"Freakshit" races: yay or nay? If you include them, should they be regarded as freaks and oddities, excluded from polite society, or be at least partially integrated, with their own cultures and civilizations?

Include what you like. Don't include what you don't. That's all there is to it.

Don't use a race you don't like as an excuse to say "I hate [group] and want them to suck", whether it stands for a real-world analog or a group of players who play races like the one you've selected. Only cuckolds and faggots do this.

Yay.
>should they be regarded as freaks and oddities, excluded from polite society, or be at least partially integrated, with their own cultures and civilizations?
Integrated since they're intelligent humanoids and will think similarly too use in many important ways. It also entirely depends on the race.

In my own world the pseudo Greek horsefolk are an ancient race and were responsible for preserving civilization during an asteroid winter due to their potent magics. Nowadays theyre a fallen race who have mostly either integrated into human lands or sit on ages of dangerous magic in their petty island kingdoms. It is entirely common to see the horsefolk in port cities across the warmer climes.

Dragonborn have a great dragon empire and the arrogance that matches it. They also share the love of food, women, wine, and gold that nobles and dragons both have. To share the friendship of a Dragonborn is to have a bro for life and share in his riches, utterly unlike dragons and nobles.

Tieflings and Aasimar are more common than redheads, with the latter being regarded as strange by superstitious rural folk.

Gnolls have a deserved reputation as demon worshipping monsters due to their more civilized folk exiling their undesirable criminals, psychopaths, and demon worshipping cultists westward into human lands. Thanks to the recent establishment of trade lines near their territory, to bypass the stranglehold of the dragon empire on trade to notIndia, stories of more decent hyena people are beginning to spread.

If its a PC race its obviously playable with minimum drawbacks via hatred by other races. I dislike needless racism and DMs trying to emulate grimdark English peasants from 13th century in what is a completely different world with a far more fantastical nature. Fantasy racism isn't fun or interesting, its just an excuse to indulge in nasty behavior.

>Yay or nay
Yay
>Regarded as freaks and oddities
Depends. Tieflings are seen as debauched sinners who indulge in hedonistic pleasure, whereas half-dragons and Dragonborn are outright hated by elves and might be attacked on sight since Elves have a hatred for dragons and humans. Orcs vary depending on whether they have a brand on their face or not, the ones with a brand - one that can only be made by their clan and is a closely-guarded secret - are seen as tolerable while ones without are feared. Goblins are generally seen as mindless beasts, with the top 10% of them being intelligent to any degree and the top 1% being possibly capable of socializing with other races in a non-violent way. Half-dragons and dragonborn are both dragonspawn, which parent is male determines which you get, and they get on well with humans but not with elves. Lizardfolk are ostracized and seen as barbaric monsters who kill and eat anything that isn't them - and they are, usually. A rare few might meet with someone and not kill them and expand their horizons.

I personally like fantasy races, especially weird, interesting, or fun ones- but I prefer them to be low magic as much as possible. I don't mind people wanting to play something not a human but it needs to have near human weaknesses and few if any magical powers or innate "weirdness" since that detracts from the core struggle and challenge of the game world.
>>
>>71372959
Vamp has seen some shit.
>>
My only issue with races is a mechanical one. If some part of their physiology allows them to bypass the limitations of the human body that ultimately guided the structure of the rules then it isn't going to fly as an option for a player character, even if it has some sort of drawback to "balance" it out. If your bat creature alien race thing has stubby little wing flaps and big ears that let it hear better than the av-er-age bear then sure, but flight and echolocation are off the table even if it means you're blind and can't run.

I prefer a low number of races, perhaps even two, and each having a dramatically different silhouette then the humans/each other. Put extra effort into the race's unique equipment, lifestyles, mindset, and culture.

Huge race lineups composed of human lookalikes who act like humans but with a gimmick are awful.

That I'm using this as an example pic shows that I don't often get what I want.

It depends highly on the backdrop of the setting honestly. I always roll my eyes at some guy immediately saying, but you'll be killed on sight blah blah blah, ignoring that for such creatures to be playable they generally need to be able to do and communicate similar things to the standard races, and likely have existed and interacted with the other races for thousands of years.

