Currently…
Your vision swims red. And you feel hot. The throbbing in your head worsens and you find yourself on the floor. A mirror. You suddenly feel the need for one and grasp the ground around you. Your hand manages to find your Pokedex, and you use the black screen to get a distorted look at your face. There’s a tinge to your eyes that’s quickly fading. With it goes the erratic and rushed heartbeat, the oppressive heat, and some of the throbbing.

You lay there, unsure for how long you stare at the void where the ceiling should be. Your breathing calms down and your thoughts start returning to you sluggishly. You have a mission – there’s something you came here for. An item perhaps?

You try to get up, but stop when pain starts erupting from your midsection. You slowly lift your head to get a good look at yourself and you see something odd. A rock juts out of your gut. It’s not terribly long, sticking out maybe an inch or so. That’s gonna be a problem, you think. Your first instinct is to touch the rock, but an attempt to pull makes you shudder with pain, and the shudder just doubles what’s already there.

You breathe in deeply, then let it out.

You grasp the rock firmly, then pull it out. Your vision begins dulling, white edges threatening to plunge you back into a state of unconsciousness. You feel every beat of your heart, and each beat sends an extra dose of pain that radiates throughout. You feel warmth where the rock was, and dimly you think you might bleed out. Despite the pain, you reach for your bag. It’s too far away, a hair’s breadth from your fingers, until something pushes it towards you. You reach inside and find the comforting feeling of cotton blended with other materials. You bring the shirt to your wound and apply pressure.

“H-help me get up,” you say, and you feel two hard bodies try their best to assist you. It’s a struggle and you try to assist them as best as possible. Finally, you’re put into a sitting position with the cavern wall supporting your back. It takes a while, but you think the wound has stopped bleeding, or it at least slowed down.

You look to your left and see an orange weasel lying unconscious. Did you do that?

“Hey guys, can you carry, um, that pokemon to the water?” You speak softly, your throat suddenly burning. You’re parched. Your bag was thankfully carried to you, and you keep rations in there for situations such as these. You avoid the food for now and concentrate on the bottle of water. It’s warm but it’ll have to do.

You see your Larvitar carefully place the orange weasel on Vulcan’s back, and they carry it to the beach. They place it there, then back away quickly. You see a blue serpentine Pokemon approach, and wrap itself around the weasel. You find yourself holding the pokedex upright and briefly wonder when that became an automatic process. It doesn’t take long for the Pokedex to tell you that’s a Dratini, but when you look back to the water, both Pokemon are gone.

Yours return to your side, worry etched all over their faces. You want to ask them what happened but the words don’t come out. Vulcan leaves and Gojira cuddles up next to you. You look over him, and see that he still has wounds, though they slowly close. The cracks on his skin remind you of the cracked foundation of your old house. The one you and your mom used to live in before you moved Serenecity.

Vulcan returns, and in his mouth he carries a rusty old stick. You see a thin line connect to the reel. It’s a fishing rod. This must be why you’re here. No wait. You put your pokedex away and grab your phone. You’re using your left hand? A quick inspection of your right hand reveals a cut. Oh, right. You were in a battle. You turn on your Pokegear and see the faces of your friends.

Wait.

You’re here for their sake. Well fuck. You…

It’s a struggle to get up. You don’t want to make your wound any worse, and you don’t think you can stand up on your own. The fishing rod sits there, inviting you to use it, but you think it’s too fragile. Breakable. Instead you press a button, and like a police baton it retracts, allowing for easy storage.

A fall could reopen your wound. No, it takes a while, and you rely on the cavern wall handholds a little too liberally but you’re finally able to stand up. The wall makes a great support, and you have one arm holding your spare shirt to your guts. You derive some comfort from holding the cloth to your wound; it makes you wonder if you’ll ever cuddle with a cute girl before you die.

You wish your pokemon were taller. Or rideable. That’d be very useful right now. You make your way back to the entrance of the lake. It’s still a beautiful sight, with the glowing fungus adding to its charm. You remember seeing a campsite nearby, and that means there might be people or something useful.

The trek there is slow, but your pokemon don’t seem to mind. Gojira stays close to you but he doesn’t cling to you. In fact, he seems vigilant, moving rocks away from your path to ensure that you don’t fall. Vulcan stays a few feet away, watching for any signs of an attack. You feel your heart well up a little. They are the ones keeping you safe.

The campsite is little more than tent canvas on the floor, ashes marking where a fire was started, and several old beer bottles, the glass shattered and scattered around. You set your pokemon to search around the area. Vulcan manages to find a potion buried in the dirt, but the real impressive stunt is Gojira finding a small medkit. When you open it up, you find some small bandages and several tablets. It’s a little hard to see here, with the lack of fungus in the general area. You end up using your pokedex as a small light force, again regretting the lack of flashlight. A part of you thinks someone handed one to you, but it’s not in your bag, so you probably lost it.

Vulcan also hands you a stick. You find it makes a good walking cane.

(1/2)

Some of the pills are for infections and others are for pain. You take a few of each and gulp them down as best as you can with your remaining supply of water. At least your bag will be marginally less heavy. You place a bandaid on the cut on your right hand.

Close to the fire you notice a glint – some small shiny object. You direct Gojira to pick it up, and he holds it up. You bend down as much as you dare and you’re able to appraise the object. It’s an earring – no, it’s Katie’s earring! You pocket it. Looks like they accidently left clues for you to follow. You see what looks like footsteps in the dirt, and you suppose you ought to follow.

The trail goes cold several times, but all it takes is a few more paces forward to follow. Halfway across the lake, you find another trail going over the footprint. Some kind of webbed foot smudging the more recognizable shoe prints. Did something follow them?

Somewhere down the line you lose the trail for a good few yards. When you find it again, there’s only the footprints. Huh. Your companions must’ve stopped the threat somehow. It doesn’t take you long to find another opening, but you notice this one’s different. The fungus covers the opening, but in the tunnel ahead, the fungus is placed on the walls in an orderly fashion, as if they were lamps in some weird underground motel. You also see occasional opening to the left and right.

Your pokedex beeps a few times. You check on it but it gives you no indication of change. You shrug and start moving deeper into the tunnel when you’re interrupted by another beep. This time, there’s text:

[Hey idiot, STOP where you are. There’s a trap ahead that got to us.]

Oh hey! That must be Kori.

Bewildered and relieved, you text the first thing that comes to mind: “Oh man, am I happy to hear from you guys.” You looks around curiously, noting that there’s nothing but the tunnel forward. “Can you see me?” You add. It takes a few moments for your pokedex to beep again.

[What? No. We walked straight through the tunnel and activated a pitfall trap. Now we’re trapped in the furthest room.]

Looks like they needed rescue after all. “So what do you want me to do about it? I almost got my ass handed to me by wild pokemon.” Again, the familiar beep.

[Are you okay? –Katie]

“Yeah. What are we up against,” you text. You wonder what kind of people live down here.

[Ghost pokemon]

That was the whole reply. You wonder if the back and forth messaging would alert their captors to something. You wait awhile but there’s no other message. Ghost pokemon… How are you supposed to fight that? You…

There’s some ladies who need rescuing, and it looks like you’re the guy to do it. Ghost types… You know they’re the only types with two immunities, and that’s to normal and fighting attacks. Thankfully you don’t have many of those. The paths in front of you bring forth a memory of those interactive word adventure games. You were never sure what the right answer was and you sure as hell aren’t sure here. What did Detective Jacques say? “Right is right.” You shrug then limp to the right opening.

