File: KARANDUUN ENG.pdf (1.44 MB, PDF)

Hey /tg/, want to share more stuff, if that's okay

A few years ago (around... 2 years ago now?) I wrote up Karanduun, an entire RPG about playing as Filipino Epic Heroes

The August of 2019, I released it in Tagalog/Filipino

and now I'm putting it up here in English. Attached is the full on 15 page rulebook that is mostly OSR-influenced. The main schtick now is that the main heroes begin not as Karanduun, but as normal people, and slowly make their way up and eventually become Karanduun by performing epic deeds "worthy of song".

Also the setting is now set in the forbidden Seventh Layer of the Multiverse, the Layer of the Lord Creator, who was killed by the Holy Trinity, thus allowing all other creatures to go to it. Paraiso is inspired by places like Sigil, Amber, the Astral Sea, Throne, Athas, and the Vortex World. Also Spirited Away

Have a look see if you're interested. I'll post the 13 Classes I have planned for this as I go along.

>Also the setting is now set in the forbidden Seventh Layer of the Multiverse, the Layer of the Lord Creator, who was killed by the Holy Trinity
Fuck. As a Filipino, something about that concept just hits the right fucking spot.
>Mostly OSR-influenced
Hell yeah. I could probably convert this to Godbound or Scarlet Heroes with a bit of effort then. Can I get a link to the Filipino version so I can read ahead?

finding Filipino anons in this board is always a blessing

Unfortunately the Filipino version is largely different in tone and (mostly) setting. The main characters are powerful off the bat, a la Godbound. Although the main conceit of a multiversal setting is still there, the concept of "Paradise is broken, Bathala is dead, the Holy Trinity killed them" is not there currently. If you do still want to see that, I can drop a PDF here!

In the meantime, here's the first Class: Alagad, the Disciple of the Violence
>>
neat idea
>>

I glanced through that PDF. The cover art is nice, but the rules seem boring. I remember a mecha Flip game being banded about here once, though I don’t know if this was that.

Sure, I wanna check it out.
>Avatar of Balance. Commit 1 Gahum. As long as that Gahum is committed, the Alagad takes upon themselves a many-armed, fire-tongued, stareyed Manifestation of Violence. While in this form, the Alagad cannot be harmed by mundane weaponry, and all their attacks and hostilities against beings with less Gahum than them always hit and inflict the maximum amount of Wounds, no matter what.
This is some Kill Six Billion Demon shit, I love it.

>>70459303
Maharlika, yeah! I'm the writer of that. It's currently in layouting and art stage stuff, and is free for playtest.

This is a different game.

can I have your opinino as to why it seems boring?

>>70459358
Here it is. It's a bit more... PbtA than OSR
>>
>>70460036
Do you have it in English or Spanish? Also, could you post that mecha thing?

I read the first pdf, and it sems quite cool. A quick question, Do you drop in Tier when you spend the Gallum that carried over to that particular Tier. Like, earning three Gallum, getting into Tier 1 and spending 2 then .
>>
>>70460999
You can find Maharlika over in the mecha rpg thread!: >>70437102

>Do you have it in English or Spanish?
The first pdf up there is going to be the official English release, since it has the updated setting lore and gameplay sensibilities.

I will most probably not publish an English version of the Tagalog ver. System-wise it's basically just Dice Pool PbtA with Qwixalted style Charms

>>70460999
It's Gahum btw, not Gallum. And no you don't fall in Tier! As long as you earn that much Gahum, you rise in that tier. I should add that in newer revisions. Thank you!

It's kind of sad that you don't realize how even classless games still have classes. You probably should learn a little about games before spouting out "baby's first incorrect and contrarianism-inspired opinion" so casually.
>>
>>70458982
Bumping this for later as I'm very intrigued.
OP, do you have a blog or feed where you post updates? And do you have the cover pic without the text on it? Who's the artist?
Also I wish you best luck with your game, it is rare to hear of non-western games around the internet, but there is probably so much good stuff out there I'm missing.
>>
>>70468338
I do! I'll be using it to release little snippets of Communes, Wild Encounters, and Universes that you can find in the Karanduun setting, along with random tables and some other stuff: https://ulilangwakwak.wordpress.com/

It's also my generic RPG/OSR exploring blog so. Next post I have lined up is a "Karanduun Aesthetics" post similar to what I made with Maharlika

>>70462884
It's not completely done yet, I'll have the second class, the Albularyo, up here for preview later in a bit. I have 11 more Classes to write afterwards. And then, a GM Zine with a bunch of random generators

Speaking of random generators, would you guys want to chip in for a 1d100 Nature Spirits? They just have to be: 1. Alien Fey Nature Spirits a la Kami or the Kodama from Princess Mononoke, 2. Have one thing that they are a manifestation and one food that they love. 3. One thing that they can give to players.

