/tg/ - Traditional Games

File deleted.
USA USA USA edition

>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPS A GAME.
IT IS CURRENTLY PLAYABLE.
EXPEDITION - an ~1870s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood storm hellscape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, fight each other for victory.
A campaign mode is planned, but is far from completion.

3 versions of the rules exist, TWO of which have been playtested:
>1e - proof of concept, recently updated with unit stats
>2e - lead by 2e anon, playtests started, unified document is in the works
>3e - Replaced 4e because it died. Spearheaded by 3e anon, needs more playtests, rules present in the doc

>What can I do?
Shitpost, meme, get comfy. Read over the docs to settle in.
Familiarize yourself with rules and plan some playtests.
Contribute if you have ideas. Give feedback on contributions if you don't.

I've been out of the threads for a while, but I remember the original plan for America was making them the ambushing skirmish faction, the kind of guys who shoot you from four different angles if you push out too far, and that just makes me think, if they are the ambushers, would it be too much if they could pull out skinwalkers and shit?
I know skinwalkers and wendigos are quite different things, but combining the two makes for a great monster

U.S. Predisent - Warren D. Moleman
Originally son of a wealthy Mining family from the Deep South. He emerged into the American political landscape, and rose to power with Groundbreaking policies. Currently serving his third consecutive term. His old friend George Underhill, serves as Vice President.

President Moleman is known for his short height and pale skin. His wife, Sandy Loam, and the vice president share those traits. Despite his timid attitude, the President's prudent statecraft has maintained order and unity during a period when the nations foundations are being literally undermined.

Proposal for faction leader of the USA since we can't agree on an exact time period so the serving president is uncertain. He gets repeatedly re-elected.

"Warren" is not goofy, in fact it was the name of a man born around this time who later became president. And it has absolutely no connotations which involve burrowing underground. As for the surname, it's not goofier than anything else we have going on, maybe change the spelling to "Mollman", it rolls off the toungue nicely with the "a' de-emphasized. If people really don't like it maybe rename the VP and steal "Underhill". Of course "Burrows" and "___bury" are also surnames that people actually have.

And of course he's an expedition sponsor, Just as the government originally rewarded people for moving out west, he put government resources into expanding American influence downwards.

Its kinda our fault for not settling on a President earlier anyway.
Also, what's the US attitude toward it's hat at the moment? In rl ~1870 there was a lot of tension between the two, Grant himself called Canada "unfriendly to the US" over some fishing dispute, despite working to end the Fenian raids. Would these have also happened in our timeline? Were the big tough Civil War veterans wrecked by leafs and lys militia men &women also just like rl?

The Civil War goes through periods of intense romanticization followed by utter indifference. Up until 2005, it was a conflict few Americans (I know) knew, much less cared, about save for the old south which has a very bad history with racial segregation and ethnic grudges. Then it came back with a vengeance. I still remember being twelve years old and the token black kid stumbling over 'who was Abraham Lincoln' in history class.

It's all mindrot.

>that guy was the one who made the last setting thread center around Nazi garbage.
I've had *precisely* the same thought.
As for today's profile, something fun.
Something BIG.
Idea is that he's always going to take a fuckhuge chunk of your Silver to field. From 3/4 to 2/5 depending on the size. And he can murder the fuck out of the whole other army by himself. But he can (with a LOT of efforts) be taken down.
So the idea is that the player needs to think about how much tanking he wants it to take before getting him to disappear and respawn behind some poor enemy. You don't want him to disappear too often or too early because without the LP ability he skips a turn before spawning back. The opponent can try to trigger this by sniping whoever you have escorting him.
Sort of a boss fight by himself. I guess you *could* just have him followed by 19 Titanium Miners, it is La Ombre after all.
>>
Traction Engine Update:
I'm moving, it's gonna be a little bit before more progress.
Once I get the engine done (In ten to twelve years) I'm going to paint some perry brothers British Infantry, but after that I'll need an opposing force for them.
Anyone have suggestions for good fishpeople models to represent morlocks? Or some nice lemurian models. I haven't been able to find too much in plastic.
>>
File: HomeGuard.png (117 KB, 642x674)
117 KB

>>89968385
Absolutely based. Will look for appropriate models for either Lemurians or Morlocks, Etruscans chariots are common enough I don't know if there might be something better. Morlocks have to have dozens of choices.
I have lots of KoB on hold and will order French troops soon enough, so that I can also build a La Ombre force. After that for an opposing force I'd like to wait and see what Hyperborea will look like.
In the meantime proposal for an Indian Home Guard Auxiliary. To continue and emphasize the theme of coming at you from all sides. This here isn't fully 100% predictable, so that you might have to deal with a staggered ambush. Even if only half the models spawn when you want them having to deal with an ambush from even shitty attackers in the back on turn 2 would be really annoying.
Mounting them on horses is probably a REALLY good idea.

