There's blood in your mouth. You try to spit it out, but more replaces it. Your ears are ringing, blocking out all other sound... no, wait, that's the alarm. You try to move, get your bearings, but you don't have any power. Slowly, your eyes come into focus, shaking off smoke and fire.
No arm.
It's the first thing you realize, that your entire left arm is missing from the shoulder down. Perhaps fortunately, the scream that rises in your throat is choked by blood and you pass from panic to zen acceptance by the time your coughing fit dies down.
The other reason you can't move is that you're trapped in rubble from the waist down. This is the data grail room, you realize, officially the Embarkation Room, but nobody calls it that. As your focus clears, you begin to see it clearly - the black shadow sweeping through the room, pouncing from wall to wall, falling on anything that moves and rending it apart. The noise would make you sick if you had the energy for it.

... want to live?

The words aren't spoken, aren't heard, but you understand them clearly as they ricochet around your head. Of course you do.

Then, reach out your hand.

It takes you a moment to get the kind of mental clarity you need to do something like that, but you eventually manage to raise your one good hand. The black shape notices, its edges swirling and sizzling as it turns towards you, two bright lights in what must be its head blazing as it locks onto the target. It lets out a noise like a tiger's roar run backwards through a dialup modem and pounces towards you...
... but as its arm descends, someone stands between you, stops it flat; the impact makes a shockwave that rattles over the room, pushing away spark and surge. You look up at your savior, and you see...

Since I probably won't use bold in text, *preferring to use asterisks because I'm a pleb and JQOP is a huge influence on me*, I'm basically going to use it as OOC, for giving non-narrative feedback and/or clarification. Speaking generally, I don't believe in rolling dice. Usually, I'll present a few options as well as a "freeform" choice; if there's no freeform choice given, then you're limited to the options given. Obviously, I'll go with whatever has the most votes, but I try and work in bits and pieces from other votes as well if they don't go against the winning vote, especially with freeform decisions.

>... a girl in ornate armor and riding boots, wielding a long polearm.

With the sound of metal on metal, the girl before you swings her spear, flinging the monster back across the room. She spins it to absorb the recoil, then spreads her legs and lowers her hips, taking a stance with the point of the naginata levelled at the thing's throat.
"Allow me just a moment. Don't die before then...!"

Great. Thanks.

She springs across the room, wrapping her weapon around her waist to hide the point's path, then transitioning into a brutal series of lunging stabs, coming out as a blur. The monster can't avoid them all; some clank off its edged arms or miss by scant inches, but most pierce its black body, obliterating it piece by piece.
Hitting the ground with both feet planted firmly, the girl lets her last thrust carry her weapon almost out of her hand, so that she can grasp it by the base and let rip with a wide swing, separating the thing's grinning head from its awful body. Both parts of it hit the ground with a not-quite-wet *thud*, then quietly dissolve into smoke and are gone.

She comes back to you, holding her naginata at her side. The words that come out of her mouth seem unnecessary, that she's saying them because they're being forced out of her rather than because she wants to.

"... I ask of you. Are you my Master?"

You manage to get that out, but you're far enough gone by the time she starts peeling rocks back off you that that's about the last thing you see - her flinging them aside like they don't even matter.

You really want to live, huh? It's like you're just driven by something else entirely. Well, things are gonna get a lot harder from here. Why don't we talk for a bit? You don't have any complaints, right? I mean, heh, you aren't really moving anywhere for a while, you know. So? Why don't you tell me what you want? Tell me why you came here as a Grail Knight to begin with.

What, you aren't even a Grail Knight? ... what the hell are you doing at Chaldea, then? Well, it's not like it matters. Alright, I'll fill you in. This place is Chaldea, a secret base with, basically, an artificial holy grail. See, originally, it was planned to work as a Laplace-style supercomputer, but then it stopped being able to predict the future after 2016, so obviously something really fucking bad happens, and Grail Knights are Master candidates who have been pulled into help stop it. Oh, a Master is someone who has a Servant, like that blue-haired Rider you pulled in. As for what's going on, well, you're probably gonna die right now unless you pull your shit together, so let's keep going with the conversation. So, now that you know what's going on, how about you answer the question?