I'll start:
>1. A spirit of storms, loves lechon (roasted suckling pig), a temper as wild as the natural event they manifest. Can give the ability to control the wind once.
>2. A spirit of broken glass, loves ash covered dead fish. Constantly depressed. Can give a piece of glass that can stop a being from moving for 1d4 hours.
>3. A spirit of ironwood, loves used steel. Hardy, probably loud like a Goron. Can make a person invulnerable to steel and iron weapons for 1d4 days.
>>
>>70469175
>4. A spirit of an abandoned forge, loves sea glass. Cheerful, inquisitive, but a bit scatterbrained. Can give a person a small flame that neither ignites what it touches nor goes out when smothered or doused, providing light and warmth for 1d4 days.
>>
>>70469312
>5. A spirit of a mountaintop, loves stories (especially jokes). Quiet, wise, but good-humored. Can give the ability to ride the wind once to a location the person has been before.
>>
Don't you die on me.
>>
>>70458982

This sounds and looks based. Thanks OP.
>>
>>70469448
>6. A moon spirit, broken but mad. Loves wine, particularly rice wine. Can give the ability to project one's self in another place within 60 miles once.
>7. A malaria spirit, stupid yet clever, seeks only to spread its virus. Loves the blood of pigs, unsalted. Gives the ability to make one as small as a mosquito for 3d10 minutes.
>8. An explosion spirit, shaped like a small floating mushroom cloud. Prefers flesh of monsters, especially those with fur. Gives no ability, but when provoked, explodes violently, annihilating everything within a 30 feet radius.

>>70471531
Big thanks anon, been working on it for a while.
>>
>>70472363
>9. A harvest spirit, jolly and capricious. Loves wicker. Surrounded by six flying wooden heads, holding different fruit within each one's mouth. Each fruit heals as a CLW if freely given, but causes serious intoxication if stolen.
>10. A spirit of the stars. Loves haunting songs and melodies, but only in minor key. Calm and spacey. Can give accurate directions to anything under the heavens, once.
>>
>>70469312
>>70469448
>>70473993
Absolutely love these. I like the harvest spirit a lot.

The spirit of stars one is great too, although I kinda fear it might be useless in the main setting, Paraiso, since it's basically the highest layer of Heaven. Although that's easy enough to change
>>
>>70473993
11. A spirit of relaxation. Fattened up and easy going. Eats anything sweet, makes the players feel very well rested.

12. A spirit of Waste. Disgusting and unpleasant. Loves eating leftovers, gives the players a foul stench that repulses living creatures within 15ft.
>>
>>70475310
>12. A spirit of dance, made of dozens of thing brass legs.Very manic. Likes jingling items, such as bells or chain. Can make a person able to walk up walls and across wires, but only so long as they keep moving.
>13. A spirit of grain, industrious and tired. Likes sweetened liquor. Can fill a persons' bag with fresh bread once a day for three months, but no longer. Does not work in the summer.
>>
>>70474280
An alternate change for the star spirit then, it could grant aid in directions via lighting the stars beneath the clouds as a path?
>>
>>70475972
>14. A spirit of drums. Rotund and looming. Loves animal hide. Can grant humans the ability to let loose a bellowing roar that stuns others.
>15. A spirit of hornets. Jagged and furious. Loves chickens, especially cooked in honey. Can make a person able to cause shooting pain with their nails and teeth for 1d4 days.
16. A spirit of the tide. Slow and ponderous, like a giant crab. Loves black sand. Has tiny shells attached to its back that contain 2d10 liters of water each.

>even classless games still have classes
There's a huge difference between classic class-and-level structures and having several options which are considered in the meta for filling a given role

In a proper class system, two people using the same class/subclass are likely to be playing almost the same character (especially specialized options like barbarians, bersekers, or priest/clergy). Classless systems allow less-common ideas that might not have been done justice with a class, like having one guy being a damage-dealing face, or another being a hacker who can also cook explosives and heal people, or another being a wizard who beats people with a stun baton, and so on.

