/qst/ - Quests

Welcome back to the quest. I've been on hiatus for a while and I deeply apologize but this time, we return to our young man from chapter 3. Rules are slightly changed and you roll a d100 for every combat option instead of an overly complicated Roll d100 for 'civ-wide' or 2d50s for luck and what have you. D20s will be used only for magic spells to just be simple but other than that roll a d100 for combat only. Everything else will be running with a popular vote unless I tell you.

Chapter 3:
We started off with the young man in a wasteland on the lost realm of Tophet. The young man wanders the world and finds danger quickly. After losing an arm he retreats to a stone hedge-like structure and is greeted by a dark hooded creature. It suggests to him to move to the green glowing site, the young man accepts and goes there, drinks an odd liquid, and then we return to him wandering the wasteland with his memory somewhat intact. Foul magic. He goes into the same building only to actually kill the creature that maimed him and finds a hatchet in the next room with an army of skeletons. He kills one and retreats back to the stone hedge. The dark figure then opens a portal for him back to Terra. He is now in a forest. Alone. Hearing sounds of a stream. It is getting dark and things that are foul roam the lands in dark times and dim lights.

I may or may not add a Pastebin with all the spells & demons but that wouldn't matter for this chapter, demon summoning will be with Roc.
Next post is the actual part where you choose an option.
>>
The tired young man looks around the small opening in the forest. The sun's light barely shines as it begins its well-deserved slumber. A faint sound of water running is off in the distance and all the young man's thoughts rush to it. He picks himself up from his wandering thoughts and moves toward the small sound. The sound of water becomes so foreign after not hearing it's sweet cacophony of life it heralds. His worn eyes barely open as he stumbles across the shrubs and old roots toward his goal. Time seems to stand silent as his hurried stumblings move him ever so closer to the faint sounds of nostalgia.

The trees begin to give way to a quaint creek. The young man drops down to cup his hands for the cold touch of the water. Dirt and silt dissolve into the water revealing rough hands, hands that are almost trembling as he drinks and drinks the crystal water. He tired eyes sweep the bank and the opposite side as he fills a small skin on his side. He tries to stand up only to begin to feel a great sense of fatigue and weariness. The world before his eyes begin to spin and his thoughts swim. The world about him dissolves like dirt in water turn his vision to black. He crumbles to the ground in pure exhaustion. His thoughts fade as his vision and the moon mounts the sky.

His body lay on the bank in the cold night, sprawled out and unmoving except the faint rise and fall of his breast. The sounds of rustling and life begin to stir as he lay there. Something comes and then leaves with the young man carried across the shoulder.

Days pass and nights leave as the man lay still, stuck within his mind in a slumber of near death fatigue. Light begins to assault his eyes and sounds of a small fire crackled in his ears. He begins to stir as he wakes from his long sleep.
>>
'Awake now are ye'?' A short gruff man asks from across the wooden room. 'It's been quite the time and me lassie's about tagive'nup on ye'. Say you didn't mind if we searched ye' before we brought ye'ere. Ye're covered in dust an' we 'ed to of giv'n ye' a quick clean'n, dust that much seem ye' been wander'n a desert for half a year there boy.' The man searches his thick coat before settling his calloused hands on a fine wooden pipe. He takes out a small amount of tabacco and sets it in and lites it. He puffs thoughtfully for a second before asking the young man, 'Where ye' been to get such on ye' I've worked in stone longer'n'ye' been born an' still havn't gotten that much on me.' The young man looks up and meets the man's eyes and before he could speak the man says, 'Nah, never'n'mind I's don't mean to pry, any matter whats yer' name there boy?'

The young man props himself up onto the backboard of the bed and says, 'Josef,' in a meek voice then he clears his throat and repeats himself in a clear voice.

'Ah, well Josef it's been fine meeting ye' me'ame's Grunam I work the smithy'ere'in town I was coming from me clan's mountain'ome te see'if they got any iron fer me smithy. I was bringin me cart 'ome and saw the creak was near so I went to fill me canteen an' I found ye' there passed out an'all. Yer' 'eavier than ye' look.' The man, no dwarf, says.

Soon another person comes in carrying a platter of bowls and cups and sets it on a table. 'I 'eard ye' two talk'n an' I thought it be best to snatch up some food fer' ye'. Grun 'ere says yer' 'eavy but I don't buy into that one bit, you look like skin an' bones from where I stan'. Me'ames Yorfea if ol' Grun didn't say nuthin' 'bout me.' Grunam looks somewhat offended but takes a long puff before speaking again.

