This is a crowd sourced endeavor to create a setting and rpg.

What was produced is pic related, the setting of LEVIATHAN, the World of Sacred Oil and Broken Stone. The purpose of this thread is to organize to continue filling out the Lore Document, congregate for map making, and for developing an RPG system for this setting.

The story of the world is emergent, being developed as we discuss and explore concepts in the setting. But at its core Leviathan is a world in the grips of change, caught between progress as the industrial revolution marches onward and primordial powers of the gods beneath and the monolith. Leviathan tells the story of a world in flux and those who can make use of such a world to exact great change. Leviathan has you take on the role of those cast out by more organized society, disgraced professors, discharged marines, nomadic tribesmen, wandering pilgrims, and more as they navigate the conflicts of Lapsaria.

The core world conflicts in the modern day are:
>The rebellion at Capri Bay, a uprising among the military over the terms of the mysterious Bargain between the Lapsarian royalty and the Gods Beneath.
>The Durite Campaign, a push by the Lapsarian military to take control of the vast and rich Durite Steppe on their eastern border.
>The Worker's Revolt, a constant ebb and flow of sentiment between the tycoons of the industrial world and those workers organizing for their rights and liberty.

First part of my agricultural write up:
>First, Aquaculture; the use of seawater to farm various crops of “seaweed”, or as it is more scientifically known “macroalgae”. This can be further distinguished between two different methods – tidal aquaculture and deep aquaculture.
>Tidal aquaculture is historically somewhat new, and was pioneered roughly 500 years by Freeskalan farmers in the Letche ago after the development of the Creeping Kelp – of which you are no doubt familiar with its dried and pickled forms that are easily found in any local marketplace. A key feature of the Creeping Kelp is its high tolerance for heat and exposure to the sun, along with its unique ability to continue to grow even out of water. Tidal aquaculture itself consists of the digging of simple canals in sandy tidal flats, shoring up the walls of which with either wood or metal brackets. Seedlings are planted during low tide, and strung together with thread or fishing line – which usually contains a tag denoting which farmer or corporation the seaweed bed belongs to. Work continues at low tide in the following months, removing various pest organisms and replanting sea anemones to more desirable locations. The predatory nature of the anemones is often not recognized by the farmers themselves – who merely consider them “pretty” or “lucky” flowers of the sea, developing great gardens at the openings of their canals and more recently at regular intervals along the canal. Even in ignorance, however, traditional farming methods must be respected here, and the anemones do great work as watchdogs for the kelp. Key regions of tidal agricultural production include Vaparo and its neighboring villages along the Anwald coastline, the Grey river delta, the Sedge wetlands, and the tidal marshes of Sardee Bay. Attempts at similar methods have been made in Jasendorf, but the coastline there is too rocky for it to be anything more than an experiment.
>>
>>82297108
>Deep Aquaculture is somewhat of a misnomer, the depths at which this method operates under are still shallow compared to the sheer depths at which the ocean can reach. Instead, this refers to non-tidal agriculture; which consists of a wide variety of shallow dwelling corals, sponges, kelps, and seaweeds – including one variety of floating seaweed. While Lapsaria is no stranger to coastal farming, its waters tend to be too deep and cold to foster the right kind of microalgae for maximum exploitation. Instead, the richest waters for shallow kelp harvesting are found in the Sunset Isles – where towering forests of kelp are long and thick enough to ensure sailing ships in their verdant clutches. As the kelp species prefers a rocky foothold, the natives of the Sunset Isles have established a curious method of crop rotation with respect to what should be a competitor for space – the much admired Coral of the region. Following large scale harvesting of a crop of Coral, the hard bleached remains of the reef are gone over by farmers with fresh kelp seedlings, creating a vast garden in a matter of weeks. Trained sea otters patrol their master’s orchard, devouring vile urchins and blasphemous starfish that would seek to decimate the harvest. In a matter of months, the kelp is ready to be gathered, dried, and sold at market.