Also classless tends to allow much more believable and incremental branching into new roles. Rather than just waking up one morning and saying 'hmm I've been a simple marauding soldier disembowling people with my sword for 15 years, but you know what? I'm also a wizard now, this is my spellbook with six spells in it, and my magic wand, let's go cast this magic flawlessly and without error from day 1 through the rest of my career" you instead end up with a much more gradual and time-intensive progression (start out bad at it, have to train to get gud, learn one spell at a time, etc) that doesn't break lore nearly as much

t. played multiple classless games
>>
>>70478710
>Also classless tends to allow much more believable and incremental branching into new roles.
In my experience, though, this can be a detriment when it comes to party structure. If you realize a few sessions in that you're missing something vital, it's going to be another few sessions until someone's able to pick up that slack. Whereas a class-based system allows you to at least start contributing in that area more or less as soon as you identify it.

So the game is anti-chtistian?
>>
>>70493373
i wouldn't say anti-christian exactly, more like anti-colonialism (of the Ph) is what i'm getting at

The "Holy Trinity" in the game isn't even explcitly the Christian Holy Trinity, although they're definitely inspired by it. They're a trinity in general, and I thought it'd be neat since the Philippines was technically colonized by three major nations: Spain, America, and Japan during WWII.

So the current "Paraiso" is a reflection/satirization of current Philippines: broken, have a flimsy national identity, a shadow of its former "glory", ruled by not so competent lords. At least, that's what I'm gunning for
>>
>>70493373
I think it's just playing with the current tensions between Catholicism and folk belief that's still present in the Philippines. The majority of us here are Catholic yet we're well aware that this religion was brought here by a colonizer. Kinda leads to an ambivalent feeling towards colonial Spain. Hell, we're kinda ambivalent with America too since at least they brought teachers. Japan's the only one who didn't benefit us much.
>>
>>70493583
That mouth of his looks disturbing...
>>
>>70494199
Really? We (as in everyone else except me) seem to be very hardcore Catholics but has a mixture of pagan Filipino traditions/folklore mixed without really questioning how blasmous it is and contradictory it is to the religion. Tho, I guess there's the eglesian christians. I was a volcano evacuatee myself so instead of learning Catholicism in the Philippines, i learned in US without my parents' childhood upbringing with native spiritual stuff
>>
>>70483591
The problem with DnDrones talking about their "experience" is that it boils down to playing single edition of DnD that happend to be "new" when they've entered the hobby. They not only rarely played other games, but even other editions of DnD.
Thus, your experience is non-existing, while only a complete retard that only ever played DnD would be able to claim all games have classes, since he can't even fucking imagine a classless game, to the point of sprouting such shit.

What does "Karanduun" mean, anyway?
I don't know why but it reminds me of the tibetan "Kundun" (which is a title of reverence towards the Dalai Lama and means something like "Important Presence"), but probably it's unrelated.
>>
>>70499086
In the Metro, Taglish is more common anyway. Tagalog is weird: make it too "deep" and most folk won't read it at all, even the educated people since educated in the Philippines makes you more adept at English and not Filipino unless you major in it.

>>70498635
huh, you're right. damn

>>70501079
Karanduun is an old Bisaya word (not sure if it's still used today_ that means "Worthy of Kandu" or "Someone who is sung Kandus". Kandu (or Siday) is the Bisaya word for the Epics sung by those trained to do so. So Karanduun basically means "Those worthy of epics".

>>70498498
That's a bit tricky. If you can get your hands on it, you should definitely look for Maximo Ramos' stuff on mythology. Filipino Mythology is super varied since each of our ethnic groups have their own Mythologies, and we have a shitton of it.

Here are some readings on the origin myths amongst the mountain from H Otleey Beyer folk:https://www.gutenberg.org/files/46024/46024-h/46024-h.htm

Mostly personal taste. My old setting was a bit too crass and on the nose, and I felt like it aped K6BD a bit too much. I took a step back and applied more Filipino Folk Catholicism, Folklore, and Mythology to the new one. The old one feels like an old shame to me.

>>70505312
Please put it to good use, and any questions can be asked here!

Anyway, as I'm writing the Babaylan Class, I'm going to start putting here the Revised Gahum lore and rules.
GAHUM

Gahum is the Divine Breath of the Dead God, enveloping and burning the entirety of Sansinukob. While Kaluluwa is the Soul and Alimaduan is the stuff that makes up the material of the soul, Gahum is the soul in action, power coursing through their veins.

A person that can use Gahum is called Gahumnon.

All people have the potential to become Gahumnon. The difference is that only some people get the Gahum unlocked. Similarly to gasoline, Alimaduan is a dormant, ignitable state. Something powerful needs to light the Alimaduan, to ignite it. When done so, the spark opens the metaphysical alchemy within every souled creature, and thus a flame is born. Gahum, the flame breath of Batala.

This act of unlocking Gahum is known as Pagsiklab.