'Yer' a good kid there Josef far as I can tell, ye' can stay fer' a bit before you head out if ye' want. I known how ye' types are, always running off to something lost me brother to nonsense like that. Can't hold ye' 'ere if I wanted though boy, not enough food for the three of us. War rations and all, damn mountain'ome not got enough problems already with sending us as smiths fer yer' kind, no offense there, now their wanting bodies fer' their crusade. Any matter, you can stay fer a bit if ye' want but I'll 'ave to ask ye' to leave come'n'ext week.' The dwarf stands from his chair and leaves with Yorfea after taking a loaf from the platter and pointing at Josef with the bread and smiling.

So damn Close.
>>
The young man is alone now in the room, the fireplace faintly crackles and squeaks. The room is a somewhat smaller than Josef is used to but it is better than anything he has slept in for weeks. He pushes himself up and shrugs off the sheets, pressing his bare feet against the wood floors he stretches out to take a loaf. It is soft and sweet to the touch, he eats as he stares off out through the window. A town of people, moving and doing things so lost in his memory it seems so odd. He begins to stand and he puts on clothes that were provided to him, trousers, linen shirt, shoes, and a tunic. His old clothes were too far gone to be saved by any tailor.

Josef looks around the small room as he puts the warm clothes on. Sitting on his bed facing the window and the chair the fireplace is to his right and the door is to his left. The house itself seems to be made for the dwarf's needs instead of a human's so it goes to guess that the dwarfs are here to stay for a while. The small fireplace glows a soft orange as it crackles and sighs, lighting the room. The blue sky seems through the window and it casts a golden light through the segmented glass. The room has a door that leads out and another that looks to lead to a closet. Josef gets up and slightly stumbles to open the closet door to find it filled with small dwarven clothing. and a few tools. It seems this is a second room perhaps where Grunam's brother used to sleep. At the top shelf, even if it is eye level, is a few leather bound books. The titles read things like a bestiary from the official office of magic. Others seem to be atlases and other things on runes he only guesses to what this collection was for. As he looks through the closet he finds a small locked chest. It rattles and seems to have something in it. Josef sets it down and goes to the window. The bright sunlight blinds him for a second and he blinks it away as he adjusts to the sudden change of light. He looks to see the people move about through the glass and finds it to be a great feeling of nostalgia. He spends most of the day looking through the books and sitting on the chair. The sun begins to dip down and bow out for the evening and it flares up brightly in a vivid amount of colors as if a finale to the day. He just tries to wrap his head around the sudden change of pace and the great feeling of peace.

Josef stands from the small chair and stretches before he opens the door and ducks under the beam. He glances around the somewhat larger room and sees Yorfea beginning to cook what looks to be a rabbit in a stew. He looks around the room and notices the large wooden table in the center above it hands a few candles that hang from an arched beam. Yorfea notices and pulls out a chair as she moves toward a spice cabinet. 'Come 'ere an' sit. Yu've been hold up in that room back there I'd almost think ye' dead.'

Josef goes to the chair and sits, it squeaks and moans as he sits not holding back it's true age. The room is filled with an aroma of strong spices. Grunam opens a door and with wide eyes looks at Josef sitting, 'Ye' look like ye' dead, come talk fer a bit. I barely know ye' an' I'm askin' ye' tp stay fer a week. How'd ye' even end up by that bank there anyway?' The old dwarf takes a seat opposite from Josef and waves to Yorfea, 'If it's a good story we're gonna need something strong there Yor.'

Yorfea goes to a back room and comes back out with three mugs and a large jug. 'Strong enough for ye' there Grun. The stew should be ready in a bit.' She leaves and goes back to cooking. Grunam takes a mug and takes a good swig of it before putting it down and nodding at Josef. It would be rude to not drink. Josef thinks and takes a sip from one of the great mugs. The stout alcohol burned his throat all the way to his gut and he definitely showed the surprising pain with a cough. 'There we go there lad!' The dwarf says in between a loud laugh and another swig of whatever concoction the brew is made of. 'So are ye' gonna start with yer' tale there?'

Josef nods and then speaks somewhat slowly, 'Well, it's nothing I've heard before that's for sure. Something like that would have never crossed my mind before I left.' Taking another sip at the terrifyingly strong drink he begins his story. 'My uncle was a merchant from Keep Withall and he wanted to take us, me and my betrothed, to Askabar because we have never been. It was going to be a short trip, there and back was only about two weeks but before we could..' Josef pauses, his words caught in his throat. Demons attacked us, how the hell would he ever know anything about demons.

