Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you ascended beyond your mortal confines, returned to your companions, and revealed what a horny bastard you secretly are.

It is currently the 30th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You sit in the courtyard of your family's palace surrounded by your companions and entirely nude. This was perhaps a foreseeable consequence of having your draconic skin burn away your skin and flesh such that your companions might collectively repair the damage you'd previously caused yourself in order to ensure your survival in a conflict against an ancient monstrosity from beyond the mortal realm. At some point, it might be worthwhile to take the time necessary in order to enchant a set of clothes with the reinforce rune, because you feel like this is becoming an all too common occurrence.

Normally this would be a remarkably uncomfortable situation, and in some ways it is. The deserts of Pidjata grow remarkably cold once deprived of the sun's warmth, and tonight is no different. However, you have neither the time nor the inclination to feel any sort of embarrassment regarding your present state of undress. Because you have sprouted a set of horns. Each one is perhaps a foot long. They flare out to either side of your head before curving down and inwards. The tips of both are sharp enough that they'd likely cause quite a lot of damage if you could put enough force behind them.

Gripping your new horns, you find them curiously warm to the touch. You suppose that blood flows through them just as anywhere else. As a test you give them a firm tug forward. It doesn't hurt, but you find it's remarkably easy to twist your head about by pulling on either of the bony protrusions. That may prove a disadvantage should you ever be forced to engage someone with your fist. They also pose issues regarding your various armors. None of your helmets have spaces cut in the side to allow horns to pass through, and even if they did it would seem nearly impossible to fit a helmet over both horns.

These logistical issues aside, how in Pani's name are you going to explain this to your mother and father? How will you explain this to society at large? Will they think you a freak, or does the common man still recall those tales of Surya's Children charging at the vanguard of the Hiacian formation to crush the armies of Rhynia?

At least Zahak seems enthusiastic about this new development. He cranes his long neck around the side of your chair, pressing his own much larger horns to yours. They clack together loudly, the sound perhaps amplified by the silence which descended over the courtyard. {They look different than mine but I like Papa's horns.} Your son's voice intones at the periphery of your thoughts. Excitement and curiosity roll off of him in waves.

“What... why do you have horns? This doesn't make any sense! People don't just grow horns!” Darzi's voice cuts through the quiet, more confused than angry.

Profectus answers before you're able. “Hey, maybe Mikhael just grows horns. Maybe he was cursed by that spirit he fought, or maybe it's because of one of the artifacts he uses. At this point I'm barely even surprised by the shit which goes on with him.”

That's honestly not a bad guess, though you think you have a better as to why you sprouted horns. It's likely due to the nature of your Grandmaster meditation. Perhaps, by reinforcing the shell and momentarily discarding your mortal form, you somehow altered your self-image. However, for now you think you'll leave them guessing. Just for a while longer.

“Maybe we somehow made a mistake?” Mortia suggest. “I don't know much about Water magic, not truly, but it could be we... I don't know, healed his skull too much? I know there are certain potions an alchemist can make which encourage the healing of fractures, and taking too much of these can lead to the growth of bony protrusions at any point on the body.” She glances in your direction, eyes very pointedly focused on your head. “Granted, I've never seen them grow so large or so orderly.”

Fulvia's voice thunders through your mind, a headache splitting your skull down the middle. {His appearance mirrors that of Hiacian Shock Infantry. They were known for their prominent horns, of which Centurions would often form collections.} You don't know how you feel about that, a rather gruesome idea if you're being honest. {Perhaps battling the spirit forced Dux Mikhael to undergo the same process these ancient warriors underwent themselves.}

That's an interesting point, actually. Could you have accidentally stumbled across the same process by which someone became a Child of Surya? Could you not merely resembled them, but actually be one of them? “I think I know why I've sprouted horns all of a sudden.” You declare, the speculation falling silent. “The method by which I achieved grandmastery of Metal magic involved-”

Darzi interrupts, much to your annoyance. “Wait, when did you achieve grandmastery of Metal? You never mentioned that.”

How could you possibly have forgotten that detail? “Didn't I? Well, it was how I managed to defeat the void entity and repair the fabric of reality. It was with that meditation that I feel I gained the final necessary insight. Metal magic, I believe, is a practice intrinsically tied to harnessing the divine. Granted, as I advance it increasingly seems that all schools are tied in some manner to the divine, but Metal magic more so than others. It is a school of-” You cut yourself off with a gesture. “Well, we can discuss that later if anyone is interested. My point is, that meditation reshaped my self perception to include horns.”

“So when we healed you, that altered self-image expressed itself in full.” Darzi puts together the pieces. You're glad she's managed to glean that insight into Water magic, it took you quite some time to finally understand that little fact. “You mentioned earlier that you 'transcended' mortal form. Did you have horns then, or did this come about sometime after the fact?”

You recall the brief reflection you caught of yourself in the pool of stagnant water. Coal black skin dotted with white markings, and crowned with horns of silver. Come to think of it, is your skin a little darker as well? “I had horns in that form, yes. I suppose that's likely the specific incident that altered how I perceived myself, though I'm not sure why ascending to that state would necessitate the growth of horns.”

Your brother's voice draws your attention. “Could you... shave them off, perhaps? I can't imagine you'll be able to freely move about society with a giant set of horns resting atop your head.”

An interesting proposition. You probably could shave them off, if you wanted to. They'd grow back every time either you or someone else tried to heal you though, you think. Actually, maybe if you cut them off and allowed them to heal the scar tissue would prevent Water magic from repairing them? Doe horns even develop scar tissue? You'd still have two hard plates of bone where no hair would grow, but a hat could cover those up.