There are many ways to initiate a Pagsiklab. Most of the time it comes when eating the cooked liver of a powerful being that has accrued huge amounts of Gahum. Other times it done during a point of psychic or spiritual awakening, during a pilgrimage, or a religious act. Sometimes it can be forced, through intense training, or eating of powerful Alimaduan filled food.

Anyone can become Gahumnon, all they need is to activate the Pasiklab.
>>
>>70508000
Once a Pasiklab has been done, Gahum now flows freely. But to control Gahum is another topic entirely. The Gahumnon then becomes well versed in Puwersa, the technique and discipline of manipulating Gahum. Puwersa comes naturally to most Gahumnon as they accrue experience and knowledge.

In addition, Gahum is reactive to the Gahumnon’s emotional state. The more intense their emotions, feelings, and passions, the brighter and more powerful it becomes (as long as Hinga is active). This can lead to powerful amounts of exertion. In addition, every Gahumnon has a burning soul-color, their personal halos, that tinges and colors their body, enveloping them in a cocoon of spiritburn. This burning soulslight is called Usbong, and it appears first form the outermost parts of the body—ie the tips of their hair, their fingers, their toes, slowly making its way to the liver. Each Usbong color is unique for the Gahumnon.

>>
>>70508022
There are five Puwersa techniques, which is what each Gahumnon must learn to use and master:

* Hinga (Breathe): Let your Gahum flow. By doing this, the Gahumnon brings their body to top state that it can. The Hinga technique is the first technique to learning Puwersa. Hinga also lets one’s Usbong, the natural color of their Gahum, shine through. Hinga is required to be active to use the rest of the Puwersa techniques. Turning it off also makes your Gahum undetectable by normal means.

* Kalasag (Shield): Let your Gahum calcify. By doing this, the Gahumnon turns their flowing Gahum into a natural body barrier, known as Kalasag. This can be put up at a weaker state to be perpetually open, or it can be enhanced to defend a single point in the user’s body with a stronger shield.

* Ramdam (Sense): Let your Gahum feel. By doing this, the Gahumnon lets their Gahum smoke out other people that have Gahum. Those that have Hinga activated will be snuffed out by this technique. This is a popular way to seek out monsters and other magical creatures or things as well.

* Pumatay (Kill): Let your Gahum die. This is forceful suspension of the flowing Gahum flame. By doing this, the Gahumnon’s physical presence becomes hard to sense, their natural scent and footsteps disappear. In addition, with their Gahum gone, they become more defensible against spiritual and mental attacks, as they have less open avenues for metaphysical attack.

* Magpahayag (Express): Let your Gahum burn. This is the expression of your Gahum, and by activating this, you can express your Gahum type, and manipulate the world according to it. This is one of the most important Puwersa techniques, and can only be used when Hinga is activated.
>>
>>70508047

Each Gahum is different as well. Each Gahumnon that has their Gahum ignited awakens to a single kind of Gahum control. The four Gahum kinds are as follows:

* Pattern: Pattern Gahum can create entire objects from their Gahum as well as perfect things, making those frayed or weaker stronger.

* Fraying: Fraying Gahum allows the Gahumnon to fray, weaken, and damage animate and inanimate objects using their Gahum

* Ruling: Ruling Gahum allows the Gahumnon to extend their Gahum and manipulate objects about them, moving them around.

* Dynamic: Dynamic Gahum can transmute inanimate objects from one object to another completely.

These four are reflections of the dead Lord Creator, the Destroyer, Ruler, Creator, and Mover of all Creation.

The Filipino RPG community is more active than I thought. Maybe it's time for me to bite the bullet and join a role-playing club or something.
>>
>>70512159
It really surprise me rpgs aren't more common wordl wide, specially in poorer zones. You maybe can't afford a ps4 or a gamer pc, but I'm sure you can get some dices and print some basic rules.
>>
>>70512196
Oh yeah, that's certainly true. /tg/ and it's share thread has been a big help in that regard too. Although I do make it a point to eat the prohibitive shipping costs and get a printed book for games I run regularly. I'll buy maharlika anon's Maharlika and Karandun too in print if only I can get decent minis and maps for Maharlika.
>>
>>70512196
You need a couple different things to align, any one of which may be off. Time, for one thing, which may be lacking if you're overworked or just getting by; friends for another, who also need to have their schedules open, and share your interest in a game; and other resources.

I'm an American, my job currently has me in Japan, and while the Japanese RP scene exists, it's pretty different from the American one I'm familiar with, and (from what I've seen) persists on a smaller scale. One-shots are more common than full-fledged campaigns, for example, because everyone's so busy, and most Japanese RPs I've picked up to examine have been created with shorter games in mind. D&D (to pick a power brand) exists out here, it's been translated into Japanese, but the books take up tiny sections of game shops, and dice that aren't d6s are hard to come by.

