This is a crowd sourced endeavor to create a setting and rpg.

What was produced is pic related, the setting of LEVIATHAN (the name is a work in progress), the World of Sacred Oil and Broken Stone. The purpose of this thread is to organize to continue filling out the Lore Document, congregate for map making, and for developing an RPG system for this setting.

The story of the world is emergent, being developed as we discuss and explore the Compass. The Docs provides most in-depth explanations of most items, but the main conflicts of the setting are as follows:
> The Lapsarians have a secret Bargain with the Ocean Gods for Oil: A fuel source, the heart of the recent industrialization, and food-item which provides boons to those who consume it, though at a cost
> The Durite people who are colonized by the Lapsarians are revolting, drawing from both traditional and newfound powers to fight back against their oppressors
> The remnants of old Lapsarian Rebellions, such as the Last Captain and his crew, still haunt the waters where they were defeated, a sacrifice as part of the Bargain
> New powers, like the Industrialists and the Tycoons, fight for dominance in the cities, opposing both each other and other groups (such as the mysterious Hooks) in an ever escalating conflict
> All the while and above all human struggles, the Monolith and the Sea Gods exert their influence, their goals (if any) unknowable

Considering they're nomadic, as far as they can roam, since borders are a thing for sedentary people. Lapsarian Occupied Durit though, I'd say is pretty big, ranging from 1/3 to 2/3 Lapsaria excluding these Domains. So not Bigger than them, but still a major aquisition of land.

So before my Internet got shat out. I had some ideas to differentiate Goguryeo...

>The Goryu hat is marked with stone bands to display social caste, lower castes aren't even allowed to have a hat. This hat is shaped around the top, and is closer to a Fez to allow easy inspection.
> The brow, and mustache share this trait, with specific cuts being styled for clans. Only members of the royal household are allowed to grow beards as that is where the royal cord rests.
> Clothes are traditionally black, but are generally laced with metals, typically bronze which is abundant on Goguryeo
> Like the Durits they have naturally grey skin, but will often utilize face paints for sharper colours.
> Particularly extreme members of society fuse crafted stone parts to themselves, particularly on the teeth and cheekbones, making them resemble 'tusked demons' according to Masovii rumours.
> Many beasts of burden in Goguryeo are insects, and armour is as often made of chitin as metals, especially among the lower classes.
> The Mantis and the Stag Beetle are the patron Animals of Goguryeo, with the first dynasty believed to be a union from the Stag Emperor and the Mantis Queen.
> Motifs of bother creatures are common place in fashion, and the claw-blade and horn-hammer are the traditional weapons of the nobility, while spears are omnipresent elsewhere in society.

I like this. Push Jasentorf towards the empty patch of landwest of the wastes (It's a nation with sizable Stone worship, they should be nearer to the Vast), and gives us a good place to start thinking of Ververia

>>82147184
I was thinking something along these lines. The Hassym being an near puppet state to Lapsaria would place them somewhat next to them, and I quite like the way the Sligaffi fit in that basin
>>
>>82146907
I don't think tthat's been fully settled. At least in the docs it's ambiguous/allows for both.

>>82147203
This would make Jesentrof essentially tropical, which might be a problem. I don't really get 'full of jungles' vibe from them. I think Sligaffi being on the equator makes sense, but I'll move Hasyym. We should put someone in its place.

I think this is really good. Only change I'd make would be push tthe whole continent up one bit, so we have more of jesentorn in non-tropical regions north of the equator
>>

I do hope all this geography debate continues to be constructive, the maps look better and better with each iteration but while that debate rages on I’d like to get some discussion going about one of the thread topics:

>Laprasi city life

I think we’ve all generally agreed the general vibe we’re going for is a mix of British early industrialism and German/HRE imperialism.

With these assumptions in mind then can we assume most every man woman and child work to at least some degree in the cities. Even the woman peasants who raise their children have side gigs like cloth making or other hand made goods.

Children are of course being abused left and right in the factories being gophers and fixing factory machinery in cramped spaces a grown man can’t reach.

Education is a joke for the peasant families, only noble children in fancy boarding schools get to really know much of the world, and of course through the lens of Noble and Deacon approved material.

I really like this map, I think this is close to what we can all agree on without making major compromises. The small Masovi coastal region should have a big port city that has exchanged hands numerous times in masovis struggle to maintain a warm water port.

This is looking really great!
>>
>>82147768
Who and who?
>>
>>82147784
Nope. But I'll reach back to the old thread for them.

