Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you resigned yourself to the role of a prophet, read a book, and had a chat with a friend.

It is currently the 1st of Yuddha, in the year 936 NH.

As you exit into the hall alongside your friend and companion, Profectus' voice draws your attention away from the servant nervously watching you out of the corner of her eye. "You know, Mik. Speaking of forms of magic which aren't easily categorized-"

"We probably shouldn't speak of them so openly in public, I agree." You cut him off before he's able to publicly declare you've revived enchanting or name you a master of lost arts which seldom few know existed in the first place. He glances towards the servant, a nod his only acknowledgement of what you've said.

As the two of you begin to navigate the halls, Profectus' voice drops to a whisper. "No, but seriously. Why don't you do anything substantive with what you've come to understand? I mean, it kind of seems like you've only used it to create trinkets."

"I'm not really sure." You admit, sighing wearily. "Lack of necessity and ideas, I suppose. I've been toying with a few ideas though. Making a ring to expand the mind, or a weapon of some sort to shoot lightening. I think both would be fairly simple artifacts to make, but I worry they may need to be further refined before I actually attempt to create them. Obviously I'd need some method of controlling the lightening weapon, I was thinking vys could work. Perhaps some sort of elaborate construction similar to my pistol whereby depressing a trigger presses a mark rune to an array activated by mark, thus firing the weapon. I feel I would need Skull Kid's assistance in constructing such a weapon in a manner that doesn't shock the user."

Profectus nods his head appreciatively. "Alright, lightning guns sound useful. I could get behind that. All I'm saying, Mik, is that you've been given a gift that you've hardly used." He can see your obvious rebuttal, and begs you hold your tongue. "I know, I know. I'm hardly one to talk. I at least recognize my laziness for what it is."

As much as you hate to admit it, he has a point. You still dig your elbow into his arm. Not hard enough to cause any real harm, but he feigns hurt nonetheless. "Perhaps I'll let you test my creations then, if you're so eager for me to put what I've learned to good use."

He shrugs his shoulders, stone hand rubbing his upper arm. "I wouldn't mind that. Gods know it wouldn't be the first time, and I imagine your artifacts would require a lot less bodily harm than the ones currently attached to me."

You fall into a comfortable silence following that conversation. Your walk through the castle is brief and uninterrupted. For some reason most of the servants seem to be actively avoiding you, one going so far as to duck into a slave's passage the very moment you stepped into the hall. You don't really consider your new appearance that frightening, and your companions don't seem to mind it either. Granted your group of friends probably aren't a good metric by which to judge the opinions of the wider populace. Especially considering that half of them cling to the societal mores of a civilization long dead.

You emerge into the courtyard to find Darzi already waiting for you, dressed in loose fitting pants and having forgone a shirt in favor of a simple cloth wrap around her breast. You allow yourself a moment to admire her as she moves through the ninety-three forms of Marsala Ve. It's strange to think that only a few months ago, seeing her bare this much skin would be unthinkable. So insecure was she regarding her scars. Now she wears the scattered collections of puckered flesh which crawl their way across her forearms as badges of honor.

Then you realize that Profectus is admiring her in much the same way you are, and jealousy rears its ugly head. You remind yourself that he likely isn't aware of the relationship between the two of you, and that Darzi would never debase herself with an elf, but it bothers you nonetheless.

“You should probably stretch, Mikhael.” Darzi's voice serves to remind you why you're here. She currently stands posed upon one foot, her other stretched nearly vertically in the air. “I don't plan on treating you gently.”

With a reluctant sigh you remove your cloak and fold it neatly, setting it aside for the time being. Then you take up your position at the opposite end of the courtyard and begin to run through your own forms. Where as Darzi moves through each stance slowly and methodically, every muscle carefully controlled, you tend to prefer more explosive burst of movement. After all in actual combat you're not going to be lightly tapping your opponents.

Profectus takes a seat on the rim of a fountain, watching passively while he enjoys that flatbread wrap creation of his. “You know,” He pauses to swallow his mouthful of meat and bread. “I never quite understood why you Samjan have to get all theatrical with your combat. We never did anything nearly this elaborate in training. Just had some wicker shields and wooden swords and we'd beat the crap out of each other.”

“Perhaps that is why the soldiers of Rhynia are infamous for their inability to act independently.” Darzi shoots back, her arm gliding slowly forward as though to strike with the elbow. “You are not trained to fight as an individual but as a group. A philosophy with its own benefits and drawbacks, but one which we have never shared.”

Prof finishes off the last of his breakfast before offering a reply. “Well it certainly served us well, considering we conquered nearly the whole of Northern Hiacia. Personal skill doesn't matter much on a battlefield, after all. When ten thousand men clash discipline wins the day.”

You frown, slipping easily back into the first form after a sweeping kick. “It's not like the Rhynian Empire managed to keep their territorial gains. For the vast majority of the war the Fortress of Eshnuk served as the border between Rhynia and Hiacia. There are notably few examples of expansion beyond, limited to the rule of but a single Emperor and lost during the reign of his successor.”

You finish running through each of the ninety-three forms only moments after Darzi managed the same, despite her initial head start. With that out of the way you turn to face one another, bowing low as a sign of respect. It seems Darzi intends to spar traditionally, judging by the fact she immediately falls into her stance, but you were under the impression that you'd be meditating upon forms first.

>You'd actually prefer to meditate using a different method, like Meditation upon Reality, so this works out perfectly.

Oh, and a quick note. I couldn't really justify Mik just spouting off about possible methods by which a battle meditation might be turned into an impossible weapon of war within the context of this post. However, it would make sense in my mind for him to bring it up after Meditation upon Forms, since the concept of a Martial Trance is very closely related.

ROOOOOOOOLL 3d10+4 (+6 from Veteran of Marsala Ve, +2 from Anatomical Knowledge, -4 due to Horny Bastard) VS DC 23 (Base 15, +8 from Master of Marsala Ve)
Given time and practice, you can eventually eliminate the -4 malus due to the horns. It will just take some adjustment to the standard Marsala Ve forms.
As per usual when it comes to sparring, spending vys would typically be considered "cheating". You'll also be fighting unarmed and unarmored.
>>

I take into account only the first three rolls. I don't really think of it as a "best of" system. I set a DC, and if two out of the first three rolls pass then it's a success. If three out of the first three rolls pass, it's a Great Success. If one out of the first three rolls pass, it's a failure. If none of the rolls pass, it's a severe failure.

We were just learning a technique about memory manipulation which is useful for learning new things.
>>
>>191698
that was about picking out specific memories and cutting them out and possibly transplanting them into our own mind

it probably causes permanent memory loss, though, so no using it on our companions until we can copy the memory instead of stealing it
>>
>>191716
Sounds like a mix of metal and nature magic to me. Insofar as the schools of magic have meaning.

Mik still has one forbidden ultimate technique he hasn't fully understood yet, and it might be more powerful than Ascension and Shaping Arts. I'm talking about truly Divine Magic, shit that the Gods and their Children do.

Check the Metaphysics Expanded bin. http://pastebin.com/ibi8j7Md

>These 'Children of the Gods' as you call them. We refer to them as Servants, and this is an umbrella term for all beings which serve the gods directly or indirectly. Separate from spirits, which once served the gods but do not any longer. Regardless, these most powerful servants which the Gods created possess a form of divine magic. It is akin to enchanting, in that it relies upon directly affecting the strings which bind reality...“The insight you gleaned likely pertained in some way to this form of magic the Children employ. Directly affecting the strings which bind reality without using vys, or the husk.

We're talking about shit so powerful, even ancient spirits don't have it. Shit so powerful, it's literally God tier.
>>
>>191874
Kill yourself you gook
>>
>>191874

>>
>>191920
Mik has yet to understand this magic past the theoretical level, much less the conceptual or practical level. I'm saying we should investigate this magic further. Shaping Arts will allow us internal manipulation, Divine will allow us external manipulation. We should see what the benefits and costs each has to offer.
>>

>>191951
diversity my ass, we've been surviving solely on water magic since we GM'd it
>>
>>191968

>>
>>191968
We've used fire and metal pretty regularly. Nature in a support capacity some times. Earth in a support capacity during a bunch of our experimentation.
>>
>>191968
We rely on Metal magic just as much as water lately. We deal with too much void shit not to.
>>
Well, this is fine. Sparring first will mean the meditation afterwards can serve as a way to stretch away any resulting soreness, thus helping with your recovery. This in mind you drop into your own stance, hands held out before you and weight balanced upon your back foot.

The match starts off equally enough. Neither of you is really willing to close with the other, so you end up exchanging kicks and a few errant punches at a distance without really scorring any major . This isn't quite the same as sparring in your heavy armor. Sure, it hurt a little to get smacked about in that, but the immense amounts of vys flowing through you no doubt alleviated any pain you felt to a large degree. This is full contact, and you've little in the way of protective equipment.

