His armor Black, Skulls mounted on his waist, the black crown mounted upon the beasts head was proof enough. Leo had seen this man in his dreams. This twisted and corrupted man, the king of elf-kind. His skin looked black, sandy. His face was missing its nose, and only the smallest layer of skin covered his head. He held his silver sword outright from his right hand, Pointed at Leo and his companions. The elven mages fire attack proved fruitless, as the being conjured a barrier of some kind to defend itself from the blow. Just as before, this enemy was more than a mindless shambling husk. The situation looked grim.

Leo was tired. He had run down the stairway from the top floor with all his might in order to give the group time to prepare, to get ready to fight. And in the end, it served little purpose. For their ambush had failed. Thea had channeled enough magic to unleash her lightning, but held back. Waiting for an opening, or else her attack may also end up slamming into a barrier. The group couldn’t afford to have to wait for another spell. They knew nothing of their enemy’s abilities, other than that it had some form of magical prowess.

To add to the desperation of the situation, the two remaining knights in the group were seriously injured. One with an array of broken bones and shattered ribs, Another with a deep cut across his torso, Shield destroyed and armor ravaged from their previous battle. The two men could barely stand upright, Let alone swing their weapons at a foe most likely faster than them both. Leo could hear the elven mages were breathing heavily behind him, starting to feel the strain on their bodies as well. Thea was on the verge of collapse, and nobody knew how much she had in her.

But the most devastating thing in the back of Leo’s mind, was that this was the first of 4 foes. The other 3 had yet to descend the stairway, but Leo knew that they had seen him. It was only a matter of time before the enemy was reinforced. The fate of everyone was at stake.
“Create an opening, and I’ll be ready” Thea whispered, as they all prepared to meet their destinies.

>Stall the enemy giving Thea and the mages time to retreat.
>Let the knight’s attack first and help create an opening for Thea.
>Charge the elven king and create an opening by yourself.
>Let the knights distract the enemy while you help Thea escape.

excellent, now if you prefer the same option don't roll so we can keep this success without bringing the average down.

Boo, you should add something about how the rolls work in the opening post.

roll 1d100 with your vote. Majority vote decides the action, average of all votes determines effectiveness.

You could do the average of rolls out of 3 or something. Just set a a minimum amount of rolls before you will proceed, unless the board is super slow
>>

Or he could use best of three like most quest

>>134247
Initially i was doing 'average rolls OF the vote" so the rolls from options that didn't win majority wouldn't get added.
I mean, the best rolls in the world won't spawn a set of plot armor for an awful decision.
>>
>>134255
Yeah, I meant like if 3 people chose option a you average their vote, but then you'd have to worry about having enough people vote it. So idk.

The problem with best of 3 rolls is that you end up usually getting at least a 50, which is good for us but not always thrilling.

The two knights and Leo quickly sprang into action, and rushed down the Elven king, first surrounding him, then moving in to strike together. However, the Knights wounds were far too great to be able to keep pace with Leo, and as one of the knights raised his blade to strike, the elven king swiftly dashed in towards him, and swung his blade horizontally at him.

The blade cut through his arm like a hollow paper tube, and swept more than halfway into his chest. Blood began to pour out of the knight as he cried out in pain. Even from this distance Leo could tell that the wound was untreatable, and the man wouldn’t be with them much longer. Even in the face of such wounds, the knight still brought his sword down, but the leapt back into his original position. The knight dropped his blade soon after, falling to his knees clutching at the shoulder as he bled out. As the king came back into range, Leo and the last remaining royal slashed at the elven king.

Leo felt his blade cut deep into the elven king, but it felt like he had cut open a bag of sand. He heard the king groan as the flesh on his back began to glow and burn from the cut, but no blood came forth from the wound. Instead a small amount of grey dust seemed to burst out from the laceration, but the king seemed largely unfazed. The knights blade also connected, dealing even less severe a cut, but a meager amount of dust had also poured out from the strike.

The king shot a soul piercing look into Leo. In that brief moment of eye to eye contract, Leo felt as if his life had already been taken. That his body had been cut in two, and he was bleeding from every pore on his body. He froze up, Time seemed to move in slow motion as the king brought his sword up over his head, and began to swing it down into Leo’s head.

Just then, a loud crack could be heard, as a bolt of lightning struck the king center mass, Sending his teeth into a chattering frenzy as he spasmed and twitched from the blow. His body did not catch fire, and a large amount of ash had gathered at the king’s feet. Leo quickly came to his senses and jumped away from the creature, as it then stood motionless in place, still clutching its sword.

A straight 50 is more or less just trading blows. but rolls have always come second to choices themselves. averaging a 90 to punch someone in the face does a lot less for the MC than a 50 to swing a warhammer at the guy.

It was too good to be true. The king wasn’t dead, merely stunned if anything. So Leo followed up without any hesitation, bringing his sword down onto the king. The king attempting to get away, stumbled backwards as the silver sword cut cleanly through his arm. Heaps of dust spewed out from the dismembered limb the other knight attacked simultaneously, letting out a savage war cry as his blade ripped through the kings back. The king quickly spun around to cut apart the knight, But he had jumped back just in time to avoid the blow.

The king was now at a distance, Glancing over at the wound just inflicted. His arm dissolved on the ground into a pile of ash and bone, as the rings slipped from the finger and onto the ground. But even in spite of such massive injuries, the king raised his sword yet again pointing it directly at the duo. The king now stood to the western half of the room, with Leo and the royal knight at the eastern half. The King then turned a head towards the mages positioned at the doorway. Leo’s heart nearly burst out of his chest when he considered the speed of the king. If he bolted over them and at the mages full speed, neither Leo nor the royal knight would have the means to stop him in time.

It appeared that Thea and the other mages were in the middle of channeling their magic for another round of attacks. As Leo attempted to reposition himself between the king and the mages, the entire group heard the distinct sounds of loud, booming footsteps, emanating from the stairway leading to the sixth floor. As the noise echoed through the room, the king began to walk his way over to the entrance the noise was coming from. Sword still aimed directly at Leo. Had that hulking fleshy monstrosity found the means to get through the doorway upstairs? But it seemed like the king was on the defensive. He was keeping his distance while remaining fixated on us. Maybe his wounds were a lot more serious than they appeared. It was hard to tell with a face without any emotion, and a body without blood. His slow, carefully placed movements was the only indication Leo had.

The complete lack of any reinforcements from the human army was at the forefront of Leo’s mind. He could not see outside the walls around him, and was oblivious to the situation below. He couldn’t help but worry as to what was going on at the front lines.

