>>
>>86404223
What about "Cottonmouths". Cottonmouths are swamp dwelling snakes that hold their ground and try to intimidate their enemies but aren't as aggressive as people think. This could serve as a characterization of the regiment. You could even have the gatormen have white mouths to keep that synergy.

Since they deal with chaos, you could also reference them kind of acting as exterminators. So how about something like "Sucker Stompers".
>>
>>86404364
I like the name cottonmouths for them
>>
alright so I got a pretty insane idea here but what if they used the abhumans as steeds? so we got swamp nobles riding around on top of alligator men (allimen?).
>>
>>86405518
I'm not sure about steeds since that make the Inquisition deem them as mutants. I think if they had some gator like predator on their planet could be cool. They might even use that as a mount like Krieg.
>>
>>86404223
I'm thinking these guys used to have some other purpose but recently (think within last 100 years) had a chaos cult go unchecked and have been fighting a losing battle to control the major populations center since. They're working with abhumans that used to wander the wilds on the periphery of the more industrialized areas in pairs (one ogrynator for the muscle and navigation of the swamp and a dude with the equipment and knowledge to strike high value targets where they can. They're absolutely loyal to the Emperor, but the ceaseless march of chaos through the palatial estates and cities they once governed has left them in despair. News of their struggle has spread far (mainly due to the efforts of one incredibly wealthy patron) but coming close to losing your home to chaos and working with mutants has soured their reputation amongst some factions in the imperium. Their leader, Archer Lejeune just looked up cajun general and picked a name, fights with one of the same chainswords given to his family, and by extension the Cottonmouths, 2000 years ago.

so some regiment that used to be REALLY GOOD(?) at something else after two millennium of doing it are now reduced to frogmen after so many casualties and inability/unwillingness to recruit but the scooters are gators and their doing special operations (not that well but hey when your a few hundred guys in the swamp on a planet of 20,000,000 what can you do) while what's left of the PDF, volunteers, and any imperial forces who happen to be there do the heavy fighting against a chaos cult that's been going wild for the last however many years

>>86405518
I pictured something like a saurus but less lizard and more human. I think they'd operate both as the "Hunter"
>cultists get free reign of the cities unless some larger loyalist force steps in
>HOWEVER
>being nobility, the men have contacts in society to know what's moving where and when
>meanwhile gatormen know the terrain having lived there for many generations
>anytime cultists try to move anything valuable between or out of cities (VIPs, equipment, information) they get hit
the "Killer" would be them paired up (one gator, one man with however many pairs you need to complete the mission) in ambush. Big gators dragging cultists into the swamp while the men strike whatever they need to in the chaos. Then they sink into the swamp and GTFO. "Hunter-Killer" because they would be doing gorilla warfare across the planet if they had the numbers but they are limited to just striking high value targets when they can.

>Warrior Brotherhood: Military strength is prized by the Imperium like few other virtues. It is this strength, and the will to wield it, that is valued above almost all else in protecting the holdings of Mankind. Those entrusted with this task sometimes let their heady burden take control of them, and devote their lives to war as a craft, hobby, or even religion, rather than a duty. Such cults can arise within militant forces such as the Adeptus Arbites or planetary Enforcers as easily as the Imperial Guard or Navy.

>Desperate Underclass: Although the Imperium’s ponderous bureaucracy is the only institution vast and powerful enough to keep humanity alive in these dark times, it does so at a terrible cost. Innumerable cults have risen from those ground between the gears of empire, seeking only to better their own admittedly miserable lot. While pitiable, their actions invariably threaten the lives of many millions more.

So that's why they only use nobility for the regiment. 1d20 for the cult's ideas

Common soldiery getting swept up by chaos to get back at the nobility in command? Maybe that explains the regiment being decimated (turncoats+a purge) and why they aren't taking any more recruits (only the leadership that survived and have been proven loyal). I like it because it explains how a few hundred guys can be a player on a planet of millions since the Cottonmouths that survived were the command structure. So you get cultists with a bunch of MEAT to throw at problems and all this >>86411505 but they're lacking competent leaders in the field. Reminds me of reading about how the Republican navy in the Spanish Civil War had an atrocious record because the common sailors had thrown many officers overboard when they mutinied

>Knowledge: To live as a scholar in the Imperium of Man is to remain in frustrating ignorance. Mankind has forgotten and lost more knowledge than most xenos races have assembled by the death of their civilizations. The Adeptus Mechanicus worsens this crushing ignorance with their monopolies on technology and data, together with their stifling (often punishing) adherence to doctrine. Some groups appear to stand against the darkness, however, to either seek out the knowledge of the past or to seek new and abominable information. For a frustrated scholar, such groups would appear ready to slake his thirsts.

Other Inquisitors have a love/hate relationship with them as they, while a minority, are the standard stereotype: They will either despise the preconceptions working against them or abuse this by coming off as reasonable and disarming others through being "friendly" or surprising and unbalancing the targets of investigation.

