You are a supreme being on a young and fresh world. You are undetectable, yet you possess a specific set of powers: You can add mutations to the creatures that inhabit it.

The world itself is a simple one, a rock globe covered in a shallow see, with the deepest point being twenty meters (60ft) under water, and the shallowest half a meter (1-2 ft). Several creatures inhabit this world, yet you will only change these four, and their offspring. Will you make them thrive? Or will you make them shrivel? It is all up to you, and your friends.

Welcome to the Shallow Waters Evo game!
Rules/How to play:
>Take the art of a creature already existing, be it a basic one, or one already modified by another user. How many times it has been modified already does not matter, but make sure you are not the last person who modified it.
>Open MS Paint, or any other drawing program
>Add a small, semi-realistic mutation to the creature. That means, a thicker shell, spikes, functionless and small appendages, etc.
>Post it in the thread, with a small description of what changes you made.
>To work to something greater, like functional wings, multiple steps need to be made (eg. Minor appendage -> Big appendage -> Feathers for gliding -> Functioning wing)
>Once every while, an extinction event will take place. Any affected creature that does not adapt before it takes place, will go extinct. Extinct creatures can no longer evolve.

DO's and DON'T's
>Do participate, no matter how bad your art is. Most people are shit at MS Paint here, so never be ashamed
>Do completely change the art of a creature, if you're okay/good at art and stuff, and if you feel a creature needs it, because it's getting too full or something.
>Do work on other branches, and the creatures of others
>Do be a nice guy

>Don't complain when your OC Waifu and its entire branch goes extinct
>Don't add mutations that are too complex (eg. fully functioning eyes, incredible wings etc). Realism of the mutations themselves doesn't really matter, as long as it can be semi-scientifically explained, and again, are not too complex at once. (DO : Fire breathing because gas from the creature's gas bags are released and ignited by a small spark in the creature's throat. DONT : This creature conjures fire when breathing)
>Don't add a mutation to a creature whose last addition was also by you. This can be forgiven when no one within ~2-3 hours / 50 posts has mutated them, or they are about to go extinct.
>Don't devolve mutations made to your own creature because you dislike them or have other plans with the creature.

I will make a regularly updated evolution tree, in which all mutations/species are listed, and if they're extinct or not.
Posting separate art of the organisms for editing after this post.

Some murks began standing on 4 of their feet in an attempt to reach and pluck the juicy bits of tall plant life. Generations of exploiting this untapped niche have created the murktaurs. Their front legs degraded since they don't use them for walking as much as before and their mid and hind legs strengthened to support the new posture.

This is Musiyuk, which came from the branch of immune Murk that decide to became the laziest scavenger ever during the mass death of their environtment. This immunity coatails and also spreads to its digestion system, giving them the ability to stomach some of the foul meat.

Musiyuk had two set of teeth, a weak one by the lips, and the second one by its usual place. This adaptation is thought to came from the times when food were most of the times poisoned, and lips of Murk had tobecome tougher as well to help swallow the rotten meat. This eventually resulted in thicker and semiplated lips, forming their 'teeth'

oh yeah, they ate so much, their armor started to widen around its bigger body, due to the lack of nutrients in the carcassess cant no longer support the hardened shell

Mass extinction always a bad time for massive or complex predator creatures. This is what happends to Flork, where each generation of this species had another set of tentacles or something. This affects at some unfortunate areas in the world, where even carcasses of infected animals are hard to find. This malnutrition, eventually mutates the parents and the egg into what we known as Lesser Flork!

Less tentacle and features, Lesser Flork uses iths syphoning currents to navifate itself

Competition for sexual partners among the Miqeans led to intense rivalry between males of the species. In response, the species as a whole became larger and stronger. They retained clawed feet and still catch rides on the backs of other animals but are now equipped with large scythe-like claws on their front arms to defend themselves from rivals. This more muscular and aggressive species is known as a Chadqean.

I tried to shade it to make it look better, hope it helps!

So I still think there have been very very few instances of creatures resembling anything on earth.

I do kind of understand what's bugging you though.

I think the root cause is that there's a lot of opportunity for undirected evolution, and because it's a group effort, it becomes a lowest common denominator kind of deal.

I had a great deal of fun in this game, but if I were to run such a game ever, I might experiment with putting limitations on what is allowed for evolution. Maybe I would only allow evolutions that directly help the creature adapt to the extinction events, but I have not at all thought this through.

But to reiterate, this unrestricted evolution is also a lot of fun.

> some ID forces three consecutive evolutions to turn a fish into a root
> OP denounces the species
> Someone with artistical talent comes along and evolves the denounced branch
> The bodyparts retained a general phenotype but somehow its morphology is analogous rather than homologous

I'll retcon this ungodly thing because there are many voices speaking out in favour of it:
It has formed a symbiosis with a fungus, the species births as an animal, but slowly the fungus deconstructs the body parts until it's just a big blob in a shell of old bones.
The fungus lets it extract nutrients from the nutrient-rich mud of this planet, while the animal cells can form strong pumping vessles to transport them around the creature.

This just in case OP decides to accept it.