Leo thought it would be best if they could cut down their foe before more enemies came. Leo looked over to the knight and nudged forward slightly, as they both then charged down the king together. As Leo approached the king, he felt something grab hold of him, as he was lifted into the air, gazing down upon his comrade and the king.

The king swiftly avoided the sluggish attack from the injured knight, and brought his blade to meet his neck. The knight coughed and gurgled on his own blood, as he dropped his weapon and clenched the sword shoved through his throat. Leo felt his chest caving in as whatever had a hold of him began crushing his body. It was incredibly hard to draw breath as pain surged throughout his body. As the monster turned him around, Leo could see just what It was that had grabbed him. It was another hulking fleshy beast, not unlike the one from the 3rd floor. But this one had two very clear distinctions. First was its ability to grab, and the second, was the horrific teeth that were placed where a head should have been.

The creature was starting to pull Leo into his gaping maw, as Leo heard his body begin to crack and break from the overwhelming force of the creature. It was then that Leo heard the distinct sound of the elves casting their magic as two blazing fireballs shot across the ground, presumably at the king. Leo desperately tried to pull his sword arm free as the monster prepared to rip him to shreds, as he heard Thea screaming from down below him. Glancing over the hand of the creature, He could see Thea jumping to cut at the beast’s arm, the very arm that had him held firm. She managed to cut the beast as it roared, and punt her across the room with his leg. Its grip loosening just enough for Leo to slip his arm free and cut the fingers holding him in place.

Leo fell on ground as the creature roared again, stumbling backwards clenching its hand. As Leo his the solid floor his cried out, blood leaking from his mouth as a sharp pain shot throughout his body. It was still hard to breathe even though the beast had let go. He attempted to pick himself up off the ground, He felt the pain more specifically emanate from his left arm. He slowly glanced over to his arm, and realized he was unable to move it. Leo picked himself up, sword in hand and backed away from the creature still reeling in pain.

With a quick glance around the room, Leo could see the elven mages casting minor spells at the black king, who was kneeling on the ground, using his only remaining hand to cast a barrier around himself.
Thea was curled up by the doorway leading downstairs, The wall she had been kicked into dented in her petite figure. He could see her squirming from where he stood. She was still alive. The large beast turned towards Leo, Eager to finish the job.

Sure, if enough people want it that way. But a few things to note.

1. A lot of development from anons went into this character. Its a pretty big loss.
2. His death will effect the world [course of the war] in a big way.
3. The next character will most likely be generated some years in the future [in universe] due to every named character being dead. [If Leo dies, Thea certainly isn't getting away.]

Hey Boo, baby, I got a meta question for you

I used to be a real avid Crusader Kings 2 player and a hobbyist modder. I'm on the road for today and am going to be working a ton when I get home, but sometime I'd like to get your permission to make a GQ Mod for CK2. I'd need a good bit of your help fleshing out the world at large if you're interested. If not nbd.
>>

i could get together with you to do something like that. I have no problem with you doing it anyways. It would actually be a real big honor that you think the quest is worth putting that much time and effort into. Im not exactly the move available of fellows though, so it would take some work to find a lot of time to sit down for it [overtime, moving, medical stuff, ect.], but if you can be patient with me on that, we can make it work.

Leo turned around and ran for the doorway. He quickly turned around and shouted at the elves to hurry and make their escape, but it was far too late. As they ceased their magic and turned around to start running, the huge monster grabbed the elven girl as she shrieked in terror. It played with her like a ragdoll before forcibly shoving her down into his maw as it snapped shut. She begged and pleaded, screaming for help as the monster slowly crushed her to bits. Leo watched in horror as the life had drained from her being, as he snapped back to his senses and looked towards the other mage, Motioning to hurry before the monster had finished its meal.

As the male mage attempted to get away from the enemy, He was stopped as a sword had been shoved through his chest from behind. With nothing to stop or delay the black king, and the enemy dominating the battle, He had swiftly moved to put an end to the mages who had tied him up. The man choked and gagged, as he stood motionless, gazing down into the blade that had run him through. After suffering for a while, the black king swung his blade vertically downwards, splitting the elf in half. His guts spilled out as he body tore apart, With one final scream he collapsed onto the ground in a miserable heap, before likely falling unconscious.

Leo had panicked. In all this time he had merely sat and observed as these horrible creatures had savagely and ruthlessly tore apart the last of the elves he could call ally. Coming back to his senses, he turned to Thea who was attempting to get herself up. She was struggling and bleeding from somewhere on her body, as a small pool had gathered beneath her stomach.
The hulking beast of flesh was busy chewing his food, as the black king was admiring his handiwork. And as he looked at the grizzly scene, one thing sprang to Leo’s mind. How if there had been any backup, any additional help from the army below how this all could have been avoided. If and when Leo found out who was responsible for ignoring their pleas, He would have his revenge.

Hey Op can we change our vote? If we can i would like to change mine to attacking and bying Thea some time.
>>
so it's currently
4 votes, average 42.75 for helping thea escape and
2 votes, average 86 for attacking
Metagaming, if >>134902 changes the vote it would be a tie with an average of 84.6 on one side
>>
>>135012
Attack so we dont die.
>>
>>135012
It's also 57 and change as an overall vote, which is what Baeqst's been doing
>>
>>135008
Are you sure?
I'll say what i said before without spoilers this time.

Rolls come secondary to the choices being made. An average of 90 to punch a demon in the face does a lot less good for the characters than an average of 50 to use a warhammer to attack.

If you really want to change your vote, You can.
>>
>>135032
Hmmm i see... I will keep my vote the same but make our life a priority. If we both cant survive then atleast one us has to survive(and that is us because we are the MC).
>>
>>135047
then I change my vote and roll (100) to escaping, it's till >50 that way
>>
>>135047
>>135066
with that, -writing-
average roll: 54.2

This isn't to say that an 86 to attack wouldn't have worked as described. His attack certainly would have been a huge success with that roll, and Thea would get away. but that doesn't mean he'd survive what comes afterwards, with only one arm and broken ribs.

As the dying elves served as a distraction, Leo rushed over to Thea’s side in an attempt to help her escape with him. He felt that pain again as he remembered his left arm was completely useless. He sheathed his silver short sword and used his good arm to help her to her feet. She groaned in agony being forcefully lifted to her feet as Leo hurriedly asked “Are you alright? Can you run?”

She nodded her head keeping an arm wrapped around Leo’s shoulder as they began to make their way down the stairs as quickly as possible. Leo had to slow his pace to match Thea’s while avoiding getting them both thrown down the stairwell. In Leo’s current condition, who knows what bones would go where if he just started falling and tumbling all over the place? Glancing over his shouldn’t Leo couldn’t see either of them in pursuit.