You find yourself in a hallway. Ahead of you, you see a few stalactite arranged like a fancy chandelier. Some rock juts out of the right wall, mimicking a table, and there’s even glowing fungus in what looks like a dirt vase? The floor in the center of the hallway is smooth, reminding you of a red carpet? All in all, this hallway feels eerily like a hotel, and at the far side is a crude stone door. Who even built all of this?

You…

Yeah, no. You’re bowing out. You’ve seen The Shining and you’re not having any part of this. You turn around and follow the singing. It’s a slow process, but eventually you get near the left opening. Before entering, you decide to use a potion on Gojira, making sure he’s in tip top shape. The cracks are still there, but they appear shrinked. Still, it’s probably best that Gojira doesn’t take any more damage. You look down at your mons and for the most part have stayed in their protective state. They don’t show any indication that the singing bothers them nor do they seem in high alert. There’s no growling or barking.

You see what looks like a bar. A smooth stone counter lies on the opposite wall with what looks like stone shelves. There are different shaped rocks that probably work as chairs. You see what looks like a table with similar rock chairs around it, and part of the room is raised up; that section looks like a stage. On top of it, you see a girl in a plain white dress. She’s singing some kind of lullaby but you can’t make out the words. Her light brown hair covers her face.

The way the fungus light plays with the scene makes her look like a young, malevolent witch out to get your soul. For all you know, that could be true.

Near the stage you can see another opening. All-in-all the room is small, and your pokemon aren’t indicating that you’re in danger. They don’t look up at the lady, just at you and occasionally at the area around them. You find that strange, but then again, everything around here is a little strange.

You…

You think about trying the unnatural hotel room but decide against it. You’ll creepy singer girl over that. Now, just what should you do? There’s the option of just walking past her, but you don’t think that will be feasible. It’s too easy.

Instead, you opt to get her attention. The tune drones on, and you actually find it kind of relaxing. You wave a hand out but that doesn’t work. M-maybe you should try talking to her? You clear your throat, and the singing stops. The silence that follows is unnerving, and so is the fact that the girl hasn’t moved.

“Um, hi,” you say. The girl turns to face you. It’s only when she notices you that your pokemon start growling. It’s the kind of deep growl that comes from the back of the throat. It’s a primal message, and it’s very clear: stay away or I will hurt you.

You start hearing jeers from around the room, and translucent images of men appear around the room. You see a bartender cleaning a glass cup with some cloth. A cowboy and businessman sit at the bar. A biker and chef sit at the table; and all five of these individuals are booing at the singer. Your pokemon don’t stop growling.

The singer fades and reveals a dark blue-ish green, ghost-like pokemon. It has no visible arms or legs, and the appendages of its body look like a dress. It has several red gems around its neck that look like a necklace, and it has what appears to be flowing hair with lilac colored tips. Your pokedex calls it a Misdreavus. It fades back into the singer, steps to the side, and indicates the stage with her arms.

The singer wants you to sing? You…

You cautiously approach the stage. You signal for your pokemon to wait there by the entrance. If a riot happens, you can serve as a distraction while your pokemon attack them from behind. Still, you were never a big fan of the spotlight. Or at least, not one where you could see your audience.

There aren’t any stairs on the stage, so it takes you a while to get on. At least the booing stopped while the crowd bores into you with their gaze. You go the spot the ghost pokemon/singer indicated and you turn to face the crowd. They look at you, some with suspicion and others with intrigue. There’s no piano or guitar or anything, so you turn to one of the few songs you know by heart.

Your voice is shaky and your throat feels dry as you let out a few notes of your favorite detective theme song. Your heart is pounding in your chest, and the wound in your gut retaliates with some pain. You feel nauseous and you’re barely aware of the words you’re singing. It doesn’t take long for the crowd to start jeering; you feel a little saddened, maybe a little disappointed. Honestly, what were you expecting?

The ghost girl begins singing again, and the crowd grows silent. You step away, and she takes your spot on center stage. You feel a momentary relief and some gratitude. Now what?

This tune is different. More upbeat, less lulling lullaby. You make your retreat as quickly as you dare, which is to say pretty fucking slow, but you do your best to not upset the wound on your belly. You find yourself near the backroom exit; a quick inspection shows that the crowd is looking at the singer and she’s looking at you. Sure, you embarrassed yourself on stage, but she kind of wanted you there?

You find a seat next to the biker guy, but he doesn’t pay any attention to you. Which ghost pokemon is he? You wonder. The song increases in tempo, and you see the ghostly singer smile as she sings. The whole place seems a little livelier, with the translucent figures becoming a little more solid. Some of them move their heads left and right in sync with the song. You smile back, content to sit back and relax. Kori and Katie are already trapped; they can wait a few more minutes.

The ghost girl goes for two more songs before she stops and bows down. The crowd cheers and you make sure to clap your hands politely. Besides the weirdness of this place and the fact that they’re all a bunch of ghosts, you enjoyed the respite. By this time, Vulcan and Gojira sit by your feet, still looking around cautiously.

You see the figures around you talk, but all you hear are whispers. It’s odd, but you’re kind of getting used to odd. The ghost girl goes to the back exit, and you see her signal for you to follow.

>Sure, she seems friendly enough.
>Nah, you have a hotel room calling your name.

You shrug; there’s no malicious intent as far as you’re aware. Then again, that could be part of her trap. You tell your pokemon to be ready, then casually limp after the singer. Unlike the hotel looking hallway or the bar, this tunnel is bare. The only thing that is unusual here is the way the fungus is arranged like lamps, a clump every meter or so.

The singer sheds her form, revealing the Misdreavus underneath. She waits at a juncture that could turn forward, left, or right, and moves left. You have Gojira mark which area you took, as you follow the ghost pokemon down the labyrinth of hallways.

You’re not really sure where you are by the time you get to what appears to be a dead-end. To you, it seemed like you were just going in circles. She sinks into a wall and you’re left wondering if you fell for a trap. Working on the hunch that this pokemon is friendly, you search the walls for any irregularities. You find a strange indentions; it looks like a button. You press it, and a stone door opens.

You peek into the next room. The first thing you see is a throne sitting on a slightly raised platform. There is a regal looking woman there with a purple dress. You see a crown on her head. Stalactites cover the ceiling and you see some stalagmites here and there. The singer is off to the side along with what look like a few soldiers. Some are dressed in camouflage holding what look tranquilizer guns while others don armor with swords at their hips.

To the right is a cage, crudely crafted into the wall. The stone bars look rough, and you’re not sure how your companions got in there; there appears to be no door. You see Katie brushing her platinum blonde hair, and your heart skips a beat. She’s safe! Kori for her part is sitting cross-legged on the floor, meditating. She opens one eye, and you two make eye contact. Your heart skips another beat, but for a different purpose.

Kori is aware of your presence, but as far as you’re aware, you did nothing to give yourself away. The stone door that opened up was silent, and it is located in a darker part of the room. Even the queen didn’t notice you. Maybe your theory about Kori being psychic is correct? You see a shift; Kori raises one of her hands slightly and you see the familiar shape of a Revive. It looks like she has a plan and she wants you to play distraction.