>You could probably cut them off but you'd never be able to fully get rid of them. Worth a shot, you suppose.

Why would it be 90 base DC? It should be 60 just like any other GM meditation, with further difficulty resulting from whatever circumstances we decide the put ourself in.
>>
>>13083
We gain maluses each time we achieve GM in a different element.
>>
does anyone else think our main focus from now on should be enlarging our vys pool, since we're practically undefeatable when we're cornered? it's the long haul, things like spiritual pressure difference with children and enduring the warlock armor that gets us.

sure, we need fire to keep impressing our son as he grows, but not really for anything else, so that can wait until a month or so later, when our sanity has recovered enough for another grandmastery. Varvar said metal GM was the hardest one to withstand mentally.

>>
>>13083
Because we gain negative modifiers for any GM meditations above our normal max which for samjans is 2 if I remember right.
>>
>>13098
Sure. If any prospective anons still recall The List you'll have my vote on it.

Yep, all of it. At once. Should be no prob right Soma?
>>
>>13098
At this point it's probably dropped down to [6]/10
Previously its actual level, excluding the damage caused by the excising of the false god, was 4/10. I'd say now its actual level is 5/10.
It'll take a few more days for your soul to heal fully and reach that level though.
>>
>>13106
Not all samjans are created equal, some have higher magical potential remember?
>>
>>13114
Who has our sanity ring right now? Profectus? Or did we hold onto it for now?
>>
>>13122
We're holding onto it at the moment. We were planning on giving to Prof once he was conscious.
>>
>>13098
>>13111
Actually I think we should look for more ways to get additional bonuses so we can get more bonus traits.
>>
>>13122
I beliefve Profectus, I think we where worried about his state of mind after all of that spice.
>>
Karim showed us that we could achieve 4 GMs without suffering any maluses, so that implies that any malus we got for our fifth GM meditation would be smaller than someone who's highest number of GMs was 3 or 2 or 1.
>>
>>13093
Where was our malus for GM water in our GM metal meditation? We had no - modifiers to our rolls and + modifiers on the DC were due to circumstance.

>>13106
Limits to magical progression vary from person to person, not specifically by race. Darzi, for example, started receiving maluses at expert in a single element. We have not yet received any.
>>
>>13132
Karim estimated that the maximum number of Grandmasteries you were able to achieve was 4, that doesn't mean maluses start at 4.
>>
>>13106
it varies between people. Mik had the potential for 3 or 4, whereas Prof was said to be luck if he could even do one, since he's a pureblood elf, the degenerate of degenerates, who has a tiny soul getting double-tagged by two fire spirits at all times.
>>13111
post the List, I lost it.
>>
So.

What should our next two GM attempts be for?
>>
>>13136
Players aren't smart enough to figure that out.
>>
>>13136
Ah, that clarifies that then. Are the maluses really so high once we reach 4 that we can't conceivably Penta-mastery?

I mean, from that last GM meditation with the absurdly stupidly high DC, I think enough meditation aids would help us pass practically any meditation, unless you made the maluses stupid-high like +12 per increment.
>>
>>13144
I'd say fire, or nature if a good opportunity presents itself in eludia.
>>
>>13144
Nature and Fire

We already have an Earth GM and we can rely on metal for defense against the erosion of earth magic so it's the lowest priority the way I see it.
>>
>>13144
Fire then Nature. Maybe get Nature to master before we GM fire though since we're now on a time limit to get to the jungle and we never use the crown.
>>
>>13136
Well, Karim is also a blind, goat-fucking degenerate, so what does he know? I say we aim for twice that number and don't stop until we successfully fuck a Child. Literally have sex with it.
>>
>>13098
We could probably knock out a couple of our unread effects and metas for a decent vys increase.

The only problem with going to the prophet is that the situation is more volatile than you'd think.

Future GM meditations. Grandmastering is very different skill level wise than the other levels. You can use adept level magics for free and start to mess with reality.
>>
>>13233
It's also sidetracking. Once, just once, I'd like Mik to do what he said he'd do. We've been manipulating our companions emotionally and even outright lying to them about anything if it suits us since all the way back in those Rhynian ruins, when Chrys called us out on our bullshit.

Which I kinda miss, since our companions nowadays seem to mindlessly drag themselves along with us with zero needs and desires. Mortia is sticking around with her thumb up her ass until something dangerous happens to her completely unrelated to why she came with us: plants. Fulvia is more of a robot nowadays. Chryssa has been the same since she dumped her spaghetti all over the Enclave. Darzi and Profectus are the only ones who feel like actual people to me nowadays.
>>
Guys, just real quick. What if we used our new mastery of magic to create a new model for Siege, implant portions of our soul into the tiny constructs to create Ultra Models that go at an exuberant price.
>>
>>13233
As long as she's agreeable I don't think it'll be a problem. Mik has no reason to want to debase her. And even if they did get into a conflict Mik would certainly end up the victor.
>>
>>13170

Honestly, we really should have the cat introduce itself to our party. We literally fucking saved his ass and made him the strongest goddamn spirit in the Empire.

We need to make a new business deal with him. We become the new emperors, subjugate the dragons and make them our vassal state with Zahak as their leader, and we have our physical armies aid his spiritual ones and his spirtual ones aid our physical ones.

Honestly, I would also like Profectus to become king of the Elves. He is such a total bro it would seem a shame to think otherwise.

If you have ever read the Dresden files, I want us to be Johnny Marcone.

We should legitimately become kingmakers.