>Second, freshwater agriculture; the perhaps oldest and much depreciated method of controlled food production known to mankind. Throughout the world, brush clearing and vast irrigation canals have all but exhausted the possibilities for harvesting the wide variety of crops found along the fertile regions of the Vast. In Lapsaria, these crops include – millet, winter wheat, flax, potato, and apples – but in other regions include exotic plants such as maize, Kyugoryu rice, squash, pumpkin, potatoes, the tomato, peppers, and the papaya; as well as certain varieties of edible desert cactus. Out of all of these, it is Kyugoryu rice that is the most intriguing; as its production involves the creation of freshwater “rice paddies”, large shallow pools which the cattail-like rice plant requires to thrive in. As water intensive as it is, pound for pound the rice grain is far more nutritious than competitor grain species; and it is perhaps this high energy food that fuels the fires of Kyugoryu’s mysterious and perhaps one day rival culture. Rice seedlings have been smuggled successfully across the stormy southern cape, and even now experimentation is ongoing to bring to bear the full might of Lapsaria’s rivers to feed the first rice farms on the western coast. Regions with less access to water have had to sadly deal with the ever present threat of dust storms stealing away topsoil and leaving farms in ruin, an ever present danger in regions farmed across the Durite Steppes.

Dunno how to feel about this one, personally.
>>
>>82297473
Added a brief line:
>But the unfortunate reality most land based agriculture has to face is not something we as Lapsarians have given up on correcting. Testing is underway in the use of a new kind of horseless carriage, known as a “tractor”, and through it we may see the rapid industrialization of agriculture as a whole – although this will perhaps have dire consequences in and of itself as agricultural laborers are forced out of the fields and into the factories, creating a new form of social disorder for which there may be no remedy. Even so, if the choice is between starvation and diaspora, we would all surely choose diaspora.

Again, don't know how to feel about it. It's a very mundane part of the setting.

>Third, Livestock; the varied and sometimes bizarre usage of domesticated animals for food and raw materials. Any schoolboy could easily recognize the sight of the common chicken, a noble Geladen aurochs, the still untamed Kossaki zubr, the majestic Yak of the Durite Steppe, or the demure Trag sheep; but few would be so easily familiar with the Freeskalon dugong or the Sunset Isles long necked turtle. A vast array of animal life supports human civilization, most of which just as dependent on access to large quantities of freshwater as plant-based agriculture. There are a few exceptions, however. The Sligaff Camel, able to survive weeks or even months without the smallest drop of water, is a vital element in surviving in the deep Vast – acting as not just a pack animal, but a source of meat and milk as well. The Southern Elephant is another drought hardy animal, although only its smaller island-dwelling cousin in the Sunset Isles is fully tamed. Further to the east, across the vast, the Kyugoryu raise their own sort of cattle alongside a domesticated boar as well as giant edible worms known as “olgoi-khorkhoi”. Little is known exactly about other animals they raise, but the unsurprised expressions of their emissaries when reviewing Lapsarian farms tells us there is far greater cross-pollination of livestock than might be initially realized.

>Overall, food production is a vital part of any civilized people, and as contact between the western mainland, the various islands, and the distant east increasing; so too shall our kitchens expand their selection of fruits, meats, and vegetables.

To be honest this isn't as good as I would have liked it to be, and if anyone wants to expand it or change it around, that's fine.

One of the big things for when tractors are invented it pushes tons of agricultural laborers to cities. So suddenly impoverished demographics that did not own land flood cities.

>life in Ververia
Life for the Marshfolk living along the rivers, marsh, and wetlands of Ververia hasn't changed much since the days of their ancestors. The Marshfolk still live in their stilt houses and ply the waters in shallow-draft boats and canoes, farm semiaquatic crops like rice, hunt and trap animals like beavers and muskrats, catch fish, and crawfish, shrimp, and oyster, eel and turtle, lobster and scallop and the famous giant Ververian crab.
In the towns and cities, merchants trade the bounty of lowlands for the bounty of the highlands, the craftsmen work not only on the everyday items of life, but also on the famous ornately carved and decorated flintlock rifles and pistols that are used by the Ververian's and prized around the world, as well as the traditional siege weaponry who's quality is said to be surpassed only by the Venitii. Milliners work hide into the Venitii-style hats Marshfolk prefer to wear, weavers created the light, but full body clothing that the Marshfolk wear to protect against mosquitos and the sun, and the Dyers dye the clothing to anything from the shades and colors of the lowlands to the bright colors and designs favored by the Clannsmen.

