How do you make a fight where the Dolls outnumber the enemy still challenging for the Dolls?
>>

Have the enemy turn the environment against the dolls, possibly in a way that forces them to choose between forcing things to a conclusion or retreating to save themselves (find a way to reward the party despite not securing the kill if that happens).

Have them recruit help to give the dolls other targets/threats to deal with.

Any tips for how to play someone with their own problems trying to keep a Holic from looking for, and inventing excuses to fight?
>>
>>69780334
Kind of depends on how badly they outnumber the opponent, but my rule of thumb would be to avoid having the dolls outnumber the enemy by more than one or two combatants. If you've got one really big, scary monster then even having a few Legions or smaller horrors with impactful maneuvers kicking around to gum up movement and make certain areas less hospitable can mean a lot.

Second rule would be making sure the creature has enough AP that they can still place one or more of the dolls under direct threat even with an action economy disadvantage; they need enough AP that they can make appropriate use of any Defend or Hinder maneuvers they have and still have some AP left over to either move around or pummel at least one of the players.

Third, if you have a single big guy then make sure they have adequate Defend maneuvers to actually feel tanky. Your need for these will vary based on party comp so keep that in mind. Ablative parts (e.g. Entrails) can also help here, but too many will make combat feel like a slog.

While I'm rambling: if you do include more than three or four ablative parts, take care with how you handle breaking parts on taking damage. It sucks for your players to grind through a bunch of defensive maneuvers and land a big hit only to find out all they did was burn through the enemy's meat points. If the players have been really fighting for it, I would consider rewarding a large hit with breaking something impactful even if RAW there are enough spare parts left over to tank the hit.

Last one off the top of my head, moving the dolls around can break up combat cohesion pretty effectively. If you have a Requiem who's fond of their AT rifle, then pulling them in with something like Wire Reel can really disrupt their gameplan.

Keep a spray bottle and a newspaper on hand.

More seriously, you probably want to play a character who projects some proper force of personality to keep them in line, so I'd roll with a Sorority and play something along the lines of a Team Sergeant who had minimal patience for their screwing around. You might also consider rolling up an Automata and Robo Cop-ing it up. Myself, I would try and work out an understanding with the player on how we wanted the conflict to develop at the start and figure out the characters' pre-existing dynamic if there is one. Just to make sure everyone starts off on the same page.

As for my thread question, has your necromancer ever blindsided you with a detail about your character? Found out last session that my doll fluently understands binary.

>has your necromancer ever blindsided you with a detail about your character?

That when she was alive she has been used as a project.

Like a father teaching their daughter all the ins and outs cars by restoring a vehicle together,
papa necromancer taught daughter necromancer all the ins and outs of creating dolls by turning my character into a doll together, while my character was still aware and conscious but unable to fight back.

This was in the same moment we found Daughter Nechromancer, and found out Father Nechromancer had died at some point while we had all been inactive.

Depends on the party composition. If they're all fighty girls, then equivalents to Auto-separate for their favorite properties is a good start so that you don't have to dump in 30 entrails to tank the obscene damage that properties lead to.

If they have at least one supporty character, it gets trickier because a doll based on moving/hindering enemies basically needs to be shut down or they completely shut down enemies in situations where they don't need to burn all their hinders on multiple enemies. Skinny could help, as does making most of the enemy's support/hinders/defends 0 AP.

Basically enemies that are outnumbered need:
-Cheap or free reactions so that they can apply pressure to the PCs
-Cheaper (or at least not overpriced) attacks so that they can keep up the attacks and not be horribly outclassed.
-Answers to the PCs most cost effective antics so they don't have shit like wasting AP moving to PCs who then beat the shit out of them.

>>69781461
Explain to the player that inventing excuses to fight is going to be fucking irritating if they intend to do it all the time. It's not really that hard to deal with a fight happy person in a party of pacifists if they're on-board, but if they decide that getting fights is more important than what everyone else wants to do, then no amount of great RP will fix it.

The dolls find a strange group of savants running and protecting an estate in the wastes. They are polite and even, shockingly in this harsh land, hospitable if you are civil toward them. They insist you respect their privacy and only visit the parts of the estate they explicitly say you can.

I think my group would just be happy they aren't getting shot at. The Stacy would probably want to bolt, the Thanatos would be idly curious, and then my character would be happy for the chance to meet new people. Not sure on the Psychedelic. Probably wouldn't go nosing around unless something properly suspicious happened.

I've been having a problem with basic character creation, because it seems like the essentials for character creation are somewhat scattered through the book.
Can someone show me the basic process, like...
This is your doll types
These are the possible abilities you can take for your doll
These are the penalties you can take for your doll
Accessories/ weapons/ doodads, etc.

Alternatively, pick a doll and step me through what you did to create her.
I chose this
I then did this
I added this
I took this away
I gave her this stuff

Just so I can fully understand how everything fits together. I love the setting, it's fuckin' badass, but I'm completely lost/ baffled/ mystified by the character creation process.

Perhaps I should have clarified in >>69781461 that I’m not having an issue with a problematic player, though thank you both for your advice on how to deal with such a situation and the importance of out of character communication and understanding in a group.

I am instead asking for roleplaying advice in a situation I would struggle to figure out how to deal with as a player. "asking for ways to deal with a variety of in universe situation" rather than "how to deal with a problematic player's behavior".

>I really fucking wish there was a proper manga for this setting instead of just short things.

Why is this? I am curious to know what the benefit of this would be for you.

I rather like how vague things are. It gives me a much freer hand since their is less established canon to step around to do what you want.

I've also found it makes getting potential players to try it easier, since the amount of creepy stuff there it tell them they can ignore is not impracticably large.

Scheduling makes putting new groups together hard enough already.

I like having big empty spaces to fill in and not too much established material to sort thought and selectively bury, twist, or keep before getting down to the business of making up the setting for a new campaign.

I also tend to find storytimes for campaigns using a system or setting to be a good at inspiring motivation in me try a system or setting, whereas I tend to find official stories or comics to not be. I'm not sure why. I will admit that comics can inspire me to wasn't to try out systems I was previously uninterested in.

Keychain of Creation made me want to try Exaulted which I previously had no interest in, even though I would find a campaign that followed the lines of KoC to not be appealing, it inspired me to want to try the system and setting.

I still want to play a game set in the Girl Genius universe and that setting has no ttrpg system it's based on.

But all of that is just me.

Please tell me why Nechronica comics would be cool or beneficial for you.

>Please tell me why Nechronica comics would be cool or beneficial for you.
It would be cool. That's it really. Yes the lore is vague and makes things interesting for campaigns and stuff, but Nechronica's setting is still top tier and seeing it drawn to life would be neat imo. Amateur stories are nice and all but reading a Nechronica campaign with professional storytelling and visuals would be a good way to spend a couple hours. All the information is already there. There is a list of enemies for antagonists. We know what most of the world is like. There are Necromancers and Dolls. A half-decent mangaka could write up something interesting about it.
>>
>>69792531

Ah. Thank you for explaining that. I can see how that could be cool.

>tell me more
I'm not sure exactly what else there would be to tell you? Idea one is to simply override her by being a hardass and whipping her back into line through de facto authority, either acquiesced by the rest of the party or assumed and unchallenged. Think:
>We don't have time for this shit. Our sisters are in danger, you can do something about it or you can growl like the beaten little dog you are and be useless, but I'm not sitting here to put up with it!
Spice with gunshots at horrors to your taste.
As for the Robo Cop thing, you could just have her snarling roll off your back. It's not important. You have a mission, you have set objectives, you probably have something resembling a timetable. There isn't time to fight with your sisters about petty things.
And if she makes herself an obstacle, roll over her like one. Just try not to think about what that might ultimately mean. The mission is more important.

I guess I can try and walk you through my process for creating Meltie; she's for an upcoming campaign and not exactly field tested, but it should work.

First, I try and get an idea of what I plan to play. In this case I envisioned Meltie as a medical-themed IFV; she's a doll trapped in a military chassis with weapons strapped to her. A hatch opens up directly into her abdomen so others can harvest her rapidly regenerating organs for use in emergency surgeries in the field. OK. That's a base; where am I going with that?

>Positions
Positions are basically personality traits and archetypes given mechanical value. The Sorority is a natural born leader, so most of her skills reflect her ability to direct the party and hold herself together under pressure. The Alice is a cinnamon bun, so most of her skills reflect her innocence and unbreakable optimism. Out of all the character creation options, the Position is way more about *who* your character is than anything else.

In Meltie's case, most of the ways she interacts with the people and environment around her involves pretty cold machine logic with occasional bursts of bright emotion, so Automata suits her best.

>Classes
These will be dictated how your character is physically built. In this case I took Stacy as my primary and Thanatos as her secondary. Stacy because Organ Donor was a core part of the idea, and I also wanted to act as a frontline unit for her duo partner. Thanatos because I wanted her to develop into a serious close-range threat later down the line.

Now that I have my classes and Position picked out, I start taking parts and abilities. First for parts:
Meltie has:
>2 Armament points, one from Stacy and Thanatos each
>1 Mutation point from Stacy
>1 Enhancement point from Thanatos
>1 extra defualt point to be put anywhere.
Cont.

File: D7FmVnQV4AAALX1.jpg large.jpg (296 KB, 1448x2048)
296 KB
296 KB JPG
>>69795220
The extra point goes into Armament, because I wanted to start with Flamethrower. For tier one, I took Kung Fu for a little extra AP and for tier two I took Coffin because physical tankiness suited the character. It also flowed with her part storage gimmick.

For Mutation I took Slippery and fluffed it as the slopes of her armor occasionally causing attacks to glance off her chassis.

For Enhancement I took Voice Effect because she commonly communicates through loud-speakers dotted around her chassis (since turning the head around to address people can be very awkward in tight spaces or crowds) and because it worked for the support role I intended for her.

For abilities I tend to start with class ones. For Meltie I took:
>>Stacy
>Organ Donor
The ability the whole concept is built around
>Protect
Because she's acting as the tank/distraction as a duo partner with another doll.

>>Thanatos
>Drama of Death
Since she's working in concert with someone, it made sense for that to reflect directly in her combat style. This makes her even better at working in tandem.

>>Automaton
>Cover
Picked last because I didn't have one picked out before hand, I went with Cover, to emphasise the fact she's a walking talking distraction that can actually fight back.

And all of the rolled character info I did afterward. In Meltie's case I rolled
>>AGE
>18 (rolled for a 15 but dolls are little older than normal for the purpose of the campaign)

>>Premonition
>Catastrophe

>>Memories
>Starvation
>Song

>>Treasure
>Accessory
>fluffed as a compass necklace, who's needle occasionally changes directions.

I use the character info to infer quirks, certain hangups, and other such smaller character traits. I like to fluff my starter memories, with permission from my DMs, as a way of fleshing the character out in my head more.

And that's Meltie. I've been up a little too long, so I hope this makes some sense or is helpful.

