You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

Reagan holds your arm all the way back to the banquet and teases you every single step of the way. You wish you could have taken a cold shower to get over her, but you suspect it would have just made everything much, much worse, so you settle for pulling your jacket down to cover the area around your belt buckle.

"That was quite refreshing, your highness," Princess Reagan says. "I hope we can do this again some time."

You smile and remain quiet, because anything you say will just walk you right into a trap. Reagan giggles daintily and goes to a quieter section of the room so she can eat peacefully, leaving you behind.

You've learned more about Agda's relationship with her sister and about Aleksandra's issues with Gwyrddarfordir, so you consider your work done for the night. The party is still going though, and it would be unseemly if you left too early. You are, after all, a representative of the hosts.

>Go look for your brother. You should make sure he's enjoying himself.
>Go look for your mother. You want to spend time with someone sane.
>Return to your date Rhonwen. You've left her alone too long.

You decide to go see your mother. No, how tight your pants currently are doesn't make this weird at all.

Your parents are both standing in a circle of gathered noble. You recognize most of them as your father's old friends, who have since long retired and passed their titles on to their children.

"I remember that battle!" Your father… guffawing is the only way to describe it, really. "My sword was with the enchanter for repairs and the cowards attacked us at night, so I grabbed the first chair I saw, broke off one of the legs and clubbed the first Svekkan that got in reach! It was glorious!"

You can't help but wonder what the watchmen were doing if anyone was able to get that close to the king's tent, but it was many years ago. Maybe things were different back then?

Or maybe your father just pitched his tent too close to the enemy. That's also a possibility.

"As I recall, father," you say, "you traded your club for a torch as soon as you could."

"Hmm… no that wasn't quite it," he says. "I doused a rag in a oil, wrapped it around the club and then set it on fire. Nearly burned my hand doing it, but it was as good as any other enchanted weapon! Hahaha!"

"That's nice, darling." You can hear the condescension in your mother's voice, although you doubt your father would notice. "I need to speak with Meirion for a bit, so have fun with your friends."

Your mother disentangles herself from the king's entourage and goes to the wine table. You pour her a full glass for good measure.

"Maybe I can talk your father into going on a hunting trip," your mother says. "I think it's the fifth time to night I've heard about that club."

"He could use a few more war stories in his repertoire," you say. "Then again, it's probably better if he doesn't try to add any more."

"Yes, I suppose so," the queen says. "How was your evening, dear? I noticed you had quite a bit of company."

"Women are crazy."

"Desperate people are crazy, dear," your mother says. "When people see something they really want and need, it's only normal for them to work hard to get it."

"That explains two of them," you say, "but I'm quite certain Archduchess Aleksandra's immediate needs are all satisfied now that her political enemies are no longer in the picture."

You should know. You're the one who killed her political enemies. There's still the matter of your uncle's involvement, but he won't be here for a day or two. Sure, her country lost some crucial battles in recent years, most of them because of you, but if she was that bothered about it, you don't think she would have come to Gwyrddarfordir.

"The Archduchess… her position is most stable, but perhaps it's the most complex."

"What do you mean, mother?"

"The possibility of a political marriage between Gwyrddarfordir and Rosea must have occurred to her, and she's one of the most likely candidates," your mother says. "Rosea doesn't need it as much as Svekka and Olstren do, and it would even be a loss for her power, but it would still be an advantage to Rosea as a kingdom."

That would explain why she's looking for a Gwyrden consort, but it doesn't quite explain why she's being so hostile.

"I'm not sure," you say. "The way she cornered those old men was a little overbearing."

"Oh, that's just how Roseans are, dear." Your mother waves her hand dismissively. "They have a great deal of respect for military prowess, and they're quick to mock failure. She was respectfully to you, wasn't she?"

