So I actually really like myconids. Does anyone have some cool artwork of mushroom men and fungus fellows that you can share?

I’ll post some of the ones I’ve found.

Myconids are the best original D&D race, because they were the first attempt at something with a truly alien mindset. They think nothing of taking your corpse and growing baby myconids from it, but they're not evil, they're neutral. Not neutral in the sense of keeping the balance, but neutral in the sense that good and evil don't apply. Lizardmen were neutral too, but lizardmen were still overtly hostile and wanted to eat you.

I thought that looked familiar!

Yeah I had actually never encountered them at all for many years and I was really impressed once I’d learned about them.

Part of the idea behind the art being gathered here is to try to construct a myconid player character - which is a lot harder than it might initially seem, based on their alien culture.

I like to emphasise the Mycelial nature of the Myconids.
The face might be a Flowering bulb, IE a mushroom, but the creature itself is a mycelial network, that eats the bodies of dead things so it can wrap itself around the skeleton and use itself as the muscles for locomotion.
It feels kinda dark, but only in an uncomfortable circle-of-life kind of way. Plus, it seems less goofy to me then just a bunch of walking mushrooms.
>>
>>77349142
OH GOD

It does initially seem disturbing, but it makes a lot of sense. And it gives them a very unique look.

I’m growing mushrooms myself currently, and they’re fascinating

Thanks. n all fairness, i wasn't picturing a human-sized myconid- although i've just realised the implication is a great idea for a myconid villain- I was picturing them, er, "borrowing" the stuff they just find lying around in the underdark. So mostly rats, maybe the odd Kobold or deep gnome that was already in the ground heh when they found it.
>>
>>77349517
Mmm, that is a neat idea.

Additional quest hook idea: locals report sightings of undead and hearing terrifying noises in the local catacombs. It turns out that myconids have “repurposed” the hundreds of corpses entombed there. The myconids may not want any trouble, but the terrified and disgusted family members of the deceased certainly do.

>You can feel the other "body" being restructured to accomodate you

And that's where sovereigns come from.
>>

Maybe the host is in agonizing pain at all times but isn’t in control of his body anymore. Maybe he used to be a paladin before he was taken over by the Myconid. Maybe the myconid itself isn’t evil but doesn’t understand (or care about) human morals. Maybe he’s now part of an evil party, and the paladin is now forced to watch helplessly as his body is used to commit atrocities.

>Mycelial parasites function by overriding the host's movement and instincts

>They're more mycelium now than man

This is a darkly hilarious idea. Evolutionarily it makes perfect sense: the fungi wants to spread as far as it can, right? And so subconsciously forcing a humanoid to go adventuring would be a great way to do this. After all, myconids love subterranean dwellings, like dungeons for instance.

It starts out as a slight urge, but developed into a need for adventure. In its latest stages, the host can think only of adventuring, and he pursues it with manic obsession.

No collecting treasure. No eating. No sleeping. ONLY ADVENTURING.

In our own world, this sort of thing already cappers with cordyceps fungus, which will force an insect to climb to a high branch, or gorge itself on food, etc.

Yeah, in the same way that it could find, say, a chair, or a table. Just because it can detect that SOMETHING is there doesn't mean it's something it has an interest in. It's only interested in living things, and living things tend to move.

In principle, yeah! Exactly like that.
In execution, though, quite a bit less grimdark. Like, ditch the skull, more mycelium over the bones, and more pale/ warm earthy colours.
Basically it's more of an uncanny valley kinda feel; they're humanoid enough that you can relate to them, get to know them, come to appreciate their society; they're still the warm, welcoming, enlightened mushroom men of the base lore, after all. It's just... something about the way they walk. The way their body is structured. It's like they're... hiding something...

Finally answering the question of what a myconid’s animal companion would look like.
>>
I'm liking both of these ideas. Maybe two Myconid subraces? Neither are really good or evil, it's just the way they propagate.
The first kind are those that grow over the dead. They're not really harming anyone, & they're really quite chill dudes usually, so people are generally OK with looking past the skeleton in their closet. As long as they didn't personally know the skeleton in question.