You push yourself forward and swing for her jaw, but she slaps your hand away and drills her palm into the point where you arm and shoulder meet. The entire limb goes limp, pins digging into the flesh from the tops of your fingers all the way to your neck. Darzi is quick to capitalize on your injury, following up with a swift kick to the side of your knee which buckles your leg. You try to recover with a punch to her solar plexus but she effortlessly blocks the blow and grabs you by the horns. As she falls backwards into a roll one of her feet find your chest, and you find yourself hurtling through the air.

Your back slams into the cobblestones with enough force that the wind is driven from your lungs. You numb the pain almost as a reflex, and this minor use of magic allows you to avoid writhing about on the floor gasping for air. It's still not pleasant, but at least you don't totally embarrass yourself.

Darzi offers a hand and helps you to your feet. “You're going to want to either learn to guard your head, or turn the tables on those who go for your horns. They're a rather obvious weakness though, and I can't imagine that an attempt to gore your opponent would go well for you. For now just keep your guard up and perhaps keep your head back.”

You nod, pressing your hands against your lower back and stretching as best you're able. Gods, but that hurt. Stone was perhaps not the best place to do this. Still, that was but the end of the first round. Perhaps you'll be able to turn the tables on her next time around.

Once you've recovered as best you're able, you fall into your stance once again. This time you take on a more aggressive tactic, pushing off your back foot to launch yourself forward and coiling yourself as though a snake preparing to strike. When Darzi swings her back leg forward to take your legs out from under you, you thrust your leg forward to intercept the blow.

(1/2)
>>
Your fist finds her jaw in the same moment her foot strikes your shin. It hurts, but you're not truly knocked off balance. Darzi on the other hand is sent reeling. She throws a punch in an attempt to recover but it's sloppy at best, you catch her arm and twist it upwards, only to bring your elbow down upon her shoulder. She cries out, but before you're able to finish her off you feel her fist impact your ribs. If you didn't know any better you'd almost say something was broken.

She lips out of your grip, spinning on one leg to bring her knee up into your abdomen. After that exchange the two of you separate, allowing each other a moment to recover. Then the melee is rejoined. She pushes herself forward, and though you try to ward her off with a swift kick she catches the blow and throws your leg upward. Your feet slip out from under you, and she's quick to take advantage.

She mounts you, and though you try to kick her in the side of the head as she gets close you're unable to land a meaningful blow. The tips of her fingers strike your throat, and suddenly you can't breath. She follows it with a palm strike to the chin which knocks your head against the stone. You can barely move, your eyes unfocused, and perhaps recognizing this Darzi rises to her feet. Eventually your senses return to you, but the pounding headache is an unpleasant reminder of how thoroughly she trounced you in that engagement.

She's saying something but you're having trouble hearing her. You think you might have a concussion, and channeling a touch of Water magic confirms your suspicions. You try to heal yourself but channeling vys in any significant quantity proves impossibly difficult. Then strength floods through your limbs, the veil which clouded your thoughts lifting.

“Did you hear me, Mikhael? You're not looking too good.” Darzi crouches over you, a hand rested on your chest and her concern self-evident.

You rub the back of your head, and are surprised when your fingers come away wet. The wound is healed now, but clearly at some point you were bleeding. “Sorry, I couldn't quite make it out. Think that last blow might have temporarily robbed me of my senses.”

She breathes a sigh of relief. “Gods above, I thought for a moment I'd broken your head. Do you want to call it here? I thought we might go for one more round, but we might just as well begin the meditation now.”

>Go for one more round. Third time's the charm, after all.

okay, shitposting aside, here's how I remember using elements:

fire magic has been pretty useless... until we learned soulfire or whatever the cool kids are calling it. but that's outside regular fire magic, not something we learned by meditating on fire. we can do most things fire can do with water, thanks to being a master of frostbite.

we barely use metal at all for anything other than soul shenanigans. it's good for preserving sanity, but we never used its full potential. seriously, we can probably shoot small objects like bullets by now, or possibly disarm a platoon within seconds.

nature is only getting useful just now, we barely used it without the dragon staff/armor vision until we got tremorsense recently. the dragon staff did let us avoid ambushes and pull of the shah's assassination though, so that'll change soon because shaping arts seems to require gitting gud with nature.

we rarely used earth without the sleeve because we suck at it. I can't even remember ever using it during combat, same as metal and nature. honestly, we're good enough at earth to pull of most of the techniques that make up its appeal.

now think about how often we've been using water, often without even spending vys. if we weren't a GM in it, we would've lost so many companions and body parts it's not even funny.

combine both options for solo battle meditation. See how it fares against an opponent like Darzi sans meditation trance, and then have her try it as well. That way you have a baseline to work towards, and possibly spot problems or difficulties right away before you both try it at the same time.

Fire magic governs illusions, which we use all the time for stealth and talking rolls. We also use it when defending against fire fairly often. Surya's Vice has been useful a few times, though that's recent.

The really useful application of metal magic would be getting +18 soak on rolls. +6 from marsala ve, +2 from anatomical knowledge, armor bonuses, shield bonuses, weapon bonuses. We're a monster in melee if we bother to use metal magic properly.

Agreed on nature and earth, largely.

Also, considering that you've been sparing a lot lately, and just in general getting into melee more often recently, I'll be giving you a significant bonus to your next roll to train Marsala Ve. You're one insight away from Master Rank, and I'm thinking it will probably be at least a +6 bonus. Basically, given proper preparation you'll probably reach Master the next time you train.

That's why we need to learn to fight with our horns and use them to our advantage. We can't just get rid of them, it would make Zahak sad.

Actually, that might be Chryssa, because stealth, aimbot mask, and her giant bow. Darzi is supposed to be tank, might pick up DPS as secondary once this Avatar thing gets off the ground.

Also, we should totally make Chryssa a bow, with her help, out of Spirit Ivory. There's more than enough material.

“It's going to take more than a concussion to kill me, Darzi.” You grip her by the arm, and she's quick to help you up. “We'll go for one more round. After all, I'm not going to improve if I bow out the very moment I face any sort of difficulty.”

She nods, and the two of you resume your positions at opposite ends of the courtyard. Profectus is watching avidly, perched on the edge of the fountain. Judging by the slash of a grin across his face he's been enjoying the show thus far, though you can't really begrudge him. You did invite him here to try and cheer him up, after all.

However, Profectus is not the only one watching your little sparring match. A small contingent of guardsmen have gathered upon the walls to watch, and at a glance quite a few of them aren't happy with the way things have gone thus far. You imagine Darzi has made a few people quite a lot of money.

This time around you try to fight smart. You launch yourself forward on your back foot and strike out with your left hand, trying to tempt Darzi into making a mistake of some sort. She takes your bait, slapping your hand away and stepping closer to drive her palm into your gut. However, you were planning for just such a maneuver on her part. The shot is deflected with a sweeping gesture on your part, and rather than follow up with a kick to the side of her leg, which the traditional wisdom would dictate should be your next move, you whip your head forward.

The maneuver is a little awkward, and you think you might have pulled something in your neck, but it delivers the desired results. The butt of one of your horns crunches into the side of her head, knocking her off balance. Only then do you dip low and lash out with your right foot, taking her feet out from under her. This time its her turn to smash against the cobblestone,s and you decide to do her the same favor she did you.

However, as you move in for the pin you feel her foot impact the side of your head, and then strong thighs wrapping around your neck. She twist her lower body and your shoulder smacks against the cobbles. It turns into a wrestling match, your form suddenly forgotten in favor of doing whatever is necessary to win. You strike her repeatedly in the kidney, and though it certainly seems to pain her the pressure around your neck doesn't abate.

Instead she grabs your wrist in both hands and leverages her superior position to extend it nearly to the point of popping out of the socket. You're relatively certain it's only her good grace that allows you to retain use of your arm. As the strength begins to drain from your limbs she finally release you, and Gods above that first breath of air is sweet.

Darzi disentangles herself from you, limping noticeably but otherwise unharmed. Meanwhile you're left laying upon the stone struggling to catch your breath. It stings your pride to have gotten your ass so thoroughly kicked, but you comfort yourself with the knowledge that if this had been a real fight, you would have own hands down. The fact you'll be able to extract your revenge later on in private also serves to lighten your mood.

Finally you rise to your feet, and grip yourself by the chin and the back of the head. A swift jerk to the left and to the right sends a chorus of pops echoing through the courtyard, and your neck feels immensely better afterwards. “Not my finest moment.” You admit. “But at least I think I learned something from the experience.”