Damn son.

>>

Interesting. You never thought you’d meet a queen. Do those still even exist? There’s one there in front of you, but you’re 95% sure she’s a ghost. An idea forms in your mind and you’re kind of excited and kind of scared by the prospect.

“Hey Gojira, do me a favor. I need you to…” You start whispering your plan to the little green reptilian. He starts digging a hole underground, and you’re left wondering how you’re going to pull this off. You decide to cannibalize your spare pants. You attempt to make some kind of scarf or cape or something but give up. Fortunately, Gojira appears, and he has one of Katie’s sweaters. You tie it around your neck and pretend it’s a tiny cape. Next, Gojira produces a stone crown. There’s a necklace and some earrings dangling off it.

It’ll have to do.

You put your makeshift crown on, ready yourself, then walk out. Your pokemon flank you on either side, trying to look as regal as possible. You hold your head up high and you only stop when you’re a respectful distance away. You bow down and say, “Greetings Majesty.” The crown almost falls off your head, but you manage to stop it from falling in time. You wait a little bit then look up. The queen motions for you to stand upright, and you obey.

“I am Prince Greyson, heir apparent from the overworld kingdom of Chante, and I come on a quest to establish relations with the beauteous and wise queen.” The queen looks pleased; it seems she likes being complimented. Now you’ll see if you can tug some heartstrings. “There is another reason I came: the king humbly requests your aid. You see, our kingdom has many troubles. The wildlife has turned more violent, the kingdom of Invictus and others like it besiege us, and our crops were unplentiful this year. I’m afraid much of it was burned down by invading forces. Women and children were slaughtered, and we do what we can to aid the common folk.” She gives you a sympathetic look, so you continue. “We heard rumors of an underground kingdom. I followed those rumors and came to see your splendid kingdom. Please! Gift me with your knowledge. How came it to pass that you were so successful?” You kneel, though it physically pains you to do so. Your voice cracks there at the end too, and you never knew you could act this well.

(1/2)
>>
You see the ghost singer put both hands to her mouth. She never knew you were so important and so burdened! You see her step forward, perhaps some instinct to comfort you, but the queen stops her. She stands up, and for a moment the illusion falters. Instead you see a purple, ghost-like pokemon with what looks like a witch hat on her head. Red gems around the neck remind you of Misdreavus. An evolution perhaps? Then the illusion returns. You see the queen’s mouth move as if she were speaking, but you hear nothing. Instead, you act like you just heard an obvious, awe striking solution; something simple yet brilliant, like you’re angry at yourself for not thinking of it.

Then suddenly, the illusion is broken, and you feel strong malicious intent. Deadly. The pokemon before you has a very strong aura. “Now Alex!” You hear. You turn to the right and see Kori and Katie standing near the stone bars. A blue, bipedal duck-like pokemon stands in front of her. There is a small red gem on its forehead and you think you recognize those webbed feet. Is that the creature that attacked your companions near the lake?

The soldiers move to stand behind the queen. They transform into candle-like pokemon and ghosts with masks on their face. You also note a single Gastly. On your side, you have your two pokemon, Kori’s pokemon, and it seems a couple of the Queen’s court have joined your side, the ghost singer included.

“I’ll help too!” Katie says, and she sends out an Igglybuff. You remember helping raise a few of those.

You take out your pokedex and watch the queen pokemon flinch. You feel a smile flick across your face. Despite the dangerous situation, you feel like you have the advantage here. Some of her subjects clearly betrayed her, and your companions are helping you out. The Pokedex only takes a few seconds to analyze your opponents, but you manage to get what you wanted. The queen is a pokemon called Mismagius, and her soldiers are comprised of two Litwick, one Yamask, and one Gastly. Some of her Pokemon are weak to ground type attacks, but it looks like the Gastly and Mismagius are immune.

You move your pokedex to face the your ghost allies and watch them flinch. You wince internally, hoping you didn’t spook them. The only one to not flinch is the ghost singer, and that seems to calm your other allies. It looks like you have a Misdreavus, Duskull, and Phantump on your side.

The last pokemon you analyze is Kori’s, and you find that it’s called a Golduck. It also has a similar power level to the queen, though your pokedex tells you that this Golduck is at yellow health. It might be able to distract the queen while you focus on her forces. You could always just concentrate all your fire on the queen. If she goes down, you’ll win this. Still, you don’t want your forces to get pelted down by her minions.

You sense the tension between the groups growing. This ceasefire isn’t going to last long. You order your ghost allies to:
>Go on the defensive. Distract the queen’s guards.
>Go on the offensive. Hit the guards with everything they have.
>Go on the offensive, but aim for the queen (might not work).
>Play support. Aid your side.

You see the other side start to stir. The queen starts to move forward, signaling the start of the battle. “Attack!” You command, pointing forward. You see your ghost allies moving forward to meet her guards, and blobs of dark fire, strange black rays, and other such attacks start flying around.

The queen tries to bulrush you, but Kori’s Golduck hits it with some kind of headbutt attack; you think you saw a thin blue aura momentarily surround the duck pokemon’s head. Seeing the queen momentarily abated, you turn to command your Pokemon. Vulcan is already charging forward to attack the opponents. You see his claws start to shine and see him tear into his opponents. Your pokedex registers the new attack as Metal Claw.

“Gojira, expand those tunnels then hinder the opponent,” you say, and your loyal pokemon disappears beneath the earth. You look around eagerly, to give more commands.

Someone yells, “Watch out!” And you duck just in time to avoid a ball of darkness and shadows from hitting you. You look up to see the queen charging another one; and you know you can’t move too quickly without seriously upsetting your wound. She must’ve seen the way you limped to her at court, and now it looks like she’s determined to take you down. Luckily, you serve as an excellent distraction. The Golduck manages to land another odd headbutt.

You feel the gravity in the area grow stronger and find yourself on your knees. It means you can’t dodge any moves now, but your opponents are susceptible to ground based attacks. Now’s your chance.

>What’s the strategy?
>>
Less open-ended options:
>Have Gojira aim for the queen instead of messing with her subjects.

You find it a tad difficult to tell the ghost pokemon apart. You catch a glimpse of Misdreavus using what you can only assume is Dark Pulse to hurt multiple enemies around it; and you think you see the Phantump shooting Leech Seed left and right, although there’s traces of fire on the young ghost pokemon’s bark skin. Vulcan slashes at a Gastly, and the Gastly is hit by a dark ray before it can retaliate.

As for you, the idea of being out in the open and vulnerable is inexcusable. “Gojira, change directions! I want you to harass the leader! Vulcan, attack the queen then come to my side!” Another ball of darkness and shadow passes over you, and while you hate being in the line of fire, a part of you admits that you serve as a great distraction while they were the queen down.

You hear Katie yell out, “Use helping hand on Alex’s pokemon!” You suppose she’s playing support, and the enhanced gravity must be her work. Gojira pops up underneath the Mismagius, and you can see him bite her to keep her from floating away. Vulcan sends a quick mud slap her way before standing in front of you. You see it hit her eyes, and the momentary blindness works to Kori’s advantage. She orders an Aqua Tail and you see a powerful burst of water strike the queen down.