The other kind are the kind that grow into the living. Maybe they're an offshoot bred by the drow for torture or slave control purposes that got seriously out of hand. Maybe they're the original Myconids, sent to do the bidding of Zuggtmoy, & the Hippies who don't eat living creatures are the splitters. Either way, this kind is considerably more... chaotic, then the other. They start off as an infection in a host, and as they grow, they rely on the host's own mind to form theirs. Eventually the host is eaten away, but their mentality, their thoughts, emotions and gradual insanity, is left behind... as the personality of the Myconid. And as they require conjoining with each other to breed and grow, they tend to combine such personalities, over time... the oldest of these Myconids can be very large, very powerful, and almost completely insane.

>>77351117
I wrote the thing these are from. Neat. They kinda work a bit like this dude's idea >>77349142 >>77351653 . Their focus is more on the parasitic side of it though, they're not just claiming animals as host bodies but also integrating into the settlements of other cultures to be social parasites too. The art isn't super representative of them though, although it is gorgeous. The average saprophican is way more human looking, because the more human you look the less likely you'll have your head chopped off and your body burned by humans, it's only the rare saprophican that ends up looking that gross. They also all have some sort of fungal adornment to beautify them, anything pretty you've ever seen a fungus do is something they can do to make themselves more appealing. That sort of stuff helps with integration into human villages. Their end goal is the end goal of all things, propagation. They set out to find new locations for their colonies and push the settlements they integrate into to that end. The establishment of a new colony does involve their death though and they give themselves up to kickstart that whole process. They've got some other stuff going on too, a mysterious religion, some strict laws about converting sapients, and their lifecycle being as grotesque as it is leads them to being very secretive and protective of their colonies.
>>
>>77351904
Good storyline possibilities for both varieties as well.

For instance, the first type might not be actively hostile, but in places with very large numbers of corpses, their numbers can rapidly get out of hand. Catacombs are an obvious first choice, but you could also see myconid outbreaks on former battlefields, mass graves, following natural disasters, etc. Anything where lots of corpses are left together.

The second variety could see a player character get infected, or maybe some noble looking for a cure. It might even develop into a terrifying epidemic.

There are a lot of good ideas in this thread but this is one of my favorites:

Some very isolated village where the culture is entirely mushroom-related. Houses in the shape of mushrooms. Mushrooms making up much of their diet. Stuff like that. And their religion is very concrete- they believe in an afterlife because they can literally see it. They bury their family in nearby myconid caves, and their relatives’ corpse literally appear to be resurrected. Maybe on a holiday once a year they get to go down there and commune with the myconids, not realizing that they are actually entirely different entities that are just using the corpses as a host.

So I’ve been thinking about some unique properties of different species of fungi, which could be potentially incorporated into different varieties of myconids. Some of these have already been touched upon in the official books, such as bioluminescence, poison, and hallucinogenic properties. But a few other ones I thought of are:

>The Artist’s Conk mushroom will permanently darken if it is cut into. This can be used for something similar to tattooing on a myconid
>Hoof fungus is extremely flammable slow burning tinder. Maybe a myconid could have a special ability that lights his fists on fire
>Some fungi produce antibiotics like penicillium, which might transfer into an ability to cure illness
>Yeast are utilized in brewing alcohol, and at high concentrations alcohol is flammable or even explosive, maybe there’s something we could do with that?
>A number of irritating diseases are caused by fungus, so maybe the ability to inflict rashes on enemies or something?

Any other ideas?
>>
>>77369646
These sound great for flavour. I could definitely see the penicilium thing being a subrace trait, too. Once a day able to heal 1dx worth of damage during a short rest, that kind of thing.

I like the thought of Myconid adventurers being just a part of the overall life cycle, or just one subtype of myconid.
Maybe there's more Myconids that are considerably more monstrous, then the humanoid ones that you can use for PCs. Like Pic related. Very different to our eyes, but to a myconid, they might come from the same spore release & look at each other like brothers.

