Pollution has not only not been undone, but actively encouraged, because the elites of society have bioengineered themselves and their favorite species of flora and fauna to be all but immune to any form of heavy metal or chemical waste poisoning, with the hope that all classes and species deemed inferior will die out.

Regular treatmet for heavy metal and chemial waste poisoning are expensive, and absolutely necessary, taking up the majority of a wageslave's paycheck.

Additionally, paychecks are given in a currency which is only accepted by whichever corporation you work for, which cannot be exchanged for any other form of currency legally, restricting where you can travel to only where your corporation reigns.

In order to rent an apartment, own property, hold a job, or buy goods, you habe to have a corporate contract. Some highly skilled individuals get Closed Contracts, where employee and employer sit down and discuss the terms and conditions, before coming to an agreement.

You are not a highly skilled individual, and offers of such contracts get rarer by the year. Instead, you have what's called an Open Contract - your given an otherwise blank sheet with a place to sign at the bottom. The company you sign on to - in most cases, whichever company owns the town you live in - will then decide what role you will take on, and what will be expected of you, which can be changed at any time.

Contracts can also be sold to the highest bidder, at any time. Many wageslaves who fuck up on their contract are sold to do menial slave labor, or to prostitution rings.

To not have a contract is to become an outlaw in the traditional sense - totally outside the protection of the law, with the majority of their actions being criminalized.

Real meat is hard to find these days, for much the same reason as it used to be - the production of meat has a high opportunity cost when conpared to other food products, making it extremely expensive, especially after pollution has rendered most arable land useless. For this reason, only the elites of society eat meat with any regularity.

The only meat you'll be eating is insect meat - harvested in giant warehouses, usually made into simple protein bars. Otherwise, you'll be eating genetically altered grains, grown in large hydroponic farms - arable land is at a premium, and this is cheaper.

Occasionally, when food becomes more scarce, or some people decide they want to know what meat really tastes like, they'll form gangs, armed with whatever weapons they can find, and walk around the streets, hunting anything with a pulse - usually, rats, mice, dogs, cats, or, occasionally, humans.
The police don't respond to these or other threats when it happens in the slums, calling it population control. It is not advised to walk alone at night, or without a weapon.
>>
Most previously domesticated animals - pigs, chickens, cows, turkeys - have become extremely rare after bioweapons and artifical plagues were released in order to cull their populations during the last great war, in an attempt to undermine their enemies. Both sides claim the other was responsible.

Regardless, both sides were eventually effected. Such animals line the zoos of the elite in society, alongside their other, more traditional occupants - the ones that haven't gone extinct, which are few. Tigers, Koalas, Pandas, and many of the great apes are remembered only through video footage and pictures. Attempts to recreate them through bioengineering are ongoing.

Clothing has suffered a serious loss in diversity of materials - genuine leather is extremely rare, alongside cotton, wool, and flax, as the sources of all were targeted by artifical plagues and blights in the great war. Polyester and Nylon, among other artifical sources of fabric make up the majority of clothes for the poors of society.

Far out numbering the hydroponic farms of traditional genetically altered crops are mushroom farms, fertilized by human excrement and the ground up remains of dead bodies. Cemeteries no longer exist, except for the rich.

How about this:

>lobbying groups push for legislature to enshrine access to certain pharmaceuticals under the guise of protecting certain classes of citizens
>lobbying groups also pressure doctors onto affirmative care methodology in prescription of said pharmaceuticals
>meanwhile these pharmaceuticals are produced by companies that have long histories of predatory and misleading marketing
>said companies regularly conceal negative side effects of their drugs including life-altering or deadly ones
>said pharmaceutical companies also often pay for ghost written papers supporting the use of these medications for unapproved courses of treatment (off label)
>at some point it reaches the case where 20-60% of all papers involving pharmaceuticals were ghost written by the companies that produce them
>these companies then attach the name of prominent or interested research endocrinologists/neurologists etc. which has the dual effect of increasing social status within their field/wage and legitimizing the ghost written papers
>the lobbying groups and pharmaceutical companies will also regularly place the aforementioned researchers/doctors that support their unsavory behaviour onto panels which allow them to recommend the drugs/or give talks at an expensive price whilst avoiding the appearance of conflict of interest with direct payment
>these pharmaceutical companies kick money to the lobbying groups in order to keep the pressure on doctors to prescribe and politicians to politicize or legislate in their favor
>the unsavory doctors and researches will also author longitudinal observational studies on the side-effects of the drugs they are recommending for off label use to bolster their career and use the populace as guinea pigs with next to no repercussions