"Yes, she was." You're forced to agree. Aleksandra wasn't exactly happy to speak with you, but she wasn't needlessly rude either. "I don't suppose you have any insight into Princess Agda while you're at it? She indicated that she didn't want to be separated from her sister, if you understand my meaning."

"A third concubine won't make much of a difference, so long as her interests are aligned with your wife's," your mother says. "I won't influence your choices in any direction, but that's something to keep in mind. You want to avoid conflict between your lovers."

"That seems a bit obvious, mother," you say, "but thank you for the reminder."

"Of course, dear."

I do feel that if we managed to make the Archduchess marriage work, we could potentially burry the hatchet between our kingdoms. Throw in a mutual share trade endever using the disputed ports so both kingdoms profit from them and your pretty much turned an enemy into an ally.

You dance with your mother for the first time in years; the last time you did this, your head was only just barely at the height of her chest. Your mother's style is refined and elegant, but it's very carefully controlled; she lacks the passion you've seen in Eleri, for example.

"You're quite a talented dancer, dear," your mother says. "Honestly, I didn't expect you to take your lessons so seriously."

"If I have to learn, I may as well put some effort into it," you say. "It has been quite useful."

"That's the spirit, dear," your mother says. "Now, I should return to your father and make sure he doesn't embarrass everyone."

"Good luck, mother."

"Yes." Your mother sighs. "I expect I'll need it."

With nothing else to do, you return to Rhonwen, Myrddin and Nimue.

"Welcome back, your highness," Rhonwen says. "Are you done socializing?"

"Hopefully," you say. "At least, I don't think there's anyone else I need to speak with."

"Lady Rhonwen was telling us more about her work," Myrddin says. "It's a shame to discuss work during a celebration, but it's quite promising."

"I didn't mind, I assure you," Rhonwen says. "It's certainly more meaningful than most conversations that go on during these things. Speaking of which, I should be getting back."

"In that case, I'll bring you back to your carriage," you say.

"Thank you, your highness."

Rhonwen takes your arm and you walk her back to her carriage. To warm herself in the cool night air, she presses herself against you harder. It doesn't help your "situation."

"This evening was quite enjoyable, your highness," Rhonwen says as she climbs into the carriage. "Even if this isn't the sort of thing I usually do."

Well the merchant one is a nest of problems due to potential revolution, but then again its not like we dont need to reform our own merchant class as is. Thing is, its does not allign quite so well, if we tried to reform 2 countries at once itll be more of a headache. If we had reformed our system already then sure, itd be a solid choice.
Moderate risk, moderate reward.

Reagan has power issues at home, it smells of civil war. On one hand: should allow us to semi conquor them and intergrate the crowns into one kingdom. On the other: we still have hostile neighbours so everything is a massive gamble, and our neighbours are very unlikely to sit on the sidelines. High risk, high reward.

The duchess is the low risk, low reward (initially anyway), but also has good prospects to work on, especially if we can quell enenimity between the two countries somehow. Securing one boarder lets us focus on the others should we seek to expand our realm, or just fend off threats. Normalizing relations opens marriage prospects in the future between the royal families, if we can stear it right, without looking like an outside usurper.
>>
>>333787
ehhh...

Esyllt is best for slowly pulling pressure away from the revolution in Svekka, but we really need another person with Alchemy or Enchantment.

"It was a nice evening," you say, although you suspect Rhonwen's evening was smoother than yours. Perhaps we can spend time together again in the future."

Rhonwen tilts her head and smiles slightly. "I believe I would enjoy that very much," she says. "I look forward to it, your highness."

You stand there for a moment and watch Rhonwen's carriage ride away. Then you return to the banquet at a brief pace. It's late enough that guests are beginning to leave, and your presence won't be missed, so you find Olwen and wrap your arm around her waist.

"Where's your father?"

"You're certainly in a hurry," Olwen says. "He's drinking with his old war buddies. He won't be functional until tomorrow morning, at the earliest."

"In that case…" You make sure no one's looking and kiss your way up Olwen's neck. "Let's get going."