The floating illuvid you pointed descends from a creature initially described as plantlike, so herbivore food in my opinion.

However if you want you can evolve any of the other creatures to develop a mouth and a taste suitable to eat those chocolate bagels.

the clusterflorks and the Miqea robot-mantii are predators, most likely preying on creatures not under our control.

The remaining Reedover is exclusively cannibalistic.

The purple burk is a parasite

The illuvids filter micronutrients from the water.

Flilluvids started growing pods around its "skirt". As the pods mature and grow it detaches from the parent flilluvid as it begins to pump pollen spores from the central body to fertilize the pods.

As the pods are swept further it will begin to grow its own skirt leaf and mature and the cycle begins anew.

Plus, the whole point of the electromagnetic field was to keep gold away from it so it wouldn't die by ingesting it, pulling gold towards itself would be a terrible idea.

By this point, they had develop a more experienced flippers, with markings in it, that could help them get notified by the other member of their species. Its your typical next door predator after all. Their skins are also become more bound, almost likea texture of a leather.

The elements of an deep dark and fantastical culture are already showing.

While electric is an excellent start for communication, their eyes become dull due to being keen to exposed to electrical current in the water. Some sort of dark gelatinous cube helps them to combat the flashing lights. This in turn, resulted in a better coordination between members.

The potential for eletrical prowess become the most searched elements when mating, thus, with each generation, their electrical powers in Corkis rise up a bit after bit. Some had used this excess powers to illuminate their tail, giving yet another method for Corki to understand other member of their species. They dont see the colors, but they are reading with their horns the different electircal burst that other members are spewing, with rainbow like colors as its side effect

The Cluster Flork develops the ability to generate a toxic substance. This substance combines with bio-luminescent chemicals in its tail and is released through newly developed stingers in the tail. It releases the toxin freely into the surrounding water as it moves, but the toxin can also be injected directly for a more concentrated effect. Smaller doses induce nausea, larger doses cause hallucinations, and prolonged exposure results in seizures.

These toxins, combined with the Cluster Florks electromagnetic fields and hypnotic bio-luminescence, cause erratic behavior and mental trauma to nearby creatures, almost as if they are being driven mad.

After the virus had struck and the Ourkas had evolved to fight against it, ourkas of strange colour started to appear.
Some ourkas had not been born with thicker skin and instead had developed an immunity to the virus, though not without side effects.
Albino ourkas have lost most of their bright colours as well as their patterns falling off but have regained their ancestors affinity of bio-electricity, being able to shock through the skin as well as making larger electrical arcs.
The issue of letting the virus in, not only caused them to lose their colours but has also made them much more prone to mutations, as such, they evolve more strangely, rather than practically.

Well no one has made a new stage for this one yet and it's been a day so I decided to do it especially since it's from one of the original 4 species D:

Basically in the time since this last stage, the current animals have focused on residing secretly in the woolly zorrens' fur in order to keep warm. To aid in their new secretive lifestyle their bright colors have started to dim and they've become a bit smaller too.

Humongous tremors are rocking the earth, tearing parts of the mucky bottom of the sea to shreds. The golden waters quickly turn a deep brown, whilst the thick ashes of newborn vulcanoes turn the atmosphere a deep, dark colour of black, blocking the sunlight from spreading and making the world seem covered in a sooty mist. Only half the light reaches the bottom of the oceans now, but the greenhouse gasses released by the volcanoes compensate for the lost warmth.

Due to this geological disruption, large continents and permanent islands have emerged, covering about 15% of the planets surface. They are still largely empty, yet they are bound to be overgrown with other species within a, relatively speaking, short time.

All creatures depending on photosyntesis (Illuvids, Rourk), and depending on vision (the rest, IIRC, correct me if I'm wrong) will need to adapt. Adaptations need not be extremely realistic and plausible, yet not too big of a leap for the creatures themselves. Extinction will happen at 00:00 CEST, approximately one hour and ten minutes from now. I may not be awake anymore then, so I trust you guys to know when to stop.

OP's note: Holy shit guys, there's some incredibly nice art here right now. Well done. Also, I loved the fuck you cluster flork suggestions, but I won't add them because of obvious reasons.

The Curryk, with excess gold that is still floating around, develops bead-like objects that dangle off of its fins and tail. Due to the metallic composition, the 'beads' are charged with electricity, stunning any prey the Beaded Curryk brushes against.
As a side effect, the strong electric field it now generates allows it to sense any creatures nearby, negating the need for sight.

I'm working on a visual change for the Cluster Flork but it will probably take me a good few hours on account of me being bad at art and also having to do other stuff. But here's a text entry for the Cluster Flork since it wouldn't really change visually anyway.

The Cluster Flork uses it's bio-luminescence to light its way while emitting electromagnetic waves to sense nearby prey and other creatures. If anything, the lack of light is a boon for the Cluster Flork, as its hypnotic bio-luminescence is even more intense in complete darkness.

Electricity is channeled through the gold allowing it to sense any nearby changes, as well as making it's head much more durable.

