"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

“I have just the cure for talkers. Full Company parade at first light tomorrow, no wait. Earlier than that, we can do it by torchlight until the sun comes out. You can do all that talking you did just then again and more. I’m sure everyone will be happy to get up nice and early to hear you.” The Captain’s smile reminds you of a wingshark. Which probably makes you the unsuspecting sea cow. “Perhaps a run afterwards?”

“The fault is mine, Captain.” You resist the urge to sink to your knees. For now. “I implore you, punish me not them.”

You can only imagine how that would go down with your peers. What have you done wrong? Nothing! A brisk jog in the chilly Sarsburg morning around the city walls is good for your health, that’s all! Make sure to wave to CPL Prince as we pass him by, it was his idea after all.

“You underestimate yourself, Corporal.” The Captain’s smile nearly reaches her piercing blue eyes. “You’re more popular than you imagine, both with the men and our employer.”

“I am?” This was news.

“You are.” ‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova settles back down, your imminent destruction seemingly forgotten for the moment. “70 brothers and sisters, all the way from the 4th Infantry to the 8th Kreigstrom, all owe you their lives. And the Necromancer? He expected it to take days to crack the wards guarding the Palace, with nothing and no one left of it. Instead you delivered it to him whole, and with half the Imperial family in tow to boot.”

“Oh aye?” To be perfectly honest you preferred your employer’s ignorance of your existence to his gratitude. Positive attention is still attention, after all.

“Indeed.” The Captain frowns for a moment. “He granted your request concerning the prisoners almost immediately, with a few exceptions.”

Guys I know what we have to do to keep the rest of the company from hating us We have to get the band back together
>>
Letting you lads know now, I've decided to implement some changes with the dice. It's still a d100 system, but with a much lower chance of crits.

Additionally, no 'best of 3' (except combat). All three rolls will count against the DC.

0 Success = Failure. You fail to acheive your goal, and suffer some harm/casualties in the process.
1 Success = The task is completed with some difficulty (minor loss of health or casualties)
2 Success = The task is completed with some skill (miniscule loss of health or casualties, further damage inflicted on enemy/task)
3 Success = The task is completed with minimal effort, no harm or casualties sustained. Potentially an additional boon.

100 = DISASTER
1 = MIRACLE

We'll give this a try for now, see if it doesn't mangle things horribly. Any complaints/suggestions?

I think we promised the dragon, he could kill the emperor, but I don't exactly remember.
>>
>>301107
Well, that should put the chance for crits at slightly lower than three percent. Still plenty in my opinion, but I like it better than before.

>All three rolls will count against the DC.
I assume that you mean the sum of successes, not of the rolls? Right?
And would you mind giving an approximation of DCs for average/easy/hard things? A rough span is enough, I'd just like to throw some numbers around.

"A few exceptions?" There's always something. It can never be nice and easy.

"Sarsburg has already been made an example of. Our employer gains nothing from the death of a few hundred more." The Captain says absently as she scans through several letters on her desk. As if the deaths of tens of thousands are... immaterial. "But the Heigelen Guard have been turned over to Superior Syka."

...fek.

"Which brings me to something I've been meaning to ask you." The Captain stops shuffling her papers to look at you, beckoning you closer. "You say Count Vermillio didn't know about the incursion, but Syka said our employer did. And our men.... my men, were caught up in the middle of it all."

"Answer me truthfully, Prince..." You find yourself leaning over the table as the Captain lowers her voice, eyes like flint. "Did our employer mean for us to get caught up in that fiasco?"

-----------------------

> "They planned it. And they planned for us to be there. No doubt. There's fek ups and then there's this."

> "We lost 100 brothers and sisters that night, Captain. And most of that was to the daemons, not the Neumunster. 'Accident' doesn't come into it."

> "It worked didn't it? It's not unusual for our employers to give less than a damn for our lives. Hell, this employer isn't even used to dealing with living pawns."

> "His sister Syka is the problem. I don't think our employer counted on an incursion so... grand. Or for his brother to be caught up in it. No, Captain. The fault lies with his crazy bitch sister."

Altough I'm rather sure that it was Syka's plan, though I've no idea wether or not the Necromancer himself was in on the plan, or even endorsed it.

"We lost 100 brothers and sisters that night, Captain. And most of that was to the daemons, not the Neumunster. 'Accident' doesn't come into it."

