You are Keira, a 25 year old Sandslash, former dockworker, currently a sailor heading for St. Valders. Sadly the ship you were on has been and is still in, a rough storm- causing you a light injury to the stomach. After talking Bluetail into getting out of the storm and hope nothing goes wrong, he leads you to his cabin.
Once the two of you get into his cabin, he sits you down on his cot while he cleans up the rather messy room- which didn't really do much considering the ship was still rocking back and forth quite vigorously but not enough to tip it over or cause incredible damage.
As you look around the room, you wince as your injury slightly acts up. It may be a slight cut to the stomach but the saltwater had soaked the bandages and was seeping in, stinging you- even though you know it's helping you in the long run.
Once Bluetail was done tidying up, well tidying as much as he could, he walked over to with two bottles of whisky, one for him and one for you.
"So... that cut isn't too bad is it?"
"Hurts ba' its nothin' ta' worry about. Feeling sick? You were in tha' rain awfully long."
"Not in the slightest. It helps having a Water-type for a father. Explains why I love the sea really- it may not like me but I love it. The sense of freedom and the great feeling that you're on a grand voyage... sadly most of my journey's have ended with my crew quitting because every single time I go out, a storm tends to hit us."
"Sounds rough."
"What about you?"
"What about me sur'?
"Why are ya' a sailor? Ground-types tend to stay on the ground if I'm not mistaken."

"It was on whim really."
"Really now?" Bluetail opens the whisky bottle he's holding and hands it to you before opening his and taking a swig- before looking back at you, "I think it's rather brave of you to do something like this on a whim. Not everyone is cut out to be a sailor but you have quite the spirit."
"Uhh... thanks sur'." You take a swig of your whisky, which you swallow vigorously- you missed that taste very much so.
“I do want to know something specific about you. Why did Gail tell me you broke a chair?”
That damn Nidorina… you tell her to stay out of your way and she makes your life hard instead. She’s going to get it the next time you see her.

“…Gail decided to threaten me ta’ keep quiet. She told me she was on tha’ run from tha’ law and was leaving tha’ country ta’ escape. You were er’ ticket out.” You took a large swig from the whisky. “She tried ta’ smash a chair onto my head and took it from er’ and showed er’ what I’d do to HER head if she tried anything like that again. Even told er’ that I wouldn’t say anything as long as she followed my orders.”

“That’s… quite a lot to take in… you’re saying Gail is an-“

“Outlaw. Yea, I am.” Bluetail pauses before taking a swig of his whiskey, almost falling of the cot as the ship rocked.
“Figures. I get enough of ‘em to deal with while in town. I always end up hiring one without realizing it. Thankfully, they never think ta’ rob me cause’ they know I’ll dump’em in the sea and be done with it.”

“Ya’ saying that-“

“She gets ta’ stay? Yea. But she doesn’t get to do so without compensation. Outlaws are outlaws for a reason and I think she’s just ya typical robber. Can’t get any money and steals just ta’ feed herself. I’ll just give er’ extra tasks and be done with it’. The less trouble the better.”

“Yeah…”

“Of course, Gail had told me something else.” You look to Bluetail, who was looking at his whiskey. “Said you were an outlaw yourself. Heck, even recognized that bandana of yours- even if it were tied to ya’ arm.”

“Wh-what?! I’m n-“

“I didn’t say you are an outlaw- I said you were an outlaw. Tell me why. Don’t try to smooth talk you’re way out of this either. I know Gail may be lying rat but she definitely wouldn’t lie about somethin’ serious like that.”

That Nidorina is going straight into the water once you get to her. She knew you would talk and backed you into a corner without being here. Of all the times.

“Okay then…” You set down the flask and lie down, might as well get comfortable. “It started when I was only 17.”

“I was young, prideful, and a bit stubborn headed but what Ground type isn’t? I grew up in Bellor Town and was already bored with it. I wanted adventure but I was broke as broke could be. So… I stole.”

You pause and take a swig of whiskey while Bluetail looks at you.

“I stole what I needed to survive. But it grew out of that. I started stealing money, items, berries- all kinds of stuff. One day, I was caught stealing some Pecha berries- kinda why I hate them now, but anyways… I was seen and chased through town, me holding a bag with some Pecha berries in it being chased by a… an assorted group of Guildies.”

“Guildies?”

“Pokemon that work for the Guilds. You know… the Adventurer Guild, the Explorer Guild, the Rescuer’s Guild, and so forth.”

“Oh, them.”

“At the time, I thought they were a rip-off. Do mission’s and crap for them and what do you get!? Ninety percent of the money that you would’ve made goes poof and the leaders pocket is lined even further. The only Mon stupid enough to join are too righteous to see through such an easy veil.”