Olwen laughs and playfully slaps your hand away. "I saw you with those princesses," she says. "You just want to take your frustrations out on my body."

"I remember you begging me to do exactly that last time."

"Yeah, you're right," Olwen says. "Let's go."

You walk through the first few corridors before running the rest of the way to your chambers. You toss Olwen onto your bed and "take out your frustrations" until you're both too tired to stay awake.

The sun rises and the next morning comes, as it always does. Olwen is still sleeping, cuddled against you. You're tempted to stay like this, but you do have work to do. Again.

So long as we have the dancing girl I will be happy. Getting Merion to dance hard as fuck routines amuses me.

yes, but Delyth is our only connection to the Church. We need a solid relationship with the religious faction for later down the line, incase working with Reagan or spillover from Svekka causes some civil unrest.

So long as we have the merchant girl I will be happy. Alliance?

There isn't much of a religious faction. We're basically pseudo-shinto/ancestor worshipers. If we had a more organized religion (which we could attempt, mind you) I'd agree with you.

Considering that our country has hero worship we probably won't be facing problems on that end as long as we keep winning.
>>
>>333937
Depends on the religion. Its very simple if your holy places are all under control and all the authority figures come together to do it. Sure youll get some who stick to the old ways, but its relatively easy if you have all the top preists working together.

You stare at Olwen longingly for a moment before rolling out of bed. After a quick shower, you get changed and get ready for another day at work. Olwen mumbles in her sleep as you pass by, and you pull the blanket up so she doesn't get cold. Just because you have to work doesn't mean you should wake her up. Olwen's as busy as you are, but she can afford to rest a little.

As you walk to your office, your gaze falls upon a scene of horror that sends shivers down your spine.

Princess Reagan is talking with your mother. And Myrddin. And they're all smiles and laughter.

This does not bode well for you.

You put on your most convincing smile - you doubt it'll fool your mother, but it might work on Myrddin and Reagan - and walk up to them.

"Good morning," you say. "I hope you had a restful night, Princess Reagan."

"Yes, the rooms here are quite comfortable," Reagan says. "I was just complimenting to her majesty and Mister Myrddin."

"She was also complimenting you, dear," your mother says. "Princess Reagan said you offered to take her out along with our guests, and we were discussing possible venues."

"I wasn't expecting it this early," you say, "but since I promised I can't go back on my word. What did you have in mind?"

"Myrddin said you were considering taking a concubine or two," Reagan says.

"Yes, they're all admirable young women," Myrddin says. "Extremely talented in their field and full of potential. I sincerely hope his highness can convince one or two of them to support him."

"Hearing Myrddin's praise," Reagan says, "I decided it would be interesting to meet them."

Palrans are right. There is a hell, and you're living it. That's at least ten women total, which is quite a bit more than you're used to entertaining at once.

"Don't make such a concerned face, dear," your mother says. "We'll at least let you choose the place."

"The Royal Theatre Company is hosting a dress private dress rehearsal we could attend," Myrddin says, "or you could simply invite them to the palace for lunch."

That's not much of a choice.

The Queen won't be winning any duels personally, but she's not bad as strategy.

The royal family is extremely religious, but it's more about embodying and respecting the legacy of their heroic ancestors than any kind of worship or religious ceremony. However, different factions have different interpretations of how those legacies should be passed on and inherited, particularly with regards to marriages with foreigners.

Olstren and Rosea are both polytheistic with an interpretation of the gods that's similar to the Greek, while Svekka is currently experiencing a variety of religious movements as part of their social conflicts.

"The rehearsal sounds interesting," you say. "How does it work?"

"We have a large private loge in the theatre," your mother says. "The company is willing to accommodate us."

Wait, when did she check with the company? Or has she done something like this before?

Well, it's not like it matters either way.

"That sounds quite convenient," you say. "You're certain we won't disturb them?"

