I want spooky sci-fi stories, ideas, and images. The hard sci-fi thread is for autists and I'm just here for the aforementioned goods.
I'll dump a few things to get us started. Extra credit for anybody who brings Dead Space related material to class today

This one might technically be Star Wars but if you have a lukewarm IQ you can retool it for really any Sci-Fi thing, may the Holy Theotokos bless its author

I believe there isn't enough of ghosts and such possessing and making use of technology
>>
>Philip K. Dick's Second Variety
>cleaning droid on an abandoned ship ramming itself repeatedly against the same visibly-mundane bit of wall
>attempts to contact an allied ship/station/settlement are met with cryptic pleas to shut up
>initial distress call followed by a retraction claiming everything is fine, but you should still come visit
>omniscient AI that has been programmed to only tell the truth
>arrival on a space station riddled with corpses. By the time you discover they were killed by disease, you are already infected
>watching the destruction of a planet, receiving transmissions in real-time, but the ship you're using to get there is too slow to arrive in time
>the bastards from Blindsight
>>
In order to preserve your bodies and the bodies of your passengers your minds are transferred into a hyper advanced AI simulation where you can control the ship function through droid bodies.

However, you come to realize that the systems that kept your bodies alive have failed hundreds of years ago and that all the capsules contain rotted corpses....
>>
>>74766690
To add to this: Only a handful of bodies remain but you cannot know which are still alive, either you take the blind leap and live again as a mortal or you suffer immortality in an ever degrading digital realm

You could make that more interesting/scary. Ditch the life support failure thing, instead just one day have dozens of passengers scream and vanish from the virtual world. The next day the same, and the next. More and more inhabitants just scream and vanish day by day. If they investigate their personal pods, they realize they're missing. As in the entire pod has been ripped from the walls.

They search the entire ship but can't find them. The ships is huge, but so are dozens - hundreds - of life support pods. There's nowhere they could be hidden. Throughout this it seems like the players droid bodies seem like they are becoming clumsier and clumsier, tripping over nothing or randomly seizing up.

Eventually a pod is taken before their eyes. It's ripped from the wall by invisible forces, then is dragged away to eventually vanish into an airlock. Ship sensors don't show anything out there. They're knocked over if they stand in front of the forces. It's ghosts, or demons, or aliens or something.

It's not. The ship is being scavenged: the pods, their implants, maybe even the bodies themselves are valuable salvage. The salvagers ship has been docked the entire time and the salvagers and their machines are in every part of the ship (and the players have been occasionally walking into them and being bumped around or tripped). The first thing they did when they arrived is just install an AI-core that actively erases their image from any droid on the ship.

I read this as all these being the same story and now I want to run an apocalyptic sci-fi game.

Bonus, your original plan required stopping at said planet to resupply your ship and you don't have the fuel or life support consumables to reach another one.

Evolving celestial parasites

An alien bio weapon that was let go into the cosmos and humanity is unfortunate set to receive it on a colony they have just recently established.

The existential cost is great alone considering that all the work to make this colony as it was is now ruined but more so you can't allow the greater bulk of humanity to become infected.

Do you risk it all to save the few middling survivors or just turn it all into a massive fireball and hope for the best

What if you are one of the survivors? Do you do everything in your power to escape or do you ensure that the menance can harm no one else then it already has?

You guys remember that episode of Star Trek OS where a mad scientist was planning on replacing all of humanity with immortal robot clones in order to "perfect" humanity?
>>
>>74780849
Yeah. His methodology was sound, but his mecha-cloning process failed to accurately replicate personalities.
>>
>>74780929
Well, Kirk intentionally planted that sentence in his android clone so that Spock would catch on. Because even though that sentence gave him away completely, the clone was just Kirk but with an agency to turn everybody into android clones. It'd be like Invasion of the Body-Snatchers in outer space.

Kirkbot didn't have real Kirk's personality, it didn't notice.

Well, he acted that way because Dr. Korby didn't notice how Kirk had intentionally fucked up the android.