It's not a lot of different things, but its enough basic things with overlapping issues that I can see how it hasn't caught on. Which is a shame, cause I think it could easily be a universal, accessible pastime.
>>
>>70512159

Time is an important factor, yeah. It's crazy here in the PH especially when the big economic centers have horrible traffic, making traveling to play spaces a nightmare.

Bad internet speeds don't help online play either!
>>
>>70512382
From what I remember, a lot of Japanese RPGs are based around "club play"--basically, the idea that it's something you do with a school club, in a classroom, after school, rather than something you organize on weekends or whatever. So the time slots are very specific and it's structured around the assumption of episodic play lasting for no more than a semester or MAYBE a school year at most.

Thanks for the support anon! And yeah, like I said in the first Maharlika thread, one of the only reasons why I was able to get into RPGs as much as I did was because I found the share thread. Buying RPGs in the PH is super expensive, and rare to boot.

Glad people find it interesting. It's based off that old Christian book "Pilgrim's Progress" which we had to read in our Literature Class since we studied in an overly religious Christian school.

Hey maharlika anon, since a PC only regenerates at most 2 gahum per day (relaxing and resting in a safe space), does this mean that PCs should usually get lots of downtime once at double digits of Gahum level of power or should the GM and PCs keep pushing for more action so that the PCs can eat more livers so they can get more Gahum?

>>70543788
Also the setting primer here makes me comfortable enough to make shit up and run and run a solo game, so can I ask for some rough guidelines for Alimaduan? Humans offer 3 per kill, how about say an Ogre or a Giant or a Dragon?

Also since you're into OSR, have you read Scarlet Heroes by Kevin Crawford? I got that for the solo rules, but it was a pleasant surprise to get a SE Asian monster bestiary with it. It has stats for Tikbalang, Mananaggals and Tianaks even.

It depends on the intensity of the campaign, I suppose. I made it so that comfy, ghibli-esque style downtime is just as important as going on adventures, but if you're going for something hugely more intense, the latter would be more apt, since the would-be Karanduun would be scrambling for more power.

>Also the setting primer here makes me comfortable enough to make shit up and run and run a solo game, so can I ask for some rough guidelines for Alimaduan? Humans offer 3 per kill, how about say an Ogre or a Giant or a Dragon?

I'm honored and think that's some rad as fuck shit. Please update me how it goes or what changes you do or the system that you run it with.

I think a good guideline would be if it's as big as two humans, it would give 6 Alimaduan. So measure it by humans.

>Also since you're into OSR, have you read Scarlet Heroes by Kevin Crawford? I got that for the solo rules, but it was a pleasant surprise to get a SE Asian monster bestiary with it. It has stats for Tikbalang, Mananaggals and Tianaks even.

I've heard of it but I haven't ran it or anything yet! I do recall it was the first iteration, I think, of the rules that eventually became Godbound, so that's more or less perfect, since this version of Karanduun is heavily influenced by Exemplars & Eidolons and Godbound.

Thanks again so much for the interest, tg-bros.

>>
>>70552781
>30 alimaduan
>10 Gahum
>1/3 of the way to being a Karandun
That seems right to me. You're consuming the animating force of a freaking dragon. Besides, to me the real fun stuff is gated behind being Karandun anyway. At that point, you're supposed to start carving up an empire for yourself in ruined Heaven. If I'm gonna run this though, I'd probably make up some rules about alimaduan gain limits. At a certain point eating the livers of man-sized opponents shouldn't help anymore and you'll have to hunt bigger prey.
>>
>>70552781
>>70553048
If the dragon you're up against is like, Fatalis from MH or something, sure yeah makes sense. I'd probably impose some sort of limit to larger things like huge kaiju since you can't eat their gigantic liver all at once, probably. But I didn't want to impose that as a hard rule on the mechanics.

>If I'm gonna run this though, I'd probably make up some rules about alimaduan gain limits. At a certain point eating the livers of man-sized opponents shouldn't help anymore and you'll have to hunt bigger prey.