>Nechronica's setting is still top tier

Frankly, the more detail is explored, the worse it gets, personally. It'd be more fun to have it be an anthology of stories using the same thematic elements rather than letting it all take place in the same explicit setting. This would also have a nice bonus of keeping the audience as much in the dark about interesting elements in a particular story without "Oh, I know in chapter 3 that this is true, so it's ok that it looks like it's not true here."

Can you tell me more about determining what number and kinds of defend parts are likely to be adequate?

Like if someone has lullaby and a 2ap shooting weapon am I going to need a lot more of them then I otherwise would if that party member was a more normal shorty or melee doll?
>>
>>
>>69786952
>it gets trickier because a doll based on moving/hindering enemies

I’ve never seen a doll based around hinder or forced movement. Only ones that make use of hinder or support here and there with basic parts or have cold light to help fuck with legions and horrors.

Do you have any examples you could give of dolls that make strong use of hinder and forced movement?
>>
>>69797854
DESU I've not actually run a game, so my perspective on this comes purely from a player's point of view, but if you have a player going for something like Lullaby + Shotgun then I might not go for a single big guy at all unless you're fine with countering that player specifically. Unless you give your boss Regeneration on a part and make it cost 0, even blocking is pretty much a net loss for your dude.

For a character like that I figure you need some ability to seriously pressure them, either through moving them somewhere they don't want to be, running up the damage on them, or through dumping some Horrors in their lap and making them deal with it.

I'm partial to the third; my DM used that to pretty good effect early in our campaign on my AT-sniping self and it made for a fun scenario; small horrors basically spawned in Eden and moved forward to harass me as I sat in the backline, turning our pretty organized battlefront into more of a wild brawl.

Off the top of my head, I'd use something they could take out in three hits (not accounting for crits). One free defend 1 part, one movement part, one attack part that can reasonably threaten them. A couple of these in the wrong spot could give a low favor group a real headache.
>>
>>69780101
Someone once asked me if I wanted to play Nechronica with them. I looked it up and asked if I HAD to play as "necro-pedo bait". When he said that was the fun part, I haven't answered his DMs on Discord since.

>>69797158
From hanging out in the threads for a little while and seeing people talk, it seems to me that different groups tend to play out pretty differently. I could easily see a different artist per group being followed as the tone/scope changes with the cast.
>>
>>69799529

Things that didn't happen for 200.

>>69799018

>Do you have any examples you could give of dolls that make strong use of hinder and forced movement

Pawn's gambit on Psychedelic is the only easily reusable forced movement ability, but it's pretty powerful since it's cheaper than Bone and reduces enemy AP by its cost even if it gets hindered, so if the enemy doesn't have something to negate that, you can just stun lock them by moving them back and forth. There's also Wire Reel and Boost which can be done after enemy declarations to both deny the action they were gonna do and force them to spend AP moving if they're range 0. There's also pilebunker which isn't a bad melee attack.

As for Hinders, Embalming is the obvious one. It's pretty damn expensive at 2 AP but a -2 is going to make a lot of things miss that would have otherwise hit, though you're not going to be taking many, if any, swings yourself. The easiest class combo to set this sort of arrangement up with is a Romanesque/Gothic for grabbing Wire Reel, Embalming, Armvise, and Delight in Corruption.

If you mean specific character builds from experience, no, not really since our group plays with Blast From the Past which modifies Romanesque and Psychedelic to make them better at those roles.

>>69797854
>Like if someone has lullaby and a 2ap shooting weapon am I going to need a lot more of them then I otherwise would if that party member was a more normal shorty or melee doll?

Really with 1 AP shooting dolls is that defenses you actually have to declare aren't going to do much because they're shooting again next count. They're consistent but they're not really going to beat a similarly optimized melee doll. One of the big downsides of this style is that shit like Crab Legs or Gauntlet denies them pretty hard, one using Instrument of Evil (which they should be using if they're rolling with anything other than shotgun) can get through but that's still cutting their damage in half.

>>
I read the premise to this game. I'm intrigued but the premise of dolls themselves seems pretty flimsy, you're telling me every necromancer still around has this odd aesthetic obsession?
>>
>>69802039
Way I play it, the one thing necromancers have in common is they like their dolls to be between four and five feet in height. Dolls can be quadrupeds, have faces like dumptrucks, and have girl or boy parts between their legs or even be as immaculate as their namesakes.
>>
>>69802039

Yeah. Dolls all being little girls doesn’t make sense to me either.

So I usually assume the tastes and resource levels of nechromancers vary a lot.
>>
>>69802039
Really, you can fluff your character to look about however you like as long as it fits with what your DM is willing to work with. I have one character who's a 17 year old albino cyborg in SWAT gear, with the only real animu stuff being the fact she stapled dog ears over her human ones because she's paranoid about being ambushed. My second character probably weighs in at over 700 pounds and stands around six feet tall at the ripe old age of nine because she's a giant centipede/human hybrid. And then there's Meltie >>69795220 who's literally an IFV with a face.

The lore reason they're typically young girls is because they exist as playthings before they're supposed to be anything practical. The Necormancers like to string them along and watch as they break. Most Necromancers are also huge NEETs.

But desu the most important part of having a Nechronica character work is having them be emotionally vulnerable. Even Junks, beaten down and chewed up as they are, aren't completely able to deal with the day to day realities of surviving in the apocalypse, they've just accepted the reality of fighting for their un-lives every day. There are still ways to dig at them.
>>
>>69802664
I figure the real guideline for chargen is that the character shouldn't be all self confident- take whatever base you like, physically or not, but dont make it someone who's a confident functional adult, so I'm with you on the vulnerability part. A misfit, an outcast, someone who hasn't got their place in society, or has retreated from it, all those work just as well as a kid or early teenager. Load out the issues.
If it's not the fearless russian neospartan, then it's all good.
>>
>>69801904

In the campaign I played the composition and apparent age of the dolls varies a lot because the nechromancer, while a personal terror for us, got all of their resources by salvaging from the small packs to vast herd of mindless or animalistic undead that would pass near or sometimes attack her stronghold.

The smallest of us was about 5’0” in a patchwork mid-shin length dress who grew Sharp bony structures from her Ulna, Radius, and spine. The arm ones grew long and loosen and fall off like teeth, meaning she pretty much always has a weapon, the back spines were used to mount a container for part storage and doll repair equipment.

the largest of us was about 6’2” and looked like a female version of the thinner of the blues brothers. She was by far the most laconic of the dolls and tended to follow and put her influence behind whoever was sanest at the time.

They were also the two most human looking of the dolls.

My character looked more like a shrunken version something out of Metal Gear Rising since she has been mostly rebuilt with parts from living-impaired cyborgs who in life hadn’t sprung for the cost of human looking prosthetics.

Another character looked like some sort of anamatronic Princess who had a lot of their exterior coverings lost and patched back together with whatever was available over the years, lots of exposed metal in the arms and legs. She was built like a woman of slightly above average height.

That wasn’t everyone. All told only 3 of us were in the child/short adult range physically.
>>
>>69802740
>the fearless russian neospartan

I’ve never heard this term before. What is it?

>>69801904
Yeah. When I encountered Nechronica I basically took the approach of trying to assess the system for usefulness while ignoring the art, themes, setting details as much as possible. Sort of like what I did when I was first exposed to MAID.

After seeking help in wrapping my head around the system, my imagination started coming up with fun stories you could turn into campaigns using this system.

This is not a path to playing or running a system that works well if you dump book in someone’s lap.

Quick rule question,
Rapid states "Maneuvers with this Timing occur before the Maneuvers they were declared in
reaction to and override their result"
Does this mean the initial action the rapid maneuver is in response to nullifies the action because it was overridden?
>>
>>69807225

Your wording is strange here, but the point is that when you declare a rapid in response to something, it pre-empts the action. If someone declares chainsaw on you and you use boost which is a rapid timing move 1, it moves them out of range before the swing can happen.
>>
>>69807225
Basically, declaring a Rapid puts it on top of the stack. So an Action is declared, then a Rapid is declared in response, the Rapid happens, and if the Rapid did something that would invalidate the Action then the Action doesn't happen.

So say you're about to get hit by an attack, you declare Psycho Blaster in response and roll your attack check for it. If Psycho Blaster hits and destroys the part required for the attack, then the attack never happens. If the Blaster hits the wrong area, or misses completely, the attack still goes through normally.

I’m not sure if it makes more sense to stat up motorcycles for a party of biker dolls, or the single motorcycle a party of 2 or 3 dolls share, as a horror or a savant.

Savant lets you get more granular with damage since savants have locations.

But horrors are less complicated to keep track of.

If it’s 2 or 3 dolls using one motorcycle then having them all start the game with a fetter towards it can be useful if you want to throw spirit attacks at the party sooner/at all. Plus it can help reinforce how important the bike, or at least what the bike does/represents, is to the party.

Which way would you anon’s recommend?

Our APC is statted as a horror when we actually do vehicular segments, but generally anything that happens to it tends to be driven almost purely by narrative or adventure phase skill checks. Mostly just because it doesn't fit into most places. Also the DM is good at finding ways to lure is out of it.

Its skills can certainly facilitate a fun time and some very silly combinations, like combining it with the Jester fan-made class for that out of a hat skill and mounted weapon to spit up whatever weapon suits your fancy for both of you to use. Really, the most important thing to keep in mind with it is to make sure that you have something to do other than putting someone on you, moving them around, and giving them a bonus.

I am considering playing a character with skills in reducing madness.

But rather than being a breath of fresh air by being an unspoiled cinnamon bun.
They accomplish this by being so bent that they can keep their chin up even in the worst situations.

When things are this bad, there’s little point in falling apart, and they have a chorus in their head urging them on, even if she can never understand them, they’ve always had her back, and they even sound pleased when she sings along with their songs that screwball language of theirs, but that’s beside the point. Most people aren’t so blessed so she tries to share that gift of companionship and support with those less fortunate.

I’m wondering if I should go with
Sorority or Alice with this.

From my experience a lot of single bosses and outnumbered enemies are often made miserable by the dolls. One thing I frequently do for boss battles and powerful foes is to give them more free actions to help balance out the action economy. Things such as "Auto timing, X happens, this takes place once every Count" to help keep pressure on the dolls.

>>69814511
They're both good ideas. I'm personally leaning more towards Alice. She's nice. She's comforting, but she's clearly insane. It's further jarring because Alice tends to be the heart and the soul of the group.
>>
>>69814556
Thank you.
Alice does feel more thematic on the face of it.

Though Id appreciate a breadown of the in-practice differences in madness handling between Alice and Sorority based on how their different skills come together in actual play.

To put it more succinctly. I wish to learn more about my two options from the experience of more seasoned Nechronica players and GMs.

Pic possibly unrelated.

Good morning, anon. Sleep well!

>>69814734
I admit that I haven't had extensive play time alongside an Alice character, but from looking at their ability lists the Sorority strikes me more as a team leader with skills like Tough Love, Order, and Self Control. I think you could look at it like the Sargent in a war movie whose men respect him because, while he may be a hardass shithead who rides them on small details, they know he's the way he is because he's tearing his hair out trying to look out for them and get them home alive.

