“If we don’t do something this thing might be chasing us down forever.” Leo exclaimed.
Leo drew his sword and shield and took cover behind a nearby tree. Thea immediately reacted and held her staff at the ready, beginning to channel her magic. It didn’t take long for the cockatrice to show up, Head twitching and sputtering about, looking for the duo, who stood ready to pounce once the beast was in range.

The moment it was within jumping distance, Leo leapt out from behind a tree and thrust his sword forward, hitting the creature squarely in the upper torso. The cockatrice squawked out in pain as it swiftly leapt away from Leo before cocking its head in his direction. The creature gazed directly into Leo’s eyes as he looked back, but it stood motionless. The bird sat idle at range, staring down Leo, lashing its tail about. It then turned its body and bent its head down, Preparing to charge.

Leo readied himself to leap out of the way, but as he went to bend his knees he felt a sharp pain jolt through his body. He had unexpectedly become completely stiff, tension had built up throughout his entire body, and His joints locked in place, refusing to move. Leo attempted to speak out in his surprise, but found that his lips would not move as he desired. And little more than murmurs and groans escaped his throat. Even his tongue was unable to waggle back and forth.

What was this? Paralysis? No… He could still feel his arm ache, yet he was completely frozen in place, unable to move the slightest inch. Leo desperately tried to move with all his might, his bones straining and muscles aching from being forcibly dislodged from their fixed position. He managed to take all of one step before the cockatrice came barreling towards him at lightning speeds, before being blown away by a torrent of energy.

Thea had launched a continuous bolt of lightning from her staff as she came over to punch him on the shoulder. “What’s wrong with you?! GO!” she shouted, and as her fist connected, Leo felt his body relax and the tension escape him. He was able to move once more, as Thea’s magic came to an end, and the cockatrice stumbled back and forth, a few meters away.

I'm about to start scaling back my voting periods and be more strict with the timing, to push out quicker updates with the limited number of hours i have after work, so its more of a "best of how ever many rolls we get, up to a max of 5."

If we end up hitting 90's too often moving forward, i may tone it down to 3. but i tried to take best of 5 into consideration and the DC is considerably high.

I'm not that concerned with it at the moment. Especially considering how rolls went in the last thread.

As the cockatrice was staggered from Thea’s barrage, Leo quickly lunged forward, holding his blade in both hands as he thrust his silver short sword into the creature’s upper torso. His blade easily sank into his foe, running it through completely as it squeaked out in agony. Its cries turned into little more than a slight hissing escaping its mouth. The cockatrice made no attempt to bite at Leo, instead pulling itself away from his blade and it’s fumbled about, hissing as blood sprayed from its wound and mouth. A loud gurgling and raspy sound emanated from its chest.

The creature continued to stumble around, painting the area red with its blood before finally collapsing into a heap upon the ground, body sprawled out as the thing took its final breaths. Leo’s heart was racing. He didn’t know what had come over him. One moment he was looking down his enemy, and the next he found himself pressed up against the thing, bringing it to deaths door.

Thea stood in awe of Leo’s sudden charge, and quickly ran over to start examining the body of the immaculate being.
“Oh my g… this is amazing. I never dreamed I would be able to see such a thing, I have to write this down! This is huge Leo, you have no idea how important this is!”
Thea could barely manage to get the words out she was so giddy.

“Well, if you’re going to write about the thing, Be sure to put down its ability to stop you dead in your tracks with one look. I could barely move or speak until you hit me, But I could feel every minute of it. It was like I was going to break my bones if I kept trying to force my body to move. It was such a strange sensation.” Leo said.

“Ooooohhhhh, Could that be the petrification those old books referred too? But how could simple eye contact cause you to seize up like that.. Some sort of magic maybe? Oh, this is so exciting!” Thea squealed out in excitement as she continued to ramble incoherently about the thing.
Leo had never seen her so happy or thrilled, especially around something that had just been killed mere moments ago. ‘Such a strange woman’ he thought.
At least the situation had been taken care of. That could have went a lot worse if it played out any differently. Leo could only imagine how horrifying it would be to encounter that thing all by yourself, to be frozen like that as it marches to finish you off, while you stand helplessly..