Yay. Degree of integration is proportionate to how freakish the freaks are. I generally wouldn't even have Dwarves commonly living side by side with Humans. >needless racism
racism is never needless, it's the only rational response to clown world
>>
>>71372884
Isn't that the job of worldbuilding to decide?

Like, in a cosmopolitan setting where people are just a few hours' airship ride away from the next continent, goblins and orcs have been domesticated and housebroken, cities sprawl across the world and the wilderness has dwindled to a few pitiful pockets kept around by elvish environmentalist groups for exploitation purposes while tomb robbers finished looting the last dungeon centuries ago and now only tour groups enter them, your weird aye-aye man character is just another citizen whose species got added to the melting pot way back when.

In a darkest Africa-style setting where civilization is limited to a few human colonial forts and the various weird jungle tribes seem to be trying to outcompete each other in the cannibalism and summoning pagan god ritual olympics, that same aye-aye man is probably going to be shot on sight unless a bunch of humans can vouch for him.

And in a third setting, where the aye-aye reich has conquered the world, your character *is* polite society, and is likely snubbing the stupid uppity elf bard who keeps talking about equality of the species.

I never understood why humans, elves, tiefling, giant etc are called races. They're clearly different species, and the things that usually get called "subraces" or "varients" are races. An elf us a different species to a human, and a wood elf is a different race to a drow.

No such thing. If you play a race well and give them traits beyond "oh wow I'm so strange and oppressed woOoOoOoOo" they can add spice to a party and lead to some interesting encounters. The real thing we should be complaining about are the nogames tumblr refugees that post pinups of tieflings and think they're quirky for listening to a single episode of Critical Role. Literally just play your characters, you fucking gremlins.

Theme. Species as a term is too scientific and modern to properly fit into the themes of a "medieval" fantasy game. Race works but it also comes with a ton of baggage and issues.

Personally I like what Pathfinder 2 has done and switched to Ancestries to replace race, Heritages that replace the sub race system entirely, and turning separate sub races into lore. The word Ancestry fits the medieval theme better than the more recent and baggage filled word of race.
>>
>>71372884
In a like spirit world setting I think all of these things could be included. In a generic medieval fantasy however I think that might be weird.
>>
>>71387789
Perhaps only because you're not used to it. If you're trying to shoehorn them into standard pseudo-european fantasy then yeah it'd be jarring, but you can definitely have something that fills the same role but allows for a much greater diversity of aesthetics and actors. Something like Kenshi, Morrowind, etc.
>>
>>71386971
What do you mean there's no such thing? A character can be deep and still look like an abomination that people might want to kill on sight (or at least be afraid of) because they don’t know any better.

Depends on the setting. When it comes to sci fi ayysI prefer them more freakish than if we played fantasy. So freakish usually that you can't really have them as PCs. Also important to remember that playing a non human doesn't automatically make your character more interesting, especially when it functions like a coat of paint on the same personality you use for every character.

What I'm saying is actual racists - specifically those who say things like "lol you can't be racist to white people #killallwhites" and then go around saying "this thing is racist" even if it is provably not as well as the more candid racists on the far-right such as our """good friends""" over on /pol/ - have diluted the term so much that its losing its meaning - "Discrimination based on race". I think this is bad.

I once sent my players to a far planer realm inhabited by an advanced civilization of crystalline spider people. (stick your hand in holes and win fabulous prizes!" They where celebrities for a few weeks but eventually they where eventually hunted down and expelled from the plain because "those four armed freaks don't belong here among normal civilized people!"
>>
Weird races are fine if integrated into the setting
Core races are bad if not integrated into the setting.
There is nothing that makes an elf or myconid inherently good or bad for your game besides being well established in the lore and background for the setting.

Lazy kitchen sink settings that just include every race without giving any thought to where they come from or their history are the worst. If a DM wants to put the work into including 20+ races with full history and racial interactions that's great, but most aren't up to that kind of task.

"Freakshit" is just a lazy way of saying the above.

No, but providing the fact that if a race is so rare in-setting that seeing it would be a 1 in a million oddity.

If the freakshit race is common, than it's not freakshit.