“Now’s the perfect chance!” Kori says. “Quick, throw me a pokeball.” You…
>Give Kori a pokeball. It’s her specialty after all.

If Kori thinks she can finish this in one blow, who are you to say no. You take out a pokeball and every small movement reminds you that gravity is still intensified. How are you going to get the ball to Kori without tossing it? There isn’t much between the two of you, thankfully. So you roll the pokeball. You misjudged how slanted the floor is though, and it ends up rolling closer to Katie. She holds out her arm as far as she can reach and manages to grab it.

As if with practiced precision, she tosses the ball up and Kori catches it. She points forward, and you see that both Gojira and her Golduck has the Mismagius pinned down. Gravity returns to normal and you notice Gojira lose his grip. The witch sees the futility of her struggle, so she sends one last Shadow Ball your way. Vulcan jumps up to put himself between you and harm’s way. You hear him yelp, and you think you yell his name. You feel a surge of emotions: anger, pride, guilt, but you need to make sure it’s safe to approach so his sacrifice wasn’t in vain.

There’s a small flash of light, and you realize there’s a sudden quietness. The ghosts have stopped fighting each other as everyone looks at the ball on the ground as it shakes. Once…

Then clicks. The tension in the air suddenly vanishes, as if a fog were being lifted. You limp to your Aron and see that he’s breathing. You sigh with relief. Vulcan is just fainted, though you do notice some cracks in that chrome armor of his. “You did good, friend,” you say. “Return.” With a flash of dim red light, your pokemon disappears back into his pokeball.

Next order of business. You see a plethora of ghost pokemon looking up at you. Without their queen, it looks like you’re the big honcho in charge. Or at least you think that’s how that saying goes. Except all the ghost pokemon turn to look at the Misdreavus, and you see them all change. Instead of the familiar pokemon, they all turn back into the soldiers you saw previously. Misdreavus’ illusion shows not a singer, but a princess?! The plain white dress is replaced with a fancier one; you see lace and trim, and she even wears a crown.

Were you just a convenient tool for a coup?

The stone bars fall, and you find yourself being hugged by Katie. You let out a grunt of pain. She apologizes. You say it’s okay; and the two of you hug in a more gentle manner. You even manage to rope Kori into the hug. There’s smiles all around, especially from Gojira and Katie’s Igglybuff.

“So, what should we do now?” Kori asks you.

You…
>Ask the new queen if she wants to join you.
>Ask the queen if you can borrow one of her subjects, but forever.
>Thank the queen and bid her ado. There’s lake pokemon you want.

Question, Do you use only 2 fingers to type?
>>
“It’s simple,” you tell Kori. “They used us, or more specifically me, to run a coup. So the way I see it, the new queen kinds of owes us a favor.”

“What’s with that malicious smile?” Kori asks. You see some concern on her face, and that concern doubles when she sees you holding what amounts to a bloody rag on your abdomen.

“I’m thinking of inviting the queen to join our merry band of adventurers,” you say. You’re almost salivating at the thought of having a pokeroyal in your team.

“You can’t do that!” Katie says with admonishment. “You’ll destabilize their whole system of government!”

“Bu- But royalty,” you say, pointing to the fake crown on your head. It feels awfully heavy, but you suppose the burden of running a fictional kingdom ought to be.

“At least consider your options,” Kori says. “This new queen is not strong. She needed to use you as a distraction to attempt the coup. One of her loyal servants, on the other hand, would make a great teammate. Especially if they thought they were going on a royally sanctioned journey.” You see a glint in her eyes, like a predator in a room full of prey. She did have a point though. You break your huddle then turn to face the newly appointed queen.

You clear your throat. “Thank you for freeing my friends,” you say. You bow, but this time you don’t wait for the signal to stand up. “I have one request though.” You wait, and the new queen nods her head. “I was hoping one of the subjects from your kingdom would join me on my quest. I’m thoroughly impressed by the battle I witnessed today.” You attempt your best regal tone, and you hope it’s convincing. It must be because the queen nods her head again. You see her lips move, as if she is speaking, but you don’t hear any words. Her soldiers, both the ones that sided with you and against you line up in front of you. The illusions fall, and you use your pokedex to analyze the pokemon in front of you:

(1/2)
>>
The first was a soldier wearing some kind of Egyptian armor. As the illusion fades, you find a Yamask in front of you. According to the pokedex, it has the ability Mummy. It has one unusual move: Nasty Plot, and it is a defensive pokemon. You see it salute; and you get a very Serious vibe from it.

The next soldier is covered in camaflouge, and when that fades, you find a Phantump staring at you. Your device tells you that it has Natural Cure, and the move reflect. It notes a higher than average attack stat. Seeing you inspect it, it blushes. Must be Bashful, you think.

Third is a soldier wearing all black, like a special ops kind of guy. A Duskull appears right next to your face. You flinch, and that causes the little prankster to giggle. Your Pokedex tells you he has the ability Frisk, and knows both Destiny Bond and Feint Attack.

The fourth wears a gas mask and a containment suit. As that illusion fades, you see the familiar face of a Gastly. It shrinks at your gaze, and you’re reminded of Gojira a little. You can tell without looking at the pokedex that it can Levitate, but you find out it also has the move Infestation. Wow, you weren’t expecting that…

The fifth and last soldier the queen offers you is a Litwick. The illusion faded before you got a good look at it. According to the pokedex, this one has Flash Fire and the moves Substitute and Swagger. It snickers at you, and you sense an Impish disposition.

They all look great, but you turn your attention to the new queen. “These are fine soldiers; you should be proud of yourself.” She beams with pride. “But I did say for a subject of your kingdom, and that kind of includes you.” She gives you a look of confusion before the realization strikes her. You’re asking her to run away from her duties and adventure with you. You see some conflict on her face; it seems like she’s torn between duty to her people and her promise to you. You use this time to scan her. She has a few special moves: Shadow Sneak, Curse, and Skill Swap, but it looks like Kori was right, the new queen has lower stats in general.

(2/2)

All that information now known, you decide to pick:

You look at all the options presented, and you briefly consider each option. How would they impact the team dynamic? Would the others get along with them? Would you?

You rule out the Phantump and Gastly right away. Bashful and cute is what Katie is for and you don’t need a timid pokemon that can accidently choke you in your sleep if it gets spooked.

The Duskull and Litwick seem like fun options, but you imagine they would annoy your other teammates. You bite your lip. Tempting; very tempting, but you decide they might not be the best options.

That leaves you the loyal soldier; serious, tough, probably disciplined. You could use that on journey. On the other hand, a part of you feels like the queen wants to join you. Yet when you see all her loyal subjects here, ready to join at her word, you can’t help but feel that they need her; and she needs them. You look at Katie, and you suppose she’s right.

“Hey,” you tell the queen. She stops fidgeting, and the illusion breaks. You can see the tension and stress apparent on the Misdreavus’s face. Your decision holds the fate of her and her kingdom, and you feel that perhaps that’s a little too much power to be wielding. “I’ve made my decision, and with your permission, I would like to…” You pause, for dramatic effect, but also to enjoy the look of both Katie and Kori hanging at your every word. “I would like to take that Yamask there. I feel that…” You check your pokedex. “He would make a great addition to my team.”