“Explains why you didn’t just join one.”

“I would’ve just been broke but with a roof over my head and required to get beat up for a living. ‘Sides, I could never make it through their rigorous tests.”

“Do I want to know?”

“No, you don’t.” You two look at each in the darkness, only the wind howling meeting your ears before Bluetail takes a swig of his whiskey.

“Back to the chase, did you get away?”

“I got caught but I was lucky because a big name criminal attacked the town, hoping to free somebody important- a friend, his brother or whatever. The point is that the guildies dropped everything and ran to the bigger threat. I ran until I couldn't find land to run. Ended up on the Mukal Penisula.”

“Wow, you’re pretty lucky no one noticed you running out of town.”

“When a crime boss and is’ lackeys stroll into town to make a big ole’ rescue- it tends to catch everyone’s attention. Sides, only the guildies cared about a thief like me- the regular citizens didn't even know I was a thief.”

“Well… what happened once you got to the Mukal? I'm betting it wasn't as safe as you thought.”

“Yeah... As it turned out, despite getting out of town, I was listed as wanted- not an outlaw yet mind ya’. I had too low a bounty to be classed as an outlaw, around a thousand Lindols. It stunk in my younger selves mind, to see your mug on a wanted poster. Thankfully, they only got a pic. of me with my bandanna on so as long as I didn't wear it in towns, no one knew it was me.”

“Thousand Lindols... that ain't much at all… but I assume you didn't bother turning yourself in?”

“No I uh… I didn't want to go to jail. In the here and now, I know that was stupid thing not to do- it would've been a month in jail. Better than what happened later on.”

“Gang.”
“A… gang?”

“Yeah… name was the Lower Street Wardens. Mainly operated out of Mukal.”

Bluetail looks at you with a face filled with shock, clearly not bemused with your answer.

“Ho- no why, did you join a gang!?”

“I had nowhere ta’ go, nothing ta’ my name and wanted by the law and tha’ guildies. And really… I had little choice in the matter. It was join or sleep for a LONG time. They had me as a regular runner- being messenger girl for the lieutenants in the gang and was part of a job once in a while. Raised my bounty further but after a year… I felt I belonged in a life of crime- it felt right back then.”

“What could be appealing to hiding from the law and know that you could die any day?”

“Dunno. It’s just what felt right to me- as if I were ment for it… or so I thought.” You take a swig of your whiskey, as does Bluetail. Lighting strikes in the background as the rain continues to fall but the wind has started to die off.

“Lemme guess,” He takes a swig of his whiskey only to see that he ran out before throw the bottle onto the floor. “job gone wrong?”

“Yes and no. Job went all right... I was a part of it but had no hand in its failure, it wasn’t my fault it happened the way it did.”

“Calm down! It was only a guess. I’ve dealt with enough criminals to assume that’s what happens- I’ve been right so far and I’m right now aren’t I?”

“Yeah.. yeah…” You rim one of your claws along the lip of the whisky bottle, trying to dig up darker memories.

“What happened ?”

“Job was to rob a warehouse of its goods- some seeds, some berries, some gummis and a little bit of dis’ an’ dat’. Nothin’ too much but nothing grand. Should’ve went down without a hitch but…”

“But what?”

You take a light swig of whiskey before spinning the bottle, your mind focused on thoses memories alone.

“…we were betrayed.”

“By who?”

>A lieutenant- his freedom from jail for info. Almost got us killed.

“A lieutenant- his freedom from jail for info. Almost got us killed. A bunch of guildies and officers were there, waiting to ambush us the moment we stepped out of that warehouse.”

“But you lived, obviously.”

“Not all of us- that lieutenant didn't in the end. After a short battle we had five dead and only me and the rest got arrested. Didn’t matter if I lived or not, to the gang and in my younger selves’ mind- we were dead. Jail for the rest of your life. Nothing else to see, no more freedom and etcetera. Stepping out that door was our downfall…”

“How’d they know you weren’t just a civilian when you stepped out the warehouse, by the way?”

“Remember that bandanna I wear on my arm? On the reverse is a crappy stitching of Lower Street Warden’s logo. Can only see it on one side so I usually wear on the other. She probably saw it when it came lose slightly.” You thank everything though, that Gail did not notice the Emera that was inside, or else Bluetail would be grilling you for stealing.

Bluetail, thinks for a second, looking out of the window- the rain was dying down and sea was getting calmer. It seems the QuickFoot won’t sink today.

“Considering you’re here and not rotting in jail; I take it certain circumstances happened to allow for your freedom?”

“Yeah. I didn’t get life in jail, only five years instead. Apparently, the only thing they could ever prove I did was steal and launder money. Other than that, I was clean.” You take your final swig of whiskey and set the bottle on the floor before continuing.