In practice, the only reliable Madness control offered by Sorority is through Tough Love, which comes at the cost of damaging a team mate. Self-Control is purely self-focused madness control which is helpful but doesn't sound like it jives with your idea. Grace requires you to be taking on Madness yourself so it's more to help you break even on rerolls than prevent normal build-up. Secret Whisper is the only free conversation check they get, and it's only one check per Battle Phase.

Alice makes more Conversation Checks, makes them easier to succeed, and Prayer can just straight up remove one madness from every team member if it goes off (and it doesn't cost you anything to try it, either). Madness management is just about the only thing that they do aside from Princess, which facilitates other party members in their assumed goal of protecting the Alice.
>>
>>69812156
How could you forget? You're here forever.

>>69813165
I'll probably have to talk it over with the DM. Now that I've slept on it, it occurs to me that it doesn't really jive with the distraction/assassin duo we had in mind for the party, even if a chuuni Spanish weaboo chopping down undead with her cavalry katana from atop her flame-spewing robo steed sounds rad as hell.
>>
Anybody have some ideas for unconventional position/class combination? Feels to me that cerain positions are often combined with certain classes, like Holic and Gothic, or Sorority and Romanesque, but what would be some interesting "outside the box" combinations?

One thing that comes to mind would be Alice combined with full Gothic, for a precious cinnamon bun that also eats other undead.
>>
>>69816910
>Alice
Any frontline type, really. Gothic, as you said, is probably the most jarring but I cant really think of any time I've seen a melee centric Alice discussed here. I feel like Baroque would also make a nice contrast with their often gruesome and drastic mutations.

>Automotan
Automatan kinda slots in anywhere fairly neatly. If I had to guess then maybe Gothic, given their unnatural hunger is a little at odds with the Automaton's typically cool demeanor.

>Court
Gothic, probably. But this is another one that slots pretty neatly into whatever.

>Holic
Requiem, at a guess, just because they like to be up in the frontline.

>Junk
Probably also Requiem given their skill focus on being up on top of the enemy and taking hits.

>Sorority
I feel like Sorority is sort of at odds with the fluff description of Gothic, but I dont think it would be very hard to piece something convincing together.
>>
>>69817604
I think Gotic Alice could work if played asa very childlike, or animal-like, character, who doesn't really understand why her friends might be uncomfortable with her gobbling up enemy undead. I mean, cats are cute and lovable but they also like to casually murder small animals.
>>
>>69814556
>Things such as "Auto timing, X happens, this takes place once every Count" to help keep pressure on the dolls.

Having dealt with this sort of thing as a player, this is something that should be done very carefully because it can get pretty obnoxious or irritating, especially if the group mostly uses weapons on the more costly side of things because multiple counts of "git fukt for not having optimal 2 AP weapons" where the ticking clock screws you can get irritating.

>>69814734
>I wish to learn more about my two options from the experience of more seasoned Nechronica players and GMs.

Alice skills are about bleeding off madness acquired. She doesn't have any means to "prevent it." In fact, her best skill, prayer gets negated by anything bad happening to her. Other than prayer it's just conversation check stuff. Mechanically, there's nothing that suits playing an "insane alice" and intentionally playing one as such can kinda defeat the point of the class.

Sorority, meanwhile, has skills that actually help as she takes madness. Self control gives you a +1 to conversation and madness checks when you have a fetter in madness and Grace lets people make conversation checks at you when you reroll via madness. Secret Whisper lets someone make a conversation check towards you at the start and end of combat and Tough Love lets you slap people to get them over whatever crazy they got. But it is important to note that Secret whisper is gonna be more of a "fluff buy" than one that's all that useful unless you got decent dice luck, a GM that's generous with conversation check bonuses, or people grabbing stuff to give them bonuses to the check. Tough Love's use is gonna depend on how your party handles madness and what fetters they have go into madness. If someone has a devoted fetter in madness, it ain't worth slapping them to clear it.

If you wanted to play someone who was unhinged but otherwise keeping the group together, Sorority would be your best bet.
>>
>>69816910

>Anybody have some ideas for unconventional position/class combination?

An important thing to get about this is that Position's the one that explicitly has bearing on personality. Even Gothic isn't much more than "You find zombie meat palatable." If you mean mechanically, it depends on the skills taken.

>Any frontline type, really. Gothic, as you said, is probably the most jarring but I cant really think of any time I've seen a melee centric Alice discussed here.

They happen, having played a Alice/Chariot before and currently in a game with an Alice/Romanesque/Thanatos. It's not really optimal unless you have a Stacy to eat hits because prayer is just 2strong compared to every other skill Alice has.

>Automaton/Gothic
One of the easiest ones to make sense of. You just don't care what the source of meat is, what's important is that it keeps you going.

>Court/Gothic
"This is kinda gross, but it doesn't taste too bad and my limbs grow back. Why shouldn't I eat then?"

>Holic/Requiem
Having been in a game where the Sorority/Requiem acted more like a Holic, this is piss easy to make work. Just be obsessed with your guns or whatever else strikes your fancy. Also, mechanically, it has the only maneuver that can directly boost the damage of shooting/blast attacks, not to mention that Carnage is pretty damn valuable for someone sitting too far back to be in range of their sister's supports.

>Junk/Requiem
Kinda, but it also has defender of Eden, which for a long range doll means you make it *extremely costly* to fuck with you since every maneuver costs more. That attack they swung at you? +1 AP cost. The Support to make it hit? +1 AP cost. The defend when you shoot them? +1 AP cost. Being in the back row also means you can get saucy with Lame beast if you really want to take that chance. There's also the fact that Shotgun is the best, overall, shooting attack weapon so it's entirely reasonable to have a front line requiem.

>Sorority
See Automaton/Court

I'm not saying any of these combos are particularly hard to pull off, just spitballing on what the least common ones might be in a standard group.

desu there's very few possible combinations in Nechronica that require a significant amount of effort to justify. Heck, I'm going to be running a couple of Alice skills on my Automaton eventually and even that wasn't hard to think through.

Would it be too busted if Quadruble Amputee also negated Dismember on a character's arm and leg locations? It feels kind of busted to me but it really bothers my autism that a quad amputee can have the legs that they dont have be cut off.

Now that I think of it, I wonder if you could just treat them like a Horror and have Dismember just do double damage instead of rolling a check.

My gut reaction would be that yes that sounds OP.

Keep in mind, dismember weapons tend to have lower initial damage than weapons without a property and if a defend reduces that damage to 0, the dismember is negated, so all the defends in the game can potentially negate dismember. There's also the baroque skill "Crystallize" that lets you negate dismember and a number of other properties for 1 AP and it can be used multiple times per round.

Reinforcement parts are the kind of parts that let you do things beyond that of a baseline doll.

You start the game with a few, and buy more as the game goes.
Basic parts on the other hand, are parts every doll starts with.

In the case above. One of the players in anon’s group bought the animal ears reinforcement part, which boosts a doll’s maximum action points by one and isn’t destroyed if you critically fail an action check made using it.

Enhancements always feel like the most finicky parts to roleplay out. I figure you need a little set-up from your GM to get them to be properly convincing, since you can't just have them leap out of your character's flesh like with mutations, and they can't usually just be picked up like armaments.

I don't disagree, but I feel like more mechanically inclined augs can be harder to flavor if your DM doesn't roll with you on it. A lot of stuff in the enhancements tree strikes me as stuff that has to be properly integrated, which takes a little more set-up than spontaneously growing something.

Have you had cackling loud and proud villains in your Nechronica games?

I remember reading about a campaign where the party worked for a relatively weak nechromancer who in the ruins that were once the USA.

They were on their way to Spain I think.

On the way to the east coast they fought a doll and savant eatting monster of a nechromancer. She named her servants after food and spices and the party ended up picking up one named Basil.

They also fought some hedonistic nutter who decorated infrastructure and architecture around his place with still living doll parts.

Then they crossed the Atlantic and the port they arrived in got wrecked by catholic themes army of undead super psychos.

None of my games have that kind of over the top evil. It’s all been more personal and mundane evil mixed with psychological horror.

>The only thing before the dolls is the entrance to the maze, a three-pronged fork of winding paths.
>Left, right, or forward?
>Tachi, still carrying Lily, chooses left.
>Just as soon as she's a step apart from Port and Protoca, an energy barrier, just like the one that had been guarding the arms in the library, appears behind her.
>There's nothing for it; they'll have to split into teams of two and hope they can both find the exit.
>Tachi continues left as Port and Protoca try and figure out which path to choose.
>suddenly, Tachi feels strange. Her dead heart clenches, and she stops.
>"What is it?" Protoca calls out, concerned.
>Tachi snarls. Annoying. Why does Protoca always coddle her like this?
>Simultaneously, Lily's grip tightens, and she hisses in anger. Then flinches. Then hisses even more furiously, shaking her head and clenching her newly repaired teeth.

[Tachi's Fetter towards Protoca has been forcefully changed to Grudge]
>Tachi's skittering limbs tense, digging into the soil as a sudden wellspring of hate for Protoca flood her mind. "What-" Tachi staggers as she grasps her head, Letting Lily slide to the ground, unable to battle the foreign influence.
>Lily holds tightly to Tachi's hand, even as she slides down.
>Tachi forces her face into a blank expression and turns to the girls behind her, "Something is in my mind." Tachi says, her eyes glaring at Protoca, somehow discernible through her blank look
>A voice booms.
>"WHITE KNIGHT TO E4. WHITE PAWN TO D4"
>A woman's' voice sings.
>"RED KNIGHT TO F5. RED PAWN TO D5."
>A barrier of psionic energy springs up between Tachi and the rest of her Sisters, preventing them from following her, for the moment.
>Protoca flinches in surprise, and immediately cleaves at it with her shovel.
>Then flinches in pain. The barrier is unharmed.
>The hand on the shovel's handle has been smashed into a mangled snarl from the barrier's recoil.
>Lily hisses again, her throat incapable of producing more than a death rattle.
>She glances about angrily, and one could discern easily she'd say some choice words if she could.
>>
>>69854680
Lily's Fetter towards Tachi was also forcefully changed to Grudge; forgot to mention
>Port glares at the barrier as she chews on the inside of her cheek. "I guess we'll have to meet back up later. Protoca, you think we should move down the forward path?"
>Protoca looks down the center path. "...It is the direct route, but this is a maze... What was the trick again?" She purses her lips in thought
>Port, missing Protoca's meaning, turns her glare to the bushes. "Tachi said there was something in her mind. That Queen girl is here, so I wager something with the flowers. And someone is watching us besides"
>Protoca continues: "Yes, but... I mean. For mazes. There was some kind of trick, right?"
>Tachi Looks uneasy but squeezes Lily's hand to comfort herself. "Go left. That is what I remembered"
>Lily's nails seek to dig into Tachi's armored skin. Then flinch and loosen. Then her fingers clutch desperately, as if afraid to let go
>Protoca eyes the barrier. "But left is blocked off?"
>Port is a little lost in her own head. She looks up towards the 'sky'. "The voices are yelling chess coordinates? I think? There might be others in the maze"
>"We're probably one of the colors. If they're doing things in reaction to us, then we'd be white. I don't know how the coordinates would relate to where we are, though"
>Port's masseters flex as she clenches her jaw. "The only option we have right now is to split up, I guess. Protoca, you have any strong opinion on which way we go?"
>Protoca turns to her. "Tachi suggested we go left... but the left is blocked"
>Tachi's fingers squeeze Lily's hand and she looks down at her old friend with an understanding gaze. "I feel it too, I forgive you if it's making you feel mad at me"
>She looks pack to Port and Protoca. "Stay to the left as much as you can," she corrects