Perhaps it's some sort of device that can't simply be activated from orbit and he and the Cottonmouths are orchestrating a last resort plot to detonate the device before escaping offworld? Maybe they need to secure a missing component from the CSM, or to plant it in the right facility for it to work.

>manages to secure some sort of exterminatus-grade ordinance from the rogue trader and is trying to activate it with the help of the cottonmouths
Something like that?
>>
>>86432977
Yeah. My idea was he’s using the Cottonmouths as bait to try to lure as many of the CSM possible to the planet. If they keep taking out leadership more of them should come to deal with the threat. He’s waiting for it to hit critical max so they can all die in the name of the Emperor
>>
>>86432809
>>86432924
The people helping the Chaos cult all have ulterior motives too. The word bearers want to make the planet's cult worship the big four and the ultras are only interested in learning their rituals and probably can't be assed to fight unless they feel like stretching their legs. Starting to dislike offworlders to be quite honest. Maybe dealing with them so often is why the nobles were such dicks in the first place.

Ah yes, the Kay'Jinns, a large scaly folk, believed to be the insular descendants of some of the first colonists upon this world, adapted to the hostile swamp by becoming similar to the reptilian inhabitants that lived beside them
The Kay'Jinns called their homelands the D'livrance (in Reptilia Gothica literally "the Lands of the Dueling Bann-Jou" which is a kind of stringed instrument they're quite adept at playing despite the clawlike growths their fingers become as they get older)
What passes for a Capital for their Near Savage peoples is called Nuvo Aurleans and is thought to be the place where their ancestors first landed.
Nauwlins, as the Abhumans call it amongst themselves, is home to some of their most important cultural rituals with the celebration of "Marties Grass" being their apex of mirth via the propensity for vast quantities of what they've named "CometGlow" to be consumed until female Kay'Jinns bellow with happiness and give their clothes as gifts in return for clay beads.

right hand side, top to bottom
>Scintillan Fusiliers
>Ventrillian Nobles
>random cowboy
First two are an example of an imperial regiment that draws from nobility, and then a random cowboy.

Their homeworld isn't wealthy, so I don't picture them as done up as the guy in the top right. Really nice scabbards, sidearms, and swords though, like the officers from the union/confederacy. Big plumage in the helmets/hats, with the arrangement and colors showing what family you are from. So something like ventrillian nobles mixed with scifi civil war. Maybe dull green and greys for most uniforms and armor with civil war great coats on top but with mardi gras colors slapped here and there. Beards and mustaches are part of the uniform.

Cowboy look is for after the purge? Regulations gone out the window and everyone's just using what they have scavenged or what's been given by the trader/inquisitor.
>>
>>86440164
It makes sense if their uniform is made of basic materials, but is off specific and fanciful styling.
The issue isn't likely the access to the uniforms, it's that no one is bothering to wear 'em right.
Ergo you get swamp cowboy.
>>
>>86440164
>Beards and mustaches are part of the uniform.
>everybody is walking around with beards

Only name suggestions I see for them were the Heralds of the Void and the Golden Choir. For the Heralds a Dark Apostle leading them would make sense since they’re word bearers and are fanatical. But they also like Daemon Engines and biological warfare so a Warpsmith wouldn’t be a crazy idea either. For the Golden Choir seems like it’d be a Chaos Lord since they seem fairly basic

I am the bear of His secret, a whisper and a roar and an endless lie. I am the bearer of His hatred, of His fury, of His vengeance, of His terror. I am the bearer of the end of all things.
A man of black eyes, unblinking, ancient, yet set in the clean fleshed face of a boy. His hand never leaves the bauble at his neck, a fist-sized device, ornate and whorled, its surface sometimes shifting like quicksilver just as one looks away from it. Tomes hang from his hips, shuddering in their chains long after he stops moving. Where he came from, no one knows the truth, but everyone knows a half-truth. A massacre, a coup, a planet in smoke, an ocean of blood parted in his wake, whispers and guesses made half in jest. Better not to ask for the other halves. In the dead of night he can be found some ways away from camp, pacing, gazing at the stars, scrawling in the ground, his feet tracking terrible images in the muck. By morning the earth is packed flat, as smooth as glass.

>Whatever happened, roll 1d100 on this table to establish this world's original class, before everything went to shit in a stain. If this is rolled then roll again to determine the original class, rerolling rolls of 93 and 94 as Forbidden Worlds are already quarantined by definition. If you hit 81, 82 or 83 again reroll, or maybe it was quarantined for a long time and records as to why have been lost or classified so the sector government is uncomfortable with lifting the quarantine but it is likely not bad enough to for a full Forbidden World.
That explains lack of reinforcements. 1d100 for its real class

swamp plantations but also heavy industrial centers dotted around the planet? or is the industrial development "new" (last couple of decades) and done after the quarantine went up?

Maybe it was relatively backwards, but the Administratum wanted a civilized world instead of an agri-world and had been investing in building it up before shit went down. Friction with offworlders resettled to kickstart the process could also partially explain the initial interest in the world's old religion.
