>Hi, this is doekuramori. I'm the creator of The Citadel. Thank you for playing and your feedback on the game. I will try in the future to make games with more variety and the feedback in mind. However there is one thing that is absolutely wrong. I am not guro artist. This is not a guro fetish game. Lately there have been many comments accusing me of being a nasty person and attacking me. This isn't true. I am not guro artist, I don't make guro works or doujin. My interests are Touhou, Lost in Abyss and biomechanism. I also very like dark themes and games that have dark themes and oppressive feeling. I hope you can see it now. Not guro. I am interested in biomechanism, like how people will merge with machines in the future. And what kind of conception that will make, like Ghost In The Shell meets H.R. Giger. It's strange aesthetic and I think creates interesting image. But it's not guro. The Citadel features gibbing and violence because I identified that as a big part of the aesthetic of classic retro shooter. Ultra violence. Because I draw anime style, I interpret that through the way I draw. It is not "fetish". It is inspired by those old games, and also newer games which are influence by that old style, like Shadow Warrior 2. I was quite interested by the gibbing and gore system in Shadow Warrior because it's like how old brutality meets new technology that allows use of physics with gib system. Again, not because it is sexual. I am proud of what I achieve with The Citadel game, even if it is not perfect, but now I receive many comments and mean messages after watching video from people accusing me of being a dangerous freak who only wants to hurt girls. It's not my intention. Please understand.
>>
>>76164235
Well no. I'm not into guro.

But in Nechronica things, especially dolls and Savants, don't die when they are torn open or partially dismembered.

So in combat you often have situation s where some poor sod or other is making due with half a body, no head, no arms, or some of massive physical trauma.

You don't see that often depicted in video games.

You did a good job.
>>
>>76164235

Gore doesn't do anything for me sexually. In fact it's a huge turn off.

I'm just impressed with the way you managed to depict beings put together with parts from different sources and materials, and also depict them when they are partially or mostly taken apart.

Kinda quick and dirty because I'm typing this while I get ready for work:
>Port Campaign
>Action moments
My first Nechronica campaign ended with us decoupling a lifeboat from the side of a space station.
While the station was in free fall
And we were between the station and Earth.
And also the station was a hundred mile wide disk.

By the time we got out from under it you could make out individual trees. And I only made the last piloting check because my character had the Albino part and the DM let me leverage it for the roll [other parts I'd been using broke under prior hazards in the flight, like the 500 year old circuitry frying itself and sending an arch through my Doll's combat stim pump].

>wholesome
We befriended another Doll's happy memories, if that makes sense.

We saved another doll who had been locked in a stasis tube and added her to the party.

We found my character's robot dad and repaired him back to proper function.

We rescued a Savant who had been part of an old group of one of our player characters (not an actual group, but the story was they had been adventuring some time before the campaign) which resulted in chaste /u/ shenanigans.
You could also put this encounter under Action, because we had to blow off a portion of her face to destroy her muzzle, which activated her Final Form and actually let us speak with her (once we killed all the gargoyle constructs which were essentially cattleprodding her into a mad frenzy).

>other Campaign
My character has several close friends and a very doting father, so lots of wholesome. And lots of hugs because she has six arms so why not, y'know.

We did get into a rooftop combat involving Wyatt Earp, a samurai, and five or six other gunslingers while seven stories off the ground or so. That was fun.

Bumping with a more traditional necromancer.
And now that I think about it, a Nechronica game set in a more traditional sword and sorcery setting might be good fun. Would require a more deft hand than mine to keep the mood proper though.

>>76163014
Port's relationship with hers was mostly ambivlanent. She thought of it as a machine that needed fixing rather than a being with any true agency (which was mostly correct, it turned out).
When the party finally got a chance to confront it face-to-face they made clear that what it was doing wasn't going to lead anywhere good and its methodologies would need to be changed. It responded with:
>You are correct
>Here is the entirety of the data my efforts have borne so far.
>take it and do with it as you will
>Now please evacuate, as I am about to crash this space station with no survivors
And then it crashed the space station with no survivors.
Port continued the project post-campaign, and the party managed to carve out a small fief where other Dolls could live in relative safety.

Coleo's never met her Necromancer.

I ran a short, three game campaign where the Necromancer was actually a good dude, which I've covered here before. He took in and fixed broken undead and gave them a place to stay. He wanted to eventually quell the other cruel necromancers who used their subjects as slaves, but the events of the campaign ultimately crushed his ambitions.

Does a minigun/chaingun part exist in Nechronica? I see a part for a machine gun but no explicit heavy chaingun
Would Shooting Attack 1 + Area Attack + chain attack X be reasonable for it as a part used by horrors/savants
>>
>>76173737

It could work as an enemy only part. Most shit can work as enemy only parts as long as its something the PCs can avoid, mitigate, or kill before it does too much damage. That gun having Chain 1 would make it do as much damage as Undead Gun but with an extra roll, Chain 2 does more if you land all 3, Chain 3 is just unlikely unless you have a high enough check bonus, and a bonus that high is likely to get multiple crits so it might not be a terribly good idea. Also AP cost and range could be mitigating factors to how dangerous it is. So the answer is, it probably won't destroy your players unless you get lucky and give it a high chain.

>Does a minigun/chaingun part exist in Nechronica?
Not RAW.
Undead Gun is a bunch of shotguns strapped together, so I don't think it would be out of the question to fluff it as a minigun if you wanted, or if it was an enemy part and you wanted to emphasize ROF and walking fire then you could just chop one AP off the cost and let it rip.

You could just tack a chain attack on if you wanted, but imo chain attacks work better to represent things happening in a flurry, all at once. Sustained dakka works better with lower AP costs instead, imo.

Forz's catchphrase is her entire philosophy resumed in two words.
Just meat.
Corpses aren't scary because they're just meat, and meat can't hurt you. Savants aren't that big of a deal because they're just meat, and meat can be torn apart. Emotions don't matter because she is just meat and meat doesn't feel pain.
She chafes a lot with the other girls who are hellbent in proving they're not dead and they're *real* against all evidence where .

>>76163014
The Necromancer is likely just another doll seeding corpses all around for the hell of it. Forz originally just found her annoying (and idly wanted to tear out her third eye to keep it as a chew toy) but after she learned the necromancer was bragging about being the only real human (Forz finds "grownups" disgusting for some reason) and was grooming her favorite sister she's grown to coldly hate her. Doesn't help that somebody sort-of joked that they could trade Forz the secrets of necromancy in exchange for s living human, and she takes everything seriously.

Its nice to see interesting examples of characters in the various positions.

What is the story behind Forz's philosophy?
>>
>>76192190
As a Gothic, all she knew before stumbling into the small doll town the game takes place at, all she knew was hunting and eating other mindless undead.
Also, unlike the other dolls, she doesn't have any memories of her life other than a vague sense of disgust towards grown-ups and resentment towards the Necromancer.
She'd very much rather go back to being a mindless zombie gorging herself in flesh but she's grown attached to the other girls in various ways, even if the others aren't. It's too late for her now.

>>76192372
>She'd very much rather go back to being a mindless zombie gorging herself in flesh but she's grown attached to the other girls in various ways, even if the others aren't. It's too late for her now.

What make her pine for her past as a lone hunter ans eatter of flesh?
Is part of it that she wants to go back to an existence that is familiar and makes sense to her?
>>
>>76192372
>She'd very much rather go back to being a mindless zombie gorging herself in flesh but she's grown attached to the other girls

>It's too late for her now.

"You can't go home again" can go in some strange directions in Nechronica.
>>
>>76192873
Forz believes the necromancer is human, so she thinks she can beat her to a pulp and trade her to the doll in exchange for the secrets of necromancy. The doll that made the offer collects body parts (and weapons) and jokingly claimed she's another necromancy when Forz asked what does she do with all of them, and she took it seriously half because of idle curiosity and half because of an existential doubt. What will she do once she's taken all te meat? What is it for? What's the point of hoarding all of it?
Those doubts are why she wishes she could go back to being just another hungry undead. No need to think, no need to doubt herself, no need to feel jealous about other dolls getting close to her sister, envious about her two sisters already in a relationships or insecure about being judged for being a gore-coated cannibal fiend.

Here is a fun hypothetical
Your current Nechronica party unknowingly enters a portal to the matoran universe
How would the dolls react to such a different and strange world

If you mean stopping Savants from escaping the battlefield, they can be, but if the GM wants the savant to escape, she'll probably have something like Adhesive Pads or Hopper so her attempt to flee can't be prevented with a Hinder Move.
Typically, what I've seen done is applying the same rules to Savants as to PCs (but on the opposite end of the battlefield), meaning the Savant has to use a Move maneuver while she's in Tartarus to try to flee, then succeed at an Action Check to actually get away. So even if a Hinder Move isn't helpful against that, a standard Hinder can prevent her escape roll from succeeding. You just, you know, have to be in range to Hinder her, which for most of the good Hinders means you have to be in Tartarus too.