The emotions that pass through the Misdreavus’s face are telling. Relief, disappointment, a sense of loss, and joy. She resumes her regal form, boys, and pantomimes some words. The yamask steps forward, and for a moment you see the illusion of a knight in shining armor, kneeling before you. You note that the illusion is different from before. You nod at the queen and she nods back. You take out a pokeball and push it forward. It slides through the illusion and the button touches the Yamask’s golden face. In an instant, he’s taken. The ball only shakes once before stopping.

With that done, you’ve officially gained a new partner. You and your teammates cheer, and Gojira and Igglybuff join you guys.

One final important step….
>What’s the Yamask’s new nickname?

Also, I'm pleasantly surprised by the amount of anons that showed up. Hey guys, what do you hope happens during this quest?

Going with Mot.
Sounds more humble than Fancy Osiris.

Next time, anon. I like this name better but the other is more interesting. I'm sure both you and I will learn to love it in time, just as we'll learn to love the new partner.

Here's the updated Pokemon sheet: http://pastebin.com/DqdcTfig

[Anyways, I'll continue the thread tomorrow. Sleep calls me to her bed, and I'd rather not keep her waiting long. G'night guys! As always, feel free to comment, submit complaints, criticisms, and/or requests. I'll probably respond tomorrow morning. Thread will officially continue at 3 PM UTC-6; and after tomorrow I'll be taking a one week break to prevent QM burnout. Anyways, thanks for playing!]

You’ve got a solid theme going, more or less, and this time you decide to venture into Egyptian mythology. The obvious answer would be to go with Osiris, but several trainers who’ve made it to the Elite Four have already used that name. You want to stand out somewhat when you get there. A memory comes unbidden of a movie you watched several years ago. It was about some guy who explored ruins; you think he wore a fedora and had a whip? Anyways, he accidently unleashed an evil god into the world, and it was only through the bullshit excuse of the power of love that he was able to seal it away. This god was a personification of death, and you think that’ll fit here. Gojira is already taking the name back, so why can’t your newest member do that same?

You release your newest party member. “I think I’ll call you Mot,” you say. The Yamask raises its head high, proud to be of service. You turn to the queen. “I’ll take good care of him.” She nods her head and turns around to, presumably, bark orders at her subjects.

“Um, how are we getting out of here?” Katie asks. That’s a pretty good question. You could always try climbing out of that hole you came here from, though that might be a tad difficult. You could ask that Bunnelby if it knows a way back to the surface. You could always ask the Misdreavus, though she seems a little busy. Or you could keep exploring; you have a rod now and there might be interesting underground lake pokemon to catch.

You…
>Don’t want to lose your rope. Go all the way back and grab that rope.
>Like that Bunnelby. Go ask for its help.
>Partition another favor from the ghost royalty.
>Want to keep exploring. You could always use another ‘mon.

“That’s a good question,” you tell her. You look over the throne room and see that the queen, now back in her illusive state, is sitting on her throne, her loyal subjects scattering out, following orders and organizing. You wave at her and say, “My lovely queen, I’m afraid we must depart. Our newest member, Mot here, will escort us out. Let me just say that it has been a pleasure working with you.” You bow, and your companions do that same. Your Yamask salutes his queen before taking back through the labyrinth. As you walk, you turn to your companions. “So how did you guys end up here?”

Katie and Kori look at one another, and it’s Katie who speaks first. “Well after you left, Kori caught a few more pokemon. Did you know she only brought one with her?” You didn’t know that but you find the fact just a little bit impressive. There’s six pokeballs on her belt right now.

“Before we continue the story, I would like my stuff back,” Kori says. Right; they aren’t carrying their bags. You’re about to ask Mot where those are, but you see him stop then turn to the left. Looks like he heard and responded.

“So we passed through the river and found ourselves climbing up a few short cliffs until we found ourselves in some kind of forest,” Katie says.

“It became dark quickly,” Kori adds. “Unnatural. Too soon for night to descend.”

“Yeah,” Katie says. “It was only about 5:30 when that happened. We wandered around for a bit and I was pretty spooked. Kori kept me pretty calm though. That is, uh, until I freaked out. We were quickly surrounded by ghost pokemon, and they’ve always given me the heebie jeebies. So I ran, and Kori chased me. And next thing I know, I’m in this underground place and I’ve lost my hat.”

“Oh right. I actually found it,” you say. You take it out of your bag and hand it to her. She eagerly places it on her head, and you think she looks pretty immaculate. You decide to put the rock crown in your bag and replace it with the Chimney Sweeper’s cap Katie gave you.

“Thanks,” Katie says. “I actually think you pulled that crown off.” You feel yourself start to blush, but efore she says anymore, you find yourselves in some kind of storage room. Mot looks around for a bit and spots their bags. They gladly take it.

“Hey, is it okay if we take a few choice items?” You ask. Mot shrugs. You take that as a yes and look around. You manage to find a white scarf, and Kori informs you that it’s called a Silk Scarf. Apparently it raises the power of normal type moves. You also find a potion and revive, except the revive crumbles to dust when you touch it. You look to your new pokemon and he doesn’t protest, so you place these new items in your bag.

(1/2?)
>>
After that diversion, Mot continues to lead you to the exit. You note that you’re no longer in the labyrinth, but in some kind of great hall. There’s several long tables, and you guess this is some kind of large dining hall. The decorations here are more detailed. You can tell what’s supposed to be a plate, a fork, and a vase, though it’s still all made from stone.

Katie continues her tale: “Kori came down after me. We decided to explore and then we found this enormous underground lake. It was barely illuminated by the fungus you see around us.”

“Yeah, I actually followed your trail there,” you say. “I ended up fighting a Dratini, and then this happened.” You point to your gut wound.

“Oh right!” Katie says, a look of horror passing over her face. “How could I forget! Sit, sit down right now.” You follow her instructions. She takes some bandages out of her bag, what looks like a spray, and a bag of pills.

“I already took some anti-biotics and pain meds,” you inform her. She nods her head and puts those away.

Katie takes a deep breath, then releases it. “Okay, take off that rag and your jacket and shirt.” Wha-? You always thought you’d hear those words in a different situation. Still, you do as instructed. You find that you’re still wearing your pants-scarf-cape thing, so you throw that away. You struggle with your jacket until Kori helps you. Peeling your shirt off is a different deal, and you’re hesitant to look at your wound. The pain is dull but everpresent, especially now that the wound is reopened.

You see Katie pull out a water bottle and pour some of its contents on one of her shirts. You protest but she shushes you up quickly. You’ve never seen her so serious, so you watch in silence as she cleans your wound, and you only grunt in pain twice. When she’s done, she wraps your wound with the bandages. Once done, she let’s you put your jacket back on. “This is only temporary,” Katie says. “We’ll need to find a hospital, and you’ll need to get stitches. Can you walk?” You nod your head, and it isn’t as difficult to do as the first time.

Once past the great hall, there are stairs leading up. You see Mot open some kind of door, and you smell the familiar scents of the forest. You hear the sounds of Kricketot and Hoothoot. The night air is cool, so you zip up your jacket. You find yourself in a tiny clearing, and the door shuts behind you. In the darkness of the forest, you can’t even tell there’s supposed to be a door there. It’s hidden under grass and moss. You hear a soft lullaby of singing and cautiously approach.