I like that. Really interesting.

here we go, the Bagani, master of weapons and ! Nearing the halfway point. Changed the class roster as well. The new classes will be as follows:

Alagad: A disciple of violent arts.
Albularyo: A faith and folk healer, master of medicine.
Aswang: Shapeshifters and flesh-eaters and madness gods.
Babaylan: A spirit medium and friend to all spirits and gods.
Bagani: A heroic spirit warrior who wields weapons and allies to victory.
Makata: Singers, speakers, and incanters of Exploit into being and truth. The basest and purest of Exploit users, they speak magic into existence.
Mangkukulam: Master of the Exploit, masters the specific sub-art of it called Kulam, which is dedicated to subverting nature’s laws of sympathy.
Manlilimos: A beggar and master of Anino, a sub-art of the Exploit that focuses on manipulation of shadow.
Mangangalakal: A trader, broker, economist, and bureaucrat.
Panday: Smiths, forgers, creators of steel, magic, and wonders.
Prayle: Mendicant priests, missionaries, and friars. Toiling all the same under a broken heaven.
Sugo: Representatives and courtiers, speakers and masters of misdirection.

Anon, super wierd question, but maybe you can help.

I'm a notorious accidental name stealer. The biggest empire in my donutsteel OC fantasy is something from final fantasy tactics, and I didn't realize I stole it for 5 years. About a decade ago I made another setting with a god named "Kalanduun". Is "Karanduun" something I might have ever come across? I just want to know if it might have been base on something I saw and subconsciously stole or if its pure coincidence in such a unique word.
>>
>>70569404
Either way, he's selling the game short. Heck, the game isn't even complete and it already sounds more fun than a lot of 'official' products I've read
>>

Nah, Karanduun is a pretty fuckin unique word. It's Bisaya, and I'm not even sure that Bisayans even use it anymore. If you search up "Karanduun" on Google, you'll come across previous iterations of my Karanduun setting (back when it was a 4e setting) and other stuff written by me.

Even I only discovered it when reading through Pre-Colonial history books dedicated to Pre-Colonial history.

>>70571188
I really like the new Gahum system in here, it's very flexible! It's almost like a super simple version of Nen. I can also see it being hacked into Wuxia systems with their use of Qi. Like, every martial artist has certain basic things they're proficient of in Wuxia flicks like floating and high jumps, so commiting Qi to activate that ability in a fight makes mechanical sense.

Heck Karandun by itself is pretty much Cultivation, Filipino style since it's about increasing your Gahum. Instead of increasing your Qi through medicinal pills or meditation, you increase your Gahum though consuming your enemy's power and achieving songworthy feats. You've got a neat system going on here.
>>
>>70571999
Big thanks! And yeah, I noticed the Cultivation parallels too. Wuxia is definitely a tertiary inspiration, so it definitely can be played in that!

Hey bois, have a spoiler for a monster that's definitely going to be a staple for the bestiary:

Alright,iho,so imagine this:
You’re finishing up cleaning by the wayside of your farm. It’s dusk, you can barely tell one person from another by now. Then you smell rotten eggs and carabao shit all of the sudden.
You hear clapping. You look up, and you see a large dog. Terribly large. It’s running really fast, has gigantic ears making the clapping noise, and a rubbery tail behind it. It’s running towards you.
An aswang is usually nearby when you see one. They’re it’s pets. They keep these demon goat-dogs in clay jars.

Appearance:Has huge ears that it uses to create clapping sounds. Has a naueseating odor. Somewhere between a huge dog and a goat. Has larger hind legs than forelegs, making it look like kangaroo. Has a long, prehensile tail.
Gahum Tier: 1 (3)
Wounds:1d6 (3)
Found in:Anywhere except cities.
Armor:6
Movement:60 feet per turn
Yield:2 Gahum for its liver. Its ears are well wanted in Communes, selling for 2d6 bulawan.
Alignment:Earth
Attacks:(1d4)Claws and Bites.
Attack Adjustment:0
Damage:1d6 + 1
>Razor Tailwhip:As an attack, the sigben can lash out up to 15 feet with its tail. If it hits, the target suffers damage and must succeed on a Might check or fall prone.
>Nauseating Odor:When a sigben approaches, all beings that can smell within 25 feet of the sigben must make a Might check. On a failure, they are bombarded with a disgusting smell and suffer +1 Malas on their next roll.
>Accurate: Imposes +1 Malas when testing to evade its attacks.
>Evasive: Imposes a +1 Malas when testing to hit it.

OSR means Old-School Revival/Renaissance. It's basically like, a calling back to design principles/style of the old school RPGs like BECMI, and B/X, the old D&D editions back when they were still in TSR. Usually they're focused on rulings and player skill than character skill and hard rules.