Having parts that reduce AP is kinda really iffy because putting yourself down in the initiative for situational boosts has a very real possibility of just gimping your influence on a combat. You're effectively trading Kung Fu, Animal Ears, and Adrenaline in exchange for a blanket Defend 1. That's nice if you're dealing with a bunch of chip damage all the time but what if you just don't get attacked one turn? That's a use of Meat Snake or Remote Attack or whatever that doesn't happen in exchange for your defend that didn't get used, and in Nechronica a 6 damage that didn't happen or a Stagger that wasn't triggered can have pretty gnarly knock on effects down the line.

I could see this as a custom part specifically made for a certain campaign, but in my honest opinion I would make this ability function like Waltz. Rapid, lasts the duration of the turn, and costs 3 to activate. Otherwise you're taking a severe chunk out of your Max AP.

I have been involved in one (1) game where the party encountered living humans outside of a memory, and it was pic related.
The party woke up in a bunker complex as a human army was bearing down on their necromancer. The party's main goal was simply to escape the combat area, but they encountered enemy combatants over the course of the adventure.

Pic related was a hapless contractor they captured early on and pumped for exposition. Just about everyone else they met were hostile soldiers.
>>
>>76216093
It would also give all your other defend parts +1 and turn Crab legs or Gauntlet into passive defend 2 on the legs or arms.

You really don't. Closest I think is a Court/Gothic that abuses cheap/0 cost Supports/Hinders with Delight in Corruption but otherwise I have no idea.

Hell yeah, we had our first session last night and I had a blast. Wish we had a fourth to play with, though, since a lot of the weight to make the game fun seems to be on the players

I'm playing a Holic with a Limiter and Antenna so it'll probably be a while before she goes completely unhinged. Chainsaws are very fun, very gorey.

My friend seems kinda miffed that we're all Range 0, but I think it could be interesting. I'm not too concerned about numbers, I just wanna be able to do and witness cool, freaky shit. Can't wait to Calamity my sisters' heads off!!
>>

The only part that worries me there is irresponsible use of calamity.

Glad you are having fun.

Congratulations on getting a game!

Can you tell us about your first session?

How do you fluff spirit attacks?
Given that they inflict madness I imagine it can take a wide variety of forms.

But I'm drawing a blank on what to do with them story wise.
>>
>>76218737
Forcing up horrific memories, Attacking your will to live, killing hope, etc

I tend to just fluff it as "Emotional damage" rather than Sanity Damage

Our group's a girl made in the likelihood of the parlangua, a rotting plant-thing infested full of zombie butterflies and a girl with a collar that says Cerberus and a tail but no ears. She immediately starts feeling inadequate that the lizard has _actual_ teeth and claws fitting for a beast, on top of being naturally bigger than her.
Our Necromancer's some green sickly thing trapped inside some nuclear research facility - we saw her (it?) touch a nuclear reactor's core and fade away into nothing before hearing a voice in our heads telling us to take her to the stars. What the fuck?

Highlights include getting to roll a conversation check without uttering a word when the lizard and dog both find themselves dropping on all fours to sweep the place, my character got irritated for a second before realizing they both had had the same instinctual reaction. We also saw the ghost of one of those elevator-operating ladies in an elevator full of zombie corpses preserved with formaldehyde. She was creepy but nice! She asked us something but we didn't understand since her mouth was a gaping black hole and no sound came out, but our plant sis realized she must have been asking where we wanted to go.

The elevator took us into some ancient parking lot full of car carcasses, there was a houndmaster Savant waiting for us with a three-headed dog called Cerberus, a funny coincidence since that's what I called my character too.
She was waiting for us and wanted to disassemble us, we had a Spine stand-off since we all three were incredibly slow compared to her riding the dog. The houndmaster was trying to be cute and play hit-and-run using her mobility and range (Rapid movement's no joke, made us all waste an attack), but after her Rapid movement was down for the turn we just ganked the shit out of her.
>>
>>76219137
Our sorta-alraune dunked on her with a Meat Whip crit, then I promptly learned that Limiter is fucking strong by making her eat two free Fury-boosted chainsaw attacks back to back (thanks, Count order. Thanks, Antenna and Judgment!). Seriously, I can't get over how fucking fun using a chainsaw to hack off rotting flesh feels; I know how to use one in real life, but it's not that fun by comparison.
Anyways, we just decimated her into a talking head and she surrenders, offering to help us if we spare her life. We talk it out and agree; two of us already hate our Necromancer, but my dog is subservient to her (naturally), so we'll see. For now one of us gets to wear the Houndmaster's severed head as a part around our torso, so that's going to be fun.

Yeah, I don't know what the FUCK is going on but I'm liking it so far. It was a learning experience, especially for the flow of combat.

It'd be a dogshit part for a doll. It'd take multiple reinforcements to mitigate the downside, or you just play a Stacy/Gothic and play regen tank. The problem with that is you're actively doing even less than such a build normally does and potentially annoying the GM by making 1 damage attacks completely pointless. It's an enemy only part for a reason.

>>76218737
>Playing a song that inflicts madness through some method
>Hallucinations
>Attacks specifically created by necromancers to make a doll feel pain and thus take madness
>Makes them hear things they never want to hear from their sisters
>Make particularly disturbing noises, such as torturing another doll or mimicking the screams of prior victims
>Disturbing attacks such as having maggots burst out of the PC after they've taken a hit from an enemy.
>Horrific creatures making lewd/obscene gestures/motions. A dozen faces moaning in ecstasy as you strike the monster is going to shake most people.

>>76210833
Not that much but that's more a consequence of Psychadelic being a bit too much of a burden due to lacking a reinforcement part. If we're still gonna talk homebrew, the blast from the past version can enjoy some synergy due to having a bit more of a support bend. That combo is never going to be terribly good at combat unless you take holic, but an Alice might be able to manage something like grabbing Chameleon, Prayer, Growth and Pawn's gambit to turn invisible to hide until the PCs get their madness removal and repairs, and just shuffle shit around with pawn's gambit when it hits your count.
>>
>>76219233
>It's an enemy only part for a reason.

I literally made that part up and then took a screenshot of it.

Its not on the wiki anywhere.
and if there is a enemy only apart with the same name then that is a coincidence.

In one case I had them feel farther and farther away from everything that's going on. This changed all their fetter effects temporarily to dependant as well.
Dolls that went heartbroken around this reanimated pond of gore eventually became like statues.
The doll was still functioning and their body was still standing, their minds were just kind of forced into a state of careless unmoving fuege.
The two survivors came back later with a working car they found, and started rushing into the danger zone, grabbing dolls, and rushing back out again.
Then they hid all the strangers in a cave, and are looking for something to make their sisters want to respond to things again.
They will be meeting their new sisters next session.
>>
>>76219751
But with a passive defend 1 they are so much more bullyable.
After all the best bullying targets can't fight back effectively, and take a lot of abuse.

I hope they put signs around the gore pond.

Would reducing the AP drain to -2 make it viable?
>>
>>76229891
Anything that will drain AP will usualy be rather bad, so I'd still say no. It's effectively still 2 parts that you need to dedicate to it just to not have a net negative.
>>
>>76230404
Or a tier three like extra head.

>Coleo's never met her Necromancer.

Shhhh. Nobody correct him.
>>
>>76229891

Making it viable just makes it a pain in the dick for the GM as someone with that and protect completely invalidates 1 damage attacks. Gauntlet/Crab legs can already be pretty annoying as those attacks have a 60-70% chance of doing nothing. So for someone looking to play a "tank" type of deal, they'll love it, most others won't want it and making it "viable" will just make the problems it brings more prevalent.

At long last, finally freed from the shackles of my work week, storytime can begin!

This was originally pitched as a one-shot, but it wound up being split into two sessions. Characters were pre-generated by the GM, minus memory fragments and fetters which were rolled once the players had chosen which characters they wanted to play.

Only three of the six characters feature prominently in the story, since there were only three players, but I'm going to go ahead and dump their info real quick anyway since it'll help a bit with understanding what's going on.

Also: there was quite a bit of 'note-passing' in this game between the GM and players. I'm going to include this content in spoilered text, but if you want to experience the game as it was played, WITHOUT SPOILERS, then you should avoid the spoilered text. This includes memory fragments and fetters in the info dump, as we weren't completely privy to each other's sheets at the beginning of the game.
If you do want to read through without spoilers, I would recommend going back afterward and looking through them for added context, as there's quite a bit of meat to them.

