump for interest
>>
>>65612167
Well sort of note is the fact that not all ungulates were herbivores so you could go full on carnivore elves based less on modern goats and stuff like terminator pigs and other creatures from that group. That way you can give them all the traits you mentioned but also have sort of "mutants" being born or have traits of their ancestors show up in half breeds - stuff lke horns, or teeth or muscles mass of great degree.
>>
>>65612167
You're gonna be mad or maybe you just won't even believe me because of how oddly specific this is but The Elder Scrolls elves evolved from ungulates
>>
>>65613633
Honestly it seems to be a consistent theme with elves across a bunch of settings so I wouldn't be surprised, but I thought mer were spirits given flesh due to God trickery. Am I actually just miserable TES lorelet?

Cacti.

No. They don't walk. They don't speak.

But they have an innate psychic power that spreads through their roots. Think of it like a biological Virtual Reality: Cacti have created their own massive civilization through the gestalt consciousness from their roots. All those clumped-together Cacti in the desert are actually a civilization far more ancient and bigger than anything in the waking world.

And of course, to learn the secrets of the Ancient War, your Druid will have to enter this gestalt consciousness and partake.

I've had these thoughts in regards to writing a fantasy setting for stories, and for games. For my stories, wyverns and dragons are pterosaurs- wyverns encompasses all pterosaurs, and there's quite a bit of ecological variety, and dragons are a subgroup of particularly large predatory pterosaurs that evolved a biological means of breathing fire utilizing multiple glands in the mouth. In this setting, various crocodylomorph creatures also survived the Cretaceous extinction and have evolved to fill various ecological niches previously occupied by non avian dinosaurs on one of the continents in the story, the continent with most if not all wyverns, and there may or may not be a few surviving non avian dinosaurs. Various extinct plant lineages also survived because the ecosystem to support them on this continent made it through the Cretaceous extinction.

I also want to create a game, or story setting, based on a thing I read on /k/. Essentially a decent sized group of people jump to a different timeline and get marooned there in an attempt to escape a global pandemic. Things in this timeline took a very different turn in the Carboniferous period, and the world is covered in primordial swamps. Giant arthropods of various kinds, gigantic amphibian ambush predators that fulfill an ecological niche equivalent of modern crocodiles, but both synapsid and diapsid reptiles evolved- they attack from the trees like scaly leopards, maybe some have evolved flight. Anyway, three political factions have created settlements and are at war with each other, fighting both humans and various dangerous animals in a primeval swamp-jungle, with semi automatic rifles, pump action shotguns, and both semi automatic handguns and revolvers.

Sometimes some of the best monsters come from our past. Consider Thylacoleo: a jaguar sized marsupial that specialized in hunting large prey. It ambushed said prey by jumping onto it from above, hooking into it with massive thumb claws not unlike what could be found on the larger raptor species, and biting into the fucking neck with a set of teeth uniquely shaped with the purpose of lacerating the windpipe, severing the spinal cord and blood vessels, and dishing out the maximum amount of bite force it's jaw muscles could muster. A bite force mind you that is considered to be the strongest in proportion to body size among all mammals. Much like megalania these things only went extinct because early aboriginal tribes fucked up the land by setting fire to everything and killing off the megafauna that it was geared towards hunting. It's downfall was literally that it was too good at hunting big shit to go for anything else. The fuckers would probably have a field day in most modern settings. If tamed they'd probably be a big hit for races like wood elves and all manner of bandits and rangers.

Why was Australia a horrific death pit of monstrosities since the dawn of time?

Because when you think about it Australia is a perfect testi ground for awful shit. It's a relatively secluded continent with a good chunk of different biomes and climates in all manner of extremes. The continent is perfectly suited for forcing competitors to get as tough and adaptable as they can get or die trying. Alternatively Mother Nature really does love making things kill each other and is trying to cook up some nastier shit so she can one day slam the continents back together into another Pangea in just the right way that leaves the worst flora and fauna in a good enough condition to spread successfully. Who knows?

Oh hey just thought of another animal that would make for a good monster: assassin bugs. Some species will pile corpses onto themselves to hide their scent and break up their body shape. In the case of ant specialists they stick near nest openings because they know that an ant will eventually come to try and remove the corpse. You could super size them and have them specialize in hanging around war zones where they ambush anyone trying to move the bodies near the camp to prevent illness.

Now all we need are giant fucking Strepsiptera running arround and we'll have a setting with more nightmare fuel than all of H.P.Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos. Also make sure that there are a lot of insects with metal exoskelletons (because this is a thing IRL).

