Whack

"Ow" You say.
"That makes 5" Pip says.

You rub the back of your head, where Pip smacked you with her wooden sword. You were so sure you'd be able to see her coming that time...

She keeps darting out of where you can see her. You can never manage to turn fast enough, and once you lose her, she's gone.

"One more time" You say.
"It's not gonna happen" Pip says. "You'll end up with a concussion at this rate"
"I almost had you there" You say. "One more time"

Derrick sighs and steps over to you. "Yuu... you're going about this wrong" He says.
"I am?" You ask.

Derrick turns back to the others. "Give us a second, Yuu needs a few pointers" He says.
"I do?" You ask.
"You do" Derrick says. "You rely on your eyes too much. She's using that to her advantage"
"But I have good eyes" You say.
"Not good enough for this..." Derrick says as he pulls out a length of thick fabric. "Trust me. I've done this before. This will help"

He holds the fabric up, like he's going to cover your eyes with it.

...

Oh. That's what he's doing.

You nod and relax as Derrick covers your eyes and ties the blindfold behind your head.

"Now, use your ears" He says. "Pip's quiet, but she isn't silent. If you keep your ears open you'll get some warning before she strikes"

"How much warning?" You ask.
"Enough... hopefully" He says "I'll give you 3 more rounds and then I'm calling this before you do get a concussion, okay?"
"Okay" You say.
"Oh, and if you do manage to hit her, try not to hit her too hard. I know she hasn't shown you the same consideration, but Pip's not made of the sturdiest stuff"

"I heard that!" Pip calls out.
"It's not like he's wrong" Lulu says. "Remember what happened last time you 'n Rhea went at it?"
"Rhea's not a good example. I've seen you crumple from her punches too" Pip says.
"Yeah, but I don't pull 'em against Lu" Rhea says.
"That was pulled? You broke like... all of my ribs!" Pip says.

"Got it" You say, having grown bored of the banter.

"Alright, he's good to go" Derrick says.

"Show us what you've got!" Ilica shouts
"I will!" Pip says.
"I wasn't talking to you..." Ilica replies.

You stand in the center of the courtyard, or at least you think it's the center... either way, it's where Derrick put you. Central or not, Pip is coming.

You know this because she said 'here I come'... and then you heard nothing.

...

Still nothing. You're focused on listening, kinda. It's hard tp pick out the the important noises from the background. You hear the other knights talking with each other, Ilica teasing Emi about something, Ariadne humming a tune up in her web, light footsteps approaching from the left, Derrick talking with Ti-

"Ow" You say.

"That makes 6~" Pip says. "You sure he's good to go? He doesn't seem very good to go"
"Keep going. 2 more rounds, and I call it" Derrick says.
"Alright..." Pip says. You hear her stepping back to where she started. "Here I come!"

This time you're focused. You know what to listen for.

Pip waits a few moments to strike, but when she does you hear it. She's coming in from behind you, to the right.

You set your feet, turn, and swing. Your blade definitely connects with something, and you hear a surprised squeak.

Excited, you raise your blindfold off one eye and look around... and then down, to see Pip curmpled up on the floor.

"Ow" She says.

She really IS fragile. Speed is great, but if you go down like a ton of bricks, after one hit, well, you can't afford to get cocky.

A lesson that, it would seem, she's just been reacquainted with.
>>
Yikes, all that and she got oneshotted? Maybe we can learn from each other.
>>
You reach down to offer her your hand. "That makes one" You say.
Pip scowls as she accepts your help. "Smartass" She says.

The others watching approach the two of you as you help her to her feet. Her arm never leaves her side, and she doesn't stand up straight.

"Are you alright?" You ask.
"Nothing that hasn't happened before" Pip says, "I'll get Rhea or Jade to look after it..."

Emi slithers up to her. "I can take a look"
Pip backs away from Emi. "Noooo thank you" She says. "No offense, but snakes aren't my favourite kinda people"
"Ah... I understand" Emi says.
"You seem fine with cats" You say.
"Cats like your friend there don't bother me. They're mostly harmless" Pip says. "I've run into some bad snakes in my day... so don't take it personally"

You put a hand on Emi's shoulder. "But Emi is a good snake" You say. "She's nice, she's really good at making pain go away, and she gives hugs with her entire body"

"Sounds like you've got yourself a fan" Pip says.
Emi's face reddens, and she giggles. "Yuu is like that" Emi says.

