The feeling from your nape to halfway through your leg is a hard but comfortable one, unlike the one going under your right shoulder. There is not one thing somebody could not get used to, and when it comes to you piercing pain is something you’ve dealt with all your life. Your main concern are then the big drops of sweat over your face, a straight clue to your lack of sleep.
And not even that bothers you that much; after all you had a whole lot to think about. Still do. Footsteps echo faintly nearby. Your body hard and your mind tired, you can’t blame your old bones for being unable to lift you now.

Your eyes slowly drift from the fancy black roof into the eyes of the broken horn Leader. You blink; she mirrors. And your mind briefly drifts towards the mighty feast last night, your way to make the himehorns make peace with each other. Wary at first, it seems getting drunk has a tendency to help with these kind of issues.

It isn’t long before you find yourself being pushed upwards by the struggling, gasping Leader as your haremhorns whisper to each other and, as it seems, giggle slightly. You briefly wonder what she could have to say as the upwards struggle end and you are pushed through a door. The many details and colors across the aisle draw your attention, then your brief tour towards nohorn culture is cut short as another black door draws you into another room, the barely sweet and musky scent barely covering the one of the broken horn Leader as she closes the door shut.

After she let's herself fall in the shining black chair in front of you, you find yourself staring a bit downward at the broken horn Leader. She turns the chair towards the table, and her cold stare fixes itself on your eyes.

“And you can trust that I did my fair share of delving in what meaning could this have… and failed, with no choice but to believe you almost ruined our little show on a whim.”

You close your eyes and smile. “So, you did not”.

She frowns her eyes barely. “I am not one for childish stories. And I do hope, with-“

“I do not. I am not.”

She “hmms” at this calmly; in it, you notice a faint contrast with her serious demeanor, and wonder why you pay attention to this kind of details.

“There is little doubt they would have realized about your defect... rather sooner than later.” she says, then barely tilts her head to the side. “I can support you on that endeavor. But the whole musclehorn scenario, I fail to make sense out of it.”

Her wicked smile returns and you grip the handles of your wheelchair faintly.

“I take you could?”

“And gambling their hope on the way”, she says, her eyes frowning over her wicked smile. “Your little lie did gave them a reason to go on, to struggle with all these unknowns and loses… but I do feel we can agree at this point-“

“I can be quite clever when I’m not sleeping.”

“You did not even drink for your own celebration. And even so” her hand under her sleeve slightly bouncing up and down on the table, “...and even if that was the truth for some reason I fail to see” her hand stops and she stares you from below as she lowers her gaze, her wicked smile remaining and barely hidden “you are still a defective that killed a musclehorn, not even out of spite… but of sheer idiocy.”

“Are you done?” you answer, attempting a mildly bored stare.

“You do not seem fit to lead us somewhere too far from disaster.”

“You are done. I’d think.”

"And you cannot even walk. I wonder how did you even get here."

Your eyes widen slightly and you can't help but clench your fist.

"Leaderhorn" her smile widens "our truth is not pleasant. You are the very image of what our herd is going through in this very moment. They can't swallow this now; should we lie and be figured it out, perhaps because of one of our drunk hornmothers, they will forgive us."

She leans closer. She's not smiling anymore.

"I ask one thing of you only." She pauses; then says it slowly. "Apologize to me."

"It seems I failed to be clear to you" the broken horn Leader takes her horns back, the sound of her voice suddenly very calm. "They did not need to know about the incident with the musclehorn; even that haremhorn agreed to secrecy. We cannot affort to take their hopes lightly after all they have suffered, after all we have suffered."

"I still see no reason to answer to you. To them, I am the Leaderhorn; and you are just another hornmother. Not a Leader. Not any longer."

"I am fully aware; I do not intend to be the Leader now. That would be you. The Leaderhorn; our might savior, our miracle," she says this slowly and focused "our tale. Why would I listen to you? That's what you just said. And that is because you really, really want me as a friend.”

You are taken aback not by the simplicity of the threat, but by how she could say it while maintaining a neutral gaze.

I like it, but I would add:

I am here for them, and the witch trusted that I was the best for them for a reason, and I make the my decissions with them in mind. So I have no reason to apologize for something I did thinking that it was the best for them... BUT, I have to thank you, for I understand your concern and I am glad to see that you are also doing all this because you care for them as much as I do. "The truth is the only thing we have. I will not hide my mistakes. I will lead. I will be cast out for my failures or beloved for my successes. I will not hide the truth from the herd and I will not apologize for that."

"Then you ARE the Leaderhorn, I take."

You... your words get stuck in your throat. She maintains her neutral gaze towards you. Her very serious behavior is starting to get in your nerves, You clear your throat, carefully; there are drunk and sleeping hornmothers out there, and as much as you love them you don't want them awake right now.

