You are woken up by the feeling of a warm liquid running through your hair and down your face. You could have sworn you were just walking a second ago. Everything seems fuzzy and there’s a pretty loud ringing in your ears. You take a breath and cough as bits of dirt enter your mouth, and not soon after.. your mouth is greeted with the wonderful taste of copper. Trying to focus your eyes, a red blur overtakes your left field of vision.
‘Oh… This is my blood.’

It all started coming back to you now. School had just let out, and you were on your way home when you felt something slam into the back of your head. The ringing in your ears started to let up as you could start to hear voices, Loud angry voices.

”You hear me small ears? You don’t belong here..

”Why don’t you take your whore of a mother and go live with the humans?”

”You better just up N’ leave before you end up dead halfy. We ain’t gonna go easy next time."

Small ears… Halfy… They were some of the dumbest insults you ever had the displeasure of listening too, but that’s what they called you. Normally you weren’t the kind of guy to take this shit lying down, but it didn’t matter how many times you told your arms to move, you were stuck there, motionless on the ground. It seems your classmates had grown a pretty big pair since hitting adulthood. The 3 distinct voices kept up the verbal assault about how you’re no good, don’t deserve to be amongst the elves, and deserve to be killed. Pretty big talk for a bunch of cowards having to strike you from behind with god knows what.. Something heavy. Your head was killing you, but hopefully not literally.

The 3 men started delivering kicks into your hips and back, causing your muscles to spasm as the pain shot through your body, It didn’t hurt nearly as bad as it should have and that started to worry you. It was then that you could hear a soft, faint voice calling out from the distance.
”Stop right now!.
The voice was very familiar to you, It was…

>one of the town guards.

Turning your head towards the source of the voice, with your right eye you could clearly make out just who it was approaching and screaming at the trio. It was an old friend of yours, Kayla Isemeine, One of the town guard. Since you often found yourself in trouble for defending yourself or in todays case, a victim, You ended up spending a fair amount of time around her, and got to know each other enough to call one another friend.
The sudden sight of an authority figure caused the men to make a sprint in the other direction. How very typical.

“pfff…Pussies..” You muttered under your breath as you struggled to push yourself upright.

Kayla ran past you in an effort to chase after the men before slowing down seeing the futility in it. As she turned around and approached, you had managed to sit yourself upright and wipe the blood out of your eyes.
Not long after sitting up you felt a wave of dizziness wash over you as you brought your hands up to your eyes, clutching your brow between your fingertips. Lifting your head once more and blinking rapidly, your vision returned and the world quit spinning. A quick glance past Kayla revealed the weapon they had clocked you with.

“A fucking branch? That's it?” The words slipped out of your mouth as you saw the crude weapon. It almost felt a little insulting, Just some old random tree branch.. It had been broken over your head and looked quite thick from where you were, and the blood on it was certainly yours. You found your train of thought being interupted.

”What did you go and do this time Will? Kayla yelled out as she made her way to you.

“You know me, I commit the horrible atrocity that is, walking home from school.” You shout back sarcastically. ‘After all, Who wouldn’t be absolutely thrilled to be assaulted for having been born?’ You thought. Although, this was the first time they used a weapon while striking you with your back turned. It actually made you concerned about what the eventual ‘next step up’ from that would be.
Shaking her head, Kayla held out a hand as you took it and she pulled you up. She turned a head back in the direction the guys had run off in, and let out a large sigh.
”looks like it’s going to be a long day…” Kayla mumbled, scratching the back of her head.

>”Forget about it, you don’t need to waste the time tracking them down. I can handle myself.”

>”I better hear all about what you did to those pricks tomorrow.”

>”Hey, let me tag along. They went way to far this time.”

You also let out a large sigh hearing the displeasure in her voice. You knew that this incident meant she would have to spend all day running around trying to find out who those chumps were, and you felt a little guilty for giving her all that extra work.

“I’ll let you get on with your job.. Thanks for looking after me there.”

Kayla turned her head towards you with a smile, saying ”It’s my pleasure Will. But her smile quickly turned to a frown as she continued.
”You don’t deserve to be treated this way.. You shouldn’t keep trying to just put up with it. Things are getting out of hand.”