I'll post up the extra characters first:

And with the info dump done, onto the story proper.
>The year is 2143. The world still enjoys the fruits of scientific progress and unity as mankind studies the computational capabilities of the South Andes Garden-Mold and the philosophical and theological implications of its related applications.
>After the initial Undead Scare, mankind recovered, and a slow normalization of those brought back via Necromancy has begun... however, discrimination and paranoia still run rampant in major population centers, understandably - if unjustly - so.
>The greater world is politically unstable and rests on the precipice of disaster... but that is not your concern.
_ _ _ _

>It is Summer 2143, the party are reanimated youths staying on the isolated land of their blessedly accepting relatives, the Clays. When they first met, they were still human, but even now the Clays care for them. In young Nephele's case, there is an even sympathy.
>The Clays own a large swathe of farmland and forested hills built up over the course of several generations and recently expanded due to certain events. Most Summers spent here are spent exploring their property and generally goofing off, albeit rarely getting into actual trouble.
>Today, the plan was to take Nephele's buggy out to the creek, but...
>...Ethwyn woke up earlier than the others this morning, and noticed the Master Bedroom was silent. Indeed, the entire house was silent, and Mr. and Mrs. Clay were nowhere to be found. This... was odd, because their usual habits would place them performing various tasks about the yard in clear view, and yet they are absent, and their vehicles remain present. Worse, Teppe and Laus are missing as well, though she's yet to check Nephele's room for Mars.
>Even worse, when she thinks back to the last time she saw any of them...
>Ethwyn is dead certain it's been days, and no one said anything about any plans to leave the house.

>Nephele looks like she's had a sleepless night; baggy eyes, furrowed brow, a bit pasty looking. She's nursing a cup of coffee in one of the living room chairs.
- - -
>Waking up and realizing that something was distinctly very... wrong was not a fun experience for Ethwyn, but realizing what was wrong made it far worse. After going to the window and making sure she wasn't imagining things, Ethwyn hurried over to Shirley's bed and shook her awake a bit abruptly.
>"Shirley... get up, something isn't right."
>Shirley is so fast asleep she might as well be (re)dead if it weren't for the fact she was chewing on her pillow. It takes a moment for Ethwyn to rouse her.
>"Wha? What? What-is-it?" Shirley bolts awake abruptly, climbing her sister like a jungle gym to get upright and rushes over to get dressed while she listens.
>Ethwyn reacts as she always does to Shirley climbing all over her; she doesn't. "The Clay's... they aren't here. Anywhere... and I don't think that they have been for- days, even... I'm not sure why I know that, but I'm certain of it!"
>"Are you sure you didn't just have another nightmare?" Shirley nearly falls as she hops on one leg to get her second sock on. "What do you mean days?" She slips her boots on and gets to tying.
>Ethwyn frowns, hurrying to get dressed as well, and checking on Eiffel in her cage to make sure she was okay. And still blue. Excellent. "Look, I know it sounds crazy, but think about it, when was the last time we saw them? I'm pretty sure it's been days..."
- - -
>Nephele blows on her coffee and takes a tentative sip. "Still too hot..." she grumbles.

Because I forgot to mention it in her info dump; Nephele's mostly cybernetic. Her limbs are all high quality mechanical replacements and her legs taper down to points instead of proper feet.

>Shirley gives Ethwyn a sort of look. "Yesterday. Mr. Clay tripped and dumped the mashed potatoes on the floor on his way to the dinner table. Remember?"
>She pinches herself.
>"Ok so I'm not dreaming either." Shirley moves over to look out the window, but it's too early in the morning to see much more than Mr. Clay's truck parked outside under the yard's lamp.
>Ethwyn sighs a bit, shifting from one foot to the other. "Look, I just... maybe I just had a really bad dream and I haven't really woken from it yet, but... I just have a really bad feeling, okay? I feel like I haven't seen Teppe or Laus in awhile either... I'm gonna go check on Nephele and Mars..."
>Shirley hugs Ethwyn "It's going to be fine. I'll go with you." She lets go and follows Ethwyn out of their shared bedroom.
- - -
>Nephele kicks her feet up on the ottoman and sinks deeper into her chair and lets her eyes slide closed. She takes a deep breath in and out through her nose as she savors the smell of her coffee. It doesn't appear to do much for her mood.
- - -
>"Mr. Clay! Mrs. Clay! Neffi! You in the house or did you leave us all to sleep in!?" Shirley yells as she walks down the second-story hallway.
>Nephele's eyes peek open. "I'm downstairs!" she hollers back half-heartedly.
>Hearing Nephele call from downstairs makes Ethwyn release a small sigh of relief... but only a small one, since she only heard Nephele and nobody else.
>Shirley peaks her head into Nephele and Mars' room.
>There's only one bed in here, though there's a stylized N and M carved into the bedpost; Nephele and Mars usually share a bed when Mars is staying at the house.
>The room is neat enough. The bed is made but there are clear signs of life about.
>There's a glint out of the corner of her eye. On Nephele's dresser.
>It's Mars' glasses, neatly folded and set aside. Their bright red frames mark a sharp contrast with the natural wood of the furniture.
[3/?]
>>
>>76240973
>Shirley snags them up and moves back out into the hallway to check on Laus' and Teppe's room with Ethwyn.
>The room is bare and bereft of any evidence of activity. The beds are made, the floors are clear, and there are no personal effects of either girl to be found except for the 'T' and 'L' carved into the bedposts of either bed to mark their owner.
>"This is getting weird." Shirley says slowly. clearly disconcerted. "What day is it?" She goes to check her phone.
>It is, in fact, the 17th of June. The day after yesterday.
>"I really don't like this..." Ethwyn takes Shirley's hand, hurrying downstairs with her, heading for Nephele.
>"Yeah." Shirley follows. As the pair hits the stairs, Shirley shouts down to the first floor; "Neffi were on our way!"
>Nephele perks up a little as she hears footsteps coming down the stairs. She's mid-sip of her coffee when Ethwyn and Shirley pop into the room. "Morning you two." Her expression shifts from tired to mild confusion. "S'everything OK? It's early for you two."
>"Where is everybody?" Shirley asks.
>Ethwyn shifts from one foot to the other again, twisting her scarf in her hands. "Okay look, this'll sound crazy, I know it, but I swear I'm not dreaming! Mr. and Mrs. Clay aren't here, and I'm positive I haven't seen them in days! And... and Teppe and Laus are missing I think... and I don't know where Mars is either... something doesn't feel right, Nephele..."
>Shirley bobs forward, holding out the glasses. "I found Mars's glasses. But she wasn't there, and the other guest room was cleaned out. Everybody was here when I went to bed last night. Did you stay up all night? Are you ok?"

>Nephele's eyes blink blearily. "Ma n' Pa got a call after you two went to bed and had to head over to Tarver's Town." She sighs. "One of their friends is in end-of-life it sounds like. And she's not interested in a revival either. Which I guess suits her. Mrs. Miller was always a real spiritual lady when I was a kid. I guess she still is." Her eyebrows quirk abruptly as Shirley presents her with Mars' glasses.
>"Eh? Did Mars leave these here?" She blinks, taking the object from Shirley's hand. "I sure hope these are her spares."
>These glasses aren't supposed to be here.
>They're cold in her hands. Too cold.
>No... your hands just feel number. It is a trick of perception.
>It hurts to hold them.

>"They take the other girls with them?" Shirley asks. "What's kept you up all night? Was there a storm? Should we make breakfast? Are you hungry?"
>Ethwyn frowns, brow furrowing as she processes Nephele's answer. "But... I'm sure I haven't seen them in... and that doesn't tell me where Teppe and Laus are, and-" She bites her lip, and reaches up to gently pet Eiffel on her shoulder. "Something doesn't make sense here..."
>"Take them- What?" Nephele pushes Shirley back a little bit, patting her head like only an older sister can. She takes another sip of coffee and clips Mars' glasses to the collar of her pajama shirt, looking something like a disgruntled office worker from the newspaper funnies. "Girls. It's just us here. Last time the others were here was Easter." Her expression softens noticeably. "Are you two feeling all right?"

-That's right. Mars disappeared. A long time ago, she just vanished one day, without saying goodbye.
-There was no notice or warning. Your charge was simply there one day, then gone the next.
-You don't know what happened to her. You know you don't know what happened to her, and you got new charges afterward but...

>Ethwyn inhales sharply at this. "Easter... but..." She fell silent, wringing her scarf even more furiously in her hands as she tried to think back.
>Why was she so sure they were missing? Why was she so sure she hadn't seen the Clays in days? That they hadn't so much as mentioned an intent to leave?
-That blurry memory. Why did she look at you like that?
-Those glasses are hers.
-They aren't spares at all.
-Those glasses aren't supposed to be here...
-but they were exactly where you left them.
-Cold in your hands...? No, your hands are just numb.
-Nephele's heart is aching.

>"Easter. Easter?!" Shirley's eyes go wide. "Oh god... This is bad. We need to see a professional. None of us are on the same page. Maybe this is undead alzheimers or something and we're patient zeros."
>Ethwyn grumbled to herself and immediately turns around and started for the front door taking a firm hold of her bat on the way, intent on checking out the outside for... something.
>Nephele clamps down gently on Shirley's shoulders to keep the girl from bouncing off the walls. "Shirley, Shirley. Everything's fine." She giggles gently. "I was going to offer you some of the coffee but maybe some of ma's tea would do you better." She blinks as Ethwyn stalks towards the door. "Do you... want any breakfast? I can whip up some eggs."
>"Sis. Sis! We shouldn't separate if we're losing touch with reality. We might forget eachother or something!" Shirley says as Ethwyn goes. She pops up and down on the balls of her feet nervously then looks up into Neffi's eyes. It's a pleading look.