Though the mixed religion of the Ververian's has become dominant in Ververia, the traditional ways of the Marshfolk remain legally accepted and respected in Ververia, even as more and more Marshfolk more away from the old ways. Marshfolk religion has several similarities to Venitii worship, but is significantly more localized. Marshfolk will venerate and offer sacrifices and worship to the body of water they live on, be it river, sea, lake, or marsh. Though these practices can be localized to a single village, it is more common for several villages in the area to venerate the same body of water. These villages would usually be on friendly terms with each other, and would form a greater community, but this wouldn't be a political connection, but rather a social and religious one.
>>
>>82299305
It was these semi-connected communities that the Conqueror unified into the well defined Razryad during the firsts days of Ververia. Many of those communities remain extant in lowlands and swamps to this day, and form the core of the current Marshfolk culture.

Perhaps as a consequence of this, life of your average Marshfolk is much more localized than the semi-nomadic Clannsmen or the more cosmopolitan Ververians. It is quite common for Marshfolk never to have left their Razryad unless in military service.
With that being said, life in the lowlands is undeniably the most peaceful in Ververia, with no concern being given for Suuri raids, Lapsarian skirmishes, or Venitii shenanigans.

As a result of this, there is a stereotype of Marshfolk being simple, unconcerned with anything outside of their lowlands and only marginally part of Ververia, a claim they will angrily dispute, as Marshfolk take great pride in their connection to the Conqueror and to the state they live in.
>>
So what is the deal with Ververia? They get a lot of attention on threads, but in the lore document it is just 8 pages of disorganized contradictory info.

Is anyone ever going to try to smooth things out?
>>
>>82299816
>Is anyone ever going to try to smooth things out?
Eventually? Probably.
Though people will work in what people are interestd in, so the only person you can count on to work on something specific is yourself. Be the change you want to see in the world anon.
>>
>>82299877
Alright, I will see what I can do
>>
>>82299816
It's probably going to need a push like what happened for the lapsarian faith at this point, and by that I mean a massive autistic argument that leads to a bunch of good ideas and two days of rewruting to make ot all make sense.
>>
>>82299816
>>82300002
The big questions, like how Ververia was formed, what cultures make up the country, and how they "won" the Ververian Campaign have all been generally agreed on, It's just a matter of transcribing it to the doc and cleaning it up a bit. I was planning on doing that after I finish fucking around with some maps.

The real issue is Ververian religion, which is a mess that hasn't been discussed for a while. I liked the idea of a decentralized, water linked, but not directly fish related religion for the Marshfolk, based on the Venitii reverence for the Venit, but focused on local water features instead. This would help explain why the Clannsmen's religion influenced the new Ververian faith more than the Marshfolk, as the Marshfolk religion held little sway outside of their traditional lands.
I also liked the idea that was floated around for the Clannsmen that "Clansmen have a Monolith inspired faith focused on "worshiping totems and engravings of the monolith as a proxy", which would explain the Slab density, as slabs would be something directly worshiped.".
>>
>>82300335
I like both of your ideas for Clansmen and Marshfolk. For the Ververian (or whatever the correct ter for the unified culture is) religion, do you have any ideas?
>>
>>82300335

It is actually kind of unclear why the Ververian Campaign happened since the religion question, and also there is little detail on it considering how important it was supposed to be.

Yeah the religion looks like a mess.

I reorganized the discussion a bit so that similar topics are close together. I also provided brief summaries, and copied in a couple missing discussions from old threads.
>>
SO I have a proposal speciifically for CCA >>82297046

SHould we maybe take a cleu from the real world and have more land in the nOrthern than the Southern hemisüphere? By that I mean, move the Vast a little up North relative to the equator? That way i think a lot of the temparatures, like that of Jasentorf and the Suuri tundra make more sense PLUS it allows us a stretch of "exotic subtropical/tropical foreigners " along the bottom. The way it is right now I think begs a lot of questions.regarding culture vs climate, the further equatorwards you go
>>
>>82300582
So my thoughts on the combined religion is that back when the Conqueror finished unifying Ververia, he spent much of his reign promoting unity between the two groups, (which included a marriage at Susa type deal) and part of that was promoting tolerance of each other's religious beliefs. He did not try and create a new religion, he was just trying to prevent friction between the two groups.
His closet followers and the nobles from both groups who supported him (including most were part of the mass wedding) took this to heart and formed families where their spouse followed a different religion.
In addition to this, the areas where this new group (who take the name Ververian from the Conquerors House of Verver) settled were outside of both the marshes and highlands.