Canada is just as bad if not worse than America in a lot of ways.

Since January we have:
>used an OIC to skip legislative procedure entirely
>refused to put out a budget
>removed oversight over budget
>fed has been spending 500 billion in the last 3 months (meaning we added a 500 billion deficit to a country that only has a 1.5 trillion budget in 3 months)
>had the PM become involved in another scandal (he has had 3-4 ethics violations so far and basically just says sorry then does the same thing again)
>the current scandal forced our finance minister to step down (who we then replaced with a journalist)
>the current scandal had 3 separate committees investigating it - it was already cited as an ethics violation
>the PM just asked the Governor General to prorogue parliament
>the GG was involved in her own scandal that is also currently being investigated
>so she prorogued parliament for 2 months
>this resets all the work done in the investigations, bans the committees from doing any investigation/work until its over and forces them to restart effectively
>to restart an investigation where you left there has to be unanimous consent in the House of Commons once the prorogue is over - so a single nay fucks everything
>we agreed to test China's vaccine for covid on our citizens rather than our own or any of our allies

On top of the national shit
>each province is handling the crisis differently
>my province has granted its governor the ability to completely control the economy and pass legislation without any vote/opposition
>he has been using it to fuck over multiple projects which have years of work
>he also used it to block a leadership election of the party he coaligned with to gain power
>and has been extending the act that gives him this power every month

The RCMP who should be looking into all this shit, are under control of someone married to the cousin of the former finance minister that the PM just protected by cancelling the investigation

No one fucking knows where the money is going.
Some of it is going to CERB which is basically an income supplement and stacks on top of welfare/employment insurance/child bonus.
But otherwise we really don't have a clue.
The government refuses to let us see anything at all.

As for the scandal:
>Company wants to get federal money
>Suggests the government create a charity program to help the elderly
>Government says cool, and gives them the job to do it citing no one else would be capable
>Proceeds to give them something like 950 million CAD

The scandal part is:
>PM has been paid for speaking engagements by the company
>His wife regularly podcasts with them
>Other immediate family members have been involved with them including his mother
>The company has paid them roughly millions in speaking fees before you even consider travel/accomodation/etc.

His finance minister also has financial relations with the company.

Essentially its the Canadian equivalent of Dick Cheney and Halliburton's non-bid deals with the Department of Defense during the Iraq war.

Trudeau has a history of this stuff.
>2017 he broke multiple federal corruption laws by accepting gifts from someone who lobbies him/his party
>2018 he interfered with the justice department and federal prosecutors on behalf of a quebec company involved in its own pay-for-play scandal

Never mind the stuff that can be politically charged like paying a terrorist 10.5 million then using a loophole so that the victim of the terrorist can't go after the money.

>the man himself never even did his job right, only sowed more confusion, country nosedives around that time in a massive econ crisis, effectively making us starve for like 4 years to make up for their shit decisions

Britain has actually implemented a fairly good wage replacement scheme compared to the Americans, but since as usual the entire government is made up of completely bloodless finance ghouls that's going as soon as they can put out enough propaganda to that effect into the media, as is the eviction suspension. Great Depression N.3 here we come, they aren't about to start sending out stimulus checks.

My only worry about the deficit is that it currently isn't anywhere near large enough to stop the inevitable implosion.
>>
>>74435623
The problem is the UK can't afford it.
Nobody really can. As it stands the UK is relying heavily on its remarkable credit history to get away with it. Find a newborn child, look it in the eyes and tell it will be paying off the debt from the kungflu furlough scheme the rest of its life. Because it will.