A quick refresher, Roc is the other MC in the quest. Josef was found by him in the first chapter and then forced the captives to kill each other. Josef was the survivor. After a while, Roc summoned more demons and then Josef saw his chance and ran through a portal opened by Roc to Tophet. Which is where Chapter 3 starts off at.

The dwarf raised an eyebrow and Josef takes another sip and proceeds to cough out, 'Before we did.. before we could make it to Askabar... we were at one of the stops. A routine simple stop along the road when it got dark. We set up camp and we had the guards start a small patrol because bandits and highwaymen usually hold up merchants or worse beastmen come and attack but neither of that was the case. We went to sleep and came dawn I woke with a sudden sound of.. of a horse and then a clang against metal.'

Josef sighs and Yorfea brings out three bowls of stew and set the table for them. 'Don't mind me, lad, I'm listen'n.' She takes a mug and Josef looks down at the stew. 'You remember about five years back the war with those foul creatures and their dark magic?' Josef speaks up.

'Aye, they called'm'selves triflings'r'sumthing'r'another,' Grunam says.

'Tieflings,' Josef corrected, 'Their foul magic sprung a creature from hell and it commanded them. He called himself Roc, a daemon prince from Tophet nonetheless. The beasts slaughtered the caravan guards and killed most of the merchants. One guard was smart enough to run into the other side of the road and flee. Not my uncle. He wasn't blessed with cowardice. He was cursed with greed. He went head first for a damnable chest. He was pushed off and he got us all captured in the grasp of a hellish group of daemons and their minions, those tieflings.' Josef looks down at the table, trying to hide his face. Grunam and Yorfea are no longer smiling and cheerful but a dismal feeling washed over the table.
>>
'We were dragged into their hideout and chained up like pets. Days spent down there like pigs waiting for the butcher. Roc came into the prison we were held and dropped blades at my uncle's feet. There were four of us, a bloody coward of a guard, my uncle, my betrothed, and me. We all watched and petrified in fear. The guard disobeyed the daemon and was slain on the spot. My uncle grabbed a sword and like a wild man.. he..' Josef's face ran with tears and much of what he said was cracked. 'he took the damned blade and killed my poor betrothed. My poor.. my poor Amanda. I held her as she bled out, I couldn't do anything her throat has been cut so I grabbed a sword and... and I killed my uncle.' Josef stops unable to completely say what had happened. broken in his speech he was able to tell them that he was able to escape after the daemons captured a large group of festering goblins.

Grunam clears his throat and visibly distraught ran through his face, 'I'm.. I'm sorry to hear that lad. I'd of known I'd of keep me mouth shut. Sorry'fer'askin'. Times like these it's a blessing we have a good ale. Drink as much as you want Josef.'

The rest of the night was set in silence. The food was as strong as the ale but it was still edible. Josef got up and left the room to return to sleep after he thanked the dwarfs. The room was now cold, the fire has died and the warmth left, he crawled into the straw bed as the blue moonlight shined through etching the wooden stone floors. The morning came too soon it seemed and Josef woke and got dressed for the day.

Josef takes a deep breath before he opens the door only to find Grunam standing in front of it. 'Ah, yer' about to go I see. Well, don't let me hold ye' up fer' too long there.' He looks somewhat ashamed and so he gets out of Josef's way. Looking back Grunam looked like he didn't sleep at all. Josef was stopped in front of the door to leave by Yorfea. She is holding a canteen. 'Ye' look like ye'd need it lad.' She hands him the canteen and pats him on his back as he leaves.

The small town is bustling with people and trade even as early as it is now. Josef looks down at the canteen, it is a somewhat brass or golden look to it which means it is definitely dwarf iron. It has an ornate face of a dwarf on its front and on the back has a rune though Josef doesn't know what it means exactly. The metal canteen has a strap so he hooks it onto his belt on the back. Josef looks around and leaves the smith's house to walk through the town. After some time wondering, he finds himself in the market place which is more lively than the normal streets. The place is more of a square with around fifteen stalls open that surround a rather large fountain. The town is more of a city. Its roads are paved and it seems to have a healthy amount of commerce. The major stall seems to be selling elven wares and other trinkets yet it isn't run by an elf honestly, he hasn't seen anyone that isn't human living in this city other than Gronam and Yorfea.