Of the two cultures, the Marshfolk faced more difficulties trying to worship the same way they used to, since their worship was highly dependent on offering sacrifices and gifts to the waters that supported them, and since their rituals and worship were both localized to rivers and marshes they no longer lived by. To deal with this change, the Marshfolk took to making small shrines, usually involving water gardens or a water feature of some kind, but still yearned for their home river. As such, it became a tradition to return to the waters you came from at least once (most would visit several times over their lives) and offer a sacrifice and thanks.
Conversely, the Clannsmen's monolith-inspired faith wasn't nearly as dependent on geography, and was able to weather the change better. Totem worship and engraving went on as it always had, essentially unchanged from how it was practiced before.

Will continue.
>>
>>82301481
The children of this new group grew up exposed to both religions and adopted both of them, taking up the worship of both the totem and the waters. This was encouraged by the Conqueror who saw it as another way to try and blend the two cultures. In practice this meant more totem-inspired worship than water worship, but both were present and influenced each other. Engravings of the waters became common on totems, the family water garden or shrine might have an engraved monolith as a focal point, while the pilgrimages have become an important rite of passage for Ververians becoming an adult.

As such the Ververians faith is stone aligned, with a totem worshiping religion that is distinct from related Clannsmen and Suuri faith by a smaller, but nonetheless important focus on the waters of Ververia.
>>
>>82300650
That's true, why is started it still up in the air. The general course of it seemed to be agreed upon though, where Lapsaria moves into Ververia, faces long supply lines that it can't adequately protect, inefficiencies in its military, and Fabian warfare and constant guerilla attacks that turn the campaign into Lapsaria's own winter war. In the end, Lapsaria took what lands it could hold onto and all the slab dust they could grab and peaced out, with military reforms coming hot on the heels of the wars end.

Also man, good on you for reorganizing that section, it looks a lot better.
>>
>>82301481
>>82301508
Ververia suffers from neatness syndrom. There is no land with the marshfolk and no water with the clannsmen. Why are the shrines and totems of the Marshfolk water features? Why are they not similar to waht the dominant culture has, a culture which is not geographically seperated from them anywhere?
Their shrines should be similar to the totems, they should be made of stone and its not being pure water would be a feature not a bug. You can't have the Marshfolk be active and semi-equal participants in the coutnry's politics but simultaneously isolationist traditionalists who dare not adopt scary outsider culture.
>>
>>82301693
The Marshfolk wouldn't have shrines or totems, the Clannsmen would have totems and the mixed Ververians would have both. The mixed Ververian's descended from Marshfolk would have built shrines and gardens dedicated to the waters since they were no longer by their traditional waters. Over the centuries, these shrines and gardens might have integrated some stone related features into them that were not present originally. Likewise, the mixed Ververian's totems might have integrated some water related designs over time.

The Marshfolk who remained by their traditional waters wouldn't alter the way they worshiped because nothing had changed for them. There would be similarities between how they worship at the waters and how the mixed Ververian's worship at shrines, but the traditional Marshfolk would not integrate Clannsmen worship into their water worship.
Likewise, the Clannsmen who didn't mix with the Marshfolk and who stayed true to their Clannsmen culture wouldn't adopt the worship of the waters. There would be similarities between their worship and the mixed Ververian's worship, but without any water shrines or gardens.
It's the mixed group that has the similarities to both of the other groups in their worship.

With that being said, Ververia is a little too neat when it comes to inner strife, so why shouldn't the Marshfolk's refusal to meld with the greater whole be a sticking point for Ververia in the present day?
The Ververian's religion is more totemist than marshist, so they wouldn't have as much problems with the Clannsmen, but perhaps after the Ververian Campaign water worship becomes looked down upon by the more diehard Ververian's and Clannsmen due to perceived connections with Lapsaria's religion?

We could have the wild elephants in an older more ancient sultanate or khanate or something along the more southern coast of the Vast.

Yes, we must all bow at the altar of creativity, we must not give in to the temptation of hating what made /tg/ so good in the "old days." Except what /tg/ made was always shit. Very few of /tg/'s "original ideas" are any good. Has CCA described how high fantasy characters are supposed to be? As in how much of a hero should I expect my PC to be?