“My thoughts are the same.” The Captain grunts “The 4th, 5th and 6th Infantry are woefully understrength. As for the Kreigstrom… there’s barely enough for one platoon let alone two. I’m folding what’s left of the 8th into 7 until we have the numbers again.”

“The position of Sergeant is absent.” She flicks one of the papers towards you. “What do you think of Corporal ‘Bad Hand’ for the position?”

What are the pros and cons of being a sergeant?
>>
>>301138

> “I like the crazy bastard but he’s exactly that. A crazy bastard.” Put yourself forward for the position.

Perfect choice to lead in the fray but no so much in the day-to-day unit management

Besides,Sergeants get paid better right?
>>

>> “Bad Hand can be trusted. He’s everything a Sergeant should be.” Support Corporal Bad hand’s promotion.

Pro: More pay. An extra stripe on your collar. Holding rank over your fellow Corporals. If you have a decent LT, he'll pretty do what you suggest.

Con: No command of a squad. More responsibilities. More paperwork. More headaches. If you have a bad LT, they won't give you the time of day.
>>

“I like the crazy bastard but he’s exactly that. A crazy bastard.”

Sergeant is just one step below the officer corp, and who trust those fekkers? Any good NCO worth his salt knows nothing grand comes of their ilk. That said… at the end of the day you’re not sure if you can bring yourself to actually follow the kind of orders ‘Bad Hand’ would be likely give. You’re not sure you have the guts for that kind of heroism.

“Good.” The Captain dismisses your misgivings with an absent minded wave of her hand. “The Kreigstrom need his brand of bloody-mindedness. That brings me to the next order of business. The position of Lieutenant.”

“Isn’t Keys up for it?” You find yourself frowning.

“Rot set in it. He hasn’t got long.”

“Ah. Shame.” Not really. Pretentious prick.

“Which leaves the position of Lieutenant for 7th Platoon… vacant.”

“Hang on.” You don’t like where this is going.

“You have a sterling record, Prince. To name but a few; Far Sut Rus, Albani… and Ajiyimad.” The name of place drops into the abyssal silence like a stone.

“…yeah but… not me right?”

“Yes you… Lieutenant Prince.”

A commission. Command, responsibilities, authority, paperwork… This can’t be happening.

“I punish insubordination however it suits me.”

“I… I nearly died in the fighting! I always lead from the front!”

“How exemplary.” She says with a smirk.

“The… the men won’t respect someone promoted from the rank and file. I’ve been in the muck with them too long.”

“Who, the members from the 8th that you’ve never served with? Or the squad you’ve commanded for all of…one week?” Damn her.

“I’ll start drinking.”

“You haven’t already?”

“Why? …revenge?”

‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova scoffs. “Don’t be so self-centred, Lieutenant.” Don’t call me that “This about the Company. We don’t have many NCOs with your experience, and even fewer officers.”

You shut the door behind you, your new pins gripped shakily in your left hand. What just happened… Trooper ‘Kid’ stares quizzically at you. You don’t feel different. No sudden sense of… officeryness. No sudden tactical notions or grand ideas…

“Come Kid…”

DC is the same mostly (Heroic 20, Hard 40) etc. The difference being replacing the averaging with numbers of success. So statistically more often than not you'll succeed, but you'll risk casualties or harm without consistent luck.

Meanwhile, give some consideration as to the positions you need to flesh out in 7th Platoon, especially with what's left of 8th being merged into it.

>7th Platoon Sergeant: Bad Hand, or one of the surviving Lance-Corporals
>1st Squad CPL: Jack/Auntie/WhiteBitch/Hirstun/Murder
>2nd Squad CPL: Jack/Auntie/WhiteBitch/Hirstun/Murder
>3rd Squad CPL: Jack/Auntie/WhiteBitch/Hirstun/Murder

Other positions unique to an LT's staff.

>Aide-de-camp: Messenger and errand-runner
>Notary: Glorified secretary
>Knight-Taskmaster: Company's head Blackguard. Doubles as a bodyguard.
>2nd Lieutenant: What it says on the tin. Takes over if you die or close enough.