Eviction suspension needs to go. At least in Canada it does. It is already Damn near impossible to get rid of unwanted tenants. But up here they did the following due to Covid:

>no evictions until state of emergency is over
>no mortgage freeze
>no mortgage subsidy
>you can get a rent subsidy but only if the tenant applies - the landlord cannot apply on behalf or compel a tenant to apply
>even then the rent subsidy caps at 500/month which is lower than most single bedrooms alone let alone a suite
>if the tenant does not take the subsidy there isn't anything you can do - cutting off heat/electrcity/water and internet (if you provided it) is a violation of tenants rights so legally they can pretty much just squat and receive everything at your expense

The my provinces government is also shoehorning through a law that will extend all laws/acts/decisions of this current government through the entirety of the emergency, through any governmental changes (such as a federal or provincial election removing them) and for the next at min 3 months to over a year after the emergency has ceased (ie. If the state of emergency was lifted in September, any changes this party makes have to stay until January at min to over September 2021).

Are you paying your tenants utilities? I know some landlords offer that but it seems like a bad idea.
Mortgage freeze is a must, we are very glad to have it in the US. Good luck
>>
>>74435767

Nah, bollocks. UK has total control over the pound, it's impossible for us to run out of them in the same way it's not possible for the USA to run out of dollars.

The issue with the UK is total economic capacity shrinking massively thanks to COVID, not having enough money to buy everything we can possibly make. At least if the gov. is willing to create enough money that it doesn't artificially limit the economy with deflation, anyway.
>>
>>74431383
But this just sounds like real life
>>
>>74436446
Well no.
The primary way to raise money is not to just turn on the printer but to issue bonds.
That's what the USA did money printer go brrr memes aside and their currency is crazy mess thats not worth going into.

So that money is going to need to be paid back. Over time.
>>
>>74436596

Bond issuance is not to raise money but to maintain the desired central bank interest rate, this is fairly conventional econ. If you look at the balance sheets of the central bank and the Treasury then money is still created when bond issuance occurs, it's just in the form of interest-bearing bonds rather than non interest-bearing notes.

Barely matters anyway, since they're 100% safe nobody is going to stop buying US treasuries or UK gilts, which is why their rates go down in times of crisis rather than up like normal risky assets.
>>
>>74436380
I don't but I do know landlords who do. It's pretty common in Canada to include it.
>>
>>74436326
You would be correct.
Eviction works like this in Canada:

Start eviction process
Tenant has 15 days to file a dispute
After the filing of a dispute it takes up to 30 days for a decision (in my experience mid 20s usually)
After the filing of an order of posssssion the tenant can take it in for review
Review has a 60 day time limit, and can be extended by the courts
The courts can also set it aside and order a new review if it is: in error of law, unfair, or unreasonable
Then the tenant can get his writ which takes another day
Then hire a bailif to remove them (which means you have to go figure out which one you want, pay them, send them the paperwork, inform the court, then wait for them to do it)
The bailif shit can take 2 days to a week.

So essentially 3 months he can easily forstall just on the legal shit. Toss on at min another 17 days or so for everything else. And then the rest is just squatting.

So once the bailif removes them, if they re-enter and start squatting you are shit out of luck
>Police will not help
>Have to go to the courts
>Have to obtain a new eviction notice for the squatter
>Have to contact the sheriff's department to have them deliver the notice
>Then you can have the cops take them out
>Then you have to legally dispose of any possessions they brought in - otherwise they can sue

Enjoy. Easily another 2+ months of stalling available.

I should note, all of this means you have to go to the courts in person for this shit, which are only open from 9am to 4pm on Monday to Friday, so you are probably losing pay/have to take a day off work.
>>
>>74436688
UK gilts yeah no worries there.
US treasuries maybe not.