>Principality of Freeskalön
>Nightmarish little shithole nestled on the border between [Jasentorf and Lapsaria], nominally granted independence eight centuries prior and neither the Tsardom, nor the States want to deal with them
>95% of the country is swamp with only a single central plateau useful for non-kelp farming. Mostly occupied by long out-dated fortifications
>While the 'Order of the Great Cow' is technically the only religious hierarchy and seems Fish, it isn't and seems to be completely neutral in comparison to the Lapsarian and Jasntorf Coastals
>The 'Great Cow' of Freeskalön is the oldest of the Sea-Cows, strange breathing creatures that are kept by the Freeskals like herd animals, and the Great Cow is now so large the Order's Elders live on its back
>While most Sea Cows are herbivores, the Freeskals feed the Great Cow human sacrifices
>Freeskals when trading are agreeable people and export Sea-Cow Milk, Willow-Furniture and nominal amounts of 'sea-stone' to their neighbors, which is actually jsut a hardened kelp chunk
>When not trading, the Freeskals are introverted, and if threatened are terrors when the swamp begins speaking Freeskal
>>
>>82147813
>Sallow State of Sudawas
>The Minor principality locked on a nebulous border between [Masovii Lands and the Lapsarian Frontier,] dominated by a forest of the 'Red Titans'
>Red Titans are enormous Sequoia like trees that while they seem to be made of stone grow like wood, and while the Sudawii aren't religious they're ferociously protective of the forest and their homeland
>Sudawii people are moss farmers, living off of pigs, chickens, and moss that grows one the sides of the Titans, the moss giving their skin an odd dark red colour that fades without the moss
>The Sallow State is governed by a council of elders, who are notorious for being easy to bribe in minor matters, allowing frontiersmen to freely pass through Sudawas and establish several minor townships
>Dead Sudawii are ground into powder and buried outside the forest, and eventually these graveyards will sprout new Red Titans
>>
>>82147828
I'll also nab up the other suggested nations.

>The Kingdom of Guthall
>An distant Nation far from Lapsaria, in ancient days the Guths raided and settled on Lapsarian shores, and was the center of a vast Empire
>This Empire was devoted to the 'Old Olm', a nebulous creature that lived under the island of Guthall and called for immense tribute the Guths struggled to supply
>At some point this empire collapsed when the Olm vanished, and Guthall shrank away, their settlers eventually integrating into their new homelands
>Recently, rumours have arrived that a 'Singing Olm' now inhabits the darkness of Guthall, a stranger creature than the Old Olm that makes those historically minded nervous
>Guthall has long supplied sail-ships of great size and strength to the world, but recently the introduction of Lapsarian Ironclads have devastated their industries
>Olm Hounds are common pets on Guthall, though they are rarely ever seen off-island

>The Ashen Order
>Religious Order of crazed Yothenstein monks who moved onto an actively growing volcano island
>Generally insular, because no one wants to meet a bunch of monks snorting volcanic ash and enduring the magma flows
>Have been sending out perfect obsidian bricks recently, maybe they're doing something productive?
>The Stone Wails Here
>The Nubile Stone is Perfection Made Manifest
>What Works Will Be
>>
>>82147813
>>82147828
I like both of these, they're interesting enough to go onto the chart. They just need something drawn for them.
>>
>>82147846
>The Sunken Land Khalat
>[Located on the opposite side of Jasentorf to Lapsaria], Khalat was once a peninsula on which a powerful kingdom grew and thrived
>This was back in the iron age, when Khalat and Jasentorf were the worst of rivals, and the Kings of Khalat recieved tribute from all places their boats reached
>Except that place with the creepy worm thing
>For thirty Kings of the Pink-Salt lineage, the Khalats held what might have been the greatest strength in all the World
>No one knows why, but after the death of the thirtieth King, the sea swallowed up all of Khalat, and the stone idols of the Kingdom watched
>In these days, several princes claim the wet isles as their own, but no one really controls it, aside the remaining natives
>The Khalati sing of pale salt and a sacrifice abandoned, and wait for when the day when the waters forgive them and allow them to reclaim their strength

>The Mountain of Birk
>Why is this mountain so big?
>Why are there so many esoteric orders and lakes and lakes on this mountain?
>Jesus that's a lot of lakes.
>The Birkers just sort of got used to Stone Monks and Hooks murdering each other on the Slops
>This Algae isn't gonna farm itself after all
>The Birkers have formed a weird anarchist collective situation, and no one is around to stop them
>That guy who just showed up with mining equipment might change that

Have we established what the Laprasian's are building with all this industrialization? To my knowledge it's Weapons, Airships, ironside ships, horseless carriages, and diving equipment so far. Surely there's general goods being made as well like textiles, tools, cement (which may or may not be infused with dust), new types of farm equipment, paper making which of course has lead the invention of newspapers and a demand for literacy education, and of course glass production, can't phase out those Yechod Glassblowers without that.
>>
There was a question of what the northern border guards were doing on such a desolate frontier, and I think a good answer might be guarding prisoners (heretics, union agitators, Durite rebels) in labor camps up there. The assignment is an unpleasant one, but represents that the church and state trust the officers a lot to give them such autonomy.