"Need me to fix that for you Pip?" Rhea asks.
"Nah, I'll take it to Jade" Pip says. "You guys can keep going here. I'll come back down when I feel better"
"Need a hand getting up there?" Derrick asks.
"Nah, I'll be fine" Pip says. "Thanks for the offer though, Ricky"

Pip heads out of the courtyard, and once she's gone you turn back to Derrick. "What now?" You ask.
"I guess we keep going" Derrick says.

"Nobody?" He asks.
"Why not you?" You ask.
"Me?" He asks. "What have I got to show you that they can't?"

Lulu steps up and puts a wooden sword in his hand.

"Really?" He asks. "You're miles better with a sword than I am"
"No I'm not" Lulu says. "Besides, he needs to actually learn how to fight with a sword"

"I do?" You ask.
Lulu nods. "Your instincts are solid, and you've got some natural talent... but you clearly have no idea what you're doing"
"Oh..." You say. "Is it that bad?"

"Nothing Ricky can't fix" Lulu says, giving Derrick a hard pat on the back. "Show him your stuff"

Derrick sighs. "If you say so..."

Derrick takes up his stance, so you do the same.

"Ready?" He asks.
"Probably" You reply.

Derrick nods, and advances. With his final step, he makes a quick slash at your chest.

You're barely quick enough to guard, and you're forced to back off as he steps in again with another strike.

It's like clockwork. Step, strike, step, strike. The rhythm of it is predictable, but you never know where he's going to hit next. You see no chance to turn the tables either, so you're left to backpedal and desperately defend.

Until you hit the wall.

With nowhere else to back up to, Derrick puts his wooden sword up to your chest...

Rolled 61 (1d100)

You step forward, causing the tip of Derrick's wooden sword to press painfully into your chest.

Then you swing your sword, giving him one good whack to the shoulder before he can react.

But he does react. Stepping back and swinging his sword upward, he smacks your wrist and knocks your sword into the air. Then with two hands he strikes your shoulder, before spinning and taking you out at the knees.

Then, for effect, he catches your sword as it falls and puts them both to your neck.

"Ow" You say.
"This time I've got you" He says.
"Yeah, I give" You say. "Sorry about that. I saw the chance and I took it"

"In a normal fight that never would have worked" He says, as he offers you your sword, and then a hand to help you up.
"I disagree" You say. "With real swords that would have worked even better"

Derrick furrows his brow. "What do you mean?" He asks.
"Well your sword would have gotten stuck in my chest" You say. "It wouldn't have killed me where you put it, so I would have been the one with 2 swords"

"It would have hurt" He says.
"But I would survive" You say. "And I'd get your sword"

Derrick stops to consider your words. "That's... actually true" He says.
"But again... sorry" You say.
"Don't be" He says. "It's an important lesson, especially if we're going to be dealing with demons. I've heard that a clever demon will exploit their lack of a weak point there... I guess I never expected it"

"Well then you're welcome" You say.
"Don't get so smug" He says. "Your footwork is terrible, you have no idea how to parry properly, you let your off hand hang like a broken tree branch, and that last strike was sloppy"

"That bad?" You ask.
"Let's just say that there's a lot of room for improvement" He says. "Come on, let's see if we can't work some good habits into you..."

You spend the next several hours getting schooled.

Derrick shows you a few ways to improve your swordsmanship, gets you to practice it for a bit, then gets you to use it in practice. And by 'in practice' you mean he shows you how it helps by beating you a little less hard...

It does give you a new appreciation for swordplay... and you have no idea why Derrick thinks he's worse than Lulu.

Sure, Lulu spent the better part of 4 hours beating you up. But you could defend, you could find openings, you could fight.

You see no such openings against Derrick.

While Lulu fought with a ferocity that made it hard to beat, it's clear that Derrick needs no such thing. Every move is smooth, and each one flows into the next.

In comparison to how you fight... well... you have a long way to go.

"I think that's enough for now" Derrick says.
"I can keep going" You say.
"If you really want to keep going, then we can continue either after dinner or tomorrow morning" He says. "Either way, I'm starving"

"Taking a food break?" Tian asks.
"I guess" You say.
"Where are you guys planning on eating?" She asks.

"Dining hall" Derrick says. "Why?"
"Ari and I were gonna head down to the Hunter's Guild to see how Hella's holding up. I was wondering if any of you wanted to join us" She says.

"Me too" Ilica says. "I feel kinda bad for dragging her out of her home like we did..."

"Just you guys?" Tian asks.
"Yeah" Emi says. "I'm going to go meet this 'Jade'. I think I might be able to learn a bit from her as well"

"Alright, now if Ariadne will just come down then we can go" Tian says.
"Awwww maaaan!" Ariadne says.
"What do you mean 'aww man'? Did you think you'd be able to stay up there and go to the guild?"
"I could make a web all the way there!" Ariadne says.