She wasn’t wrong, but the last thing you wanted to do was get other people involved. The last time someone stood up for you, they became the next victim. Ever since you’ve tried your damnedest to keep it between you and them. You figured it didn’t matter how much the law got involved because it wasn’t going to change how they felt, or what people keep saying behind your back. It wouldn’t make all the hateful looks go away.

Humans and elves had been at war ever since you were born. You didn’t know why, Hell your teachers didn’t even have any clue what it was even about, but that’s why everyone looked at you differently. Your mother had got with some guy who’s our sworn enemy.
So where did that leave you in this “us” or “them” mentality everyone had? You guessed that made you the ‘OR’.

“It’s not like I enjoy having to put up with it Kayla…but I have too.”
You knew that if you tried to give her the full story, she’d just start harping on you for making excuses, and that your wellbeing is just as important and yada yada yada.
Kayla just cocked her head and put her hands to her hips at the remark.
One awkward stare later, she began to stretch out her arms and legs.

”alright, I’ve gotta get going. Head straight home for me okay? I have tomorrow off so I’ll treat you to something nice for being so late today.
And before you had any chance to agree or refuse, off she went. Running down the path full speed.
You hated that. She up and blames herself for something that isn’t her fault, then runs off while you’re holding the bag..
Your head was throbbing pretty bad, but the dizziness had subsided. You pondered over what to do next.

>Better head home like Kayla asked.

>I think I’ll stop by the doctors first.

>I feel like talking a walk around town first.

>I think I’ll follow her instead.

You figured your head would be alright, and started heading home as Kayla instructed. Better to just get home quick than to risk running into more ‘kind gentlemen’. The surrounding forest grew quite thick and the canopy quite dense the further away you got from the school building. The area around the school was actually the one place the most light actually managed to get through.

The settlement of Grasmere was fixated in the middle of the elven woods. A massive expanse of forests and woodlands that covered the northern half of the continent. Grasmere also had the advantage of being relatively close to the elven capital city of Wellspring. The talk of the town was how the humans wouldn’t dare march on Grasmere with the capital on our borders, How it would just be suicide to march through miles and miles of harsh terrain, wild beasts and elven armies to reach this town.

You had too many problems to worry about all that nonsense though. The war had been going on for 18 years and it still had yet to have any real impact on your life. You knew a few people whose parents were lost in the war, but even they were voluntary. There wasn’t any sort of draft to speak of, so even you had become skeptical of the severity of ‘the human threat’.

Grasmere wasn’t a very big town. The homes were pretty widespread and it would be quite a rare sight to see large crowds on any given day. It was a peaceful and lovely place, with homes delicately woven in and out of the large tree’s mixed throughout the town square. Those with a little extra coin managed to get their homes built up along the side of some of the largest tree’s overlooking the entire settlement. You often wondered what it must be like looking down on everything from so high up.

Heading off the main path that cut through the center of town, you headed eastwards to a relatively small home, located on the very edge of Grasmere. The wilderness was your back yard, and you often found yourself wandering through it, enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. Any chance you could find to get away from people you would hop on.

With a brief knock on the door, you entered your home and removed your shoes, Before you even had a moment to wash yourself off, your mother came barreling out of her room to greet you, and stood awestruck at the grizzly sight of blood stained hair and cloths.

”Oh my god! William! What happened to you!?!” She franticly darted over to you and started poking and prodding, adjusting your chin and peering you up and down from her tip toes, her face awash with terror.

>Explain what happened.

>”im alright mom, it wasn’t a big deal. just the usual.”

>”Look I’ll tell you everything after I wash off.”[lie] then sneak out the bathroom window and head to the woods.

As your mother mashed your face around and pulled you down to her height so she can examine every inch of your head, you blurt out. “Augh.. Mom its fine.. It’s just the usual brutes giving me a hard time again..”

”Fine? Fine?!?! You call this fine??! Look at your head, you’re bleeding all over sweetie!!”
Saying it was the same old same old didn’t seem to have any impact as she was still crawling all over you trying to determine what had happened.