Should we come up with some ice monsters for the Suuri tundra? Would Ice monsters be a weird fusion of both Fish and Rock? Ice is a mineral after all. I'm imagine a regi ice like creature with menhir runes for a face, perhaps carved by Delvers as a means of fighting against the brackish ones since ice can be easily remade and won't sink to the bottom where it can be ambushed. Though that would imply there is active warfare between the delvers and the brackish but I think the idea is both sides of fish and rock mostly ignore eachother, it's humans that are drawing these things into conflict. So perhaps some mad carver monks that smoked to much coral moved up there after being banned from the country and the order.

True I forgot they have seaweed farms, besides woven seaweed fiber textiles they could also use the seaweed for animal feed, fertilizer, and herbal medicine.

For a factory usage you can actually use seaweed for cosmetic products. Algotherapy is the use of a seaweed bath or massage scrub for the purposes of restoration of skin and beauty. With the fisher king's abilities such seaweed scrubs could actually work in major ways, perhaps even reversing aged skin. Obviously such cosmetic's would be all the rage among laprasian noble woman and beyond.

Another unknown gift of the fisher king whose long term effects can only be guessed at.

The only western border is with Ververia, idk how much conflict is there.
the Eastern Border is where the Durit rebellion is hottest right? Would we consider it an active war zone at this point or more just the occasional rebel warband hit and run?
The Masovii aren't in active conflict with Lapsari but are helping fund the durit rebels.
Perhaps the southern border is actually quite boring since it's just managing incoming and outgoing masovii and jesentrof dignitaries and buissnessmen and that's why the northern border solider is glad he isn't there because he'd be bored to death?

I personally think there's an 'old' culture that has all but completely deteriorated with their last true members worshiping the 'Big Worm.' The rest completely turned into cannibals drawing strength from 'stone and marrow taken' and similar horrors.
Then you have Aemids who are just chugging along on their yaks, and the most recent invaders from the East, our Wooden Warriors who've been harassing the Lapsarians. And the Aemiids. And anything unfortunate enough to cross paths with them.

The Suuri is a name the lapsarian's collectively give to the various nomadic tribes and cults scattered throughout the tundra but each have their own names and belief's many revolving around the various strange beast of the land as powerful spirits and some believe the mist itself as powerful sky spirit that protects the land.

Scholars argue wither these tribes are the ancestors of the Ververia or the other way around.

It's not that Lapsaria isn't a nightmare, but one that you could probably get real comfy in.
In the right circumstances anyways. The good end for the Durites is probably getting back on the horse and going across the vast to ruin some poor Dynasties day.

Ownt, stop it. I think in general most people in the Docs took to the formating conventions fairly well. The index is being updated frequently, and people are using the correct titling levels. The rest is just parsing through the text layers out and distilling it to something more condensed and readable, which several people have been doing

Nation of Stone-worshippers who either fucked up, or got fucked up by the Slab Knights during the Ververian campaign. It's kinda vague in the lore document.

There's a bit in the lore document about them maybe being pseudo-stone worshippers whose isolation from the vast has caused them to develop their own sub-faith of stone worship involving things like totems and engravings of the monolith, to try and connect them to the aemid and other tundra groups.

I also remember from a couple threads back something about the Ververian campaign being the reason for/cause of(?) the modernization of the Lapsarian military, which also kinda implied they were a naval rival of Lapsaria before the modernization, as this would explain why Lapsaria needed a large navy to begin with.

Hell, that would play well into explaining why the Ververian campagin started at all, as the Deacon could consider stone-worshippers sailing the oceans to be blasphemous against the fish (maybe they really were too) but would be able to spin it to the tsar/tsarina (don't know which was in power when the campaign happened) as bringing a dangerous rival on their border to heel.

But I kind of agree, maybe reduce the tensions to just two main groups with still some minor people, and they still haven't run out of yechods to hunt.
Maybe the coastal area were invaded by some sunset islanders long ago, and the people there a bit more distinct from the inlanders from the mountains.
And make it so the dynasty is from a recent matrelianial marrriage that techinically made them a cadet branch, but the king is not a prince, and neither will be his children, unless one of the branches gets wiped out.

It was sarcasm.

What an absolute legend.

>>82154383
This is that time of history when the big players have swallowed their neighbors and haven't gotten them all good and assimilated yet.