Another question Soma, can we achieve a grandmastery in the Shaping Arts? Would it count towards the limit of 4 that Karim predicted or is it different enough?
Assuming it has five ranks like the primary schools, and advances similarly, that's a +10 to all meditations, which might counteract enough of the maluses to achieve a 5th gm, presuming that Karim wasn't familiar enough with them to account for them, and that they don't count towards the total themselves.

>>13287
We've gone over this whole "emotional manipulation and lying " shit already. We've established that everyone just likes the thrill. They can't think of whatever else they'd like to do except luxuriating in the wealth they've already obtained, and Profectus would go through his quickly, Darzi would get bored in less than five years and want to go adventuring again, Chryssa would either be with us or fighting dangerous shit on her own and aside from us still likes everyone in the party a lot, Zahak goes where we go and loves our short attention span tier dickery. Mortia's just following with us for one adventure and the worst she has to complain about is a little detour here and there.

Mikhael has always been the glory hounding attention hog of their adventures. Darzi just about got over her conflicting feelings in regards to her love of insane adventures recently.

Just get over it.

>Chryssa: literal autist
>Fulvia: literal robot
>Mortia: socially inept hikkineet
anon, it's not really surprising that they aren't very interesting as characters

admittedly they're all fairly well fleshed out, but Prof's PTSD hasn't been resolved (or even explored/addressed) and Darzi has been a fairly dynamic/evolving character wrt her relationship with Mik and/or her desire to settle down and act responsibly vs admitting she's adrenaline junkie who loves the life and death struggle of adventuring with Mik
>>
>>13337
As constructive as that was, do you have anything else to say?
>>
I'm tired of the repeated implication that we're somehow the villain here in regards to our companions. If they hated it, they would have stayed back at the estate. We aren't brainwashing them to love insane adventures filled with danger, violence, glory and wealth.

They follow us either for the thrill or a genuine "well it's Mikhael, what do you expect?" nonchalance and acceptance of our antics, with Profectus even trying not to form a strong emotional attachment to us because he fears us eventually dying and leaving himself vulnerable.
>>
ah, fuck, meant to quote >>13287 not >>13308

not to shit all over the other characters, but Chryssa's character development basically was "fall in love > get rejected > go kind of insane > revert to being autistic which is unfortunate in that there's not really any interesting way I can see her developing as a character

Fulvia's got that whole insane screaming soul that's locked down that we're apparently just going to pretend doesn't exist and Mortia...idk desu I dunno she seems pretty undeveloped as a character like SK
>>
>>13346
I think Fulvia acting more robotic is simply because of her new chassis. It's not meant for socializing. Her thought process literally changes depending on the body. Mortia is just so out of place it's not even funny, she doesn't know anything about the planet. Chryssa has a horn up her arse because of Mik's lack of direction it feels like.

Your first instinct is to channel a little Fire magic to craft an illusion. It would be a fairly simple task to hide your horns that way. However, trying to draw upon your vys only sends an ache spreading through your chest. You wonder if this is what it's like to lose a limb. You know that you're not doing anything wrong, you've harnessed your vys in this manner thousands of times over the course of your life. You can even feel your reserves, they're at your fingertips. Yet, when you try to draw from them they simply refuse to respond.

Frustrated by your current impotence, you heave a weary sigh. “I suppose I could probably shave down my horns, but just because I can doesn't mean I want to. Honestly I think I quite like them. Besides, just look at Chryssa. She has horns and they don't seem to cause her too many problems.”

“But she's a human, Mikhael.” Your brother is quick to point out. “Most people probably simply assume she's the subject of some strange experiment or otherwise a form of mutant. The Rhynian tendency to meddle with the Gods' creations is infamous.”

A fair point, and a truth you can attest to in your own travels. Profectus, Tertia, Chryssa, and Fulvia are all testaments to the Rhynians skill in manipulating life. Even those accursed lions which roam Pidjata are a result of their efforts. “I can't deny the truth of what you say, Zaahir, but let us not forget our own history. The Hiacians once employed a horned race known as the Children of Surya in their wars against the Rhynians. They eventually died out, but I'm sure my current appearance would mimic theirs almost exactly.”

Your brother opens his mouth to respond, but before he's able it seems a revelation strikes him. “You know, Mikhael... maybe you're right.” He admits, you can practically see the thoughts roiling in his head. “I think I've an idea of sorts. Come by my rooms tomorrow, if you'd like. There's something I think we ought to discuss. Not now of course, I need to consult with my wife on the matter.”

You hadn't really seen this calculating side of your brother before. It's reminiscent in many ways of your father whenever a particularly clever idea strikes him. You wonder, could this have something to do with that priest he's employing as a torturer in his dungeons? You know very little of your family's alliance with the resurgent Suryan priesthood, but you do find yourself curious as to what they'd think of your new appearance.

Zaahir wanders off without another word, consumed with his own thoughts. You turn your attention once more to your companions, suddenly remembering your lack of dress. Reaching into your cloak, you retrieve a pair of cotton trousers. You try to stand from your chair to pull them on, but find that you're still too weak to properly support yourself. Fortunately Profectus offers his assistance, and with significant effort on your part you eventually manage to make yourself descent.

I bet when Darzi wakes up every day and sees the scars on her hands she subconsciously seethes at Mik for doing what she couldn't. In spite of his utter recklessness, Mik has been able to overcome any trial he's faced with her through sheer skill. He's had no casualties. Darzi, on the other hand, made just a small mistake and lost her entire squad. It probably kills her inside and she probably simultaneously hates and loves Mik for it.

oh, I agree, I'm just saying that the way they've developed as NPCs in game has ironically resulted in the devolution in character.