>>
>>301267
>7th Platoon Sergeant: Bad Hand
>1st Squad CPL: Auntie
>2nd Squad CPL: WhiteBitch
>3rd Squad CPL: Hirstun

Other positions unique to an LT's staff.
>Aide-de-camp: Kid.
This can go hand in hand with standard bearer, and is a good choice for a young kid.
>>Notary: Murder.
Let her temper solve problems we don't need to see
>>Knight-Taskmaster: Pietre Verdun.
He has the skill to insure the rest of them improve, and he can speak.
>>2nd Lieutenant: Jack.
He may hate us for it, but we need a reliable second in command, and he definitely is.

Other things we should do:
>Try to convince Asgorga to enlist with the company for a decade.

>Take Captain Elia-von-Harti as our personal prisoner, since she surrendered to us.
We'll either convince her to work for us and join the Black Company where else is she going to go, her empire has just been destroyed or ransom her off, in which case we should put a double portion towards keeping our remaining 30 troopers alive (better armor for all, more combat drill, etc)

“I need to see the squad… the most awful thing has happened.”

Kid spots your new pins, looks back up to you and shrugs. Clearly they don’t appreciate how utterly ruined your life is now. You almost ask them for a smoke, but refrain. There are quicker ways to kill yourself.

The walk back to the West Ballroom is quiet. You don’t feel much like talking and Kid can’t. You peer through the doorway, not particularly keen to confront your lads with this. Looks like they aren’t here except for the bedridden smile, but…

‘That’s T. Tu eeh. See, it looks like I but with a thingy on the top.’

You’re not sure that you’ve ever seen a stranger sight. The crippled orphan Jessica is currently sitting on Smile’s lap, his ruined face wrapped up like one of those Ajiyimad Mummies the Turncoats whisper about. Meanwhile the legless orphan, clearly not one to let a crippling get her down, is reading out of what appears to be a picture book. The Hungry Hungry Ashworm? Always a classic.

It’s hard to tell from here, but the Wildborn seems extremely uncomfortable. Probably struggling to confront his dismal literacy and the fact that other species have mini-versions of themselves at the same time.

------------------------------------

> “Come on Kid, let’s help the big guy out.” Blasted Neumunster folk. Can’t even leave them alone with your men without them getting all helpful and educational.

Their creeping grin suggests that Kid is starting to see the funny side of it, but their smile freezes when they look over your shoulder.

And as both of those beat the DC by over 20 there will be another boon down the road.

------------------------------------------

"Hmph. And I was so looking forward to having a new Revenant." Syka looks rather put out at your continued survival. "Truth be told I had every intention of turning you anyway after I found out that it was you who had my brother release those prisoners..."

You find your hand creeping steadily towards on of your daggers. If anything will work on this witch it's the Blessed Blade. Kid, bless their heart, goes so far as to nonchalantly take a step back from you, not wanting to get caught up in any magikal conflagration that might accompany your demise. It's that kind of knack for self-preservation that cements them as one of your lads.

"BUT! I've decided to forgive and forget, we all source Our Dark Lord in our own ways, yes?" The words are there but you look nothing like forgiven. "And at least I still have what's left of the Heigelen Guard to play with in the dungeon... I'm sure the Yellow Dogs have already gotten started. It's amazing what they're willing to do when they get the smell loot."

Syka does a sort of skip and dance down the hallway giggling crazily. "See you later, Corporal!"

"Yeah, that was a close one."

So really, you can’t pretend you don’t owe Captain Elia von Harti anything. And you’ve always had a thing for tough damsels in distress. Or causing you distress.

"We need to help the Saint." You say, looking down at Kid.

“…” Kid grins and pats the dagger at their side.

“You know, you and Mask must get along fantastically.”

An obscene gesture is your only response.
Yesterday the dungeons were packed, you couldn’t take a step without shoving into a Sarsburg prisoner or their skeletal jailers. Now, nothing. Or nearly nothing. Further up echoe the distinct sounds of flesh on flesh. The meaty slaps, the animal grunting and of course, the almost tired screams. Funny, how torture can sound so much like fekking.

Streaks of blood, teeth and other stains you can’t quite identify are scattered throughout the dimly-lit room. In one corner lies a pile of fresh corpses, opposite them several limp figures hang from the wall in chains watching the interrogation with blankstares, knowing they’ll soon be next.

2 Cultists. Old men, even with the robes and talismans they look more like decrepit tutors than crazed fanatics. They’re both huddled over a table with odd instruments, looking up occasionally at the interrogation and frantically taking notes.