Based, We need Dugin cameo as Lapsarian propagandist\radical
>>
>>82154416
Personally I'd rank it as closer to
>So Dugin says we should probably roll over France and Arabia
>That's so fucking-
>AFGHANISTAN LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
And,
>So Churchill says we Gallipoli is easy prey
>I don't know if the Turks-
>ANZAC LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

The Monolith wants naught, Fish crave relation and expansion. But it's men taking the 'underlying' message (there is none) and running with it. Right over their neighbors.
>>
>>82154432
Just shooting from the hip, sounds like a stone/pain position
>>
>>82154432
His alignment here will be, probably, strongly towards to stone.

>Setting is XIXth cetury with magick and steam[oil]punk vibes

>>

Less Magick power, more alchemical horse-killers really.
>>
>>82154432
Is he ore or less patriotic than the minmaxed Phrenologist?
>>
>>82154466
Magic is meant to be subtle in the setting
curses and fortune telling
not enchanted power armour
>>
>>82154504
Well, there is something closer to magic armor, but it's made out of wood.
And it being magical is also debatable.
>>
>>82154504
My bad, I just get used to call everything unrealistic magick. You know, like I would call magick all that stuff with augmentation and nanites in cyberpunk setting.
>>
>>82154504
>>82154466
>>82154523
if you do a good enough wojak, everything can work
>>
>>82154523
Suuri wood is built different I guess.
>>
>>82154523
I think the wooden armour was basically just meant to be really strong wood

we could have them use some kinda sealant made out of the pitch of the tree mixed with narwhal oil that greatly hardens the wood's surface
>>
>>82154544
>>82154557
That is why it's debatable, if you ask the shaman who are the only ones that know how to properly harvest the trees and keep their strength, they are magical.
For a soldier firing at some tribals and he shrugfing it off, it'a magic.
If professor would have all the materials used and studied the rituals, he could prove it's natural. Atleast as natural as other things in this world.
>>
>>82154590
well they wouldn't be shrugging em off completely, right, they'd just be more resisting
>>
>>82154597
Of course, but it's the panic and fear making it looking like it is.
>>
>>82154597
>>82154590
certainly be hell to fight when the tribals get into bayonet range
>>
>>82154557
Materials are everything in Leviathan if you aren't dealing with primordials, although their rarity is what always kept things in the status-quo.
A whole host of raw goods in the far North could be used to induce supernatural effects, things not available in the south or even considered.

Take the Cannibals. They derrive their strength from 'stone-in-marrow' so they aren't as much raw cannibals as bone eaters. Although they'd probably eat everything.
>>
>>82154618
Worst part is that the tribals also like looting any guns they find.
They can't make nore ammo and gunpowder, but every raid they getsome to replenish.
The north is horrible, but it's not an impossible situation.

If you look at this guy's gun >>82152412 though, it's clearly tribal-made. So they're not completely incapable of producing arms.

He just decorated it.
Imagine not personalizing your loot to honour the land, wouldn't be me.

>>82154669
Like the actual Haida the only thing restraining their crafters is supplies. At one point the Spanish absolutely got their shit kicked in when a raiding party fitted a cannon on one of their giga canoes.

I think we should have a "Characters" section for each faction that has important people in them (Or one overbearing Characters section divided into the factions for easier localizing, not surew which is better).
>>
>>82154698
what the hell compells you
>>
So is nobody going to point out that the "Wendigos" assume, wrongly, that stone has the same kind of mutative powers as fish?
>>
>>82154737
Theyvaren't mutated becauae of the stone, they are mutated because of canibalism.
And less mutant, and more a different breed of rock eater.
>>
>>82154719
This ivory leg
>>
>>82154749
Okay if they're just a different kind of hominids that's fine.
>>
>>82154758
It could also be a pain transformation rather than just stone. All primordial elements can change, but something about frozen cannibals says 'warped.'
>>
>>82154737
So ideas so far:
Degraded stone worshippers that got changed by pain after going cannibal.
Northern rock eaters troglodytes that throw rocks and eat man instead.
Cannibals who ritualistic eat people who eat oil, it changed them even worse. Like some kind of second hand smoking
>>
>>82154822
>Northern rock eaters troglodytes that throw rocks and eat man instead.
I am for this, plus maybe some oil from beached whales
>>
>>82154710
well we've typically been putting the contents of the wojaks at the bottom of the faction entry, so a character section at the bottom is probably a good idea
>>
>>82154822
>Northern rock eaters troglodytes that throw rocks and eat man instead.
As opposed to the southern rock eater troglodytes that eat rocks and throw men
>>
>>82154852
Maybe they also learn to mimic phrases to lure in victims.

That, together with the narwhals songs, could mean that the natives developed a culture to ignore distant cries from help, distrust strangers, to always stay together in large group and/or stab first, ask questions later.
