Ask Languid Anything: ask.fm/HellbornQM

You are Sierra Beckhoff, and after a rough start, your Alcatraz duel with Anatu-allatu is underway. If all goes as planned, you’ll kick the Stygian hordes out your city for good. If all doesn’t go as planned, well, you’re not going to lose, so like, you don’t really need to worry about that.

---

HP: 27/35 (Emerald fire leg wound, broken arm)
PP: 30/47
LW: 13/15

Stress: 50
Fury: 68

Anatu angrily deflects spines from Tiger, slivering slices of her ample magic reserves off to summon wood shields to catch his bolts. (Anatu: -2 PP: 37) When the barrage lifts, she punches a fist in his direction with a shout. “Break!” (Anatu: -3 PP: 34)
>>
>>137470

The spell strikes Tiger through his shadow-self tendril block. A sharp twinge of directionless pain carries over the air, striking the thread of will that connects you to your shadowy Shalbaan. One of his forelegs jerks violently to the side with an audible crack, shattered at the joint. The creature lets out a suffering hiss in response, his assault faltering.

Freed of distraction, Anatu twirls her fiery green spear in the air and readies for another charge.

Looks like you didn’t really have as much time as you thought you did. And the steadily increasing burn in your leg isn’t doing you any favors.

>Retreat to Crabby, put him between you and Anatu and fill her full of holes.
>Retreat to Crabby, use him as a shield while you address your pressing injuries.
>Counter charge Anatu’s charge. Get on her, too close for her to use that spear of hers.
>Call on your circling steam serpents to dive bomb Anatu with what they’ve got left.
>Retreat out of sight into the mist, break contact and try to get the drop on Anatu.
>Stand firm against her charge, use your shield charm to break her momentum.

Alright lads, let's put together a unified plan. Going straight up in a face to face fight with all of our summons didn't work out at all. We need to stick to stealth and shadow, use poison, and our guns. We can't let her keep steamrolling through our assets like this.
>>
Hey just want to say I was a big fan of this back in the day when it was just starting. I'm glad to still seeing it around and look forward to a lengthy archive feed.
>>
>>137547
She's still affected my blood curse. So stalling is best.

But we need to take care of our leg first.

You turn and take off toward Crabby, the huge hulk of bone and muscle flopping himself forward like a beached whale. Anatu perceives your intent and strikes forward in a dead run, raising her spear above her like a javelin.

You’re fast, but on open, even terrain, Anatu’s just that much faster. Stupid six-legged crab demons. You’ll never make it in time. You reach out to the intangible steam snakes still circling above in the mist, and order an airstrike – though with a certain gameplan. The extensions of your will launch into action immediately.

With twin howling shrieks, the boiling incarnations of fury hurl out of the sky and dive for Anatu’s maw.

When they’re just a few feet off, she flickers out of position, revealing her location to be elsewhere.
Without missing a stride, she lashes out with spear to slay the serpents.

But they slither back skyward in the nick of time – you weren’t planning on using them on a suicide run. Their mission was to distract. Just when they pull up, your Ashwight leaps out of the mists and crashes into Anatu’s flank. He hacks and raking his claws across the Heiress, opening wide cuts and tears in her curse-softened carapace. (Anatu: -8 HP: 80)

The sudden attack puts Anatu off center, and she rolls onto her side, taking further strikes from the Ashwight before she’s finally able to bring her spear to bear and force the summon to vanish from her.

As for you, you used the extra time to frog-hop Crabby and direct him to stay between you and Anatu. You have a couple things to figure out, namely your spear-wound. You crouch on the wet stone, cold rain soaked through your jeans. The cut doesn’t so much bleed as it does fizzle. Your blood smokes and evaporates without sealing the injury, the pain piercing straight down to the bone. (+1 Stress: 51) (-1 PP: 25) (-1 HP: 26) (+1 Fury: 69)

The hell is this? You and fire are supposed to be friends. Which means this doesn’t have anything to do with real fire, this is fake magic fire.
>>
>>137961

Magic fire.

You kneel with your leg out and call out to Monster, raising your head to the heavens. “Hex me!”

In reply, your supercharged-imp swoops out of the sky, dropping a corrupting hex right on target. You angle your thigh to the side for maximum impact and lean back, grabbing your fancy enchanted chainmail up out of the way.