After making it about halfway down the stairs Leo could hear loud thumping sounds from behind them. Somehow, Someway that massive beast got into the stairwell and was after them. They had so many stairs to descend, and so many injuries between them both. Leo could feel Thea starting to slow down as they made their way further and further down. It wasn’t much longer before they had reached the fourth floor. As they stumbled through the room, Leo took one last look over at Gregory who looked just as peaceful as ever.

As they made their way down the next set of stairs, Leo could feel Thea’s pace starting to slow. He looked over to her and saw her face stricken with pain. The blood running down her stomach and legs had now stained Leo’s garments. He didn’t notice she was bleeding this much before. Had this been from all the strenuous running? They had so much more distance to cover, and there was still no sign of the reinforcements they so desperately needed.
However, Leo couldn’t hear the sounds of the huge monster anymore. Perhaps they had stopped giving chase.

After hearing Thea shriek in pain trying to keep up, Leo stopped for a moment and remained silent. Thea looked over their shoulder to see if anything was approaching as the two held their breath to listen for anything they could, but there wasn’t a sound.
“Are you alright to just stand on your own Thea?” Leo asked.
“I should… I should be okay..” she murmured back.

Leo took the brief pause to check the seriousness of his injuries. His arm was broken, without any doubt. His chest constantly ached with each breath he took, and he couldn’t take as big a breath as he used too anymore. He felt like he was constantly winded as he struggled to draw in air, But he wasn’t bleeding extensively from anywhere, so his life wasn’t in any immediate danger. He took a look over at Thea asking “Are you alright?” Seeing as she had already removed her breastplate and was looking over herself.
“Can..can you take a look? I can’t bend over like this..” She softly spoke, as she raised her shirt slightly. Leo crouched down and immediately saw the gaping wound in her hip. It looked like she had been impaled on something, Most likely a fragment of wood when she was booted across the room.

“Yeah, you’ve got a pretty good sized hole in you..” Leo said, as he tore off his left sleeve, and began to use it as a bandage for her. “Just hold still, I’ve got it.”. Again, Leo’s broken arm had slipped his mind, but he had already given his word. Leo clenched one end of the makeshift bandage with his teeth and wrapped it around her with his good arm, pulling himself rather close to her stomach. After a good amount of awkward twists and turns, of both face an arm, He managed to tighten tie the bandage to her.
“That good?” he asked.
“I think that’s alright, Thank you. Now let’s hurry.” She quickly replied.

Supporting each other once more, they began to head down the staircase. Their pace had been slower since there was no sign of the enemy chasing after them. They must have been content with defending the portal, and who knows how many more of those monsters would end up pouring through its gates. They had done all they could, and lost far too many lives in the attempt.

As they continued down the stairs Leo figured he should ask.
“So, what’s next after we get out of here..”
Thea slowly turned a head towards Leo and then looked back down the stairway to watch her footing.

“Well, first thing I’m going to do is find out why we’re the only ones securing this godforsaken tower. I’m going to find out why exactly our forces thought it would be a good idea to ignore the request of one of their royal officers. The blood of our comrades is on their hands.” Thea then took a pause.
Leo could see tears welling up in Thea’s eyes as she mentioned her allies. He had no idea how close they had been. The royal knights while elitist, always seemed to treat one another like family. They held each other in very high regards and Leo couldn’t begin to imagine how that felt. He had lost Gregory, But she had lost an entire family.

“Once we establish that, we’re going to take the largest force we can assemble and rip apart every single thing that’s hold up in that place. I’m also extremely tempted to just get a magic division together to blow that tree into kingdom come, but that would take too long to get here.” Thea said angrily. She shook her head for a moment and put a hand to her wound before she continued.

“Before all that though, I’m going to request that you be knighted and sworn into the royal regiments. Then both you and I will need to get these wounds treated.” She said.

“Knight!?” Leo replied. It came as a complete shock that she thought he was worthy of being a part of the royals. All Leo thought he had accomplished today was getting a bunch of men killed, and watching as others died in his stead. He had contributed only a fraction of the work the knights and Thea had put into the battle. He wanted to object to the notion but Thea had cut him off from doing so.

“You really showed your true colors in there today. We did everything we could, and went as far as our strength would allow. There’s nothing to be ashamed of. A lesser man would have fled at the first opportunity he had, but you carried the torch Leo.” Thea gently remarked.

“Well… if you honestly think so, then I have no right to refuse you.”
It wasn’t much later that the two had made it to the steps outside the tree, but what they saw was horrifying. The sky had run red, littered with a few black clouds. The army was engaged in an all-out battle, both elf and human alike fighting off twisted monsters of flesh and bone, what could only be described as demons soared through the air, picking off men and dropping them to their doom. Complete Chaos. At the bottom of the steps, two horses yet remained.

>Help Thea to the horses as fast as possible and have her lead the way.

“I don’t believe it…”
Thea’s words cut straight into Leo’s heart. This would explain why there had been no reinforcements. The army had been doing battle with these monsters this whole time? Since back when they sent their comrade outside? Leo took a quick glance around the battlefield from their elevated position. The fighting was scattered throughout the city in small pockets. Men running and leading these gargantuan creatures away from each other to avoid being smacked down simultaneously. Archers and mages attempting to hurl projectiles at the enemy, but being rushed down by strange flying creatures.

What appeared to be humanoid figures dressed in flesh-like armor with red decorations, wielding large serrated weapons. Other creatures roamed about with large steel blades for arms, giant steel boulders for firsts, and all sorts of strange and bizarrely shaped weaponry. The army wasn’t in retreat, But their enemy was spread out all across the city and the surrounding fields. Royals and draftee’s littered the battlefield, as the grass ran red with blood, and light.

Leo quickly crouched down and signaled Thea to do the same. “We have to find somewhere to hide, We can’t run into the enemy in our condition.” Leo whispered. Thea simply nodded her head as the two slowly descended the stairway, doing their best to remain hidden. Once they reached the final step, they quickly turned the corner and walked along the tree’s roots, and began to circle around the trunk, looking for the safest and most concealed route to a nearby building.

Once they had found the safest path, they quickly darted through the clearing and crawled their way through shrubbery and debris alike until they reached a small ruined home. The doorway was facing another nearby building and the area was rather confined and closed in, some ways away from any open spaces. It would serve as a good place to hide out, preventing the larger beasts and winged creatures from reaching the area. If they could just get a moment to rest, Leo would feel much more confident about their chances. Thea was largely uninjured aside from the puncture wound, But Leo was in bad shape. It hurt to breath, his arm was shattered and he was extremely exhausted.

