You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

You towel yourself off after a shower and change into some cleaner clothes. Although you emerged victorious from your sparring session with your siblings, your victory wasn't effortless, and, at Myrddin's suggestion, you decided to make yourself presentable.

"So, what did you want to talk about?" You ask your advisor.

"Business and pleasure." Myrddin hands you two elaborate invitation cards. "Some petty nobles are meeting at a teahouse to talk about trade, and there's a small ceremony at one of the temples. I thought you should attend. Alternatively, we need someone to oversee the palace's inventory of alchemical and enchanted supplies."

"Didn't we already do that?" You ask. "Twice?"

"Yes, but this time, Isla Owens and Nia Fisher will be in attendance, and I can arrange for Lady Rhonwen to be there as well," Myrddin explains. "This is a good chance for you to get to know them."

"For now, perhaps," you say, "but we'll need to come up with something better. There's only so many times we can go over the palace's stocks before it becomes thoroughly pointless. I assume the other invitations have similar business?"

"Seren auk Caunys and Ceri auk Haearnty will be discussing business at the teahouse," Myrddin says, "while our friends Delyth and Mererid auk Hirbraich will be at the temples."

The meeting with Isla, Nia and Rhonwen is pointless busywork, but you can just rush the work or ignore it entirely to focus on them. The ceremony with Delyth and Mererid isn't a major social function, but it does play to your reputation as the Victorious Prince. Finally, the business meeting with Seren and Ceri is less intimate, but it should have good business opportunities for you.

"I'll attend the meeting with Seren and Ceri," you say. "I'm in the mood to make a bit of coin."

"Very well, your highness." Myrddin disposes of the remaining invitation. "The celebrations won't really get started until Archduchess Aleksandra arrives, but these low-key meetings aren't bad either. At the very least, you should be able to get some news."

"Is there anything I should be concerned about?"

"There's always a few dozen things," Myrddin says, "but in this case, there's nothing urgent. Your uncle's men won't be in attendance, and while some of the nobles there will have questionable reputations, I doubt they'll try to con you. Even if they do, well, that's their poor judgment."

"I'll keep that in mind," you say. "Take care of things in the palace for me while I'm gone, will you?"

"Of course, your highness," Myrddin says. "I'll get in touch with your if there's an emergency."

Which, given your luck, there probably will be.

You travel to the teahouse with a light escort and give your guards some extra coins to relax in the area until you return. It's undisciplined, but you don't want them ruining the mood either.

The teahouse is closed, but the attendant allows you in you show her your invitation; you're not sure if she recognizes you or not. Inside, merchants and nobles are already pouring over contracts, exchanging pouches of coins, and negotiating with varying degrees of fervour and agitation.

Seren and Ceri are both conveniently sitting at the same table, although you can't hear what they're talking about. You could simply join them, eavesdrop on them, or simply sit alone and see who wants to approach you.

You surreptitiously move closer to Seren and Ceri so you can eavesdrop on their conversation. It's a little underhanded, but years of warfare have taught you that it's always best to be informed before walking into a battle.

"Unfortunately, I can't accept that offer." Seren sets her tea cup down with an air of finality. "I can't cede any of my family's lands to an unknown party, especially not our gardens."

"It's not a unreasonable deal," Ceri insists. "I'll pay for the garden's maintenance, and you'll be able to harvest herbs for free."

"Even so, I still can't accept," Seren says. "Besides, I hear you recently acquired some land near the capital. Can't you grow alchemical reagents there?"

"We've already started," Ceri says, "but our supply is still too small, and we don't have enough clients. It will take years before it can turn a significant profit, but if House Caunys' cooperation, we can solidify our reputation and greatly accelerate our plans."

"The benefits still aren't worth it for us."

It seems Ceri is trying to gain a foothold in the alchemy market. It's profitable, to be sure, but it's difficult to get into if you don't have any alchemists of your own, which House Haearnty doesn't. Cooperation is the most obvious option for them, but they can't offer House Caunys anything substantial.

>[Sovereign/1d8] You can just order Seren to cooperate.

Sovereign xp is tempting, but I don't actually want to do that to Seren.

I think Caunys should supply reagents until the acquired lands get into full production, and maybe we can supplement it on our own. That way no land is given, and they get to know each other better for further deals.

"I'm certain there's a way for House Caunys to profit as well."

Both women turn to you, surprised.

"Your highness!"

You calmly wave them down before they can stand; you're not here to spend time on ceremony. Instead, you sit at their table and Ceri pours you a cup of tea.

"I didn't know you were joining us today, your highness," Ceri says, "and I didn't know you were acquainted with Lady Seren."

"We did a bit of business in the past," you say. "I hope it turned out well for you?"

"We still have the usual problems with Olstren, but we're used to dealing with those," Seren says. "I'm pleased to see you again, your highness."

"Likewise," you say. "I hope you don't mind if I meddle a little?"