Leo walked up to Thea as she peered over the creature, skittering about and occasionally sketching or writing something down in a small notebook.
“Say, if that things eyes are still working… Think you could do a transplant?” Leo asked.
Thea had come to a complete stop. Slowly setting down her notebook and standing up before snapping a head quickly in Leo’s direction.
“Nice try, but that wouldn’t work. Having the eyes doesn’t mean you’re muscles or brain would know how to use them. After all, now that its dead, looking into its eyes doesn’t do anything does it?” She barked.
“Y-yeah… right..” Leo said, scratching his head. “I’m going to take a quick look around while you’re busy with that.” He said, as Thea merely nodded in response.

Leo began to pace around the perimeter of the scene, Checking for anything that seemed out of place, listening for any sounds that didn’t belong, or any sights that didn’t look right. If there had been one of this awful creatures, it was completely possible they may have been more. Then there was always the chance that some other long extinct beast of legend could show up looking for blood. Leo really wasn’t in the mood to start dealing with the paranoia and fear that came with that, So he put his mind to the task at hand.

The forest looked as calm and peaceful as ever, As if left undisturbed for thousands of years. There was barely a single thing out of place besides all the havoc they had caused fending off the cockatrice. Leo began to wonder if the creature would be worth anything, Or had any special properties to its body that some estranged vendor might pay a large price for. He didn’t even know where to begin, But Leo figured he would be entitled to something from a beast so ancient. Hell, It might end up making him so rich he could quit the farm life for good. It’s not like the army was paying him well for his service to the king. The real payment was in his family getting to live, as far as they were concerned.

Leo headed on back to Thea and the corpse, and saw her propped up against a tree perusing over her notes and occasionally glancing over at the body.

>So, Should we take its head as a trophy or something?
>Think that thing is worth anything?
>So, what’s next?
>Write in

Just an update on mechanics going forward, I’ll end up making a pastebin at some point for it, but: You can write in any assortment of things for Leo to say, or ask, even if conversation isn’t the main focus of the available choices for that update, and it will be added into the next scene. This way fluff can naturally occur and develop as the quest moves forward.

Leo shuffled on up to Thea and asked.
“So, would you have any use for the body?”

“You know, as much as I would love to take this entire thing back to the encampment, It’s just not possible at this point. But what we can do, is pluck the feathers, make a nice and hearty meal before taking the head along with us. The lizard like eyes and rooster shaped head will be enough evidence to prove our encounter.” Thea explained.

She was right. It certainly wasn’t something that could be mistaken for anything else. He pondered as to how much value there would be in a creature thought to have been extinct. The information that some still exist would even be pretty valuable, Let alone parts from the creature. So with a nod, Leo walked over to the beast and got to work removing its feathers, and its head. Thea tucked away her notes into her packs, and started to help Leo with the process.

Now Leo was starting to wonder just what a mythical creature would taste like. It would probably be something simple and disappointing, but he was curious either way. After stripping away all the feathers, and removing the portions of lizard scales, Leo packed up what meat he could and wrapped the head in cloth, before tying it off and hooking the head neatly to his waist.

“I wonder what this all means.. You have any Ideas Thea?” Leo asked.
Thea turned her head slightly pondering the question, before giving her thoughts on the matter.
“I would say that this means it’s completely possible that other mythical beasts may be in the area, Or elsewhere in the world. It’s not like a cockatrice is the only mythic creature recorded in history. Dragons, Hydra’s, all variety and form of giant beast or insect.. but it’s still incredibly strange that we’re the first to run into something like this.”

“I don’t think that we’re just lucky either. Something must have changed that we don’t quite understand yet. Maybe these things have been in hiding somewhere, and are just no re-emerging, but even that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense… I suppose we won’t really know until we run into more of them.” Leo replied.
Thea nodded in agreement as she brought her hand to her chin, silently thinking over the situation.

>”Okay, we should get moving. Let’s not waste anymore daylight.”
> “Anything else we should take off the creature?”