The two both peered out of the doorway to make sure nothing had seen or followed them, before they retreated into the building, finding a small room, and shutting themselves off from the chaos outside.

>>135945
Honestly now, did you give us a fair shake at closing out the demons this early in the quest or were you stacking things a bit against us?

And are you, personally, happy with the current averaging system for rolls? It seems like if you slid the scale back by even 5 points (45-55 bracket rather than 50-60) there's a few major rolls that would have gone much better the last two threads.

Not trying to make you change things, just want your thoughts on things so far. Didn't you say GQ's the first quest you've run?

Very nice drawing though, thank you.

>>135991
1- i haven't been lurking for years so i wouldn't know.
2- today was fun anyways.
3- I'm still debating how to do things. I've already stated that i'm pretty opposed to a "first come first served." sort of thing, and "best roll out of X posts" leaves things generally far less dangerous.
If you have a better suggestion i'll hear it. I know that no system is perfect but i can admit there is room for improvement for sure.
>>
>>136010
Well, i'll start off by saying war is never fair. Closing the portal was a possibility, But the enemy held the advantage, But anon never had to keep trying to fight after one, two, three, four casualties and then some, but half the fun for me is seeing which way the pendulum swings.
Nobody can know in a battle if the choice they made was the right one. Hindsight is 20-20, but in the heat of the moment you can only do what you think is best.
id like to make that apply to the thread in a small way.

Also, i'm alright with the roll system so far. I might scale back the DC's to sets of 5 instead of 10 because you're right about that. I'm still pretty open and on the fence about what system to use permanently.

Also, yes this is my first quest. ever. on any board.
>>
>>136046

>>
>>136046
Happy birthday Bee.
Also Boo, concerning the "best roll is less dangerous", you just have to pic the right DC for a "best of X" roll, you can play around with anydice.com to find what you want. Even if I don't like averaging rolls, I still like the way you write the quest, it's captivating.

>>136182
I believe it was thread 1 where a soldier mentioned that after taking the capitol, which would pincer the elves between the Human Torch and the Sea, that they'd basically have wiped out all/most of the elves on THIS continent. Granted it's a soldier speculating but I'd bet there's more elves elsewhere.
>>
>>136150
i'll give it a shot going forward, thanks for the link and the compliment.

>>136133
Haven't given it much thought. Most likely Monotheistic. Elves leaning towards polytheistic.
>>136182
Again, its a subject i haven't dived deep into yet. But currently the blueprint is there are multiple kingdoms, but each race has their "king of kings".
but it is confirmed the world is composed of multiple continents, though and there's no word of how the conquest is going on them.
its all subject to change until it gets mentioned in character.

Phone's gonna die here soon because it won't charge over 50% atm so one last question. Feel free to not give a straight answer if it's too spoilery, but I'll end up asking it when I get to making the mod.
Tree was basically a font of pure mana, right? Wasn't it also mentioned to be essentially the birthplace of the kingdom/race or something? If yes, do other races have the same-but-different kind of area in their homelands?
>>
>>136046
If you really want averages then at least split them from votes
I don't think a single person likes them being bound to votes
>>
>>136263
the great tree [Well of life] was indeed overflowing with Mana. It was revered as the birthplace of the elves, but that part is just myth. I didnt come up with why its overflowing with mana yet. blah blah blah ancient times yada yada most likely.
Every kingdom has their own respective holy sites / places of power.
>>
>>136346
Just make old living things gather more mana
The fact that there's portal to hell at top of it could work too

I could just have everyone do votes and i be the only one rolling outcomes.
what i'm not going to be doing is straight up let rolls determine course of action.
[anon rolled a 100 to throw down your weapons and punch demons in the face, tough luck lads.]
I might try playing around with best of X rolls this time around to see how it fits though.

Speaking of, Next session in about 3 hours.
>>
>>139790
The OP rolling the dice is very frowned upon (except for tiebreaking rolls) because it feels like railroading. Even though there is no mechanical difference who rolls, it makes the players feel like they don't have much influence.
>>
>>139796
Which is understandable and id rather not.

I'm thinking anon >>137052 is just one of them folk i won't be able to satisfy, because what i do want above all else is for a majority of anons to have influence over the choices made, instead of a lucky anon getting his through rolling.

I dunno.
>>
>>139790
I think we are talking about different things
My biggest problem is how rolls are connected to what action we are taking
For example if someone votes to suck demon dick and rolls 90 the roll would still count even though some other action was chosen
>>
>>139984
Fuck I need sleep
What I actually meant is how rolls that aren't for choice that was chosen are completely ignored
That's the problem for me
>>
>>139992
Mk.
in that case, would you prefer that an average of ALL ROLLS be counted during a combat scenario? and that i instead adjust DC's to accommodate?
or
a best of first three, or all rolls made with varying DC's.
>>
>>140004
Doesn't really matter as long as votes aren't connected with rolls

Leo found himself floating within a dark void. Unable to see or feel anything. In the distance, a small blue sphere immerged and began to float towards him. As it approached, the blue light grew brighter and brighter before stopping only a few feet away. The sphere was as tall as he was, and a good number of times wider. Leo looked onwards in awe of its magnificent color, until a small crack appeared at the top. A blue liquid began to spray out from the orb, as many more cracks and holes began to spring forth. Leo unable to move, only observed as the orb lost its blue light, fading away slowly until he found himself again surrounded by nothingness.

Leo awoke and brought his hands to his head, massaging his brow, and wiping away the drowsiness. His arm was still hurting, but at least he could move it now. Thea had used the last bit of her strength yesterday to erect some sort of barrier. The barrier had healing properties to it, and all those inside benefit from rapid recovery, so she said.
He had watched her sit in the corner of the room, motionless with staff in hand for what had seemed like hours before finally drifting to sleep. Who knows how much sleep she managed to get after having to perform such a tedious task? In her own words, she wasn’t as skilled as the dedicated healers back in the medical area of the encampment. Hopefully it would be enough to see them through anything they would encounter.

Luckily, anything that happened across the building they were in passed by without searching thoroughly. Leo quickly glanced out the main entrance to the building to see if anything or anyone was nearby before heading back inside and asking.
“What do we do now? Where do we even go at this point?”

Thea then pulled out a small map from one of her various pouches, spreading it out before explaining.
“There was a rally point set up encase the army was pushed back or defeated. Standard procedure, we have to make it back to the main force and find out what our situation is. There are also multiple forts located further beyond our rally point, if it too has been compromised.”

“It sounds like most of the fighting has come to a stop.. I wouldn’t bet on our side having won the engagement..” Leo replied, as the two began to make their way through the maze of buildings and walkways. Nothing but the sounds of their footsteps filled the air, but looking above, the sky was still filled with black clouds and red lights.