Being relatively solitary creatures, the Cluster Flork have devised a means of long distance communication with others of its own species. By further developing the organs that produce electromagnetic fields, they can send out electromagnetic waves that will be picked up by others with the same organ and transmit signals. The Cluster Flurk have developed the ability to spawn little drones. These are not its young, but essentially segments of tentacle separated from the host. Each drone has an eye, siphons for propulsion, smaller tentacles for steering, neural packets (the same "brain" that the tentacles have) and the organ that allows it to send and receive electromagnetic signals.

The Cluster Flurk will send out a number of these drones to scout the environment around it for miles around, including potential threats and prey, as it swims. These drones have no means of defense or survival, and usually die a few hours after being spawned.

As the ashes finally settle, a bright new world is revealed (less vision has been removed, but this will not effect creatures who evolved resistance in any way). Many creatures roam the world.

Several creatures have evolved so much, they have become ultimate predators. They hunt, and their numbers continue to increase, whilst the numbers of their prey plummet. Even plantlife is affected by the lack of natural herbivores.

These hunters are so efficient that they have been able to hunt down any under-evolved creature currently existing to extinction, and underevolved plant species were unable to cope with this. ALL CREATURES THAT HAVE NOT EVOLVED A SINGLE EVOLUTION IN THIS ERA, HAVE ALREADY DIED OUT.

You know the drill, everything after the red line is at risk, yet this time there's species that have already perished, which is indicated on the map with a black cross behind them.

Since this event already happened, the deadline will be extended to 21:30 CEST (1hr 15 mins from now).

Sucks I only saw it with like 5 minutes left and couldn't think of something to put on the damn Ourka that wouldn't look completely out of place.
At least I can still mess with other creatures.
>>
>>230869
Now the ocean truly belongs to the Flurks. I think, not really sure where the Terrax hang out.

>>230751
The drones now posses thin, retractable spikes. These spikes act as a sort of antenna that, when stabbed into a creature, allow the Cluster Flurk to transmit electromagnetic signals directly into its brain. Currently this only serves to disorient prey until the paralytic poison can take full effect and the Cluster Flurk is close enough to take it down properly.

Yes, really. Deadline was already extended by half an hour.

For both of you, decent art doesn't matter at all, as stated 6 gorillion times in the OP, and you could always reserve a spot by saying your mutation and then arting, as has happened before.

Yo, you're the guy from the civ evo quest right? If I ever decide to turn this into a civ evo game, I could really use your help, though I am definitely not guaranteeing that this is going to happen.
>>
>>230970
yeah i am and i'm not good at making civ evo games
>>
>>230976
He's lying <3
>>
>>230869
Well, at least my little squid guys survived. Sadly, we lost our walrus thing. Still, OP, I think you really ought to give us 2 hours next time.
>>
>>231007
I feel flattered but I am still thinking about a new civ evo game but it's still in its very early stages
>>
>>231010
Well, 11 species still survived, and I didn't want to have it like last time, when 19 species made it through, but seven of them never evolving again, just taking up space in the charts and evolving for no reason..
>>
>>231042
Ah, good point.

The Flurk gain a strong beak to eat prey easier.

Oh yeah, I removed the rays if you're wondering. It's still there, I just don't feel the rays need to shown visually. After all, we already got the purplish color as visual confirmation.

Lurk gains a big nutsack so they can mate more often.

Boring sempai. Lovecraft is a limpdicked paranoid paleboid.

Might as well call him Dat Boi if you want people to recognize him

The reedoloon develops specialized muscular pumps in its air sacs that can propel it forward quickly in pursuit of prey or a mate. Wings have the sole purpose of latching onto a mate now. Its eyes have become larger, and it has some deep blue markings along its body to attract mates. It also has a larger cranium for processing situations and cooperatively making plans for catching prey by signaling each other in a primitive vocal language. They're better at learning. Females now carry their young in a compartment of their belly rather than laying eggs, to insure survival. Babies are born in the water and learn to fly in a matter of hours.

And thus, the reedojet is born.
>>
>>232167
Sorry m8 but the reedoloon went extinct a while ago.
>>
>>232167
Ancestors of these have been extinct for at least two extinctions, so no evolving for them anymore.
>>
>>230646
>>230684
Also, if anyone wants to evolve these that's fine by me.
>>
Damn did I kill this game by going overkill extinction?
>>
>>233608
No, it's dead because you need to make a new thread.

probably

>>
ok guys, I'm on the creation of the ultimate tree since the beginning.
This is so insane, the photoshop file is now at 2GB.
Any ideas to share it easily ?
>>
>>230813
Murktaurs develop stronger tails that lose their frills in favor of armor plating. They can use their tails like a whip and so wield the plating as a weapon rather than protection, using it to protect their rumps anyone gettin' too fresh.

Also they got a fifth digit, cuz only nerds and losers try to become intelligent with four fingers.
>>
>>233790
um mediafire or something idk.., you can also make a tree for each beginner organism and just skip some small upgrades if you know what i mean
>>
>>233790
Compress and shrink the pic for the thumbnail and link the original file on a file or image sharing website.

has the thread finally died? :(