>Ethwyn suddenly whips around, pointing at Nephele. "Something is -wrong- and I'm going to find out what. If you want to just sit around you can..." She trails off, looking at Shirley for a moment before sighing heavily, seemingly deflating. "But if something is wrong, then separating probably is a bad idea, yeah..."
>"We just told you Neffi," Shirley pleads. "As far as I know everyone was here last night. All eight of us. But Sis thinks they've been missing for days now. You said it's only been the five of us."
>"Well I know you told me but- The other girls haven't been here in weeks and Ma n' Pa just didn't want to wake you up. I-" Nephele shrugs helplessly. "I don't know why you two would think they've been here. It's just been us an the folks since Summer started."
>"That's -just not- what I remember Neffi," Shirley says quietly but firmly and with dread. "That's why I'm scared."
>Ethwyn grits her teeth, and walks up to Nephele, deliberately invading her personal space. Eiffel chirps at her disapprovingly as well - or at least that's how Ethwyn interprets it. "Where is Mars then? If everything is fine and it's just been us, and Mr. and Mrs. Clay just went to Tarver's Town, then where, exactly, is Mars?"
>Nephele blinks, uncomprehending. "I- I just said she hasn't been here. I'm not even sure where you found her glasses because her parents haven't called Pa about anything."
>"Maybe she went out to watch the sheep. She loves those," Shirley says that with conviction. And it's true. Mars always did love the farm animals.
>"Maybe she was half a sleep and forgot her glasses?" She floats this with much less confidence.
>She wriggles out from under Neffi's hand and heads for the foyer to grab a rain coat, flashlight, and her bow and quiver.

Would Shooting Attack 1 + Area Attack + chain attack 5 Ap cost 9 be balanced for a horror?
>>
>>76244455 Horrors are the Swiss army knife of enemy types when it comes to building units made to fill specific niches in am encounter.

So it depends on what the horror in question is meant to do in the battle you are building it for, and the party you are tailoring the encounter for.
>>
>>76244455
What are the maximum and minimum range on that attack part?

What is the horror meant to do in encounters?

What other abilities are you intending to horror to have?

Chain 5 is rather wierd to see outside of very large legions (legions usually have a chain attack that scales based on the number of units in the legion divided by 10 rounded down, or less commonly divided by 5 rounded down).

Chain is very swingy since the first attack in a chain to miss stops the rest from happening.

9 is a LOT of AP and 5 is a LOT of chain. I would roll them both back since at 9 AP your only going to be using once in an entire turn, or set that horror back really hard in turn two.

Let's say this horror has 12 AP (which is a lot for a horror in most circumstances) assuming it does nothing else and the battle starts with a doll in range and the horror attacks first, it's now down to 3 AP. If it attacks again it's down to -6 AP.

That means if it survives to turn 2 and still alive, has all it's AP parts that got it up to a Max AP of 12, and still has this attack part, then it is going to start turn 2 with 6 AP.

That means pretty much everything is going to get to act at least once before this thing gets its third chance to try to attack. If it has lost AP parts then it will be starting turn 2 with even less AP.

Fights often end in the first 2 turns, but assuming this thing still has all it's AP parts and that attack part and has done nothing but attack so far (This is unlikely), then it will be starting turn 4 at 9 AP. Which means it can attack a maximum of once in that turn.

With chain attack if you flub the roll on any of the early attack rolls then the rest of the chain goes to waste. Also hinder parts are a thing. If your horror rolls a 6 on it's first attack in the chain and a doll is in range to use a hinder 1 part and chooses to do so, then the first attack misses and all the other attacks in the chain automatically fail, and you spent 9 AP.

>Ethwyn pauses and takes a long, deep breath. "Shirley found those glasses in your room. In the room you two share. Look..." She bites her lip and placed a hand on Nephele's shoulder. "Clearly our memory of things is messed up... but me and Shirley at least agree that it hasn't been just us here... so just... humor us, I guess? Come with us."
>"I..." Nephele's calm breaks a little. She slumps, keeping her hands up just enough that she doesn't dump her coffee. "I- I guess we can go looking around if you're really worried. I don't really know what you expect to find." Her eyebrows pop up a little as Shirley pops back into the room with her stuff. "It's a little warm out for a coat, Shirley. It's gunna be ninety today."
>She closes her eyes for a moment and takes a breath. "Do you two at least want something to eat before we go out? I can fix up some oatmeal. Or maybe some grits. We've got some leftover bacon fat to flavor them."
>Ethwyn shifts on her feet again. "Something quick, then. I don't want to waste any time..."

>The Clays' land is mostly flat, spared the most egregious sloping of the surrounding hill country. The land closest to the house has been cleared into a rough square and then subdivided into quadrants.
>The southwest quadrant contains the Clays' home, the new barn, Mr. Clay's toolshed, and the garage. The Northwest field is laying fallow this season. The Northeast quadrant is grazing land for the Clays' herd of sheep and is also where the old barn is located, which is where Nephele keeps her buggy and where the girls spend a good deal of time goofing off. The southeast quadrant is grazing land for the Clays' cattle.
>The whole field is surrounded in a dense forest of pine and deciduous trees, which the Clays' property line lays some far ways beyond. The road into town juts out from the northern tip of the property.
>The girls have been making a circuit around the property for a few minutes now. It's a quiet morning.
>MAAAAAAAARS! MAAAAAAARS! Where are you!? Shirley shouts as she plays her flashlight this way and that while walking down the lawn.
>MAAA-AH-chOOO!" Shirley doubles over with a sudden sneeze then straightens back up wiping her nose. "Awwwh-that hurt."
>Nephele flinches as Shirley yells just a bit too close to her ear.
>It's eighty degrees and Ethwyn shivers.
>She briefly pulls her scarf tighter around herself, before turning to look toward the barn. "...I heard something. Come on." She started toward the old barn.
>Shirley shuts up and follows Ethwyn from a distance, keeping an eye out.
>Nephele pads behind the other two, though she's mostly looking off toward the sheep pasture.
>As Ethwyn turns to look into the sheep pasture herself, she sees that all of them, every single sheep, are staring at her.

>Shirley swings her flashlight over towards the sheep herd.
>Some of them are looking blandly at the group, but most of the herd is milling about idly and paying them little mind. "No they aren't," she says bluntly.
>Nephele blinks. "It's kind of weird that they aren't. We're the only thing moving in the field." She shrugs.
>Ethwyn shivers again, biting her lip. "R-right... guess I was seeing things. Let's keep going then."
>The three of them eventually make it to the old barn without further incident.
>Nephele's buggy is right where it's supposed to be. The whole barn seems to have been left undisturbed since they were last here.
>Shirley perks up about as soon as she sees the buggy. "I call bed. We can find Mars a lot faster this way."
>There's a moment of mild bickering as Ethwyn insists on rigging up some rope along the buggy's rollcage for Shirley to hold onto.
>It's simple enough to find some, thankfully. It is a barn after all.
>"Ah. Here we are. But Shirley can just hold onto the rollcage you know?" Nephele takes some rope off a hook and holds it up for Ethwyn. "It's what she does all the time normally. S'why I don't let any of you drive anymore."
>Shirley hops up into the buggy's rear bed, flopping face-down like a pancake.
>"Well excuse me for trying to be safe when I'm already worried about my sisters..." Ethwyn grumbles a bit getting into the passenger seat. "...Still holding onto this rope."
>Shirley rights herself, gripping onto the buggy's rollcage and posturing herself like she's about to set off on a pair of skis.
>Ethwyn takes the passenger seat and moves Eiffel to her lap, sheltering the bird to make sure the wind doesn't affect it too badly.
>Nephele produces the keys like they're a coin in a magic trick and climbs into the driver's seat, starting the engine.

>Shirley nods. "I like that plan."
>Nephele frowns. "If Mars were here she'd probably be messing around in one of the animal pastures. She loves the sheep."
>On the way, Ethwyn glances at Nephele after awhile. "Hey Nephele... why did the woman buy a tiny wooden infant?"
>"To ward off evil spirits?" Shirley interjects.
>Nephele starts a loop around the sheep pasture, scanning the treeline in front of them and leaving the other two to actually scan for their quarry. "A wooden infant?" she answers absentmindedly. "I dunno."
>Ethwyn smiled slightly, despite her own worries as she patted Eiffel gently. "Because she wanted a whittle baby."
>"You got that from candy!" Shirley accuses.

>Ethwyn nods sharply. "I can, yeah..." She prepared to jump out as soon as they got there.
>Nephele hops out of the cart as soon as it's stopped and puts a nearby bucket up to the spout. As soon as it's full, her right arm separates at the elbow and rockets off toward the roof. It dumps the bucket and turns for a return flight. She's filling a second one in her left already. "Shirley, try and wet the walls so they don't go up."
>Shirley leaps over the side of the bed and goes looking for a ladder. "Cooooooooooool," She says in awe as she runs, her head tracking Neffi's arm's flight through the air before snapping back to attention.
>As she works the pump, Ethwyn spies what might be a person standing by the treeline past the cow pasture. But when she focuses on it, the shape vanishes.
>Ethwyn pauses, looking off into the cow pasture for a moment before resuming working the water pump.