Leo led the way as the duo slowly creeped their way out of the mass of buildings. As they ventured out away from the city, they could see that the army of monsters had been the victors. Bodies littered the field, and multiple beasts still roamed around aimlessly, keeping any eye out for any prey that might wander into their clutches. The flying creatures they had seen as they exited the tree were no longer patrolling the air, and Through a series of careful timing, crawling, hiding, and running, the two managed to make it far enough away from the capital that no demons were in sight. They had just narrowly avoided being spotted on multiple occasions.

As they made their way further out from the city, the skies began to clear and look normal again. They found themselves in the middle of the elven wilderness, as the sounds and sights of nature surrounded them, and the chaos and fear of battle was left behind. A huge sigh of relief escaped Leo. He was much more at ease with only having to worry about the large and dangerous animals of the forest then be constantly on edge, expecting some massive oozing monstrosity to be right around the corner. It had been the first real sense of relaxation he had in a long time. Even back in camp he always felt tense, but after the nightmare he had just went through, the troubles of the past seemed so distant and petty.
“So, just how far will we have to go to reach this rally point?” Leo asked.
“Well, assuming we don’t run into any trouble, the better part of two days.” Thea remarked.

“TWO DAYS?!” Leo sputtered. Just how far back was this place at? It had only taken them little more than half a day to mobilize from the previous settlement to the capital, it was almost absurd.

“It was decided that if at any point the enemy was powerful enough to overwhelm our forces, that they would take the offensive to recapture their homeland, So the rendezvous was set up to be ‘out of the way’, so to speak.” Thea explained.

Two days, without any additional provisions other than what they had on them. This would certainly be a first for Leo. Stuck in not only enemy territory, but the dangerous wilds within their territory. The creatures that inhabit these lands were no laughing matter, and posed a serious threat. Especially if they outnumbered the two.

>So how are we going to go about this?
>Will the army still be at the rally point in 2 days?

We gotta get some provisions if we're gonna on a 2 day trek, look out for fruit or water or anything to eat

Although I'd rather we just go back into the tree and assassinate that wretched husk of a elf king :D

Thus, Leo and Thea began their journey through the elven forest. Thea would occasionally pulled out her map and take a quick glance before making slight adjustments in her course. The sun was high in the sky, and the forest was quite humid and warm as they ventured on. Small animals were in abundance, and fruit was seen hanging from a various number of trees as they passed by. The forest itself was quite vibrant and full of life, it truly seemed like they were the ones out of place in the midst of everything.

“Will the army still be at the rally point in two days?” Leo asked, admiring the scenery as they walked.

“Even if the army marches on another location, there will still be some royals there to give us an update on the situation and tell us what’s going on. We’ll take it from there.” She said, still keeping her head fixated on the surroundings.
“We are going to have to fight all the way back up there at some point won’t we..” Leo murmured.

Thea remained silent at the statement for a while before finally speaking. “If that’s what we are ordered to do.” It was apparent neither of them looked forward to having to march back into that hell. Maybe the tides could be turned if the army knew what it was going up against, but it would take a lot more than an army of men in rags and cheap leathers to face down a horde of monsters. And who knew how many more would pass through the gate before they made it back.

As he contemplated their fate, Leo’s stomach began to growl. They hadn’t eaten anything since they had woken up. Having heard Leo’s gut making a fuss, Thea stopped and looked over her shoulder asking, “Wanna find something to eat?”. Leo’s eyes lit up at the proposition, and he quickly surveyed the area for a suitable meal. If he had his pick, he would want something besides fruit or other greens.

As they scoured the area for something to hunt, Leo happened across a boar in a clearing. It hadn’t noticed his presence yet, and Leo quickly motioned Thea over, signing to be quiet as she did. Upon seeing their prey, Thea closed her eyes and raised her staff. Not much later, she thrust her staff forward as a bolt of lightning shot forth, striking the boar as it squealed out in pain, toppling over from the blast. Leo followed up by charging the beast and driving his knife into its skull, putting the poor thing out of its misery. Thea clearly held back as to avoid obliterating the meal they had just secured, And Leo began to get to work skinning the creature.

Pull out our sword and look it over, clean/maintain. it a bit. Look and seem like Leo is contemplating something. Then hopefully Thea will ask about the sword and where we got it.
Leo: Its Gregory sword
Thea: One of the Royal's we came across up in the tree?
Leo:Yeah.
Thea: I'm sorry.
........
Thea: what is troubling you?
Leo: I... Made a promise to Gregory. I promised to give this sword back to his family, and a letter. One of us had to survive. I'm ... I know I cannot go now after seeing what happened back in the tree. Too much is at stake and this sword's magic can harm them. But.... I....Sigh*, cannot leave this battle, who knows what will happen if we don't put a stop to all the monsters coming out of that portal.

So something like that above, mix and match or keep the tone or essence of it. I'm kinda not in a good mental state to be writing.
My overall goal is to tell Thea a bit about us and the sword, our promise and stuff in case we die.

After skinning the boar and cutting it into portions, Leo went off to gather some twigs and shrubbery to start a fire and begin cooking the meat. He noticed Thea wandering around the area examining berries and other fruits, either tossing them aside or collecting them in one of her pouches, occasionally tossing a few in her mouth. Leo brought back the supplies to make a fire and got one started with ease. He had been through basic survival training prior to being sent off to battle. He started to cook the meal as Thea continued to pick various greens to eat.

Leo took care to observe his surroundings carefully. There were many wild beasts which preyed upon man and elf alike in these woods. Most of which were just normal animals and creatures which had grown to enormous sizes. Nobody was quite sure what it was that had changed the animals so drastically in these forests, but they served as a natural deterrent from foes seeking to wage war. Many of the conscripted had lost their lives to these creatures. Claws sharp enough to shred steel, quick enough to chase down a horse, Jaws strong enough to split men in half.

There had even been the occasional sighting of mythical creatures roaming the forest, from ogres to minotaur, Catoblepas, the list went on and on. Who knew how much of it was even true. All sorts of myth and legend had surrounded the woods surrounding elven lands. Luckily Leo hadn’t seen any signs of such horrid creatures anywhere nearby. Their tracks often gave away their presence, just from the sheer size of the creatures alone. Anything that wasn’t big enough to leave a huge imprint on the ground would most likely be no match for the combined efforts of Thea and himself.

As Thea came over and took a seat, they shared the fruits of their labor and had a hearty and well balanced meal. Leo’s thirst had been largely quenched by the various bundles of fruit Thea had gathered, and after the meal was finished, he used whatever he could to pack away and store as much food as possible for the journey ahead.
“That was very good, thank you Leo” Thea said, with a smile stretched across her face. It felt good to receive a small amount of praise. It was quite uncommon to hear for those serving in the draft.
“Yeah… Thanks for the help Thea.” Leo replied.

