This will be a slow one so take your time, I plan to update irregularly. It's a pet project on the side of my other quest. On the upside, posts will be well thought out and of high quality.

---------------------------------------------------------------

“It is on this day, the 56th Year of the reign of Her Majesty Elizabeth the Thirteenth, by the Grace of God, Queen of the United Systems of Novus Londinium and her other Systems, Realms and Territories, Protector of the August Commonwealth and Defender of the Faith-“

Your knee is starting to hurt. The Herald, adorned in the latest fashion of two centuries ago, doesn’t show any sign of stopping. It isn’t as though Her Majesty Herself is here to present these titles and holdings upon you and the dozen other formally adorned men (and one woman) currently bending the knee. It’s some second-cousin or other currently sitting in an austere little chair at bottom of the throne’s dais, a minor royal you don’t even recognize.

As the Herald’s voice echoes throughout the gilded room, you can’t help but feel…

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Solemn. Tradition is important, it’s not every day someone is granted a planet. Such an occasion should observe the formalities.

Impatient. The paperwork was all sorted out days ago, this tedious ceremony is a waste of everyone’s time.

You hear a handful of the other’s shuffle slightly, clearly your knees are not the only ones beginning to ache, but you and the rest remain firm. There’s a difference between signing a piece of paper for a planet and reaffirming your oaths to the Commonwealth and the Queen. The momentousness of this occasion is not lost on you.

”With the blessings of the Astra-Anglican Church, the Crown bestows upon you these titles; that you may serve as members of this most August Commonwealth, that you may be Her Majesty’s most humble representative on these worlds, that you may grow, that you may prosper, that you may hold fast to the Commonwealth and answer her call in times of need. That you may-“

You know the words well enough, it’s a formalization of the contract you signed with the AEGIS Corp and representatives of the Crown. You can have your independence, but you must remain part of the Commonwealth. You can do what you like with your planet, so long as you pay back your debt. You can form whatever military you like, so long as you answer the call to arms. So many prizes, so many strings attached.

Still, you have come a long way. You would never have dreamed of seeing yourself here some 40 years ago. Back when you were…

---------------------------------------

An arrogant adolescent Blueblood. For the longest time you thought impulsive duels and daring social capers was all there was to life. You learnt.

A nervy young Recruit. Winning glory in the August Commonwealth’s many wars is every young boys dream. You still have the scars.

A starved juvenile Refugee. You remember exactly what it felt like to go hungry, the things you had to do for your next meal. You’ll never forget.

You do not share the pale complexion of the majority of your fellow knee-benders, them being almost all Novus Londinium born or near enough. You instead bear the swarthy, cocoa shade of skin common to those native to Calaxis.

There wasn’t much of a Calaxis Minor left after the Auxl Incursion. You remember the eerily beautiful glare of the orbital lances, the desperation and fear in everyone’s eyes as the bombardment began. You didn’t lose your family to the bombardment, or to the high-calibre slugs of the Auxl Strike Troops, at least you don’t think so, it was the mad push of the crowd that separated you. Millions of people rushing to any ship getting off-world, and somehow you landed on one them. Apparently the Auxl Fleets didn’t even bother intercepting the thousands of ships fleeing the Calaxis system, they wanted your people to spread terror throughout the human territories.

Nowhere was keen to accept the millions of Calaxis refugees with open arms, eventually the ships had to ditch their human cargo somewhere. Even the most philanthropic of captains could only promise a relatively civilized location. During those years you had to do things, terrible things, just for a bite to eat. You’ll never go back to that, you have had to claw your way to every bit of wealth, rank and influence and if anyone plans on taking it away from you they can pry it from your cold dead hands.

Those were hard years, lean years. Tough times for such a young...

Her Majesty did not ignore the affront of the razing of Calaxis, or at least Her Majesty didn’t ignore the threat it posed to the rest of the Commonwealth. Vassals were called up, the Leviathian Legio summoned and Oaths of Allegiance reminded, and eventually the military might of that vast human empire called the August Commonwealth responded to the Auxl in kind. The war was long. Very long. You grew from child to juvenile during that war, signing up at the soonest opportunity when the recruiters were desperate enough for manpower to buy your lies about your age.

You had your revenge. You had it in spades. It was a long war after all, by the end of it you were a fully-fledged…

Drop Infantry Commander. The best weapons, the hardest missions and the biggest balls. Leaping from the swooping Assault Dropships into hell, you commanded the toughest sons-of-bitches in the Commonwealth.

