The carriage bumps and rattles as it pulls down the path. Looking out the front of the cart, you see two huge alchemical pack mules, most likely of horse stock, straining to drag the weight of the hefty sacks of salt and barrels of grain piled up next to you. But if you squint, in the distance, you can spot...

Atroke. Jewel of the Barle Desert. Even from miles away, you can see the spires of its magnificent central palace stretch into the clear blue sky. A land of new beginnings.

The carriage driver finally decides to talk after hours of silence.

"So... er... why're you going to Atroke, stranger?"

>Learn more about the alchemies
You recall a book you read describing the various alchemies and their practitioners. It had this to say on the various kinds of alchemy.
Red Alchemy
The Alchemy of Blood focuses on the creation of hybrids of various plants and animals. While Red Alchemists are potentially quite powerful, Red Alchemy is looked at as little more than an amusement of the royals.
White Alchemy
The most commonly practiced variety, White Alchemy is the practice of creating various potions and concotions for medical use. Advances in White alchemy have led to countless lives saved.
Black Alchemy
For every light, there must be darkness. The illegal practice of Black Alchemy focuses around the manufacture of specialty poisons and drugs of a more... recreational nature.

Ah, that's what it was. You reach down and pat the cage containing a sample of your work. It hisses, and you quickly draw your hand back.

"A fine practice," says the carriage driver. "What's your name, stranger?"

>You have gained Skill: Red Alchemy at 1.
>You have gained Alchemical Hybrid Sample.
>>
>>286976
I'll suggest Petrus or Elias, and leave our last name as a mystery.

Can we choose what kind of sample work we've kept with us?

You approach the city walls.
"Stop!" yells a guard, standing by the main gate.
The carriage bumps and rattles to a halt.
"I have nothing to declare," says the driver.
One of the guards hops into the back of the carriage and begins the slow procedure of searching the cart.
"Eight bags of salt.. five barrels of grain..." He picks up your sample. The cage bumps and shakes wildly, but he manages to hold on. "Alchemical Hybrid... looks like Avian stock..." He turns to you. "Please state your name for the record."

You hand him the letter from House... Ah, what was it again?
>>
>>287065
Naming prompts are so difficult.

House Hottinguer!
Or if that's too fancy; House Ingelger.
And if that, yet still, is too fancy; House Laval.
>>
>>287084
Laval works for me
>>
>>287084
House Laval! That's it.

The guard looks it over.
"Everything seems to be in order... sir."
He hops out of the cart and calls to the carriage driver.
"Carry on."
The gates slowly open, and the carriage driver pulls into Atroke. After a while, the alchemical pack mules pull to a halt.
"Looks like this is where our paths part."
You reach over and hand him a few centrae.
"Thank you."
You step out of the carriage and it pulls away, and you have a few seconds to appreciate the city that will be the backdrop for the next stage of your life.
It's a bit dirtier than you'd expect.

Merchants peddling various knicknacks line the streets, shouting various phrases in Taelish and Karad. The smell of roasting meat fills your lungs. Someone is chasing a stray dog.

So, what now?
>>
>>287128
Check out where were staying
>>
>>287128
Let's go to the palace, we're probably expected if we've been appointed service. If we can settle into our accommodations first, and maybe see what sort of equipment they have available, we can work on stuff from there.

How much Centrae do we have? That feels important.
>>
>>287141
You have 200 centrae with you.
>>
>>287128
You decide to figure out your living accomidations, and then go and see House Laval. Surely whatever they want of you can wait an hour or two.
>>
>>287156
Lets do that then!
>>
>>287156
You ask around and find a few inns close by. The closest one is called "the Scrawny Eagle." You navigate through the twists and turns of the streets and alleys of the city, before finding it in a tiny alleyway.

You walk inside, and are immediately assaulted by the smell of people smoking various illicit substances. Your sample doesn't seem to mind, though. A short, dark skinned woman is cleaning glasses at the other end of the room.

What now?
>>
>>287192
Well, check out a room, and ask the keeper if they've heard any strange rumors.

Gotta go OP, something something real life a shit. Good luck.
>>
>>287205
The woman at the counter doesn't even look up.
"Centrum a night, two for a bed. Food costs 3 pentae for a meal.

When you ask about any strange rumors, she says "Living in this godsdammned city is strange enough." She points to your sample. "That," she says, "sleeps on the floor."

What now?
>>
>>287192
>>287205
Supporting this.
>>
>>287228
Guess we'll go check in on the Job situation.
>>
>>287237
It's not exactly service with a smile, but it's cheap, and it'll do for now.

You decide to go and meet with House Laval.

You leave the Scrawny Eagle and head towards the center of the city. Somewhere, you must have gotten lost, because you find yourself at a dead end. A man in a guard's uniform steps out from around the corner.

"Excuse me, sir, have you paid your tithe?"

What now?
>>
>>287228
Wouldn't we get accommodation as part of our job?
>>
>>287257
'And what tithe are we talking about?'
>>
>>287261
House Laval isn't one to give something for nothing, so you should probably figure something out.
>>
>>287267
"Ah, I see you're new to the city. Lady Lorenta protects this district, and in return, she demands a tax from her citizens."
>>
>>287273
'That's very good of her but House Laval is my host and i'm sure there is an office for such collections they have tithed to if thats the case.'
>>
>>287278
I'm afraid you aren't exempt due to your host. Think of it as a charitable donation to the people of this district.
>>
>>287294
'Huh well I always loved charity...' Book off real fast like.
>>
>>287301
Run where? He has the only exit cornered.
>>
>>287308
Try and slid through his legs or something not tryna get robbed 2 minutes in the city!
>>
>>287311
You try and sprint away, but he sticks out a leg and you tumble onto the cobbled streets.
"I'm afraid if you will not give me your tithe, I have the authority to take it from you."
>>
>>287324
'Well seems like you're pretty quick. Good for protecting things..How much is this tithe good guard?'
>>
>>287335
He leans over and begins sawing at your coinpurse with a knife.
"It's 5 percent a month. I'll be taking the first year up front, so you don't have to worry about such things."
>>
>>287348
Snatch the coin purse from being sawed and yell robbery?
>>
>>287348
>55% of money is taken.

Well, that's quite considerate, means that none of your earnings are going to be taxed. So it punishes people who bring lots of money, and means that there is an emphasis on staying there for an entire year.

So rich visitors don't buy things out?

>>287360
maybe stab the dude in the back of the neck when he turns around?
>>
I have to move to mobile for a while, so this is me. I'll confirm from my computer.
>>
>>287376
Confirmed.
>>
>>287348
You open your mouth to yell, but he quickly moves his dagger to your throat.
"Why do you people always have to make this violent?"
>>
>>287393
'Muffled dying noises'
>>
>>287409
"And that's 120 centrae. Have a nice day."
He throws your considerably lighter coinpurse next to your head.

What now?
>>
>>287418
Continue trying to find the Lavels place. Guess ask around where that may be.
>>
>>287439
He bows. "Thank you for making Atroke a safer place to live." He walks off.

A few minutes later, you get up. Checking your wallet, you now have 80 centrae.

You stumble through the city, finally finding the huge brass gate to the Core District, the home of the Noble Houses of Atroke. A guard stands at the gate.

What now?
>>
>>287481
Back to original computer.
>>
>>287893
Back to mobile for a few days
>>
>>287893
Back to mobile for a few days.
>>
>>292955
Accidental repost, sorry.
>>
>>287481
Ask the guard how to find the Lavels
>>
>>295772
"House Laval is just up the way, past this gate. However, I'm afraid that I can't allow you to pass without some sort of identification."
