/qst/ - Quests

You are Ryan Settle, RMDL of the United States Navy, and you are currently serving as the Noble Steed of a bikini-clad woman while a noblewoman cowers behind her desk and begs you for help against the bands of ruffians filling the office lobby. Kongou leans forward, plucking your cane from your hands, and thrusts it forward like a lance.

“CHARGE!” she yodels, kicking her bare heels against your thighs encouragingly.

This wasn't quite the role you'd expected to play - but a Damsel in Distress is a Damsel in Distress, and her call must be answered. You charge through the room, clearing Haruna and Kirishima (who're now wrestling prone as they rip each other's outfits to pieces) with a single adroit leap, making sure to favor your good leg on the landing. Letting Kongou's weight tilt you forward you lunge towards the door of Goto's office. Yamato leaps from behind the desk, knowing she's got to stop you and looking horrified that you're making her. Kongou reaches out with your cane and neatly stabs the tip between the prongs of the small anchor that dangles from Yamato's bare hip, twisting it in the belt-string of her outfit. Yamato squeals, her heels turning outward as her hands fly down instinctively to protect her dignity - which makes it easy for your momentum to throw her off balance. Driving Yamato ahead like a battering ram, you slam into the door, popping the simple latch easily.
>>
Yamato ends up on the floor, of course, curling her legs beneath her as a shield as the unfortunate realities of short skirts manifest themselves. You stumble over her, throwing you forward. Kongou tries to catch you both by planting the cane against the floor, but momentum - and the lack of friction between her smooth skin and your working khakis - send her flying clear over your head like a pole-vaulter. You look up in time to see something strange and wonderful go hurtling out the window behind Goto's desk in a shower of crumbling safety glass.

And then there's only the stunned silence of the lobby behind you. You freeze awkwardly, one hand on the desk's edge where you caught yourself, waiting for the slow, raspy hiss of the door's pneumatic cylinder to finish.

The latch re-engages with a polite little click.

“... WHHHYYYYYY!?!?! Yamato demands.

[ ] Approach the window. You must see that mysterious creature one more time - with the lower body of a JMSDF Admiral and the torso and head of a smoking hot chick. You may never again gaze upon the majesty of a fully-operational Desstaur.

[ ] Help Yamato up first. You do owe her an apology, and you don't want to be too close to Goto for at least thirty to sixty seconds, considering how you aided and abetted the latest Burning Love.

[ ] See if you can't help Goto escape. Knowing Kongou she'll have him pinned on the lawn, in view of God and everybody, and considering her attire it's not something he needs right now.

Supertankers and the like, but yeah it doesn't go that much bigger. Seawise Giant / Janre Viking is "only" twice as long and twice as wide as Yams.

Main worry would really be the younger, smaller crabs; the ones that go for smaller hulls and/or the sunken shipgirls themselves.

Not to mention the weight of the fuel too. A full gas tank for a cruise ship is somewhere in the region of a million gallons. Or roughly two olympic sized swimming pools. Each gallon of fuel weighs about 8 pounds. On top of that the ship will also have ballast tanks full of water specifically designed to help keep the ship stable. So it's a LOT of weight and helps lower the centre of gravity to a sane level for such a big ship.

That of course assumes you don't hit a rock and breach half of the ship, re: Costa Concordia.

Stooping, you slip your arm underneath Yamato. She yelps in surprise as you sling her upright one-armed, planting her ample buttocks against the desk for support. Her hands stay buried between her legs, keeping her meager skirt locked tight around her unmentionables. “WHW-A--WHA-WH YYYYYYYYY!?” she demands again.

“Every normal man,” you say primly, “Must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats.”

Yamato recoils from you, eyes wide in horror.

“H.L. Mencken said that,” you clarify.

“Wh-what kind of r-ruthless monster could s-s-say such a -”

“Newspaper editor.”

“Oh,” Yamato says immediately. “I... yes.”

From outside you hear a deep, gasping wheeze. Hair on your nape stands on end as the pressure drops precipitously in the room, the cold, chilly dread sweeping over your skin. You recognize the signs; like the sea rushing out of harbor scant minutes before a tsunami strikes full-force. Somewhere deep within you, a young butterbar trembles. You slap your palms over Yamato's ears.

“Wh-” she begins, but the rest of her query is drowned out by a horrific torrent of profanity from outside the window. It starts in Japanese, shifts to English and ends in pure, sputtering rage, the guttural snarls that presage messy, Nature-Channel velocity murder. Shifting to peer over Yamato's shoulder, you see Kongou straddling Goto's chest, pinning his wrists to the grassy lawn and waiting out her Teitoku's apocalyptic rage with closed eyes and saintly demeanor. At last, he runs out of breath and lets his head flop back on the lawn. He's just drawing another when Kongou leans over him, her long brown tresses slipping off her shoulder to shade their faces from the hot summer sun.

