CHUNKCHUNKCHUNK *DING* Edition

>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPS A GAME.
IT IS CURRENTLY PLAYABLE.
EXPEDITION - an ~1870s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood storm hellscape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, fight each other for victory.
A campaign mode is planned, and coming closer.

3 versions of the rules exist, TWO of which have been playtested:
>1e - proof of concept, recently updated with unit stats
>2e - lead by 2e anon, playtests started, ~60% done.
>3e - Replaced 4e because it died. Spearheaded by 3e anon, needs more playtests, rules present in the doc

>What can I do?
Shitpost, meme, get comfy. Read over the docs to settle in.
Familiarize yourself with rules and plan some playtests.
Contribute if you have ideas. Give feedback on contributions if you don't.

Getting ready for a test game with a buddy this weekend.
it seems like we're gonna do British vs Atlan, second edition.

Has this matchup been done before? I can't remember if we did British vs Atlan or British vs Atlantis.
I'll be taking an Analytical Engineer so we'll get to see a new unit there at least. And it makes me very smug to know the first real test of prophecy rules won't be a Lemurian unit.

>What’s your idea of what Cromwell did?
I think what was mentioned early was that Cromwell lost the siege of Clonmel (as in rl) but way worse, and ended up fleeing up in disgrace, and half-mad. Hyperboreans took note of his singular hatred and capacity to cause Catholics and Irish pain and thought he might be a good addition to their ranks. *However, instead of ascending to the First Layer like other Historicals he ran AWOL into Agartha, digging deeper and trying to regrow his strengths in order to continue purging Ireland.*
Eventually he came to head with both Napoleon and Malcolm and when all three got into a fight took a blade in the back (I think the idea is that he inserted himself in the Napy vs Malcolm enmnity, proved he was way worse a dick than both and convinced them to work together to beat him). His defeat was compounded by the fact that he had a Memory Engine as part of his warband and got his soul sucked into it. He managed to escape from it and came back, although now he is a broken shell, devoid of personality or will. He may still lead a mindless horde of monsters reflexively or has his string pulled by the Hyperboreans completely at this point.
* * indicates stuff I'm shitposting to adapt to newer lore, but I think it holds. If there isn't much and it sounds very Marvelesque, it is kinda intended, and kinda not. The intentional part is that it is supposed to refer to early lore where things where a lot more high-profile, focused on the Big Names of the setting, and after that only it shifts more to personal expeditions non-meta stuff. And also because not everyone wanted to include Cromwell. There was already Napoleon and Malcolm and we didn't just want every big bad to be a historical big name who had discovered Agartha.

You inspired me, you beautiful soul, I will do the same and print images on hexes.
>it seems like we're gonna do British vs Atlan, second edition.
Make sure to reload Brits to 0.3, I just uploaded it with the latest weapon profiles. Atlan is on the old system for melee weapons I realize. When will you be playing? If its any time after 16 EST tomorrow I should be able to update it by then. Otherwise you can use the melee weapons from the mercenary book they would work... but not the special weapons : /

It's done! Hopefully it works well. I should be around tomorrow evening if you have questions. Stuff like terrain and wall hexes are currently mostly left to your discretion, add them or not, workers are not 100% necessary if you don't and even if there are walls, you may still get away with just troops, just not as fast.
And to answer your question,

I personally think we should have actual Martians and other aliens as, well, aliens subjugated by/warring with the Hyperboreans and potential allies/enemies for the surfacers. The Deepfolk of the Firmament, so to speak. So the "Martian" Hyperborean faction (what kind of other name would work? Technosadists? Paingineers?) could be the ones who destroyed the Martian civilization and took their technology. Tripods could be piloted by real Martians permanently encased in them, their minds broken and reduced to a robotic state by constant application of PAIN that only slightly subsides when they obey psychic orders and destroy targets.

I mean, I remember aliens being mentioned a while back as something the Hyperboreans feared, and I had a thought. If other worlds have layers, like agartha, and Hyperborea is the outermost one, then the first alien life you'd encounter upon arriving at another planet, would be that planet's equivalent of hyperborea. So, you could honestly have the alien faction be invader from another world's hyperborea, or the result of some sort of alliance (which happens exclusively because there's too many differences between th humans and the Aliens for either to get anything out of torturing the other.)

Mu found itself briefly at peace with all of its neighbors. As a consequence, this left many young Muic riders unable to pursue glory on the back of a Saur, and so they decided to explore higher layers in search of fresh prey.