“Look, they just got a little rough this time alright? I’ll be okay. I just want to get cleaned up before I bleed all over the house.. Can I do that please?” You gruffly replied, desperately trying to get out of her clutches.

Your mother paused after hearing your remark, and looked down to see a few droplets of blood had already fallen to the floor, and consequently, on her clothes as well.
With a high pitched shriek, she immediately started shoving you down the hall and into the bathroom, slamming the door behind you. As she scurried back down the hall you could hear here muttering about how ‘it’s all ruined! These stains will never come out!’ and every other synonym for ‘my life is ruined’ you can think of.

Elven baths were quite crude in nature, and served as little more than a bucket of water in a drain less tub, that needed constant changing with each use. Removing what clothing you could, you dunked your head into the bucket to be met with lukewarm water. It was extremely refreshing as the bucket water turned red and your hair returned to its natural shade of dark brown. After rinsing yourself off and tossing out what blood soiled water you could, you walked over to a mirror mounted on a small cabinet to examine yourself.

The bleeding had stopped, but you took note of several bruises along your chest and back from the repeated kicks you received while on the ground. You took an extra minute to admire yourself while you had the chance.
You weren’t nearly as slim and slender as other elves. The muscle mass had come naturally to you, being half human. It also left your hair color darker than every other elf with brown hair you had seen. You were quite tall all things considered, standing eye to eye with most elves and being only slightly shorter than some. It at least gave you a little advantage when the eventual brawls erupted at school.

After changing cloths you headed back out into the hall and saw your mother sitting in the living room, sulking. The sun was almost completely set, and it left the room with a very dim orange glow. It was a pretty depressing sight.

>Leave her be and head to bed and rest.

You couldn’t stand to see her like that. You quickly trot on over to her side and took a seat, Flopping your head into her lap. She squeaked, having been startled by your brash action, but then slowly began to run her fingers through your hair. You rolled around onto your back and looked up at her, and could see the tears welling up in her eyes.
Your stomach churned at the sight, and you felt your heart sink. This was the first time you ever came home all bloodied up, and the last thing you wanted to do was worry her this much. Hell, what if Kayla hadn’t shown up? Looking back at the situation, You very well could have died there if those pricks didn’t stop.. You tried to look for the right words to say but she started speaking first.

”I’m so happy you’re okay dear…. So happy.. you… you’re still… She started getting choked up as she sniffled and wiped at her eyes.

“Yeah mom, I’m still fine. I’m okay!... its okay.. really…”
Your mind quickly raced around in circles trying to come up with something that might ease her fears, comfort her in some way. You knew anything along the lines of ‘trust me’ wouldn’t cut it this time.

“y..you know, Kayla actually saw the guys who did it this time. She’s out there showing them what’s what right now, so… You won’t have to worry mom. I’ll be careful, I promise.”

You couldn’t tell if any of your words had gotten through to her as she looked down at you, with such a horribly sad expression on her face. You then heard her mumble between gasps,

”I’m sorry… Will… It’s….. It’s my fault…. That all this…”
‘That this what?! It’s your fault this happened?!?!’ you shouted the words in your own mind. The implication angered you far more than it should have. Yet again, someone was blaming themselves for what sick, twisted assholes did to you on a daily basis. Your own mother.. Feels.. Guilty, for what? Giving birth to you? Does she think if she got with some elf you’d be the same old fellow but without being ridiculed and hated? You had no idea what she was thinking but it pissed you off.
It pissed you off a lot.

She must have seen all that anger in your eyes as she brought a hand up to her mouth as she stared at you wide eyed.
you could only manage to bite you’re tongue and look away. You dug deep to force out the words.
“Don’t say that…. Don’t you dare blame yourself…”
You wanted to say a lot more than that, but you knew it would just make things worse. The last thing you wanted right now, was to hear and see your mother crying. You were barely managing to keep yourself together at this point.

>”Where do you think dad is right now?”

>”I don’t blame you mom.”

>”I know I’m the one who got beat up… but are YOU okay?”

>Remain silent and head to your room.

You couldn’t just leave things as they were. Something had to be wrong.

“I know that I’m the one who got all beat up…. But are YOU okay mom?” you asked softly, Bringing a hand up into the air as she took it in her own.