>>18580

Power, huh? On the one hand, that's pretty jerkish, but on the other, there's nothing wrong with a living organism wanting to survive. That's the law of nature, after all. It's like the golden rule, y'know? Whoever has the gold makes the rules. But if you want power, this is the right place. See, the grail that they have here, that's what summoned up that Servant for you, but there's all kinds of stuff you can use it for if you pull through this and live. Well, if it's power you want, I'll give you a bit when you wake up. Something you can use to help with your battles.

So, Anon, any questions? Or are you ready to wake up?

Waking up isn't pleasant - your eyes snap open and you're treated to the "enjoyable" sensation of burning needles running up and down you're spine. You start to sit up but an arm across your collar pushes you back down into the pillows. "Don't move!"

... it hurts, but you manage to obey the instruction, gasping for breath as pain ripples up and down your body. Some of it's concentrated on your right hand, but most it comes from your spine and where your arm *should be* - wait... where your arm... is?

... you're not sure how long it takes before the pain stops, because you haze in and out. When you're finally able to breathe without wanting to die, you get the chance to look around... the room's sterile, hospital room kind of, but you get the impression it's been macguyvered out of... what used to be a changing room, maybe? It's mostly hanging drapes and stretchers propped on makeshift supports. Your Servant is at your side, seated with her back against the wall, propped up on her naginata and dozing gently.

Looking down, it becomes apparent what's become of your arm... it's been replaced. Not by another arm, but by machinery, all metal and wires. You try curling your hand and find that it responds surprisingly well... you don't have any sensation, obviously, but you'll get used to it. The back of your still-remaining hand has three neat little red sigils carved into it, like a diamond over a blade-winged butterfly.

"Looks like you pulled through. Not exactly the intended orientation activity, but we're not going to complain.

The suited woman standing over you pulls up a folding chair from somewhere out of your sight and drops into it, loosening her tie slightly as she eases back in the chair. "My name is Tanaka Kie. You can call me 'Director'. I'm sure you've got a lot of questions, so why don't we get started?"

The Director steeples her fingers together in front of her mouth, considering you. It takes you a moment, but you realise that, like you, she has a series of red seals on the back of her hand - although hers looks like a series of firebursts. "Put simply, something emerged from the Cyber Grail, which isn't supposed to be possible, and attacked us, which is really supposed to be impossible. Most of the techs working the room died and the base is currently sealed off from the outside; we haven't been able to contact anything outside of Chaldea. As for your arm, we can't exactly send a Grail Knight into the Cyber Grail without two hands, so you got something a little bit... special. Normally it wouldn't be possible at all, but it seems like your body reacted to the Reality Marble in the gate room and your Magic Circuits shifted, connecting to that arm of yours. In a bit you'll be able to use it like it's your own arm, and it's been imbued with an artificial Magic Crest, like the Tohsaka family magecraft."

>>18970
That makes her smirk. "Masters are valuable. Put simply, I own your ass now. Well, it's not like you have any room to complain, if you want to avert the world's destruction and live to see 2017. Get some rest and eat something; when you can move I'll be sending you on an exploration of the Fuyuki realm that's appeared on the other end of the Grail."

She stretches a little, making her back go 'pop'. "Any questions?"

>"Actually..."
>"No questions."

"Alright. I'll see you in a few hours." She leaves and takes her chair with her. You pass the next hour or so in silence - a clerk-type in a tired labcoat brings you a fairly sparse meal, but you fall on it ravenously anyway. After another, your Servant finally speaks up.

"... Rider. That's my class. Is there anything you'd like to know? It would behoove you to gain an understanding of my ability before we take to the field."

"... my name is Tomoe-gozen. In life, I faithfully served my lord and husband, Minamoto-no-Yoshinaka, until the end of his own." Her fingers tighten around the haft of her weapon, tight enough that her gloves creak and crack with the force. "... on foot or on a mount, I can ride over any terrain and strike with the force and valour of a hundred men. In all the armies of the Heike, none can claim a higher achievement than I. ... whether I fight at your side as your retainer or range away at your request, I will bring you honour above any other."