>Shirley is chasing a line of fire spawned by the exploded lamp. It's rushing along the wall, toward a pile of tarps sitting in the corner of the barn.
>"Banzai!" Shirley swings down and impacts the racing fire line putting the head of it out, though she gets severe burns along her forearm in the process. And also klonking her face on the barn wall.
>Nephele's arms rocket forward, flying to dump the contents of her buckets on the fire directly around Shirley
>Ethwyn palms her face as she sees Shirley slam into the wall. The fire spawned by the lamp is still spreading, despite the girls' best efforts. "Damnit... Shirley, where are the fire blankets?"

>Ethwyn snags another fire blanket and aids Shirley in smothering the rest of the fire.
>Shirley starts smothing the fire back along it's initial track, regularly looking around for more sneaky snakes of fire trying to make a break for... well anywhere.
>Nephele's arms fly up and snap up another fire blanket from the rafters, moving to reinforce Shirley's efforts at the head of the fire.
>The three of them, plus the nearly torrential downpour outside, are able to get the fire under control. The barn is blackened, and there are holes in the roof where the blaze started, but it's not under serious risk of coming down around them
>Once the fire is out Shirley turns her forearms over to see how bad the damage is. As she checks them out she starts talking "The fire ghosts seemed to really want the tarp pile where I saw Mars. Maybe we should check in there..."
>Ethwyn looks over at the tarps. "That... doesn't sound good."

>Ethwyn actually does find something. She produces a sheaf of papers in short order, neatly stacked and in good condition.

>"Maybe she forgot her coat when she took them and she didn't want them to get wet when she got caught in the rain." Shirley proposes.

>Shirley looks outside at the pouring rain. She walks out to the doorway and looks for mud tracks and other signs someone besides the three of us was here recently. Turning her flashlight out into the dark.
>"Hmmm." Not seeing any Mars tracks, she goes back inside the barn. "I didn't see any signs of anyone besides the three of us having come by."
>Nephele continues thumbing through the papers. "There's a lot of random detail here, but it mostly just looks like detailed noted on the livestock. She's named a few of them, tracked some social bonds in the herds - especially among the cows - and notes a missing sheep at one point. If I remember right that date's a full week before Pa noticed; he found that one half eaten down by the creek. He thought it got out and got got by a hog."
>Nephele shrugs. "I have no idea why she'd hide this out here." Quieter, more to herself (almost injured, really), "She knows I wouldn't snoop."

>"No Neffi." Shirley pouts and leans forward on the rollcage "It isn't funny."
>Ethwyn slowly turns to Nephele, and gently takes her face in her hands. "Nephele, we were JUST in the house, on the phone. I felt... something, the phone cut out, and now we are suddenly here... and just before, you had this look on your face like... you reminded me of whenever we accidentally spooked a rabbit. You know, the way they just tense up and stare? That was you."
>"We gotta get out of here," Shirley says sadly "There's something really wrong with us."
>Nephele starts chewing on the inside of her cheek. She shifts back and forward from her toes to her heels over and over again. "I- we- ya'll wanted to check around the creek for clues or something. But maybe we should grab the truck and take you two into the doctor." She makes another dry swallow.

Speaking of builds:
Would it be feasible to build around Sniper Rifle?
I was pleasantly surprised by it's capability when attaching it to an NPC helper in a one-shot but I have a hard time seeing it perform in higher threat level engagements.

My first inclination would be to build something for crit-seeking. Gun God and Concentration would give me a +3 to hit plus any supports I could tack on for extra consistency. Just peck hard at the important bits of enemy Savants over and over again until the rest of the party can close in on them.

Man your game sounds like a blast. Wish I had a GM that cool, mine seems to really have bought into the "Nechronica is an eroguro pedo game" bullshit and only seems to be trying to maim and/or rape our characters. He gleefully put in a houserule that if we let the enemies rape us, combat ended automatically without havikg to flee, then got reeeeeal pissy we beat his OP encounter.
I really want to bail but nobody else seems to until the GM tries something particularly fucky and I really like the group.
>>
>>76261943

Have you talked with the others about this? If you aren't going to bail yet then this really seems like a thing to talk to your fellow players about and then bring up with the GM.

If the other players are into it then that's extra reason to bail. If they aren't then all of you can articulate your issues to the GM.
>>
>>76261943

Are you sure that stuff wasn't done as a joke? At minimum the other players are probably seeing it as a joke.

>>76259043
It can be very feasible. You just have to take a Requiem/Baroque. Start with Lullaby, Gun God and Instrument of Evil. Instrument of evil doubles the base damage so that every non-crit will still do 2 damage and Lullaby doubles the amount of shots you're putting out per round. Sure, you take a -1 to hit, but its worth it. Then pick up concentration with your first 10 favor.

>>76263152
I hope so. After he was told off he sort of calmed down but he never quite stopped being angry in that passive-aggressive way (i.e.: it's a pbp and he only posts once every three days, ignores pings and deliberately "forgets" to give favor), but maybe it's just my brain problems seeing things where there isn't any.

These seem like further red flags to me.
>>
>>76263614

The post rate thing is a red flag if he's posting way slower than he did prior. Might be wise to frame it as a "Hey man, is something going on? You've been really slow to post."

>deliberately "forgets" to give favor

That's not unusual and might just be honest forgetfulness. If you didn't calculate the favor based on the threat before the fight, you'd have to get around to doing that.

Adding on pure Baroques that have taken Mutated Being, since you can just negate the downside half the time.
You can also choose to just break the part if it's location gets hit. The extra AP is going to be a bigger deal on turn one where it's really important to get ahead than on turn 2 or 3 when the death spirals should have already started.

Thoughts on a tiny doll game?

I figure being tiny makes environments and interesting and challenging setting that would be too small or not dangerous enough for people sized dolls.

While at the same time being able to make mincemeat of most non-enhanced vermin's and small creatures.

For instance exploring partially collapsed ruins for their treasures and to kill and harvest the bioweapons that have made their home there for their rare parts.

Or maybe the necromancer, who is actually nice, is away and you have to fend off some enemies sneaking in to commit a hiest or so some other bad things.

If nobody seems to be leading the scheduling effort don't be afraid of taking the initiative there. Sometimes the next session would never happen save for a player putting effort into prodding everyone into figuring out a time and day and sticking to it.

But more seriously, you do it just like normal death flags if you have a timetable already set out. If you don't have a timetable then you start hinting ahead of time that something is wrong.

Scale and location are going to be pretty important for whatever you want to do.

Personally, I would run something in the vein of
>Small Soldiers
+
>Gratuitous body horror
If given the opportunity. Setting the dolls around Toy Story sized would arguably give you the most options for everyday items being used as reinforcement parts.

The move '9' about the tiny burlap robots might also be decent inspiration.

Agreed.

I would recommend playing army men Sarge's Heroes 2 levels set in the human world.

How do they make those maps? Do they just scale everything up except the players and items they can pickup, or do also retexture things that are made bigger on the map to be more detailed,

Or do they keep the map the same and just scale DOWN the players and things they can pick up?
>>
Remember.
>When one's Action Points are zero or less, they can use no Maneuvers except for those with Timing "Auto."

That means the vast majority of
Defend
Support
Hinder
Hinder Move
Aren't doable at 0 or less AP.

So if you or other dolls still have AP after an enemy goes to 0 or negative AP, it won't be able to defend itself or hinder your attacks.

Also if YOU go into negatives before the enemy, the enemy can attack you withlut worrying about your hinder or defend parts, and if the enemy attacks another doll, you won't be able to hinder that attack even if you have unused hinder parts with the appropriate range.
>>
>>76284316
>When one's Action Points are zero or less, they can use no Maneuvers except for those with Timing "Auto."

Crab Legs and Gauntlet are timing Auto, but the free defend partof their effects are worded as.

>During Damage Timing, you gain "Defend 1" for Legs only.
and
>During Damage Timing, you gain "Defend 1" for Arms only.

So do you still get defends from them if you are at AP 0 or less, or do you not?
>>
It hwr birthday soon
Whish luxk
>>
>>76287283
Damage timing still happens, you just can't use Damage timing Manuevers. Since Crab Legs and Gauntlet are Auto their effect procs anyway.

If they were treated like Damage Timing Manuevers then you could only use the Defend aspect of them once per turn.

It kinda depends on how organic you make the Bionicles. I know people always calle them robots but whenever you see them in movies they tend to look pretty organic. The Rakshi from Mask of Light stick out in my mind particulalry.

Also, there's really not much stopping dolls from incorporating non-organic material, hence Junk Part. I figure a lot of them simply choose not to for humanity/comfort reasons.

Death isn't the worst thing that can happen to you in Nechronica.
You probably won't be able to consistently scare your players/characters all the way through the campaign, but a good way to raise tension is to threaten things that are important to the party but not actually part of the party. Like friendly NPCs the players/characters care about, or maybe threatening a treasured item (not necessarily a Treasure) or location that's important to them.