After looking everything over to make sure they had all they needed, Leo spoke.
“Alright, We should get moving before we waste anymore daylight.. Think we will make it there today?”

Thea pulled out the map from her pouch and began to look around the area and up into the sky. After a few minutes she responded.
“Yeah, we should be able to reach the rally point pretty soon.”

While it would be a relief to get out of these woods, the thought of where the army might thrust them next didn’t bring any satisfaction to Leo’s mind. Would they be sent back to the elven capital to face the demons in open field? And what ever became of the reinforcements from the west that never made it to the conflict? So many questions that would have to remain unanswered until they made it too their destination. The good thing was that Leo’s advancement into the royal regiment was almost guaranteed, seeing as how he had slain a mythical creature with his own hands, and is going to receive a recommendation from someone as esteemed as Thea.

The duo marched on for hours before finally exiting the thick of the woods, and into open fields. Simple grass and hills was so much easier to traverse than the tangled mess of branches and shrubbery they had been trudging through this whole time, Though they still had a ways to go, it was good to finally be free of that prison they call a forest. Although he knew it wouldn’t be long before they had to go marching back in, It was a breath of fresh air for them both, as they bathed in the sunlight and continued onwards.

Navigating the open terrain was much easier on Thea, and a lot less time was spent pausing to take everything it. Before too long, the duo came upon a series of tents, with a group of roughly 10 to 15 royal knights patrolling the area. In the center, a large tent with the banner of the kingdom flowing gently in the breeze.
“We’re finally here… Looks like the army has moved on already Leo. Let’s see what’s going on.” Thea said, as she led him into the large tent centered at the encampment.

Before they had entered the tent they could hear a man shouting and ranting about something.

”Look, I’m telling you the gods honest truth! I just came from there, what more do you need?! I have half a mind to go to the general with this for obstru-“
The man was cut off as we had entered the tent and were greated by the correspondent there.

“Name and rank.” The man sternly bellowed, speaking over the man nearly a foot away from him, arms crossed.
“Thea Ysmay, Commander, first battalion” she said.

The correspondent began to shuffle through papers and pulled out a small picture, before quickly glancing it over and looking at Thea.

Thea approached the desk of the correspondent making her request,
“What is the current assignment for the first battalion?”

The man of shoulder long hair, shuffled through some more papers before answering. His desk was quite the mess and riddled with open documents and folders scattered all about.
“First battalion is being held in reserve until we can verify the status of third battalion. “
“You mean the unit heading eastward that was supposed to regroup with us for the assault on the capital?” Thea said.

“That’s right. Due to the heavy losses from the unidentified threat at the capital, The first staying off the front lines until they get reinforced for another attack on the capital, as per General Richards orders.” He replied, as the other fellow with long black hair standing a few feet away burst out saying.

“IM TELLING YOU, I was a part of third battalion! The chain of command was severed when those things ambushed us. There’s nobody left!!”

The man behind the desk sighed heavily before speaking in an irritated tone, “And I told you, I can’t send that report out unless its information is verified by an officer. We can’t just go spreading misinformation on the whims of every soldier who barges in here.”

Thea quickly interjected, “I could verify that information for you.” A look of surprise broke out on the long haired man as the desk jockey continued. “Your orders are to regroup with the First and await further instructions, we can’t have you..”
He was cut off with the sound of a large thud, Thea had pulled the Cockatrice head from Leo’s bags, and slammed it down on the desk before him.
“The situation is dire, and this man isn’t making wild claims. We personally encountered a mythical beast on our way back from the front lines. The threat isn’t unidentified. Ancient evils have overrun the capital and laid waste to our armies.”

He sat in awe of the head sitting out before him. He had little response to her claims after seeing the thing for himself.
“Well… I’ll file a report. If you head northwest and report back on the situation and it is as he has claimed, then we can put a rush on getting the ranks replenished.” He muttered, still gazing at the decapitated beast in front of him.
Thea picked the head back up tucking it away in Leo’s bags while saying. “Good..” leaving her notes on his desk, She then quickly turned a head to the man with long black hair before snapping “You there, What’s your name.”