When you ask about her Noble Phantasm, she's obviously surprised, and she looks away, refusing to meet your gaze. "It is... complicated. However, I'd prefer to not use it at all... hopefully, since it doesn't seem as if I've been called here to be part of an official Grail War, it won't become necessary. With your conversation with Tomoe finished, you almost feel good enough to start moving around, and since near enough is good enough, you make the effort and push yourself up. You've been redressed in a hospital gown, which isn't flattering, but it'll certainly do for the moment. The rest of the makeshift infirmary doesn't seem to be as bad-off as you; it looks like most of your new colleagues were either lightly wounded or dead, but bandages and the acrid sterility of antiseptics are the order of the day. Unsurprisingly, nobody is in much of a mood to talk, so you head out...

Chaldea, as it turns out, is basically a high-tech bunker; it's well-lit and white and sci-fi, but it's still very obviously a bunker... it's just designed to defend an attack from the middle of the bunker, rather than an attack from outside. At Tomoe's suggestion, you swing by the crew quarters first; while you were out, she overheard the Director convening with some staff and assigning you quarters of your own... well, more like quarters belonging to some dead guy, but the place has already been emptied and cleaned. You find a your-size uniform in the closet - white jacket and slacks over black shirt and boots, which is a bit of a mess with your left arm but you manage, and sure enough you're starting to get feeling back in it.

Having put on what may well be the last suit you ever wear, where do you want to head to first?

The training range is basically what you'd expect, at first - but when you walk past the shooting range, the room you find yourself in is basically just a big cube, with each wall and floor panel holding a... projector? Encased in glass.

"Hey, new meat. You sure you're good to be walking around?"
The acidic voice draws your attention back behind you, to the two standing there - well, the brunette one is a woman, but you'd be hard-pressed to call the other one anything but a girl. "I heard you managed to summon from the Cyber Grail during the attack. You're pretty good." She appears to be sizing up your Servant until the woman with her taps the top of her head.

You clasp her hand and give your own introduction, and like her, you give Tomoe's name as 'Rider' rather than revealing her real name. You're probably on the same side, but you may as well not open up any further than she has. Svetlana gets a little smirk on her face. "Well, you're not an idiot. I hear the Director's chosen you for the expedition, but I'll be going along too to provide ranged support with Archer."
Archer gives a small bow from the waist. She's still smiling, but something about it doesn't quite reach her eyes. "This is a good chance to get your feet under you and impress the Director, so you probably shouldn't waste it. I'll be happy to bail you out if something goes wrong, so you can feel free to be a little reckless if you want."

You can feel Tomoe bristle beside you at the implied insult, but she holds her tongue for the moment.

I forgot about the b8-posting. It's going to be sodoku-inducing. Hopefully /qst/'s obscurity will allow it to fly under the radar.

With her comment blown off, Archer disappears into ether behind Svetlana, who folds her arms, making her body almost disappear into her heavy jacket. "If you haven't gone by the bridge yet, you might want to head there first. There's a leaderboard up there that tracks all the Masters; you and I are at the bottom at the moment." She doesn't look happy about that at all. "Well, I guess that's why I'm being fed to the new dungeon. Listen up, rookie, the only way you get any kind of privilege at Chaldea is by topping the leaderboard. Get up there and you get to pick and choose your missions and life's pretty damn cozy. It's how the Director entices the best performance out of everyone."

Looks like that's definitely going to have to go on your list of things to do around here... especially if you want to start exercising some of the power you're craving. You give Svetlana a goodbye and head out with Tomoe in tow.

The cafeteria is mostly empty at present - well, maybe it would be better to call it a galley, since it's fairly spartan. Barring the galley crew, there's only one other person in here: an immaculately dressed, handsome young man quietly eating a crumbed chicken and rice dish. The other point of interest about him, mind you, is the honking great sword leaned up against the bank of his chair, beautifully detailed with silver inlays. It has to be about as long as he is, although it's more like a longsword in shape. When he notices you, he nudges out the chair opposite him with the heel of his boot, making an obvious invitation.