Darzi is busy drinking from a skin of water, but Profectus at least gives you that strange 'thumbs up' gesture which Skull Kid seemed so fond of. You forget the exact meaning of it. “You did alright, Mik. Gods know I probably would've gotten my ass kicked twice as hard.”

His words of encouragement are soon contrasted with the distant shout of a guardsmen, his slurred voice carrying well through the otherwise silent courtyard. “Oughta be sucklin' your Momma's tit, yah horny son of a bitch!”

You don't want to cause these assholes any actual harm, but you will give them a good scare. Truthfully you think of it as doing them a favor, because any man stupid enough to taunt a Vatis with horns clearly needs to be taught a lesson. You fade from visibility in the same moment that you manifest an illusory version of yourself, your voice echoing loudly in the rear courtyard. “We ought to find someplace more secluded where we might be able to meditate in peace.”

Privately, not via the connection afforded to you by the brooches but through the force of your will alone, you communicated your actual absence. {I'll be with you in a moment, there's simply one thing I must do first. Keep on eye on those guards, if you'd like a bit of entertainment.}

Darzi at least seems confused, but Profectus at least seems to understand your intentions. His expression grows serious, and without any urging on your part the two of them quickly fall into step behind your illusion. They duck behind the marble facade of a pillar while you set off across the gardens crouched low to the ground and moving silently through the underbrush. It's largely thanks to your Nature magic that you're able to avoid sending up a flock of screaming songbirds. Their thoughts bend easily to your will, and you're able to calm them before they can send up any sort of alarm.

You emerge at the base of the wall, and scaling it becomes a simple matter of channeling Earth magic to carve yourself a few footholds. In a matter of but a few minutes you've managed to place yourself just outside the group of guardsmen. There's six of them in all, one in particular showing off a wealth of coins he seems to have won betting upon your and Darzi's fight. It's mostly silver, but there's a few gold in the pile as well. It's a generous sum considering the nature of the gamble.

The man who seems to lost the majority of his wage betting on you is likely the man who shouted the insult. He seems at least slightly drunk, likely the cause of his reckless gamble. He's tall, even taller than you, and muscular but not truly exceptional compared to most of your family's guardsmen. Truthfully you probably wouldn't have noticed him under any normal circumstance.

Of course, these weren't normal circumstances.

A wisp of fire and light weaves between the legs of the gathered men, wrapping its way around the guardsmen you believe had the sheer balls to insult you. It slowly begins to condense into something more substantive, something realer, even as the group seeks to distance themselves from their compatriot. He's left alone with the creature you've created, and though he tries to flee the uneven surface of the wall acts against him. He trips, falling hard. Though he tries to scramble away your summoned wisp follows him every panicked step of the way, its chitinous skull drawing close to the man's unprotected face.

{Say that to my face, instead of from the walls. I couldn't quite hear you from down there.} You aren't gentle, your voice thunders through his thoughts and the pained wince which flits across his face reveals the effect your communique has had upon him. A dark stain creeps along his pant leg, the stench of urine filling the air. You can't help but find the man unbelievably pathetic, but give him the benefit of the doubt. He's probably having a bad day.

Some of the guards who have managed to keep their wits about them have leveled their spears at your little wisp, so you have it disappear in a burst of fire and smoke. They jerk away in fear of the flame but there's no heat to it, and in the chaos you slip between them. When the smoke clears you stand at the center, towering over one of the few guardsmen who was stupid enough to bet on you against Darzi.

You think you've more or less made your point, so you're not going to mix words. “Consider yourself lucky that all I've done is embarrass you in front of your friends. I could have done much worse.”

You vanish as you first appeared, in a flash of smoke, and you're on the ground before any of them have a chance to muster a response. When one is able to control the vines which drape form the trees descending from on high becomes remarkably easy. You simply needed to wrap them around your arms and let them carry your weight down.

You reappear only once you've stepped back out onto the cobbles of the courtyard, smoke curling around your frame. You collect your cloak off the fountain's rim as you pass, whipping it around your back and attaching it at your shoulder with the engraved brooch which serves to bridge the distance between you and your companions. You cast one last look back at the guards as you enter the palace, and like roaches they scatter before you.

Profectus finds you the very moment you step through the door, Darzi following shortly after him. “Fucking Gods, Mik, those guys looked ready to piss themselves. What did you even say to them?”

You shrug your shoulders as the three of you fall into step, striding confidently through the halls. “For the record, one of them did. As for what I said, I really only bothered actually address the one I think yelled at me. I'm not entirely sure he was actually the one, but I feel pretty confident in my assumption. Otherwise I just ruined some poor bastards day for no real reason.” You're getting sidetracked, and seek to correct yourself. “Regardless, I told him that he ought to consider himself lucky.”

Darzi seems skeptical. “That's all? No doom and gloom, no promises to consume his soul and sleep with his wife? That seems remarkably restrained by your standards, Mikhael.”

Literally one hour.

She's right, actually. Personally you think your efforts more than sufficed to teach the desired lesson, but normally you probably would have employed greater theatrics. Pillars of fire raining from the heavens, or something of the like. “If you want me to be specific, I said he should consider himself lucky that I only embarrassed him rather than delivering some horrible punishment. Threatening to screw his wife would have just been crass, and that aside I don't even know if he's married.”

“No, Mikhael, you don't understand.” Profectus is quick to chime in. “If he's not married, that just makes the threat even more terrifying. It implies that you'll stalk him for the rest of his life. You'll watch his every waking moment, figuring out his weaknesses and insecurities. Then when he finally does get married, bam!” He slams his fist into his palm. “You fist his wife like an angry god.”

Darzi, for her part, at least seems to mock offense. You're just confused. “Is that what your gods do to their worshipers when they're angry?”

He scratches contemplatively at his chin, apparently thinking deeply about the issue. “Not usually, but there actually is a story about Niki, our God of Victory. They say he once pulled a man's stomach out through his ass and then cursed him to live eternally in that state, for fathering a child by his wife Ora. The god-child in question had to contend with all manner of challenges placed before him by a vengeful Niki, and eventually become known as one of our most beloved and famous heroes. Lysimachos.”

Elves are strange, and you're not going to bother putting in the effort to point out the innumerable problems with that myth. For one, their gods aren't actually gods. They're spirits, and spirits don't reproduce sexually. Which means marriage for them would be a rather pointless affair. Nor would they be capable of producing any sort of 'half-elven' child, though you suppose a Servant of a particularly powerful spirit would seem half a god.
(3/4)
>>
Your thoughts are interrupted by a tug upon your arm from Darzi, who pulls you towards what appears to be some manner of dining hall. Presently it's abandoned, the tables having been pushed to the back of the room and chairs stacked atop one another, but it will serve well enough as a private space in which to meditate as a group and there's plenty of space to move about.

We should arrange to fight the guards at some point, I really want to see if we can get some kind of group-telepathy/collective martial trance thing going, using nature magic as an aid, against a force that out numbers us.

yeah, but the first option in the second choice kinda implies we won't get preceptor bonus, but we might get some other bonus instead.

the first choice has an option to teach Prof the basics of Marsala in addition to martial trance, but it's unclear if beginner Marsala or advanced Rhynian is easier and how big the difference is.

might as well teach him beginner Marsala if the DC will be low anyway, because he's a shit fighter for a melee focus combatant.

would teaching Prof, Darzi and Chrys proper vatisdom be piss easy at this point?
>>
>>193793
Can we catch that now Soma after seeing prof slip up and teach them how to channel vys now?
>>
Channeling Vys is a lesson which shouldn't even take more than a couple hours of meditation, tops.
>>
>>193800
Learning to channel vys is the hardest part of pretty much every aspiring Vatis' education. Learning elements and the like itself is fairly simple, but virtually impossible to advance past a certain level without some knowledge of channeling.

That's why virtually everyone in the Shahdom has a very basic understanding of some magic, but only Vatis are able to develop it much further beyond that.
>>
>>193812
...unless you're Chryssa?
>>
>>193812

>>
>>193812

>>
>>193816

>>
>>193793
Will this teach Prof at least some basic nature magic?
>>
>>193816
R H Y N I A N S

She can actually channel vys to enhance her physicality, though enhancing more abstract things like the mind is more difficult for her. It would be fairly simple for Mikhael to help her work through that block, with his expanded understanding of how the mind works.

>>193818
>>193820
Mortia and Zahak can already channel. Mortia learned from Master Karim, and Zahak was inborn with the knowledge of how to do so.

Darzi and Profectus probably only require a session or two of meditation, or three at the absolute most, considering Mik's past efforts.
>>
>>193831

There is a difference between "not feeling joy outside of artificially induced joy" and "being incapable of feeling joy, forever and ever".