Darzi seems real/is well written in that she's conflicted in myriad ways (relationship with Mik, desire to leave the group vs continue adventuring, feeling like a burden because she's not as high powered aside from armor that isn't even hers) and none of these things are really things that can be fixed by going through a checklist

same thing with Prof, where he's a freak who's out of place, out of time, in love with the only other person who understands him, has severe PTSD, is terrified of losing his only friends, the leader of which has a reckless lack of self preservation instincts, etc etc none of his problems have easily solutions (or will every be solved)

whereas any development we've given Chryssa, Mortia or Fulvia has basically resulted in Soma writing himself into a hole or solved all their problems, making them seem kinda two dimensional

don't forget that Chrys's stoicism makes it super hard for us to tell what the fuck she's actually feeling. Often times, her expression of feelings comes off as a yandere (that includes her hard stance on monogamy.

>>13438
Mortia could actually do with some local tutoring I feel, just doesn't seem right to devote a whole lot of time to give her general information of the world itself and how her magics actually work. Still wanna figure out what the deal with her artifacts is though.

Fulvia is the character that is awesome but she'll most likely end up leaving after a while anyway to truly begin her campaign. I want to see what happens if we find an actual heavy combat construct that is compatible.

Chryssa has been around since the beginning. She'll be around for life if we purposely don't betray her or something of that line. I still want to kill her fiance because he was a dick.

blame christian morals and their stance on yaoi in the time between the time of Rome and the time of 4chan.
>>
>>14051
Yup, that was pretty much the gist of it. They were more concerned with being viewed as masculine or feminine, and being penetrated was seen as feminine.

That still is the view in many former areas of Rhynia. However, elves have always taken a dimmer view on that sort of thing. They place a very high emphasis on virility and the value of marriage, and view homosexual activity as flying in the face of both.

Thus far, Profectus has seemed to tend towards the Elven view more than the Rhynian.

Fellows I propose a simple question. We know about the strings that connect Mik between Zahir. What if we attempted to create those same strings permanently between our companions?
>>
So I was thinking about the logistics of getting through the jungle to this place we're supposed to be activating within a fortnight.

Do we plan on just flying over the whole thing, hitting the button and leaving? Because if we're going to do a longer trip with our companions, we'd be leaving the carriage, and probably our son behind (because fuck putting him in danger).
In which case it would make sense to set up some kind of base camp outside the jungle proper, where we can leave the shit we're not taking with us (and probably Prof the fragile motherfucker).

To make this actually viable, we should ask the cat for some kind of teleportation-based artifact, like a Mark/Recall arrangement, ideally that allows for two separate marks and then instant transit between them. That way we can make a days travel, mark our location, recall make to base camp to avoid resting in Eludia, and then recall back to the other point at the start of the next day.
>>
>>14580
Why ask the cat for something we can easily make?
>>
>>14580
We have fast travel. I say we look into the portal room more and ignore any sidequests that soma throws at us. Just gotta check if there are any prebuilt destinations besides the one we know about.
>>
>>14580
Perhaps we could set up a shrine somewhere very close to the jungle and use it as a base camp?

Obviously we'll have to fight for it, but I think it'd be worth it.
>>
>>14580
Or you know we can invade the spirit realm forest to make moving quicker and to find the Temple.
Honestly that seems like the fastest way through the forest and the one with the least amount of spirit fuckerry.
Also reminder one of the spirits connected to the crown was from the forest.
>>

You look to your companions, hosting a brief mental debate. Do you want to sleep, or do you want to begin the process of repairing your soul? As tempting as the former may be, you're not certain that it will actually do you any good. The latter on the other hand is almost certain to alleviate your exhaustion to a degree, but it will also require you actually exerting effort to tear away the hardened clump of vys which have no doubt formed from your reserves.

Then it occurs to you that you could just as easily have your companions do all the hard work for you. “You know, since I have you all here, this would be the perfect time for a group meditation. I need to clear away my vys reserves so I can start building them up again naturally, and I think you all could really learn something about the nature of the soul by studying mine in its present state.”

Mortia huffs. “But it's so late!” She whines. “Are the mechanical workings of the soul really more important than sleep? We can just meditate in the morning.”

“If you don't want to meditate, by all means leave me here to suffer in silence.” Your tone shifts, adopting an admonishing tone. “It's not like I just spent the last two days embroiled in a life or death struggle that's left me a borderline cripple.”

She seems to seriously consider just leaving you for a moment, but eventually folds her arms underneath her chest and resigns herself to delaying her rest a while longer. “Fine, Since you're a friend. Let's get on with this.”

You grab onto one of Zahak's horns and have him help you out of the chair. Once you've collapsed against his side and forced yourself into a meditative pose, you indicate to your companions that they should take seats around you in the courtyard. Zahak is pleasantly warm, and you no longer notice the cold to quite the same extent you did previously. He wraps one of his enormous wings around you, pulling you closer.

Once everyone had found their seat, you launch into a brief explanation of what you intend to do. “This meditation ought to be fairly simple. You should notice once we begin that my reserves have transformed into a solidified block of vys. It's because of this that I find myself so horribly weak, and the process of repairing this blockage is as simple as eroding it away. Thus, we'll primarily be employing Earth magic for this meditation.”

“Once the blockage is cleared away I'd like if all of you could instead focus your attention on my soul. I have only a limited understanding of what's changed, and I think getting a few outside opinions on the matter could be useful.” You look to Chryssa, addressing her specifically. “I'm particularly interested in whether or not you notice anything different. You're perhaps the foremost expert on the composition of my soul besides myself, considering it's you who removed the influence of the false god from my divine shard.”