As for Dungeons and Dragons, it depends on how you personally perceive how cosmopolitan the setting actually is. If you think that Waterdeep would have all kinds of weird crap wandering around to the point that it isn't weird, than opening the book to anything is fine.

>Introduction
>The Cosmic Music

>Somewhere far out in the universe, music spread throughout the cosmos. This music that created the stars, planets and other celestial entities was called Ulth. This melody of creation moved into the void and could be felt and used to create things out of nothing. When this music reached the Moon, it caused forests to grow, and on the Earth, still covered with black dust, it planted a seed.

>CHAPTER 0 : The Tree

>Long after the death of the forests on the Moon, an incredible thing happens on Earth. A golden stalk slowly rises towards the sky. Its roots dig into the earth to drink from the heart of the planet. Its nacreous leaves capture the sun's rays, its trunk is covered with a thick bark that fluctuates with the gentle rhythm of the organism's movements. The rustle of giant leaves cradles this silent part of the cosmos until the day its trunk breaks. All that remains on the planet is the base and the roots of the tree. The roots wither quickly, allowing the heart of the planet to pour out onto the surface, filling it with a black ocean that only the top of the base of the tree protrudes. From the wound of the tree, the saturated sap of Ulth pours into the water.

>Flowing into the black ocean, the Ulth contained in the sap of the Tree creates the first primitive beings, bacteria and zoas that begin their existence. In this silent and blind world, the organisms evolve, multiplying and becoming ever more complex. On the submerged roots of the tree, large coral reefs form a complex ecosystem teeming with life. Meanwhile, on the base of the felled tree, the only land emerging from the waves, stupid and blind beasts crawl through mud and puddles, living a purposeless existence.

>CHAPTER 2
>The Era of Titans

>From the silence of the abyss of the ocean appears a large underwater species: the Titans. Intelligent, these beings connected by a hive mind explore the ocean expanse. Soon, they become aware of their situation. Alone and unable to leave the waters, they join together to focus on creating their children through their matrix, which can shape the Ulth.

>After creating increasingly complex beings, they set about the task of giving birth to other developed and intelligent creatures: the Giants.

The first giants to be born are the great flying whales. Designed to leave the black ocean and explore the skies, the Titans endowed them with an immense memory and a strong sensitivity. In second place are created the Stellar Giants. Their role is to explore the ocean's only supercontinent, the land of Uhia. Able to create life and very curious, the stellar giants also leave the ocean.
>The energy deployed to create pure life from Ulth is colossal. By the time the first giants leave the sea, nearly all the Titans have already died of exhaustion. The last few of the species, left to fend for themselves, once again feel the enormous burden of solitude falling on them.

>In a final effort, they create their last children before they perish forever. These children come into the world alone, only able to feel emptiness and fear. They are the first of the Goulths, the great black octopuses, blind, imprisoned in the abyss and forgotten by history.

>When the Titans disappear, the whales cry for the first time and vow never to forget.

>CHAPTER 3
>The Era of Giants

>In only one place the black ocean gives way to the land, the supercontinent of Uhia. It is on its bark cliff beaches that the Stellar Giants emerge. When they arrive, Uhia is vast and deserted, only populated on its coasts by primitive archaeo-creatures, just recently out of the water. The Giants then begin the exploration and colonization of the land.
>By singing the music of the Utlh, they create the silent proto-plants that become forests, and also the belligerent proto-insects to disseminate them. Secondly, they give birth to large worms to dig up the soil and make it fertile.
>Also created are the insatiable Narraks to regulate the insect population, the Mogs who dig and fertilize streams, the Erx swarming forests and insects, and the wise Onchyres .

>At the same time, the great whales are exploring the sky. Once they reach a certain height, some even lose their lives if they get too close to the stars. A few reach the Moon and contemplate its snowy and white surface.
>To help them in their task, the Stellar Giants give birth to intelligent creatures evolving by photosynthesis like them: the Protos. Their task is to go where giants cannot: far underground and up in the mountains. They come into the world from the earth, planted by the Giants as seeds. The Protos are equipped with agile hands to create tools and help them with their tasks.
>In the same way as the Titans, working the earth exhausts the Stellar Giants. One day, an epidemic spreads among them. They're completely decimated. The Protos, deprived of leadership, continue to perform their duties. Mechanically at first, then, forgetting their origins over the millennia, they learn to think for themselves.