And one last profile before calling it a night.
I took the Saur General idea for Post-Confederate and made it so (despite the picture) it could be used with any type of Saur mounts, its just better and more unruly. His cost is very low because otherwise he doesn't do much else than spawn ambushers (good enough), and his mount+ equipment will more than double his cost.
On this, sleep tight /eadsttcoteg/.

Replace thirteen colonies with New England since a bunch of the 13 were in the south.
also:
>City Slicker: Melee buffs (Because gang warfare)
Or take reconstruction to represent stuff like the golden gate bridge and the first skyscrapers and give the south something else

I've said it earlier but the Mu attack on New York is perfect for a Gangs of New York style boxset and we should encourage that.
>>
>>89977509
I like Thirteen Colonies for the name since it feels more evocative. Reconstruction is better for the South, I feel, since a lot of the reconstruction era efforts were on rebuilding the wartorn parts of the country. Which was mostly the south.
Thanks, Sherman.

>Russia's gimmick

Given the Alaska Purchase just happened, I want to give some kind of Russia-themed gimmick to American Heroes from that region. Maybe they get access to the bodyguard ability? Doesn't feel super American, though.
If we decide to include an Agartha entrance in Alaska, there could be some espionage shit going on as the Americans and Russians both try to control the mostly Russian colonial population. A stealth ability, maybe?

I am a big fan of dog sledding and therefore you have my vote.
Sorry I didn't post much last night and this morning, Labour took precedence.
As an aside, unless I'm mistaken I've realized Gunnery Sergeant wasn't an actual rank in ~1870 so I went with Ordnance Sergeant instead.
Its a strong ability but it conflicts with Skirmisher so the trick, if you take him, will be to keep him safe and use him as a centerpoint around which skirmishers rally to reload and then leave again.
Also!
Sponsors for the US.
Was thinking the Saur General was a really cool idea and maybe we could have a not!John Hammond building his own Triassic Ranch and allowing your expedition to use Saur Mounts instead of Horses? Perhaps his Campaign condition is that you have to kill/capture a certain number of Saurs before the end of the campaign?
And
Salvaged Hyperborean Artefacts. Should the US have some access to them, maybe through the Miskatonic Advisor, or the Paulistaen(?) Golden Syndicate, and if so, what form should they take? Hyperborean flavoured Tommy Guns?

Mormons are currently settling what will eventually become Utah. Utah doesn't get admitted until 1896, though, so at the moment they're dealing with:
The aftermath of the Black Hawk War
The last Mormon pioneer train has arrived in Salt Lake City
Zion's Cooperative Mercantile Institution has recently been founded
The completion of the Trans-Continental Railroad is bringing increasing numbers of non-Mormon settlers into Salt Lake City
The Mormon Tribune newspaper has been founded
Martin Harris, one of the Three Witnesses, joins the LDS in SLC under Brigham Young
Brigham Young gets indicted for adultery
And some other shit I don't care to summarize. Seems like a pretty important period for the LDS, actually.
>>
>>89983481
I feel like there is a lot of stuff you could do with the LDS church in this setting, but there already is a shitload of US stuff in the works (afaik) so it's probably better to focus on the other areas for now.
>>
>>89984981
Given how big the US is, it's really not surprising there's lots to draw from. Hell, Mormons could work as another subfaction to go with the Abolitionists and the Kentuckians, if we want to go that route. I do kind of like the idea of America being "the subfaction faction"
Also, another idea for a origin trait for the American hero:
Immigrant - Land of Opportunity: Choose another surface faction and add that faction's basic units (infantry/workers, no elites) to your list of hireable units.
>>
>>89983481
Mormons are interesting because they're still a 'young faith.' They've had about one hundred ninety years of history which, in comparison to Christianity and Islam, is nothing in religious history. In the last setting thread, I was halfway tempted to make the Mormons the chief rivals to the Nazis, just to make it even more hilarious. Black Nazis getting upper cut by a lily white collar-t Mormon was just amusing.

But alas, that setting died a very quiet death.
>>
>>89985880
Nazism doesn't make sense as an ideology yet. The ideas that founded it (Nietzsche, The Treaty of Versailles, etc) Hadn't happened. Which means the closed analogue to it that I can think would be genetic arguments like Phrenology and imperialism backing it up.