>Hyperborea should be something undefinable and beyond words
>Hyperborea should be a playable faction (and thus with definable units, rules, etc)

At one point we'll have to solve the conundrum.
>>
>>90422333
Simple. Hyperborea itself is, at best, a terrain hazard. Hyperboreans are usable units and, for the most part, are relegated to the status of "freaky mercenaries following a more normal expedition around"
>>
>>90422460
Then we would still need to standardize mercenaries. I am also skeptical of liberal uses of mercenaries - we need to be parsimonious with the soup.
>>
>>90414130
mormons and jehovahs witnesses
>>
>>90422333
One other way to go about it would be to have defined units with defined lore, but a sort of authorial rule saying you have to represent Hyperborea differently every time. That way nothing is consistent by design, but we can still include them as a playable force.
>>90422460
>are relegated to the status of "freaky mercenaries following a more normal expedition around"
That could be it until we get a better feel for the faction.
>>90422758
>Then we would still need to standardize mercenaries.
If I'm not mistaken there were only 2 units of mercs for 1e, 2e has a bunch with a 50% cap rules and their own faction restrictions on most. For the most part I went for very slightly better but more specialized profiles than standard in-faction troops, at the cost of lower Discipline.
>I am also skeptical of liberal uses of mercenaries
I agree but a lot of the units have in faction synergy you won't find with Mercenaries. I don't think you are going to break this game through mixing units unless you get to the point of Napoleon. Mercs will I think be mostly useful in Campaigns when you might want to throw some dudes at an enemy you can dismiss easily afterwards, and leave your core troops fresh longer, or with the Characters & Specialist, where you add just a tiny bit of flavor to your game.
Stuff like the Speleologist we have to be careful about, but a few models "Deep Striking" isn't the end of the world.

The Armour Rating of locations are different, so (usually) if you roll a better Evasion result than the attack, even if you didn't Dodge, you'll get a better save.
However desu in this matchup its almost completely irrelevant. You both have paper thin armour and good enough guns that Armour should almost always be down to 0 or nearly there. In those cases, the ranged hit resolution becomes *real* quick.

Also my opponent's first ever wargame since they usually play dungeon crawling tabletop with me.
We definitely fucked up with equipment purchasing, ended up with more boys than we should have had I think
Terrain rules were fun to use and get with, and I liked the you-go I-go approach with model activation.

Evasion rules were confusing (We weren't sure if Grant got shot in the limbs or head, I got a 6 to hit with a skill of 6 and opponent got a 9 on evasion, which was a failure)
A lot of fun had and I definitely want to play more. I think a cowboy list or maybe an Atlantis grenadier one would be cool to try next.

Well, sprouting tentacles and grappling with them seems like a must. A heart of stone that makes one immune to morale rules? An eye that let's you see stealthed units (has anyone figured out the way to implement stealth yet?) Could also make some mechanic for taking the body parts of elite enemies for stat boosts. I think there should also be more stuff that's about transcending the limitations imposed by reality and such. Phasing through walls, bending ranged attack trajectories so you don't need LOS and ignore cover, etc.
>2) What do I go for next? Italians or Lemurians seems the most obvious, but I am opened to suggestions. We could start working on Hyperboreans too, even if its just as Mercs.
Well, the Italians already have lots of shit prepared both in 3e and the design doc.
Speaking of Italy, a minor timeline thing. Charles actually had his on plans for partitioning Italy that he discussed with Cavour, including planting a Bonaparte on the throne of the Two Sicilies. And Pius IX, as far as I know, was not entirely opposed to the idea of kicking the Austrians out. He even asked them out in 1848, albeit politely. So what if the Crusade against the Duosicilians in 1851 was actually pitched to the Pope and Sardinia by Charles as a way to secure the Two Sicilies for a pro-French king? The idea being to lay the groundwork for the expulsion of Austrians from Italy and implement the rest of his plan. Since they'd still fail it's largely inconsequential, but it would give a very serious reason for Austria not to participate. That way, we can kill off Franz Joseph later, in 1853 with an actual historical assassination attempt, instead of awkwardly squishing in his death and Maximilian's ascension right before the Crusade.
>>

This makes a lot of sense within the lore itself right now since Charles ended up stepping down from politics as a result of the Crusade failing. Before it was more just the whiplash of the failure making him unelectable but if he's the mind behind the Crusade and it culminated in the Fall of Rome and the Pope's exile, you can see how a lot of folks would turn against him.

Oh also, there was mention early on that the Gorg's thing might be knocking back/pushing models with attacks.
Should I include a basic "push" action in, maybe have a way to wrap it into a charge action instead of doing damage, and give Gorgs a bonus to it so its more reliable/effective (bonus to the test to see if you knockback and/or bonus to how far it knockbacks)?