Naval Commodore. Some of the Commonwealth’s mightiest weapons were at your command, you had the power to scour planets given enough time and ammunition. With 3 ships and some 900 souls you left a trail of Auxl wreckage in your wake.

Merchant Prince. It’s amazing what a bit of swashbuckling and privateering can result in. But you didn’t make your real fortune in being were the enemy was. You made it by getting much needed resources to where the enemy wasn’t.

Leviathan Pilot. You have known what it is to be a God, tasted the primal rage of a Leviathan’s animalistic AI, a striding colossus of fire and fury. None could stand before you, where you walked cities burnt.

It's closer to the Princeps of a Titan from 40k. Leviathans choose their masters, it's weird symbiotic-relationship between man and bestial-AI that the Astro-Anglican Church frowns heavily upon.

The Leviathan Legio is the also only body that answers to summons from the Queen alone.

The August Commonwealth is fairly egalitarian as far as gender is concerned, though that varies throughout the territories. Discrimination is generally saved up for the non-human minorities.

The lowborn refugee bit will be far more of an impediment than what's between your legs.

You would still have to pay for it out of your starting assets at a reduced rate, same as you would for the Naval ships, Merchant Fleet or cohort of hardened Drop Troops.

You could still start with a Leviathan even if you didn't select that career path, but it would be less likely to see you as compatible.

Completely homebrew, mate.

The start of humanity's expansion into space began well enough. All the major players left at the end of the 21st century had assets all over the solar system and beyond. The United States of North America, the South American Alliance, the Chino- Conglomerate (By then mostly a corporation), the League of African Nations and the United Kingdom of England and France Turns out leaving the EU was the best decision the UK ever made.

It was good times for humanity, barring the occasional brushfire war over a particularly juicy colony. Then after not one, but -two- awful and costly interstellar wars that lasted decades each, humanity found that it lost Earth but had managed toppled what passed as the Galactic Council at the time.

During those rough years the various territories and struggling systems came under the sway of one charismatic and powerful individual, who lead humanity out of it's darkest hour and into the galactic spotlight. Oh and that someone (a distant relative of the British Crown) decided it was a good idea to reinstall the Monarchy to their full power. That was 300 years ago.

Sure thing, the August Commonwealth has some 500 of them, and twice that amount of other holdings such as minor moons, asteroid, or free floating stations.

Fully Terraformed planets where the atmosphere is breathable are rare though, less than 10%. That kind of process takes generations.

Ciridilus (sirrr-ee-dil-us)

System; Kathmandu cluster

Capital; Banbroko

Population; 500,000

Orbital period; 25 Earth days

Climate; Fucking cold

A cold tundra planet on the outskirts of August Commonwealth territory, bearing upon it’s surface the sprawling metropolis of Banbroko.

The planet is special in that is has fully breathable oxygen, albeit a bit thinner akin to the heights of Mount Everest.
The planet itself is encased in ice, (much like the sol system’s
“Uranus” was in 2068 at the end of the Forlorn Conflict), and presented many problems for the August Commonwealth colonisation efforts, namely how to provide food for the inhabitants of the colony.

The first settlement on the planet was the aptly named “station Madhesh”, and resembled more of a small mining settlement until private colonial backers began funding shipments to the planet from the nearby Dheli system.

The planet prospered when in 2334, a rare element of Gladiatium was found beneath the surface, attracting even more Private and Commonwealth support for the colony akin to a Gold rush.

The Colony is still within it’s prime and it’s leaders growing ever more content with the stream of wealth flowing through the system.

Vladivostok Prime

System; Gruppa krovi System

Capital; none (formerly Cyka Vebinostu)

Population; 900 (Formerly 70,000 before Commonwealth bombardment)

Orbital period; 27 Earth hours

Climate; Radioactive shithole would not step in (swamp-like carbon monoxide environment before Commonwealth bombardment

The Auxl’s first and only attempt at colonisation within a nearby system was a complete disaster.
Between toxic plantlife to raider parties from nearby systems, it seemed that the colony was doomed from the start, until the Auxl gave the colonists an entire garrison of soldiers, Air-to-Space cannons and 3 dreadnoughts.
The raiders were destroyed or routed, the planet received regular supplies from the Auxl Hierarchy and all seemed to be going fine until the August Commonwealth started colonising nearby moons and planets in the same system.
Ever the diplomats, the Commonwealth sent an envoy down to the planet to discuss terms of a peaceful coexistence within the system, to stop any aggression before it takes place.