I don't like the idea of playing super mudcore shitfests.
>>
>>82307597
I think Lapsaria is a good size, it's like 1.2x the size of mexico (would be the 10th biggest country on earth in the modern age).

>>
>>82307604
We would know more when doing the backgrounds, but he got the flu.
Apparently you can just give the PCs more point to make them stronger if you want.
>>
>>82307604
We’ll the setting itself is fairly low fantasy and grounded, the examples given for roll checks seem to be more on the side of campy adventure, like Indiana Jones
>>
>>82307604
While this is more on the grounded side, I'd definitely say this isn't mudcore. Low-end characters will be fairly mundane, but there is a lot of growth options.
Consider how Stone-Singers will be a progression choice.
>>
>>82307604
The examples for characters CCA used in examples are a:
>former soldier
>university researcher
>mountaineer
So grounded, but the situation in the examples describes them eluding a chase from a bunch of police then breaking into a rich guy's house.

>>
>>82307800
I mean, the Vast is 99% wasteland. We were discussing additions to it and how pilgrimages work.

What we got was:
>cultures similar to Bedouins traverse the edges of the Vast
>Pilgrimages to the interior are very dangerous, but possible (particularly with guides)
>Massive Monsoons from the world ocean come in every few years during Monsoon Season and soak parts of The Vast, making Pilgrimages easier that season
>Since Lapsaria have declared open hostilities against the Monolith there have only been a few prime pilgrimage seasons

Plenty of deserts directly border the ocean with only extremely small barriers directly next to the water. It is dependent on whether the wind is blowing towards or away from the continent. If it is blowing away then the vast can go with up to the shoreline.

Deserts in Africa, South America, and Asia all border the ocean.

The isles simply don't have the metals or the bodies for an Immortal type unit. However the Islands are more indusive to other types of warrior.
>Mercenaries; Lapsarian, Veverian & Jasen soldiers already well armed and armoured are worth their weight in sugar, as not only body-guards but commanders and trainers
>Furies; A distinct class of warrior that is more egalitarian in recruitment based on weapons skill, light armour, and extreme chemical intakes to render them immune to pain
>Nobles; The upper class expected to take arms, well armoured (with import metal) and disciplined, usually a Sultan relies on these three for their core forces
>Common Scum; Pirates, Tribal Raiders and the like, offered riches by Sultans to harass their enemies, drift about the Isles like roving dogs
>Tribal Retinues; For the Sultans on the fringes of civilization, warriors are expected to serve their sultan in exchange for tribal rights
>Slaves and Commoners; Largely underutilized aside total war, Sultans are very weary of populist and slave revolts, and such masses are minimally armed and armoured
>Hiejies; A new class of local mercenary that utalize exclusive foreign weapons and the run-offs of Lapsarian military goods. Use more modern guns and notably ambitious.

The Reef is on the level of a legend. It's like Atlantis because it's out there doing loop-de-loops on the currents, while the Forest is responsible for an entire region's economy and a not insignificant part of the landmass.

Kyoguro is definitely on the other end of thecontinent, so off-map.

And I am still vouching for Nottomans in free space. They would fit the setting too perfectly, their esthetics rocks, and that way Lapsaria is not the only country going industrial.

>>82309694
Masovii is.
To have another country full on industry, they will either need black salt or oil.
So maybe a southern salt plains? If there are two countries with a bargain it will weaken the whole thing.
>>
>>82309690
Part of it is the wojaks. They see them and think there’s nothing more to it than the surface level memes.

The other part is people see writing a setting as not /tg/ enough

And then there’s the how dare you like things I don’t like fags that have been hitting the black salt hard
>>

I think the idea was industrialization in masovii was developing but not really there yet.
And Jasentorf isn’t industrial at all
>>
>>82309768
Unless they somehow can get enough oil from their dredge pit equivalent to get oil.
But even them it's bad, because now you have a nation that has it's cake and ate it too.
Still like the idea the the suuri tundra has the potential to be dredged, because it's a hostile place, something only a PC going out of their way to find out, and it means having to deal with the internal schemes of Lapsaria as well to even start, a good mix of exploration, adventure, combat and intrigue.
>>
>>82309721
Yes, because it implies a WW1 scenario in a century or so. Even if Lapsaria survives its current struggles, the Nottomans will eventually catch up in tech and meet themin the battlefield.
Masovii could fill that role, but they are also close enough to fight and defeat (assuming ideal circumstances for not!russians).