Josef leaves the market and wanders some more. He finds himself at a rather ornate building that would be spotted as a temple. At the front is a line of people and at the front of the line is a small group of armored men and women working at a desk. Recruiters. The line seems to be moving quite fast so Josef gets in it. After waiting a little bit he can finally hear what the recruiters are saying.
>>
'-- gods hand be the one that guides, join the effort to banish all that is evil. The crusade calls upon all who are able to stand and fight for the rightful King he who was announced by the gods themselves!'

'The gods are dead you fools!' A loud man blurts out. 'They've been dead for years and you.. all follow a dead king!'

"Blasphemer!' One of the others say out. 'The gods will smite you while you stand there!'

'Then where are they!' The blasphemer says before he is run through with a gilded blade. A man in the same type of metal armor stands behind him and says, 'I am the hand of the gods that smite thee. Bare witness.' The man drops to the stone below and blood pools at Josef's feet. The grim sight didn't seem to bother any of the others in the line and ignored the dead man's cries for help. 'Those who disgrace the names of the gods are disgracing the king himself. Join us to protect from such heretic filth.'

The gilded man stood tall in his armor and the blood that splattered did not even touch it, not even the blade is touched. A light is about him, almost divine. The knight sees the stares and looks at Josef. 'Join to protect. You too shall be restored.' His almost hollow metallic voice echoes. The line is almost at Josef. He thinks about joining the crusade after what happened to his family. To protect. The line is at him. The recruiters ask for his name and what he would do. The list reads off some magic and other things like foot soldier, spearmen, halberdiers, as well as a paladin. Not many seemed to be signed up for this job though it is the most alluring. He decides he should be a paladin if he is to join, he only heard wonderous stories about these heroes who valiantly slay daemons and remove the corruption of the world about them. If he were to join that is.

Josef looks at each of the recruiter's faces, they seemed so calm and collected in a way he has never seen before. The question eats away at him, though, why did they kill the man instead of just locking him away for heresy? This is a civil society, we are not mindless savages. 'The hell was that?' He asks without thinking almost like someone else said it, 'Public execution? Are we not all allowed to a fair court of law?'

Large metal hands clasp down on his shoulders, the same knight who slew the man. 'Steel yourself boy. The god's will is the law. We are their hand, and by extension their will. Heresy is an act against the king as the king is appointed by the gods. The man was a traitor and he was put down like one. There is no room for heretics like him.'

The other recruiters agreed with the man. 'Justice is swift. If we are to hold this empire we cannot allow heresy like this to grow unless we wish to end up like those who drank the blood of the daemons.' Another one says. Josef looks around and the knight behind him releases him, 'You have a good heart though boy, reminds me much of myself. You should join the good cause, I saw you looking at the Paladin job, it is noble.'

The knight nods at the others and then he leaves. Was that a paladin? The others look at Josef patiently awaiting his decision.

'Uhh, alright, well I'm sorry but I'm not going to sign up today I just wanted to get a flyer.' Josef said uneasily, 'Gods be with you.'

'Gods be with you too, don't think about it too long, though, blasphemy can take all and you must steel yourself from such abominations.' The recruiter nods to another and says something as Josef takes a flyer. 'Next!'

The line shifts forward and Josef leaves watching the dead man still bleed out. He hurries back to the market to collect himself from the rather odd series of events. His worries melt away as another event approaches. A large crowd near the center begin to make a circle. Knights rush past to find others who are barking out commands. The crowd begins to become coherent and chant in unison. 'False prophets!' 'Down with king Edle!' 'Killer of sons!' The crowd begins to get angry with the men who try to restrain them. Another group in gray stitched robes leave in an alleyway. The crowd begins to become violent and the knights draw their swords. The sound of steel meeting flesh and tearing cloth is heard and a few more knights run past Josef almost pushing him over. Josef gathers himself and looks around, 'what the all the gods names is happening?" Josef says under his breath. There are few paths not blocked with infighting. One of them is the alleyway the robed men fled into, another is a path that leads close to Grunam and Yorfea's house. Another leads towards the temple. The paths seem to start to get more and more filled If I'm to act I need to act now.