“So for five years of my life, I sat in a dirty jail cell, forced to do hard labor and eat crappy food. Was enjoyable in its own way.”

“Jail? Enjoyable?”
“Met some mon’ that could help me back into the old life; I mean one before I was a criminal. It’s what I've been doing these past three years really- working at the docks, going to the bar for a couple of drinks then going home and sleeping to restart the process the next day. It was… dull. But I wasn't in jail so I was thankful.”

“That’s quite the story.”

“A little short but it’s pretty much what happened and how I got here. IT’s also why I’m such a brute. Five years of hard labor plus three years of hard labor with pay gives you quite a lotta muscle.”

“Nice to know that you got something positive out of all this. Now one last question… when we get to St. Valders, are you going to quit or continue with me all the way to St. Albaan. Or will get out in Seana?”

“Wh-why do you expect me to quit?!”

“That’s how it always is. My crews always quite after one or two journey’s. I know Gail is jumping off the second we land, dunno about the twins and you… I don’t know what you’re doing really, other than leaving Bellor Town.”

well we originally just came for a ride to St. Valders but didn't really have any plans once we got there so...

Well it's probably going to take Blue here some time to fix his ship, see if he can't restock his crew, and maybe try to find some more jobs to take before he hits the sea again. Guess we could use that time to try and find something in town and if nothing comes up hop on the quickfoot again and try then next town. But yeah unless something happens St. Valders is more then likely our stop.

“Yeah, St. Valsers is my stop. Sorry…”

“It’s fine. I’m used to my crew members coming up to me and say ‘I quit’. Nothing new.”

“I could… at least stick around ta’ help find you some new crewmembers. I assume it’s gonna take time ta’ fix the QuickFoot. I’ll probably be looking for something to do in town. Maybe a new job or something else I guess…?”

“That’s awfully sweet of ya’. Ya’ don’t have ta’ do that for me. But you can if ya’ want.”

“Ya’re welcome sur…. Seems the storm’s died down. Looks like we can sail in peace again.”
“You’re right. I’ve gotta get back ta’ steering and once I’m heading ta’ bed, it’ll be your turn to steer. Shouldn’t be too hard for someone who’s been around sailors for three years. See ya’ soon.” With that, Bluetail gets up and leaves, leaving you alone.

You get off of the cot and walk out the door to the main deck to see the damage down. At least five ropes snapped and one of the two main sails had a rip in it, some of the deck was torn apart and the bannister was mangled but the ship was sailable.

After a couple days more of sailing, you finally reach St. Valders and are ready to disembark.

“Well, we’re here. What’cha gonna do first, First Mate?” Bluetail asks from behind you, as you stare at the city in the distance.

You decide to go out and find Buetail some new sailors-might as well, you promised and anyways, you could find something while looking for sailors.

As you got off the ship, Gail streaked past you, laughing as she bounded off into town. It seems that this may be the last time you see her- or maybe not, who know.

Apparently, the twins decided that they were going to stick with Bluetail, so even if you don’t find a whole lot of sailors, Bluetail has some already.

You decide to check out the nearest bar in hopes of finding some out of work sailors getting drunk of their butts.

When you go in, you notice the atmosphere is quite energetic, with everyone cheering and talking to each other, completely different from the picture you had in mind with a bar full of drunk sailors. Most were drinking although there was a game of fingers being played nearby and being a Ground-type with only two claws, you’d probably win. There was also, in the corner, a game of cards being played although you have no clue what game they’re playing.

You go around asking if they want work and made some headway, pointing out a ship in need of a fresh crew, neglecting to mention its name or the fact that the current crew was a captain and two excitable twins.

As you went around the bar and talked to everyone, you felt like someone was watching you.

You thought you felt someone staring at you but when you looked around, no one was watching. You decided to take a break and sit at the bar and ask the bartender if there's anything exciting to do in town, not involving the guilds of course.

The elderly Raticate bartender noted that one of the trade houses in the port was looking for a couple new hires, particularly for messenger service. He also notes that, while the guilds are obviously something you don't like, why not join the Royal Guard?

You dwell on the thought for a moment while the bartender sets down a shot of brandy saying that it was already paid, but you paid no mind to it.

Messenger for a Trade House? Or a Royal Guard for a kingdom you don't even know the name of, only the port.

You drink the shot of brandy and start to feel a little tired but still awake. You decide to make a decision now before you head to an inn and settle down for the night.

You decide, rather drowsily, that you could be a Royal Guard. As you leave the bar with something resembling a plan in my, your body start to feel heavier and heavier as you get to the nearest inn.