The Auxl’s was open to negotiations, but they wanted the bases and colonies already inhabited by Commonwealth citizens, to which the diplomats refused outright.
The diplomats body was sent back to the Commonwealth delegation in a stew pot made filled with piss.
Angered by the display of gratuitous violence, HRM Theodora the fifth, ordered the colony destroyed by the Royal Spaceborne Navy, to which almost 120,000 men and women were lost to in the ensuring bombardment.

All that is left of the planet’s former inhabitants are the decrepit husks of Cyka Vebinostu.

The Aurualian expanse is a cluster of uninhabited planets surrounded by a highly volatile nebula.
The expanse and planets themselves are unremarkable as Commonwealth probes indicate that the planets are hollow, with only a few thousand kilometres of pure dirt holding the planetary bodies together.
The remarkable thing about the Aurualian expanse is it’s presence in many folk legends as the Resting place of Pirate raider “Commodore kilkulin’s” hidden treasure.
At one point, a lord Garrick Harrow of house Battalia went on to hunt for the famed raider’s hidden treasure, only to be crushed by the planet X14u’s gravity.
Due to this incident and the death of an esteemed gentleman, the expanse has been declared off limits to Commonwealth citizens.

The planet of Husky 7 is a garden world in the interior of Commonwealth space.
Regarded more as a hunting destination for prosperous lords and tradesmen alike than a future planet spanning metropolis within commonwealth society, Husky 7 is owned primarily by the WSU Conglomerate.

Discovered in 2138 by famed explorer, Butch T Cougar, The planet hosts multiple hunting lodges dotting the planet, for the rich elite to enjoy during their visits to the planet.

XZ45i (Commonwealth designation)/Zion (local name)

System; Zulu 79 (Commonwealth designation)/The empty sea (local name)

Capital; Outpost Bravo 14 (commonwealth)/ Sheridan (local)

Population; 415

Orbital period; 55 earth years

Climate; Absolutely fucking cold, manmade atmosphere enveloping single settlement.

A rare case of secession actually working, the colony of Zion elected to separate from the August Commonwealth in 2388, under the pretence of expressing their religious freedom.
Heralds, as the colonists came to be known, held tightly to their so called “god given land” that they rejected commonwealth technology, electing to use only old earth technology to survive.

At the time of the secession, Her Majesty’s fleets were otherwise engaged with the Auxl in the gruppa krovi system.
Unable to order the colony destroyed, Theodora the Fifth elected to let them go, under the pretense that the Commonwealth would be able to maintain an outpost on the planet’s surface.

Tensions between the Heralds and the Commonwealth had been steady until just a few months before the story takes place, a Herald murdered a Commonwealth Lord’s daughter in an altercation about a wig maker’s bill

it would have been too easy to call the colonists “Zionists”

The “Sargent Shultz” cluster is a combination of stars and nebulae gas particals condensing into the orbit of the planetary body “Klinkerhoffen”.
The effect this cluster has upon the planet is absolutely devastating, with winds gusting up to 500kph and heat reaching absolutely insane proportions, but despite all this, A Commonwealth outpost is maintained 20 km below the planets surface.
There used to be 2 outposts maintained upon the planet, but the second one was destroyed when a newly arrived Colonial Commander of the kinchlo garrison complained about the heat and ordered his second to open a window.

I just don't believe that a refugee/enlisted can become anything other than brawn man... so the genetic compatibility thing helps.

And brawn man probably gets a planet that has some kind of rebellious or dangerous background, so our Leviathan can hold the breach if things don't go peaceful.

Man, Naval Commodore. The 2nd Burlensk Offensive was a bad time for the August Commonwealth. Poorly planned, poorly supplied and poorly led. Things got desperate, desperate enough that a newly-minted Ensign ended up taking command of a half-blasted ship to lead the counter-attack that salvaged the battle.

I will not count votes that do not have dice-rolls attached.

Since buying an 'Hastati Class' Leviathan will be an option from our assets, would anons prefer that it is our old warmachine during the Auxl Incursion or a different one? There are pros and cons to either one.

You remember that moment, the feeling of something greater than yourself regarding you. The Legio Adepts attending that vast behemoth virtually swarmed your commanding officer mid-march in their efforts to discern just whom the Hastati Class Leviathan had chosen. You remember the primal roar of the machine reverberating through your body, your mind, perhaps your soul. Instead of being just another nameless body in the muck of the 2nd Burlensk Offensive you were a Legio Pilot. You were the one that struck down the Auxl Colossi Bren’Vxl and his brothers. You were the one that held Danchim Pass against their armies not once, but thrice. During those years, those long, bloody years, you and your Leviathan become as one.