>The Proto Era

>From the giants, the Protos learned of the existence of Utlh, thanks to machines. They were able to build matrices capable of creating life in small quantities. People of craftsmen and builders, they erect gigantic cities. In their thirst for construction, they cut down forests, raze mountains and dig into the ground. They create many tools and give birth to living things like Cyclops and Skinny People to serve them.

Reaching adult size in eight years, the first modern Men are built. Robust, these Men require few resources, they quickly become a widespread tool throughout the Proto society.
>Modern men perform the tasks of miners, farmers, factory workers. Soon enough, the Protos are looking for new sources of energy for their machines. They have been observing the great whales for a long time, they come to consider them as one resource among many others.

>One day, a whale is shot with a Proto cannon. It crashes heavily to the ground in a death rattle. Its shell of scales perforated, its red blood spills on the black sand. Thus begins the Hunt. The Protos cannons take the whales out of the sky with their destructive rays, then the human workers cut them up with their wide whale knives.

The Men arm themselves with their tools and kill the Protos who, frightened by the number of humans, use their cannons.
Jesus Christ, cease your fagottry and begone of our hobby

Aside for light hearted humor and some orc here and there, all the non human races in my campaigns are rare, monsters or part of different civilizations.

This madness of full 8 parties with 3 elementals, 2 demons, 1 robot, a dwarf and an homosexual needs to end.
>>
>>71372884
I don't have a problem with fantasy races.

I don't even have a problem with "multicultural" places provided that there is an in-lore justification.
For example in baldurs gate 2 the state city of Athkatla in Amn also called "the city of coin" was a multicultural place were ton of different races and people traveling with their demi human pets like orcs and niggers.

Now I don't want a world were every fucking settlement has a rainbow color of races.

It really breaks immersion when you have a demon dude, an angel dude, a water elemental dude and a giant minotaur walking in the country side and being treated like anybody else.

LGBTQ faggotry transformed a cool rpg element like "hybrid races" and completely ruined it (like verything they touch).
The situation is even worse than the elf and drow pandemia of the past.
When elfs and half-elfs become playable races everybody and their mother player an elf or half-elf.
When drows become a playable races Dritzz clones runned rampant in every place.
Now every session has some elemental or tiefling character.

If everybody is special then anybody is, any sane dm would ask for a party of 3-4 humans, 1-2 elf/hafling and at most 1 "special snowflake" race.
>>
>>71372884
>"Freakshit" races: yay or nay?
Depends on your setting, duh. Anyway, I'm of the opinion that keeping freakshit unplayable is what makes them actually interesting - you can throw in bunch of bizarre philosophies, abilities, political and belief systems, all of which will be lost as soon as players get their hands on them. I'm generalizing, of course, but if there's one thing players are interested in, it'd be how the race "plays" - what's it good at or how does it synergize with whatever classes you have (this is why race and class combinations are, in my opinion, such a total bitch to balance; and no, stat adjustments are not a way of balancing things, if anything, it handcuffs your race into one or more classes), with all this stuff about your Totally Original Elves that are insectoid in nature, secrete gooey, pheromone-like substance, and get off by rubbing their ears, won't matter in the slightest. On the other hand, if everyone is freakshit, then nobody is freakshit, and your setting/world will quickly spiral into magical realm of nothingness, where princess has a purple head, tieflings are wacky paladins, and everyone is basically a human with a rubber mask bolted to their heads, so why the fuck are racial tensions even an issue?

>That's when Man discovers Utlh, scientists study it and find out how it can be captured and used to power machines. They explore the incredible creative possibilities of this space music to solve the problem of natural resources. They build the first auto-fab, a large organic machine fueled with Utlh, materializing food and raw material from nothing.
>The veins of the auto-fab sink into the ground and propagate to create other devices. Soon, a gigantic organism connected by nerves, ganglia and mechanical veins spreads, building a skin of concrete and metal around it. Man rushes onto these providential machines and sprawling dwellings are built around each auto-fab. This immense semi-conscious organism, a titanic labyrinth of streets stretching almost endlessly, is called the Daedalus. Humanity is crammed into it, every crumb of land is absorbed. A time comes when the Daedalus covers almost all of Uhia, leaving only a few barren deserts in its centre and uninhabited cold beaches on its periphery.