After getting thrown around the courtyard, you don't think you'll be participating in the sparring personally, but you can think of few other methods by which to teach someone how to enter a Martial Trance. Otherwise it's just a meditation upon forms, which you know Darzi at least is already quite familiar with. Profectus, on the other hand, has been trained in a form of combat that lacks a notion of ritualized movements, and thus does not lend itself well to the sort of automation necessary for meditation.

You briefly consider teaching Profectus the forms of Marsala Ve, but ultimately decide against it. For one, it would just seem wrong to teach him the martial tradition of your people. He's not one of you, and that aside he has his own tradition upon which to draw. You're actually curious to see whether or not he'll manage it considering the rather improvisational nature of Rhynian military training, but you have a vague sense that with proper guidance he shouldn't find it too difficult.

“Alright, so I've been giving this some thought and I think I've come up with an effective method by which to teach you this technique I've been experimenting with.” Perhaps experimenting is something of a lose term, you did it once almost by accident in that fight against the strange corpse beast you fought in the sewers below the transport array. “I call it a martial trance, and it essentially allows you to meditate in combat. Granted, both your magical might and combat prowess suffer in the process, but I've been thinking that perhaps with a proper understanding of Nature magic one might eliminate these drawbacks.”

Your friends listen aptly, Darzi perhaps more so than Profectus. “This method requires that you automate the process of combat, relying upon Nature magic to guide your blows and your expanded sense of the world to know when and where an opponent intends to strike. Darzi, you'll likely find all this familiar. It follows naturally from meditation upon forms. Profectus, does this sound like something you'd be capable of?”

He nods quickly, slabs of stone falling away from his arm and forming themselves rapidly into a shield. “Sure, when you're standing in a line with three thousand other men, practically shoulder to shoulder, it's really easy to fall into a sort of trance-like state. Just hacking away at whatever is in front of you. You'd be surprised how many battles I've been in, that I remember, but could barely describe the details of. After a point they all just sort of blur together and I don't think that's because I've been locked in a pod for a thousand years.”

(1/4)
>>
Good, that bodes well. Perhaps this will work out after all. Unfortunately, weapons are going to be an issue. Profectus, so far as you're aware, fights best with a sword and a shield. Without those two things, he's pretty useless. You and Darzi on the other hand are just as competent unarmed as you are with spears. Fortunately Profectus presents a solution as he draws forth the molten rock of which his stone arm is composed and begins to shape it. He slowly forms a sword for himself and a spear for Darzi.

The resultant blunted weapons are made of obsidian, their polished black surface gleaming dimly in the light which drifts through the slotted screen windows which cover the far wall. Darzi's spear is truly little more than a stave, while Profectus' blade lacks any sort of edge. You'd be worried about the weapons fracturing, but this will be light contact sparring. Not the sort you and Darzi were just engaged in.

You find an available space off to the side and fold your legs underneath yourself, each foot resting atop the opposite thigh with the soles facing upwards. Becoming limber enough to twist yourself into this position once required seemingly endless periods of stretching, but these days it's fairly simple for you to contort yourself into the proper position. “The intention is that the two of you will spar while I correct the flow of your vys and subtly suggest what you ought to focus on. Ideally you'll barely realize I'm tampering at all. The sparring will of course be very low intensity for now, since getting your teeth kicked in isn't exactly conductive to maintaining a trance.”

Your two pupils take up positions opposite one another, Darzi bowing low and Profectus slapping the flat of his obsidian sword against his stone shield. It doesn't produce any sort of news beyond a thud, you imagine it's more impressive with actual weapons, but the gesture gets his point across nonetheless. With these final signs of mutual respect combat is joined, and much as you expected Darzi is quick to pick up on the basics of the technique.

She moves slowly but fluidly, her eyes shut and her body relaxed. As she draws close to Profectus she lashes out with the spear, but considering he hasn't even made an attempt to enter his own trance blocking it proves a simple matter. He seems to just be watching Darzi, and so you close your eyes. You allow yourself to become aware of the vys coursing through you, of its origin in your chest, and of the avenues through which it radiates strength into your limbs.

This awareness expands outwards, growing to encompass nearly the dining hall and the palace beyond. Even the city stretching out beyond the palace gates becomes known to you, though it is little more than a smear of ambient vys at the edge of your consciousness. Your focus remains primarily upon the room you're in, and your two companions as they spar against one another.

(2/4)
>>
It is by the exercise of your will that vys flows from your reserves, the power it carries serving to reinforce the weight which your mind exerts upon reality. Profectus thoughts mingle with your own, as do Darzi's, but she's not your focus at the moment. She seems to have understood the technique almost innately. You don't do anything overt, you certainly don't try to actually communicate, but a little twisting and shifting creates the desired effect. Profetus' thoughts still, and the flow of his vys grows more constant and predictable.

Unfortunately you realize that Profectus lacks any understanding of Nature magic, a fact which poses you a significant obstacle to teaching him the technique. The stopgap measure you devise to resolve this issue entails acting as a sort of intermediary for Prof's senses. You use your own understanding of Nature magic to develop a picture of the world, and then via the brooches transmit these images to him directly. It's no substitute for actually teaching him Nature magic, but it will certainly suffice in this case.

It's this final measure which seems to strip away whatever barriers remained to his entering of a trance. Unfortunately there proves to be a slight delay between the images you're transmitting to Profectus and the reality he faces in his match against Darzi. Thus, while the two opponents start off fighting one another more or less smoothly, the engagement quickly falls apart. Profectus, acting on a several second delay, is thwacked lightly in the side of the head by Darzi's spear just as he was beginning to raise his shield to block. This sends him tumbling forward, and they both end up in a pained heap.

Overall you'd call it a success, but not entirely so. Something you noticed though is really starting to bother you. None of your companions make full use of their relatively large vys pools, at least large in comparison to most untrained Samjan. You know it's not exactly fair to channel vys in a sparring match, but this was primarily intended as a meditation rather than a spar. You much would have preferred Profectus 'cheating' if it meant being able to continue with your experiment.

As they're picking themselves up off the ground you rise easily to your feet, approaching them both. “You did surprisingly well, considering it was both your first time attempting a meditation like this. Profectus, I'm particularly impressed with what you managed to accomplish considering your utter lack of knowledge when it comes to Nature magic. That being said I wished to ask, why do neither of you channel vys?”

(3/4)
>>
Darzi props herself up on the tile, shrugging her shoulders. You get the impression she hadn't even considered it. “I've never really understood how vys can be used to enhance my thoughts and actions, to be honest. Magic, sure. All that makes sense, but why would vys serve to make me stronger or faster?”

Her question doesn't quite make sense to you, but you do your best to answer. “Vys serves to enhance mental faculty and physicality because it's Vys. This is one of the most basic tenets of magic. I'm honestly not quite sure what you're asking.”

“I'm asking how it works.” She states simply, a note of frustration to her tone. “What about vys is able to push someone beyond their natural limits?”

All these words make sense separately but the way she's putting them together is just nonsense. “It works because it's magic, what more do you want from me? I could demonstrate it in a thousand ways if you'd like, but I'd honestly never thought to question the mechanics of it. It's Vys, it's a bastardized form of divinity, it's able to alter the threads which compose the fabric of reality on a whim. Frankly it's mind boggling that one could accept being able to spew fire and close wounds but question channeling.”

Profectus interrupts just as Darzi is opening her mouth to retort. “I've just never really understood it, the whole channeling thing. Like, I try to move my vys around and it's not something I can really... well, sink my metaphorical teeth into I guess. I can't identify a point on my body were a tear away a piece of vys for whatever purpose I need.”

Are all apprentices this naive at first? “What do you mean you can't identify your vys pool? It's your vys pool! Same one you draw on to employ any sort of magic!”

You seem to have made a grave oversight.

your suggestion reads: channel vys into Mik's shard. we first did this to repel the crown spirits, then delved further into DE magic with soulfire. this had already happened before. your ingenious method was based on our previous soul-related exploits. total genius only made possible by a chatroom, of course. definitely could not have been devised in-thread, because reasons. the whole ascension bit that resulted was Soma. he's the guy who decides what happens after you state your actions in case you forgot. unless you're telling me you're coming up with the lore now, and you and your co-genius are the true masterminds behind BQ and Soma is just a puppet figure you use to run everything from behind the scenes?

I could tell you about the difference between internal and external channeling of Divine Energy, and how Core Reinforcement is Metal Magic that allows us to direct Divine Energy, but it's plainly evident it wouldn't pierce your thick skull, nor would you want it to. As most things have become, this is a matter of pride for you. We're not arguing that thread anons would have thought of the technique first, or about whether the IRC contributes more than it takes. We're talking about if you could stack up to me.

Do you know who you are? You are the "wannabe." The person who looks at other's achievements and thinks, "I could do that. That's not so hard. I am just as good or better than them." And you proclaim it loudly for the world to hear. And so wrapped up are you in your ego and your pride, you don't hear the laughter or the mockery.