"Of course not, your highness," Seren says. "I'd be quite glad if you could provide us with your assistance."

"Indeed," Ceri adds. "I would feel quite confident if your highness deigned to share your wisdom with us."

"As I recall, the terrain and weather in House Caunys' lands is quite different," you say. "There should be some plants that can grow better near the capital than in your land. Perhaps you could make some sort of exchange? It would allow House Caunys to focus on herbs and plants that are more suited to its environment."

"That… yes, I suppose that is true," Seren says. "It shouldn't increase our profits slightly, and it most certainly would make our work easier."

"So long as I have the approval of a alchemist with a solid reputation, that's all I need," Ceri says. "If you can provide me with a list of what you need, I'll make the necessary arrangements."

"I'll need to speak to my father about it, but I don't expect any problems," Seren says. "However, he'll likely request that one of our own alchemists works on your gardens in order to ensure the quality of reagents."

"So long as that alchemist is willing to work for us on the side," Ceri says, "that won't be a problem."

"That can be arranged," Seren says, "if you're willing to cover the salary. A commission would be acceptable, obviously."

"Deal." Ceri smiles and shakes Seren's hand. "Thank you, your highness. I'm ashamed to admit I wouldn't have thought of this."

"You're entering a new market," you say, "so it's normal that you'll overlook a few things. The fact that you're making contacts shows you know what you're doing."

"I appreciate your praise, your highness," Ceri says. "It does bolster my confidence somewhat."

"Did you com here for any particular reason?" Seren asks. "If there's something we can help you with, please feel free to ask."

"My advisor recommended that I take a short break," you say. "I've been busy lately. I'd like to find some opportunities while I'm here, but I'm not in any particular hurry."

"There are a lot more people in Aurwain than usual," Ceri says. "That does mean more business, but it also means more strangers, which makes it difficult to know who can and can't be trusted."

"It is very different from the last time I was here," Seren says, "and people say it's still going to get busier. Personally, I find it quite exciting."

"That's because you don't have to live here," Ceri says. "As I said, there's more business, but there are still only so many hours in the day, and I still have to deal with my steady clients. I'll exploit the situation for as long as I can, but I hope it won't last too long."

"I find that's the best approach to take for most things," you say. "Seize opportunities when you find them, but strive for stability in the long-term. Chaos just gets tiring after a while."

"It certainly doesn't help manage our lands," Seren opines. "I shudder to think what would have happened if you hadn't intervened during that… incident."

A servant comes by, and you order another pot of hot tea and some snacks so you can have something to eat while you enjoy the conversation.

"There is something I've been wondering about, your highness," Ceri says. "The Crown Prince's wedding is a momentous occasion for the kingdom as a whole, but what do you think about it?"

>[Sovereign/1d12] "It's a time for our vassals to reaffirm their loyalty to the royal family and its future."

You calmly shrug and sip your cup of tea. "For the moment, I just want everyone to enjoy the glories and celebrations of the capital while the wedding lasts," you say. "It's certainly true that I have my own duties to take care of, but it's also for the sake Gwyrddarfordir's people. Since it's my older brother's wedding, I'd like for people to genuinely enjoy and celebrate it."

Ceri smiles behind her teacup. "Come to think of it, I heard you invited Esyllt to dinner the other day," she says. "She's been quite… bothered since then."

"I had some business with her, and I happened to have a semi-formal affair afterward, so I invited her along," you say. "We talked about a few things, but it was nothing too important."

"I must admit, I'm a little jealous," Seren says. "The time I spent in your highness' company was quite pleasant, even if certain parts of it were a little stressful."

"Oddly enough, I had a similar experience," Ceri says. "Not that I'm complaining, mind you. It is somewhat comforting to know that the royal family can handle these matters."

"Well, some of the royal family, at least," you say. It wouldn't do to give them false impressions, and a little bit of bragging won't hurt anyone. "Some of the work I do is a little unusual."

"That's still as admirable, if not moreso," Ceri says. "It's quite normal for people to do what's expected of them, but not many are willing to go even beyond that."

"I think that's a little unfair," Seren says. "We each of our own talents. It seems unreasonable to ask more of those who are doing their best already."

"Perhaps," Ceri says, "but I'm most concerned about those who aren't doing their best already."

The conversation grows quiet, leaving you to fill the silence.

"What about the two of you? What do you think of the royal family?"

"I want to see Prince Aled dead." Ceri immediately answers in a cold, cruel voice. "If his children can die along with him, even better."

Seren's face turns white and her head swivels between the two of you, but you're not the least bit perturbed by Ceri's answer.

"Is… isn't that a little bit much?"

"He ruined my family," Ceri says. "We'd still be ruined if his highness hadn't helped us."

"It was a small matter, and easily rectified." It also indirectly led you into a Rosean civil war, but they don't need to know about that. "What about you, Seren? You must have some complaints about how we rule the kingdom?"