Still we don't want to get hyperinflation or anything like that which would be very easy to blunder into if you let people get used to the government throwing money out of thin air.
>>
>>74436778
Hyperinflation basically only occurs when there's a complete and total collapse of productive capacity, as when the French occupied the Ruhr and all the workers there went on general strike, or amid massive war devastation as in post-WW1 mitteleuropa. That to me seems way more likely if we allow 20% of the country to be fired and if anything even more to be evicted due to being overly worried about the deficit or the debt, which if you look at the accounting is equivalent to the monetary gain of the private and household sectors, since when the government spends money it goes into the pockets of either companies or the population.

Otherwise the main downside to an overly large deficit would be a few more percentage points on inflation, not this massive exponential currency collapse. A few extra points would if anything be beneficial, since it would decrease people's debt loads relative to income and also decrease the size of the hilariously bloated financial sector in the UK, so I'd much rather err on that side than the side of unnecessary unemployment and underconsumption.

Of course the City would not be happy with the "spend to full employment, build a ton of new infrastructure in the process, burn the creditors with 5-7% inflation" plan, which is why it will never ever happen and was repeatedly stamped on in the 1970s, but such is capitalism.

>>
>>74437832

Define poor
>>
>>74442042
Working Class/Working Poor in basic socio-economic terms.

In Canada that is roughly around the wage of 20-30/hour. Or 45k to 65k annually.

You can get a mortgage here despite making that little, if your credit score is not shit, and you agree to a 30+ year mortgage.

So some of the poorer families, say a two working parent household that makes 75k per year combined, might get a mortgage, then rent out their basement to a tenant for say 800-1500/month which covers or helps cover the mortgage, and additional money earned through regular income will be used to pay the rest of the mortgage or pay down the principle. Those types tend to be the ones hit hardest by our system up here.

And by all means they are not middle class. Middle class in the area used in the above example would be more than 16k above that combined income. A regular single person income in the middle class is closer to 75k per year with lower middle being around 70k.

Keep in mind, these are CAD. So 1 CAD = 0.76 USD = 0.64 Euro = 0.58 Pound

>Bond issuance is not to raise money but to maintain the desired central bank interest rate

You're kind of seeing the trees for the wood there. Bonds and interest rates are both tools to achieve the same ends, ie funding national activity and smoothening market oscillation. The litmus test at the end of the day is what precisely is being funded by the central banks; productivity or lifestyle, and how *sustainable* is the effort? That is the biggest question.

The trouble with coronachan rescue packages worldwide is that they're money sunk firmly into the "preserve lifestyle" category. Which simply means the "production and development" is taking a hard hit and we aren't going to see future growth like what we saw in the past. We're gonna go sideways a bit for a while, at best. (Barring a very near future quantum leap in human tech development like I dunno, cost-efficient carbon nanotubes or something.)

Or in other words, money was borrowed against future production to pay for medical expenses now, which will have to be repaid in future, which means the future will have that much less produce to enjoy. It's like a 4x game, or Catan writ large. /tg/ of all places ought to appreciate that better than most.

>>

>>
>>74446901

I largely agree, but the limiting factor is not "how much money has the government spent" because it can always spend as much as it needs to do whatever, the limiting factor is the real resources and what is done with them. Government "borrowing" as an interest-rate maintenance tool is entirely distinct from individual or corporate borrowing, it never has to be "paid back" in the form of an actual commitment of real resources.

I have no problem with maintaining consumption over the course of the Corona crisis if it's done competently, since it both keeps people Not Dying and prevents the hysteresis effect whereby the reduced consumption for X period of time reduces productive capacity permanently, since some of those factories won't open back up again and are now deadweight.
The big problem here is that the COVID response was done incompetently to such a degree that the lockdown will have to be sustained far longer than it would have been if it was far harsher, far sooner.

Huge government investment in R&D after COVID would seem wise, since quite a lot of the major US tech advances that lead to the FAANGs were essentially putting together the results of fed. research like DARPA in interesting ways. I have quite a few problems with the standard "tech company business model" of massive rent-seeking, but that's independent and directly hostile to continued technological development.