3 Yellow Dogs. The skinny one is holding up the Heigelen Guard, looks like the same one Captain Elia talked to at the side entrance. Brendan? Another Yellow Dog is sitting in the corner by the corpses, the mask not quite hiding the smile in his bright blue eyes. The last one, a strikingly ugly fellow with a plethora of pock marks, is beating the unfortunate Palace Guard, his questions punctuated with each strike of his ham-like fists. Seems they’ve given up on taking fingers and using brands. That’s the problem with these Yellow Dogs. No creativity.

‘Oi.’ Blue eyes notices you and Kid first, his eyes narrowing and his hand dropping to his side in expectation. The ugly one pauses to fix you with a glare that you suppose is meant to be intimidating, drawing himself up.

You nod at one of the figures chained to the wall. ‘I’m here for her.’

‘That so?’ The ugly one sneers, giving you a clear few of his poor dentistry.

‘Reckon she’s what knows where that hidden gold is then, aint she?’ The scrawny one shoves Brendan’s head down, his skull hitting the stone floor with a sharp crack.

Kid's hand had nonchalantly strayed to the hilt of their dagger. Maybe they weren't too keen to tackle Syka head on, but they've got your back here.

The dragon has agreed to tag along with your lot if he gets to be the one to eat the Emperor.

Your Captain has indicated that, while your employer might have liked the idea of a ransom or hostage, a dragon on your side is just as good. Besides, how are they supposed to lord over Neumunster (or what's left of it) while the rightful ruler still lives?

Ugly and Scrawny stop up short when you pull out your Ajiyimad Pistol. Gunpowder weapons aren't common, but they're prevalent enough to be recognised by this lot.

Blue Eyes on the other hand, doesn't seem perturbed His smiling eyes never leaving you or showing a trace of fear. You don't like that. So you switch your aim over to him and pull the trigger.

BLAM

The shot is painfully loud in the confined space. Followed by the thud of Blue Eye's body and the clatter of the crossbow he was slowly reaching for. Then silence, except for the scribbling of the old cultists who are (apparently) still taking notes.

"Any other heroes?" You ask Ugly and Scrawny with a growl.

The two shake their heads numbly, backing off with their hands raised. Trooper Kid frisks Blue Eyes disappointed to find no coin but they do find the keys to Saint Elia's shackles.

She has looked better. Split lip, a few bruises and a missing ring finger on her right hand, sawn off at the second knuckle. But it could be worse. Much worse. Trooper Kid keeps an eye on the Yellow Dogs as you bundle up her limp form and prepare to carry her.

"Please..." she whispers through a bloody mouth.

The remaining shackled Heigelen Guard look at you with something approaching hope. You expect her to beg for their lives... or go on about duty. Or maybe vengeance on the ones who hurt her...

"...I don't want to die down here. I just... please, I want to live..."

Of course. We all do, when it comes down to it.

“You might not think so when you learn of the price for your survival, for now sleep and try to forget it.”

Captain Elia von Harti doesn’t say a word as you leave the dungeon, Kid jabbing threateningly with their dagger to ensure Scrawny and Ugly don’t follow you. By the time you make it back to the West Ballroom she’s sound asleep. Or unconscious.

“Ah, Kid-Trooper! Sadiq-Corporal!” Trooper Belhamun beams at you and Kid as you enter. Looks like the rest of the squad has shown up, given the glistening sweat and the ravenous way they’re digging into dinner they must have been training or exercising outside.

“thinally.” Smiles lisps from under his bandages, Jenny fast asleep on his lap.

“Hey look, the last one he rescued lost her legs but this one only lost a finger.” Trooper Schuster’s burn scar makes its usual crinkle between chewing when one of her jokes are particularily unfunny. “Looks like the boss is getting better at the whole ‘Hero’ business.”

“Arr matey… I know we aint in Syka’s best o’ books right now, aye?” Trooper Durvano, like you, doesn’t see the funny side. “But how do you suppose harbouring a Heigelen stowaway amongst us is going to go down with her?”

“I suppose, when she wakes up, she’ll have to make a choice.” A choice between the Black Company and Syka getting her claws into her again, and what choice is that?

“There’s something else isn’t there?” Lance-Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus is eyeing you.

“Eh? [b*]munch munch*[/b]Something else? What is it boss?” Schuster pesters you with her mouth full.