You release Yamato's ears, and she scrambles away from you, blushing a bright red. By rights you ought to go to Goto's rescue... but Kongou's bare, arched back and long chestnut hair is enticingly beautiful in the bright sunlight. You can't help but let Kongou have her moment - and for that matter, Goto. You wonder what's going on behind those long brunette bangs - is his expression softening? Is she looking deep into his eyes, hoping he'll be swayed by the devotion and desperate, pent-up longing so evident in her unguarded moments? You hold your breath -

- and almost spit it out as Goto's hips surge off the lawn, hurling Kongou's ass airborne. The man seems to flex in the middle like spring-steel under tension, sending the Desstroyer ass-over-teakettle in her second front-flip of the day. She lands flat on her stern, blinking in surprise as Goto seems to whip himself off the ground like a dust-devil kicking up a fine spray of Angry Japanese Man. He beams an expression of pure hate down at her - but instead of wilting, she just clasps her small hands together above her ample bosom and gives him the sweetest, most pleading look imaginable.

“Teitoku,” she says. “Please.”

Goto seems to swell like a water balloon shoved against the tap, the whites of his eyes racing away from the pupils as he expands with rage.

Seeing what's coming, she hauls in her own deep breath and attacks prematurely - and good God, her blowers can make a mighty fine draft. “TEITOKOU, I WHAAAARRRGARBL!” She sputters and retches in surprise, thrashing about as she finds herself drenched in water.

You glance askance at Yamato, who's just lowering a truly massive Super Soaker. She blows imaginary smoke away from the muzzle and winks at you.

“Waaah hawwww hawwww~” she sing-songs, then giggles.

Goto draws himself up to his full dignity and rolls across the lawn like a thunderhead, heading for the window. He thunders through the window to loom over the room, his eyes as cold and hard as hailstones.

“G-GOTO-SAMA!”

Goto climbs a few inches higher as he stiffens, poised to fall like a thunderbolt. He rotates in place, sharp eyes slicing across the room till they're staring out the empty window.

Kongou's standing outside - the vision of beauty. Sunlight plays on her thick, wavy chestnut locks, kisses her flawless skin and sparkle in the water droplets trickling into the cleft of her bosom, which is straining against the dark, wet fabric of her black bikini top. You can't help but let your eyes wander down her long, toned legs to her small, bare feet, fidgeting nervously in the grass.

Goto stares at her pleading, longing face as she implores him with her brilliant, beautiful eyes. She forgets to breathe as he takes a step towards the window, his arms reaching out -

- and yanking the blinds shut with a sharp jerk.

Then he swivels, steps to, and drops into his office chair, the pneumatic cylinder hissing as he impacts.

Then he just steeples his fingers and taps them together slowly, glaring at you.

Okay, bro, there's two kinds of PMCs.

The first kind go innabush in Darkest Africa and fuck up bad people. With aircraft and armored vehicles and everything you can fucking imagine.

Blackwater et al are security. That's it. They're fucking security guards. They hire actual ex-military men - with a strong preference for special forces - and they're tasked with defending civilian people doing civilian shit (like rebuilding sandystan's infrastructure or something.) They have small arms, and shit. And at the most, armored SUVs to drive around in without getting their asses shot off.

All these motherfuckers hyperventilating over them - I honestly don't understand it.

Apparently over the years various things have happened, Catholicism has been around for at least 1960 or so years and that means that they've seen a lot of different interruptions. The only times mass is permitted to pause is in the event of a medical emergency, either so the priest can administer last rites or if they're the one with the medical emergency another priest can take over.

I recall in my own church a man started ranting and raving, the priests isn't even flinch and continued giving the mass even as two burly men came and dragged the guy away.

My family has a minor history with the military, my Great uncle on my father's side of the family was one of the poor bastards who had the misfortune of being among the first waves to land on Omaha beach, from what my father told me, my great uncle never married nor talked about the war, understandable given it was goddamn Omaha beach and its killing ground we're talking about here.

Another thing is that ex-armed forces often end up going back just for the money, because the military is shit at teaching them financial responsibility (or they're shit at learning it) and they don't actually know anything else.

Honor's overrated and doesn't do shit the concept of being a decent person doesn't already do. It's just people blowing smoke up their asses.

So I recently read this fanfiction that posits something kinda interesting. Basically it's the ship resurrected as normal humans and the shipgirl part comes a bit later, and that Iku ended up a nun in a monastery. The story is essentially the nun part of her psyche battling with the lewdmarine part.

You sink slowly into one of the guest chairs, feeling for any land mines or trip wires with your ass before trusting it with your weight. If Goto's glare grows much hotter, you'll be leaving with a new tan.

“So.”

“So,” Goto replies, his tone so hard you hear it clank against the wall.

“Looks like you've got something on your mind,” you observe.

“Yeah,” Goto growls. “Life is just full of tough choices, you know?”

“Choices?”

“Bone saw, or circular? Tanto, or cleaver? Salt, or acid?”

You recline in your chair, making it creak companionably. “I'm not sorry,” you intone.