An eye that let's you see stealthed units (has anyone figured out the way to implement stealth yet?) Could also make some mechanic for taking the body parts of elite enemies for stat boosts. I think there should also be more stuff that's about transcending the limitations imposed by reality and such. Phasing through walls, bending ranged attack trajectories so you don't need LOS and ignore cover, etc.
Thanks a lot that's great inspiration!

1) The rules to survive entering Magma hexes will be on the Asbestos Suit, the Board will also include the "spend 1AP to set as Cover" and a bonus movement for going on Magma tiles.
2) There are currently no rules for Fire damage in 2e, usually in these wargames its a conditions that either expires or does damage each turn, is that what I should go for?
3) I realize now the term in the doc is "volcanic" terrain instead of "magma", should I stick with that?

Worked in a Climb action into the "Uncommon Actions" of the rule's doc, will add pictures to it too to explain the process.
I made it so that you need a special rule or Climbing Gear to do it. It allows you to enter a Wall hex as long as its adjacent to a non-wall hex. Will in one you can only move 1 per AP and to another Wall adjacent to an open hex or out of a Wall hex. You are considered visible while so. You have to succeed a Str test, and if you fail while in a Wall, you fall into the adjacent open hex.

Worked a bit on the Duosicilians today.
1) In regards to adding Fire Damage to the game, I was thinking we could make it a simple test where a model affected by it must Save on all its Locations, and for each Location save take / (although in this case the Severity increases per additional saves lost instead of doing a second and third /).
2) Also, a few abilities from the Duosicilians refers to Sacrifice as a way to reset them. I was thinking that we could wrap all of those together into a type of ability (call it Volcanic Favour for example). Using any of those you have access to means you can't use the others until you do a Sacrifice. I hesitate to allow Sacrifice to be turned into a Pool because I think it makes it more strategically interesting to have to plan correctly, but ymmv... and having a Pool could allow some "this ability requires 3 Sacrifice to be used etc etc)"
3) For Volcanic Terrain, I went with : Passable, Difficult Terrain, May be Voluntarily Move into, but if you end a Movement in one you have to take Fire Damage. Does that work?
4) We need Leadership Abilities for Pepe and probably a few other models.
>>

To the anon who made the Duosicilians, are all the units in the Units doc? I seem to remember some names I don't see there, I'm starting to wonder if I'm not going by another list than the latest one you made.
> Guglielmo
> Bersaglieri
> Alpini
> Carabinieri
> Arditi
> Janara Hag

> Royal Magma Riders
> Magma Mining Crew
> Ask-Marked Slaves
Is that it? I feel like I'm missing a bunch.
>>
>>90471915
>>90473349
The ones in the unit design doc are just something I've tried to adapt from the ideas for Italian units posted in the thread (Magmade Ritualist etc.), so any "mechanics" they have may very well be not worth keeping. In any case the idea was to try and make terrain control and sacrifices into a gimmick. The units Tripbro made are in the 3e doc and seem better designed since they had a concrete system in mind. We could probably work something out to combine the best ideas.
For example, his 'Cackle" feature for the Janara spellcasting would allow to circumvent the potentially tedious tracking that would be required for adding/removing volcanic tiles. So maybe instead of them having duration, have them stay on the board for one turn, but allow extending the duration indefinitely by 'Cackling'? Lots of material there to work with.
>1)
First thing that comes in mind is how will Fire affect the simple health track models? A simpler, but not necessarily better method would be to just implement some sort of resistance system, where some types of damage are harder to roll Armor saves against, unless you have the specific resistance.
>2)
So you have a max 1 sacrifice at the time, but any units with such abilities can spend this point? I don't really have any objections to that.
>3)
Pretty much what I had in mind.
>4)
For Pepe, how about something like
>'Flames of Revolution' - Targeted friendly unit is filled with explosive revolutionary fervour and becomes immune to morale rules. It can be commanded to explode in an AOE fire attack and will do so automatically if it is slain or 3 turns pass.
>>
>>90474497
thanks for this, will look into them.
>>
>>90474497
>the simple health track models
It actually works better for simple health track models. Its not "take a / to each of the locations on which you failed", its "test for each location, take 1 wound of varying severity based on how many locations failed".
Not sure if its viable I was just thinking of a way to differentiate it really.

Got some work done on the Italians. Regarding the Sacrifice thing they've got going on, here is what I went with. Blanket special rule for the whole faction.