Trooper Kid shows them squad the officer pins. They’re getting good, you don’t even remember them filching them out of your pocket.

“I’ve uh… been um… promoted. To Lieutenant.”

Mask actually tilts his head. That’s the most emotion you’ve ever seen him express. A shocked silence drops between you and the squad like a cadaver. Pietre Verdun is the first to speak up, weighing his words like your promotion is an especially troubling math’s question.
“But if you are now an officer, however am I to challenge you and recover my besmirched honour?”
“Sadiq-Lootennyant? Emir-Lootennyant? …Emir-Corporal?” Belhamun is clearly struggling with the ranking system of the Company.
“Iittthh?” A bemused rasp from Smiles.
“I’m so sorry.” Lancer ‘Jack’ says solemnly, clasping a consoling hand on your shoulder. At last, someone who understands! An NCO who can sympathize!
“Thanks, it’s been-“
“ Bad Hand is going to shit.”
“I beg your pardon?”
“When he hears.” Jack leans in with the most mocking of grins. “Bad Hand. Is going. To shit.”
Suddenly you find yourself lifted up between the legs by the laughing Schuster and Durvano, spouting out plans
“Let’s a ceremony! Big Cake, lots of alcohol! Nissar’s party tricks!” The ex-sabari is just full of ideas with you plopped up on one his shoulders.
“Break the boss in with a bucks night!” Schuster laughs, eliciting a most undignified yelp from you by poking a finger into the crack of your pants “Dun dundundun dun dundundun.”

This is a fairly big decision, it will shape the theme of future threads for a while to come. I’ll leave this open for a while and come back in several hours, likely drunk as shit or hungover as fek, and call it then. In the meantime, please ask any and all questions about the situation, realms, characters or whatever else has you curious.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

“No! Absolutely not!” You consider making a grab for one of your daggers and slitting your wrists. Just give up. Halfway between despondent and furious you gripe at your lads. “Just put the fekking pins on already.”

Schuster can’t stop giggling as she tries to place them on your collar, accidentally pricking you with the needle and nearly losing them down your shirt between her undignified snorts.

“Gods be good, matey, give em here.” Durvano pauses, looking down at the pins a calculating stare. “These real gold?”

“Ugh, imbecile!” Knight-of-the-Line Verdun neatly tacks your officer pins onto your collar, looking you in the eyes as he unruffles your uniform. “Congratulations… Sir.”

“I guess 7th and 8th Platoon will be seeing some changes…” Lancer ‘Jack’ strokes his beard thoughtfully.

“Yes, and there won’t be much time to adjust to it all in.” You remark wistfully,Dark Father you need a shave, pulling out the written orders Captain ‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova gave you. “We have our new marching orders.”

Everyone looks at you, shiny new pins forgotten. Their expressions range from mildly curios to intensely interested. You have the squad’s full attention.

A fairly short thread by my standards, and for that I apologise. Next week we'll see a new a chapter of the Campaign, the Company marches North with the Necromancer to bring the numerous provinces of the Neumunster Empire to heel.

Sarsburg, the seat of Imperial power, is a wasteland and the Emperor (as far as you know) is dragon food. Savenheim to the South-East has already declared for your employer out of fear, while Wissenburg remains tactfully silent on its intentions. But the other provinces are in an uproar, torn between outrage and mad panic at the undead hordes spilling into their fertile, green lands. The reaction is the same, refugees flow one way and raw green recruits march the other. Meanwhile, the remnants from Weylan river regroup and every single Imperial Regiment has been recalled from the tumultuous borders of Chevallise, Albani and Helenwood. Every single one.

Should they assemble, it would surely be the greatest gathering of free men since the time of Skarling Kingbreaker and the Age of Heroes. The borders of the Free Alliance weaken, and your employer's rivals, the Warlord and the Wild King, will not hesitate to act on it...

Mask can't talk. He's incapable of filling the roll, remember? A leader needs to be able to give orders, and that's why Pietre is better suited.
Besides, you wrote that Mask was the worse swordsman, he won because of his unnatural nature, which works fine for him, but isn't how we want our mortal troops fighting.
Technically, he should fall under the same organization slot as the dragon, not as a knight

He's part of the Blackguard Caste, and he beat Pietre in front of your own eyes. That and there's two more Blackguards from the left-overs of 8th that haven't been introduced yet.