You were not as good as I then. You did not come up with the technique, then. When the quest needed guidance most, you were not guiding it.

At the end of the day, I'm better than you. Everyone here is better than you. You know why? It's because we're questers, and you're not. We want Banished Quest to be better. You're here to make your sorry ego feel better, tearing down other's achievements and starting stupid petty drama for no reason whatsoever. And because of that, you'll never contribute anything meaningful, you will always be a parasite.

You are the prissy drama queen that stirs up shit for no other reason than to do so and thrives on little social debacles, contributing nothing to the community they belong to.
>>
>>194630
actually I just pointed out a fact already brought up many many times: the IRC is making Soma post half as often, maybe less. your precious little community is based around this quest, and it is also killing this quest. it is pretty much the definition of cancer.

so yeah, I feel zero guilt telling you take your enlightened society and shove it up your ass so we can actually have a quest to base a community around in the first place. because some people aren't here to discuss pizza toppings while everyone else waits around for nothing and by the end of thread there are only a handful of guys left.

kinda funny you accuse me of egotism while defending a completely selfish position. especially since I'm one of the many people thus who pointed out how much the IRC is harming the quest.

The boss is his own man, and if you get over your clearly evident massive inferiority complex, you can take it up with him if you'd like. Sleep appears to affect the soul in novel ways. Vys restoration that cannot be explained by ambient Vys absorption, as evident from our time in SK and Mortia's world; sleeping appeared to restored Vys at a rate unaffected by the low ambient Vys there. This makes sense, since sleeping seems to restore Husk very efficiently, and Vys is a byproduct of Husk.

We could watch people sleep while meditating deeply. Or, possibly, we could use the Shaping Arts to review our soul's memory of sleep. Iffy on that, it depends on the Mind working in a few ways, and we still have questions there. We'd at least get some more data to narrow down how the Mind works, at least.

This is fine, you can correct this. You were an apprentice not so long ago, and you can sympathize to an extent with their confusion. Besides, you taught Chryssa how to channel. Well, for the most part. You think she might still struggle with the mental aspects of channeling vys, which to be fair also gave you quite a lot of trouble when you were just starting out. That feels like practically an age ago. You had yet to achieve your Grandmaster's robes, and hadn't even met Darzi. Strange to think how drastically your situation has changed since then.

“Alright, before we go any further it's clear that I've been negligent in regards to your training.” Master Karim would no doubt cuff your ear if he knew you'd taught them to cast before you taught them to channel. He always was a firm believer in there being a proper order to these things. “Don't question how it works, and don't worry about the specifics of 'where' in your body vys is stored. All I want you to do is meditate on moving your vys through your body. Channel it as though you're preparing a spell, but never actually release it. This is channeling in its most basic form, and it should come relatively simply for both of you.”

With minimal grumbling Darzi and Profectus assume meditative poses on the marble floor. You channel Nature magic, and the walls begin to melt away. You stand upon a black plane surrounded and apart of the ebb and flow of vys through the universe. Your companions appear as bright points in a sea of light, and to a lesser degree so do the servants who move through the labyrinthine halls of the palace.

You filter out any distraction and focus upon your friends. Somewhat predictably, the majority of Profectus' vys lies within that arm of his. This is unusual, and under normal circumstances would be cause for concern. However, these are not normal circumstances. He manages this most basic form of channeling with the ease which you expected, the concentration of his reserves drifting slowly into his chest and then his head, before suffusing his body as a whole.

Much to your relief, Darzi meets with similar success. Her reserves are far more normal than Profectus', the largest concentration of her vys residing in her chest. Light shoots through her shoulder and down her arm, spreading out into her fingers before slowly beginning to withdraw. Another bolt fans out through her legs a moment later, and you're more or less satisfied that she's understood the principles behind channeling vys.

(1/2)
>>
Now comes the hard part. You were never actually given a good explanation regarding how channeling vys into an action works. It was just something you learned to do, through trial and error. When you faced difficulty channeling vys into more cerebral, less concrete actions your Master just dropped you off in the East Slums in his finest robes carrying a pouch full of gold. You were forced to figure it out, because otherwise you would've found yourself stabbed in an alleyway by some starving bum.

Don't forget to put on modifiers of what each martial arts does.
>>
Maneuvers:
Piercing Thrust - By targeting the joints in an opponents armor, Mikhael is able to ignore half (rounded down) of an opponent's soak bonus (So if successful, treat the DC as if it were lower by half the soak bonus). May only be used with a spear or blade. May be used at close or medium range. Does additional damage to constructs.

Leg Sweep - Using the haft of his spear or his own legs, Mikhael may trip an opponent. While on the ground attacks against the target receive bonuses and the target is only able to take certain actions. May be used at medium or close range.

Feint - Feign an attack without actually committing in order to force the target into a misstep. If successful, make another attack against the target which receives bonuses. May be used at close or medium range.

Force Back - Mikhael rains a flurry of blows down upon an opponent, forcing them back. If successful the target moves one range category further away, e.g. from close to medium range, or from medium to distant range.

Receive Charge - When wielding a spear, Mikhael may brace to receive an opponents charge. If successful the opponent will take damage and their charge will fail. Chance to impale opponent, removing them from combat.

Disarming Strike: Whilst wielding a weapon, Mikhael may disarm an opponent by targeting either their wrist or knocking their weapon from their hands. Applies a -4 modifier to the attack roll. May end combat. Must be used at close range. Some enemies are resistant to this maneuver.

Debilitating Strike: Using either a blunt instrument or his fist, Mikhael strikes an opponent in their solar plexus and knocks the wind out of them. Certain opponents are immune to this maneuver. While debilitated, the opponent receives a -4 malus to their attacks.

I completely forgot we can do this.

Way of Metal: Trainee Rank (+1 to Unarmed and Blocking) (0/1 Insights)
A form of combat which the figures fighting in the Metal Codex seemed to employ. It focuses upon unrelenting and constant attack, using every part of the body and all tools at one's disposal. It's presently unclear what else this martial style values, but an educated guess would suggest Daggers and Short Swords are likewise emphasized. Its actual name is currently unknown.
Way of Metal:
Flurry of Blows - Mikhael may launch a series of attacks against his opponent which forces them onto the defensive, stunning them for one round of combat and providing a +2 to any attack against them.

Iron Body - Through relentless conditioning and the use of Metal Magic, one may render a shield redundant. Mikhael can block blows from weapons with any part of his body.

Nah, there were three paragraphs on fighting at various points in the Metal Codex:

>A creature of shadow charges from behind him, and his arm forms into a long silver blade. With a sweep of its arm, the shadow is cut down. More come at him, and over the course of several minutes it dances across thin air, slicing this way and that with metallic blades formed, as far as you can tell, from its very flesh. When it comes to stand once more at its origin point, it sits down and the blades vanish.

>Turning the page again you find it filled with men in women contorted into various impossible poses, the dull grey of iron filling in an increasing proportion of their body. One man appears to be standing on one hand, his legs held up straight as an arrow. A woman has managed to twist both of her legs behind and over her shoulders and proceeds to stand on her two feet. It hurts just to look at it.

>As you continue reading, you find what appears to be a manual of arms. A man sits at the top of the left page, but instead of hands his arms end in long, sharp blades. He goes from one form to the next, slashing at invisible figures. Some of the forms remind you of Marsala Ve, where as others remind you more of the sort of thing you'd see in a boxing gymnasium; upper cuts and quick jabs.
>>

>>
Remember when BQ had lots of shitposting? Seems like it's been pretty much shitpost-free for a while now.
>>
>>197395
The answer is that the vast majority of martial styles which were originally widespread throughout the Hiacian Empire have been forgotten over the years either as the cults to certain gods died out, their techniques were absorbed by Marsala Ve, or

>>197408
Anon, in 3000 BC the Middle East was pretty much the only part of the world inhabited by civilized peoples. Sumer and Akkad collapsed into warring city-states, until they were united by Sargon the Great. Old Kingdom Egypt had only just started building pyramids and by and large they were stepped stone structures. At the end of the millennia, nomads swept in and destroyed civilization. I can't remember if it was the first or second time they'd done so.

But anyway, ancient Sumerians boxed, according to reliefs we've uncovered in southern Iraq/eastern Saudi Arabia.

You may be legitimately asking, but that doesn't mean that the question is a legitimate one.
>>
>>197547
Or maybe it requires something more powerful like husk.
>>
>>197544
In that case, Mikhael would guess that Nature+Time would likely do one of three things, based upon his current understanding of Nature.
>Make him hyper aware of each and every passing moment, creating the illusion that time has slowed down even though it continues to flow at the same rate.
>Allow him to more fully and completely understand the Nature of time and why it passes through the mortal realm, which would likely entail becoming aware of the rotation of the 216 layers of reality.
>Rapidly drain his vys reserves since the spell would require such immense amounts of power that no mortal could ever hope to cast it.