>>74448739
>it never has to be "paid back" in the form of an actual commitment of real resources

It does, and there are real resources. Govt debts are always being paid back, the public just doesn't normally see it because new debt is constantly issued. Hell I own some sovereign bonds myself, I can choose to resell it now, or the Govt pays me back in 10 years. Meanwhile I'm collecting interest.

Real resources are committed, in the form of national economic activities from which the Govt collects taxes to repay the debt to me. If the Govt fails to collect taxes or the country's economic activity goes to zero, that money is lost.

*In addition* to funding Govt activities,
>Government "borrowing" is an interest-rate maintenance tool

And the purpose of maintaining interest rates is to smoothen market fluctuations i.e. encourage economic activity at a proper, non-bubble-forming pace, or ride over financial crisis such as corona

>the COVID response was done incompetently to such a degree that the lockdown will have to be sustained far longer than it would have been if it was far harsher, far sooner

That's a bit out of topic for pure economics discussion. Well, at the end of the day the Govt of a democratic country springs from the collective zeitgeist of its people; you got what you voted for, and most countries voted for a leader who could do X thing very well, which they treasured, but may not have been the best for doing Y thing very well such as respond to a novel pandemic. The nation COULD always vote to surrender your rights in a time of crisis, as the Romans did, or outright accept the rule of a tyrant like a Communist country who can order you shot if you don't wear your mask.... but that means picking leaders who are good at Y and not at X.
>>
>>74448739
>the FAANGs were essentially putting together the results of fed. research like DARPA in interesting ways
To be fair to them, the Govt would not have had the capability or capital to do what they did. Fuck knows I hate Elon Musk with a passion, but you need brilliant people to come up and put together something that can create TESLA, and the nature of Govt bureaucracy means that it stifles such individuals. That's how the USSR really lost the race, actually; a State-controlled organisation just couldn't out-innovate and OUT-PRODUCE (very important!) a capitalist organisation. It's capitalism that creates opportunity and MOTIVATION (again, important!) for brilliant people to do brilliant things that ultimately contribute to the country's bottom line.

Hence, in all honesty?

>I have quite a few problems with the standard "tech company business model" of massive rent-seeking

Fuck the people who talk about "rent seeking". They're the leechers of society who are envious of the doers. One does not look at outlier individuals, it is the system one judges by; and on the overall the market returns in a developed Western country are far from "rent seeking". Quite the contrary, too much is being siphoned off to satisfy these bleeding-heart fucking hypocrites and on a global scale it's getting harder and harder to compete with more capitalistic Eastern nations. This is precisely why all of Europe is going to pot.

I really want to write a cyberpunk setting where the megacorp govts are socialist corporatism organisations...

Programs are where it's at, not hardware. And you don't need heavy duty hardware for that. Whole countries are directing their IT industries towards this direction precisely for this reason.

>and there's always the Flappybird Gambit

>>74454224
>AND they make poor decisions.
>They accumulate debt, they have kids out of wedlock, they don't work a full time job, they don't finish high school at times, they justify spending on unneeded luxuries

Even the SJWs acknowledge this bit. They just fail at the part where "it's not really their fault cause they don't know any better"* and give them a free pass, as if not having consequences to your life choices is actually going to make you grow as a person...

*(Which says something about what that crowd really think about equality)

Its not about respect, its about being able to financially leave the lower class, or underclass. Military allows that. Respect is irrelevant.

>>74454523
>Military - don't just be a grunt, specialize.
A combat medic can become an EMT, a weapons tech often is acceptable as a maintenance technician in civilian life. These are jobs that are not in poverty.

>Scholarships/Bursaries - fair enough point, but they exist to help and can be utilized if they do.

>Trades
Usually a good option. Take Canada for example, its pretty cheap education, always offers loans that can be paid back in a few paychecks (or even paid while at school) and you'll get at min the 70k per hour to in the six digits as a tradie. People don't do it because they think its this low social status thing. But financially it is quite viable.

>construction
You literally wreck your shit if you're retarded. Learning how to lift things properly saves you miles of bills later. Just use it and move up the ladder within the field, or save money and go into something else.