In those final days of the war, as you tore the cities of the Auxl Homeworld asunder, you felt nothing but…

------------------------------------------------------------------

Satisfaction. Revenge, at last, was yours. And the taste of it was oh so sweet. The bloodlust they warned you about in the Legio Scholarium did not come from your Leviathan this time, but from you.

Regret. Revenge had lost its appeal after the first massacre, let alone the third. The armies of the Auxl were long destroyed, nothing stood before you but their younglings and womenfolk. There was no honour in this.

Anticipation. Your mind wasn’t really on the array of target indications and weapon tracking, nothing that could hurt you was firing back anyway. You were already thinking about after the war, what you could do. What you could build.

Twenty-Three years you had been fighting this war. Twenty-Three Years. The countless comrades, battle brothers and sisters whose names you can’t even remember. The faces that begin to all blur together. By the end you found it hard to muster empathy for your fellow man, nevermind the enemy.

You think you gave a damn whether the Auxl cowering before you carried weapons? That you cared if some delegation or other of flag-waving apes had sued for peace? That it mattered if any of those that burned in your firestorm weren’t even born when Calaxis fell?

You were flame. You were fury. The Leviathan didn’t choose you only for you to wring your hands and bemoan the fate of the blasted Auxl, you were chosen to be the architect of their destruction. The sight of Auxl Primus burning, the conflagration reaching up into the vey heavens themselves, was the most beautiful thing you have ever seen.

You remember it all, so swept up in the bloodlust you couldn’t tell where your rage ended and the Leviathan’s began. That was the closest to Dark Combine you had ever come, that dreaded final fusion that results in the worst mix of man and machine. After, you swear your Leviathan purred in contentment. The instrument of your vengeance, your most loyal steed…

Nope, sorry.

The Leviathan Legio is at odds with the Astra-Anglican church. What began as a snub, naming the Leviathans after unsavoury people from the bible, is now a heavily ingrained Legio tradition.

If you were to choose Lucifer, that would be at least the Twenty-Seventh of that Name. Very popular.
>>

Solomon was pretty unsavoury at the end, defying gods wishes and becoming an outright heretic

Solomon turned outright heretical at the end of his rule. It is said in the Bible one is not to covet horses, gold or women. And yet horses from all the way from Egypt came to Israel, 666 bars of gold were delivered to him yearly and he married over 300 women, of which not all were Christian. They began to speak into his ear, and soon he built temples to their gods and turned away from the faith.

Despite all his wisdom, Solomon fell to sin. For that, he and David were punished.

Alternatively if we want a fembot we could go for Salome. I don't know how these A.I work, so not even sure if they are gendered.

How about Delilah?

"And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods. But he did not keep what the Lord commanded. Therefore the Lord said to Solomon, "Since this has been your practice and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you and will give it to your servant. Yet for the sake of David your father I will not do it in your days, but I will tear it out of the hand of your son. However, I will not tear away all the kingdom, but I will give one tribe to your son, for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem that I have chosen." - So on and so forth.

Plus, who doesn't want our main gun to be called the "Ark of the Covenant"?

Delila is nice, I think Salome is a little more important due to killing John the Baptist, but Delila has a little more personality to her.

“Solomon, First and Only of That Name.”

You realise that you must cut quite the eccentric figure. Of the dozen or so other figures you note the slim-cut blue of several Naval Admirals, the bloody red of the Generals and Commanders, the flagrantly expensive cloth of some well-places nobles or well-to-do Merchant Princes. You are the only figure all in crisp black, the Legio have never been much for ostentation.

Your appearance is made all the more startlingly by your own appearance. In contrast to your dark skin, your hair is…

------------------------------------------------

A fair Blond. Like the majority of those that hailed from Calaxis.

A striking Red. You kept it dyed in a show of solidarity to the regiment you were attached to.

An eerie White. An unusual side effect of the Bonding with your Leviathan.

-----------------------------------------------

You did not escape the war unscathed. Some scars will never fade, and you suspect that (barring some serious cosmetic surgery) you will carry these to the end of your days. Your mark is…

The lengthy scar that streaks down one side of your face, over your eye, earnt during the final hours of the Danchim Pass.

The gruesome burns that run up along the entirety of your left arm and shoulder. You prefer to keep it covered.

The headaches. They’re not so bad, so long as you Bond frequently with your Leviathan. But too long away and it becomes unbearable…

How?

Eerie White is ok. Maybe the bonding does something to our genes as well? Maybe all Leviathan pilots have that trait?

Maybe we got a shorter fuse, getting angry more easily since the bonding - or maybe it's just the war experience.

You snap out your musings to the sudden realization that the Herald… is still talking.