“I’m going to make some graves for those we had lost yesterday, if we have the time.” Leo said. Thea nodded in approval while meekly saying “I’d really appreciate that..”
Leo began to dig small graves, and marked them with the sturdiest branches he could find as Thea toss small trinkets and objects into them. Gifts from her comrades perhaps? Leo wasn’t sure. But after he had made 8 graves, Leo gave one final salute to the dead who had helped them make it out of that nightmare.

As the two stood by the graves and paid their respects, Leo asked,
“How well did you know them?”

Thea continued to stare into the ground for a while before saying anything.
“They were like family to me. We had been serving together since I first joined the royal army 3 years ago. I had always been very interested in Mana and magic. I spent my whole life learning and mastering what I could. The royals are rather starved for mages at the moment, So I was accepted into the fold pretty quickly.. The first mission we ever went on together I was such a burden. Always hesitating, Losing my concentration.. but even then, they still stood by my side. Keeping me out of harm’s way. They deserved better than this..”

Leo nodded and kept his head down. He had lost someone just as close to him that day, and it wasn’t easy to think about. He couldn’t stop wondering if he had only done things differently if Gregory would still be alive.
“Were you two close?” Thea asked.

“Who?... Oh.. yeah.. Gregory and I were pretty close.. We both got drafted at about the same time.. Found ourselves in the same training unit. He looked out for me, I looked out for him. Spending that much time together, we ended up being friends. He helped me out a lot.. This chainmail, this sword.. He gave me so much and yet.. I was never truly able to repay him.. But he did ask me to do one thing..” Leo explained.

“which is..?” Thea asked.

“This silver sword… He wanted me to deliver it to his family if anything were to happen to him, all the way back in Wakemire. I had been so worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep that promise.. Hell, I still might not be able too.. Who knows when this chaos will end, and when we will be allowed to return home.”
Thea’s shoulders slumped as he finished. They both knew that the war would wage on far longer than it should have given recent events, and their lives would be put on the line once more to face down such horrible creations.

The two stood silently looking over the makeshift graves. Looking back on fond memories, and forward to the grim future. Who knew what lay in store for them both.

Leo’s legs were killing him. Constantly having to walk over branches, avoiding tripping on roots and vines constantly, He found himself staring at the ground most of the way, before realizing Thea had made an unexpected turn and he was about to wander off into the wilderness by himself. The elves had often created paths free of such difficult terrain, but such roads would be unsafe to follow, so they marched on and on through the thick of it.

The supplies they had gathered earlier in the day would most likely last the rest of the trip, which was a good thing considering how far they had to go. The first day was drawing to a close as the sun was setting in the sky. They would keep moving until it almost became too dark to see before settling down for the night. That was the plan anyways. They had to make the most of the time they had. The sooner they could reunite with the main force the better. The last thing they wanted to do was reach the rally point, only to be told that ‘the army had marched on some settlement 2 days away on horseback, have fun walking.’

The one thing that made this at all bearable was the fact that Thea was actually quite talkative. She had never really been one for words when magic was flying and swords were clashing, the complete opposite in fact. She was like a whole different person on the battlefield, constantly focused on the mission, doing whatever it takes to seize the objective. Putting her life on the line every step of the way. It was quite admirable, and it made her recommendation that Leo was worthy of becoming a royal knight mean that much more. He looked forward to actually understanding what they were fighting for, how they were going to go about it, and being outfitted with more than hand-me-downs from second rate craftsmen. His faulty gear would have most certainly gotten him killed outright.

He couldn’t help but think back to Gregory. It if hadn’t been for his help, Leo wouldn’t be here right now. The chainmail and sword had kept him alive without any doubt. He deserved better than to be left to rot in that tree. Or even worse, be consumed by those foul creatures. Anything to get his mind off it would be enough.

The sky was shining a brilliant shade of orange with the setting sun, as Leo looked over to Thea and asked.
“Think we should find some sort of suitable shelter?"
Thea stopped walking for a moment and stood still. After a while she spun around saying, “In the middle of a forest? Unless we start to build something out of branches I doubt we’ll actually find anything useful. We really don’t have time for that.”

Well, she was right. The forest was quite dense, and it’s not like massive hollow trees were scattered around that you could just waltz right up into. A simple fire would have to suffice. Hopefully it wouldn’t start raining before they had a good night’s rest. The canopy of the elven woods was also quite thick and lush, It would help stave off the elements.

Leo continued to strike up conversation to pass the time.
“So how did you end up as a part of this war anyways?”
Thea took a look up at the sky, before slowly making her way over to a nearby log and taking a seat. Leo followed suit and took a seat next to her as she explained.

“Well.. It wasn’t by choice, you can be sure of that. Being part of such an “elite” unit practically guaranteed that we would be thrust into the middle of it. I first became a part of the elven conquest 2 years ago, only a year after joining the royals. I tried to tell myself that if I was at least a part of the war, I could help save the lives of our people… My friends.. those closest to me… I was pretty naïve, huh..” Her tone had turned sour pretty quickly, but Leo knew how she felt. It was the same feeling he had been struggling with since they got away from that great tree.
“I don’t think its fair to say that.. There was no way to know how things were going to turn out.. Nobody would have ever even imagined this outcome.. The war should have been over by now..”
Leo couldn’t find the right words to say. No matter how many scenario’s he ran through his head, there wasn’t anything he could be told that would make him feel better about it, so what chance did he have of raising her spirits.

“Do you think it makes us the bad guys here? What we’ve had to do.” Leo said. He couldn’t break his train of thought, Having heard the sadness in her voice just stirred up all the unanswered questions that had been eating away at him since he began to carry those sins upon his back.

Thea looked confused as he asked that question however.
“Well… it’s a war. Who aren’t the bad guys in all this?
Oh of course.. How could he forget. The royals got to sit back at the encampment after the elven army had been defeated. It was left to the draftee’s to do the kings dirty work, Slaughtering everyone who remained. The royals never had to sully their blades on such defenseless creatures.

Leo contemplated telling her the full story. What exactly was expected of the conscripted to perform in the line of duty, but he felt he had dragged her down enough.
“Yeah.. That’s true I suppose. Both sides are at fault.” Even though Leo hardly believed that in his heart. He decided to bring up more pressing matters to take his mind off it.
“Do you have any idea what kind of threat those foul demons pose to the kingdom?”
Thea took a moment to consider the facts. Before slowly responding.