The hex shatters over your wound with a reverberating, numbing energy. Pins and needles shoot up and down your body. You pull back and try to insulate your power from the magic EMP. You ride out the hex uncomfortably, but without ill effect as it dissipates like static discharge.

Checking in on things, you find the wound has degraded back to the casual status of a minor, if unsightly, flesh wound. You automatically wonder if it’ll leave some kind of wicked scar. (-2 Stress: 49)

Now’s not the time for deep thought on such important matters, though. Anatu’s back up, though a bit worse for wear. You can scent her blood on the air, the taste of it vibrating with aromatic, savory power. (-1 Stress: 48) (+1 Fury: 70) It drives all sense of fatigue out of your body. You can’t help but let out a giddy laugh at the overwhelming sense of energetic liveliness that washes over you.
>>
>>137967

Anatu’s next maneuver his held up by Crabby. When she attempts to circle around, the armored slogbuh shifts to the side to keep between you and her. When she moves the other way, he flops over in the appropriate direction, his rocky beak snapping at her as he makes angry whale noises.

Impatiently, she again twirls her spear at her side. The fiery green blade whistles hummingly through the air, evaporating any rain that strikes the blade. “Is this how you plan on mastering our realm, hellborn?” she calls out to you. “Running away from every threat? Cowering behind your magics like a hellion?”

The scent of her blood grows ever stronger in the air. How hard did your Ashwight hit her? It calls to you, practically begging for you to taste it. (+2 Fury: 72)

You resist the call for now, however distracting it might be. (+2 Stress: 51) You’re not throwing yourself under her emerald polearm just yet. Instead, you stand and step up onto Crabby’s leathery back and hold up your broken arm for Anatu to see.

The fire in your heart gives your magic an extra bite to it that wasn’t there before, and you chance doing something a bit different. You pull the power from your core and channel it directly into your flesh. You pattern the spell after of how Xanissil taught you, but use more improvisation and instinct than knowledge.

You feel the bones of your upper arm lace back together – it’s a weird and painful sensation. The wounds really seal up, but you feel strength return from your shoulder to your fingertips. (+2 HP: 28) (-10 PP: 15) (-1 Stress: 50) You roll your shoulder, making a point of showing Anatu the process unfold.

“I’ve got Waldric when I want somebody to cower for me,” you tell Anatu. “When I fight I win. If you don’t like it, fuck you.” With that, you lock your eyes on her endlessly twirling spear. You focus in a sheath of negative energy in around her weapon. (-2 PP: 13)

It’s flames sputter and spark, the hue of its shaft darkening and trembling. With a grimacing scowl, Anatu tightens her grip on her weapon with both hands and speaks another word of command. “Back!” (-4 PP: 30)

A great flare of power shocks through the manifest corruption. The black magic turns weak, thin like veiny cobwebs, before receding back from Anatu’s clawed fingertips.

Something strikes you of her expenditure of arcane strength. She is legitimately worried about losing her spear.
>>
>>138439

If she rolled out that much magic every time she countered you, you might be able to bleed her dry by matching will with her over her prized weapon. This could be the turning point in your favor.

>Continue pumping energy into corrupting her spear. At this rate, you’ll outlast her reserves of power – you’ve got wells to fall back on if you bleed yourself dry. She doesn’t.
>Throw more corruption at her spear as a distraction.

“Look who’s cowering behind magic now,” you say. You hold firm on target then, curling tendrils of corruption back over Anatu’s spear with the power of your will.

Anatu fights back with pyrrhic stubbornness. “I said back!” she shouts, her words causing the air to contract with sudden cold.

Your wills meet in the focal point of her spear, the air around it wavering with opposing energy. You narrow your eyes. Anatu tightens her fists and braces herself. You reach out a hand, clenching your own fingers reflexively in mimicking your own mental and physical efforts.

You do not relent.

Neither does Anatu.

Around the cynosure of magic, wind and rain begin spinning, swirling around the both of you like the eye of a storm. Whether it’s the freed energy from opposite spells cancelling each other out or if it’s the brunt force of your attack bleeding through to your landmastery and screwing with the weather, you can’t tell, nor do you care right now.