> BREAKING NEWS! French journalists bring support to the troubling rumors of Hyperborean worship in West Africa. A recent article on the Dahomey Kingdom in the Gazette de Paris has all but confirmed the claim, including expert testimony from both the Society for Agarthan Studies and the Miskatonic Institute. Multiple eye witnesses account are presented, including that of the most recent British diplomatic envoy to the Dahomey. According to him, the Dahomey king personally skinned and dismembered one of his own ministers in order to feed a starving mass, seemingly as a joke. Perhaps even more troubling, the envoy insists the crowd seemingly fed more on the suffering of the poor man than on his flesh itself. Other rumors mentions that Orleans has officially requested Britain's assistance with dealing with this problem. So far London has not officially responded, but it is suggested that Lord Cunningham would be inclined to apply his fleet to this task.

The British diplomat bit is actually based on a rl event. On the first day he arrived, the first Brit diplomat to be sent was greeted by the royal family and given a tour of the palace. At some point a mass of starving derelict assembled around them and begged the king to feed them. The king's response was to throw them one of his ministers and tell the crowd to eat him, which they did on the spot. Apparently this was very humoristic to the entire royal family, including the queen and princesses. At another point the same diplomat noted how insanely vulgar and crass the princesses were, pointing out that they took bets amongst themselves as to when the rotting genitals of various hanged men displayed about town would fall.

Shit’s getting a bit /pol/ around here. I’m all for additional lore, but perhaps we ought to think about what kind of crowd we’ll attract with each new addition.

Wut? Dahomey's being Hyperborean auxiliaries is something that's been mentioned a few times, and seems perfectly in theme... Also,
how is it /pol/ to display some of the worst slavers of all times as corrupted by pain eldritch beings? Is France and Britain going to war against Dahomey any more /pol/ than Norf vs Souf? It happened in rl precisely around the setting's time.
Not trying to be snarky here, I honestly thought it was in theme and don't see how it's even /pol/ related? I swear don't have a hateboner for Africans or anything, I just did a few papers on the Dahomeys in anthropology... : (
>>
>>89989138
I’m pretty much fine with it, the Dahomeys were pretty fucking horrific, but it’s a sensitive subject. Best suited to being part of a wider African lore development, so it doesn’t just seem like a race thing.
On the topic of Africa; Egypt is currently held by surviving unhusked Ottomans and ancient Egypt had ties to Atlantis somehow. Ethiopia is involved with the papacy, I believe; the Zulus are fighting as British auxiliaries; and the Dahomey kingdom being influenced by Hyperborea (Probably that shithead fox again).
Personally, I think the ancient Egypt anti-husk stuff could mean some kind of hostile contact between the pharaohs and Old Mu.
Do we have any ideas for Liberia? I feel like we could get some interesting lore out of them.
>>
>>89989516
Liberia by now is an independent country. Historically, expatriated American blacks enslaved the native population in much the same fashion as they were enslaved in the US.

Liberia has over a dozen distinct ethnic groups. One have an isolated language called Gola. Perhaps the difference from surrounding langauges is due to some mysterious influence.

The country at this time is also being heavily proselytised by American missionaries, particularly Quakers, Presbyterians and Methodists. Met with some resistance by the presently Muslim or African religious groups who were already there.

That's about all the history I know about Liberia from a quick search. They didn't have a writing system for any of their native languages until they made one in the 1830s based upon Cherokee syllabary, so there aren't too many records.
>>
>>89989516
>ancient Egypt had ties to Atlantis somehow.
>the ancient Egypt anti-husk stuff could mean some kind of hostile contact between the pharaohs and Old Mu.
Oh no, it's something much, much more than that. Egypt is old, but there are things there that are...older. Older than time itself. Still working on my Napoleon underneath the Pyramids story, but should be done soon.
>>
>>89989516
If the Zulus are working with the British, I wonder what the Boers are up to.
>>
>>89987643
Dahomey was fucking brutal. I still remember my professors gushing over the 'Warrior Queen' only for the class to grow increasingly disturbed as more students researched the tribe. Even Africans were pretty disgusted, but they were sidelined. I always got the feeling that the Aframs and Africans really have no love for each other.
>>
>>89992280
Yoruba Africa was generally barbaric as all hell.
>>
Tempted to do some writefaggotry although I haven't written anything since secondary school.
Are there entrances in Africa other than Ethiopia and Egypt? The continent is fucking enormous. Maybe one in Nigeria or the Congo?
>>
Hello Fellow Explorers, how is it going? I have been missing for the last couple threads. Does someone mind giving me a short overview of the new and exciting things, that we came up with, as a community. I see we finally tackled the American Question. This brings me joy, as they aways showed promise! It truly puzzled me how it had taken us so long to get to them, seeing how at least half of the Active gentlemen here are, may I use a slightly derogatory term, Burgers. I just hope some fine young man is writing all these fantastic ideas in the Lore Document. Not that I would be reading that go awful thing... Someone really needs to clean it up. The contents are good, I'm sure of it, but the formatting is a mess!
Also if someone could just give me the Units and their gimmicks then I would be able to create a new faction for 3e. I will be rather buys these days so don't expect much impute from me. Its no secret that I care more about Europe and balancing its wacky lore.