She nods, but remains otherwise expressionless. That preliminary out of the way you close your eyes and allow your thoughts to begin drifting as they please. As your heartbeat stills and your breathing becomes controlled and even, the ebb and flow of vys through the universe fades gradually into view. Your companions appear as bright points of light in a sea of blue, red, and green.

However, you look like a blemish upon the landscape. Normally your vys is diffused throughout your body in a more or less even fashion, with perhaps a slight concentration around your core. Now the majority of your body is entirely devoid of vys, while a thick block of it runs from the back of your head all the way down your spine. Bulges appear wherever the Heavy Warlock Armor's needles stabbed into your back, and its from these bulges that thin tendrils branch out to worm through way through the rest of your torso.

The way they writhe about almost makes them seem alive. You try to channel vys and watch as the tendrils drift slowly in the direction of your right hand, but they never actually detach from the hardened mass. As you study this odd phenomenon your companions begin the process of eroding away your unusable reserves, but they're only making slow progress. Well, with the exception of Chryssa. She seems able to rip away great chunks of this malignant tumor with very little effort.

You leave her to her task, trusting that she knows what she's doing. Instead your attention shifts to your other companions. You're able to start drawing some of the ambient vys into yourself to replenish your reserves, but rather than begin the process of recovery you elect to channel this power. Nature magic forces your mind to expand, and mix subtly with the minds of your companions.

Using Chryssa as an example to replicate you start to subtly nudge their attention in the direction of specific points on the hardest portions of your reserves. Working together they're able to make much faster progress, and more than that you're able to glean some insight into what their thoughts are regarding the process of meditation. At a glance you can tell Profectus is trying to too strictly control the release of his vys, and impress upon him via the emotional register the importance of allowing vys to operate as it wills.

It's a gradual process but he begins to loosen his grip upon his own reserves, allowing him to more effectively erode yours. By contrast, Darzi has almost the exact opposite problem. She does not properly focus her expenditure of vys upon but a single point, but rather tries to expand it out across a broad area and affect many different things at once. Again, you try to encourage a more focused mindset in your companion, but she proves more resistant to the emotional urging that Profectus responded to.

So you try something a little different, and instead try to guide the vys she's expending directly. It's a difficult task, especially in your depleted state, but eventually she starts to notice that she's getting better results with more focused efforts and takes over on her own from there. The pervading sense of nausea which had plagued you since you woke up is starting to abate, which is nice, but there's still quite a lot of work to be done.

Fulvia is an odd creature. Her mind is as incomprehensible as ever, and though she expends far more vys than she needs to, she seems competent enough. You leave her to her efforts, since you don't really know if you could give her any advice that would actually help. Considering, after all, that her magical understanding is coded to her Core. Instead your attention shifts to Zahak, and you observe your son for a time.

Quite contrary to what you'd expected, Zahak is being too timid in his efforts to erode your vys reserves. Perhaps he fears hurting you, or perhaps he simply isn't confident enough yet in his abilities. You seek to address both problems by flooding his thoughts with a warm sense of affection and encouragement. As anticipated he responds well, and begins to channel his vys a little more liberally.

That leaves only Mortia lacking in guidance. As is the case for so many inexperienced Vatis, she is spending far too much vys to accomplish what she desires. You manipulate the excess spilling from her reserves and guide it instead into her actual spell. The magic this produces is far more powerful than she'd intended, and as you'd hoped she begins to ease back on the amount of vys she's channeling. When you cut the flow of vys and allow her to continue her efforts on her own, she manages to maintain the same level efficiency she'd had while you assisted her.

With the efforts of your companions working in unison it doesn't take long for them to finish stripping away your congealed vys, and the weariness which had pervaded your every thought and action subsides. You start to gather the ambient vys which pervades the courtyard and incorporate it into your reserves, and you also note your reserves beginning to recover naturally as the husk degrades into vys, but you'll still be forced to spend quite some time meditating here.
>Vys Pool: (1/[30])

You note that the thoughts of your companions are growing both more rapid and less ordered. Recalling that you told them to inspect your soul after they finished stripping away your reserves, you find yourself curious as to what they've seen that distresses them so. As you sink deeper into your trance the ebb and flow of vys through the palace is replaced by the endless pinpricks of light which represent the souls of those around you.

Your eye is drawn first to Profectus' soul. Great holes have been eaten through his husk, and they don't seem to be closing up as they ought to. Within you can see the black stone of his soul's shell, eaten through with so many holes that the divine shard is clearly visible within. You don't recall his soul being in quite such horrendous shape before he took the spice. Could this be a result of him losing his arm, or perhaps simply a side effect which hasn't fully worn off yet? Could something else have happened while you were gone?

Then your attention is drawn to your own soul. You have no true husk, not in the manner that your companions do. Rather, your entire soul has compressed itself into a golden ball not even a fourth of the size of your companions' souls. Even smaller than Zahak's red husk, its coloration still something you don't fully understand. You channel Nature magic to try and get a better idea of what exactly is going on with your soul at the moment, and as you begin to exert your will a ripple moves across its surface.

This is nothing new, but the ripple is much more prominent now than it would have been before. Out of curiosity you try to erode your soul, but the compressed form of your husk proves resistant to your efforts. At first you worry this may cause some sort of problem should you ever need to reinforce your shell to once again ascend into that greater state, but at the subtlest urging on your part the golden husk splits apart to reveal the shell beneath.

Rather than being composed of familiar black stone, it has taken on a curious silver coloration. However, when you begin to channel some minute amount of vys into reinforcing the shell its coloration shifts distinctively towards gold. There are no holes in its surface at all, and you can only imagine that it would prove very difficult for a spirit and certainly for another Vatis to affect in any way.