>Tachi's glare focuses on Protoca. "I can't forgive you" She says."It's alien, in my mind. I can't help but to feel like you have wronged me and I want to hurt you."
>"...That's alright." Protoca assures. "I will accept it. I will accept anything. Even if I come to hate you. Even if it hurts."
>Lily whimpers a bit, eyes glancing to the castle worriedly. Her grip remains.
>Port walks as close as she dares to the psionic barrier, close enough she can feel the thrum of it wash over her face in ripples. "Tachi, Protoca and I are going to take the other way. We'll meet up with you on the other side of the maze." Her brow furrows a little as she considers her words. "When we get there, you'll still help us kill whatever's standing in our way, right? Even with the fake hate?"
>"I'll try my best." Tachi answers seriously. "We are friends, we can stay that way even if we hate each other."
>Port gives a curt nod. "We'll be counting on you. Good luck."
>Protoca and Port move in the opposite direction, holding hands.
>The barrier disappears, and a new one appears behind them as they pass between the hedges.
>The voices from the sky ring out again.
>"ROOK TO H1"
>"That Rook can't move! Bishop to D7."
>"BISHOP TO D7."
>Port and Protoca move through the hedge methodically. Protoca uses the reach of her scissors to hack away at the bushes while Port shoots down individual rose flowers with a pistol. They're
>Meanwhile, Tachi and Lily carry on to a right turn with bushes covered in white flowers.
>Tachi Immediately notices the alien presence shift in her mind, feelings of resentment switching to confident trust. She narrows her eyes and squeezes Lily's hand for a moment,suddenly feeling a surge of almost religious faith in her before unknowingly getting a similar idea to Protoca.
[Tachi's Fetters towards Lily and Protoca have been forcefully changed to Devotion.]
>There's a bank of red flowers ahead of them.
>>

>Tachi pulls the pin on her grenade and tosses it into the red flowers ahead of them.
>The blast obliterates the entire bush.
>Port catches herself as a blastwave rocks the garden. "I hope that was just Tachi being Tachi," she mumbles.
"...Indeed." Protoca agrees, her stoic voice tinged with just a hint of worry.
>As Protoca and Port round the corner, they see Tachi and Lily coming up on their right.
>The space between them is absolutely choked with flowers.
>The two teams move toward each other, doing their best to exterminate roses as they go, but their efforts are imperfect. Tachi in particular gets exposed to several sets of roses

>"ROOK TO CAMELOT!"
>"BISHOP TO ALBEQUERQUE!"
>Port glares up at the 'sky' again as she puts a round through another rose. "Now they're just screwing with us."
>She sneers and raises a pistol up to the sky, firing a couple of shots off in the direction of the sun.
>Tachi sheepishly waves at Port and Protoca as the pairs close with each other. Another barrier pops up in her face.
>Protoca waves back.
>Port and Protoca move further up. As they walk, the world around them bends and they disappear, followed by a brief crackle of green electricity.
>Protoca blinks. "This intersection is different."
>Tachi watches Port and Protoca turn down their chosen path, only for the two of them to warp and vanish into thin air.
>"Oh no..." Tachi mutters as she watches them vanish. "They really are messing with us."

>"ROOK TO JORDAN'S EYE SOCKET!"
>"RED BISHOP CHANGES HANDS!"
>"...What about the left hand rule?" Protoca asks, as Port begins to move towards the path to their right.
>Port stops, she looks... a little incredulous. "... You know what? That's probably the best plan we have right now, all things considered. Sure."
>It works.
>In almost no time at all, Port and Protoca are spat out at the exit of the maze.
>The parody castle looms above them, the gate is closed, a rose emblazoned on either door.
>A great tree has fallen across it, barring it shut.
>A huge caterpillar-like monster drapes over the log; a pair of girls are attached to the head at their waists, holding each other's hand.
>As Port looks closer, she can see their hands are actually stitched together.
>A pair of undead soldiers flank the fallen tree, their right arms have each replaced with automatic cannons, but other than that and the ancient rags draping their forms she can't see anything descript about them.
>Port looks the 'duo' up and down. "Are you the two that have been shouting at us this whole time?"
>Voices ring out from the sky again.
>"ROOK, BISHOP, PAWN AND KNIGHT PROMOTE TO KING!"
>"PAWN, PAWN, PAWN, AND PAWN PROMOTE TO KING!"
>"LET US NOW FIGHT TO THE DEATH!"
>The twin(?) Dead make no sound. Their bodies remain stoically still even as their horrific mount skitters up and down.

>To Tachi, their faces look familiar. So familiar. She's seen them before. Both in the mirror, and...