"No you couldn't" Tian says.
"I totally could" Ariadne says.
"You'd run out of silk before you even got out of this courtyard. Now get down" Tian says.

Ariadne grumbles something as she lowers herself down from her web and skitters over to where Tian is.

"Much better. Ready to go?" Tian asks.
"Could totally web up this whole town if I tried..." Ariadne grumbles.
"I'll take that as a yes" Tian says. "Let's go"

As you leave the courtyard, you turn to Tian.

"So, how am I doing?" You ask.
"Not too shabby" Tian says. "Derrick is right about your swordplay, though. It needs work"
"Yeah..." You say.

"But I was impressed that you managed to nab the mouse on your second go with the blindfold" She says. "And while I missed most of the fight, 4 hours against a wolf is nothing to scoff at"

"I could have kept going, but my legs weren't cooperating" You say.
"That's what she was going for, dingus" Ilica says. "If it was just about stamina, she could have picked up an axe and chased you around the courtyard"

"So what was it about?" You ask.
"Endurance" Tian says. "Few people can go an entire battle without getting hit a few times. It's about rolling with the hits you take, and continuing the fight regardless"

"But of course, it's probably best not to get hit" Ilica says.
"Which is why your swordplay needs work" Tian says.
"I'm working on it" You say.

"Wars would be so much easier if everyone could shoot web" Ariadne says. "Then they would be decided by whoever could still move by the end"

"That sounds messy" You say.
"So is a normal battle" Tian says.
"Good point"

Could you imagine an army, with every soldier having the abilities of Spider Man?

"And that's why the world would be better if everyone lived in webs!" Ariadne says, finishing her long winded lecture as you reach the guild hall.

"That's... fascinating" You say, unsure of how to respond.
Tian bops Ariadne on the head. "That's a bunch of nonsense" Tian says.

"Yeah, what if it rains?" Ilica asks. "You gonna web yourself a roof? Maybe some walls and insulation to keep warm in the winter?"

"Obviously it's not a final plan" Ariadne says. "It has some kinks to work out..."
"Like the whole plan?" Ilica asks. "Because the whole plan is a kink"

Ariadne crosses her arms. "Well I think it's a great plan" She says.
"Keep tellin' yourself that Spidey" Ilica says. "Us sane people will continue to live in houses"

You enter the guild hall while Ariadne pouts, only to find it empty.

You turn back to Tian. "Is this normal?"

"Not really..." Tian says. "Normally there'd be someone manning the desk, even if everyone was eating"

You walk slowly into the guild hall, up to the desk. There, you peek over and check behind it.

"BAH!"

You jump back and try to process what you just saw, as the person behind the desk crawls up on top of it.

It's a little bunny. Like... really little. She clumsily climbs up onto the top of the desk, babbling incoherently the whole time.

"Is that normal?" You ask.
Ilica steps forward to look at the little bunny. "Wooow... they start 'em this young, huh?"

The little bunny flashes you a proud smile, apparently finished with her speech.

"No, they do not" Tian says. "I think this is Daniella's idea of a joke..."
"Who's Daniella?" You ask. "It's... it's not her is it?"
"No it is not the baby" Tian says.

"Hey there cutie" Ilica says. "Where's your mommy?"
In response, the bunny begins babbling again.

"Just a minute!" Another voice calls from behind the desk, before another rabbit comes out carrying a stool over her head. She runs up behind the desk and puts the stool down, then stands up on it. "Welcome to the hunter's guild, how can I help you?"

"Wow, you're right Ilica. They do start young" You say. "How old are you?"
"Seven" The little bunny says. "And a half..."

Ilica steps up to the counter. "And what's your name?" She asks.
"Gabriella" She says.
"Gabriello" You say.

The little bunny does not look amused, but the littler bunny does try to grab Ilica's ears... though you don't think that was in response to your joke.

"Okay kiddo, not the ears" Ilica says.
The rabbit giggles.

"So how can I help you?" Gabriella asks.
"Right! I was wondering if Hella was here" You say.

Gabrielly looks confused. "This is Hella" She says, pointing to the littler bunny.
"But Hella is... she was..." You say. "How did she get so tiny?"

"I don't think that's the same Hella..." Tian says.
"But what if it was?" You ask. "What if the rabbits never change, they just keep reverting back to babies?"
"That's ridiculous" Ilica says, before little Hella grabs one of her cheeks.

"There you are Hella!" Another rabbit says as she comes out of a door to the side. This one looks like she's about Tian's age. "I told you to stay in the shrinking chamber until the process was finished!"