The point is : I don't like having a single industrial power in the entire world, beccause real life has proven how horrifyingly imbalanced industry is. In the current setting, I feel like, if Lapsaria doesn't collapse right now, it will steamroll the entire planet in the next 50 years.

Imagine if the UK never had to contend with France or Russia.

I have added the basic framework for backgrounds into the backgrounds section of the rules document:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kV4IkD7O2qFX6C0YYZQ78SBqpcJv07uy72ow-Mcvt3g/edit?usp=sharing

It is under the section titled Backgrounds, which contains both an example, the description of what a background is, and the rules for creating a background. Please look this over.

Now, I realize that this will be a bit hard because not all skills are entirely clear on their usages, but if someone has a question I will be at all points available to clarify as I continue to fill things out.
>>
>>82310008
Makes sense. Personally I'm just trying to think of ways to keep this region from just having another Empire. Tarca is a good start and ties Jasentorf to the south.
This area also being a stone's throw away from the interior also allows for a degree of black salt utilization, however I feel it best to hard lock their progression to something.
Maybe it's better to start with cultures? We already have five kingfoms in Tarca.
>>
>>82310055

Our current setting is mainly inspired by eastern european, central asian and central european cultures in the 17th-19th century. I see Nottomans as an absolutely obvious inclusion, even if it is just background. Mamelukes are cool, but they fit more in the sunset islands (mediteranean arabs).

Though Janissaries and Mamelukes are essentially the same thing. You can fuse them andhave the Nottomans be ruled by decadent warrior-slaves. It explains their current irrelevance, makes them the sickman of the setting, and maintains their core identity
>>
>>82310095
So basically, Amedone is more Jasen like, more decentralized with manors and nobles.
Mesmire was also a kingdom, but it was way more centralized, having their nobility be basically courtier and officers for the kings. One of the reason the capital was moved there even though they are the junior partner.
Sacrevil was a theocracy, with some independent villages scattered around.
Galbrela was a sultanate, since the ruler was an invading sunseter, but the place itself is a melting pot.
Fesingia was a confederation/alliance of tribes, villages and cities.
There were other minor powers, most of them vassals to one of these big kingdom, but b the time of the unification they were already assimilated by the big players.
>>
>>82310148
They were on the rise to be an empire, but them the jannielucks did their coup and the place started to stagnate.
>>
>>82310148
The sick man thing was a bit of a joke. They can be a regional power. Maybe even have some fingers in the Sunset Isles.
>>
>>82310037
Took me a minute to realize the difference between minor spec and minor focus was the change of 1-word lmao.

Anyhow from what I can see so far the Backgrounds and Perks should be probably done after we have skills/equipment/rituals all done just for sake of making it slightly more coherent.

>>82312471
I'd imagine they really aren't all that connected to the world economy. They border a hostile nation to the east, and hostile tribes to the north and west. There would be naval trade to Jasentorf and Freeskalon, but it wouldn't be driving the kingdoms economy or anything.

The only big thing that has been mentioned as a possible export are the high-quality ornately-carved and decorated flintlock rifles the Ververian's make, which could be popular amongst foreign nobility as sporting pieces.

I think this is it? Didn't find any text for the Clansman, so it's just standing there.
Anything I missed just tell me and I'll fix it in a couple of hours

Could the king also have something like "the pride of the hills" to show he represents both?

I think tthe idea anon was building towards was the King reigns oveer the marshes and the Queen over the Hills (At least symbolically).

Nah, I can remember something about that a thread or two back. I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be the royal house that symbolizes the hills and marsh, or the king and queen in particular though.
>>
>>82313763
Maybe both? Like the royal house was formed as the union of both of these symbols, and to symbolize this the king and queen have distinct (symbolical) roles.
Not sold on them having actual different purposes, but a symbolical thing is cool

I like this. Especially since it's been established the Conqueror was a Marshfolk, it makes sense he took a Clannsmen as a wife. Put his mouth where is money is when advocating unity.

New thread?