As an experiment you try to channel a portion of your husk, and you're surprised to find that it moves to obey your will with the same ease that your vys reserves do. No longer do you have to hack off chunks of your husk and force it to obey your designs.

Withdrawing from the deep trance once more reveals the flow of ambient vys. You focus on regaining your reserves, the passage of time growing increasingly indistinct. One by one your companions depart, until only Zahak remains huddled against you in the courtyard of the palace. When finally your eyes snap open, the sun has risen and a spread its pleasant warmth through the desert. Well, pleasant for now. You know that by midday that heat will become oppressive, and most people will retreat indoors to escape Surya's unending wrath.

You still don't feel entirely yourself, a fact for which you'd probably blame some manner of damage to your soul, or perhaps simply a lack of proper sleep. You did notice, thinking back on it, that your husk seemed to be degrading much faster and you didn't seem to retain nearly so much of the resultant vys as you usually would. Perhaps that has something to do with the mechanism by which the meditation poultice works?

Zahak is still fast asleep, so you do your best to slip out from under his wing without disturbing him. You feel in need of a bath, but more importantly you're desperately in need of a meal. It's been... probably more than a day since you've eaten. Maybe two. Your sense of time has really been off lately. You'll probably also want to get in contact with Mahana at some point.

The relief that fills you when you channel Water magic and don't encounter that dull ache in your gut is immense. You hadn't realized just how much you enjoyed the power at your fingertips until it was gone.

Water condenses from the moisture in the air, and you quickly use it to wash off the layer of sweat and grime which had accumulated on your skin over the course of the past few days. You lack for scented oils, so instead content yourself with just running water through your hair until it's somewhat acceptable. When that's finally done you carefully remove your cloak and extract a white cotton shirt, sliding it on over your head.

Lastly you extract your travel worn boots from within the void and set them down on the ground. These boots had been with you from the very beginning, though they were beginning to look pretty ragged. You slide them on regardless and set off towards the dining hall where you first met your brother after reaching Nazir.

Navigating the palace halls feels strangely unfamiliar after the events of the last few days. The servants bustling past you, attending to the mundanity of their lives. You both envy and pity them, for while they may never achieve the wealth and status that you enjoy they likewise don't have to deal with nearly the amount of stress you're usually under. Many of them go out of their way to avoid you, some casting nervous glances in your direction as you pass by. You suppose you must look quite the oddity with the horns sprouting from the sides of your head.

Eventually you enter the richly appointed dining hall where your brother has his throne. He sits upon a dais backed by three golden panels, his wife resting comfortably against the bench with her hands placed on her swollen belly and your brother chatting animatedly with his elven steward. Their conversation stops as you enter the room, and with a wave of his hand Zaahir calls forward a slave from the edge of the room bearing a silver platter loaded with a variety of dishes for your consideration.

You pause as the woman reaches you, selecting a pot of shakshuka and a slice of melon. As you take a seat amidst the cushions arrayed before your brother's throne another slave, a human man, places a pitcher of mulled wine and a cup before you. The egg in the shakshuka is cooked just the way you like it, poached to the point of being a little runny but not excessively so. Though you will say there's a little more cumin in the dish than you might like.

The first bite of food reminds you how long it's really been since you've eaten, pain seizing your gut. Several times you try to talk between mouthfuls of food but that proves a hopeless endeavor, and you give up entirely. You're halfway through the pot by the time you feel yourself again, the heat of the peppers finally dragging you away from your breakfast.

You wash it down with a few gulps of sweet red wine, and then finally turn your attention fully to your brother. “Apologies, I've skipped quite a number of meals lately. You wanted to speak with me, dear brother?”

He nods, and while you're pouring yourself another glass of wine begins to elucidate on whatever idea it was that so seized his imagination the night before. “That's right, your mention of the Children of Surya gave me an idea. You've met Zakariyya, our resident priest of Surya, yes?”

You think you know where this is going. “I met him briefly while surveying the dungeons, I believe. He's your torturer, isn't he?”

“Well, I suppose so.” Your brother frowns. “He does other things as well, he's a great comfort to the soldiers who prefer our violent Lord of Fire, and he's given wise council whenever I've asked. Regardless, I think your present appearance may present an opportunity for us to gain the favor of the his priesthood. If you could convince them that you are a member of the Children of Surya, reborn in our modern age, they'd probably revere you as a symbol of their resurgence.”

They'd probably also want to use you for their own purposes, and they'd expect you to teach them the method by which you ascended beyond the confines of your mortal form. No doubt they'd make for a powerful ally, especially if what you've heard of this prophet in the desert is true, but you're not sure it's worth the hassle.

And then Snap back when we are on the road, with a deviation to the temple for the stooges.

We can worry about all this other shit when we get back and get the secret of Elaudian steel to the travelling merchant.

And on the road we can also give Prof his memories back.

I kinda get the impression that some folks have forgotten, so just as a bit of a refresher there is an ancient teleportation array underneath the Palace of Nazir. Mik even built a pretty nice little stairwell straight down to it from the dungeons.

You can take that to Majhaya, which is much closer to Nazir. You'll probably have to leave your cart behind though.

I'm not arguing against that we can take the trip there sooner, or that we can teleport there faster, or that we can put the cart in pieces in the cloak and have ricky re-assemble it for us while we hire new camels in the new city.

My argument is is that I just want to get to Elaudia already, and i'm tired of the side quests. I'm tired of the snacks and I want the dinner, and I'm getting serious blue-balls here cause if we continue to get side tracked it's never gonna get solved and it'll cause bigger in game consequences, while at the same time taking more weeks to resolve.