>The Basic Rule goes like this: Whenever attempting to do something that the Arbiter deems risky or might have a consequence, roll 1d20 + appropriate Attribute + Any other modifiers. These are called Tests.
>On a 13 and above, you do the action without any fail or consequence
>On a 12 and below, you do the action or whatever you were attempting, but something gets in the way, something hinders its effects, or you suffer its consequences.
So if I'm reading this correctly, without any attribute bonuses, a PC always has a 40% chance to succeed cleanly. Max bonuses only push this to 65%. Suwerte and Malas are thus pretty motherfucking important since even 1 Suwerte is a huge bonus.
>Arbiters! When in doubt, resort to Malas and Suwerte. If a character is being hampered in one way or another, give them Malas. If they are being benefitted or helped by some ability or an outside force, give them Suwerte. Do these even when the ability doesn’t say so (or especially when the ability doesn’t say so). It’s you’re game. Set the mood as is.
Which means this section needs to be fucking highlighted, especially for GMs. They should be liberal with Swerte if their game is gonna have a heroic tone. As is, a level 1 PC has less than coinflip's chance of hitting a mook. If they fight this smelly and speedy dog-goat demon thing, they even have less of a chance.

Or maybe I think I'm meant to approach combat in this game with a PbTA attitude. 12 and below rolls just mean the enemy exchanges blows.

Yes, more or less. Misses can be narrated in any way, but it's one where no Wounds are inflicted. But what you're reading is correct. PCs in the beginning are scrappy heroes with 1% of their full power. Instead of that burning breath of Batalang Maykapal, they only have a spark: one that they must feed to make grow. I wanted the beginning PCs to be only marginally better than an average person in the multiverse. It's also going to be the in-setting reason why the PCs must band together: They're the only ones that can help each other cultivate the breath, and they can sense each other's Gahum, and they're weaker than the things that might want to steal their Gahum.

>Which means this section needs to be fucking highlighted, especially for GMs.
Definitely. I also realized I hadn't left in a particularly important function of Gahum, which is basically letting you add +1 Suwerte or automatically succeeding on a Test. A v0.6 is coming up with all the classes and rules changes ready.

Also, I need some opinions on the Armor rules: as of right now, I'm thinking of changing the "ablative HP" style of it down to pure damage reduction: (Light reduces 2, Medium 4, and then Heavy 6, I suppose), and then turning the Kalasag Puwersa technique into the one that gives an extra HP bar (5 Kalasag per Gahum Tier I guess)
>>
>>70590721
What?
>>
>>70591472
Hmmm, this is strictly off reading the book since I haven't tested it in play yet, but I like the ablative HP system since different classes get different HP totals. That sort of system worked well for in OSR games that seperate HP into Meat Points and Stamina/Luck Points (Esoteric Enterprises and Wolf Packs and Winter Snow), so I can see it working here. With that said, the new option models heroes with a constantly on Gahum Aura shield well instead of having a reactive "oh fuck" shield like the current Kalasag. Maybe you could model that too in the current system by ruling that the HP from Armor only comes into play when Hinga is activated, so Karandun aspiants always run the risk of being ambushed and killed in the split second that they're vulnerable... Seems pretty on tone to me since the game as it is reminded me of Exalted 1e, where there's a gritty baseline (40% chance of suceeding) that the Exalted and Karandun can cheat with Essence and Gahum.

If teamwork is encouraged, do you think you should add Aid rules for Suwerte like the ones in Maharlika for tests? Or would that step onto the toes of classes like the Bagani?

fuck yeah thank you so much, Exalted 1e is one of the main things I'm basing Karanduun off (the newer version even has different stats that's a bit more like that... more on that later.)

I think I'll stick to the ablative HP system, yeah. It makes sense anyway and has that feel of "whittling down" like in Ex3.

>Maybe you could model that too in the current system by ruling that the HP from Armor only comes into play when Hinga is activated, so Karandun aspiants always run the risk of being ambushed and killed in the split second that they're vulnerable
I like this idea but enemies and NPCs also have this ablative HP armor so having that as the reason kinda makes it seem like they can use Hinga as well. I'll stick to it as is.

>If teamwork is encouraged, do you think you should add Aid rules for Suwerte like the ones in Maharlika for tests? Or would that step onto the toes of classes like the Bagani?
Definitely this. I'll add it onto the Suwerte or Malas section or something.

Mabibili ba to sa Neutral Grounds o Fuly Booked?

Ayos! Wala bang kickstarter? Gusto sana nang larong ganito na parang Godbound pero noong nakita ko na Filipino folklore ang tema nito naging interesado ako. Masyadong magulo and Exalted para sa akin.
>>
>>70595038
>Masyadong magulo and Exalted para sa akin.
Ganito na rin ako ahaha. Dati lab na lab ko Exalted pero wala na, pagod na utak ko.