“You should know better than anyone-

“I know that I hurt Arizona by pushing her away,” you say quietly. Yamato squeaks in the corner. “And you know damn well that Kongou's serious about you, even if she buries it under a lot of dess.”

Goto pauses, his face inscrutable.
“And,” you return, “as long as I'm the designated fucking Sisyphus around here, commanding all your battles, I'm gonna take the opportunity to roll some shit back uphill.” You parry Goto's glare with a big, shit-eating smile.

Goto's expression just darkens further. “Settle, I am starting to get the distinct impression that you have not, in fact, spent the last few days shitting the SecNav's shoe-leather.”

You sigh. “That, I could've dealt with.”

“Oh, do tell,” Goto says flatly. “What did he say?”

“I've... they...” you knew this was coming, sooner or later. “They ordered me to... make Arizona happy.”

Yamato squeaks, her pitch rising so high it nearly becomes inaudible. “Not like that, dammit. Necessarily. They, I mean-” Yamato is blushing, and you know Goto's giving you a wicked grin, so you focus on the shipgirl. “I can't blow her off anymore, is what he means- dammit, Yamato, don't do that!” She's actually swooning, hands clapped over pink-flushed cheeks as she giggles.

“Wow,” Goto says, the anger in his voice sending a chill through your blood. “You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you? How fucking awful.”

You feel the blood draining from your face. “... Admiral?”

“They're trying to sack me, Settle.”

You open your mouth, but you can't find any words.

“The right-wingers are having a fucking field day in the Diet,” Goto growls. “That internet stream, with Kongou. Japan isn't as liberated as America is, Settle, and even though they ought to know better a lot of politicians still just don't give a fuck about the opinions of anyone under thirty. Or otaku of any stripe. Especially combined.”

“You've got a record,” you sputter, still stunned. “Wins. Victories. We're talking fucking lives here, Goto - without the trade over the Sea of Japan people will sta-”

“It goes deeper than that!” Goto snarls, slamming his fist onto the desk so hard his keyboard jumps. “They're suggesting that the shipgirls are loyal to me, not Japan.

Yamato covers her mouth with both hands. You remember Shoukaku's small, smooth shoulder in the moonlight as she pulled her robe aside to show you the chrysanthemum, marking her as the Emperor's property - before she asked if you would die to protect her. You remember the dream the monsters sent you; your own hand ruthlessly crossing off the names of the bright, eager-to-please young girls who came to you, eyes glowing with adoration as they sought your approval.

“They're saying it's dangerous,” Goto says quietly, his tone razor-thin. “For one man to command that kind of power.”

“That - but-”

“Oh, they're very good, Settle,” Goto hisses. “They've got the peacenicks in a fucking frenzy. But I've got an easy way out. Can't you see it?”

“The girls,” you say. “Get them to-”

“Who's going to listen to them, Settle?” Goto hisses. “They're not human, after all.”

“But-”

“They're telling the moderates that could bring back the Bad Times,” Goto says quietly. “A military coup, like the one that led us to ruin the last time. But that's the kind of thing those fuckers want,” he spits. “I go over to their side, and they'll quiet down. As long as I stay on their side, see?”

There's a sniffling sound, and then Yamato starts to cry. For such a statuesque woman, she looks surprisingly small now, rubbing at her eyes with balled fists as she weeps miserably.

“It's my fault,” Yamato seems to blubber. “T-t-tto g-g-et me into a-a-ction, you... someone's r-retaliating against you-”

They're actively sabotaging the flag admiral of their shipgirl fleet, who has the respect and admiration of said girls, who has an excellent working relationship with the allies that keeping their fucking lights on and bellies full, while thinking that they're untouchable.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if some CIA direct action types were filtering out of the embassy in case of the worst case.

The thing is, right now we have two basic options.

Option one is to softly, polietly deal with this mess. In the meamtime, god only knows what happens while we scramble to fix shit, amd the possibility of Shipgirl Shenanigans and the Abyssals making and end run goes up exponentially.

Option two is we see the Nationalist Bullshit, they double down, amd we reveal we're the dealer at this game of blackjack and they meed to go the fuck home, or we will roll out the Abyssal Naka Mind Control.

Also, thank you >>183682 for being smart.

One of the core problems is that this level of batshit political stupidity/nationalist insanity can only be swiftly resolved by the Emperor. And bringing him up in a fictional context pisses the wingnuts off even more than mentioning the Rape of Nankin. Bringing him up in quest will make this current mess look tame.

The ironic thing is that this "spiritual realm" craziness is more or less exactly what the Emperor is supposed to deal with.

That reminds me, who's the current PM of Japan in Quest right now? Might still be Abe since KCQ takes place only a couple of years into the future, and I could maybe see Abe lasting long enough to continue serving as PM if his economic policies don't fall apart in the interim or the voters throw him out because of his Article 9 shenanigans during the next election between now and when KCQ happens.

He's been the longest serving PM since Koizumi in 2001-6, having been PM since December 2012, so he's at least got some longevity going for him. All the PMs since Koizumi with the exception of Abe's current term were in office for an average of just around a year, including Abe's first go around as PM in September '06-07.