"Not really," she says. "I'm quite satisfied with the way things are. There are occasional problems with Olstren, but you already know about this. I'm ashamed to admit it, but I'm not sure my family could have taken care of it without your help. I know it's part of our duties to guard the border and I accept that, but when I think about what would happen if we failed, I can't help but feel a little unsettled."

The royal family can't be everywhere, which is why you have vassals. Most of them only need to look out for the occasional bandit, but you have to admit the border lords have things harder than most. In fact, it's cost them quite a bit in the past, although things have been better in recent years.

"You can always ask me for help if you need it."

In truth, there isn't much you can do. Even if you send a few extra troops, House Caunys can't defend the entire border; the vast majority of it isn't part of their lands anyway. The best they can do in case of emergency is band together with their neighbours and ask for help.

"Thank you, your highness," Seren says. "That does make me feel a little better about things."

"Look on the bright side," Ceri says. "At least your family still has lands and holdings. It will likely take several generations before House Haernty owns a proper castle again."

"Don't focus on things too far into the future," you say. "You'll lose track of what's in front of you. For now, it's enough if you can acquire wealth and influence little by little."

"You're right, your highness," Ceri says, "but it's still irritating."

You can understand her displeasure. She was old enough to understand the loss when her family was robbed, and she's carried it with her for many years. Still, there's nothing you or Ceri can do about that of the moment.

You continue to talk with Seren and Ceri about how their respective businesses are going, and you provide them some advice - and take some advice of your own - whenever you can. You're in the middle of a discussion about the leather trade when a servant comes to fetch you.

"Your highness, someone named Myrddin called for you," the servant says. "He indicated it was an emergency."

With you, it's always an emergency of some sort.

"I'll need to excuse myself then." You stand and bow. "Ladies, I look forward to the pleasure of your company in the future."

"Likewise, your highness," Ceri says.

"I hope we can meet again soon, your highness," Seren says. "This was quite enjoyable."

The servant brings you outside, where Myrddin is waiting for you. He looks particularly grim.

"What is it?"

"I've received word of Archduchess Aleksandra's impending arrival," Myrddin says.

"That shouldn't be a cause for concern," you say. "Have they been attacked?"

"No, but it would go poorly for the attackers if they were," Myrddin says. "She and her retinue are fully armed, including even their horses."

That's… yes, that's definitely a problem. It would be a slap to the Crown's face if Rosean royalty rode into Aurwain looking like conquerors.

"Why haven't we heard about this sooner?"

"They were traveling normally until recently," Myrddin says. "They only armed themselves when they got closer to the capital. At their current rate, they'll be here tomorrow. If I had to guess, I'd say this is revenge for Meuric auk Sorryn's involvement with the recent Rosean war. She's trying to get back at Gwyrddarfordir for plotting against her."

It's certainly an understandable motive, and Roseans have always been belligerent. You could let her vent her frustrations, or you could try a more diplomatic approach before everything gets out of hand.

"We'll meet her before she reaches the capital," you say. "I wouldn't let her ride into Aurwain like a conqueror if we were married."

"Your highness, please." Myrddin has that insufferable smirk on his face again. "You're giving me inspiration."

"I don't even want to know what you're talking about," you say. "You say they'll be here tomorrow?"

"Before noon, most likely," Myrddin says. "We'll have to get up early if we want to catch them somewhere out of sight. There's no point if we just meet them outside the gate."

"We'll deal with that when we have to," you say. "Get Olwen and a few reliable soldiers. Take some of our equipment out of storage as well. I don't think Aleksandra's willing to start a war over a symbolic gesture, but we'll need to make a show of force if we want her to back down and respect us."

"It will be done, your highness."

You can't show weakness in front of Roseans, even if you do have some respect for Aleksandra's talents. This is Gwyrddarfordir, and while you don't put as much stock in pride as your siblings do, there are some lines that simply can't be crossed. Hospitality is sacred, but it's also reciprocal, and you can't allow your House to be slighted.

Hopefully, you'll be able to resolve this peacefully.

And that is all for today. Next thread will be Sunday June 26th at around 7PM EDT. With the Archduchess' arrival, everyone will finally be gathered together.

As always, if you have any questions, you can leave them here and I'll get around to checking them. Until next time, thanks for playing and goodnight.

Could we get some specifics on our nations history with Rosea? I know there's been some hostility in the past, but can we get the nitty-gritty?

God I want to see this.

Meirion and the others should bring their masks. So if the talks get ugly, as a last resort he can pull the mask from his bag and wink at Alexandra. That should defuse the situation. Although I hope it doesn't come this far and we can keep Gwain's identity a mystery.

Or just go wearing the mask

I bet Aleksandra's doing it on purpose to meet that mysterious masked man again

Also she might not get along with Sister, if the Not!-Wales vs Not!-Russia tensions still exist.