“In all honesty, it depends on how large their force is. The army is no stranger to fighting mythical beast of tremendous stature, but if the enemy manages to amass a large number of those creatures, and mounted a coordinated strike against the kingdom.. We would end up in serious danger. Our fortresses don’t have nearly enough siege weapons to prevent such an attack. But.. I think I saw only one creature measuring up to that size when we left the great tree. I just can’t be sure.”

She had a good point. The army was quite massive, and Leo knew the king was choosing to withhold decent equipment from the conscripted, It wasn’t a matter of not being able to afford it, or a lack of resources. The kingdom was quite large, and well known for its wealth. It had little to fear from its neighboring civilizations, and as a result, had little need to build up massive defenses. The sheer size of the military was enough to deter aggressors.

“Do you know why, or how we got into a war with the elves? Those drafted into the battle are treated so callously that they don’t even attempt to motivate us, or even provide reason to risk our lives, outside of the threats of punishment against our families should we refuse.”

Thea shook her head before taking a look down at the ground.
“The war was going on well before you and I were even born. Anything anyone has ever told us about it is only hearsay. If you believe the officials, it’s because the elves were responsible for causing the entire population of the holy city of Stratham to disappear overnight. I’m actually starting to believe it.”

“So… is there anyone waiting for you back home?..” Leo asked.
Thea again just shook her head, frown upon her face. Leo slumped forward and stared at the ground. Who knew when he would be able to see his family again? Maybe they had already assumed he was dead. It had been so long since he saw them, or even knew if they were safe.
The sun was almost completely set, there was barely enough light to see.

Realizing just how dark it had gotten, Leo quickly scrambled about to gather enough sticks and shrubs to start a small fire before they went completely blind. Thea giggled at the display as Leo tripped and stumbled about in the dark, Unable to light the fire before darkness had enveloped them both. Not a moment later, Thea held her staff upright and a blue light began to emit from the crystal fixated at the top. It provided enough light for Leo to finish assembling the pieces of wood and bush, and start the fight nearby the log they had sit down on.

The nights in the elven woods ended up getting quite cold, in complete contrast to how hot it would get during the day. It made the fire that much more comforting, and Leo found himself quite exhausted from the entire ordeal. It had been a long time since Leo got a decent nights rest. He always woke up tired and feeling exhausted, His nightmares constantly waking him in the middle of the night. The rhythm of the crackling fire soothing his mind.

“So what do you think happened to the reinforcements? Could the demons outside somehow be related to why they didn’t show up?” Leo asked.
Thea shrugged.
“I think that would have to be it. Something similar at the very least. There’s no reason to believe that the elves had an army sizable enough to fend off the forces coming from the west.. If only they had been there…”

We might have come out of that conflict victorious. Or even prevent the opening of that god forsaken portal. The two remained silent for a while, admiring the flames flickering and growing before them as Leo would toss the occasionally stick into the blaze. The night had grown incredibly loud, as insects sang their songs, and wolves could be heard howling in the distance. Through a crack in the trees, Leo could see that the moons were full tonight. Side by side, almost hugging each other in the night sky. It was a pleasant scene.

“I’ll be on first watch, go ahead and get some rest.”
Thea smiled slightly saying, “I appreciate that Leo. I know your arm must still be bothering you a lot.”
“It’s nothing I can’t handle, don’t worry.” Leo remarked, as he stood up and began to wander about collecting more fuel for the fire. “What about you? How are your wounds doing?”

As Leo glanced over at Thea he noticed her flexing as she said “Oh yeah! I’m doing so much better after that good night’s rest back in the city. I don’t think anything would have woke me up from that slumber. It actually healed over quite nicely. I thought it would have left a scar..” She said, lifting her shirt and chainmail examining her side.

Leo shook his head, unable to conceal his smile at the good news. She had looked so battered when they first made it out of the tower, it was a big relief to know that she was in such good condition. Leo’s arm was in fact still hurting a good amount, even after all the time spent under the healing barrier. That Monster had a serious grip to it. Leo felt quite lucky to be alive after all that.

“That reminds me, Is there any sort of magical alarm or barrier you can set before we call it a night?”
“Not without standing motionless in place for several hours.. sorry.” She replied.
“I guess you aren’t a miracle worker after all.” His comment was met with a loud “heeeeyyy” before the two laughed it off. The atmosphere was quite relaxed. A lot of the tension had been lifted from Leo when she mentioned her desire to have him enlisted in the Royal Regiments. He actually found himself able to relax regardless of the circumstances.

“I hope we can bring an end to this war.. I can’t help but worry about my family back home.” Leo muttered. Every night seemed to evoke the same feelings in the back of his mind. He wondered what they must be thinking.
“Me too. It wasn’t right for you and everyone else to be torn away from people so precious.. it wasn’t even necessary.. but It’s good that you still have people waiting for you..” Thea softly replied.

In the silence that followed, Thea gently laid herself down, fidgeting and squirming in an attempt to get comfortable. Leo thought it was rather cute watching her huff and puff, rolling around before finally settling in. Leo had been used to such poor conditions, and wouldn’t have any trouble quickly nodding off once his shift was over. He had seen the tents set up in the Royal regiment’s end of the encampment, and things were quite luxurious in comparison to the cold hard ground.

The night seemed to move quickly, as Leo soon found it was his turn to rest.

Leo found himself standing outside of the great tree. Armed with his silver sword, a suit of full plate steel and a tower shield, Leo looked over the elven capital. It was overrun with demons and horrific abominations of flesh and metal. Behind him stood an army of knights and mages, Thea stood among them. Looking beneath himself, He was mounted upon a mountain of corpses, both man and elf alike. But the body that was most out of place was that of the elven girl he had so viciously put down.

Fueled by rage, Leo charged onward into the city. The citadel echoed with the sound of a legion of men rampaging through the fields, storming the vile creatures as one giant wave of agony, consuming everything in its wake. Leo cut down each and every towering beast that approached him, reveling in the blood that showered down onto him. The men he led roared out in victory, stained with the gore of the mutated hulking beasts which ruled this once proud city. The monsters looked to escape, desired life so desperately, But found no mercy. Leo’s thirst for death could not be quenched.

With each and every kill, every monster slain, it became harder and harder to resist. The urge to devour that which had torn life from so many across all time and space. From his best friend. As he cut his way through the ranks of his enemy, Leo raised his visor and drank the blood of the demons showering down upon him. The battlefield was consumed in a mist of gore, painting the scene red, filling Leo with strength he could never have imagined possible. The sunlight struggled to pierce through the cloud of flesh and blood.