You know I think it might just be a case of confirmation bias. The rest of the world is a crazy fucking place. Mexico actually has the highest amount of venomous animals, and africa is riddled with deadly predators, from big cats with retractable razor claws to hyenas whose bite can crush bone. And the number one killer is a fucking two ton herbivore that will charge and gore you on sight, just for existing too close to it. This is to say nothing of the other herbivores, all of which will also gore you to death, a defense they probably evolved from having to deal with giant cats and bonecrushing hyenas. Then you have crocs on every continent, along with all of those nightmarish parasitic insects. Earth is just a scary place to live

So here is a simple concept art for your idea - sorry for not making them suitably freaky, for now trying to find a good shape to turn them into semi-sentient monsters.

Also on related note, should this world be a bit like a classic fantasy world just instead of conventional starting point it started at time when great dying would have happened so the role of humans and like is filled by mixture of dinosaurs, odd arthoropods and most importantly odd therapsids (mammal like reptiles)? Dinos could be oppressed so they are like this here "goblin", while role of dragons could taken over by the dragons from that one dude who made speculative dragons out of monitor lizards.
>>
>>65627673
It depends on how close you get live to them. The problem with Africa and Australia is that Africa isn't evolved enough to push back the scary animals, and Australia doesn't care where you live. Small things will get you anyway.
>>

And just to draw some more drawing concepts into the thread - here is a creature based on the imagine in original post - a boar crocodile like somewhat humanoid creature - they have eyes more towards the front of their skull cause they came from predators that were move active on their feet and hunted prey instead of ambushes, mostly fish and sea life, this is why they got the impressive teeth.
However the teeth proved to be bad weapon against other creatures their size, as they would brake easily, instead it forced them to improvise - leading to creation of tools for hunting and self defense. Now these creatures live in swamps, lagoons and sea sides, in small family groups, lead by a largest female.

While not most unique out of crocdilomorphs, it's a start on the idea, looking to see if anyone else got something to offer.

I am mostly working with what animal has and it so happen crocodiles are plantagrades with enough fingers to make proper hand, and I kept the body shape similar to what they would have in terms of being tail drager with ability to run really fast for short distances.
And I already did more dinosaurian shape in this work - two are different groups and I feel somewhat different builds work really well to distinguish them before all the fluff is added >>65630728

Also in the past I have used some of the mammal like reptiles for random npcs - here is one of them, based on one odd herbivore that had these odd tusks, I felt that face and low build made for a neat looking merchant.
>>
>>65630728
This one looks pretty cool. And speaking of fingers.

I've always had this idea for a "servant" race for these Dinosaurs.... Especifically a T-Rex. They are small and easily bullied into serving as the T-Rexes fingers and hands, bringing food to them, cleaning them, as well as manipulating the turrets they carry in their backs.

Literally a Tyrant Lizard. They usually die off when the colony of servants gets bullied into serving a younger, more boisterous Tyrant Lizard. After a duel for domination.

Think a T-Rex with a house built around them, lived by smaller Lizards.
>>
>>65631432
So sort of like dragon and kobolds?
Though no joke I have seen something like this in one game of mine someone suggested a charcter that was a summoner t-rex who used summons to do all the things he couldn't due to lack of hands. Character was not used at the time, but we plan to reuse them in the future.

As for the idea ya, could work, could be either children, other smaller species or even something like necromancers - the tyrant dinos that lost their servants and refused to die learned art of reanimating the dead and now live on with undead minions.

It would be interesting to incorporate the sex determined by temperature into their culture. egsample
>they need more of a certain sex for some reason.
>they place the eggs in the temple of the war god if they want males or in the temple of the fertility goddes for females
>>
>>65631610
Frankly that trait would be really useful if they ever realize it since they wouldn't have the problem humans got where in some places we got not enough women - imagine just some tribe that was near extermination due to some war, they dig up some cash of specially enchanted eggs and have them hatch in whatever sex is needed more.

On sort of related note for anything cold blooded - I could imagine something like frozen bodies of arcane kind for ancestors - like really old crocs that got so big they need to eat a lot are kept in sort of fronze state in some special icy boxes and taken out when their wisdom or strength is needed - imagine some temple releasing a 9 meter long crocodile monstrosity that is 500 years old that you only heard of in tales of your grandfathers.