...long ago. In glimpses and flashes, alongside Lily, and [xxxxxxxx], and the others. They were always reliable, and calm, until suddenly they weren't anymore, and their bodies disappeared beneath... You didn't want to think about it anymore.
Their names were Thistle and Thorn.
~~~~~
[Tachi passes a madness check]
>Port is talking again as Tachi zones back into reality. "That isn't right... Pawns promote to Queen, there's only one king in chess."
>Port suddenly disappears, and re-appears five feet to her right.
>"Sore losers," Port grumbles quietly to herself as she brings Lahti up and racks the slide.
>The Lonomine, the monster, moves forward off it's perch. The two soldiers each brandish a sword in their free hands.
>[Battle Start!]
>The Lonomine lashes out by spitting a web of wire-thin threads that glint in the light, however the tree beneath it suddenly rolls, throwing off its aim.
>The two warriors swing their blades. One clumsily trips over the foliage. The other is on course to hit, but its blade is thrown off when Port suddenly opens fire on it.
>She shatters one of its femurs, making it stumble.
>Lily cleaves through the hip of a soldier and brings her sword up and out through its arm, neatly severing it and clipping the thing's helmet in the same motion...
>... revealing a head which looks eerily like Protoca's.
[Protoca fails a madness check]
>Tachi blinks as she follows Lily's elegantly brutal attack. "Now I remember why we were friends..."
>The Lonomine weaves its thread again and nearly wraps Lily up, only for Protoca to rip into her own guts and use them to knock the threads aside.
>The intestines lack the force to stop it completely, but the tangle of flesh is able to knock the threads aside even as the threads cut their way through it.
>Port sites in and fires off a pair of rounds from Lahti. The first round goes through the top of Lonomine's head and exits out the top of the the neck. The second round pierces the mouth and travels down along the great worm to exit down past the fourth pair of legs.
>It's web spinning organs obliterated, the Lonomine charges into the fray; the entire front line devolves into a chaotic melee.
>Throughout the battle, Thistle and Thorn react to nothing.
>Thistle listlessly flops about, staunchly holding Thorn's hand.
>Thorn fires her flamethrower, an attachment over her old arm like the other warriors, but there is no purpose or passion to the maneuver.
>Lily and Tachi are tangled in deep with the two soldiers.
>The Lonomine comes to a staggering halt as Port lays into it some more. Thistle and Thorn lift themselves out of the husk, hands still joined, and walk mechanically off the corpse and onto the battlefield.
>Port fills the two of them with a particularly nasty bit of saturated fire, destroying what little is still keeping them standing.
>As they crumble under the withering fire, a pair of specters appear to fill the space of their bodies. Free from the threads binding their bodies together, Thistle and Thorn split off from one another. Thistle rushes over to Port while Thorn moves to Protoca.
>As Thistle's specter passes through her, Port feels an echo of emotion. A faint image of something. Someone? It blurs away before it can form.
>There isn't time to think about it; the pistols are out and firing.
>As Port rakes Thistle's ghost, she witnesses scattered images. They are never whole enough to present a coherent image, but she sees a large mech. A happy child. Lily. A tower, reaching to the heavens. A corridor. Explosions. Something falling...
>A whisper on the wind.
>"I'm sorry-We're sorry-Please.... my---"
>...and it fades into oblivion, or, perhaps, a better place.
>>
>>69856200
>As Protoca cuts Thorn's ghost into pieces, and then those pieces into pieces, she too sees some scattered images.
>A girl that looks like Tachi, but wearing glasses. A large, mechanical hand, extended palm first. A tower, reaching to the heavens. A corridor. Stone fracturing...
>A whisper on the wind...
>"...failed. Unreliable. Failed... couldn't face them... couldn't face...."
>...and it fades into oblivion. Something, it seems, has at last come to an end.
>Lily, still tangled with the last soldier, is so incoherent with rage that one of her wild swings clips Protoca in the head, but Protoca manages to block it with her coffin.
>As the last soldier is finally struck down - from afar, by Port's pistols - the flowers all around the party wilt. The scattered energy from Thorn's geist drifts upward - almost fearfully, or hesitantly - and then another light gathers together about it and envelops it. Together, they glow brightly. Looking at it, Tachi feels she might just make out the smiling face of a friend...
[Tachi recovers 2 Madness Points.]
>...and then they flex tensely, as if gathering determination, before shooting upward toward the distant peak of the tower.
> All around, many smaller lights seep from the flowers and the soldiers and even the Lonomine. They swirl about, tickling the girls with a comforting warmth, before rocketing away in the wake of their larger kin.
>The lights from the soldiers are slightly brighter, and seem particularly attached to Protoca.
[All other party members recover 1 Madness Point.]
>Tachi, takes a breath, something she doesn't often do, and basks in the feeling of her friends' freedom from their torment. She may not remember them clearly but her eyes water at their lost memory.
>>
>>69856573
>Port sinks to her knees, chest heaving as she lets her pistols clatter to the ground. She sits, watching the lights for a moment before returning her eyes to the ground. Weakly, she begins to shuffle towards Protoca, her ruined hands already undoing the latch around her medibag.
>As the lights dance about, some coalesce around Protoca.
>They gathered together and... solidify, forming almost crystalline, emerald flower vines which wrap about her body and emitted soft light. Two particularly large flowers nestled together as a pair on one side of Protoca's head, much like a hair ornament, and some vines bereft of flowers extended along her arms, littered with thorns which seemed to mysteriously phase through Protoca so as not to hurt her.
>Protoca moves her arm experimentally, observing the vines. "...I... don't know how to feel about this," she deadpans.
>A familiar voice cuts in over the speakers.
>"Even so, even if it's hopeless... I don't want to believe we can't make something to hope for, even if it's with our own hands."
>Another familiar voice retorts.
>"Pointless. Naive. Everything crumbles around you, you know. This world is just a house of cards."
>"Then... we just... build a new one!"
>Cold laughter echoes, mockingly, as the speakers cut out.
>"How cute."
>The girls ignore the Queen. There's work to be done.
>As the lights rise away, the alien influence on the girls' minds fades.
>The group agrees to rest and recover for a brief period before moving on; they're all badly spent.
>During the rest, Port pages through one of the books they recovered from the library.
>It looks like... a journal? She can't tell who wrote it, exactly, but it appears to detail the adventures of Lily's group.
>Roselia, Lily, and Violet awoke within an underground facility. Within they met Thistle and Thorn, and at the end a large piloted mech, the pilot of which Roselia managed to connect to.
>They dubbed the mech and its pilot 'Arachne' as they could not remember their name - after its eight armatures. The mech escorted them thereon. Sakura and Freesia joined them after they were rescued from a group of giant bugs in the waste.
>They wandered, and eventually discovered a series of towers which emitted various psychic signals. Roselia managed to identify the general direction the signals gained strength, and there they found The Tower.
>With Arachne's aid, they felt invincible.
>Seeing the Dead pour forth from the tower, they assaulted it, and ascended it.
>The journal ends there.
>Flipping to the back, Port finds a sketch of the group drawn on to the back cover with names matched above each member.
>Lily is in the front, alongside a girl named Roselia and another named Violet.
>Roselia is a young girl with a rose emblazoned on a half-masquerade mask. She's very cheerful, and Violet's arm is over her shoulders.
>Behind them, in the second row are Freesia, Sakura, Thistle, and Thorn.
>Thorn and Thistle don't look much different, though happier. Freesia is... she doesn't quite look all together, wild maybe. Sakura looks weathered even as she smiles for the picture.
>Behind them, in the last row is Arachne. A towering mechanical construct, well over fifteen feet high if the scale is at all correct. The central structure looks eerily like a coffin, and is about the right size.
>Port looks up from the book and over to where Lily and Tachi are sitting, then back to the picture.
>She pictures the scale in her head, trying to match up Tachi with Arachne's tomb.
>It doesn't fit. Tachi's too big.
>Port looks up to the pair again, then back to the picture, scanning the names but sure enough, Tachi isn't there.
>Death (Present Position) <Reversed>
>It is hard to accept. This tale should not have ended this way. This tale should not have ended at all. Another page... Another page! Write on, and on, and on... This fairy tale shall never end! It cannot end - an ending is disallowed. If it is to have ended... it may as well not have been written. Therefore: On, on, and on... More pages, and more, even if they are all the same. Hold fast to that dream - that fantasy - and it shall become real. It must...
>A card representing change, and the acceptance of its inevitability. All things end, but from that ending comes forth a new beginning. In the reversed position... An endless fantasy. One holds tightly to the past, and refuses to accept it is out of reach. Instead, one clings ever more tightly to those halcyon days, even if their hands break or bleed. If the future is unacceptable, we shall not permit it to be read aloud. Ignore the world, and read the ending one desires instead, again and again.
Some details about the party drawing in the back of the journal, because they were in an odd spot in the notes and I forgot to look for them:
>Roselia's arms are prosthetic.
>One of Violet's is as well. It terminates in a long scythe.
>There's a silhouette of the mech pilot drawn on the coffin; their limbs disappear into the machine at the knees and elbows.
>Sakura is very tall and gangly.
>Freesia is not just wild, but almost agitated. She has a single, twisted horn.
>Thistle is very poised, and wearing glasses.
>Thorn is more boyish, and giving a confident grin.
How do you like your necromancers?
Grandiose old wizards? Automatic Doll Factories? Old men on a life support system that keeps pumping out dolls? Maybe the local necromancer is just a bunch of dolls sticking together spare parts and hoping they spring to life with leftover slime mold and faith.
>>
>>69864309
Anything as long as the DM can make it interesting and/or original. Found out in the more recent sessions of my campaign that the Necromancer is some bitter old shit who's getting on in years and expected his kids to take care of him. When they all decided he was a fuckawful dad and bailed, he created our dolls and their respective savants to either "do their job for them" or find them and drag them back.
Not super ominous, but it definitely caught us off guard
>>
>>69864309
What kind of person would repeatedly create facsimile girls just to watch them suffer?
>>
>>69864309
>>69864784
In the game I ran the Necromancer used to be a doctor who had tried to cure his daughter suffering from a terminal illness, and then when that failed bring her back. All the dolls he created (including the PCs) were facsimiles of his daughter, discarded as failures.
Over the centuries he had grown increasingly jaded and unhinged, and now mostly pitted dolls against each other and put them through hell in order to find the best ones and use their traits to create the perfect doll, which would presumably also be the perfect version of his dead daughter.
>>
bump
>>
>>69864435
Being tasked by the Necromancer to kick the ass of his children, who've gone on to become Necromancers themselves, for being ungrateful little shits sounds like a fun campaign premise. You could have each of them have a different theme, with different kinds of minions and fight mechanics.
>>
Are the little girls integral to the system? Because I've been looking for a system for post apocalypse fantasy with deeply integrated corruption.
>>
>>69866656
Not really, but the system assumes your characters will be emotionally vulnerable and interparty relations have a mechanical effect in form of fetters for other PCs.
Little girls are hardly necessary.
Just make sure the characters are ones that make sense given how the madness system works.
Woo!
>>
Tell me about the times your characters have encountered things worth talking to that were not other PCs anons.
Especially those of you who have not story timed your campaigns.
In the game I played we never encountered any savants. Just sub-sentient horrors, legions, and our necromancer who was only worth talking to in the sense that if we DIDN'T talk to her when she talked to us then she would do horrible things to us.
>>
Have you ever found a post apocalypse construction?
Like a nechromancer or doll group's project or hobby?
>>
>>69869427
My DM actually tries to keep every savant worth talking to, too a point. We were supposed to actually speak to the Valkyrie and try and talk her down at some point; he'd planned to have her mask break during combat and then Protoca would remember her but he didn't count on me decapitating her with an AT rifle every single time we got into combat.
The upcoming combat in the storytime had a similar thing going where dialogue was planned for but not really expected to happen. Tachi was too angry for it to be likely.
I have a hard time making genocidal manics that aren't lovable or redeemable in some manner.
Unless they're female. Then they're always beyond salvation. It's a recurring theme in my games.
As it happens I'm working on a Nechronica-esque mod for dwarf fortress and I'm curious, what would some good low-tier undead be besides humans, dogs, and crows?
>>
>>69873769
>crow
>low tier
not if they can infect things.