”You’re too sweet dear.. im okay.” she said in a toneless fashion.
It was extremely unlike her.

“Hey now, you can’t do that. That isn’t fair. I didn’t even get a chance to hide what was wrong with me, you can’t just go and hide what’s bothering you now.”
You managed to make her laugh a little, as her grim expression showed a small glimmer of happiness. A look that you had been so used too, that you didn’t think you would actually miss seeing.

”Okay… The truth is William.. I don’t want to worry you either.. I know that things have been so very very hard on you.. It always seemed too selfish for me to say anything.” Her hand had gone from brushing your hair to holding your cheek now as she continued.
”It hasn’t been easy for me dear… They also look at me with those hate filled eyes.. I’m treated like a traitor.. They hold just as much contempt in their hearts for me as they do you Will… Maybe even more.

Now you felt guilty. You never gave it much thought because of the fact that she never once mentioned any of that, But it made more sense than you wanted it too.
She did ‘the unthinkable’ with a man. A human man, A soldier in their army no less. DURING the war, and you were the proof of that. All the evidence they ever needed to shoot down your mother was alive and well, walking the towns, attending classes, shopping for groceries… everything and anything she didn’t do in town.. That must have been why.. and to top it all off, here you are, walking into her home a bloody mess..

It felt as if your arms had a mind of their own as they wrapped themselves around your mother. You’re sure she needed it a lot more than you did, and you felt her return in kind. You honestly felt like you couldn’t do enough to make up for all the horrible things she had been enduring on your behalf this whole time. It ate away at you.

”You’re father would be so very proud of you William…” She whispered, as you both remained holding eachother.

>”What was dad like?”

Your father would be proud? It’s not like you knew.. She hardly ever talked about the man, let alone the sorts of things he would be proud of.
“Proud of me? Why. What was he like?” You asked as you let go and get comfortable in your seat.

”Your father was a very chivalrous Man, and very brave. Even though it was against his orders, and it put not only his life, but his family at stake, He did everything he could for us. He saved many of us from certain death at the hands of the human army… If it wasn’t for your father, I wouldn’t be here right now.. and he certainly didn’t have to do what he did.. She said. Your mother took a long pause and looked out the nearby window at the setting sun. It had painted the entire town a brilliant orange as the rays of light pierced through an opening in the tree tops as she continued.

”He talked about his family a lot.. How the army held them hostage if he refused the draft.. About how he wouldn’t see an end to this war.. I think that was partially why one thing lead to another.. But I never got a chance to tell him he had a son, but I just know that he would be happy to see his boy has grown into a caring and fine young man.

You really didn’t know how to feel about that. Part of you was upset that he hadn’t been around as you grew up, but it’s not like he could just drop everything and live amongst the elves. You didn’t think such a thing would ever be possible.
Another part of you felt sad that your mother had to endure all this loneliness because of how things had turned out. You couldn’t help but wonder how different things would be for your family if it hadn’t been for the war.

“You know you can talk to me right? I’m here for you too. It’s not just your burden to bear.” You said, trying to reassure her. Your mother gave you a deep nod and said,

”I Know Will… It was quite nice getting things out in the open a little… We should have more talks like this.”

You gave her a nod back. It was a little refreshing to know that your mother felt better having unloaded that little bit on you. You didn’t want to make her suffer all those things by herself anymore, Not if you could help it at least.

Your mother got up to light some candles in the living room as the sun went down, and the sounds of insects exploded throughout the forest. The buzzing and clicking of the night had become somewhat of a lullaby, It always managed to calm you down.

It had been a long day, Things ended up getting more emotional than you had wanted at home, but in the end you felt better because of it. You helped relieve some stress from your mother who desperately needed it, and you were really no worse for wear considering the beating you took on the way home today.

You decided it would be best if you went ahead and got as much sleep as you could for now. With a hug goodnight, you waved off your mother who sat in the somber living room, admiring the candles glow.
Your room wasn’t much to look at, just a dresser, closet and bed. You were exactly rolling around in the life of luxury, but things were exiting enough outside home. Your room served as a nice place to relax, with your window open to let in the sounds of nature and to smell the night air.