Josef looks around the chaos that was unleashed before him and bolts to where he saw people escaping. He runs to the alleyway where the robed men disappeared into. He dodged a few rotten tomatoes, and even a torch before he made it to the alley. The robed men he saw before seemed to of left so he continues on through the alley. It makes a sharp turn to the left and it shows a scene of another mob of angry peasants fighting with the authoritative knights. There is, however, another way, another left, that takes him into a house which doesn't seem to be locked. Josef makes the decision to escape a mob only to find another so instead of going into the mob he takes the door.

Through the door, he finds the room to be empty of most people save a few scared men and women. The room is filled with broken bottles and tables and chairs are knocked over. It is a tavern and they are wanting to know what is going on out there. The sounds of a riot are all around them and glass breaks as stones are flung. Another glance Josef swears he can see a robed man move upstairs, which is helped by the fact of footsteps being heard above. The tavern patrons begin to boards up the windows and most flee the scene to loved ones or some other need. The good majority of them seem too gripped by fear to move. Taking a quick glance around the tavern seems to have a few bits of weaponry. Swords and shields are mounted on the walls there is even a great sword mounted behind the counter.

Sorry I passed out last night.

Id prefer just the shield. You dont want them to attack you. And where's the dagger/dirk/knife man? Rogue ftw.
>>
>>222175
Just a shield ain't gonna do shite if we actually DO need to kill somebody. Also go away rouge. Horrible little creatures.
>>
>>222186
coughCpt.Americacough
And the rogue archetype is awesome :(
>>
>>222186
And why would you need to kill someone? Incapacitation is enough if you have no choice but to retaliate with violence. The shield is more than enough.
>>
>>222204
Ah yes, the soldier who took a lot of drugs while already being the Superior master race of Blonde hair and blue eyes.

Not my cup of tea, I prefer Tanks or atleast heavy armor being.
>>
>>222215
Thats yours, and this mine. I can respect that. And who said you need to be a super soldier to execute some badass moes with the shield? The rim of a shield to the temple hurts like Hell. And itll assist in push and shoves. Nevertheless, we didnt follow them to fight.
>>
>>222221
Jesus christ. If only that one was a two. Also to say beating someone with a shield sounds cool, we once killed a demon with a plank of wood, We still have that and an axe back at the dwarf house, also the dwarf is a smith.

I'll start in an hour. so, decide what we are going to do. sword? shield? sword and shield? axe? Greatsword?
>>
>>222881
Please elaborate. What weapons do we already have?
>>
>>222918
A plank of wood which we have two marks/tallies on it and a metal axe. We don't have either on our person, though.
>>
>>222929
How combat-handy is our boy? A sword alone can exert more force but a sword-shield combination makes you a lot more deadly if you know how to fight. A lot more ways to kill (ironically, youd think a shield is solely used for protecting). I still want only a shield but if we're going to keep them then a sword would be pretty useful in the future. And you italicized "Greatsword". Makes me want to choose that but Im no fan of greatswords or any larger sword for that matter.
>>
>>222929
The tallies are kills: one skeleton, and a demon/abomination/tentacle monster.

He is somewhat a frail man, thin but with a muscular look to it. He was a nephew of a somewhat successful merchant. He learned how to survive in Tophet somewhat to find water. He isn't like a strapping prince with large muscles but it seems he could be.

I italicized the word greatsword to just end the sentence. If you want you can do a write in to inspect each a few weapons before choosing. this will take time in the game but it would give you a better understanding of each weapon.
>>
>>222982
Does the this time increase with the number of weapons we choose to inspect?
>>
>>223005
I would think so, just don't inspect the entire tavern if the goal was to catch up to the robed men.
>>
>>223030
>inspect shield
>>
>>223034
kek.

You can inspect more than just one. There are a few different shields and swords so it might become odd if you say shield or shields. A shield or A sword would make sense. The greatsword is only one item, there are also multiple axes.

You can do something like find a short sword or find a buckler. If it isn't exotic the tavern should have it somewhere. Some are sharper than others so you can check sharpness.
>>
>>223073
Motherfucker
You're evil QM. I thought this was a tavern. Give me a sturdy circular shield. Not too large, medium, small, or somewhere in between.
>Inspect a shield
>>
>>223073
Are there other shield that fit that description other than the buckler?
>>
>>223102
Heater, parma, there is a thing called a targe which is kinda the same length of a buckler. Heater shields are a small kite shield. Parma is a larger buckler.
>>
>>223102
So we are looking for your description nothing too big. alright, that would be it just to not overcomplicate something simple, I'm sorry.