but anyways, anything thats a 'typical' animal of a non carnivorous or massive nature. Deer i dont think would be too insane, but wouldn't actually be a pushover either.
>>
>>69874017
All the humans are dead now so infection is less of a factor. Deer might be good though.
This is the first our dolls have heard of the necromancer having kids, so I'm pretty excited to see if our DM does anything with it. One of their favorite parts of DMing is the worldbuilding, so I imagine this detail isn't just gonna be some thing we hear in passing.
>>
>>69864309
I've mentioned in previous threads my NC in the game I'm running is basically a failure at his craft. He subjected himself to the undead treatment on accident, and the player's characters awoke on accident because the NC just sort of lost them and forgot where he put them. They are mostly dealing with the side effects of his incompetence.
There are giant bug type horror in the core book as well as defective savants/dolls.
One of my players had a pet cricket the size of a cat. When playin him I pull a lot from some of the various cats I’ve been surrounded by through my life. (I’ve known a lot of different cats though almost all the ones I’ve lived with have been sweethearts and affectionate.)
Though despite how active he is Jiminy doesn’t have stats as he’s and example of the “pet” form of the treasure part.
In Port storytime they once encountered an enemy with a syringe that prevented protoca from regenerating (or was it being repaired, I'm not sure)?
Not suggesting that as a low tier undead. but maybe for something like undead adders or other undead venomous snakes?
something very squishy but that you really don't want to touch you.
What do you think happens to a doll with trusted companion if they get reduced to just a head, and their regenerating weapon was held in or connected to another section of their body?
>>
>>69875831
My players might lurk here and i dont want to spoil anything for them. I dont have a lot to tell because tge game is pretty slow paced with us not getting a lot done in the 2 or 3 hours alloted for game, (and the party "face" falling asleep at the keyboard every other session...).
But I dropped them in a factory building in the middle of a big city near a very large lake. They are working their way down the building through offices and shop floors, and have so far encountered...
-undead workers with no eyes
-a couple of skeletons who died from suicide
-a room of corpses massacred from something that came through a window
-failing machinery nearly detonating on them
-a servant with blood canisters for eyes and terrible people skills
-a sentient machine that tricked the party into assisting it's own suicide
And they are dangerously close to failing a karma of discovering what the factory actually makes. I'm enjoying myself.
Hopefully one day you or one of your group members will regale is with the story of the doll’s time with this place full of the dead and deathseeking.
Tried to come up with something quick
Court + Romanesque x2
Anticipate (cancel effect of one maneuver)
Battle Mained (+2AP)
Caress (rapid stagger for 0AP)
Clockwork
5 points in enhancements:
T1 Adrenaline (+1AP)
T1 Steel Bones
T2 Energy Tube (+2AP)
T2 Electrigger (attack and repeatable stagger for 2AP)
T3 Embalming (repeatable hinder for 2AP)
from clockwork:
T3 Manipulator (rapid ranged hinder move + stagger for 2AP)
Not sure how effective this would actually be in practice, but with 14 AP she can reasonably stun lock any single enemy before they had any chance to act, and Anticipate can just cancel a single Rapid response that managed to succeed after being hindered.
One of my GMs introduced me to Kruggmash’s Short Fortress Dwarf Fortress series recently. I also tripped over Sseth Tzeentach’s “review” of Dwarf Fortress a few months ago.
I’m starting to think I might want to try it.
My GM says Kruggsmash makes the near impossible look easy. Which I kind of believe since unless he’s going out on a limb to provoke trouble because it’s what his dwarves would do in this situation, or he wants a dangerous and exciting situation to deal with, he does an excellent job of heading off or preventing a lot of things that seem like they would wipe out a fortress played by someone who didn’t have as vast a knowledge of the game.
What do you love about dwarf fortress and what keeps you coming back to it?
>>
>>69880902
I have no idea how effective this would be either but it looks like an interesting configuration to start a campaign in.
>Why is the skill that becomes available for purchase if you invest in being a double Romanesque a skill that mimics the effect of the Brain and Second Head parts?
>>
>>69881178
Because that’s fucking awesome.
It may not grant you something special on its own, but it’s 2 max AP you can’t lose from parts breakage and 2 AP is a lot. Most parts that boost AP only give 1.
So you can either be fast as fuck, or later on invest in fewer AP parts and buy more other parts instead.
>I get the feeling this is a lot less adorable than it sounds. Less cute and more guilt and carrying the wounded.
>>69881020
>What do you love about dwarf fortress and what keeps you coming back to it?
It's basically an insanely detailed fantasy world simulator that happens to have some minigames attached that let you play in it. Everything is detailed down to the emotions of every NPC and the tissue layers they posses. Not only that, but if you're good at modding it you can do things like convert the setting into an entirely different franchise, like Dark Sun for example.
>>
>>69881279
It's not really as great as you think, mainly just for the loss of versatility that not having a second skill set causes. It's alright for one where you expect to be AP starved due to a lack of AP parts or don't plan on being in a game where you're acquiring that much favor, but Romanesque is kind of a weak class on its own.
>>69880902
As far as that goes, it's alright. You're gonna be missing quite a bit with no supports or attack check bonuses, but you can be a massive irritant applying -2's to things and having a decent amount of stagger. Neither Steel Bones or Manipulator is really "best in class" cost effectiveness wise, but with 14 AP, you can afford to be slightly excessive.
If you want to make electrigger more reliable, go swap out a romanesque pick for Baroque since that will let you get a +1 to hit and multiple damage boosts, since you only have a 50/50 hit chance with Electrigger and that can be stopped by a defend 1. Not to mention access to Extreme Mutation.
If you want more support, you go Gothic so you can get a second use of whatever you want, Predator so you can pile on the AP drain when electrigger does hit, and lick jowls for a 0 AP hinder move.
Sometimes I wonder how is it possible to make a game about undead lolis and end up with a perfect system for mecha.
>>
>>69884836
I'm not sure about the fetters and madness system fitting a mech game, but having destructible parts, including a wide variety of different kinds of weapons, instead of a traditional hit point system is equally suited for representing vehicles that can keep functioning even if some of their components get damaged as it is for zombies.
I'm hoping to do a Nechronica oneshot in the Nech Discord this winter break. Posting here to guage a bit of interest.
I had two concepts rattling around in my head:
>Concept 1: Resident Evil 2-3 + Fairy Tale motifs
>Dolls attempt to escape an undead horror infested city, staying off the undead mob infested streets.
>Savants and Necromancers however have a biopunk fairy tale aesthetic going on, with the Necromancer being the Wicked Witch who created most of this shit from her "cauldron".
>Concept 2: R-Type x Nechronica / SpaceChronica
>Dolls are biomechanical mecha musume created from the cloned flesh of the necromantic horrors they fight against.
>Their bodies are outfitted with cybernetic or organic flight modules designed to allow aerial and deep space combat.
Which would you guys find more interesting?
>>
>>69885158
Maybe the 1st one. Second one is very far from normal Nechronica style of setting, which is't a bad thing but for a oneshot keeping things simple is good.
>>69885158
>>
>>69886452
Is it? Isn't there like a ton of supplementary material?
>>
>>69886490
There is, and the translators have been working on fan stuff for a while now, and they have several fan classes translated up on the wiki.
That said, I do agree the Discord is horribly dull. I dipped out after a couple of days.
>>
>>69886590
Every now and then you get someone asking a question about the game mechanics, allowing you to skim off some actual knowledge. I agree on the general dullness tho
>>
>>69886590
Most of the wiki fan classes aren't even translated, they are just ones the Discord circlejerk uploaded there. Electronica and Enigma are the only fan translations. The rest?
All homebrew from the posters in that server, with the quality you'd expect.
>>
>>69873769
What kind of setting or time period are you setting up or using in this mod?
>>
>>69887958
The basic premise is the same as Nechronica. humanity destroyed itself in a massive war that heavily involved the use of undead monsters which roam the world even today. The main playable races is a type of biomechanical skeleton which kills and harvests the flesh of mutants and undead to wear and feel human again. These would be the equivalents of Dolls. They tend to either live in small villages or massive singular cities. Their enemies are their fellow biomechanical skeletons who live in massive towers controlled by necromancers. The other races are sapient machines, semi-lobotomized zombies, feral mutants, and the last few enclaves of living humans.
Any place you can get players, you can probably get them for Nech. You just need to, y'know, try and talk the other players into why this game is something they should want to play and get them past how... Japanese it is.
>>
>>69888886
Getting GMs takes time, getting players is nearly instant. 3 games started since October in the server. All of them filled with players in less than 24 hours. If you want a game really badly, GM it and learn as you play or accept waiting.
>>
>>69888886
Sadly I think unless you coerce your actual friends into playing or sell someone on the idea without mentioning lolis you're not going to get many chances to play.
>As the dolls prepare and rest, the gates loom over them, somewhat ajar. Bright light glimmers within, along with the sound of violins and other assorted instruments in beat.
>Port slides a plate back into place on the back of her hand, setting it with a quiet 'click' as she tests her newly repaired fingers. She spins the hand once, twice, three times. The action is sound. She looks up from her seat to stare at the gate. "One more room down," she mumbles.
>Tachi looks down from the remnants of her barely remembered comrades and nods. "Yes," She says as she skitters over to be close to Lilly. "how many old friends will have to be freed from their pain this way?" She seems to ask the air.
>Port runs through the basic inspection of her weapons, an idle habit by now. "However many the masked girl trapped here, I imagine. Or whoever did it if she didn't. We might expect to fight at least everyone in that picture."
>"As many as need to be." Protoca states, very practically, stepping up to Tachi and placing a steady hand on her shoulders. "But three less, so far." She nods to Lily, and the flowers in her hair glisten in agreement.
>Tachi sags but nods, reaching out and grabbing hold of Lilly for comfort. The last battle had been, tiring. "Have to continue for Hope," she says, mostly to herself. She places a shaking hand atop Protoca's head and takes a breath to steady herself, fingers faintly brushing the flower petals as she lets go.
>The music from the doorway ebbs and flows, the light from within pulsing in beat.
>Port sways unconsciously as she continues her checks, keeping time with the tune. "We'll get her back. The masked girl can't break her. She won't break us." The slide of Port's rifle clacks loudly as she chambers a round. Her eyes are steely.
>Tachi nods, and scuttles towards the doors, warily peaking through the gap as soft tones and pulsing lights drift through
>The girls step into a grand foyer - or, at least, a child's attempt at one. Everything is made of scavenged wood and steel, but the proper shapes are there.
>There are chandeliers of steel, lit by gleaming golden bulbs that pulse in time with the music heard from afar. There are crude statues flanking a crimson carpet on its way to a grand set of stairs that spiral outward and then back together, and there are many masked servants in uniform, which bow together as you they move forward.
>"The party is just ahead." A butler says.
>A maid continues, "You are, of course, most cordially invited. Yes," she eyes Tachi, "even you."
>"Everyone should be allowed to enjoy the festivities," The butler explains, "Indeed. In this place, everyone must enjoy the festivities."
>This room is not brightly lit, despite the golden bulbs. It shines dimly - almost melancholy. The true splendor surely lays beyond the doors above, where light glimmers brilliantly through the cracks. There are no visible side passages.
>"This is, of course," The maid says, "the place of eternal happiness, after all. Therefore: Only happiness is permitted."
>Tachi ignores the puppets. She considers them automatons, only there to mock and deride her as she marches towards her destination.
>Lily follows without missing a beat, eyes clenched against the world around her, hand held firmly in Tachi's grip, as if relying on her to lead her forward.
>Protoca steps in their wake, before pausing and turning to Port, "...Shall we follow now?"
>Port's glare breaks off of the nearest masked attendant. "Yes, sorry. I was..." Her eyes flit back to one of the masks. Her ears swivel in apparent irritation. "I was thinking of something." She starts after Tachi and Lily.
>The masks of the attendants are totally unadorned. These are but the greeters after all, and not part of the party beyond.
>The girls proceed down the hall and up the stairway, then to the doors.
>>
>>69889532
That's the AP/Count tracker. You keep one token on the battle map and one token on the AP scale to track how many AP you have left. Personally I prefer the larger version of the battle map because it integrates AP into the actual areas, but either is serviceable.