I like your quests Soma. I usually have about an hour or two a week where I can read quests on suptg (i don't watch tv) and very rarely do I even 8 hours in a half-year to fuck around.

I work 16 hour days mon-thurs, 8 on fri (usually), and another 10 over the weekend and I have done so for going on 3 years now (it was actually closer to 100 hour weeks but I had to quit my third job) all to make sure I can achieve my ambitions but your posting speed is trying even my patience.

“I'd be open to the idea of a meeting with the priest, but I've a pressing matter I need to see to in Elaudia which would preclude any journey to the Pa'vala.” You shovel another bite of egg into your mouth, chewing contemplatively and washing it down with more wine. “I suppose when, or rather if, I return I might be willing to meet with their leader, but until then it will have to wait.”

Your brother frowns, his elbows coming to rest against his knees. “What is so pressing that you can't meet with an ally of our family? I really do think we could twist this to our advantage, given the right circumstances.”

Without missing a beat you launch into an explanation. “The three horrors from beyond creation who granted me this cloak have called upon me to repay a debt I owed them. You see, whilst deep within the Mines of Longia an ancient dragon attempted to seize control of my thoughts. I rebuffed the creature only with the help of this monstrous trio. Now they want me to journey into Elaudia to activate an ancient artifact of some unknown nature, and if I don't do so within a two week time frame they'll collect on their debt via some unnamed other means.”

You remain perfectly calm throughout, and return to your eggs once you've finished your explanation. Your brother's frown only deepens as he leans back in his thrown, his wife resting a hand on his shoulder. “It seems you more commonly consort with the terrors which defy the gods than you do mortal men and women, Mikhael.” Hasna remarks, apparently amused by the idea. “I'm sure this tribal prophet will be able to wait until your return. Do be careful though, I know my husband would be devastated by news of your death.”

Zaahir sighs, allowing himself a sip of mulled wine. “Yes, I suppose my wife is right. The proper meeting can wait until you get back. I do at least want Zakariyya to see your new appearance though. I think if he were to pass on news of your transformation to Tel Kadhish it would serve to spark interest and we wouldn't be forced to legitimize our request for a meeting upon your return.”

A reasonable enough assumption. “So where is Zakariyya now? I plan to spend much of the day either reading or in deep meditation, so I'd prefer to get this meeting out of the way if possible.”

(1/2)
>>
>>15918
No sense panicking about it though, if it ends up causing a problem we'll just have to work with it.
>>
Your brother gestures vaguely off to your left. “He's somewhere underground. He's spent much of the last few days helping the men clear out the tunnels underneath the palace. He does so relish a good fight, and the Gods surely know that there are a thousand and one creatures in those forsaken tunnels which would offer him one.”

You breath out a sigh, yet another errand for you to run before you can finally relax. Still, hopefully if his task is to clear out the tunnels they'll be a bit safer than they were the last time you ventured through them. It sounds like your brother's had his soldiers patrolling them regularly. “I'll endeavor to track him down after I finish my meal then. Hopefully I'll be able to pick him out with the application of a little Nature magic, and if not I'll ask around among the soldiers to see if I might find someone to guide me.”

“Are you sure that's wise?” Your brother ask. “What if he finds it odd that you'd search him out? It's not as if you've any real prior relationship with the man. I don't want him to suspect our true motives in this.”

You shrug your shoulders, speaking around a mouthful of egg. “You're being paranoid brother. I already told you I met the man before. I'll tell him I've heard tales of the Children of Surya and thought to seek out his expertise on the matter.” You pause for a sip of wine, the sweet red cooling the heat on your tongue. “I'd be willing to bet he'll have some sort of test or trial for me, which I ought to be able to pass considering my talents as a Vatis.”

Zaahir seems calmed by your reassurance, relaxing one more into his throne. You pass the rest of the meal engaged in small talk with your brother and his wife, mostly regarding your sister and her family in Marqash. You inform him that she's doing well and seems to be getting along with her husband. You also point out that your niece will likely be wed soon, to a man of the Chaudhri.

Once finished you excuse yourself and make your way through the corridors of the palace to the ancient metal door leading to the dungeon. It grinds open with a touch of vys, and you slip quickly down the stairwell. It's better lit than you remember it being, a fact which holds true for the entire dungeon. The stairwell you so laboriously crafted sits undisturbed at the end of the hall, guarded on either side by two armored men wielding long spears.

They do not try to stop you as you pass by, likely still recognizing you as the brother of their liege despite the change in appearance. However, you can't help but notice their grips tighten around the hafts of their spears. Part of you wants to tell them their mortal weapons would do them no good, but you don't really see any reason to frighten them more than they already are.

As you descend into the tunnels beneath the palace, you pause intermittently to channel a bit of Nature magic. There are several prominent collections of vys you take to be bands of soldiers roaming the tunnels, and one individual far deeper than any others apparently roaming by himself. However, you don't think this is the priest. The figure is almost devoid of vys, you could almost mistake them for a corpse.

(1/2)

>>
No, the priest is leading one of the bands of soldiers. At least, that's your guess. One of the bands exploring the area around the transport array has a figure among it with a particularly large vys pool, and it's this grouping you decided to investigate first.

It takes you perhaps ten minutes of walking to reach the ancient baths which mark the entrance to the transport chamber. Much less time going down than it had going up. Water cascades from ports in the ceiling, its source unknown, into a pool of clear water which drains into the sewers below. The water is cold, unfortunately, but what really draws your eye are the enormous statues hovering over the bath. A collection of enormous orbs, the smallest twice as large as your head, all surrounded by a thick band.