Had a nightmare about suicidal time travellers. The gist was that they'd gone back to prevent their births as a more complete kind of self-annihilation (your loved ones can't mourn you if you never existed) but accidentally became entangled within the paradox. The world is free of them just like they wanted yet they still persist smeared across the whole of reality as beings without beginning or end. The only thing that could end their self-inflicted suffering is dissolving reality altogether or maybe that would just plunge them into a deeper hell, I woke up too soon to find out.

Cyber city oedo was GOAT.

On topic: Time distortion shenanigans. Party keeps seeing glimpses of themselves at certain places. It is always where the party member being seen couldn't possibly be,

>Alf sees Jimmy from behind, far away in a long corridor, light keeps flipping on and off
>Hey Jimmy what are you doing here?
>Jimmy over radio: I'm fixing the reactor, remember?
>Wait, this isnt't the reactor-
>"Jimmy" turns its head, and just before its face can finally be seen, the light goes out. Permanently
>Two red dots resembling eyes approach slowly, among a fuzzying static noise and heavy, labored breathin
>Flee, raise flashlight, use weapon, talk, approach?

And of course the classics
>Geometry and laws of physics stop working or or work in strange ways, always in locally limited areas
>Steel corridor twists and turns sideways like the inside of a rifled barrel
>Find an old radio, hear faint voices coming from
>When picked up, a panicked, sobbing voice begs for help
>Player can speak with it, but the voice just makes its plea for help and falls silent
>If player keeps listening to radio: Feeling of something bad approaching, raised hairs, sudden feeling if increasing cold
>If he drops the radio in time, it stops and nothing further happens.
>If not... something twists out of the darkness of the shadows and approaches, hungry

Make a non-tangible threat, give very obvious hints that something really bad happened. Insane drawings and diagrams on a wall, a single bloody handprint. A door handle covered in blood. But the door handle is outside, open to vacuum.

>Player keeps hearing tapping noises when close to windows facing outside, when he isn't looking
>If he keeps investigating, small signs start to appear
>Handprints
>A teddy floating outside, eyes pitch black
>A single bloody hand print
>Starts hearing his loved one, wife, whatever.
>"Let me in, it is so cold out here"

>We won't need eyes where we're going!

Of course they didn't, they just think they do and it all turns to shit afterwards. As always. Not because it is an impossible task in itself, but because some people
>cut corners to siphon money to something else
>personal ambition combined with massive egos and hurt pride
>office politics
>remote planet, due to having to keep things quiet and out of the eyes of the united earth government
>little mini colony of "volunteers"

>Whole situation is monitored from orbit, with no shuttle exchange planned for the next few weeks
>All shuttles stay on board the orbiting ship except for when they drop stuff or people, groundside has no ships of their own
>Strict "you are on your own in case of trouble" policy
>It was all set up to fail from the very start as a way to gather data, seed a planet with "easily harvestable" alien eggs and get rid of some expendable out-of-favor personell
>Of course everything goes wrong and ends up worse than every imagined, or planned

>several different androids acting as observers, overseers or secret spies
>All of them answer to different people back at home base
>people want to rise to the top, are willing to sabotage projects knowing it will cost lives
>xenos play dumb until they can break the control
>things get out of hand because people underestimate the xenomorphs and their intelligence
>This time there is no queen at the start, but one of the escaped drones is becoming a queen
>Time race to stop ALL the drones before even one of them can become a queen
>on a shit hole volcanic planet, with just a few WeyYu guards, bad equipment, and the xenomorphs wrecked most of your people and equipment during their escape

You are, for some reason, part of that expedition. You were told the truth, or not. You were part of the betrayal, or not. You can fight, or not. Post your war face!

Read Hyperion by Dan Simmons, if you still haven't, the beginning (the priest arc) is top tier sci-fi horror, though your mileage with the rest of the book and the sequels may vary. But a story about fighting a spess-cyber-mecha-Satan is literally as spooky as sci-fi gets, wish someone had done a less corny and mary-sueish take on this.

Bester's a treasure. That scene at the end of The Demolished Man where reality gradually dissolves ("Tell me about the Sun." "There is no Sun.") is peak existential horror.

My dream's a little different from the story as endless existence is especially tormenting to the suicidal.

Do you have to return to your original body, or can you kill someone else in the simulation to steal their still-living body?