It's also important to remember to have 'downtime.' Not necessarily time where the PCs aren't doing anything, but time where they can unwind from being tense or on edge all the time. It'll make the moments of tension in your campaign stand out more and keep everything from blending together.

I thought NPCs aren't ry a thing in Nechronica, ones you can talk to anyway.
>>
>>76312243
There's a whole enemy class of not!Dolls called Savants that you can even form Fetters towards.
>>
>>76312243
They aren't strictly vanilla I guess, but you can definitely have them. The campaign I finished this year had three NPC party members following the players around, I ran a one-shot with an NPC noncombatant and a friendly doll, and a game I'm in right now takes place in a populated city.
The only real catch is that Nechronica doesn't really have deep social mechanics, but that's not super difficult to work around.
>>
>>76312243
One of the premade modules lets you save the Savant if you do everything right, and if you invite her along with you after the fight she'll join your party (and if you don't, she falls off the ship while saying goodbye and gets crushed on the rocks because why have nice things I guess?).

Continuing on.

>The girls enjoy a nice breakfast of eggs and homemade pancakes, eaten mostly in silence.
>Aside from the three of them shifting about in the kitchen, there's absolutely no sound in the rest of the house.
>They eat and clean up, and gather there things for the trip.
>After putting her coat on Shirley registers a weaight in a pocket. And takes out Mars' notes. ""Oh riiiiiiight. "Did the VGH try on my coat? no wait then it would be the whole coat and not just he paper. hmmmm. Do these look haunted to either of you?" She holds up the papers so the others can see. And starts perusing the writing.
>Nephele blinks. "Mars' notes? What do you mean by haunted?" She blinks again. "Oh. You mean they feel warm?"
>"Yeah. There a thermodynamic anomaly." Shirley says it like it's just so cool. "At least I hope that's it and something didn't make them radioactive."
>Ethwyn raised a brow, looking at the papers for a moment. "...That's hot."
>Shirley makes giger counter sounds with her throat.
>"Her glasses were the same." Nephele unconsciously touches the pair of glasses clipped onto her collar. "I think the three of them - Mars, Laus, and Teppe - may still be... here? Or remnants of them, anyway. Her glasses have been warm for a little while now. Her notes may be doing the same." She leans back on her heels and sighs, looking at nothing in particular. "And... I guess I owe the two of you an apology."

>Ethwyn rests her bat on her shoulder, frowning a bit. "No, you don't. You had no control over any of this, and were trying to protect us. I'm sorry you had to deal with this alone for so long... but if they are still here... that means that we can save them. That's even more reason to do this."
>Shiely nods in concurrance with Etheyn's words. "But you said they deleted her? Maybe it was some kind of teleportation, or time doohickey that decoupled them from us?"
>Nephele shakes her head. "No. They're gone. All gone. Or supposed to be. Their things weren't supposed to be here either; I couldn't even see her glasses until you showed them to me." Her brow creases for a moment in thought, then relaxes. "But I still owe you an apology. I lied about Mars' notes."
>"What did they say? Where did she go? Where did they all try to go, to Town?" Shirley inhales, but then stops herself from launching more questions. "Sorry. I know this is hard for you."
>Nephele sighs again. "In order, the messages she hid read: Mr. and Mrs. Clay haven't gone to town. - I'm going to find them. - Tomorrow. I'll bring Mr. Clay's axe. - Why won't you believe me? - I'm sorry."
>She sinks in on herself. "The last I remember she was walking off into the woods. She was headed beyond the woods, where the property and world zone ends."
>"I don't know where Teppe went. She didn't want to fight; I think she may have just been unlucky and run too far for her own good."
>"So, Is this a videogame or something? Do we have bodies on the outside world anymore?" Shirley steps forward and puts an arm around Ethwyn and Neffi. Her voice is quieter, and subdued, but willed to be firm. "Still real hugs, even if it's a computer world we're hugging in. We're real."

>Nephele looks only mildly affected by the stillness, almost like she only barely notices it. "The openings are a result of different areas being connected together at points or ways they aren't supposed to be. The... VGH? They were the ones doing that. But things have been failing since we all woke up this morning; that's why Mr. and Mrs. Clay aren't here; their systems have stopped working."
>She looks out along the treeline. "The ones for the animals may be doing the same. I don't think anything has purposefully halted them."
>Ethwyn scratches her head, groaning a bit. "I... look, this is all confusing the hell out of me. All I care about it making sure that my family is safe. And the only way you two will be safe is if we deal with whatever is going on in the woods right now."

How do you make combat serve as part of the story instead of a break in the story?
>>
>>76162495
Has anybody statred giant robots, monsters, or vehicles as a combination of multiple horrors or horrs and Savants to reflect that ruining one part or sectionay not prevent the other parts from functioning, even if the whole thing is reduced in function by the loss?
>>
>>76318518

It can work pretty well for representing such a thing. As a bonus, if you don't want to force destruction of every part you can just have one part that has "If this is destroyed every other component is annihilated" and then play around with giving parts of it protect or something of that nature.
>>
>>76318518
>ruining one part or sectionay not prevent the other parts from functioning, even if the whole thing is reduced in function by the loss?
Isn't that just how everything in Nechronica short of Legions works?
>>
>>76316781
Make the combat have stakes relevant to the story?
>>
>>76320240

Yes but there are certain advantages to doing it the way that was asked about.

>Since each component is its own entity, they can each have their own AP track. This can work well for enemies that are fighting the group "solo" as an actual solo fight is hilariously one sided.
>It can better represent larger enemies. Something the size of a house, it makes more sense that you can specifically target the arms or legs or whatever.
>It can be used for massive things that you want to say take up multiple zones.
>Dismembers on savants is a set "You lose everything" treating what could be a savant as multiple horrors lets dismember have an effect without it immediately cutting off 25%+ of the enemy in single hit.
>>

>"What IS going on in the woods?" Shirley asks. "Also Neffi. Can you back yourself up or something? I don't want you to, to, to die if the game crashes."
>Nephele chews her lip as she considers an answer. "I'm... not sure. All I can tell you is that the bounds of the property is as far as we're allowed to go. And that the others breached the boundary. Whatever we're looking for it'll be outside of the property."
>She puts on an incredulous face at Shirley's comment. "I'm not going to die if the simulation breaks. If it's like any other computer then there are probably crash recovery systems. Something this complicated is bound to have good ones."
>Shirley lets out a breath she had been holding. "Ok. Yeah. That sounds good. Recovery systems. Yes. Time to search for the mystery at the edge of space."
>As they proceed into the woods, there are no birds, bugs, or other critters to make any sounds. The leaves do not rustle, and even their steps upon the ground and brush produce no sounds. The world is utterly quiet.
>They walk for some time - a time hard to gauge - and come across an old firepit.
>They've all been here before. Definitely. Probably. It's hard to say how many times, or how long it's been.
>The campfire's ash is scattered across the clearing. There's something in the dust. It's a playing card. The protective casing is unstained.
>"Is this one of ours? Wai-" Shirley starts whispering and looking around. "The VGH left us a calling card." She points at the firepit. Then readies her bow, checking the trees for unwelcome watchers "Should one of us go get it?"
>Ethwyn frowns. "No... I think... that belongs to Laus..."

>The card within is a foil-backed five-star, depicting a famous player.

>Nephele's breathing tightens. She cups the card in both hands gingerly, as if it were about to crumble away. She clutches it to her heart and rocks back and forth for a moment before lifting herself up of the ground. "She never even took this out of its case."

>Shirley blinks, Then looks over at Ethwyn. Then back to Neffi. "I'm Sorry. I'm just worried. I didn't mean to get short with you. Oh. Is it warm?"
>Nephele takes a deep, steady breath and manages to collect herself. Her voice is a little hoarse when she next speaks. "It is warm. And you don't have to be sorry. I know this is all... strange."
>"Well that's good right? It means she's still out there. Let's keep going. The sun may have stopped but time seems to be passing."
>"Right."
>Ethwyn nods. "Let's get this over with... I'm tired of whatever this is messing with my family..."

>The woods ahead look darker -denser than ever before... Or is that just a trick of the light?
- - -
>The girls continue picking through the trees. The forest has started to become more and more overgrown as they go, though it's still not so dense as to seriously impede their progress.
>It's still completely silent.
>They come to a huge, old oak tree. The kind with branches that spread out everywhere. In its bark a ladder has been carved and within its grip sits an old, dilapidated treehouse.
>Beyond this point, the forest is so dark and dense it's hard to believe it's supposed to be daylight.
>Shirley gawks up at the treehouse. "Was this always here? Wait. How come I've never been here? Or have I just forgotten? It looks like it's been here for decades."
>Ethwyn mimics Shirley, in a subdued way. "Well this is new... probably."
>Nephele's jaw clenches. "Mars used to like coming out here. It's been so long... I'd forgotten about it."
>Yes. It was definitely time that caused you to forget. Absolutely.

>"Should we check it out then?" Ethwyn asks.
>"I'm going up." And then Shirley plants a foot on a rung. Then a hand. Then starts climbing.
>Ethwyn reaches up and grips the back of Shirley's shirt. "Hang on... I just saw something in the window..."