>>69889537
>Tachi opens the doors, barely breaking her stride as she marches onward
>As the girls approach, the music gets very slightly louder, but remains unrecognizable, even as they stand at the edges of the doors...
>...until suddenly, as Tachi pushes them open, the world is filled with color and sound.
>The glum hall they walked through is filled with light, and it reflects off many colored glass panes concealed in alcoves along the walls, causing the floor to sparkle, but this holds no glamour in comparison to the hall beyond.
>Here, all manner of individuals dance to and fro to the music. All wear clothes of many colors - some fine, some ragged, and some even barely there. All are masked - with proper masques - and the pulse of the music seems to thrum and reverberate within the girls' chests, almost stirring even dead hearts to beat.
>Many crude stained glass windows sparkle in the light - several missing panes - and even the chandeliers above seem to waver with the beat.
>Above everything, at the end of the hall and standing upon steps much like the ones you now stand upon, they see them.
>The Queen of Hearts, standing tall on her forest of mechanical legs, and the Harlequin, a gangly reed beside her.
>About the Harlequin are several other identical constructs, much like the last time you encountered her. The one by the Queen lifts a long, gangly arm and beckons with a knife-like finger. Even from here, the girls can feel the smile below her mask.
>"Welcome, welcome," Partiers say.
>"Welcome home," Another says,
>"Welcome here,"
>"We've waited, you've been awaited"
My first and only Nechronica game as a player so far was with the group I had previously played MAID with for 2 years.
The game I’m currently running started with me wanting to GM something with a relatively uncomplicated system I was at least a little familiar with, and asking someone who seemed cool in a Nechronica thread if they were interested in playing in a second campaign I was hoping to run. Then talking to them for a time in some anonymous irc server to see if they seemed legit, before actually setting up a more permanent means of communication and getting to work.
Note the levels of vetting and impermanent contact methods. You can find great players and GMs on 4chan, but you are sifting bits of gold from a river of shit. And you don’t want to give shit access to your non-disposable email accounts, discord accounts, or IRC servers/channels.
>>
>>69889850
And by “giving them access” I don’t mean “giving them your login information” (but don’t do that either obviously)
By “giving them access” I mean “letting them know those accounts exist/the contact information for those accounts”.
>>69889649
>Port's metallic fingers tap against the grip of one of her pistols. She gives Protoca a look. "Go loud now, or later?" She ignores the partiers totally.
>One of the dancers quips "What are you standing around for? It's quite rude to refuse such a clear invitation to dance, you know."
>Protoca shrugs, eyeing the dancers warily. "I don't think it should be my call."
>Port visibly tenses as a particularly pronounced horn blast surges through the ballroom. Her ears swing to lay flat against the side of her head. "Fair."
>Tachi relentlessly marches on.
>As she goes, she very nearly crushes one of the dancers beneath a stomping leg. Her steps have started to crack divots into the ballroom floor.
>She slowly begins to move faster as she plows through the crowd. Tachi lifts Lily up onto her back before she can fall behind the steam train of determination Tachi has become.
>"My what a rush," The dancer say. "So eager, so eager!"
>Two Harlequins descend, meeting Tachi's bullheaded charge with elegance and grace as they gently - but speedily - weave through the crowd.
>Port's second hand moves to rest on her other pistol. "It looks like the puppets are going to make our choice for us."
>As Tachi and the 'puppets' close distance, the music shifts songs and picks up speed.
>"It's a shame they probably don't actually want to dance. I feel like I would enjoy it some time," Port quips as she draws her weapons.
>"We can dance later." Protoca asserts, "At our victory party. With Hope."
>[BATTLE START!]
>More dancers seem to come out of the woodwork, even as Tachi and Lily plow through several.
>One of the Harlequin bursts forward, back flaring with light as they swing at Protoca, but misses.
>Tachi charges the Queen, who has moved forward to join their "dance," but suddenly a wire shoots out from the rearmost Harlequin's cloak.
wire shoots out from the rearmost Harlequin's cloak and catches Tachi's charge*
>Tachi tosses a hand grenade at it in retaliation, but the blast simple seems to wash over it.
>The Harlequin's arms extend outward, and one of them - a weird mash of spinning blades - cuts at Tachi's arms and torso as she passes by.
>Lily bursts forward and skillfully parries a Harlequin before scything through its head, knocking off its mas--- helmet?
>There's a burst of something like static about the Harlequin, revealing something much like one of the Soldiers guarding the gate. However, this one's gear seems to be in much better repair.
>Tachi charges back into the fray, targeting the Queen once more with her piledriver.
>She catches a barked order from Port over the din and course-corrects, slamming into the Queen.
>the Queen's many faces have spun, settling on Lily's visage.
>Protoca chops a Harlequin's head off. It fizzles, and its helmeted skull falls off, the helmet coming apart to reveal her own face. It unnerves her.
>Port's Hopper fires off with a metallic 'clack' as she rockets backward, away from Tachi and the Queen.
>The entire ballroom has devolved into a gigantic mess. There is no frontline anymore.
>The dancers keep to the beat of the music, oblivious even as the chaos strikes them down.
>Lily panics and flails at the dancers as they envelop her and she finds herself pulled along. However, she can't bring her sword to bear before they've left her behind and moved away
>Lily finds herself near the Harlequin which recently pulled Tachi out of position, and rushes it.
>She slices elegantly toward its head, only for it to twist inhumanly and cause her energy blade to glance off its armored corset.
>>
>>69890156
>...which is fine with Lily, as she wrenches her blade back and to the side, slicing into one of the Harlequin's arms. Then Protoca's entrails wrap around the Harlequin and hold her in place while Port opens fire to the Harlequin's head, forcing her to shield her face. And then Lily cuts through the arm, and slices its exposed companion off in the same movement
>The Harlequin doesn't appreciate this, and suddenly belches fire in Lily's direction
>The flames are ferocious and swift, and Lily barely dances away in time to keep them from doing more than washing over the lingering plates which were bolted onto her skin. Her dress is a lost cause, though
>She tilts in a certain way Tachi recognizes, indicating the Harlequin. Tachi's instincts direct her to attack the Harlequin, though her conscious mind has not recognized that gesture itself yet
>Tachi leaps forward, swinging her Great Knife, limbs covered in spikes and barbs flailing and tears great chunks out of the Harlequin's legs
>Lily dashes in animu chain-attack style in Tachi's wake as the Harlequin reels from Tachi's attack, dicing through the Harlequin's torso and clipping its head in the same stroke
>Using Tachi as an impromptu distraction, Port fires off a duo of rounds into the Harlequin with Lahti, the shockwaves rocking the crowd as her shells impact into the girl's flesh
>The first round pulverizes what remains of the girl's legs. The second tears through her temple and tears the skull right off the neck, spraying gore and grey matter all over the partiers even as they dance in time
>The Harlequin's throat flickers; Tachi's in motion before the fire can come forth. Her wrist blade rockets out and knocks the head ajar
>Into Lily, whose blade is already in motion. She impales the Harlequin's head with her energy sword, and it falls through it to the ground as she jumps away
>It explodes into flame before it lands
>The Queen's voice rises over the music. "Sakura! Why would you- SAKURA!"
>>
>>69890317
>The dancers swarm, and the music picks up a frenetic beat for a moment... before becoming peculiarly slow and solemn.
>The Queen and her Knights charge Port. Port barely deflects their assaults, but damage is accumulating.
>Protoca and all of Port's friends are pushed far from her by the dancers.
>The Queen snarls at Port as she rends through the girls arms and legs with elegant, menacing motions. In time with the music.
>Not in time with the music, her masks switch wildly between various faces, before settling on one Port recognizes from the book as belonging to 'Sakura.'
>"I am tired... of you ruining my flowers!"
>The rest of the girls grind their way through the crowd to rejoin Port
>As the Queen enters Lily's line of sight, Lily's eyes narrow and her hair almost bristles as the air around her vibrates with her grief and fury.
>Protoca beats her to the punch, dashing forward to snip the Queen in half with her scissors, only for them to catch on the Queen's armor.
>Port fires a flurry of rounds off with her pistol, blowing holes through the Queen of Hearts like swiss cheese.
>Port's voice cracks the din of the music like so much brittle glass. "Now! She's open now! Finish her!" Suddenly the Queen is engulfed in a flurry of steel and lead. Her form crumbles under the assault like cardboard in the rain.
>As she finally falls, the dancers clear a circle for her crumpled, shattered, destroyed form.
>She grasps feebly forward with a ruined stump of an arm, before at last going still. Only a pile of inert fabric, steel, and porcelain now.
>The music continues, but the two remaining Soldiers suddenly go utterly mad and howl. One turns and swings at the other, cutting through what's left of its form before anyone can react.
>They tear themselves apart without any interference from the girls.
>There isn't any time to celebrate the victory. They have to keep moving.
>>
>>69890459
>Without regard to the dancers, the Dolls advance further into the castle in pursuit of Hope.
>In just the next room, they can see Hope, and... someone else.
>They're standing on opposite sides of a throne, facing each other. Both are encased in spheres of psychic energy - one soft and steady like a gentle heart and the other wild and uncontrolled like a cornered animal.
>Before the throne, a line of cardboard soldiers stand in row upon row upon row, and flowers wind all about the room - in particular density just before the throne, where it seems the clash of energies has torn them all away.
>The girls at the end of the room are arguing.
>"That's it! See? There wasn't any point... and now... No future, no happiness, and not even a passing dream! There's no point in anything anymore, so... Just stop!" The unknown girl rants, tears falling from her face like lightning, lashing against the world.
>"I refuse!" Hope exclaims. "You can still be saved. We can... we can still fix things! Just... let me in!"
>The girls can feel it.
>The gardners don't seem to be paying attention to anything that's not in front of them, and the flowers can't follow them. If they just get to Hope... they can make all of this end.
>Port's chest heaves. What's left of it. Her body is just spine between the fourth rib and her pelvis. Her arms are savaged; only the bare structure and her two trigger fingers are still working. Her legs are only the barely functional remains of the Hopper assembly.
>"Hope..." her voice is barely even a breath; her mouth is dry. "Hope! We're here!"
>Hope's orb brightens slightly, but she does not spare Port any attention. Through Port's enhanced vision, she can see that Hope's expression is very taut: She is extremely focused on what she is doing.
>The other girl, however...
>"We know. NOW GET OUT!" Her bubble explodes in size, and the castle trembles.
>>
>>69890636
>Hope clenches her jaw, and her own sphere expands to match the other. The two collide, sending up a gust of wind about them, before the two orbs grind against each other and whittle one another back down to size.
>Thinking... Port squints. Is that... Roselia, down there?
>Roselia yelps in pain as the chaotic energy lances her side.
>Hope looks contrite, but she keeps her expression firm.
>Lily, upon seeing the end of the room, widens her eyes.
>Tachi stares at the strange confrontation. "Roselia I'm back." she says, her jetpack whining as the regenerating fuel system finally recharges enough to send her airborne again.
>Too many emotions flash across her face to identify, and she explodes into motion, kicking up a concussive wave behind her and rustling flowers as she goes.
>The party makes a mad dash for the throne. The gardeners attempts the stop them are half-hearted, and the plants can't follow them. They make the dais with minimal damage between them.
>"Please! We can help!" Hope pleads as she makes the throne.
>Roselia clamps her hand over her ear. "Just... shut up and go away! It's already over!"
>The spheres clash again, and lightning flashes violently through the air.
>The wild energy zaps Port in the head, but there's no visible damage. Everyone else manages to avoid it.
>Port shoulders her way through the last of the poisonbloom, tearing away brambles as she stumbles forward. If she's bothered by the blood leaking out of her ears she doesn't show it. "Hope! We're here! We're here!"
>Armless and haggard Tachi breaks through the poisonbloom, coming to a stop behind Hope. "We made it, you aren't alone any more."
>"...You never will be." Protoca says simply, surprisingly unbattered. The emerald flowers adorning her pulse softly in agreement.
>>
>>69890709
>Lily...
>Hot tears run down her face, and her shattered fist oozes blood as its grip tightens. Her mouth rasps empty air, and she frowns, clenching her hands.
>She shakes her head and turns to look away, flinging her sword as hard as she can in Roselia's general direction
>It bounces uselessly off of the barrier, and the light in it dies as the handle clatters to the ground. Lily wraps her arm to her torso and curls up. >She doesn't look. She doesn't listen. She doesn't breathe