Abe plays to the right wing nationalist base a lot, as that's pretty much his party's constituency, though he still values Japan's relationship with the US in order to keep China in check. Frequent trips to Yasukuni Shrine when he was just a Diet Member and Minister (and probably as PM as well, given what's happening in Quest these past couple of months) sure will endear you to that base.

He's also pissed off the left-wing with his Article 9 reinterpretation thing, allowing the JSDF to go abroad to help assist an ally who was attacked, whereas previously they could only be used in defense or support roles.

So depending if he is PM or not, this could either play very well for us, or very poorly, since he's rather in with the right-wing nationalists and the left-wingers hate him.

“No, Yamato,” you interject. “No. This isn't coming from the top down.”

“No,” Goto growls. “It is not.”

“The Sumiyoshi family?”

“Or the Sumiyoshi-kai,” he returns - the combined federation of smaller Yakuza groups the Sumiyoshi's were - once - the cornerstone of. “The Sumiyoshi family still has a lot of pull, but it's hard to believe that they could get this many politicians on their side so easy. The military keeps detailed intelligence files on these groups for the obvious reasons - files we don't even share with you.

A pause.

“I can't believe I just told you that,” Goto says flatly.

“So you want to consummate it on the floor, or on your desk?” you grunt. “Hey, Yamato, loan him your lipstick.”

Yamato blinks, so confused that she stops crying. “What.”

Goto's too depressed to crack a smile. He just sinks into his chair, looking tired, worn and small.

“That's it,” you say quietly. “I'll make some phone calls, ring up my Holy Nation. I told that sonofabitch Taro if he stuck his finger into this spat that I'd cut it off. Time to follow through-”

“You can't, Settle,” Goto says quietly.

“Watch m-”

“NO!” he almost roars, his entire body snapping taut again. “Don't you fucking get it, you thick-headed yank? They're expecting that. Especially after the threat you made. They'll be waiting with more cameras than a fucking Canon delivery truck. You either use kanmusu for the operation, or US military, or JSDF. Anyone in a black backlava with a submachine-gun will be assumed to be one of the three, Settle, because the Chinese and the Russians certainly have their fucking hands full with the Abyssals! And they just called us out, by coming after me. Everyone who's anyone fucking knows that. Any way you dice it, we'd just be proving the Nationalists point!” He sighs. “Besides, you told Taro not to interfere directly - or that's how any Yak would've taken it, anyways. Nothing says they can't work back channels like this. You go after him now, that's a breach of honor. They'll use that against you so much - it'd be over for you, Settle. Your name would be dogshit across Japan. People still care about that sort of thing. At least plenty of people with pull do.”

“And sorting out the family itself might stop the direct interference, but-”

“We'll still have this problem,” he says with a sigh.

“Fuck, Goto, let me call my Holy Nation. The USN's got a goddamn press corps and a psy-ops division. We can play this game really good.”

Goto shakes his head. “Yeah, just what I fucking need, for the Foreign Devils occupying our biggest military base to come riding to my rescue. They'll have a fucking field day with that, too.”

Bullshit,” you snap. “Haven't the moderates been promoting our presence as a good reason to move money from military applications to domestic programs? They like the USN well enough. Christ knows we got enough good vibrations after that tsunami back in-”

“That was before the abyssals showed up and made the doves look lower than duck shit, Settle,” Goto snaps. You almost start at the vehemence edging his foul language - sometimes you forget he was a sailor, too. “Doesn't change how they feel, sure, but in the end we're just parrying the blow by pacifying the moderates. The Yaks and their buddies in the Diet can keep this up all day long, always another scandal. Sooner or later I'll be too much trouble for the moderates to defend, a liability, and they'll cut me loose.”

You feel the blood pounding against your temples as sheer, hot anger surges through your veins. The old helplessness is back, the sailor without a ship, the Marine without a mission - impotent in every way that counts. “Lure them out, then. Piss on the Sumiyoshi's faces, make them reckless, make them mad and when they come after us again, make them into examples.

“And watch that fucker Taro just throw them under the bus like he tried to do with you?” Goto points out. “We're just soldiers, Settle. Neither of us were trained to think like fucking backstabbing assholes.”

You fix him with a knowing glare. “You made flag rank without a lucky battle, Goto. Don't tell me you don't know how to deal with backstabbing assholes.”

He sighs and shrugs, conceding the point. “Yeah, yeah. When I get a brainwave, I'll let you know.” He rests his elbows on the desk, rubbing the bridge of his nose as he closes his eyes. “Well, what the hell did you come kicking in my door for, anyway?”

“All our ships are alive.”

“Oh, well, that's something,” Goto says, “Hey, could you put that in a memo for me and title it SHIT I ALREADY-”

“The steel-and-aluminum ones at the docks right now,” you continue. “The freighters, the tankers, the civilian hacks, the fucking rowboats for all I know. They're alive.