With a salute the knight proclaimed, “Duncan Fisher ma’am.”
“Very well Duncan, You’re with us. Let’s get going” As the trio now head out of the tent, and made their way back to the elven forests.

Leo followed Thea out of the tent with Duncan not far behind, and asked.
“What’s the plan here Thea?”

“It’s time to see how widespread this problem is.. Duncan, what can you tell us?” she asked.

”Well, I’ll tell you what I told the other guy. We were attacking the last village on the way to the capital. It was a rather small town, Nothin' much too it. But the next thing we knew, the sky had gone black and red, and these real nasty fuckers came out of nowhere and started tearin' into us. The things were like nothin’ I’ve ever seen before. Big chains and metal stickin' out of their bodies, Shit.. Some of the elves even turned into these sick things.” Duncan frantically explained, as he shook his head back and forth for a moment before continuing.
”Needless to say we got our asses kicked, And as we’re trying to make our way back to the rally point to give everyone a heads up, A horde of all sorts'a freaks start to finish the job.”

“Freaks?” Leo said.

”Yeah… Giant Catoblepas I think they called ‘em. I don’t even know.. I never seen a thing so big move so fast. We just ran as quick as our legs could take us… One of the things managed to scoop me up, but by the time I got away everyone else was already gone. I had hoped someone else would have made it back, But I was the first one to get here.. According to him anyways. He gestured back towards the tent the group was moving away from.
”which reminds me lady… What the hell are we going back for?”

“Because I need to make sure, and because they won’t believe a word you say otherwise.. I know it doesn’t seem right, But they can’t just take everyone’s word for it, that would be insane. More importantly, If this is what we think it is Leo, then we need to take this information to the general. He has to know how these things are entering our world, and how we can stop it. We won’t win getting into a war of attrition with these things.
Duncan, you know the safest way there, right?” Thea calmly replied.

”Well, I certainly know which way we AIN’T goin’.”

“So that’s been two battalions that have been virtually wiped out, shouldn’t we form a larger unit before heading out?” Leo asked.

“Well, we could go and gather some soldiers to accompany us, But should we really?” Thea asked. “It could help us just as much as it could hinder us. We aren’t marching out to get into a battle with these things, just scout out the situation. See what’s going on.”

”Getting’ into a fight would just be suicide. That is defiantly somethin’ we need to avoid at all costs.” Duncan remarked.

That was certainly true. The number of bodies that were littered throughout the great tree was a estimate to just how strong this enemy was. Mortal men and women being crushed like insects.. Maybe it would still be worth getting a few extra hands, but it would be something Leo would have to seriously consider.

”well, what about horses?” Leo asked.
”Wouldn’t that end up posing the same problem?” Duncan replied, Thea quickly speaking up after him.
“No no, we could tie them up well before we even get close to the settlement. We shouldn’t have to worry about that. It would be a good idea for us to get some horses.”
The trio began to make their way across the encampment to the small stables on the eastern side. Thea went and had A quick word with the correspondent, who approved their requisition, and then found themselves 3 sturdy mounts to take on their journey. The additional mobility would serve them greatly in the mission ahead, if they remained concealed from the enemy.

“Not too shabby, Almost as good as my last horse…” Duncan remarked. The horses reminded Leo of the conscripted. The poor things had little to no idea what they were getting into, had little choice in the matter, and most likely would end up dead by the end of the day, just tools of the military.

“Okay, are we ready to head out?” Thea asked.

“ Looks good, ready when you are.” Leo said, mounting his horse.
“Alright! Duncan, lead on. We’ll be right behind you. Thea shouted, as the group began to ride across the open fields headed into the elven forest once more.
How many times would he find himself coming back to these dreaded woods? How many more times would he be charging straight into an overwhelming enemy? He wasn’t exactly confident in their odds. While it was true that Leo and thea managed to make their way out of the great tree and elven capital, the distraction of the ongoing battle is what gave them the openings they needed to slip away from the fight, but Leo had no idea how capable these demons were at tracking people down.