As exhausted as you were, it didn’t take long for you to drift to sleep. Your slumber was graced with pleasant dreams of better days for you and your family, A peaceful place that made you feel disappointed to be forced to wake up to the real world.
You awoke to the sun beaming through your window and birds singing their songs outside. You remembered that Kayla offered to ‘treat’ you to something nice today, but she didn’t exactly say when. You could only assume she meant sometime in the morning, So you hastily threw on what cloths you could find and quickly washed off your face. Your head was still sore, but the throbbing had subsided since you woke up. It was a good thing too, Since Kayla was sure to give you a brand new headache to enjoy by the end of the day.

After cleaning yourself off, you headed out into the hall and saw your mother’s door was still shut. She must have been sleeping in, since it wasn’t THAT early in the day yet. You walked outside your door and took a quick look around after your eyes adjusted to the sunlight.
You’re glad you didn’t have to deal with classes today, so you took a seat and waited for a while, soaking in the warm sunlight.

It didn’t take long for you to start getting bored, and wondering when the hell Kayla was going to show up. Hell, it even seemed like you were the only one awake at this hour, You couldn’t hear a peep from the towns direction.

>Head into town and look for Kayla.

While the first two are head into town, rolling to see whether kayla is our main focus, or being ready for a fight.

After relaxing for a while, you couldn’t help but think back to yesterday. Those three punks who had just up and run the moment Kayla showed up. They deserved a hell of a lot worse than that for what they did.. It made your blood boil thinking they might very well get away with it. You decided today was just as good as any for a little payback.
If you happened to come across Kayla you might let yourself be distracted, but you were going to get back at them today. You swore it to yourself.

Heading back inside you went to the kitchen and pulled out the sharpest knife you could find, slipping it into your belt.
You didn’t think you would need to use it, you were more than happy to pound them into the dirt with your bare hands, But encase they wanted to try something, you’d be ready. This wasn’t the first scrap you had gotten into, and it wouldn’t be the last. Luckily in your case, you didn’t find yourself having to work out or exercise. Thanks to being half human, your physique was naturally more muscular than your elven ‘pals’. It was more than enough to win you most of your brawls, but you weren’t half bad in a fist fight to begin with. You only ever found yourself face first in the dirt when outnumbered or facing that slick shit they pulled on you yesterday.

You wouldn’t be caught off guard today, you were looking for a fight and you felt your body itching to crash into their soft elf bodies. You marched on out of your house and bolted straight into town. As you suspected, the place was mostly empty. Everyone must have been sleeping in on the weekend. It was a good thing, less prying eyes and judgmental stares. It might even help you catch one of those pricks all by their lonesome, an ideal situation for you. Weaving in and out of homes and trees alike, you happened to find…

Things were pretty calm throughout town. After a while of running around the empty settlement, a few people started leaving their homes and going about their business. It felt like you had been wandering around for hours without a sign of either Kayla or the trio that made your day hell. You decided to cut through the town center and head back in the direction of your house. There was a chance Kayla had gone there by now and was waiting for you, so you figured you would at least check first.

As you made your way through the town, you noticed a man wearing the same garments as one of your aggressors from the other day exiting one of the nearby stores. You skulked around some trees and a few buildings to get a better look at the man’s face, and there was no mistaking it.
This guy was the asshole who swung that branch at you.

You quickly turned a corner and peered over it, attracting some strange looks from a few passerby’s. That mattered a lot less to you than being spotted by the prick you were following. He was completely oblivious to your presence, and you preferred it that way. Maybe you would surprise him with a little sneak attack of your own? Not that you even need too, He was all alone. Without his buddies to gang up on you, there was little chance of losing a straight up fight with the slim asshole.

You felt around your belt to make sure the knife was still in place, and it was. Just as secure as ever. That established, you continued to shadow your target from a distance. Waiting for an opportunity to confront him. He continued to make his way out from the town center. Was he taking some groceries to his house by chance? Wherever he was going, it was in the opposite direction of your home. The crowd had no thinned to near nonexistence, as you followed your prey and planned your method of attack.

>Confront him directly, shouting at him. Face him man to man.