It's kinda strange to think that this quest has been going on for... what, a year? Two now?

I'm finally, actually making progress on the post. Feels good desu. Should be done soon.

Y'know, I don't think people would mind shorter posts if they get more updates. What do you think Soma?

I don't know, I tend to just write until I feel like the post is 'done', and then I post it. I don't give much thought to whether or not it's too long, or too short, or what have you.

This post, for instance, is a full page plus a paragraph or so extra. It'll probably end up being two full pages or so, by my rough estimate. That's a three or four part post.

I lost track of the quest for a bit around thread 5 and thought it'd died for some reason.

It was pretty weird to come back during the visit to Anthus to find that not only was the quest still going, but the playerbase had multiplied in size.

Yeah, I certainly hope to. It's on hold until the end of BQ. I'd previously had a couple chapters written, but I've since gone back and rethought certain aspects of who the protagonist ought to be and how the plot out to play out.

I was considering for a while making the MC a human from Keisland. He would have been the son of a noble who was assigned to command his father's men on the field. His position was overwhelmed by Voibardians, and he lost his arm to an attacker's axe. He's saved by a wandering band of elves, who had been busy stealing the armor off his corpse when they realized he was still alive and instead dragged him to their shaman, who healed him well enough that he survived, but wasn't skilled enough to regrow his arm.

Now I'm thinking I might instead make it about a guy from the area around Rhynia proper. That area is rife with magical anomalies, having been torn apart by whatever event caused the Rhynian Empire's collapse. Great rifts run through the Earth, from which the occasional army of experimental abominations spills forth. Tried of living the life of a starving peasant in a village ravaged by war, he delves a ruin on the recommendation of a friend and finds a parasitic artifact which latches itself to him. He gains immense power (relative to most folks) but is slowly being consumed by the artifact in question.

Why don't you take your original idea and publish it as a short periodic web-novel in order to practice a more traditional approach to story-telling, different from the quest format. I'd be interested to see what you do without player interaction. You could work on it when you don't feel like doing quest stuff and just release a short chapter every week. You'd be able to produce far more than you do the quest because you don't need input or feedback. It would also quell the unrest of the masses on those weeks when you can't run BQ.

So wait, if someone were to compile BQ into a novel, since you don't seem interested in doing so, would you be cool with that?

I enjoy writing as a hobby, and aside from the fact that BQ is one of the best written bits of fantasy literature ,novel or otherwise, that I've seen and deserves novelization, it'd just be real fuckin' good practice.

You think you might have an idea which ought to serve well as an example of just why it's important that Darzi and Profectus learn to channel. You might have gotten thrown about the courtyard like a ragdoll by Darzi, but that was without any use of magic on your part. You're confident that if you'd felt like cheating you could have beaten her just as badly as she beat you, if not worse. Plus with your Grandmastery of Metal magic, you ought to be able to make yourself essentially immune to an attack from any mundane weapon.

However, you can't help but wonder if Marsala Ve truly makes full use of the capabilities of Metal magic. Certainly, with the proper level of skill, it serves as the perfect complement to Fire magic. However, its focus is entirely upon keeping enemies at bay until delivering a few devastating strikes, and upon ending a conflict quickly and brutally. Metal magic, to you, would seem best suited for a form of combat which either focuses entirely upon defense, or forgoes any notion of defense and focuses upon unrelenting assault.

Then you remember that the Metal Codex frequently, or if not frequently then at several points throughout the book, depicted metallic figures engaged in combat with shadowy, formless entities. You also seem to recall a portion of the book solely dedicated to describing the martial forms used in the book, and ways in which one might condition their body and train the forms described.

You've since given the Metal Codex to Darzi for her own studies, but thanks to your understanding of the Shaping Arts you don't really need the book itself. You need only obey your instinct, drawing vys inward and watching the past unfold before your eyes. You are not standing in the abandoned dining hall with two of your closest friends and companions. You are sitting alone in your room at the Temple of Pani, watching as a fight plays out in the air just in front of you between figures cast in metal.

A creature of shadow charges at the 'protagonist', if you will. In response his arm forms into a long silver blade. With a single sweeping gesture, the shadow is cut down. More come at him, and over the course of several minutes he dances across the space before you, slicing this way and that with metallic blades formed, as far as you can tell, from his own flesh. Now that you're able to observe the figure more closely, focusing not upon the actions themselves but the motions with which he performs them, you find there's a wealth of information being transmitted that originally you failed to grasp.

(1/3)
>>
>>198285
The world building is 10/10 but the main characters are shit.
>>
The central figure of this little ballet never stops moving. He is in constant, continuous motion and he attacks with every part of his body, not just the blades which sit at the ends of his arms. In one moment he's spinning through the air, his foot knocking the sense from one shadowy monstrosity while the blades lash out and kill another. The moment he lands he goes on the attack, driving a blade through one opponent while his elbow strikes the throat of a second. It seems as though he could go on for an eternity, never ceasing in his efforts to destroy the enemy.

His form is light and springy. He stands always upon the balls of his feet, moving through what you can only assume are highly ritualized forms in every attack. It's not quite the same as Marsala Ve, which encourages the practitioner to improvise whenever possible. To combine, alter, and create forms as is necessary. Everything the silver fighter does seems practiced and precise, not a single errant gesture out of place.

When the protagonist comes to stand once more at his origin point, having vanquished his enemies, he sits down and the blades vanish. You wonder whether those blades are actual physical extensions of the fighter, a stand-in for whatever weapons he would actually wield, or just a metaphor for something else, like his hands, intended to illustrate that through the techniques shown one might turn their fingers to blades.

Your surroundings blur together, and suddenly you're no longer sitting within your room at the temple. You're turning the page to find the next filled with men in women contorted into various impossible poses, the dull grey of iron filling in an ever greater proportion of their body. Unlike the first encounter you had with this martial tradition, the figures on this page are illustrated rather than made animate by some trick of enchanting. One man appears to be standing on one hand, his legs held up straight as an arrow. Another figure, a woman, has managed to twist both of her legs behind and over her shoulders and proceeds to stand on her two feet. It hurts just to imagine performing such a feat of flexibility.

You realize that in many ways this page is intended to illustrate how one ought to go about conditioning their body for the rigors of the techniques themselves. You see men getting smashed across the abdomen with lengths of wood, and women slamming their heads into stone blocks. One man smashes his elbow into an iron column while another is busy punching away at that same column. Yet another has covered his arms in weighted iron rings and is going through a series of motions you're unfamiliar with. To you it seems like needless self-torture, but perhaps exposing self-torture is itself beneficial. Perhaps it hardens you to the tortures others might inflict upon you.

(2/3)
>>
As you continue reading, you find what appears to be a manual of arms. A man sits at the top of the left page, but instead of hands his arms end in long, sharp blades. Again you're forced to wonder if this is meant to literally represent turning one's arms into knives or if it's some form of metaphor. He goes from one form to the next, slashing at invisible figures. Some of the forms remind you of Marsala Ve, but others seem to take cues from Rhynian traditions of combat. He swings grand punches, employing his whole body to leverage force into the motion, and cuts upwards with his fist. A particularly brutal move considering it would entail driving a spike through someone's jaw.

Counting each image as a separate form would mean that there are eighty in all, meaning that at least in theory it should be easier to learn than Marsala Ve with its ninety three forms. However, the conditioning exercises seem far more extensive than those for Marsala Ve. Where as simply going through each form would be sufficient in the style you're most familiar with, this style seems to truly emphasize strength and endurance training. In a way you're glad, maybe you'll finally be able to add some definition and tone to your body due to actually growing stronger, rather than just because you've lost weight.

When finally the vision ends, you truly feel you've gained something from the experience. A greater understanding of an ancient martial tradition certainly, and one that you think you might be able to use in some practical application. Granted you don't feel as if you've gained any particular proficiency in the art, to do so would require you actually put into practice the techniques illustrated, but you think that some of the ideas at least might be incorporated into your own martial techniques.

You stand exactly where you had prior to channeling your vys inwards, just before the seated forms of Profectus and Darzi. They remain locked within their meditative trances, though you could awaken them with a thought if you wished to do so. You're still not entirely decided regarding how exactly you intend to spar them.

I wouldn't say shit per se. Certain amounts of character development aside from Mik's has been largely put on the back burner in favor of lore and plot. It makes a certain amount of sense given the quests first person perspective, so certain forms and amounts of secondary-main character exposition wouldn't work story wise, and the rest wouldn't work very well quest wise in terms of actual plot progression. So, given it's in the form it's in I'd still say it's top notch given the actual constraints of the genre and format.