Sana nga may kickstarter! Mamamaraan pa ako para magawa yun, para may pambayad rin ako ng art at kung anong achuchu.
>>
>>70595038
Shit, astig nga kung mag kickstarter. Medyo living the dream na yun, since mas malayo talaga mararating nang even $1K sa Pinas haha.
>>
>>70595178
tru, pero kung may maraming avenues, you never know no?

Anyway sa ngayon, tapusin muna yung libro, saka na yung Kickstarter, sobrang down the line pa yun.

Congrats anon! I'll check it out later. Now's the time for the time consuming and hard bits, the Bestiary and adventure making tools. After the bestiary, it'll finally be testable though.
>>
>>70596086
Yep. I'll probably be asking around here for ideas as well on the adventure-making tools, but I'm currently excited at the idea of cutting my setting up into little nuggets of gameable lore and implied lore.
>>
>>70595735
Loving the old tapestry illustrations! Hoping we'll see more of that in the bestiary.
>>
>>70595735
Nice!
>>
>>70458982
Has anyone created a character yet?
>>
>>70596239
Yeah just like maybe a layout/genera description of a oneshot adventure along with the bestiary works well. Throw in a few adventure hooks to get the setting across and maybe some trap/encounter examples.
>>
>>70596239
Nice.

You might also want to get someone to read over the PDF, needs a bit of grammar and spelling sprucing up.

English, please.

>>70607823
Definitely. The game is super rough right now.

>>70603495
Am working on an adventure for it definitely. Taking inspiration from The Raid for it.

>>70607845
Taga-Cubao lang ko pre. Kung malapit ka, kita tayo?

Planning on running online playtest game too. Currently might have it this Sunday, January 26, 1pm onwards (PHT/UTC +8) for those interested over on the Discord: https://discord.gg/JFGpsMh

>>70597377
Those are from the Boxer Codex! I think they're Public Domain so it might be fine for me to publish with it. I do have a couple of illustrations coming in, and I'm thinking of putting the completed beta up on itch.io for an open beta of sorts, for free, but open to donations with donations going to paying for art in the beta.
>>
>>70610393
Taga Cubao rin ako. Do you go to expo Also? Cubao kami usually nag RP
>>
>>70610393
Ah cool, glad to see they're public domain. They're pretty evocative, if there's more pictures like that to stick in that'd be pretty cool. They're very effective at conveying the tone for free images.

hey bois, i feel like i've hit a wall recently. perhaps burnout since Maharlika took so much creative energy.

gonna take a while before i can finish the bestiary and GM stuff. feel free to let the thread die in the meantime, kinda feel bad now for posting an unfinished game here.

next time a Karanduun thread is up it'll surely be completed. thanks bois
>>
>>70612667
Shit man, a basic rule system and 13 classes in about a week ain't nothing to scoff at. Take a break and don't burn yourself out. You've already given enough content to inspire anyway. Take it easy.
>>
>>70612667
No worries bro, I'm thankful for all the updates over the past week and for the system, will definitely try it out. Honestly it's been pretty inspiring to see something so cool churned out with so much content, has really inspired me to put work in on my own stuff. Thanks maharlika bro, looking forward to seeing more whenever it's done, no rush.

>>70595018

Take time to look for vinta's/balangay. Mist of our mythology involves oceans and water-ways being an archipelago. The vinta might give you some inspiration.

27. Biag spirit. Spirit of legends, loves long heroic tales that end in either victory or tragedy. If tragedy, grants party a tid bit of crucial bit of knowldege about an upcoming encounter. If victory, grants the party a random advantage in an upcoming encounter. The singing of the legend must consume 2d6 hours

>>
>>70612693
Yeah, we can let this thread die and you can just make a new one when you come back. Anyone else object to this?
>>
>>70620023
Well for me, I'm just really happy this exists. I love that there's a genuine Filipino rpg thread. I didn't expect for it to be finished or anything.

>>
When it's in beta we should organise a play test group.
>>
>>70624871
We could run one group in English and one in tagalog, to see how it carries.
>>
>>70622761
That mecha one, right.
>>
>>70458982
What’s your favorite class and why?

You should make lore about the islands in the Philippines that literally disappear in high tide and reappear in low tide
>>
How'd you stat Talim?
>>
>>70629177
That’s a thing?
>>
>>70632456
Yes. The Philippines is made up of thousands of Islands. There os no exact count due to them sinking and reappearing

Anyone have any advice for a newfag now?

Neat.
>>
>>70629297
never heard of them.

Good idea. Not OP, but still.