(2/3)
>>
Beyond the bushes you’re hiding in, you see the girl in the pink track suit dancing amongst several pink pokemon. You don’t dare take out your pokedex in case the noise it makes alerts her to your presence.

“What’s she doing?” Katie whispers.

“Dancing,” Kori answers, her tone indicating something serious. Upon further inspection, she’s right. The girl and pink pokemon move around in a circle, some kind of rock in between them.

You watch silently. It looks like the girl and pokemon are just skipping around, and you find it difficult to tell any fine details. The only light you have is starlight. The forest is still really dark, but you see that the clearing they’re in is clear of trees. You think you can see the sky, though only a few stars are visible from your spot.

Clouds must’ve parted, because moonlight starts to fall into the clearing. It’s a little eerie, since the moonlight that hits seems focused, like a spotlight. You can see some kicking, a few of them twirl at the same time. The dance seems coordinated, like each being is a smaller part of something greater. Each being is a cog in the machine.

You see them pause, with the girl in the pink track suit facing your way. You don’t think she can see you, but the blonde hair and face is familiar. It’s the girl from before! You find yourself struggling to remember her name. She bows, and so do the other pink pokemon. One walks forward and touches the stone in the middle of the circle. It starts to glow, and so does the stone. You see its body begin changing. This must be evolution, you think. The bright, white glow fades, and you see that the pink creatures body did change. It’s a little taller now and you think it sprouted some kind of pink wings, though they look more like spikes.

The dance concluded, you hear the girl call out, “You can come out now.” She must have the same strange powers Kori does, and you see no point in acting ignorant. You use Katie’s help to stand back up and you limp to the girl. Your companions and various pokemon friends follow.

“Well met,” the girl says. “I’ve been struggling to topple the underground kingdom for a month. You appear for a day, and you’ve accomplished my task for me. Thank you, Alex.”

“You know the gym leader?!” Katie asks in surprise. Gym leader?

Kori steps forward and notes the confusion on your face. “Her name is Fortuna. Judging by the look on your face, she gave you a fake name.” Kori turns to face the gym leader. “There was no need for deception. Our brave leader knows little in the way of information.”

“Hey, I know stuff!” You say. It’s true that you could stand to know a few more things though.

“I see you are injured,” Fortuna says. “For aiding me in my quest, I will offer you one boon. I can heal you and your pokemon, but any hospital can do that. Would you instead prefer a buff? I can make your pokemon stronger and faster.” You do like the sound of those options. “Or perhaps it is gold you seek? Much have been offered to the fey, and they would gladly compensate you for your actions.”

It looks like the gym leader owes you a favor. You…
>Accept her offer to heal you.

>>
>>326265
You aren't restricted to 4 moves, but I think I will institute some kind of limit. So far most of your pokemon know at least 6 moves with several slots left.
>>
“So your quest was to overthrow a kingdom of ghost pokemon?” You ask. How do you play into this? All you did was stumble into a coup while trying to rescue your friends.

“Indeed,” Fortuna says. “This forest belongs to the fey. It was a well-known tourist spot, as was the underground lake. Some power-hungry fool knocked a sacred wall down and released a horde of ghosts. Angered, they decided to take the forest and the areas beyond. I’ve been busy curbing their behavior and trying to keep the general populace safe. When I heard about your friends, I knew I had to enter the fray personally lest more lives be taken.” That explains the old tent and the lack of people underground.

“So why didn’t you join me underground?”

“I sensed we were being surrounded by the king’s army. When you left the path, I decided to distract them in hopes that you could get away. I sent one of my own to protect you, but she informed me that you had escaped. Meanwhile, I gathered my forces and we clashed. I was able to capture their king and win the battle, but they still had their queen. That is until my informant told me you took her out.” That’s a lot of information to process, but it sounds like you helped to make this area safe to traverse again.

“The new queen seems pretty passive,” you say. “You’re not going to go after her, are you?”

“Nay,” Fortuna says. “A peace treaty can be brokered later. For now, I would like to bestow unto you your boon.”

You look at both your companions. Do each of you get one? As if answering your question, the gym leader states, “This is for you and you only.” Well then…

“In that case, I choose the boon of strength. I rely on my pokemon and they rely on me. The stronger they are, the better I’m allowed to be.” You’re not exactly sure what you said, but you think it sounds cool. Fortuna smiles. It seems like she understood you.

You release all your pokemon: Gojira is already next to you, but he moves to stand in front of you. He senses that something important is going to happen. You release Vulcan, and you see that he’s awake, even if he isn’t in fighting shape. Anuket looks around curiously; when she’s Gojira and Vulcan waiting, she decides to sit down and see what’s going on. Mot takes his place in line without being asked. And finally, Katie hands you a pokeball. You release the puppy from his confines and he yaps about before you’re finally able to get him to stand in line. One look from Fortuna is all it takes for him to go still.

She releases a sweet smelling pokemon; it’s a white pokemon with a red collar and pinky fluffy hair. The red sphere on its head reminds you of a cherry. Your pokedex identifies her as a Slurpuff. The Clefable and her procession of Clefairy gather around. You see the moonlight spotlight move to stand over you and your pokemon. The light starts to grow brighter, and you feel some power flow through you, though most of it seems to concentrate on your ‘mons. When the light disappears, you think you can see a little more muscle on them.

You think you see a little more muscles on your biceps too? Both Katie and Kori poke at you, and you see your mons walk about, testing the changes to their bodies.

“Now,” Fortuna says, and everyone stops to hear what she has to say. “Typical gym leader challenges work much like the quest you completed, though they tend to be less dangerous and more controlled. That being said, I would say you and your team earned my recognition. If you would allow it, I would like to give the three of you a Badge. The Team Decision Badge.” You know that every badge is split in two: the team badge is earned through a team challenge, and a regular badge is earned through battle. You’re only allowed one of each, but you know there’s still a certain amount of stigma associated with those who get into the League through team badges.

(2/2)

Still, you think you earned it. You…
>Accept the Team Badge.
>Refuse. Challenge her to a battle for a regular badge.

“You mean I’d get one too?” Katie asks. The surprise is very evident in her large green eyes.

“Indeed,” Fortuna says. “You survived a dangerous situation. You deserve it.”

You turn to face your teammates. “I know this isn’t how we thought we would get our first badge…” You’re speaking more to Kori than anything, but you’re kind of glad Katie is getting one too. “But I think we deserve it. What do you guys think?”

“I do not mind,” Kori says. “Though the media might have other thoughts when they find out.” You turn to look at Katie, a question plain in your expression: Is that true?

“T-they might comment,” she says. “And I never thought of myself as a badge collector, but I wouldn’t mind having one I could proudly pin to my shirt. It might earn me more respect, and it’ll mean I’ll have more options at Pokemarts.” You find Lugh circling your legs, so Katie puts him in your arms. He’s just a little heavier than when you last carried him, but you don’t mind. You feel stronger and you make sure his tail or legs don’t brush against your wound. You kiss Lugh on the forehead and let him lick your face which gives you a moment to think.

You turn to face the gym leader. “I think my team and I accept the badge. Though I would still like to test my skills in battle. If the media finds out-”

“When they find out,” Kori states.