They could also control their population in a way.
For example
>If a a pair of crock people want to get married they first have the normal process of getting everything ready for the wedding and all
>During the wedding they have to take an oath that their eggs will be brought to one of the two temples.
>The priestly class decides to which temple the eggs will be sent
> In each temple there will be something akin to a box in which the egg will be held
>The box would have the names of the parents written on it to avoid confusion
>Some time before hatching the eggs will be given back to the parents.

The priestly class could have decided that this will be a generation of warior dudes so the amount of males would skyrocket in proportion to females.
>>
>>65632009
Just checked, crocodile men would be horrifying in wars since not only could they produce many men for war, said men would grow up faster as males grow bigger but also grow faster in crocodiles, at least modern ones.
And ya, something to consider would be stock piles of eggs just in case something bad happens, but then again they could then just have them packed in a back and have few of the best warriors sent off on a sort of colonistion/escape expedition.

Stockpiling eggs wouldn't work because the embrio would run out of nutrients and have to hatch eventualy. With magic the situation is totally different.

Fighting croc people would be a pain in the ass like hardcore hemorrhoids levels of pain in the ass. But you always could try and steal the eggs or kill of the females to reduce the number of males in the next generation.
>>
>>65632260
Well ya, this is why I noted shamanistic magic is needed.
And ya, stealing eggs would be a problem this is why I imagine some large beasts and really dangerous females would probably protect them. Or like that idea I posted earlier - some really ancient warriors are kept near the egg chambers perhaps? And would awake if someone invaded.
I don't know why, but idea of random critter trying to steal the eggs being steamrolled by a behemoth of a croc is amusing to me.

I like pic related (dunno if same guy) for a four legged dragon.
BTW i decided to make wyverns and dragons different orders
>Dragons has four legs and wings on the back or the side
>Wyvern has two legs and the front limbs became wings
>Dragon looks like a crocodile, lizzard or dinossaur
>Wyvern has a pterosaur look but with no beak
>Dragons sleep laying down in dens or in the ground, they only fly for short periods of time (More like gliding) when they need to reach a high place or get somewhere fast
>Wyverns sleep perched up (Maybe upside down like bats), they spent a lot of time flying and are awkward on land
>>

I have been thinking about breath weapons other than fire breathing; i came up with a explanation for the green dragon's gas breath (Two chemicals stored in different glands that are combine to produce a reaction, sorta like what happens with bleach and ammonia), any ideas for how the eletric attack of the blue dragon could work ?
My understanding is that all animals with eletric attacks live underwater where they can stun every animal around them; for a terrestrial animal i have been thinking about giving him taser-like spines
>>
>>65667661
You could probably have electric attack as part of a grapple?
>>

Would work, i was thinking of the spines so that it could have some ranged attack like other dragons

>Of course could also give them wings made of ribs and elongated single finger.

I like the Idea of a Pterosaur like hind legs wings mixed with the rib wings It would remind me of the flying wing design that can be found in planes. Also because the center of mass would need to be way back the tail would be either elongated or thicker to compensate for the center of lift being shifted closer to the back. I would prefere the long tail because the Sharovipteryx-dragon could have a devastating whip attack, maybe even some prehensility

Probably looked like reptile dongs and kept inside the cloaca, it's also possible they barely had a penis and just locked cloacas together like most birds and tuataras; they might also have had more external penises like ostriches and certain birds (Ducks have long corckscrew penises).
Keep in mind it does not necessarily have to be huge just because the animal is; gorillas have one inch penises.

Actually yes. Thylacoleo was pretty much everything a people described about drop bears and more. If the abbos

The downside is that you would have giant murder dragons and actual drop bears roaming the countryside. Polynesians, Melanesians, Malays, Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese, Spanish, English, Germans, Japanese, whatever. Abbos just got to them first.

Party wipe? No, a party wipe wouldn't leave as much an impact. Party was tasked with cleaning out a couple bandit camps that'd been harassing trade caravans by a local lord, decent bounty on every bandit they slew (doubled if they brought back the leader, dead or alive). Camps were in two locations, one by a swampy dock, and one on an island further into the lake. First camp was relatively easy for them, though one bandit attempted to flee by swimming to the island. Got ambushed by something in the water, it pulled the bandit under after a brief struggle, nothing surfacing afterwards. Players were wary, but decided to head along to the next camp on the island thanks to a decently sized boat on the docks, one with some stolen supplies and coin loaded in it already.