What you're missing here, is all options require delayed gratification, which a lot of poor fucks don't have. You don't just climb out of poverty in a week or month. It usually takes say 5 to 6 years.

Yeah software is not really a reliable way to make a living. Especially for white people these days.
In the USA the tech firms are jumping on the use of compliant and boot licking Indian workers.
The rest of the world has a saturation of programmers due to a solid decade of encouraging them.

Yes the US army will pay for your college. Meaning once you get out the army you will likely have a fair bit of physical damage, probably some socialisation issues AND to top it all off you'll be behind everyone in your age group anyways because lol military experience counts for nothing.
The only edge you'll have over someone who just left school is not having student debt.

Scholarships like I said are great if you're checking some special interest box. If you're white and male you get nothing.

And the cripple thing. Go find some construction workers and ask them how they feel. Chances are they're all gonna complain about their knees, backs or whatever injury they didn't get compensated for.
Hell find some poor fuck who's worked fast food for a year and you'll likely find they're a mess too.
>>
The labor distribution system's shit.
Thousands upon thousands want for jobs but get none because we can't just do the "food and a house for labor" exchange any more and have to run it through hundreds of middlemen.
>>
>>74454815
Indians are pretty useless at programming from what I've read. I don't think companies can just replace competent workers with them.
>>
>>74455049
They are pretty useless. But they're just capable enough to do the job, even if its not done well it's done.
The main thing that the US tech firms love about them is their compliance. They are absolute bootlickers and have no opinion other than that your opinion is great mister boss man yes.

So US tech firm management love them.
No opinions, no trying to get better jobs, no haggling for career advancement, no questioning or ideas of their own.
A totally obedient and compliant workforce. Not the best but you just ain't gotta worry about them

And they are cheap as fuck.
Like ridiculously cheap.

When I worked one of my jobs, we'd off shore to them maybe enough work to add iono 100 people to our payroll. But for the price, we could have thousands of Indians, and pay them above average per capita yearly salary.

It was a nightmare, cause you'd have to redo shit all the fucking time cause they were such trash, but it was cheaper than hiring the native population so, thats what management wanted.
>>
>>74455605
Nah if you wanted to make the big money in tech then the time to be alive and just entering the field was anywhere from the 70s to the early 00s.
After that you're basically hoping to come up with anything that a bigger company could do better and will buy off you.

Is all the time, every year. The only problem is that you don't know what field it is

But that's alright. Unlike in the 70s, you have a small device in your pocket which you can use to keep up-to-date on the latest trends around the world, and you stand that much better a chance of getting wind of the next big thing and preparing yourself

The question is, are you doing that, or are you using that device to sit on a Mongolian basket-weaving forum whining about how you just can't get a break?

I could imagine a dogmatized version of Science, where the innovative class has hijacked the knowledge and masses don't have the means (or perhaps even inclination) to truly understand it.

They might not view science as a god, or even scoff at the idea of a god, yet they still believe things veiled in scientific language without at all understanding the concepts / methodologies, and are easily lead by the upper echelons that veil their desires in dogmatized jargon that 'sounds right'.

Education would be closely guarded and the educated class idolized as exceptional and beyond the intelligence of the common person. Knowledge would be more closely controlled and it'd be harder to figure it out on your own without being part of the class that is allowed to have that knowledge, and propaganda usually effectively shuts down any naysayers as imbeciles and viewed with the same derision as we might see flat-earthers.

Basically 'scientists' of that society are like catholic priests who read the bible to the plebs who can't read latin, and have the ability to twist the meaning whenever they like in language nobody can second-guess them in.

Modern military casualties in war, at least for the west, are quite low. The USA has suffered roughly a total 17,000 in the past 14 years. This is roughly 1200 per year. Of which Only 26% were in OCO. The vast majority of non-OCO dying of illness, accidents (in particular vehicular), or self inflicted injury. Of a total population of 1.3 million.

Death is fairly uncommon. Crippling PTSD is quite rare as well - roughly 5%. Physical crippling depends more on deployment and specialization.