“Says fucking who?”

You pull out your smartphone, tap the bookmark on the home screen and slide it over Goto's desk as the recording starts to play. Goto cocks his head as the little speaker reproduces the feminine voice sweetly humming “anchors aweigh.”

“That's very nice, but-”

“USS Tortuga,” you say. “The LPD that just brought back a load of wounded from Iwo. Chief Parker recorded that with a fucking handheld boom mic yesterday afternoon, or so he said. Want to hear a few more?”

Goto visibly pales. “But... wouldn't... wouldn't they have-”

You both turn to stare at Yamato at the same time. She shrinks towards the corner, blushing furiously. “W-w-w-whaaat!?”

“You....”

“Knew?”

She stares at you both in horror. “What are you talking about!? They don't sing!

“So you heard them humming?” you press.

“NO!” Yamato says, blushing furiously. “I - we - no! None of us have ever seen anything like that! Not that I've heard! They're just... ships!” Yamato starts to fidget with her hands, staring at them intently to avoid your searching looks. “We... don't really know what we are. The girls have different theories... some are... nice, and some....” she shrinks into the corner, bending a potted fica plant as she invades its space.

Goto looks physically ill. “Oh. My god.”

You nod.

“My ship,” he mutters. “My ship.”

You nod again. He rubs his face as a shudder wracks him from head to toe.

“Tsukumogami,” he breathes.

“It would seem so,” you reply quietly.

“Ummmmmmmmmm-”

“It doesn't sound cute in English, Yamato,” Goto grunts, “Stick with ah-nooo~ or spit it out.”

Yamato visibly cringes, but still puts her trembling hand into the air. “C-c-c-can I a-a-sk-”

“Yeah, whatever,” Goto moans.

“Why are you both so...”

You both turn to stare at her.

One minute it's good ol goofy Canada, being all fuzzy and hick and subtly baguette-smelling, and then -

They just realized they are discussing the fact that actual, in-service ships, boring old real-world steel hulls and shit, apparently have their own ship-girl spirits - in the same room as an actual ship-girl who's manifested her own fleshy body. Naturally the first thought to pop into their heads is "YOU KNEW!"

But she didn't. None of the shipgirls know it. They're not even aware of it, for some reason - they're just as confused about their origins and the nature of their physical bodies, and even their very existence. On the flip side, Yamato, who spent most of the war dockside, is confused as to why two sailors are treating this revelation as deeply significant, when they are already up to the gills in walking, talking ship-spirits.

A thousand salty sailor stories suddenly have the ring of truth. Mankind has been making boats for millenia.
Depending on when they started becoming sentient, there have been nigh on millions of sentient ships out there that humanity simply -never- knew about.
So far, nobody was certain about the shipgirls. Maybe they were just off shots, not all ships had it in them. Maybe it was just warships. Maybe it was just -big- ships. Could be anything. But this?
This says that every single ship humanity has ever made is alive. Maybe they aren't all fully sentient. Maybe they aren't even really self aware. But they are alive. And hell, does it stop at ships? Even if it does, that's still thousands of sentients. This isn't just a few individual cases. This is an entirely new species.
Mankind has created Life. And we never even knew we did it.

Sailors have fought on ships; sailors have died on ships. Before, they were just objects. While sailors may have had superstitions, ships were empirically unalive. To the public thoughts on ships ranged from patriotic symbols, to simple curiosities. Ships, when past their prime were scrapped when no longer needed. Now, we knew that they have heart, they have feelings, and they can hum for Christ’s sake.
They. Are. Alive.
They are our countrymen, they are our comrades, they are Heros God damn it.
This is a new reason to fight, this is a new reason to win. Hell, this might even be a new way to win.
This changes everything.

This, precisely. It also applies to the British armed forces. When your military is tiny, you can afford to be very selective.

True Story, I almost enlisted in the US Army halfway through college - the ROTC program was perfectly willing to take me. Could've gotten command of a platoon of Abrams tanks. (I did not hear this from a recruiter but a very bored ROTC officer who obviously wanted to get back to his deskwork, so it's not just someone blowing Recruiter Promises up my ass.) Almost went for it.

Yeah, a journalism major in charge of four M1A2s. That would've been swell, huh? But they needed the manpower. Now they'd giggle and throw rocks at me till I left the recruiters office. It's all relative, man.

Sorry I'm late, but wanted to put my two cents in anyway. It's a big deal because for all the navies of the world treat their ships like living things - when push comes to shove you save the crew at the cost of the ship because the ship is easier to replace than people are. Furthermore, when a ship gets to the end of its life, you usually scrap it for what you can get in the open market for parts to offset the cost.

Except niw we know all of our ships are alive. which means every ship we've ever scuttled was basically murder, every ship we've scrapped is murder AND basically organ theft, and every ship we've let rust away in ordinary basically amounts to child abuse/neglect. So yah, this is a big fucking deal. Anybody think it's okay to scrap destroyers now?! Who wants to be a child murderer?