They headed towards the island and made landfall away from where they expected the second camp to be, made an off-hand comment about what seemed to be a pair of otters trailing their boat for a bit after they left shore, moving off once the animals noticed commotion in the water. They made landfall some distance away from where they expected the bandit camp to be, trying to sneak up on the camp. As they approached, they heard screams. Finally getting to the camp, they found it mostly deserted. Mostly, save for three bloody trails leading into the water, a severed arm at the start of one of those trails. A fourth trail led to one of the bandits' tents, where they heard moaning and sobbing as they approached. Bandit was clutching a bleeding stump of one leg, with the other leg missing a chunk from his calf, clearly bitten off. Bandit kept sobbing that he couldn't feel his legs, eventually losing consciousness from the shock and blood loss.

Two players wanted to nope the fuck out of there, three decided to at least try and find the leader to collect the bounty on him. All agreed that splitting would be the worst idea, and so they traveled deeper inland, following a set of tracks leading out from the camp. Tracked down the bandit leader, exhausted and shocked, but sound enough to know he was outmatched. He asked to parley, agreeing to let them take him in so long as he gets off the island and away from the beasts he called lochwolves. Hearing from him what the legends around these lake monsters were, they high-tailed it to the boat they took. Along the way they kept hearing strange clicking sounds, sounds getting closer and closer as they approach the shore.

Finally at their boat, they see something moving behind it. Hair like an otter, larger than a wolf, with the jaws of a crocodile, long as a person's leg, making that same clicking sound they were hearing. Bandit leader looks like he's about to start screaming, when players decide to bum-rush the animal. It gets a good bite in on one of the players' arms, and that's where they learn the legend of the lochwolf's deadly bite isn't as much exaggeration as one would hope. Player loses use of that arm for the remainder of the encounter, taking a penalty to rolls with his longsword. They manage to chase it off after one gets it in the neck with her crossbow and another is able to stab it in the side with his spear. The commotion of the encounter caused the clicking sounds to grow louder, with commotion in the water stirring as they get in the boat. They row as fast as they can. It's not fast enough. Jaws bite at the boat as the players try to fend the pack off, only thing that finally does the trick is one player's grenades (Greek Fire bombs) setting the water behind them ablaze.

Even ashore though two more lochwolves are able to chase after. The end of the second encounter is much more bloody, player with the numb arm letting one bite it off just so he could get a good stab into its skull, another getting bit in the leg and almost dragged into the water, saved only thanks to a spear getting lodged into the beast's side so it'd let her go. Only one player actually died in the encounter, and that was partially by choice, partially because she knew she couldn't keep up when they tried to run. Let the lochwolves get ashore and used their other grenade to set herself and the beasts ablaze.

Players have feared me mentioning lakes ever since.

Piezoelectricity exists. It could just keep Piezoelectric crystals instead of using a flint like organ. A piezoelectric crystal just needs to be squeezed to produce a spark.
When it comes to vertebrates I can't recal any IRL case of this happening (not including calcium that is already in the bones). You could always make them live in an metal rich enviroment so they would start to incorporate it into their skin/bone structure.

>Or shall we go full speculitive biology and put in some therapsids that become "humans"?
I like the idea of using therapsids as a race. Gorgonops would make a decent "Orc" race.

Here some Ideas I had:
-We could use some Drepanosaurus descended species as some kind of tree dwelling race. It has a tail spike so it could be interesting.
-Therizinosaurus (pic related) could be also considered as Ogres/bears/something huge. Also giant claws.
-For some sea monsters it would be good to take some Eurypterid.
-Mononykus could be the equivalent of a rat.
-Also the goblin dinos could be riding terror birds.
-The Paraceratherium could be something akin to a war elephant.
-Meganeura taking a similar niche to a hawk.
-Yi Qi and Sharovipteryx being either dragons and/or an bird analogue.
-Also more developed Parietal eyes on certain reptiles would be cool.

Will admit the orcs based on gorgonopsids are hard to pull off, so might redo it if requests come in.
Other then that tried few other races of sentientish people before starting on other stuff - so for now ogre stand in with giant sloths in colder areas (perhaps cold north and such) with the dino you offered being good choice for classic "lizardmen" local of jungles.
Then got the goblinoid dino on it's mount and a small addition from myself - a mixture of armadilosuchus and few of it's vegetarian reletives to create a race that is primary farmers being plant eaters and all.

Why not a field of singing crystal, or an intelligent algae bloom. Maybe a parasitic brain worm that connects to your systems and in exchange allows you greater control over your body and its functions.

No, because they're ruining what could be a cool idea.