>Each housing block is supplied by an auto-fab producing a nourishing paste for all the inhabitants, and raw materials for them to make what they need in large underground factories. Each wall is traversed by the blood vessels of the organism, into which boiling oil flows, thanks to which humanity survives and multiplies.

>The first auto-fab gets sick, then a second one... The Daedalus' inhabitants panic and attack the neighboring communities. And one day, everything explodes: Quantum bombs, bacteriological typhoons, polyphonic rays and Utlh bombs ravage and kill in a matter of minutes.
>From this brief war, Humanity is reduced to a tiny number. In addition, a large part of the auto-fab organism is dying, the walls of the buildings are covered with dried blood. The liberated and uncontrollable Utlh saturates the atmosphere and creates new and strange forms of life. From this absolute hell, a new world emerges.

All this does not prevent some people from taking the risk by running away from the hard life in the community. These adventurers of the Daedalus serve as mercenaries, guides, merchants or explorers.

>A part of mankind finds refuge in the Underworld, the underground territory of Daedalus. Subways and caverns descend to depths never before explored, from which strange creatures sometimes emerge. In fact, the Heart is still inhabited by the descendants of the auto-fabs owners, imprisoned in their own exclusion zone which is gradually starting to become defective. The inhabitants of the periphery of the Heart and their robots are constantly patrolling to avoid any incursion from outside. The inhabitants are very few: a few families equipped with robots, cultivating their own fields, scattered, serving as guards and farmers. In the centre, the privileged castes continue to live sheltered from the horrors of the ruins. This privileged caste, by virtue of living near the central auto-fab, has become a hybrid species of Man, deformed in size and greatly improved in longevity. Having become sterile like almost all the inhabitants of the Heart, they use their auto-fabs to create clones to replace the guardian inhabitants of the periphery when there are too few children.

>In the remotest places, there are legends of people or places disappearing. During the War, time was broken. Through these faults, the Ulth flows, faults open and close, strange phenomena occur. Utlh takes an almost visible form and spectres escape from it. These faults appear invisible or in the form of optical aberrations leading to "paths" going from epoch to epoch, from world to world. People who have travelled them talk about white corridors and stars, the presence of a big eye and screaming ghosts. Those who have returned tell that they saw the end of men there, a great fragrant forest, a white desert and a lonely tree drifting in the sky. Rare are those who have seen such a phenomenon and even rarer are those who have returned alive from one of these faults. These people were called Travellers and lived the rest of their lives forever incomplete. A part of them was lost in Time, their eyes became golden and their senses were sharpened when their sight disappeared.

>Character interaction and struggle isn’t interesting. Fluid relationships and interspecies dynamics aren’t interesting.
Where exactly did I say there wasn't anything like this? I didn't. I said needless racism based on an ahistorical idea of racial hierarchy formed by modern ideas of how people should be categorized was bad. I said that using a grimdark ahistorical idea of what a supposed 13th century peasant thinks, as the baseline for interactions between people in a fantastical world of magic and nonhuman species that they've been interacting with for millenias is shit. You identify exactly what I'm posting against but because you need an opponent you grossly misinterpret and make up an argument I never provided. Bafflingly stupid behavior on your part.

I include many races because I like it. I like the challenge of providing a proper world for all of them. Being inspired by early DnD settings and 80s cartoons and movies to make fantastical worlds of disparate beings is fun. I don't need every race to look and act like me to enjoy them, like it seems too many smoothbrains here do. I'm not limited to simplistic options by being a low iq simpleton like Tolkein purists or humanonly fags are.

God I wish I could draw. I feel that at least from a raw aesthetics standpoint it's a million times easier to make an interesting or unique looking oc race if you can just draw it rather then desperately try to get across your idea with a paragraph of text.

Like making new inteligent species is the single biggest draw to me for sci-fi and fantasy. Even just as an excuse to give you new "buttons" to hit gameplawise if not opening interesting story directions. Whenever I consume a media that's fantasy or sci-fi i spend the whole time going "ok but tell me about all these weird assholes you got running around. Give me a fll fucking xenoanthropolgy coarse."