BQ has only one main character. Everyone else in the party are side characters we only interact with occasionally for flavor.

>>198318
Well, by compile BQ into a novel, I mean take a raw text dump of BQ, and slowly edit it around into the format of a novel. Editing and format adaption, pretty much.

I'd want Soma's input into it, obviously, it's his quest, and he'd know best the spirit and written word of the piece, and when all would be said and done, given I actually take up doing it, it'd be his name on the title page, not mine. As for why I would want to compile it, well. When I was younger I got real fucking hooked on the Shannara series, I think I read from Sword of Shannara to Talismans of Shannara in maybe a month altogether and awaited the release of the rest, and to this day I personally find them to be some of the best fantasy novels I've ever read. BQ, in both setting, lore, and plot I find to be more or less on par with the entire experience of discovering and reading those books, and I'd really like to see it put up in the form of a novel, because I just really feel like it'd be fantastic.

Your mind expands, intertwining itself with Darzi and Profectus' own. Their thoughts mingle with yours in a manner most normal men and women could not begin to imagine, but for you it is routine. Darzi worries that she's going to disappoint you, and thus strives to figure out how she might go about channeling properly without your instruction. Her efforts are futile, because she does not focus. Her thoughts are a chaotic slurry, far from the confident front she presents to others.

Profectus on the other hand is too relaxed. He thinks of little, if anything, whilst meditating. In a way this is good, he solely follows his instincts in moving the greatest concentration of his vys through his body. However, his instincts have not been honed like yours have. Thus, he does not accomplish anything of note. In some ways you feel sorry for Profectus. He possesses immense potential, but has never been able to live up to his own expectations of himself. That's the impression you get, at least.

It's strange how overwhelmingly calm you suddenly feel. As though all the pieces have fallen into place, and the world turns exactly as it ought to.

{Wake up. I've a challenge for you.}

Your voice rings through their thoughts, stirring them from their meditation. Their eyes snap open in the same instant, their focus falling upon you. Darzi seems irritated, and gives voice to what annoys her. “Damn it, Mikhael! I felt as if on the cusp of a breakthrough!”

“You weren't.” It's a simple statement, and a truthful one. “Your thoughts are too unfocused. They flit from one topic to the next without ever really stopping on any one idea long enough to consider it in full. It's fine, you were nervous. That's perfectly understandable. However, channeling vys requires that one focus entirely upon a single task. It comes naturally as you grow more proficient, but I can assure you that whatever avenue you were pursuing did not lead to any sort of breakthrough.”

Your focus shifts, as you begin to address them both. “If either one of you can make me bleed, I'll do whatever you ask for the rest of the day. No matter how degrading or uncomfortable. However, this will be no normal sparring match. Any and all forms of magic will be allowed, and all techniques no matter how destructive will be permitted. It will be the two of you against only myself, and the fight will continue until either both of you have surrendered or until one of you have managed to spill my blood.”

Darzi quirks an eyebrow, adopting a tone of false innocence. “Anything we ask, anything at all? What do you get if you do manage to win?”

(1/5)
>>
You shrug your shoulders. “The reverse will be true. For the rest of the day, you'll do what I ask. Whatever that may be. Let it be known that I still don't feel like I've fully recovered from my battle with the spirit invading Mahana's realm, I've less than half the power I usually wield at my disposal.”
>Vys Pool: (30/[30])

Profecuts rises to his feet, bits of obsidian flaking off the edge of his blade as it begins to sharpen itself. “Alright, I'll accept those terms. It'll be fun to watch you introduce yourself as Mikhael the Ball Gargler for the rest of the day.”

Darzi likewise stands using her spear to help leverage herself upwards. She runs her thumb across the edge of her spear tip and only upon confirming it draws blood at even the slightest touch does she nod her head, the wound closing in an instant. “Very well, I'll likewise accept the wager.”

You're going to enjoy this, probably a bit more than you should.

Profectus opens with a bolt of fire, weaker than the sort he'd usually throw, and unlike the last time the two of you dueled stopping it in midair is a simple matter. You extinguish the bolt with a gesture, in the same instant that Darzi strikes outward with her spear. Channeling vys to enhance your reflexes, and Metal to reinforce the skin of your palm, you simply thrust out your left hand. Her spear strikes you and the head shatters.

She pries a dagger from a sheath hidden within the confines of her loose pants, but just as she's beginning to swing at you a burst of water appears from nowhere, bowling her over with the force of its rampage. Profectus tries to capitalize on your distraction by calling forth the stone beneath you. It rises towards your crotch, a remarkably cheap move, but you halt it with some minor exertion of your will and turn it right back against him. The block of stone turns into a spear which you send hurtling towards him, he raises his shield to block it just in time, but it still nearly dislocates his shoulder with its impact alone. You follow it up immediately by peppering him with thin slivers of ice which stab him in a thousand different places, leaving him a writhing mess upon the floor.

Darzi has risen to her feet, and once again makes her attack. As she draws close you drop into a stance, and channeling vys into the corded muscle which runs down your legs hop gently into the air. A twist of your hips brings your back foot forward, slamming into the side of Darzi's head. She's sent sprawling, the dagger slipping from her grip. It was a move you probably couldn't have pulled off without falling flat on your ass afterwards under normal circumstances, but thanks to your previous exertion of will you're able to stick the landing.

>>
Profectus is rapidly recovering from the wounds which cover him, thanks in large part you imagine to that pendant he had embedded in his chest. You seek to incapacitate Darzi now, while she's still dazed, since you view her as far more of a threat than Profectus could ever hope to be. As you draw close her thoughts clue you in to a plan she's formulating, and so when she suddenly twist onto her feet in a single, fluid motion you're not caught off-guard. You catch the leg swinging towards you in mid-air, thanks to your magically enhanced strength.

A punch to the abdomen knocks the wind out of her, and before she can even attempt to counter you've sent her spinning through the air. The power is intoxicating, but you remind yourself that these are your friends. Really you're doing this for them, and so as you mount a prone Darzi and begin raining blows down upon her you're careful to moderate the force with which you strike. She tries to guard against your blows, but if ever she tries to protect her face you simply strike the body, and if she guards the body you strike the face.

You can feel the fury she feels in this moment. The sense of powerlessness more than anything else enrages her. Then it happens. She channels Vys into a single, powerful blow which connects with your jaw. It's enough to send spots of errant light dancing in your vision, and she takes full advantage of your momentary weakness. A second blow sends you sprawling across the floor next to her, if only due to the force behind it. Thanks to Metal magic, it doesn't actually hurt.

She slips your grip and rushes for her dagger, but before you're able to pursue her Profectus is upon you. This time he's not holding back with that arm of his. A beam of light as thick around as your head cuts through the air, the heat blistering before it even manages to reach you. It requires immense concentration on your part just to prevent the blast from cutting a hole through your chest, but you can't divert the spell either. Doing so would surely ruin this entire wing of the palace.

So you do what you think is best, and summon forth a block of stone to trip him up. He falls head first onto the marble floors, blood spurting from what is likely a broken nose. A voice in the back of your head tells you to protect your face, and the very moment you do so Darzi's blade scrapes against the reinforced flesh of your forearm. Were it not for your understanding of Nature magic, she would probably have won the bet there and then.

You counter by coiling every muscle in your body tightly, and then releasing that energy all in a single motion. Your palm strikes her chest and you feel bones shatter. She's left gasping on the floor several feet away, but her Water magic serves to ameliorate the damage you've caused. Already her ribcage is knitting itself back together, but for now you've left her temporarily incapacitated.

Why don't you do both? Change perspectives between both protagonists so you can introduce more of your world to the general audience. Basically I just want more of your magical realm.
>>
So your thoughts turn fully to Profectus, who's once again preparing to go on the attack. This time he's forgone the use of his volcanic arm in favor of closing to melee range, a thrust from his obsidian gladius threatening to impale you through the gut. You don't seek to avoid the blow, but rather spread your arms wide and welcome his attack. Against your hardened flesh, the blade shatters. The shock is evident upon his face, until your forehead connects with his broken nose. The pain is no doubt immense, and your friend promptly collapses to the floor.

You think a different tact is necessary to draw from Profectus the desired result, so while he writhes across the tile you begin to circle around him, your voice growing harsh and your tone derisive. “Just give up, Profectus. Gods know you'll never amount to anything. Why did you even think to accept this little wager of ours? Do you like embarrassing yourself? Does it get you off?”

The kick catches you off guard, but it's sloppy at best. “Fuck you, Mik! Do you really have to rub salt in the wound?” His protest echoes in the grand dining hall, mixed with Darzi's pained groans.