"I am here for them" you say, closing your eyes a bit as you look at her, "and the witch trusted that I was the best for them for a reason, and I make my choices with them in mind. So I have no reason to apologize for something I did thinking that it was the best for them... "There are no remaining himehorns from my herd."

You stare dumbfolded... and her neutral gaze remains. All the anger you could have holded on to against this annoying Leader vanished with her last words, leaving a cold, empty room in your head.

She just looks at you dead in the eyes.

You grip the left handle of the wheelchair and push; it does little good. The broken horn Leader stares at you without as much as flinching, her eyes dimly going up and down as you struggle your way into standing... it would seem you are not doing so well. You take your time to sigh looking down, your big horns making your neck struggle as they push your head towards the table... then you close one eye and motion the broken horn Leader to come towards you with the only hand you got. She rises slowly and walks to your side... to your right side. You sigh... and turn your body to your right not without effort, in order to embrace her tiny body with the only arm you have left.

The wheelchair gives in making a mess of sounds as you fall right over the broken horn Leader, but she takes it in stride and keeps on standing as your horns rest on both of her shoulder. You sloowly get on both knees until you finally lift your eyes towards her, this time she looking down at you, kneeling on the floor as you take your head (and horns) back in order to meet her eyes.

"I... I just wanted to hug you."

"I see."

"If you want to do it..."

She shrugs; then looks intently towards the table; "This will do." before she gets under your only arm and helps you to your wheelchair.

And the tense silence suddenly turns awkward.

“Well...It seems we could be off to a good start, after all.” she says.

"I... I see."

The silence resumes, and you realize just how much you would like to hear her laughing. It doesn't last long; you watch her open the desk drawer and fumble with her hands in it, perhaps first trying to take them out of her sleeves. She produces a rolled big white paper and rolls it open on her side, then a pen. You stare at her quizzically with your mouth slightly open as she starts writing on it, until her eyes meet yours again.

“I take you like stories, Leaderhorn?”

"I really do, I used to tell stories to the-"

You close your mouth as she stares at you, her gaze still neutral. "So… you want to write a story?" you say, suddenly looking at the table "What for? What-”

“Yours.”

“…Oh.”

She nods. Her eyes then drift to the roof as she “hmms”, and you look at her broken horn and wonder what kind of story would hers be.

“How about this, you fought your way out of the caves out of the caves and lost your arm pushing a hornmother out of the way, then strangled the templar that killed her!”

“That... seems far-fetched enough.” You still feel a bit shy. It's not a painful feeling; you are actually a bit proud that you can afford to be shy, after all that happened in the last two... now three? days.

“I don’t see how would they prove otherwise.”

“It has to make sense if we are to lie, the less sound it sounds the easier they will doubt.”

“But it has to be great as well. Think of it, you are on a wheelchair with a single arm, it’s not like they’ll ask for proof.”

“Do you enjoy cooking?”

She shrugs. “Do I look like a haremhorn?”

Well, it is odd. Hornmothers love being pampered and simply fool around, but you were far too bored already.

“Let’s just say we have to add the right mix with the right proportions.”

She scratches her nose quickly. “Show me. Let's start with your past.”

>”Truth is good enough. I was a Leader before I laid my fist egg; I had to secretly sabotage the current Leader because her wishful thinking got the herd too happy to see straight. Then I made a prediction and fulfilled it on my own, and then another until the Leader got angry at me and took me away from the herd. Luckily almost half the herd followed me when the Southern Witch Apostle came to take me away.”
>"I grew very fast and the haremhorns took me for a musclehorn, but quickly noticed I wasn't following their orders. They took me out of the cave where I single-handedly killed a vampire, so I brought back her corpse and threw it at them; the Leader kneeled towards me and was Leader no more. The Southern Witch Apostle spoke to me and gave me a mission; to prepare for the templar invasion."

But to avoid being smelled by both the haremhorns and the musclehorns near the entrance, it takes much more than being sneaky. Not to mention you falling ri-"

"I-I think I got the point already!" you recall kneeling in front of her not too long ago.

"Oh I see. How about this, nohorn raiders attempted to steal smallhorns from your cave and you got badly wounded in order to save them, we can work on the details at our leisure."

The last time that happened all it took was a very angry haremhorn almost half the size of the cakeist.

"How would they have gone past the musclehorns?" you retort.

"Perhaps they found about one of the secret escape tunnels. We used to have some of those, I take it was common practice."

"Hmm..." you are dissapointed in your "hmm"; too strong, not soft enough.

"So, raiders?" she asks.