Special Action “Sacrifice” (1 AP) : Contrary to other Factions, Duosicilians may be able to target the members of their own Expeditions with Attacks in order to sacrifice them to the Volcano Spirits. Leaders and Characters in your Expedition may all use this Action by default (other models may do so thanks to a special rule ex : Carabinieri).
If the target is a Friendly model, before resolving the Attack, test the Target model’s Discipline. If successful, the model is immediately killed. If failed, resolve an Attack as usual but your opponent rolls for the target model’s Defense and Armour Saves.
This action may also target enemy models if they are currently on a Volcanic Terrain hex. If so, resolve this action as you would any other Melee & Ranged Attack or Charge Action. You may also retroactively declare that any Action causing an enemy model to forcefully end a Movement in a Magma hex counts as a Sacrifice (no additionnal AP needs to be spent).
The Sacrifice is only successful if the target model is killed or removed from play as a result.

BTW Tripbro the compound effect of many of the rules is pretty darn OP. Only way I see to balance this is to otherwise make the units themselves have pretty mediocre stats. So, this ain't me having some hateboner for Italians.

and the Comandante, which is incomplete. It needs at least one more Leadership Ability.
Also, Tripbro, for the Appanage rule, in 2e all models can take 2 Equipment by default, 2 Weapons and 1 Mount. Equipment refers to Rations, Material for Construction, Torches, etc. I assume you want the Appanage to be a bit more badass than just `he`s able to take one more Ration than usual``.
So, am I right to think this would translate well into
> This model may purchase one additional Weapon or Equipment from any Colonial Faction list.
?
Also, I'm not there yet, but looking forward to the Janara Magic rule system, the Compact of Doors rule... I don't really see a point to having it be a simple restriction to Recruitment rules (besides forcing you to pay for redundancy). But we could make it into something which has a bit of strategic impact pretty easily by turning it into a bonus to the casting test if you have an even number of models with the rule. That way there's at least something going on dynamically, you can always recruit an uneven number but if we make the bonus high enough its going to turn into a question of keeping an even number alive (with the added hilariousness that sometimes you might want to throw an initiate in a Magma hex to keep things even).
Your thoughts?
>>
>>90485802
For the Comandante's additional abilities, I'm thinking we could use the same mechanic as Ammuina (wtf does that mean btw?), meaning the "cost +1 AP each time", and have another Action/Passive which resets the AP counter... ?
>>
>>90474497
>For example, his 'Cackle" feature for the Janara spellcasting would allow to circumvent the potentially tedious tracking that would be required for adding/removing volcanic tiles.
That's one thing I was going to remove pretty immediately as soon as I saw it. Was just going to make them permanent, but now that I'm getting a better idea of how much they will spawn, maybe the Cackle thing will work.
I was gonna go with just "make them permanent, but not common enough that you can spam them all over the place, and if maybe you can, then you still would end up Sacrificing ~1/2 your Expedition to do so."
Not sure now.

So I've been thinking of working more on the map and I have to ask: have we actually settled on where the Alph is? The doc has a brainstorming section with Tigris, Orkhon and others suggested, but it was never made clear. Also how should it work? Should it just be a series of rivers on different Layers that flow like normal rivers flowing into the sea, but allow you to sail them into a different Layer somehow? Maybe it could flow upwards and end up in the Hazar lake, source of the Tigris, or whatever we settle on. Should it also flow into Hyperborea somehow, so it flows through literall ALL the Layers?
>>
>>90490932
>have we actually settled on where the Alph is?
No, I don't think so. We haven't really talked about geography that much lately, thanks for bringing it up.
There are already one or two downward waterway path that mentions ecluses I think. Otherwise the descent slope could be just flat enough that it is practicable, and wrap around huge regions of the Layers and the crust sections.
I don't see any reason (I mean, beside physics, which we shouldn't care too much about anyways) that we couldn't have upwards waterway too. Just some of those cases of physics not making much sense in Agartha.

>Should it also flow into Hyperborea somehow, so it flows through literall ALL the Layers?

Also, we never settled on Lady Guenevievre's role as a model. Initially she was thought up as a mostly useless character/leader for Mercs which would work as a mediocre buffer for Knight of Britannia troops (she was just a pretty girl wearing medieval dresses and convincing horny college students to go on Expeditions with her). Mercs (or Brits) don't really have a "tankish" leader so giving her heavy armor could work.

Honestly? I kinda like the idea that some of the Hyperborean soldiers are just... militia. Random dudes that get called up one day to raid the World Below, and go along with it because it's a source of free PAIN, and not going along with it gets you shot. There's something extra horrific about the idea that some of the most horrific things any soldier could ever encounter, are just the average joes of the Hyperboreans. They've not even brought out the really big guns yet.

The way I envisioned when writing it was either a gradual descent down the layers through "tunnels" which can't be accessed except through the Alph, or a more metaphysical/magical thing where after a while you'd find yourself on one of the lower layers without noticing any transition. Or perhaps, at the borders between layers, there's a series of dangerous rapids with monsters and other things lurking below the water, waiting for any unwary traveller to pass them by...