You amend your statement. “When the media finds out, I don’t want them to try to tarnish my name and call me a coward or whatever terms they decide to use.” You turn back to your teammates and add, “Also, apparently I’m on a magazine or something? A fan approached me on the street earlier today.”

“What?” Katie asks in surprise. “As your media consultant, I need to find out everything they’ve said about you. We, uh, we need internet. I need internet.”

“I can arrange a battle,” Fortuna says. “But it will have to wait. Tonight it is late, and you and your teammates are in need of healing. The fey only allowed one boon, so I cannot intervene in those matters.” She pauses, and you think her eyes glow momentarily. “If you give me two days, I can have a battle scheduled.” Don’t you have something planned for that day. You look at your companions and then realize. The bike event!

You…

“Uh, would it be okay to postpone that battle? I was hoping to make it to the bike event in River City.” You give the gym leader your best apology face.

“They’re giving away free bikes,” Katie adds. It’s an event that’s too good to pass up.

Fortuna puts a finger to her chin, obviously in thought. “Yes I suppose that’s fair. I can squeeze you in for five days from now. Just make sure to tell Mayor Hardon that I said hello.”

“Mayor Hardon?” Is this guy some kind of porn star?

“He’s the one organizing the event,” Katie informs you. You kind of guessed that by context but no one seems to blink an eye at his name. You decide not to make a big deal of it.

That being said, Fortuna produces three badges. You gladly take yours and carefully place it in your bag. You’re going to have to ask one of the nurses at any Pokemon Center for a badge case. “Now that we’re done here,” Fortuna says. “Let’s get you guys out of the forest.”

*****

That dealt with, you were taken to the hospital and the doctor made sure to stitch your wound. He gave you a hospital room, wanting you to rest at the hospital for the night. Your pokemon are left at the Pokemon Center in the first floor under one of the nurse’s care. They gave you some strong painkillers and you feel a little fuzzy, though you aren’t ready to sleep.

Katie sits on one of the chairs, her attention to the tablet on her lap. Kori sits on the other side of the bed near the window. She’s currently reading a book. Lugh sits curled on your lap, and you absentmindedly pet him.

You look around at the relative calm. It’s nice to have a breather in-between the action. It’s a little hard to believe that you fought for your life earlier today, and what was with that weird wumbo that happened to you when you fought the Buizel and Dratini. Some kind of bloodlust? A lingering effect from that time you fought Team Invictus? You’re not sure, but you suppose you’ll keep it to yourself for now.

You take this time to reminisce for a bit. It hasn’t even been a week since you started your journey and you’ve already fought alongside heroes, dodged the media, gained two companions, stopped some kind of fairy-ghost war, and won yourself a badge. You technically have a full team of pokemon already, though Robin is currently with your mom and Lugh is still too young to fight. You continue to pet him as you think. You have a full day starting tomorrow before the biking event happens. You could finish up here, though you doubt there’s much to do. Maybe a mission or two. Or you could ride the train and wander about the city.

You’ve been to River City a few times, and it has some great historical spots. There’s a small safari zone and the price to get in isn’t too high. There’s also the Riverwalk, which is known for its specialty shops and variety of water pokemon. The steel gym leader has a gym there, though you don’t remember exactly who it is.

You look down at the small orange figure cuddling up to you, then to Katie. You think she’d enjoy the boardwalk, and she’d probably enjoy taking Lugh there. She’s been a fantastic mother so far. Which reminds you! You should probably call your mom.

You indicate to Katie that you want your phone, so she goes through your bag until she finds it. You quietly thank her, and she goes back to whatever she’s working on. You like the way you can casually hang out with your companions in this hospital room. It’s comfortable.

You quickly scroll through your meager contacts list and press the one labeled “Mom.” The phone rings a few times until she picks up. “Hello? Alex, it’s late, honey. Did something happen?”

“Um, yeah, mom. I sort of got attacked and got a few stitches.” You see both Kori and Katie look up at you as you start talking. They both go back to what they were doing previously. Looks like they were expecting this.

“How serious is it?” Your mom asks. You can tell she’s worried but trying not to show it. She knows how dangerous the adventuring gig can get, and she knows just how much you’ve always wanted to go on one yourself.

“It’s not too serious,” You tell her. “The doctor said the stitches can be removed in three days but the wound won’t heal completely until a week. All-in-all, that’s not so bad.”

(1/3?)
>>
“No, it isn’t,” your mom says. You know she’s heard of worse injuries. You’ve heard the stories. Your uncle Jerry was once hospitalized for a week straight and spent 3 months recovering. And he needed physical therapy too. “By the way, Robin has been getting pretty restless. I think she wants to see you. Should I send her your way?”

“Uh, no that’s fine,” you say. If you’re being honest with yourself, you were never that attached to her, though you feel that would be rude to say. “I’ll visit soon though,” you add.

“Alright, well take care of yourself,” she says. You’re pretty sure your mom can take care of your Munchlax, er, her Munchlax? You’re not sure if you’re ready to give up ownership yet. You say your goodbyes and hang up; it’s always nice to talk to your mom.

You turn over to Kori. “So, who did you catch back there?”

Kori puts her book down. You notice it’s a manual on turning apricots to balls. “I started off with a Paras, as I thought its stun spore would be useful, and it was. When Katie and I fought that Golduck, Paras took a powerful blow to the face to paralyze him. I also caught a Lotad, Tynamo, and Drillbur. And of course the self-professed queen. I usually let every pokemon but one go… Except I ended up reflecting on what you said. Professor Plato is currently holding all the extra pokemon I catch, and I think I might reserve a permanent place in my party for a few pokemon. I think Mismagius will be the first.”

“And that Growlithe you found?”

“I gave it to Katie. Since Lugh belongs to you, she decided she wanted a Growlithe of her own.” You look over to Katie, but she’s too absorbed on what she’s doing. When you turn back to continue talking with Kori, you see she continued reading.

Not wanting to further disturb the two fine ladies, you turn on the TV. The volume starts out at an acceptably low level, but there seems to be some kind of romcom going on. You’re not really privy to those so you channel surf until you find the news. The person on the screen looks familiar, and you realize it’s the same Asian lady who stopped you in front of your house to ask you a question. Behind her, you see some kind of building on fire and a hydrant blowing water into the air.

“…the scene. The Cinders have started to escalate their attacks, and the Zephyrs are beginning to retaliate. Citizens are scared despite the employment of every local hero around the twin cities. Ever since their deployment, a report states that 50 lives have been saved.”

“Have you been able to reach any of them for comment?” A handsome reporter at the studio asks.

“I’m afraid not, Chris. It’s absolute chaos over here. Yesterday the mayor instated martial law, and-” There’s an explosion somewhere off camera, and then static.

The reporter puts his hand to the device presumably hidden in his ear. There’s a clear sign of worry on his face. There’s a pause, and you think you’d be at the edge of your seat if you could. “We’ve established communication,” the man, Chris, announces. You see a flicker of emotion on his face. Anxiety, realization, guilt? Then nothing. Then relief? “It’s alright,” he says. “They – they were able to make it away in time.” You see Chris look down momentarily, his face hidden from the camera. Did something actually happen? He looks back up, and you think his eyes are a little puffy. “We’ll be right back,” he chokes out, before it switches to commercials.

Katie whistles. “Things must be getting pretty hectic if it’s escalated into a full gang war.”