>Join him.
>Have lunch separately.

You grab your own meal, and Tomoe does the same, surprisingly at ease with getting her rice and tuna doled out at a modern galley. Rather than sitting at a right angle to the pair of you, she pulls a chair to share one side of the table with you, making it clear where she stands. Her opposite number raises an eyebrow at her, then looks over at you.
"New meat. I'm Howard Stern. I top the leaderboards here at Chaldea. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get to the gate room in time during the attack earlier, but I hear you saved everyone you could, so I'm grateful. Apparently the Director is throwing you off a cliff later, so if you want to know anything about the other side, you can ask me."

>"Where's your Servant?"
>Ask about the Fuyuki 'dungeon' that appeared.
>Ask about previous excursions through the Cyber Grail.
>Or...?

"My Servant?" For a moment, he's puzzled, but then understanding crosses his face. "Ah, I don't need something like that." When he says 'something', Tomoe's chopsticks, that she's been using with dainty grace, clack together, but she doesn't actually say anything... yet, anyway.

"Basically, the Cyber Grail constructs an artificial time disjunction, which we Grail Knights then enter. Technically, the 'dungeon', as some of the lessers call it, isn't actually the time period in question, but once the problem that is perceived to be distorting the flow of time and causing the destruction of the world after 2016 is sorted out, the Cyber Grail inverts the Reality Marble and applies the logic of self-repair to the timeline, retroactively returning it to the state it was in to begin with. The Fuyuki 'dungeon' is different because it connected to the Cyber Grail from the other side, not the other way around; our probes put it somewhere around 2004 AD. We believe that the creature that attacked was sent through from that side after the Fuyuki 'dungeon' appeared, rather than Fuyuki appearing afterwards."

He finally pauses to make sure you've got all that, even though most of it is full of the kind of terms that would make Einstein shit his pants.

>"... thanks." (I have no idea what most of that meant.)
>Play it off like you got it all anyway.

It takes Stern a very long time to say 'yes', and you can almost feel him judging you from across the table. To break the silence, you query him on what he meant by not needing a Servant, and he just shrugs at you.
"I have my own way of fighting. That said, my effectiveness on the battlefield speaks for itself; just look at the leaderboard. If we're paired together, I'll show you, sometime."

Tomoe finishes her meal and puts her bowl down rather sharply, breaking Stern's line of discussion. "Confidence in oneself is good, but one must be careful to ensure it doesn't become arrogance."
Stern looks at her, then back at you, and finally puts his finished meal down and rises, casually picking up his huge sword and slinging it over his back with one hand. "I have business to attend to. In future, when you interact with me, make sure your bitch is muzzled."

Stern glides out almost before you can get a word in, leaving Tomoe silently fuming after him, her whole small body quivering angrily.

>"Calm down."
>"We'll repay the insult."
>Leave it be.
>Or...?

Tomoe takes a deep breath and does indeed calm herself, dutifully trailing after you as you peel off in the opposite direction to Stern. She's in the process of giving something that might be an apology when an alarm rings through the building, followed by the Director's 'dulcet' tones on the PA.

"New guy, Svetlana, get to the Gate Room. It's time for work."

Tomoe steps up to your side and gives you a nod. "We can do this."

>Chapter End

Calling it here because I actually need to get some sleep tonight and I won't be posting tomorrow because I'll be at uni, so the thread will autosage before I get back to it. I'll probably post up the second thread next weekend. Good work, everyone.

Thanks for running it's a fun quest.
Also if we are >>20636 do we have more injuries or is it just the arm?
>>
>>27388
Just the arm, plus minor scrapes etc. from being buried in burning rubble.
>>
>>27390
Also how old are we or is that still undetermined?
>>
>>27391
I'm thinking younger rather than older, but probably early 20s, rather than middle-aged, since Chaldea has been trying to fetch master candidates while they're young.
>>
>>27401
Do you have a twitter account?
It would be a lot easier to see when you run the quest again.
>>
>>27411
I might make one if we survive more than a couple of threads.