> Symbiotic myconids can be grafted to desperate medical cases to live again, albeit a bit changed.
> Resolute warriors fighting a terrible invader infect themselves with spores before marching to certain death, so that their inevitable end can grow more defenders.
> The corrupting magic of undeath that plague the lands can raise corpses into an army of evil, unless the profusion of life that are the myconids get there first.
>>
>>77373830
Maybe myconids grow into different beings depending on the soil they originally grew on? Myconids growing on plants are "just" shrooms, but myconids growing on corpses keep something of its host. An imprint, some may call it a soul, shaping the growing myconids. They would be entirely defined by their environment. Growing on an animal make a beast myconid, keeping some of its instincts, but growing on a sapient being has deeper consequences. An imprint of the deceased that can shape the myconid mind. There is no deception though: all of it is true to him through and through. What look like a parody mimicking the lost is his very being to him.
You could add some animism to it, or beliefs of reincarnation or on the contrary beliefs that they prevent the soul to truly pass on.

My party will meet a small myconid soon as they walk through a heavy forest area. It'll be inquisitive, nonthreatening, and potentially even helpful. At some point I want the myconid to turn on them, reveal itself to be a spiteful forest spirit, but I'm not sure how best to go about that. What should it look like, what should it do, etc. Motivation is probably just "the forest doesn't want you here" with a dash of "you will be fertilizer for my mycelium"

What gods would mushrooms even revere?

>That took quite a grim turn, no symbiotic myconid?
yeah not a fan of the grimdark mushroom men. It's been done to death in every other mushroom setting, especially since Last of Us. It's much more interesting to have friendly/neutral myconids.

What if the myconid lives symbiotically with the human in the way algae lives symbiotically on sloths? The man is old and stooped but always makes sure to keep his worn overcoat nice and damp for his mushroom pal Gerald

>It starts out as a slight urge, but developed into a need for adventure. In its latest stages, the host can think only of adventuring, and he pursues it with manic obsession.
Twist that on its head: Mushrooms grow in the dark, damp, and still places, right?

>Adventurer gets infected by mycelial parasite
>Host simply will not stop adventuring, constantly getting into bar fights or tackling dragons or sailing the seven seas
>The myconid is tired of waiting for this guy to settle down and just wants OFF
>Fungus has to bargain with the party to remove himself from their adventuring buddy so he can just fruit in peace

That's a zombee though. Another awesome concept, but not a myconid

Got any shots of it painted? I'm assuming that's supposed to be a Soverign but I'm unsure of scale. Or why you'd buy it, frankly, given how rarely mycenoids pop up

Actually not a zombie, a living host to insect swarms caused by a space fungus that messes with DNA in pregnant women

What about their civilisation?
Do myconids build, forge, trade and so on?

Cute

they decompose, myceliate, and cycle nutrients and resources
>>
Hey guys something just occurred to me, Myconids, that get their nutrition from decomposing dead and waste material would find cites a smorgasbord, think about the amount of household waste from leftover foods rotten goods tattered clothing ext for them to break down and absorb nutrients from.

>The corrupting magic of undeath that plague the lands can raise corpses into an army of evil, unless the profusion of life that are the myconids get there first.
Think about living in a world where on your deathbed your family/companions have a responsibility to ensure you get infested by mushrooms to ensure the necromancers don't raise you up.

Something like this, then?
VERY rough first draft. Took the idea of a Myconid growing over the body of a dead rat like >>77349517 Suggested. But, being Mycelial mushroom men, i kind of figured they'd pick & choose what parts they needed. Like, the forearm bones would DEFINITELY be out; they need the legs to stay stable, but the forearms are just extra weight that restricts the movement of the mycelium.
I figured they'd feel the same way about the skull, but now i'm not so sure; it's at the top of the Myconid, and bulky enough that they could use it as a sort of flowering platform.

This reminds me of a disease I've used once or twice as a plotpoint.
The swordsman's plague. Symptoms include coughing up blood, a proclivity to swordplay, and an overwhelming desire to find the cure.