So, yah ... shit.

I mean, it MIGHT be murder. We'd have to find a recording of a ship being scrapped and listen to it to find out if it's a nice comfortable end of life or absolute nightmare fuel.

Fun fact, when I was in the Navy there was a point when we had to have half the reactor department file through the ship's print shop to reach our training classroom. They were finishing up an issue of the ship's magazine, which for the record was a retarded waste of budget. We could have used that money to stock the correct gaskets for the ship's firefighting nozzles, but NOOOOOOOO.

Oh, and Settle just traded steel hull ships for his shipgirls in the last battle, not realizing at the time that both ship and crew were alive. Same with the battle of LA - that coast guard cutter -- living person. Goto commanded a ship, never knowing it was alive. And Settle's ship is coming back -- and its alive too. So Higgins is a shipgirl like a bunch of people wanted/predicted -- but (surprise) she was actually one all along!

So ... yah ... a lot of shit we've taken for granted is turned on its head. And that's not even taking into account the possibility this applies outside of ships (airplanes anyone?). But I'm not going to open that Pandora's box because what we've already got to deal with is giving me a headache...

Alright, well, since I've finally done a writeup, I might as well post it.
http://pastebin.com/XmAb9bQR

If you're wondering why it's so short, and doesn't have much interesting in it, that's because it's basically an introduction. I plan to make a series of write-ups, focusing on more minor events back in the US. Take it for what you will, I just felt the need to get -something- out there. Although, if this steps on any of the other writer's toes, for one reason or another, I'll drop it here and now. That's all from me.

True, but before the ships had no options in life besides scrapping or sinking. Also, unless they manifest a human-form, there is no need to treat metal conventional ships any different. Though more respect should be shown for them, now that we know they could potentially come back in human form some day.

Now, if they decide to/or are summoned to human-form, they are more or less immortal, though not invulnerable. At that point, scrapping is no longer an option. It is a cowardly end, instead of acting as guardians of humanity as a whole.

Scrapping is retirement for non-manifested ships, but it also death, and the ship-people have more to offer humanity than simply being ships now.

They may have started as ships, but they are human now, and we don't murder people for their organs.

Any ship-person that dies should do so with their boots on after fighting to the last or protecting others. No suicide, no target range, no scrapping, just a good death in combat or in a disaster.

Ship-people are also perfect for long-range colonization of space. Even after the last conventional human dies, ship-people will stand as a monument that we existed. They have more to offer humanity and the ship-kin far better alive than dead.

To paraphrase an old movie, where an elderly judge is talking to a young District Attorney: "The compensation of certain kinds of low-paid government work is, every now and then you get to nail an evil son-of-a-bitch right to the wall."

Guys like you tend to make a zillion bucks, then they buy a Ferarri at age 45 to try and compensate for being fat and balding early because they overstressed themselves. Wait a minute - we may be able to deal with our political problem by threatening the nationalists with exposure of the fact that all ships are alive. Can you imagine the shitstorm from the ICJ at The Hague - if ships are alive then we're talking war crimes and all kinds of bad shit. And the IJN certainly sent plenty of ships to particularly bad deaths. No statute of limitations on war crimes so .. Yah. That would be bad. US never signed off on the ICJ so we don't give a shit. But Japan would get the shit kicked out of it - we're talking international embarrassment and condemnation.

Worth a througt at least, since it seems like we're out of political options.

Also, to change the subject slightly, 13th Amendment applies if ships are sentient - to echo the anon earlier that mentioned slavery/indentured servitude.

Almost forgot, Fleet Week started in NYC yesterday! MIssed the parade of ships coming into the harbor, but I know that I'll be able to tour any one of two DDGs (the Farragut and the Bainbridge), an LHD (USS Bataan), an LSD (USS Ft McHenry), a bunch of RCN botes (a DD and two minesweepers), and some Coast Guard and USNA patrol botes.

Gonna try and get on one of the DDGs on Monday for Memorial Day, as I'm busy the rest of the week and weekend. Might as well check out the Intrepid while I'm at it too, since they're docked right next to each other.

Got to go on the Wasp and tour its air complement and Marine vehicles back in 2012, and just missed getting on the USS New York (complete with its own 9/11 memorial since it was forged with steel from Ground Zero) by a couple of hours since they closed the tours early at the Staten Island Homeport where it was docked (around 3 when the website said around 5) a year earlier. Shame, because I always wanted to check out that ship, since I was 3 blocks away from the WTC on 9/11.

If nothing else, I'll have to deal with boatloads of drunk sailors riding the Staten Island Ferry back to their ships docked at the Staten Island port in Stapleton.

My 'argument' is that there is a level of legitimacy to the anger of the Abyssals. They know their crews knew them for what they were. They know the legends, they know the stories, they've felt the love or died pining for it.

Let's be perfectly fair, who the fuck would have believed that some old sailing superstition actually had any basis in fact.

I mean many plane crews and car owner feel the same way about those machines as sailors do about ships. Yet neither of those have turned against us, but the Abyssals did.