“If we want to enter the city and help, then we should probably go as soon as possible,” Kori states.

“No way!” Katie says. “Alex is injured and we’re nowhere near good enough to help!”

“Correction,” Kori says, her eyes hard. “You’re not good enough.”

The tension in the air is palpable. You…
>Let this play out. You don’t want to be more than physically in the middle of this.
>Tell Kori to back off. Katie is right and she’s a valuable member of the team.
>Defend Katie but agree with Kori. You can definitely help out.
>Write-in

No matter what choice you make, you’re not choosing whether to actually go towards the gang war. You’re just choosing a side, even if that side is just yours.

>Kori no insulting our team mates. Katie is a decent enough battler.
>Katie we're going, this is probably going to be a running thing with me. we work together stick close and sweep slowly. We'll be okay.

>Tell Kori to back off

It's 2am here so I really need to go, but as I said before I'm really enjoying this, so keep doing what you're doing

Good night anon! Thanks for joining. I hope your dreams are filled with people of the gender you're attracted to.

I'll back this, though instead of saying she's a decent enough battler, maybe just say she's been a great help so far.

How to address this? You don’t want both ladies to attack you all of a sudden; after all, you’re injured. You decide to address each grievance that comes to you:

“Woah, hey, hey, hey!” You yell out to get their attention. You immediately focus on Kori. “Hey now, Katie is a valuable member of this party. You said you trusted my judgment, and I was the one who decided that she should join us.”

“You’re blinded by your infatuation,” Kori states. Y-you, uh, resent that? She’s kind of right, but you can’t admit that here.

“I saw Katie assisting us in that battle when you captured the queen,” you say. “She’s great at doing her role, which is support. Besides, she helped keep the media away from me when I wanted to go meet you. If it wasn’t for her, we might not have met and there wouldn’t be a team!”

“Y-yeah!” Katie says. You hold a hand up to shush her.

“I’ll get to you in a moment,” you say. You focus back on Kori, but instead of using words you look her in the eyes. There was always a certain intensity to the way Kori saw things. You know she sees things others would miss, and you feel like she can stare at your bare soul. You don’t break eye contact though. Your spine tingles, you start to feel dizzy, and you have to hold on to the bar at the side of the hospital bed. Still, you continue to stare Kori down. Finally, she relents and looks away first.

“I concede,” Kori says. “It is true that Katie’s skills lie outside of battling, and I would be lying if I said that she wasn’t useful when we fought the Golduck.” You let out the breath you didn’t realize you were holding. This is good. This is progress. “Still,” Kori adds. “I still think she should train harder. Her Pokemon are weak, and if she ever got separated, I worry for her health.”

“Was that an admission that you care for Katie?” You ask. This is brilliant. You think you see Kori starting to blush, but she looks away. Kori doesn’t say it, but you’re pretty sure that’s a yes. You relent and turn your attention to Katie. She yelps, seeing that she now has your full attention. “And you,” you say. “You shouldn’t doubt us, Kate. I fought Team Invictus and walked away. Kori was this close,” you indicate just how close by holding your index finger close to your thumb, “to catching a legendary. Together, I’m sure we can handle a few crooks.”

“B-but you’re injured!” Katie says. The worry on her face is blatant. “And there’s no telling that we’ll always be together. Look, Kori is right. I’m pretty weak, and I only survived a month as a solo trainer by mostly avoiding the wilderness.” You see Katie struggle to put words together. There’s a shift there. You think she finds a measure of resolve. “I – I can’t go with you if you decide to go fight a gang war. I would be a liability.” Before you can say anything, she adds: “That doesn’t mean I’d quit the team. If you guys want to go fight, then I’ll stay behind and train. I’ll get stronger; and then I’ll join back up with you guys.”

Now you’re feeling torn. You’ve always wanted to be a hero and by going to the front lines, you can finally start. On the other hand, you don’t want your team to separate. It’s only been a few days, but you like these people, a lot. And you would probably take a fire blast for them. So now you’re torn. Split the team and follow your dream right away, or bench your dream and keep the team together.

You…
>Still want to go fight that gang war. Katie can keep in contact.
>Don’t want to split up. Plus, there’s free bicycles.
>Write-in

Sorry about the wait times. On the plus side, I think I may have found my authorial voice? At the very least, I think I understand the characters pretty well now.

>>Don’t want to split up. Plus, there’s free bicycles.
>Katie needs to train, I need to heal, Kori needs to find at least one more Pokémon she's thinks she can have a dedicated mon for the gang war. Odds are there are going to be a lot of enemies and she's going to need to know her mons like the back of her hand if she doesn't want to get overwhelmed in a fight. Then once we get the gym battle in, we head out to fight.

We ride bikes together, we die together

Get them wheels

I like both of these ideas
>>327286
>>327357
We are not in a position of strength at the moment, and we don't have a consistent means of travel. With rest, bikes, and the benefit of a Gym Battle under our belts we can make a decision from a position of strength.

“That’s not happening,” you assure her. “I don’t want to split the team up.” There’s still a strong tension in the air. No one is talking, and you’re not sure what to do about it. Katie is breathing hard, and Kori is still looking away. Should you just stay quiet? A lot of feelings were let out, and you don’t have much experience with this kind of stuff.

So you say the first thing that comes to mind: “At least we’ll get free bicycles. We bike together and die together.” You hear Katie huff, then Kori starts to giggle. Soon, they both start laughing and you’re wondering if what you said was really that funny.

“I like that,” Kori says between breaths.

“Yeah, that can be our team slogan,” Katie says.

Both of them still giggle. When Katie gets close to stopping, all it takes is one look at Kori before she starts madly laughing again, and vice-versa. It seems that there’s a laughing bug around, and it’s contagious.

It takes a few minutes before the laughing finally dies down, and it seems to have woken up Lugh. He looks around curiously. Finally you say, “We need a plan.”

“I’ll say,” says Katie. Kori merely nods her head.

“I need to heal. Katie, you need to train. And Kori, you’re going to need at least a few more consistent members of your party. The better you know them, the better a battler you’ll be.” You see your companions intently listening to every word you say. Just when did you get so competent? “We’re gonna get those bikes, I’m going to fight Fortuna, and when we think we’re strong enough, we’re gonna go help.” You put your hand out. Kori puts her hand over yours, then Katie puts her hand over Kori’s. Lugh adds his snout. Together, the four of you raise your hands in the air. (In Lugh’s case, he raises his head up, chases his tail, then falls down to the space between your legs.)

Together, you’re a team. And together, you’ll get stronger.

[Alright guys, that’s all for tonight. I’m going to archive the thread then take my extended break. It’ll be anywhere from 4 days to a week from now. I’m already beginning to feel the effects of quest burnout and no one wants that to happen. Anyways, I’ll keep y’all updated via twitter (@knight_quest). Feel free to leave any questions, statements, etc. and I’ll be around to answer them/respond until the thread falls off the board. See ya guys later!]

Thanks for running. What were the girls thoughts on us acting like a leader? Is Lugh team mascot?
>>
>>327483
They seem to view you as a natural leader.

Lugh has the potential for team mascot; i.e. If anons decide he should be, then he will be.

>>327264

What legendary did she almost catch?

Great times again QK!

You've never actually asked her which, but it was a Virizion.