“What are you going to do? Cry about it to that whore you've dragged back to my estate?” You feel horrible about it the very moment you say it, but you have to inspire in Profectus the same sort of rage which you inspired in Darzi. “Do you really think she wants to be with you? She denied you once, and it was only after you crawled back to her begging that she agreed. You're going to remain a whoring drunk anyway, so why put her through all this?”

A hand grabs you by the ankle and pulls you off your feet. Then Profectus is on top of you, and his stone fist strikes your cheek with all the force he can muster. It actually hurts, but isn't enough to draw blood. Thus the fight continues. You punch him in the throat, and immediately follow it with an elbow to his broken nose. He tries to cry out but since he can't breath his efforts prove useless. You're quick to turn the tables, grabbing him by the mop of brown hair atop his head and dragging him forward. Your arm wraps around his neck and you squeeze.

He struggles in futility against your grip, until he doesn't. A fist strikes your kidneys and the immense pain is enough to force your grip to loosen. He's free in an instant, and power courses through his limbs. At long lost he's figured it out, just as Darzi had. Perhaps this method is a little more violent than the method you used with Chryssa, but it certainly gets results. Now you just have to finish this.

(4/5)
>>
A block of ice smashes Profectus in the back of the head, shattering in the process. He's sent sprawling forward apparently unconscious, and with him taken care of you turn your attention fully to Darzi. She has yet to fully recover from your previous blow, so you merely rise to your feet and stalk across the intervening distance between you and her.

You stomp your foot into her chest, refracturing whatever bones she'd managed to heal. “Come on, let's call an end to this. It's getting a little bit excessive.”

She nods since she's unable to actually speak, and you heal her shattered ribs with a gesture. Profectus' concussion is similarly repaired, and as you help Darzi to her feet your elven companion slowly begins to stir. You feel some measure of disgust for yourself, but the knowledge that it was for their own good does comfort you to some degree.

As Darzi broods against the wall, you walk over to Profectus and gently shake him awake. Your urging is all that's required to bring him to his feet, and though he initially seems ready to continue the fight, whatever notion he had of continuing is forgotten when he realizes that Darzi has surrendered.

Darzi and Prof will likely be able to get a lot more done now that they can actually channel vys into their rolls, so negative mods aren't as big a deal. They are getting negative mods, due to the fact that they're beginning to hit the 'wall' as it were, but they should be able to safely advance quite a number of levels further before really being unable to realistically advance.

And there you have it, from the boss himself. Let's keep in mind that Prof and Darzi aren't on the brink of anything, and that mechanically, elemental leveling doesn't come into it's own until your reach GM. Mik can do things as a GM that as a plain master, would have taken a meditation and a significant investment of Vys. It's best for them to gain levels in elements that they can use to improve their baseline abilities immediately. Mastery at fire would also pale in comparison to a Suryan Firebrand in pure destructive power.

Lastly, The Serpent and Staff will boost both Darzi's water magic ability and her combat ability, as you can see anatomical knowledge boosting our melee bonuses everytime we engage in cQC.

You clap Profectus affectionately on the shoulder, addressing both him and Darzi. “You both performed excellently, I could not be prouder of you.”

“You handed us our asses on a silver platter.” Darzi retorts, her mood clearly soured. “What is there to be proud of? That fight was so one sided you may as well have been facing children. We never stood a chance.”

You shrug your shoulders as she advances across the hall, joining you and Profectus. “True, I can't deny that my victory was assured from the start. However, think about what was gained from this experience. I gained little, except perhaps bragging rights. You two, on the other hand, finally figured out how to channel vys. A far more practical achievement all things considered.”

Profectus butts in before Darzi has a chance to respond. “Did you really have to be so harsh, though. I'll be the first to admit your words stung, Mik.”

“I did what needed to be done, Profectus. I'm sorry it had to happen, but I didn't see any other way to inspire in you the necessary rage. You see, if there's one thing I learned from my own Master it's that necessity is the mother of ingenuity. I knew that if I put you into a position where you thought you had no other option you'd either meekly surrender or you'd figure out exactly how useful channeling vys into an action can be. Was I wrong?”

Your question is greeted by a chorus of reluctant acknowledgment, but this isn't enough. “Look, I'm sorry I was harsh but it was entirely necessary. My Master taught me to channel vys by dressing me, a twelve year old boy, in his finest robes and dropping me off in the East Slums with an enormous pouch of gold. He told me to walk back to his home, by myself, through streets I had never been. You can imagine how terrified I was, and I very nearly got stabbed for the trouble. I figured it out, and I'm grateful for the experience. When you've been pinned down by some ungodly abomination in the jungles of Elaudia and only manage to save yourself thanks to the lessons I've taught you, I'm sure that you too will thank me.”

It's finally this which shatters the air of resentment which hung in the room. “I suppose you're right.” Darzi admits. “I'm sorry if I seem childish, I know you accepted defeat with far more grace than I am now. I just hate to feel powerless. It brings up unfortunate memories.”

Profectus likewise chimes in. “Yeah, I recognize the utility of it, but it's still not pleasant to experience to have gone through.” He runs a finger along the stone surface of his arm. “Next time we spar like this, Mik, you're not going to have so easy a time of it. I'll make sure of that.”

If nothing else you admire his ambition, but based upon Prof's past behavior you doubt anything much will come of his promise. Your thoughts turn to what you ought to demand of the two of them, since they've agreed to put themselves entirely at your disposal. You could always force Profectus to embarrass himself in some manner. As for Darzi, you've frankly been feeling a little pent up. You could force her to relieve you of your urges. However, you can't help but feel that you ought to use this opportunity to force them into improving their understanding of magic.

I consider gate meditation very advanced for a gm meditation, and considering he'd have very little help in the attempt there, it would almost certainly kill or maim him in some way to attempt it, not to mention any soul parasites he could pick up.

We'd need to at the very least give him a good grasp of metal magic before he attempts such a thing to protect his soul, and get his vys pool over 50, perferably over 60 if possible.

>implying that would be enough
You need Mik level skill and talent to survive passing through the gate and even then you're not guaranteed to get the best part of the meditation: the bonus trait.
>>
>>200820
Nah you misunderstand me, that's BARE MINIMUM for just entering the gate and meditating there.

Passing through it would be suicidal for someone who not at least a deul or tri level gm. I don't believe Prof will ever reach that level of skill without extream cheating.

Personally I want to redo the Water GM insight and aim for a DE focused meditation + bonus trait.
>>
>>200897
It's a cool idea, but is that even possible? Has soma confirmed we can unlearn gm meditations like that?
>>
Well Soma got banned it seems.
>>
>>200936
eh it's cool it was before his next BQ run time anyway, so we'll seem him next wednesday for that as planned. (Implying he won't call off last min for stupid shit.)

No idea why he'd get randomly banned for just talking about qst though?
>>
>>200917
He said in theory it would require memory removal. As for whether it was possible who knows~? Mahana probably would though.
>>
>>200961
Well, as we advance in shaping, I imaging we can seporate from or just erace insights in our magic from memory
>>
>>200979
We should also think about getting some books from our house. Soma implied we had some pretty good ones.
>>
>>201082
I feel you anon,I was think about earlier how we haven't really gone through our houses library, but we have suck a huge slog of back logged stuff to read right now I just don't think that'll be in the cards until we're back from Eludia.

Maybe not even then depending on how much we dedicate to reading from now till then. Taking anything our of the library right now would just be adding to the mountain.

Not even for our allies? There are manuals for Rhynian martial arts and books for Earth who knows what other stuff may be in there. By the way I wonder if it would be possible to make an artifact that passively reads a book to our mind since the problem is we rarely can just sit down and read.
>>
>>201176
Rhynian tactics would be useful if we ever started a mercenary company or was given command of body of troops instead of the small unit of vagabonds and grave robbers we currently have following us around.
>>
>>200979
Then we'd be able to copy insights from others' minds and implant them into ours!
>>
>>204239
you think too little, what about haveing our apprentices experience our whole life and giveing them our whole magic school as knowledge?
>>
>>204303
Nah. Just make several hundred Miks and we can just take over the world.
>>
>>204319
your an anon after my own heart.

Insight's granted by shaping arts do not increase the vys pool and GM bonuses probably won't transfer over.
>>
>>204364
prove it fag
>>
>>204792
Are you new? Soma has told us repeatedly in and out of quest that shit does not work that way. Hell a few threads ago Soma that an artifact that instantly beams a book's information into head would not increase our vys pool and Soma being a jew would jew us out of GM bonuses by saying that the only way to get GM bonuses is to do it yourself. Power does not come easily or cheaply in Banished Quest.
>>
>>205090
Interesting we got the Vys pool increases from elemental learning transferred by that Rhynian officer training device.

Fucking Rhynians, man.