Whatever anger the Abyssals feel, humanity had reason on a whole to believe ships were anything more than useful, sometimes beautiful, pieces of transportation equipment.

We'll need to start treating ships better to minimize chances it comes back as an Abyssal later. But whatever beef they have with humanity, it's not something we could have reasonable known about till the Abyssal war happened.

"Everybody else should have known better that literal magic exists" is a shit thing to expect.
Murdering thousands in a surprise strike and countless more in a total viscous war is just about an unforgivable way to go about addressing it.

Thanks to Naka and Parker we've learned that there's no actual inexplicable line between abyssal and shipgirl. That cuts both ways. When you're not a mindless puppet, when you're actively and intelligently scheming to the genocide of nations, you don't get to fucking whine about your grievances.

Except even in those oppressed populations, communication was possible with them from the get go.

We had no warning, no attempt at even airing their greivences, before the Abyssals just up and started destroying shit. They don't get go play the 'oppressed' card after that.

We still need to treat current ships better even if the never take a human form, but the current group of Abyssals (outside special cases like Naka, Shigure, the AWOL crew, and Texas) are unthinking animals that need to be put down. RFV needs to be put down because they're intelligent and free willed, but still fighting to destory humanity.

OK, maybe 'unthinking' was an exaggeration, but they are still trying to destroy humanity for crimes it didn't know it was committing against entities we didn't know existed.

...Once again, I must say that I agree with you, fully... from our perspective.

But from the Abyssal perspective, it could have been something much more different. They could have understood us, and tried to tell us with their own methods long before the Abyssal War ignited.

Hell, the existence of those nautical rumors and superstitions possibly implies that some individuals were more in tune with those esoteric means of communication than others.

But when decades, then centuries, pass by, with no indication that none of their cries for freedom from oppression are heard? With those who try to convince other people otherwise dismissed as crazy?
Well, some might take it into their own minds to lash out, only to find themselves still completely ineffective. Sure, say a pump blows, or an engine quits working. Or something important breaks, with fatalities sustained by the ship's crew as part of the incident. What often happens at that point? Either the ship is repaired... or if it's old/the damage is too extensive, it goes to the breakers.

That anger about not being able to communicate builds up, and up, and up. Eventually, the intelligent spirit becomes twisted by hate and rage, and then finally, by harnessing that energy, manages to tear through the ether and bring themselves into the physical world. Most are completely lost to the id, but some of their number retain some aspects of intelligence - and a few are even fully sapient, like Erry and Terry.

Which came first, the Abyssals... or the kanmusu?

>>
>>185210
Then where did the hate originally come from?

The first thing they did when encountering humanity was a 'KILL, MAIN, BURN", so I don't think it could have started on the human end of things, because we didn't have a clue they were a thing yet.

Now after that human hatred of the Abyssals could have fed the cycle, but it wasn't as if we even knew their were any sapient entities in their ranks.

No matter what, this really does boil down to them striking first over issues that humans had no inkling of, and then never giving the world at large to think of them as anything but mindless monsters till a few days ago.

Well, I mean. Look at Texas; she's somewhere on the spectrum, what with her persistent eye problems, and her anger stems back to being mistreated and essentially lied to for many years. As museum ships go, she got the shortest end of the stick it was possible to get until very recently, and while eventually those who loved her came through for her, that doesn't really address or alleviate the sting of neglect or the rage at being left to rot in agony.

Erebus and Terror's fates were horrific and need no description. Good men died in the grip of madness and all they could do was watch. That'll leave you with some anger to resolve, especially at the people who ordered you into the blind white and then left you to die.

Et cetera

So forth.
>>
>>185264
Still hits the pitfall of humanity not knowing and no ships having manifested human-form till the Abyssals struck.

Whatever grievances they have, they never gave humanity a chance to redress them before killing thousands, tens of thousands probably, in surprise attacks across the globe.

All this trying to make the Abyssals sympathetic is making them rather the opposite, as the layers of the onion are pealed back. It would be different if they had even issued one ultimatum/decree about "You have wronged us, that is why we will make you suffer." But they didn't even do that.

Shit, even the Covenant had the courtesy to tell us we were abominations before their gods before starting to glass planets in earnest.
>>
>>185298
And I can't really speak about 'the Abyssals'. I can speak for specific ones, generally ones I've written. I don't write the overarching plot and there are mysteries here I don't have the answers to. My girls woke up to a world already at war and chose sides accordingly.

Nope. Battleships will be modeled into the Valiant-class of 'super heavy cruisers'.
...Which, going by the way things have progressed in KCQ-verse, would nigh-on instantly go Full Abyssal upon popping up.

Nah, that one's for my own fleet. The official HFB one (when it drops) will be modeled after CV-6 (if she ever pops up).
Because the fact that the UNSC actually doesn't have an 'Enterprise' in their navy is a damn shame, and one that I intend to correct.