Ok here's a small autistic complaint.

I don't HATE them, but I find animal people that are literally just a specific type of real animal, but people now, a little bit boring. I much prefer the type of animal people that the specific inspiration, or inspirationS in the really good ones, aren't immediately obvious.

Though again, that's another one of those things that's easier to draw than describe.

Hot take: If your setting has every member of Group X regard members of Group Y the same way your world building is lazy and shallow (that's not the same as "bad", some stories do not want or need deep world building. See: D&D). Thus, implying that there exists a "should" in regards to how Group X sees Group Y is equally lazy and shallow.

If you want to build a living breathing world you must fill it with living breathing people each of whom have their own goals, beliefs, and prejudices.

Example: The mayor of town is racist

>Shallow World Building
The mayor of town is racist against all non-humans because he believes humans are superior.

>Deep World Building
The mayor of town generally assumes orcs are violent and destructive brutes because for the last ten years in which he has been mayor every year there are violent attacks in and around town perpetrated by orcs. He is distrustful of other races in general because he knows little about them and would rather be safe than sorry.

Note how the first is a copy-paste cartoon character that the players can feel good dunking on while the second is a more holistic person who might treat members of the party unfairly but does so for believable and not entirely unsympathetic reasons. He may or may not be wrong but he's not a cardboard cutout to be knocked over.

I mean...if we're being real for a second, in the real world and especially in regards to how white European settlers saw the world, most cultures of non-whites were kind of ignored outside of the resources they could take away from them. Doesn't really matter what kind of head-dress a guy is wearing as long as you can pluck jewels off of it and then use the guy who was wearing the head dress as free labor afterwords if he lives cause everyone is just "idiot savages who don't understand the value of something". Asians kinda got a pass cause of trade routes but they were still looked at as lesser entities or freaky and mysterious due to marketting.

And even if you look at racism in regards to other cultures that looked at each other like the various asias or the mesoamericas and africans, they also regarded everyone that wasn't just the people within their region as the same kind of annoying or detestable unless they could get trade deals going, and even then they were still wary and distant and warred with each other over minor bullshit.

The reason racism based world building is shallow in fiction is cause it was shallow in real life. Calling different colors different names and different streotypes doesn't change the fact you just hate people of a different color universally most of the time. Deep world building racism doesn't come into real strength until religions and cultural aspects that can't be overlooked or ignored occur. Spain looks at meso and native americans as savages not just cause they're brown and had weird resource management but also cause they didn't worship the same God so they were CLEARLY not worth the time to learn about. The blood letting and murder based rituals were just icing on the cake of excuse.

I don't think you give real world people enough credit. Just look at how pretty much every pre-modern culture strongly valued some form of hospitality. The idea that aiding strangers by providing them with food and shelter is virtuous is a very very old one and just as widespread. Strangers almost by definition are people who don't look like you or often sound like you. They are unknown quantities, but you are still morally compelled to aid them because travel in pre-modern times was a hazardous and uncertain enough thing without everyone being dicks to anyone who walked by. Given how many folk tales there are about even blatantly supernatural beings like spirits or gods accepting the gift of hospitality from humans and rewarding them for it I would assume that many people even in those times would give aid and shelter to absolutely ANYTHING, no matter how inhuman, that didn't look immediately dangerous.

Where people did harbor hatreds and fears of the other it was usually for very (to them) solid reasons, such as remembering a war, extensive contact, envy, or suspicions of causing otherwise inexplicable events. It's politics as usual. You'd recognize it instantly from today except they didn't have education or information technology.

If you actually go and look back at how early settlers in the Americas felt about native populations it was generally not just "ew brown people". It was the violence, lack of familiar and constant power structures, and a genuine desire to spread a religion they viewed as Good. The Spanish didn't build all those missions because they hated the natives. They built them with the idea to save the souls of the native people.

Good post, let me just add to it with some facts.

>The Pope outlawed slavery of native americans, since they just didn't know any better. They could be converted to christianity, more accurately.
>The pope didn't outlaw slavery of Africans because many of them had already heard of God, but had not yet converted, making them heathens who rejected the Good Word and thus despicable pagans.