So one vote to look for a medium shield. That won't take that long, if you want you can vote for another weapon.
>>
>>223138
Parma or buckler. What kind of swords?

Josef looks around the tavern, the swords hang limply on the walls and beams. Josef inspects a few swords, one of which he finds an arming sword that isn't completely dulled. He runs his thumb against the edge and it still holds one however somewhat duller than he would have wanted. The tavern patrons look worriedly out the broken glass windows fearing the civil unrest outside the walls of the mean hall. Footsteps are still heard from above so Josef continues his search for something to defend himself with. He looks around the tavern's many mounted shields some with heirloom crests painted on them some blank wood. He takes one from a rack and puts it on. It covers up to near his elbow which is perfectly fine for anything that could happen right now.

Torches are thrown outside setting an adjacent thatch roof aflame. Footsteps and worried cries sound out as the fire rages on. A window is broken from upstairs and shuffled feet makes Josef hurry. The stairs seem fire but the fire is almost near the tavern.

Sorry had to get dinner.

Josef looks around the tavern a few people start to leave in a hurry as they see the fire move closer. A few stop and look at Josef as he was getting his gear ready. Josef then tells them, 'There is a riot out there if I was you I'd go to your house and lock up. The marketplace is where it started as much as I can tell.' The few that heard nodded and left through where Josef came in.

It seems the fire is real close and he can hear the fire rage outside the tavern. Taking a quick glance of the tavern Josef leaves through the alleyway where he heard the glass break. it seems the patrons escaped the alley. Looking up Josef can see the robed men climb down the side of the tavern. Josef watches as they climb down and a few notice him as they get to the ground. 'Ew' da fok are yew?' One of the robed men calls out.

They draw their weapons as they saw Josef with his out. 'Hey, Why were you running from the marketplace?' Josef backs up slightly, 'I saw you run into the alleyway so I followed you.' The robed men stop slightly and look at each other and then call out, 'That's our business, fok off.' They don't seem to want to work with Josef and they walk forward slightly.

The robed men do not seem to be very wanting of discussion, 'Hey, look I just wanted to know what you were doing, I'm not here to fight,' Josef says that and tucks his sword between his belt, 'Why don't we try to talk it out real quick.'

'We ain't bout to fuk'n talk wit ew',' One says. Another with a staff pushes to the front of them and says,'He saw too much already. No need to let him leave, kill him.'

Josef brings up his shield to cover him and turns his head and yells 'Guards!' Though he doubts anyone can hear him since the riot is going on. Josef draws his sword, The one with a staff begins to cast a spell but it sizzles out. Another man lunges out and cuts Josef on his leg. There are around five of these robed men. Each wielding a sword other than the one with a staff. Josef lowers his shield and then swings but misses one. 'We told'ew to fok off boy, now ew gunna git it.'

There is no chance to try to converse with them now.

Josef slams his shield against the guy in front of him and then drops his guards. Josef then sheaths his blade and then yells looked beyond the cultists, 'Thank you for showing up guards!' The robed men then turn and looked behind them. Using this time Josef tosses his shield at them hitting one in the leg. Turning and running Josef goes back into the marketplace. Blood and bodies litter the floor as guards and peasants lay bleeding. Josef looks around the carnage of the revolt and then keeps moving on, no one here can actually be helped. Josef shakes his head and turns the corner of the street to the dwarfs house only to run into a tall metal person. The 'paladin'

The 'paladin' then says, 'Oh hey there Josef.' He helps Josef back up and then pats him on the shoulder, 'Good to see you didn't get caught up in the mess, though last time I didn't see you had a sword.' Wait how does he know my name? 'Don't think about it much,' The 'paladin' then says, 'You probably forgot who I am anyways.' Wait what? The paladin seems that he can almost read minds, which explains the weird feeling Josef gets around the 'paladin'.

'Filthy beasts them all.' The 'paladin' says somewhat mindlessly. 'I hate doing work here.'

'Oh, hey it's good to see you. I was just going back home.' Josef said somewhat shyly, 'Hey, so I'm pretty sure I found the guys who started the riot.'

'Good. Who are they?' The 'paladin' asked.

'A couple of heretics in gray robes. They attacked me that's why I have a sword. They will probably follow me to the marketplace.' Josef replies. The 'paladin' nods his head slowly and passes Josef heading to the marketplace. 'We will meet soon Josef, Don't worry I will explain things some time.' The 'paladin' calls out as he waves his hand. Josef shakes his head and leaves to the dwarfs' house.