>>185250
>Then where did the hate originally come from?
You are trapped in some esoteric space, able to see the world around you, but unable to interact with it outside of your metal body, which is limited in the ways that it can do so. Eventually you will up enough energy to generate a new form, so as to be able to interact with those that call you home, even if temporarily - and yet you cannot speak to them, cannot reach out and touch them...

And then one day, your service is up. Some fortunate ones might end up as museums, to be admired for their achievements. Some might end up in the breakers, being rent apart piece by piece (and who knows, the ship-soul might be released during this process, to either move on to some other plane of existence, or to no longer be bound to an object, and be free to travel the world independently).

And some are sunk, either in battle or by natural causes.

Not every ship-spirit is the same. Some take to their rest peacefully. Some may look on with regret.

And some may have the seeds of resentment take hold and blossom into rage, hate, and other forms of general discontent. How dare they be ignored? Or perhaps their ship-forms 'died', leaving the spirit within under the impression that they had unfinished business in this world - for those that died in combat, that might be as simple as seeking revenge on the country that sank them.

There are multiple potential origin stories for various Abyssal spirits. Some may feel resentment at the treatment given them. Some may feel that their assigned task has not been completed yet (usually combat related). And some may just want to see the world burn around them.
>>
>>185319

Way back when in Thread #103, some anon had the idea to call Erry and Terry 'wendigo boats'. Now, the rest of the posts were essentially scaremongering (ERMERGERD THEY WILL HIJACK OUR BOOMERS), but the anon did raise a good point.

Erebus' and Terror's fate pretty much hits every single criteria to birth(?) a wendigo. Especially the cannibalism.

>>185331
>not like the UNSC had much of a choice in that matter,
The Valiant pre-dates the Human-Covenant 'war'.

>The Valiant class showed promise during initial testing and evaluation, but cost overruns and delays in incorporating next-generation fusion drives seemingly doomed the class. Less than two years after entering service the Valiant was stricken from the UNSC Navy rolls and partially scrapped.

TL;DR: How to Create Abyssals 101.

Now, if you want to talk about cannon fodder being tossed up into the meat grinder with no expectation for survival, I will pull up the Halberd destroyer.

>Its modular design meant it could be easily configured for different missions, but the realities of resource shortfalls during the Covenant War meant most Halberds were configured purely for escort duty, with entire subsystems left out to reduce construction time.

Whoo boy.

What game is this?

Diluvion. Haven't heard anything about it in ages. It had a successful kickstarter but was supposed to come out at the end of last year.

>(I wonder if they share the same weakness to fire.)
Well, they're wooden ships.
And Settle's dreamscape turned to one of burning hellfire as he took control of it in his rage.
On the other hand, volcano symbolism.

I guess that makes sense.

By the way, thanks for posting the gif of that image - that hold can have a far different implication for what may be about to transpire than a friendly chin-rub.

Jun'you is for both lewding and drinking.

So I am late to the party tonight but my thoughts on the current situation is if Settle can't go to God, and Goto can't or won't go to his, why not have the shipgirls themselves call out for some kind of response to the yaks interference? Naka could mention the yaks trying to get her to do porn, or whatever "great idea" they had for her, and everyone already knows yaks tried to off a foreign military officer, so there IS evidence of their interference. For extra OOMPH!!! maybe have DesDiv6 plead for protection from people wanting to use THEM in porn too. Like on TV. Or the internet. Then have SHokaku mention how she's so frightened she may have to immigrate to the US to get away from them (yaks, not DesDiv6). Sure not all the arguments would be the full truth, but enough of it would be true to cause people to cast some questioning glances. And isn't that enough for Japanese society?

Because doing so would require getting the yak label to stick to the political opposition, and that would already be a victory right there.

Naka is probably the only one savvy enough to pull off such a statement, and an idol going political is a bad recipe.
Kaga could also be appropriate, but she's in an interesting position with her opinions on the whole nationalism thing.

Just popping in to say that this is apparently a thing being added to Kantai Collection.

Do you really think the yaks were dumb enough to try to whore out what is in effect a national symbol? I always read that exchange as them wanting to be making money off her idol shit, not try to make her turn tricks. I can't even rationalize them thinking they could get her doing lewds without assuming them to be kids-show villain level stupid.

The Yakuza are legitimately awful people and they would absolutely try to exploit a shipgirl if they could get away with it.

The thing to remember about yaks is that for all their talk about honor and duty and filial piety and rules, they are still criminals, and none of that shit ever really applies to their victims, their 'products', or even to their rivals. Unless it's convenient to bring it up. A yak will make a big show about an insult or a breach in protocol, but they are just as willing to do the same, if not worse, if they know they can get away with it.

They don't have to be kid show villains to suggest porn to a shipgirl. They just have to be yakuza.

I'm not at all questioning that, I'm questioning how fucking dumb you'd have to be to try to pressure somebody with her abilities and backing into it. Although, I don't have any real clue what sort of public persona Naka presents when acting as an idol. For all I know, she acts like the sort of ditz who'd fall for it.