>Steel Driving Man: A worker unit who fucks
>Skinwalker: Appears as one unit, then switches over and starts ripping and tearing
They all start with S, weird.

So, are we good with something like this for Heroes? Top table is generic ones, every gets access to, bottom is Faction specific, 1 maximum per Hero for the Faction traits or any Traits showing on the Hero Profile itself.
Pick up to 5 Traits within those confines to build your own snowflake character.

>I wonder what the boers are up to

>No people in the world received so much verbal sympathy and so little practical support as the Boers. If I were a Boer fighting in the field-and if I were a Boer I hope I should be fighting in the field—I would not allow myself to be taken in by any message of sympathy, not even if it were signed by a hundred.
>What men they were, these Boers! I thought of them as I had seen them in the morning riding forward through the rain—thousands of independent riflemen, thinking for themselves, possessed of beautiful weapons, led with skill, living as they rode without commissariat or transport or ammunition column, moving like the wind, and supported by iron constitutions and a stern, hard Old Testament God who should surely smite the Amalekites hip and thigh.
>The Boers were singing their evening psalm, and the menacing notes—more full of indignant war than love and mercy—struck a chill into my heart, so that I thought after all that the war was unjust, that the Boers were better men than we, that Heaven was against us, that Ladysmith, Mafeking, and Kimberley would fall, that the Estcourt garrison would perish, that foreign Powers would intervene, that we should lose South Africa, and that would be the beginning of the end.
t. Winston Churchill

Yeah I'm thinking the boers don't get fucked with easily, due to the scramble for Africa being more lethargic, we get Boers who now have more guns and a fourth generation of fighters, more importantly with Leopold II being snubbed of his congo free state he'd probably finance them just to spite the great powers. So we potentially have a very heavily armed, well trained guerilla force with most likely double the manpower they had OTL due to the wars being delayed by a decade. That gives the voortrekker commandos plenty of years-long experience fighting the local tribes.

How would that actually work? Usually you can show your list at the beginning of the game to your opponent to show its legal, there's Infinity that works around it afaik but its still awkward imho.
One way I could see it work is as with the Greater Deamons in whatever edition of WHFB/40k where you rolled to summon them, and it exploded one of your models?
So you have some models allowing you to use the "It was a skinwalker all along!" action but you don't otherwise pay for him as a unit? And maybe he doesn't appear reliably, or there's a condition for him to fulfill before the end of the game or else x, y or z... ?
>>
>>90000265
I figured it would work similar to shit like goblin fanatics from AoS. You set him off to the side and pop him out of a group of units when the right conditions are met (someone got too close)
Or it could be as simple as taking an extra token that you mark out to yourself beforehand. The other guy knows you have one, just not which one of your totally disposable mooks is actually a blender waiting for the scent of blood
>>
>>90000175
They are Brazilian troops under American command as part of the PACT stuff. I see no reason they'd change uniforms.

woah, wait a second guys. You're going in half cocked here. I like cowboys and the wild west, but there's one issue; the wild west era comes after the civil war, so why do the abolitionists exist if they're redundant? We already have the mental image of the american forces being the rough riders of the spanish-american war, so what gives?
>>
>>90006141
I don't know what's going on with the US. I have never had anything to do with that 'faction'. But it seems like the US is going to have a shit-tonne of subfactions or something?

>>
>>90008164
that sentence is a bit confusing to be honest with you. Since the spanish civil war takes place both in Europe and in the 1930s, I don't see how Americans would seem different in that context. Do you mean the Lincoln brigade?

>>

Honestly a civil war where it becomes a white peace after Gettysburg ends up different could work. Instead of Robert E. Lee and his honorcuck optics leading, Nathan Bedford Forrest took command and changed the entire tactical structure. To further cause factionalism, have pic related be a dude leading guerilla cross border raids well into the late 1870s.
>>

Lads, let’s not have the literal first Grand Wizard of the KKK be an important lore character who salvaged the Confederacy.
>>

the abolitionists will literally live in a vacuum without some sort of antagonism or some element to spur them on. You wanted abolitionists, not me. I'm trying to add a reason for their existence, if you have a better one then post it, because you'll have to give some good reason how the equivalent of freedman and some middle class urbanite fringe radicals somehow got the funding and impetus to dig underground and go to agartha.