You nod, then stare at the paper, waiting for either smoke or fire to rise from under the pen.

"I take we are done here?" you ask.

"Almost. You can just make up the rest on your own, just make sure it sounds fancy, and heroic."

You sigh... it will be a lot to remember, but you do see her point, at least now. The Leaderhorn can't be just a hornmother; it has to be a road to happy herds, happy horns and happy eggs. It's meant to at least make them try to fit in this domain, and not give up out of spite or sadness. You notice the broken horn Leader staring at you again, her gaze neutral as usual.

"One last thing. How did you make it here?"

>“I… I was not the Leader. The Leader died. She got badly wounded when I day-dreamed in a tunnel and got ambushed by templar’s. I tried to save her; she was so brave, and her blood seemed endless… she stabbed herself in the neck with one of her horns because I couldn’t bring myself to leave her there.”

I gathered the herds closest to the surface in order to take them to Enna's domain to assemble my forces here; and if the worst was to come, to ensure the future of the himehorns as a race. "It's a burden. Lying is a burden. I know."

Hornmothers are fully aware of this fact; lying can be quite the work, and the more you lie the more you have to work; that’s why they just blurt everything out loud. It’s a quality you learned to enjoy quite a lot, even if what comes out from their mouth is just silly complains, bad jokes and arguments about things so petty you failed to realize they where there.

Because lying is nothing new to you.

You briefly recall two hornmothers arguing about the function of the marks on a bug that was on the table. Of course, one of them ended up dancing over it.

"You will have time to atone for your failures." she says, not looking at you. "That much is very, very certain."

She scribbles fast on the piece of paper as you wonder if smoke will come from under the pencil; she rolls it shut at once right after the last letter. Your sight drifts to the rolled paper placed under your chin; you take it with your only hand.
Then she stands, walks peacefully to the door and opens it with one swift, powerful motion; a haremhorn almost falls inside the room but manages to hold on to the broken horn Leader, who gently pushes her back to her feet.

The broken horn Leader turns to you. “There are many questions for us to tackle, and we have very little to work with."

"Oh, I have my means. They Witch sent a native to teach me their ways."

The broken horn Leader "hmms" as the haremhorn looks at you and scratches her head. "Then we go with that." she says, and nods absentmindedly.

You grip the left wheel and throw it backwards over and over, the wheelchair spinning with you towards the broken horn Leader. The haremhorn's gaze blooms like a flower as she watches your hand tenderly scratching the hair between a healthy and a broken horn, as the black eyes underneath follow your hand as it pats her head over and over, until you let it slide across her cheek as she meets her eyes with yours.

She just blinks at you.

"That was kind of you." she says, her gaze still the same. "I will remain here to work on the basics of our needs, I counted four hornmothers besides us and six or seven musclehorns, but as it stands we are in no shortage of haremhorns."

You open your mouth to say something... and as you notice your eyes slightly growing wet, you close it.

"I see." you say, as you share a brief stare of disappointment with the haremhorn.

"How did you get to Enna unharmed when you asked for the meat, wine and smoke?"

"I asked one of the new guards for guidance. As far as I'm concerned, the nohorns won't dare lay a finger on us without fair reason."

"You mean that musclehorn."

You... don't say a word. The broken horn Leader shakes her head.

"You managed yesterday, you will today. Odds are good and all we have." She pauses. "Almost forgot."

You feel a warm, heavy presence over your right shoulder, and meet with a long white cape with black symbols of many herds after you turn your horns slightly.

“It took them quite some tries. I recall you said the herd was a part of you now” the broken horn Leader rises one her sleeves, like pointing at sometimes from under it. “I liked that. That came out well.”

I am very aware of how slow this quest turned out this time around, but I was so busy... I did my best to catch a break every time I could. ;w;

>>192987
I meant your work! Don't get caught reading by your haremnohorns or they might wash your job out of you!

>>191982
That would have happened anyway in the meantime. Haremhorns are good with secrets! =w=

M-e-a-n.

I'm going to test a fixed schedule, too! I'd like anonhorn input on it, so either add me on twitter (@haremhorn, I should certainly add this to the main post along the archive) or tell me about it right here!
I'l keep track of every name on the pastebin, today we had no influence choices at because haremhorns are nice, kind creatures... but beware.

I was also hoping to introduce you to Lowell, who will be drawing for the Old Leader's Quest from now on... but he recently managed to fix his sleeping schedule, and may need the sunlight.
So, leave him a few words of encouragement at @Suckbruise... and do remind him not to worry so much!

All this art is really, really great and manages to capture the essence of the setting in the same manner as DanKims drawings.

Slow quest was okay for me. I actually had time to post this go around. Got lucky with my flights this time around.