You make your way around the edge of the bath to the wooden doors on the opposite side. Pushing htem open you descend the cracked stone steps into the chamber below. The room is ancient, that much is immediately clear, and stinks of incense. The artifact itself is at the center of the room, but you ignore it for now. Instead you descend a set of stairs placed just beyond the enormous array, and it's in this lower chamber that you find the priest.

Zakariyya is tending to the wounds of one of the soldiers, using Water to close his man wounds. You can tell that he's not unskilled, but he's nowhere near your level of talent. You require only a gesture to mend the cuts and bruises which mar the soldier's flesh, and repairing his broken ribs requires only slightly more effort. The priest is caught off guard by your meddling, looking up from his work to see you descending the stairs.

His expression shifts from one of annoyance, to confusion, and then rapidly to realization. His hands start to shake, and he falls in reverence to his knees. “Is it you, holy one?” The priest ask breathlessly. “Has the prophesy been fulfilled?”

While diving through the archives I found this.

>The fourth chapter seems to discuss ways to atone for slights against the Font from which All Magic Flows, as the priest have dubbed Surya. Should one free from a battle they ought to thrust their hands into an open flame and beg Surya to grant them the iron will necessary to smite the enemy at their next meeting. If one should balk before a challenge they must brand themselves on the right buttock to, as the writer puts it, “light a fire under their cowardly asses”. Frankly, it seems devoted to brutalizing oneself to make up for some perceived slight against a deity that tried to wipe out your race anyway. Maybe it's simply because you were raised a devoted follower of Pani, but all of this just seems ridiculous.

We should give The Ritual Book of Surya a re-read, specially after talking with Zakariyya or meeting the prophet chick.
>>
>>34697
How is that even remotely close to being useful?

When you go archive-diving, you look for shit like a guy who accidentally told you where the armor of Al-Hikar was before you even knew who Dhatu was.

update: Hodei is the Chairman of the council ruling Anthus, and also a total idiot. in all likelihood, we can find him easily and extract the information with a mild application of spoop.

Spiros, the guy we killed for Suresh, was apparently the brains behind his operation. we talked to them in an inn, where he bragged about taking down a shitty dinosaur while everyone else did all the work.

and since you all forgot, the reason we want the armor of Al-Hikar is the cat needing it to free his trapped essence, and because it was supposedly gifted to the first emperor of Hiacia by Dhatu himself. seems like a fitting thing for a chosen one to wear, and a likely thing to get Dhatu's attention or placate him as an offering if we ever decide to go look for him.

we can turn Fulvia into a grandmaster GM from the inside, apparently.

>>>/tg/31486570

[...] He nods, and you turn to Fulvia. “I've been meaning to ask you, can you teach me Metal magic? You mentioned being knowledgeable.” She seems to snap out of her reverie, replying with. “Unfortunately no, my knowledge of magic is dependent on the body I inhabit. I lack all but the most basic understanding of magic.” Well, damn. “Is there any way you could learn more magic then” She thinks about it for a moment. “I suppose, if you were to enter the Core and program in the knowledge directly, it may work.”

I know it's obnoxious for me to keep bumping this thread, but that's kinda the cherry on top. I'll keep posting as I work through the archives.

actually, isn't her form partially Elaudian steel? if she or Mik can manipulate it, the two of them could probably cannibalize the administrator unit and "transpalnt" the hologram mechanism, or at least the parts that enable proper speech, into her current body.

although that'd take a decent chunk of in-quest time and is close enough to enchanting that I don't really see anon voting for it. especially since we have another companion, Profectus, neglected severely and with no less than two upgrades we can apply by meditating. one being the restoration of his memories, and the other being the proper subjugation of those two spirits in his arm.

>and since you all forgot, the reason we want the armor of Al-Hikar is the cat needing it to free his trapped essence, and because it was supposedly gifted to the first emperor of Hiacia by Dhatu himself. seems like a fitting thing for a chosen one to wear, and a likely thing to get Dhatu's attention or placate him as an offering if we ever decide to go look for him.
Nobody cares since this whole time Fulvia could have been reading the books we have on hiacia and refuse to read searching for clues but fuck that i guess

I have no idea what you're saying. in fact, your post is such an atrocity against the English language that I feel it must be punished. with a Rick & Morty slash pic.

Yeah, I guess. We should probably focus on Profectus for the moment.

That picture anon, why would you post such a thing?

oh, the brooches of communication translate everything into Rhynian. there is a small chance that it could translate Ricky's thoughts if we gave him one. the risk is that it could fail, either giving Mik an hour-long headache or destroying the brooch.

Ricky also has a very limited form of telepathy he can use on the sufficiently insane, and meditating on nature with that as its focus might also let us finally talk to him properly.

Are you retarded? Ricky said that doing that will shatter our sanity.

I actually do vaguely remember something like that, yeah. my bad.

in my defense, I'm posting based on the stuff I reread as I go along, and I'm still at Longia. the part with the lanterns that probably have the rune for 'light.' which might let us create literal laser guns with some help from Skull Kid. just a thing to keep in mind as we approach the epilogue.

You should really consider never posting again.

I'm not going to say stop posting, but consider easing up on how often you're bumping it.
Maybe get 3-5 different things before posting.
You don't want to make the post too big though or it's just going to get glossed over

Anything ever come of introducing Ismail to Skull Kid boss? http://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/38343657/#38346774

So, does /qst/ have an archive or are we just going to rely on some kike manually pastebinning this entire thing? I'm sure that someone will save the page and offer it up for download but I'm sure as fuck not downloading anything uploaded by BQ players for BQ players.