For all they knew, they had a nose as sensitive as a hounds, and they would be spotted the moment they arrived on the scene. The entire ordeal was a big risk, but every single day that went by with these portals open was another day that more and more foes poured out of their gates. It was important to kick things into high gear, and remobilize the army to the singular goal of shutting the portals. Leo believe Thea knew that, and that’s why she volunteered to take the mission immediately. The group had opted to go it alone, in the hopes that it would make staying hidden that much easier. It was apparent to everyone here that a head on battle would be the end of them. Nobody here was under any delusions of what awaited them in the elf town.

The horses entered the woods, and following tightly behind Duncan, the group bobbed and weaved through the forest, avoiding the pathways and trails that Duncan and the third battalion had taken. There wasn’t a beast in sight and it seemed that letting Duncan lead the way was the right call, because before too long he came to a stop and said,
“The town is only a short ways away now, we best tie our horses here.”

The group then traveled by foot, before reaching the outskirts of the town. Oddly enough, there wasn’t a single body in sight. Nor was there any demons out in plain view. The settlement looked completely deserted.
”Think its possible that the enemy already made their way to the capital?
Thea merely sat observing the settlement for any signs of movement while Duncan’s eyes darted from side to side.
“What happened to all of the corpses? Those things had painted the town red with our blood, but now it’s all so pristine and neat. It’s only been two days..
The sun was starting to set in the sky.

HOLY FUCK.. just realised what this whole story was a tad familiar..

ITS FUCKING OBLIVION MATIES
WE NEED A HERO OF KVATCH
>>
Also i reminder to bee..
We don't have the nice armour like thea.
We have shit on top of our chainmail
>>
>>161629
Because the art isnt colored, its hard to tell. The designs on duncan and thea are the same, whereas leos is different. It would be leather colored. But to your point, it should look like hes wearing cheap raggity shit, but we just decided to remain consistent than change him up all at once.
But its okay.
full plate soon
>>161623
I guess? The portal thing shares a similarity, but i dont remeber any race being on the brink of extinction in oblivion.

Maybe ill take a crack at an elder scrolls quest in the future.

>Maybe ill take a crack at an elder scrolls quest in the future.
You're already pretty much running a copy of one with self-inserted protagonists. No point.
>>
>>161654
That would be epic..
>>
>>161658
Hey its different you slut
We didn't start off in prison
>>
>>161686
inb4 Leo finds a silent man in a prison who, while a tad ugly, is stronger than he will ever be only after a few hours.
>>
>>161707
inb4 said man becomes champion of the kingdom and a master of thieves, Hero of a Town, Closer of the gates, Master of assassins, Head of fighters guild after 2 days
>>
The trio began to sneak their way around the perimeter of the town. Carefully observing the scene for any signs of movement, but they saw nothing. The entire town had looked abandon. There were a multitude of scattered houses around the area with broken windows, shut doors, and other signs of damage from a recent battle. But there was no blood, or corpses from either side out in the open. In the middle of the town was a building larger than most others. It was adorn with images of the Great tree, and other symbols that Leo couldn’t recognize.

”I really, REALLY, don’t like the looks of this. Ain’t this enough? The battalion clearly isn’t here, they were wiped out just as I had described, So let’s head back already.”

”I really wish I could just leave it at that Duncan.” Thea replied. “but there’s a lot of questions that we can answer if we just go a little further.”

What are you talking about? I thought we were here to see confirm the army was destroyed so you could report back. Duncan was quite perplexed as to what she had meant, but Leo had an idea as to what she meant.

It’s the bodies isn’t it?
Thea nodded at Leo’s assumption.
”The bodies that are missing, the blood that should be strewn all across these fields of grass. This battle couldn’t have taken place all of what… 2 days ago tops? It’s just like that floor back in the great tree. We had found a room clean as can be, except for a mound of skeletons wrapped in armor. Leo explained.

”Exactly. There might still be a chance to find out just what had happened to our fallen comrades to leave them in such a defiled state.. At the very least, we need to find their corpses.”