“These souls are herein put under your protection, that they may serve you, and you them, to build both hearth and home with the blessings of Her Majesty and the Church. These souls are yours to govern, to reward and to chastise as you see fit, they shall abide by such laws as you decree…”

A polite way of saying ‘here are some poor unwanted sods, do what you like with them’. Colonists. Your colonists. Colonization is a risky endeavour, and those wealthy or well-placed enough to have some say in where they want to settle down certainly don’t choose the risky border-holdings. No, your colonists didn’t have the luxury of choice. The exiled, the outcast or the condemned. No doubt some of their number are just glad to be heading anywhere except where they came from, but the majority of them didn’t have much of a say in the matter.

Tens of thousands of souls, relying on you. You can’t help but feel the weight of that responsibility as you think about the colonists from…

Pick Two.

Novus Londinium and New Wessex. Prisons are expensive, and on such an overpopulated planet they take up valuable space as well. Sentencing to the Colonies is a popular recourse for the courtrooms. And when overpopulation becomes a real problem, who neighbourhoods are simply press-ganged into colonial duties.

Keyafulk Sultanate. Pacifists make poor rebels, the spiritual revolution that the devout followers of Janid’Islam thought would overturn the corrupt Sultanate failed dismally. With the most die-hard members of that movement executed, the families and suspected sympathizers were exiled soon after.

Dalholen and other territories. The pagan movement of the Scandiv Faith has always been at odds with the Astra-Anglican faith. Reclusive and adherents to an old belief, those that follow it have faced increasing persecution from the Church. Some of them have been thrown in on trumped up charges, while others left their lands on their volition, hoping to make a home elsewhere.

Kitwe Minoris. The League of African Nations is now little more than a protectorate in the August Commonwealth, and has only just emerged from a civil war. Guerrillas, their families, entire tribes that picked the wrong side, wanted mercenaries; all of these chose a pardon and one-way ticket out of LAN space over execution.

Samsara Adherents. To the Church, AI’s are a necessary evil, permitted only because of their utilities. For them to be regarded on an equal level, let alone –revered- means excommunication. To the quasi-Hindu Samsara faith, AI’s and uplifted creatures should be cherished and honoured, to them these beings are living, breathing(so to speak) proof of reincarnation at a higher level.

Sino-Rus System. Generally a dour, humourless people, these colonists are the restless trouble makers. Not enough of a threat to the state to warrant more extreme methods, but enough of a nuisance to seem them shipped off to be someone else’s problem. Some miss their homes, but many are just happy not to have been ‘disappeared’.

Planetary Assests: 5 Points
(You may choose up to two drawbacks to gain further points)

Rich in Minerals. Almost every colony makes it's living off the materials it mines, at least at first. This world however, promises a higher yield than most.[-5]

Strategically Located. Either placed along a well-travelled trade route, a valuable choke-point or simply the last stop for most ships in the area before a long jump, your world is perfectly placed to take advantage. Location, as they say, is everything.[-5]

Terraforming Potential. Current terraforming technology can make any atmosphere breathable given enough time, but your planet has all the rare elements necessary to be come something truly beautiful given a few generations.[-5]

Drawbacks
Plagued by Pirates. Border planets tend to be far from the eyes of the law, and hence far from the arms of it. Going by reports of neighbouring systems, pirates definitely operate in the area. No doubt their secret haven is nearby.[+5]

Remote: (Not incompatible with strategically located). Not only a border planet,
this world is located on the very fringes of Commonwealth territory. While you may be further than most from prying eyes, any reinforcements or response to a call for aid will be a long time coming. [+5]

Unruly Natives [atmosphere still inimical to human life]. Possibly sentient, certainly savage and definitely hostile, these creatures will not take kindly to any attempts at colonization. [+5]

This is certainly a possibility, however I was under the impression from previous posts that we were a queenswoman through and through.

August Commonwealth has 4 degrees of control over its holdings.
(1) The Realm. Direct control under Her Majesty's government.
(2) Territories. Most of the old-world spacefaring nations are now these (Like Sino-Rus, Keyafulk, LAN etc). They have their owns laws, customs and culture, but pay tribute, taxes and military aid.
(3) Vassals/Holdings (us). A single world or Conforms to the essentials of August law and there is -some- oversight from the central government like with Territories but for the most part we are the only part of Her Majesty's government out here.
(4) Allies. Basically larger holdings given the green light to do whatever in their area of space so long as they pitch in when Her Majesty call's the Oath's of Alliance in the big wars. It's a tricky road between Holding and 'valued ally'.

Aside from this, there are currently no human-dominant worlds completely independent from the Commonwealth.