>Nephele pauses in her climb. "It is a memory." She cranes her neck around to look out at the trees. "Mars and I would spend so much time up here. She loved it out here, but she hated the climb." She giggles a little at the thought. And then she looks serious again. "I'm surprised you two could hear it too, though..."
>Shirley starts the process of wiggling through the floor access of the treehouse. "I got to experience her vertigo. It was, umm, wow if she did that every time then she's got a strong stomach."
[38/?]
>>
>>76328170 what is happening here? Why are they all experiencing Nepheley's memory?
>>
>>76328296
Frankly, I don't know. And it's difficult to speculate without flying off into spoiler territory. But two things worth mentioning I guess are that it's a normal memory and not a Memory Fragment. It's just something that's happened in the past.
Second is... kind of spoilery but not really? I guess I'll spoil it just in case, but if you've paid attention to Nephele's dialogue it shouldn't be. The player characters aren't in a physical space right now. They're in a projection or a sim or something, so the boundaries of reality are kind of mutable at the moment.

>The treehouse is clearly old, but sturdy. A bench is built into the wall next to an ad hoc shelf. Resting on a box beneath the windowsill is a black leather-bound book.
>"Neffi did you keep a black leather book? Or does this belong to Mars?" Shirley climbs the rest of the way in and scrambles over on all fours but stops short of disturbing the book. "Or Teppe, but why would she leave it up here? Oh, duh. The view." She plops down on her butt and looks out the window while she waits for the others.
>"It's Teppe's..." Nephele stares at it for a moment, before walking over and picking it up. "But... I never brought Teppe out here."
>"She was really defensive about her diary, so leaving it somewhere that others could find it is a bit... odd." Ethwyn observes as she climbs her way into the treehouse.
>Nephele pauses, and after a moment's hesitation begins to leaf through the pages.
>Most of the pages are too waterlogged to read.
>"Where did Laus go? Where are Mr. and Mrs. Clay?"
>"Everyone's disappearing and Nephele won't listen."
>"She just keeps saying 'They aren't here this summer...'"
>"...but the way her face looks, I'm not sure she believes that."
>"Laus... Laus, I'm scared."

>Nephele slumps. "She was looking for Laus. It looks like I scared her, too." She hands the book off the Ethwyn. "I can't make out most of the pages. The book's gotten wet at some point."
>Ethwyn frowns, accepting the book and starting to look it over.
>"...A lot of pages have been removed. And I don't mean just torn out, it's almost as if they were never there in the first place, that's how cleanly they were taken out."
>"The book is warm though, just like the other stuff."
>"The VGH doesn't want us to know, or doesn't want her to remember?" Shirley speculates. "Can I see?" she holds a hand out to Ethwyn.
>Ethwyn hands the book over to Shirley, not seeing the harm.
[39/?]
>>
>>76328481
>Shirley runs her hands over the book, and carefully looks through the pages and examines its structure. Then smells it, and holds it to her chest.
>"Hang on Teppe. Were coming. Okay?"
>She exhales and gives the book back to Ethylwn. "Let's go."
>"Something might be trying to remove it. Laus' card kept dissolving into ash in my hands when I picked it up. Or I saw that it was." Nephele sighs with frustration as she takes her first step down the ladder. "It'll be hard to say until we can get to the bottom of everything. Let's go."
>"Yeah." Shirley nods. "All for one and one for all."
>Ethwyn nods softly. "Sounds good."
>"Say it with me." Shirley insists as she starts down the ladder after Nephele. "All for one and one for all!"
>Ethwyn peers down the ladder after them. "Autobots, roll out! ...Since you've decided we are doing references."
>Nephele's eyes roll hard enough to shake the earth. "Uuugh. You are both -such dorks.-"

And to -actually- be concluded tomorrow. Hopefully tomorrow morning.

>The girls continue deeper into the forest. The trees grow more and more dense until they can hardly move forward.
>And then they're upon a chainlink fence.
>Beyond the fence is flat, featureless asphalt and empty, blue sky for as far as the eye can see.
>Sections in the chain link fence have been torn outward with considerable force.
>Wisps of light float through the sky, joined by shadowy, fragmented silhouettes along the ground.
>Mars' ax is laying in the grass at the edge of the world.
>A figure that looks just like Nephele is approaching them.
+TURN BACK AND DESIST. RESET.
>Walls of flame spring up all around the Dolls. The forest is ablaze.
=== COMBAT: START! ===
>The fight starts off in a four-person-brawl between Nephele, Ethwyn, and the two nearby fragmented silhouettes.
>Nephele's rocket arms are making decent work of disrupting the silhouettes, but Ethwyn's efforts are frustrated by interference from the wisps, which are disrupting their attacks.
>Shirley hangs back with her bow and drills holes into the opposition, switching focus to the wisps when it becomes clear they're hampering Nephele and Ethwyn
>The Not!Nephele in the far back of the hostile formation continues the mimicry, striking out at Ethwyn and Nephele with a bare mimicry of Nephele's rocket arms.
>Nephele and Ethwyn gang up on one of the silhouettes in particular, pummeling it down before it can do much harm.
>Before they can swap to the second it's wrenched apart, as if it were shredded by an invisible set of giant, frantic claws.
>Nephele and Ethwyn wade forward through the walls of flame, smashing the wisps as they move toward the Fake Nephele.
>The fire should hamper the Dolls more than it is. Their steps are urged on by... something. Their footfalls are farther apart, surer, faster than they should be.
>There isn't time to ponder in the heat of the moment.
[40/?]
>>
>>76331992
>Nephele stops short of engaging her doppelganger, opting to engage with her rocket arms at range.
>Ethwyn closes in and starts to batter the doppelganger with her bat, just laying into the apparition.
>The fires grow higher. The remaining wisps are scattering sparks to the wind, feeding them more and more and more.
>Shirley starts targeting the wisps one by one in an effort to control the fire; the flames have cut off her advance and she's having trouble moving up to join Nephele and Ethwyn.
>Something lashes out from the Fake Nephele. A flicker, flash of distorted color and light.
>Nephele's arms are attached at her elbows again. Her elbows have been replaced with traditional ball-joints and the thrusters that used to be there simply no longer are.
+Nephele is no longer an Administrator.
>There's a glint of metal in the air.
>Mars' ax spirals through the sky, slamming into the doppelganger's side and shearing off a massive chunk of out her midsection.
>Nephele moves forward, joining Ethwyn in laying into the doppelganger with her metal fists.
>Shirley has mopped up the wisps and is attempting to move forward now. The roaring fire nearest her is blocking her path.
>In an instinctive movement she puts her hand out and-
>Makes contact?
>The form of the fire is not just hot. It's solid.
>She shoves, hard.
>Her undead strength sends the entity cascading backward, and clearing her path, allowing her to move closer.
>"Mars, Laus, Teppe. We're coming, we're coming! We'll get you out!"
>Her steps are urged on by something unseen, just like Nephele's and Ethwyn's. She moves so quickly and so surely the flames cannot stop her.
>Ethwyn slams the Nephele's copy over the head with her bat and-
>The apparition sheds its disguise.
>It's not Nephele anymore. It's just a human silhouette of nothing, lashing out at them.
>There's an undercurrent over the desolate battlefield.

>Something horrible, fit to unseat the Dolls' very egos as it washes over their being.
>Nephele can feel it in her mind. It's fit to unseat her sanity but-
>There's a set of four arms, wrapped around her protectively. Shielding her from the scream.
>An arrow pierces the flames and pierces the apparition.
>Combat devolves into a brawl.
>Ethwyn savaging the apparition with her bat while Shirley takes shots of opportunity and Nephele sneaks in a desperate strike of her own wherever she can.
>The flames are roaring.
>The apparition flares and lashes out in all directions
>The flames are climbing.
>Ethwyn is burning.
>Shirley is shouting something Nephele is too far gone to hear.
>It's there!
>Now!

>Nephele lunges forward with a frantic right hook.
>Her fist passes through the apparition's head.
>Suddenly the world is only gray, charcoal black, and sky blue.
>Her ears ring in the dearth of noise. The fire is gone. The apparition is gone.
>The nothingness that was the apparition scatters, stops, begins to glow.
>It begins to coalesce into a ball in Nephele's outstretched hand.
+Administrator privileges have been restored.

>You feel as if someone is placing their hand on your shoulder. That someone is hugging you. That someone is holding your hand.

+Free them? . . . Y/N

>Nephele's face is conflicted. Pained. She takes a deep breath, and smiles at her sisters.
>Shirley is running up to give Nephele and Ethwyn a hug.
>Shirley wraps an arm about Ethwyn's shoulder as she leans against her bat as if it were a walking stick
>As she reaches for Nephele...