You barely were able to pay for the room before collapsing on the front desk, asleep. The clerk assumed you were just drunk but you had already payed and got one of the workers to carry you to your room before resting on your bed. The brandy you drunk was a lot more than just brandy, having been drugged to make you sleep with some local herbs as well.

The Sneasel quietly walked up to you and before long, was standing beside you on your bed. It stood there for a minute before looking through a bag that was behind its back. It pulled out a small book and a pen- most likely a diary left behind.

It quickly wrote something down before tearing out the page and leaving it on the dresser. Not too long after, it jumped out of the window and disappeared into the night.

---

You wake up early the next morning, a bit dazed but rather refreshed. As you look around the room, confused as how you got to it. Before long you remembered, you conked out just after to rented a room at the inn you're in now! You then spy the note on the dresser along with a diary and a pen.

You pick it up and read it:

Dear Kiree,

You might've forgotten about me- then again, it's been what? Five years or so since we last
saw each other?
Anyways, seeing you in that bar was quite a shock, never thought you would've ever

You decide to eat some breakfast downstairs in the inn’s main dining hall and read the journal. You might as well, you have time to kill as the person who gave you this note did give you a timeframe, just a place to look.

As you look through the journal, you find notes upon notes about the regions on the continent. It seems that whoever left this for you did so to help you figure out this land a bit more considering you’ve never been to this place before.

You take a sampling of the first few pages introducing the continent and the local region.
”The continent of Umaria holds a large number of Pokemon, is highly diverse and very divided. Kingdoms and duchies vie for land and bragging rights in battle as armies fight left and right all over the place. Western Umaria has three kingdoms that clearly should never be messed with:
The Kingdom of St. Albaan, The Kingdom of Faorila, and the Kingdom of Restonia.
They control the western lands of Umaria, with duchies being overtaking by these brutish kingdoms.

Over here in the east however. And it’s all more unified, although less populated. St. Valders is the major southern port town to the Grand Duchy of Miskal. The immediate area is mostly forest with a bit of plains in the mix. Plenty of hostile wilds and a great risk of getting skewered by bandits… but for me, it was a lot of fun exploring this region. I’ve drawn out a basic map and hope to do so for every area I go through- hopefully to publish this one day.” - Jela

Jela… It sounds even more familiar than Jump Shot, whatever kind of name that may be.

"Yup! Most of them went with Bluetail to drop some stuff off and pick up more cargo! "Jay said and he and his sister carried a small crate onto the ship.

You ask what these crates are for and they respond that they're for the crew- consisting mainly of food considering most of it ended up everyone last trip.

You wave goodbye to the twins before setting off to the market, finally about to meet this Jela girl. But you do have something to sell as well...

You finally go to meet Jela at the market.

As you walk into the bustling market, you feel… you feel… you have this feeling like you have to grab something and take it. It seems like jail did nothing for your old habits really.
You ignore the urges and look for Jela only to realize she did not tell you what she looked like or what she was selling- you’re completely lost amongst the massive crowd of Pokémon and market stalls loaded with merchandise.

As you walked past one of the stalls however, a voice calls to you.

“Oy, Kiree. Look over here!”

You turn to see a Sneasel standing behind a both filled with books of all kinds.

“Kiree, been a long time hadn’t it?”

“I.. uh… lemme be honest. I don’ remember ya’.”

“Kiree! You’re too forgetful! I was your cohort during our escapades in Muskal. Nicknamed Jump Shot ‘cause I jumped up to use Ice Beam all the time?”

You dig deep to remember this strange Sneasel before finally remembering her. Jela was your partner in crime and was always there for you. Mostly liked scouting out places than actually robbing them and had a knack for exploration in general. You always wondered why she wasn't a guildy but you never asked and don't intend to now.

“Holy crap. Jela I’m so sorry. It’s been years and-“

“Don’t apologize. I’m sorry I wasn't with you guys at that warehouse… must’ve stunk a lot to get betrayed like that.”

“Yeah it did. What’re doing here?”

“Snuck away from Muskal and wanted to do something… different. Decided to map whole areas and regions. Most maps these days are crap unless they’re for sailors- those are detailed as heck. I decided to make a difference. That journal is what I used to document everything.”

“Brave of you, then again, you loved to explore a lot.”

“Yep! But you didn’t though- imagine my reaction when I saw you in that bar. I had to meet you but I couldn’t just confront you. I uhh… let you sleep before giving a note.”

“You drugged me is what you’re saying?”

“Uhh…”

“No harm no foul. I know you well enough that you wouldn’t stab me in the back.”

“So what are you doing here in St. Valders?”

“Wanted a new life. Decided here was the best place to start.”

“So what will you do now? You could always stay with me if things don’t go right.”