I feel like you could do the Grand wizard thing well. Considering that this isn't exaltation of the KKK. We're considering the fact that the Confederates had better access to the underground, which would've made an already difficult war for the north into a stalemate.
We could also make the south much more occult to back this up.
Instead of burning Georgia, why not have Sherman unleash some Ottoman bullshit that turns it into a Husked city?

>>90008674
CSA can still be in shambles. It could just be a much harder war for the North to win. With the southern states having pockets of resistance and slaving still. Or former CSA warlords armed with Agarthan shit that's a touch too hard to dislodge.

Thing with old Leo is that it's pretty universally agreed upon by Belgians and everyone else that he was a Bad Guy. >>
May I propose the following lore addition?
>As the Abolitionist movement grew into a proper military force following the American expansion into Agartha, it quickly came into conflict with the nascent KKK.
>Where previously the American government had little reason to bother caring about the KKK's activities, the Abolitionists quickly resorted to violent tactics to put down the organization.
>Desperate for soldiers in the constant war against the depths, this outburst of violence was tolerated and quietly swept under the rug.
>The KKK failed to get off the ground after having its core leadership slaughtered in their homes, and while it put the Abolitionists on thin ice, it proved that they were becoming a power within (and underneath) America that could not be ignored.
>But they were still needed. Down there. In the dark.
>>90009194
We need Louisiana relatively intact for Vodou purposes.
>>
>>90009133
Meh. I think we should leave well enough alone. Civil war happened more or less the same, but some Confederate remnants made way into Agartha and met various fates, hillbilly witchcraft and voodoo are real (possibly always have been, but it's more apparent now that Agartha and Hyperborea are leaking).
>>
>>90009202
Doesn't really do it for me. It feels kinda antagonistic.
Personally I don't really think we need to mention the Klan at all, I can't see them going to be going down to Agartha any time soon.

>>
>>90009240
Honestly, this is probably the best way to go about it. Some mentions of Confederates and Underground Railroaders stumbling on passages into Agartha, but other than that, it mostly played out the same as in IRL.
Not everything needs the FOX OF SHANG giving Sherman a Hyperborean SPACE DEATH LASER or something. A lot of shit prior to 1870 might have just gone exactly as it did IRL.

We could either make him a Named Character, USA only has Harriet Tubman and Illinois Jack I believe atm.
Or, alternatively, there's mention of a generic American Industrialist Hero in the unit doc, I could make a profile for it and you could just build your own Casey Jones from there.
Also, speaking of Named Characters. Possibly one of the most gimmicky character I've made. The Parley ability would be insane (against Expeditions that didn't skip on workers or Atlan) if it wasn't that most Abolitionists have shit Awareness. You spend LD to give your Abo AP through Motivational Presence and have them give her back LD through the few Parley they will succeed. Tools of Liberation should make melee a lot more viable too. Oh, also, had this idea for Dog Sleds.
I like dog sledding a lot so sorry if I'm sperging a bit here, but
> Models equipped with Dog Sleds don't gain a Movement, Skill, Evasion or Health bonus, however they ignore Rough Terrain and may take up to 10 Equipment instead of the normal 4 for a Mounted units. At the end of every Movement, a Model equipped with a Dog Sled Mount must drop a Sled Dogs token adjacent to his. These good doggos will fight to protect their charge.
Idea is that, for anyone who has done dog sledding before, after a couple of minute the dogs settle at a pretty slow pace, you are able to run beside them (I once did a trek up in the Canadian north and we hit -40C felt temperature, I spent the whole day jogging next to the dogs in full winter gear and not once felt cold). And they'll pull you through anything. Snow and ice is just the easiest, but you can harness a sled and ride it through a wood in the middle of the summer, that's how you train puppers. I've once had a musher convince me to ride on a river as it was breaking apart, I thought he was crazy but as long as the dogs didn't slow down and had some ice under their paws, it didn't matter if the sled was in water, I could ride it like a jetski. And sled dogs are notoriously protective and brutal. This is a less pleasant memory, but I had an incident where one of our lines went after a small bichon an old lady was walking next to our trail. The bichon was in 3 different chunks before anyone of us realized what was going on. Fucking brutal.
Anways.
Fuck I love dog sledding. Need to do it again soon.