This is between you and the Heiress, you and the bitch who thought she could screw with you and steal your home out from under your feet. It’s not happening, not today, not ever. Flames of resolve roar up off your back and shoulders as you bow into the current of energy conducting out of your body. (+5 Stress: 55) (+3 Fury: 75) (+1 HP: 29)

You grimace and dredge up every ounce of power, scraping the bottom of your bones for all bits of energy that can go into your magic. Anatu’s fierce, toothsome expression remains set, though becomes increasingly stressed as you both drain yourselves of your reserves.

She cringes back under the direct contest, while your passion and rage drive you only upward and outward.

Your powers falter. (You: 3 PP) Anatu’s fail. (Anatu: 1 PP)

The struggle leaves both of you exhausted. Luckily you’re not the only one on your side. Heaving for breath, you tap your heel on Crabby’s back. “Light her up,” you say hoarsely, sliding off his back and back onto the ground.
>>
>>138843

At your command, Crabby rears up and hocks a loogie of foul mucus at the Heiress.

A beleaguered Anatu widens her eyes and hurls herself to the side. Crabby shifts to the side and spits again. Gasping with naked desperation, the Heiress scrambles and scampers out of the way of the napalm, barely managing to stay ahead of the acidic gunk.

The Ashwight sprints in again at her, springing out of the mist with scything talons hunched up by its face.

Anatu lashes desperately out at the apparition, just in time to make it vanish. But the sudden turn puts too much weight on her Hellhound-mauled leg, and it slips out from under her. She half falls over onto her side, and has to use her hands to stop herself from sprawling out on the watery concrete.

In the mists, she watches the vague form of Tiger prowls past with paranoia, all the while trying to keep an eye on the steaming serpents circling like crows overhead. You feel Anatu’s resolve waver, the mark of fear and weakness biting into her strained aura.

She coughs and wipes the blood from her shoulder and neck where she’s been slashed, uses her spear as a point of balance to get herself back on her feet. “I’ve eaten the hearts of terrors surpassing you and your pets,” says Anatu in a gruff tone, rolling her jaw, giving a brief glance of her several rows of boney teeth. “Yours shall be no different. Surrender and live, creature.”

Confidence quickly seeps back into her, eclipsing the uncertainty of just a moment earlier.

You smirk at her. “I’m not done yet,” you reply. And then you flex your awareness to encompass your disparate landwells scattered across the US – from national forests in Southern California to sand dunes in Canada, you call forth the power that’s pooled from the lands of your dominion.

Power floods back into you from out of the aether. (+10 PP: 13; -5 LW: 7)

Anatu goes rigid as she senses your increasing strength. “How is it done?” she asks, bewildered at the miraculous production of power. “It isn’t possible.” Despite her knowledge of magic, you guess even in Stygia landmasters aren’t so well understood. But you’re not here to teach her about druid stuff. You’re here to beat the hell out of her.

You scoff dismissively in reply. “I’m the Imperiate, I do whatever I fucking please,” you say. With such a pronouncement, you level your baleful gaze at her, lock eye contact, and slam a fistful of terror down her throat. (-2 PP: 11)

Fear cuts lines through Anatu’s confidence in inevitable victory, and her body begins trembling nervously. “Your magic is weak! Your dominion is frail!” she shrieks, grabbing a bulky iron flask from inside her robe and prying at the lid. “I will not break, I will not bow to you, blood-traitorous hoop-licker!” The lid pops free, and white-green emerald flames begin erupting from the top like a geyser. “Burn forever!”

>Throw yourself as far away as physically possible and hit the dirt.
>Corrupting hex the incoming flask.
>Utilize Crabby as meat shield.
>Time for Monster to perform the last clutch interception of the game.
>Activate magic chainmail.
>Attempt to swat the bomb right back at her with a flare of shadow.
>Use most of your freshly gained power to shadow yourself out of the way.

Well the only suggestion I saw was Soul Drinker, so you've got that. But your other 'inscribed spells', like blood puppetry and your other blood magic things like convulsing shock can be cast from HP if you'd like.

All right, so you'll try to bounce the flask back at her, and it that doesn't work, you'll activate crabshield. Roll some dice.

Mediocre, but how hard is it to ping pong a magic bomb or dive under a graboid?

Anyway that'll be it for tonight. You did good.

AKA I'll see you next time. Classes are a little more intense than I expected of spring semester, so I might not run a thread until next Saturday/Sunday.

Thanks for reading, participating, or just lurking if that's your thing.