It was then that Theo had an idea. It was a longshot, but the smell was starting to bother him anyways. Leo removed the cockatrice’s severed head from his bag, and threw it as far as he possibly could at the edge of the town.
Thea and Duncan both stood baffled, and gave a quick exchange of confused looks between each other as Leo stared aimlessly out towards the town. But it wasn’t soon after that they saw movement. The settlement had suddenly sprang to live as hulking beasts of twisted flesh and metal began to lumber out of the houses and wander in the direction of the decapitated head. They had been lying in wait, looking to ambush the party, or any unwary traveler that wandered into the town.
”Haha! Well done Leo!”
A look of determination had appeared on Thea’s face, as she brought her staff to the ready, looking to move into the town.

>Get as much distance as possible from the creatures before entering the town.

>attempt to sneak your way into the large building fixed at the center of town as a group.

>Split up, using someone as bait to lure the creatures further out.

As the monsters slowly lumbered on over to the head resting out on the open field, Leo quickly lit a small fire, and put a large amount of greenery over top, causing vast amounts of smoke to erupt from the flame, attracting the attention of the enemy as they began to wander in the direction of the smoke. It was then the group began to sneak their way into the heart of the settlement. They had to weave their way in and out of buildings, shrubs and trees to avoid running head first into the flesh creatures, but their distraction was working well. After making it a quarter way into the city, the enemy was almost entirely behind them, so they could relax and continue onwards at a modest pace.

”Where the hell could they have gone stuffed the corpses?! It ain’t xactly easy to hide the bodies of an entire human battalion. Duncan whispered, only to be met with shrugs from Leo and Thea in unison.

“I’ll assume that’s why we are checking the big building first. It would honestly be hard to believe that they could have completely disposed of that many people, blood, bones, armor, weapons, horses and all with two days’ time.

” I’m less concerned with where they did the deed, and more with what deed has been done.” Thea added, as they soon found themselves approaching the large structure. There was a pretty large clearing before you could reach the walls of the building, and that’s when they saw him.

Standing firm right outside the front doors blocking their only way into the complex was a creature not unlike one they had encountered back in the elven capital. There was a distinct difference in this one however.
It looked far more deadly
Its right arm was replaced with a cleaver like appendage, and wore a skull in the middle of its loincloth. The figure had a mostly human body, with the exception of being 8 feet tall. But on the bright side, this thing was the only threat in plain view.
This beast was clearly different from the other assortments of mutated freaks, skulking about mindlessly towards any stimuli they could find. The creature stood alert, Ready, scanning over the area for any intruders it could find.

>Try to sneak around the creature.

>Prepare yourselves, and attack the monster together.

>Have someone distract the creature while the others get inside.

>write in.

”Lets hit him while we have the advantage.” Leo whispered, and with a quick exchange of looks, the party was in agreement. They slowly approached as a group from the monsters side, With his back against the door there wasn’t any way to get directly behind him, but it looked like the fiend hadn’t noticed their approach yet.

Unfortunately, either through bad timing or luck, the creature caught a glimpse of them as they were just outside swords reach. Leo and Duncan quickly charged forward upon being discovered and managed to inflict a couple minor wounds on the creature, nearly cleaving apart it’s head as it leapt backwards at a surprising speed.

The strange thing gurgled and made weird slithering sounds that were quite loud as it raised its arm ready to attack. Duncan lunged forward again, Spear in hand, but the monster easily parried his blow and went in to trade strikes of his own. As Duncan began to jump back avoiding strike after strike, Leo darted forward to relieve some of the pressure from its offensive. As Leo’s sword made contact with the monsters blade of an arm, He was quickly overwhelmed by its strength and pushed away with enough force to send him tumbling along the ground.

Giving him no time to recover, the beast rushed down Leo and took another swing as Thea let loose a bolt of lightning, But for the first time, Her attack was deflected by the monsters weapon. It had anticipated the attack and stopped itself in time to avoid the strike, as the lightning bolt whizzed off course and struck the ground with a loud crack.

Leo quickly then scrambled to his feet shielding himself from a blow that sent him recoiling backwards into Thea, knocking her over. The beast again charged straight at you, as you caught a glimpse of Duncan rushing the creature from behind.