>Nephele's smile turns bittersweet. "I love you both... please be safe." She says... and Shirley's hand bursts into light before it can reach her, followed swiftly by the rest of her, and Ethwyn, and even Eiffel.
>Before Shirley knows it, she opens her eyes to the interior of the dirtiest plexiglass window she's ever seen, which promptly pops open and slides away.
>Her and Ethwyn can clearly see each other in recently opened pods across from one another. There are three more, which remain shut. Only three more.
>In the center of the room is a massive pillar lined in cables. Along its side, a light blinks adjacent to a computer terminal.
>The world is disappearing around her.
>Nephele turns walks back through the woods, enjoying the sunshine.
>The treehouse is crumbling away, board by board as she passes
>The firepit scattered to the wind
>The leaves are falling
>The grass is wilting.
>The old barn collapses in her wake
>She climbs up onto the roof of the family home to watch the sun set over the trees one last time.

>Ethwyn climbs out of the pod and hurries over to the terminal to check it out.
>Shirley leans up, and falls over the front of her tube. Scrambling on all fours she shoots across the room and gets up on two legs only to trip and falls into Ethelwyn's back, latching on she buries her face in her sisters shoulder and sniffs back tears.
>There is a rapidly updating text readout on the terminal.

>"What's happening Sis?" Shirley asks still blind to the events ahead as she nuzzles Ethylwyn's back.
>The screen is filled with nonsense.
>The pod on their right slides open.
>A small girl in a red shirt falls out.
>The ground. Ground. It's cold. You feel cold. Everything is sluggish and unresponsive.
>Shirley whips around. "Mars!" She sprints over and slides down to her knees by the girl in red and reaches out for her. "Don'tBeDeadDon'tBeDeadPleaseBeUndeadPleaseBeUndead."
>Ethwyn closes her eyes, and presses her forehead to the screen as her fists clench. "This isn't fair..."
>Mars' eyes open blearily, blinking off the mental cobwebs of long-term stasis.
>As her vision clears and she sees Shirley's face she is... aghast.
>Her voice is a hoarse, unbelieving whisper. "Shirley . . . ?"
>"Yes. It's me. You remember my name." She leans in and envelops the red girl in a hug.
>"Do you remember your name?" Shirley whispers quietly
>"I- I do." Mars is suddenly wracked by a hacking cough. She swivels her head this way and that as she recovers, clearly bewildered. "But what's going on? What are- what are you two... where are we?" She blinks. "Why are you both so much taller?"
>It's Shirley's turn to look bewildered. "I'm taller? Maybe you're shorter."
>Ethwyn pauses, looking over to Mars. "...What is your name? Just... to make sure."
>Shirley scoops the red girl up "Upsidaisy." She starts carrying her over to Etheyn and the terminal.
>"I- I'm- WUAOH!" Mars' eyes go wide as Shirley lifts her up, and wider just as soon as she gets a view of her own feet in Shirley's princess carry. "I- I- I-"

>"You were... downloaded into Mars body, I guess." Ethwyn sighs, turning to Nephele with a sad smile. "I guess she had a last gift for you..."
>The terminal sparks violently.
>"NO!" Shirley breaks into a sprint. though its clear she doesn't have a direction. "Circuit breaker, main power, or something, quick shut it off before it ruins itself!" She says at a frantic pace as she sprints with Neffi in her arms.
>The sparks arc out and nearly strike Shirley, and then it bursts into flames as arcs of electricity begin racing along every cable in the room.
>Ethwyn grabs onto Shirley's shoulder and tries to usher her to the door. "Shirley. I don't... I don't think there's anything we could have done. Mars, Teppe, Laus... they were already gone... and this system, whatever it is, was already breaking down. We need to go, Shirley."
>Tears well up in Nephele's new eyes.
>"We- I went to the roof of the old farmhouse to watch the sun set for the last time. Everything was falling apart."
>"Laus and Teppe and Mars. They were all there with me. They- they were hugging me and they- they said that they loved me too. And that's the last I remember."

>Something beside one of the pods explodes
>Shirley screams in fright at the explosion
>Ethwyn shoves Shirley toward the door and takes a step back into the room. "Shirley, no! The fire is spreading, I need you to get out, now! If it's that important to you then I'll stay behind to get their bodies, but you and Nephele have to get out!"
>Ethwyn's ultimatum seems to shake something in Shirley. "Ok, ok, ok! No, your right. We need to go now Sis. I'm sorry. Let's Go!" and she's off, pushing Ethwyn ahead of her
>They come out into a network of tunnels and sealed doors that open as they pass.
>At least until, with one final 'FWOOSH' of air, the flickering lights finally die and they're left in total darkness.
>Fortunately, they can see fairly well in the dark given some time to adjust, and manage to navigate to the manual release on the doors so they can still proceed.
>Their belongings and equipment remain with them (though Nephele only has Mars' things, ofc... though she also - implausibly - has Teppe's diary and Laus' baseball card.
>Some exploration reveals other stasis chambers similar to yours... which are all completely dead, bereft of life and power.
>Eventually, they find the exit and a harsh sun blinds them, before they find themselves standing amidst a sea of tall, yellowed grass that goes on as far as the eye can see.
>Shirley pats Nephele on the shoulder. "Welcome to Earth: Meatspace Edition Neffi. I hope you have a good time here."

[49/49] - End

Hope you lads enjoyed the storytime.
Sorry for all the delays.
>>
How does a dismember check work against horrors and legions, do they do nothing or Instant kill because both sound rather crap for the core combatants.
>>
>>76333386
Dismember and Explosive attacks automatically deal double damage to Horrors and Legions instead of calling for a dismember check/bouncing to a separate hit location.

Area attacks also deal double damage to Legions.

These effects stack, so if you hit a legion with an Explosive + Area attack, for example, the damage will be doubled twice.
>>
>>76249039
How were those commands Nephele used made?

Did you clean up and make spiffy their formatting when making the storytime?

>>76246568
What were the hogs for?
>>
>>76333180
So how much did Nephele's player know going in?
>>
>>76333456
How would you make a combat against saants trying to Shepard and protect a herd of zombies the dolls want to destroy interesting from a mechanical perspective?

Usually legions are cannon fodder but here you have savants and possibly horrors trying to protect the legions and keep them moving.

>I should build a character around Pilebunker some day.

One Punch Doll?
>>
>>76333661
>spoilers
The GM had some prepared for combat, but a bit after the lightning struck the barn I started experimenting with what he would let me get away with.
The reset commands were baked into the list beforehand and Nephele had to make a madness check every time she used them because it was something she really didn't like doing.

The commands were all copy-pasted as I typed them, or as the DM typed them when the ghosts/false actor was doing stuff, with some minor formatting changes to make who is actually inputting it easier to tell. Anything with ??? in front is from someone other than Nephele.

The hogs were spawned in case the girls insisted on driving into town. They would halt the truck and force them to remain on the property.

>>76335142
I went in knowing everything except the fates of the unplayed dolls, or that Nephele exiting the simulation was a possibility. She/I made the choice to let the other dolls out with full knowledge that it would be a Bad End for her. There was also the possibility that I would have played the boss encounter, being the one to keep them from leaving but things didn't shape up that way.

>>76337403
I guess part of the design would come from why the party is fighting them. Blowing up a bunch of Legions is pretty boring, but the objective might be to keep them from crossing the map into Eden and then exiting the battlefield rather than just exterminating them, which puts the party on a time crunch.

Parts that negate area would be a good one, maybe something that mimics Protect so they can impose themselves between the party and the Legions.

Maybe in lieu of having a really complicated Savant you have a varied gaggle of Legions to mess with the party. My GM had one encounter where the Legions couldn't attack, but they could chain-move depending on the size of the stack and take a player character with them. It made for a very disorienting fight.
>>
>>76340199
>they could chain-move depending on the size of the stack and take a player character with them. It made for a very disorienting fight.

How does that work? Was the chain move low AP so they were constantly trying to drag you back up or down the map?
>>
>>76341728
Instead of chain attacking once for every stack of 10, they could chain move for every stack of 10, and when they chose to use that maneuver they could take another character with them. So they would spend AP to move and then start chain moving, bringing enemies forward and party members back, and all that sort of thing. It was probably the most mechanically interesting fight of the campaign.

>"I want to go home. I want to have a home to go to." Nephele sobs.

I forgot about the Ghosts tokens being put around Nephele when she was in the yard in the snow. Actually now that I think about it. How much was she actually feeling then?
At the time I hadn't realized much lying and acting she was doing. The mention of Nephele having feelings to get used to once she was in meatapace in Mars' body made me think back on that scene in the snow. How much was feeling and how much was acting for the purposes of keeping us with her and/or safe?
>>
>>76342653
Nephele's emotions were always genuine but her body was basically an avatar. She had an overreaching awareness of the property and could detect/see anything that wasn't specifically hidden from her, as well as manipulate anything within her permissions. She's a caretaker AI who's spontaneously gained sapience. Being in Mars' body, she's experiencing having chemical feedback from a flesh and blood brain for the first time, so instead of directing her body to respond to how she's feeling, it's just automatically happening before she can process anything.

The only times she ever acted with false emotion was when she was trying to steer the other two away from what she thought was danger. Once the jig was up it was pretty much 100% genuine, except to hide how scared she was of being left behind.