There seemed to be no fighting this far from the market place but it seemed they were not unaffected. People were looking out their windows wanting to know what happened some were in the streets pointing at the smoke. Josef finally got to the house and knocked on the door. The door almost swung open instantly and Grunam bursts out, 'Took yer' fuk'n time didn'tcha? There's stew in the pot and we wanta know what's happened now.'

'Riot happened, knights say it was blasphemers and the lot started a fight with the guards. I got caught up in the mess and I had to fight some of the cultists.' Josef says. Grunam shakes his head in disappointment, 'Damn Krendar must be involved. The fukkars damn near started a war already now their try'n to start infightin'.' Yorfea comes into the room and shakes her head, 'Krendar ye say Grun? If it be then it's a biggar mess'n'what we thought. Bout as worse as those who live'n the spikes.'

Grunam sits down and takes out his pipe, 'Spikes? Fukkars still call themselves dwarfs!' the dwarf laughs loudly, 'It's like if them Krendar called'm'selves men, they're damn savages.' The dwarf looks at Josef and pats a chair. 'There's gunna be some shite going down fer a few days now, best be if we just kept'n to ourselves. You should stay till things blow ovar.' Josef sits and the rest of the night is filled with small talk and food. Riots do not meet this part of the city today but it does seem the rioting stopped for some time.

Josef finishes the very strong food the dwarfs made and then says, 'You know when I told you about me going to talk to the recruiters? And about how that man died?' Grunam nods and so Josef continues, 'Who is the man in the gilded armor? Is he a paladin? He seemed to know my name and called me by it.'

Grunam raises an eyebrow and then sighs, 'Oh the golden creep. E's a temple knight, not a paladin. The temple guard is who'e works for, most of 'em are psions and 'oly magic wieldars. They are fanatics the bunch but they can fight like an armeh. The on' that works with the recruitars nam'is Renn, the man acts like a damn god but don't tell'm I said that. He nevar knew my nam though kind of got angre with me when he couldn't get past me mind.'

Josef thanks them for the dinner and with the dwarfs nodding he then leaves them to be. Temple knight huh? And dwarfs are resistant to psions? Josef opens the door to his room and sighs as in the sight of a bed, sleep. Josef shrugged off his day wear and crawled into a warm bed after lighting a small fire in the fireplace. The moonlight creeps through the window like shafts it lights up the dust that twinkles past. The faint orange glow warms the room and crackles softly. Sleep.

The morning's sun shines slightly through the window and fills the room with its warmth. The colorful sky painters can never capture lights the sky with its glory as it too wakes from its slumber. Josef wakes up slowly and to his surprise a knock on his door breaks the silence of the early dawn. Josef quickly gets presentable and opens the door to face Grunam. 'Ay there lad, I saw you brought ina blade last night it's absolute shite. Who gave ye' that, if it's an heirloom then shame fer it's kept so poorly. Ye' can carry on' of me blades I've made, their far bettar than the butter knife you'd be carry'n'round.'

Confused in the morning Josef nods and lets himself wake up as the dwarfs work around the house. Grunam takes a loaf of bread and dons his blacksmith's apron, 'I'll be out late. Whole city 'bout asked fer a damn order,' before he leaves he looks at Josef and says, 'Don't ferget 'bout me offar there lad. Not everyday ye' get offar'd a dwarf-smith'd blade.'

Josef sits down and eats breakfast and has a small chat with Yorfea about the city learning a few things like where Grunam works and the temple's history.

Josef thanks Yorfea for another meal and leaves taking the canteen with him. Josef heads out to the marketplace to see what became of it and to see if there are those who can explain what happened. Upon finding the market he finds a group of people standing before knights. 'Please stand back, the market has been closed for investigation by the Holy Order. Leave the area or be considered trespassing on the King's orders.' A knight with graying hair repeats. The Knights seem not allow any pass them and between the cracks of pleading people Josef can spot a few temple knights in the courtyards looking over the bodies. There seem to be a quite few people who are mad at their wait. Most of the people begin to leave and so does Josef.

There is no way to get into the market so Josef goes to find the tavern he was in before. He finds his way with some difficulties and enters the empty burnt tavern. There is very little to be scavenged from the remains save a few blades and other items that do not burn in a house fire. The alleyway is also closed off and under investigation so Josef leaves. He asks around the city's stores to see if anyone knows what happened and most just tell him that is was just a riot started by blasphemers.