Leo ascended the tower alone, cutting down every meager threat that stood in his way. Upon the 5th floor, he found the black king. Waiting silently. Without any hesitation, Leo roared out in a voice that was not his own. Splitting the vile king in half, covering himself in ash. Leo charged up the final set of stairs leading to the blasted portal which had put a curse on existence itself. He cut apart the portal with a relentless barrage of swings and shouts. His cries pierced the heavens and the clouds exploded outwards, and Leo looked over the city he had conquered. Leo stood alone atop the tower of death. The well of chaos. The army, nowhere to be found.

Leo found himself on a farm. A farm that had been most familiar to him. Was it his? A small home stood in the distance. As he approached the small house, two people stood at the front door. Their faces, ripe with terror and fear. They fled from Leo’s presence, as he looked into a pond that had spawned before him.
In the reflection, was a man shaped similar to Leo, but one whose flesh had partially melted. Held in place through large metal pins and steel staples. His mouth, filled with an assortment of blades that barely resembled teeth.

As he awoke on the ground, sun in his eyes.
“Good morning Leo, sleep well?”

that was the last update for this session, but doing something a little different this time.

unscheduled updates may occur between now and the next "session" [aka when i'm sitting here with the thread open], if any votes happen to be present in the thread.

going to try this out mostly because i'm about to be swamped with overtime at my workplace, and because i'm working 12 hour nightshifts. That means we won't have as many days to push out 6-12 hour runs, so this is just a small way to get out bits of content now and then to push the story along.

combat situations will now have a minimum number of rolls required, so you wont have to worry about 1 guy who showed up and botched everything during one of these ninja updates. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks for joining fella's.

Leo brought a hand up to keep the morning light out of his eyes while saying, "yeah... Not quite... I had a pretty strange dream. We had made our way back to the great tree, leading the charge i managed to shut the portal. But by the time it was all over, i had changed. My parents ran from me, and i couldnt even recognize myself anymore... But even so, the weirdest part of the whole thing, was that i enjoyed it. I was happy with what i had become. "

Now able to take in his surroundings, Leo took a look over at Thea and saw that she had already been eating for quite some time. Pleanty of bones were scattered about from the meats they had preserved, and she was holding one of the many pouches of fruit and berries she had gathered, occasionally tossing one into her mouth.
"I want to get back at them too.. For what they've done... but don't go turning into one of them alright?"
Leo had completely overlooked how that must have sounded just now. He had almost forggten how half of those nightmares they had fought were once elves too. Was it possible for a human to turn into one of those monsters?
...would they enjoy it? Leo snapped to his senses and hastily replied.
"Oh nonono, i didnt mean it like that. Its just that in the dream i mean, all the killing. Not the.. Uh... Nevermind..." Leo bit his tounge at the embarassing display. Being happy about being a killer was no better.. Right?
"But I won't end up like them." Leo remarked. He couldnt afford too. The vision of horror in his family's face now burned into his mind.

"Well, its about time we got going wouldnt you say?" Thea said, extending an arm to help Leo get up. But as leo took her hand, they both heard the sound of athick branch snapping in two. Followed by the loud thud of somthing BIG.

Sure, but I think it should be done in your thread or a separate one. I'd also prefer to say so in private rather than public.

Thea quickly pulled Leo to his feet as the two hurried behind a nearby tree, looking for the source of the sound. Whatever this thing was, it was approaching fast. Each stepped echoed throughout the area as branches were crushed and dirt kicked up into the air, when the creature finally came into view, it was something Leo could hardly believe. The creature was one of legend, said to have died off centuries ago.

A cockatrice.

A creature that resembled a cross between a dragon or some sort of lizard, and a rooster. What was stunning about the beast wasn’t that it had exist in these woods, but that it was even here at all. There had never been a sighting of such a creature in his lifetime, or his parents lifetime. The things simply shouldn’t exist, yet here it was. Feasting upon the meats left behind by the campsite. There had been so many myths as to what abilities the creature had possessed, and it had been such a long time since Leo had ever heard or read any of them. He knew there was something significant about the creature, but he just couldn’t place his finger on it.

Glancing over at Thea, she merely stood silent. Observing the creature. There was almost a glint of wonder in her eyes. It seemed like she was itching to step forward and touch the creature, but was frozen in place, admiring the beast from a distance as it rummaged through our previsions. But when the thing had gotten its fill, its head snapped up quickly, and head twitching in every direction. It was looking for something, or someone. Was it after us? Had this creature been sent by something to hunt them down? So many questions were buzzing around in Leo’s mind, and he couldn’t come up with the answers.
Battling such a beast of legend would be incredibly risky, But it had not seen them yet, and this may be their only chance. The fiend couldn’t be outran.

Leo quietly bent down to pick up whatever he could find. A small stone happened to lay by his boots. Clasping it tightly and slowly raising up without being seen, He threw the stone as far as he could. As the stone clanked up against several trees before plopping to the ground, the cockatrice immediately reacted and darted off the direction of the sounds. Luckily the creature wasn’t nearly as intelligent as it was dangerous, and Leo quickly motioned to Thea, as the two slowly began to sneak their way in the opposite direction.

After gaining enough distance, Thea began excitedly whispering to Leo.
“Can you believe it? A cockatrice! There hasn’t been a sighting of one since our species had begun recording history! Simply amazing! I never could have imagined id get to see such an ancient creature in my entire life! Ooooohhhhh I wish I could have captured it for study, who knows what kinds of secrets a thing as old as that holds.”
Thea’s eyes almost seemed to sparkle as the rambled on and on about the thing.
“Do you have any idea how dangerous that thing is though?” Leo asked.
“But of course!” Thea quickly exclaimed.
“Good… because I actually have no idea… what are we looking at here?”

“Well, besides having heighted senses compared to your average beast of the same size, several books account that the creature had the power to turn someone into stone with one gaze. Others say that it had the ability to kill things with its breath alone. It would be nearly impossible to know fact from myth considering how nobody has even seen the thing in forever… It’s why I want one so baaaadddllllyyyyy.” Thea whined.

So in reality, she was just as clueless about the damn thing as he was. Then it was good that they had avoided a conflict. Who knew what that thing was actually capable of, and Leo by no means wanted to be the first person to find out.

But it seemed like he wouldn’t have much of a choice.

Leo and Thea again could hear the cockatrice approaching. It somehow was managing to track them, but had yet to catch up at this point. It seemed their little distraction didn’t do too much to drive the thing away, but how was it following them? It had already torn apart all the food they had, and there wasn’t any strong odor coming from either of them.. So what could it have been?

>attempt to run away, getting as much distance as possible.
>Hide and set up an ambush to attack the damn thing.
>Maintain your current pace and try to sneak away from it.