No, all demons are meant to be small snakes.
Goat relation was added later on by fan fic writers.

You should make them less thick limbed, unless they're just for show.

I came up with something horrible ,but I'm not sure if it is nightmare fuel worthy.

What do you think anons?
Gigantoraptor + Australian Magpie + Shrike

Mixing anything with a Shrike is nightmarish.

woah

Maybe some voice mimicry would be nice. A hunter than mimics its prey to lure it closer.
>>

What on earth is a shrike?
>>
>>65734405
A small, predatory bird whose hunting method consists of finding prey, grabbing it with its talons, and then impaling the prey on something sharp so the bird can eat the prey at its leisure, often just taking chunks at a time and returning when it's hungry. Insects, mice, lizards, anything in that relative size range, all get fucking impaled on whatever the bird can find.

I always liked the one interpretation that they were evolved from deer.

Ah...ya give it to a creature and make two versions, one that is a monster other that is sentient humanoid and then you will get a sadist race that is closest thing to an all evil race ever.
>>
>>65629647
Excluding the obvious anime waifu fapbait, monstrous creatures with human features should be allowed. If we're sticking with just female examples, then we have dryads, sirens, selkies, gorgons, harpies, and etc. to have inspiration from. Whats a good jumping off point to have a non-seductive femine monster?

This
Recently got into speculative evolution and it’s great for unique monsters

Terryl Whitlatch's stuff is also pretty good, I have two of her books, would recommend

>Science of Creature Design

Like the Idea of having one monster and one race. Would there be some kind of relation between them? Would the race describe the monster as "majestic", would it be worshiped and given sacrifices or would it be hunted down.

For the monster I would still use the Gigantoraptor as a base but I would give it some sort of camouflage feather colouration and a shrike like head with teeth.

For the race I had an Idea for something they would use during times of war. They would carry behind them a cart full of sharp stakes to impale people on the go. The cart would be used to break enemy morale even before the battle begins. Also it serves as the food storage.
THE SHISH KEBAB IS PEOPLE.

A Shrike in action for anyone wondering.

For some reason there is a lot of killer bats in speculative evolution.

Ya, spiky battle field prepared by flying enemies is a horrifying concept.

They couldn't run very far though because of carrier's constraint*, so they'd be impressive mounts but not very practical.

*it's when animals with legs on the sides instead of under their bodies have to compress one lung and expand the other because of the way they twist their bodies when they run

Ignore the filename, I changed my mind.

The ancestor is a very simple, squishy acid-spitting worm with paddles.

The descendant has a longer digestive tract, specialized, squishy fingers, and a eyes and a brain. Eyes are flat against two flaps on the side of the head. It needs to be vigilant while moving (if it sees danger it can dunk and sort of drape it's foul guts over itself) but it needs to be able to gauge depth for shooting acid, so it can move these flaps forward to merge the fields of vision and get vision like ours, or move them back to spread it's field of vision like a prey animal.

The descendant doesn't have a name yet, btw.

Sphinxes could be like pic related but with flying squirrel flaps to glide between trees
Also they can be taught simple patterns in speech and to recognize commands; wich is were the riddles comes from (They may not actually understand the riddle, just wich words are the right answer and to not attack people who say the right one)

Found more freaks of nature that have something interesting about them.
>Barreleye fish - something that has a translucent head and eyes deep inside of said head (pic related).
>Glass frog - A translucent frog.
>Common basilisk aka. the Jesus Christ lizard - runs on water.
>A shitton of different things - Bioluminescence.
>The Frilled-necked lizard - as the name says it has a frilled neck.
>Japanese flying squid - a squid that glides above the water (you could try to make it fly with some tweaking).
>Calyptra - Vampire moth.

Some examples of the creatures I thougt up.
>A basilisk lizard the flesh and organs of which are translucent but the bones are bioluminescent. Esentialy glow in the dark skeleton lizards that run across the water.
>A flying squid that apears like a sea wraith because of the fact that it is translucent and bioluminescent.
>A Creature of which flesh and bones are translucent but the internal organs look like they are rotting. The creature also releases a foul smell of rotting flesh to discourage predators from aproaching.

We need some more strange and WTF creatures so post some strange things you find so we can mix those traits and create something truly metal/awesome.

I like races that are extremely removed from human evolution, kind of like the Elder things and Mi-gu. They should be so bizarre people think they're a monster at first, and shouldn't speak common but be intelligent enough to try and express that they're peaceful.