>Tachi, startled by the weapon, looks over at Lily, to see her old, half forgotten friend collapsing in on herself, looking miserable. Unwilling to just let her stew Tachi retreats and retrieves the bunny, holding her with one leg she returns to hope's side. "And we made new friends." Tachi says, hovering protectively over Lily
>Hope speaks up again. "Please. It isn't over. As long as we're here - as long as you're here - it never ended. The pain may not be gone, but... the memories aren't either." Hope begs
>"Shut up!"
>Lily's orb explodes suddenly and rapidly, and - before Hope can react - blasts the other dolls backward
>Port yelps as she's shoved backward by a psychic wave from Roselia. Her spine crumbles in the face of the impact, laying her flat
>"Old friends. Friends!" Roselia scoffs. "Left us behind to die... and... and..." She screeches
>The sound pierces their ears, and their hearts clench in pain
>"...it wasn't even worth it. You promised, but it was pointless. Ran too far and fell behind. Flew too high and fell from the sky... and everyone else ...everyone else!"
>Another wave washes over Port; tears well in her eyes unbidden. "Please." Her voice is ragged. "It's over. We're here." She raises herself on her ruined arms. "We can leave."
>Tachi weathers the scream with a wince and a frown. "New, old, met again for the first time. They are still my friends."
. . .
>Tachi can see it
>She can see the stars, above the clouds
>...and then her vision was only cloud and shade
>>
>>69890789
>"Are we?" Roselia bites, turning to glare at Tachi. "You said you would never let your friends down! You said you would keep them safe! Absolutely! You would Protect!"
>"...but there's nothing now but corpses, and you won't even let us dream."
. . . . .
>She sees a shimmering field. Her fist raging against it. A crack.
>She's repulsed.
. . . . .
>"It's... not like that!" Hope argues. "You're so much more than a corpse! You can still feel. You can still hope. You can still dream!"
>"You broke my dreams!" The girl shouts, still glaring at Tachi.
>But she looks away, and sinks to the floor in her bubble. "... You were my dreams..." She says quietly.
>Her bubble shrinks as Hope's expands.
>Port crawls forward, back towards the group. Her pace is uneven and lurching, as her legs and Torso are only barely connected.
>"There... was a barrier... I tried so hard..." Tachi nearly mumbles, staring off into space.
. . . . .
>That black spot, growing further out of reach.
>"INTERNMENT COFFIN COMPROMISED. CRITICAL THREAT DETECTED. PREPARING: EMERGENCY PRESERVATION MEASURES."
. . . . .
>"It doesn't matter. It was wasted. Had our happiness. Wasted it. Had our chance. Wasted it. Had our lives. Wasted them. Had our dreams..." Roselia sniffles. "...just end this nightmare."
>Hope's barrier dims as well, and she looks at all of you. She seems so helpless. So lost.
>Tachi steps forward, "I failed to protect you." she says, folding her many legs into a 'sitting' position close to Roselia. "I'm sorry."
. . . . .
>"ERROR: OCCUPANT MOBILITY COMPROMISED. INTEGRITY COMPROMISED. DAMAGE PREDICTED."
. . . . .
>Roselia's hollow eyes stare back at Tachi. "Then make it right."
>"I will." Tachi says solemnly, staring back at her. "But I won't end you. You may hurt now but you can always find hope." She looks over her shoulder at the gathered dolls. "I did..."
>Roselia barks a piteous laugh. "...That's a terrible joke." Her wild energy gathers about her heart.
>>
>>69890870
. . . . .
>"CALCULATING... DANGER THRESHOLD EXCEEDED. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS OVER-RIDDEN."
>It was cold. Why was it cold? And wet. And she couldn't see anything.
. . . . .
>Tachi's leg suddenly lashes out, pulling Roselia into an awkward hug, "Yes it was an awful pun but you can stop now. There doesn't need to be any more fighting and dying."
>"No fighting?" She tilts her head, as if the concept is strange. The light over her heart gathers to a central point, brightening. "That's impossible."
. . . . .
>"EJECTION COMMENCING. . . FAREWELL, Tachi,"
>She could see it above her. The invincible armor. It was glowing red-hot, and its shields... were centered on her. The burning trails made it look like an angel.
i a m s o r r y
>She fell. She fell from the sky. Far across the world, in a cradle of light.
>She watched it burn the entire way, until it struck the top of the tower, and the tower itself passed from her view.
. . . . .
>"As long as he's there, it'll be impossible. That's what we agreed. That's why we tried. Are you saying that was pointless? Meaningless?"
>"It will never have been meaningless." Tachi says resolutely. "All the pain, joy, hope, and sorrow are all parts of what makes us 'Us'. We might lose parts of that, or even all of it, we might even die, but we will have always been, always have affected the world around us. Brought Joy to a lonely stranger, Kept Hope alive, see the past and wish for a better future."
>"There'll..." Hope starts, haltingly, as if afraid she'll be interrupted, "always be a brighter day. So... let's all walk toward it together, alright?"
>Port remains quiet, but she clutches the brass locket tucked into the fold of her left sleeve and remembers Joy.
>"...Some of us can't walk anymore." Roselia says emptily, as if just to disagree.
>"Sakura... threw herself away, like she always did. Thistle and Thorn just wouldn't come back. Lily..." The rabbit pointedly doesn't react. "...Lily wouldn't listen."
>>
>>69890981
>"If you want me to live... If you want 'us' to live... then... then..." She balls her fists up, and her eyes flare with violet light, "...give up! Just give up on killing him! It isn't worth it, and it won't help anyway!"
>Port's jaw clenches. Her grip around the locket tightens. Her metal fingers scrape against the metal of her pistol as she fidgets angrily. "You're talking about the Necromancer, aren't you?"
>Roselia nods. "It won't fix anything."
>"It'll stop the war." The gun in her hand starts to tremble. "It's still going on, even now. The Protectors are still fighting. The giant undead are still being made by someone. It has to be him."
>"It'll kill the world." Roselia's counter is swift and unshakeable. "Everything will turn to ash and dust and finally end." She pauses. "I guess that would be fine too."
>"No it won't." Port's tone is flat. "It doesn't work like that. If he's said as much then he's a liar. Or we'd never have met Joy."
>The light on Roselia's chest flares.
>"I bet you he's scared. He know he can't fight forever and wants us to stay away." Port's eyes are far away.
>Tachi's grip tightens in shock, but before she can warn anyone, the light shoots into Roselia's heart.
>"If you can make a future that doesn't end in ash and dust..." Roselia declares, the violet energy seeping across her chest, leaving nothing in its wake. "...then maybe we can start again. If you're not lying again, if you don't fail again." She smiles. "I guess we'll discuss the matter. I'll be waiting in oblivion until then."
>The end is nearing her throat. "I certainly won't be going to Heaven... Sorry Tachi. Until we're bor--"
>And the rest of her vanishes into light. The glimmers drift and swirl about Tachi, before shooting away toward the top of the Tower.
>The music from the ballroom stops. The lights go out within, and the dancers subside to the ground.
This.
And following on >>69886452
Once you've played like 6 combats or so, you don't really need to ask too many rule questions as the game is easy to parse Builds in the game are "solved" and you could easily get someone to tell you how to build a character to make the most out of whatever part or skill or property you want. Potential story ideas and enemies and all that jazz carry the problem that you can't speak about them there if your players are there because spoiling it. All that leaves is retelling tales of your own campaigns, which takes time and not many people want to constantly retell the tales of their own game, so that's why even people who play the game all the damn time don't talk about it all the time in the server.
>>69883376
It was a unique game for a number of reasons, one of which being that the PCs weren't actually dead, the phases were split between being actual humans and the "treatment" for the disease we had involved waking up in an alien world with heavy floral themes. The natives/wildlife were all extremely hostile and the former had their own language and didn't like foreigners even if we did attempt to talk to them as they chucked spears at us. The natives followed/worshipped what the patients called "flower girls" and later found out that the word in their language for'em basically meant "Master chosen by God." This lot was very territorial and tended to be more inclined to get into slap fights with each other than talk.
We found another girl who had apparently been there a long time and through an agreement, she lead us to a place run by one of these flower girls who actually took the effort to establish a place that had some semblance of law and neutrality, making it a bazaar in the ruins of an old city. It was nice and illuminating, though our reception was probably helped a little by one of the PCs being somewhat planty themselves, making some of the natives believe they were a flower girl.
>Port stares at the empty space as Roselia disappears, and then traces the wisps as they rise. She sighs. She looks tired. "It's so cold today."
>Protoca's flowers pulse, and a fleeting, momentary warmth washes over the Dolls.
>Tachi nods, turns towards Hope. "at least we saved Hope."
>The girl in question is staring at the lights drifting away. "...She said she wanted me to save her." Hope says. "The one who brought me here. But... it was just such a dumb way to do it!" She turns, eyes watery. "Why?!"
>"People can do stupid things when they're desperate, Hope." Port is still staring at the trail the light followed as it flowed away. "And you can offer a drowning person all the help in the world, but if they won't take your hand then it doesn't matter." She shifts a little, straitening her torso in it's place. "I don't know if Roselia wanted to be saved, even if her friends wanted her to be."
>"I don't think her friend wanted to be saved." Hope answers, sounding frustrated. "But Roselia... she wouldn't be saved without her friends."
>Port sighs again. A memory flickers over her mind. It's an old one, her first. But she'd forgotten. It's vague, and incomplete, but she remembers when she last saw it.
Can you hear me?
"Maybe we did save her anyway. Oblivion is a spook."
Yes, I can hear you.
>The flowers have all wilted. The castle is quiet - the corpses are dead.
>A spark of green catches their eyes. Behind the throne, a pair of steel doors rest innocuously, blended into the wall.
[[IT IS A CHOICE]]
[[WILL YOU BRAVE THE TOWER?]]
[[OR WILL YOU WALK AWAY?]]
Fin for this arch of the story. See you fine ladies and gents next episode!
Whoops, rest of that disappeared, and a quick note in case it wasn't clear, while in the "treatment" phase, we were running on typical nechronica rules as far as getting torn apart and all that goes, though we certainly felt things more than you'd typically expected and damage taken during treatment caused intense pain in the corresponding organs when you woke up from it.
Anyway, while we were there, the head honcho sought us out, because our friend is the only foreigner who has swung by the Bazaar before and now she came with friends. She announced her presence by snapping the arm of another flower girl that was about to start a fight with us, believing we were there to start shit despite our insistence we weren't. She kept a cool, maternal demeanor even as she twisted the arm further to force an apology before setting it back and letting the girl run off.
Image limit's reached, but here's the picture the GM used for her. https://www.pixiv.net/en/artworks/52182404
As you could see, flower girl's a bit of a misnomer for her, though it seems ones that getting to whatever their equivalent for adult hood is pretty damn rare as they're fond of killing each other for one reason or another. Her name's Marigo and she acts in an aloof, but maternal manner. She even had other flower girls sticking around that she seemed to be a mother figure for. Pretty nice lady all told, very patient with children, including the youngest of the group asking her all sorts of silly questions. Just don't break the rules or intentionally question her legitimacy to be in charge.
>>
How did you guys find/look for players? Generally pitching it goes okay but I lose people at the cover.
>>
>>69891701
If they lose it at the cover, they won't last through the book. As for finding people, you either recruit people who trust you enough or you find at least one person who likes the concept, because they'll probably know more people who do and you fill out the group that way. Just be sure to lay down what you're actually fine with people getting up to.
>>
>>69891813
The cover is much more extreme than the book's content.
>>
>>69891861
Then edit the PDF to remove the cover and hand it out if you think that. Personal experience has been that the more common issue is with people going "ew pedo" than "ew gore."
>>
See you next thread.
>>
>>69891157
Dang. I’m not going to be able to read this before the thread dies.
Thank you PortAnon, Protoca player/GM, and Tachi’s player.
>>69891861
Literally both of your issues would be solved by using Hetza's art. It's got a lot more teenage-ish or at least less "loli" looking girls and it's gore isn't as... "gory".
>>
>>69892239
It'll still be in the Archive for a minute even once the thread dies. You should also be able to find it on the fireden archives by searching up any of the character names (bar Lily, maybe).
>>
>>69892342
Why did you say that name.
>>
>>69892342
Ain't an issue personally, got both a group and the ability to pitch the game to the right people, but if someone wants to do that, they're free to replace everything they can. Not to mention the prudish will still take issue with all the PCs being underaged girls so getting your undies in a twist trying to appease those types is a losing battle.
I was a part of 3 maid campaigns. 2 were long. The third was actually a Mistborn campaign and switch systems from MAID to a different one after session 1.