"The loge is insulated with magic so sound doesn't get through," Myrddin says. "You could murder someone in there and no one would notice until the janitor came by."

"Myrddin, I how do you even know that?"

"Your highness, please." He tilts his head towards Princess Reagan. "Not in front of company."

Said company is nodding to herself while mumbling, "Sound-proof theatre loges… I think I can use that…"

You doubt she minds the casual discussion of murder much.

"Myrddin, please send out the invitations," you say. "I suppose I'll go get Olwen."

"Of course, your highness."

Myrddin goes off to send out the letters, while Reagan and your mother walk away together, whispering to each other. It feels dreadfully ominous. You return to your room, having accomplished nothing. You almost wish you'd just stayed in bed, but then you might not have gotten to choose where you were going at all.

Olwen has slipped out of bed and gotten dressed while you were out. She's not wearing the clothes she had on last night, which means she manage to sneak a wardrobe into your own room without you noticing. You'll have to look into that later.

"Good morning," she says. "You look like someone killed you and dropped the body by the side of the room."

"That sounds about right," you say. "Princess Reagan and my mother want to meet some of my potential concubines. I'll be bringing Princess Agda, her sister and Archduchess Aleksandra as well."

Olwen stares at you blankly for a moment. Then she points at you and laughs. "This is going to be amazing," she says. "I have to be there. What are you going to do?"

"I want to see how their interests coincide," you say. "Myrddin and my mother both warned me to try and avoid conflict in my… what should we call this anyway?"

"In Palran, they call it a harem," Olwen says.

"No, that's not quite the right connotation," you say. "A harem is more about pleasure, and the internal politics are different."

"Why not just call us advisors?"

"That would include Myrddin," you say. "Which - and I believe you'll agree with me on this - is not something I wish to associate with our activities."

"Yeah, you're right," Olwen says. "The image of Myrddin giving birth to your children isn't nearly entertaining enough to make up for how horrifying it is."

"Thank you so much for that, Olwen."

You ignore your consort and read all the notes you have on Olstren, Svekka, Rosea, and your potential concubines. You don't want to go into this blind.

But it is a harem, Meiron should see reality for once.
>>
>>334172
Well, harem's are indeed only about pleasure, not politics. I'd say this is more... polygamous?

Let him stay in denial.

Having concubines and consort is a harem, regardless if it's only for pleasure or not.

Your notes are well-organized and you've already studied most of it, so this is just a refresher. You know who the problem nobles are, which of Esyllt's merchant contacts do business with Svekka, what kinds of enchantments are popular in Rosea and so on.

This is just superficial knowledge though. Agda, Reagan, Aleksandra, Delyth, Esyllt, Eleri, Isla and Nia - and that is a lot of names - each have their own specialties and interests, and you need to know how their interests conflict or coincide before you make any decision that can't be taken back.

The princess and the Archduchess are waiting outside with your mother when you arrive.

"Oh, Meirion," your mother says. "Since you're here, why don't you join us?"

So that's how she wants to do it. Well, since Princes Reagan is playing along, you might as well join in.

"Certainly, mother," you say. "Where are we going?"

"The theatre, dear. There's a rehearsal I'd like to attend, and I believe I invited some other friends of yours as well."

"It sounds quite interesting," Agda says. "I'm afraid I never had much time for the theatre."

"Operas are more popular in Rosea," Aleksandra says, "so this is quite novel for me."

It's a short journey to the theatre; it's the Royal Company after all, so they have to stay close to the palace. Still, you have to split up in different carriages to get everyone there at the same time.

And everyone is there at the same time; Myrddin and your potential consorts are already in the lobby. As always, the man works fast

Eleri is staring at the paintings and sculptures that decorate the place, Nia's smirk widens when she sees you and your other guests, Isla looks perfectly casual as if she were walking through the markets, Delyth is nearly standing at attention and Esyllt is perfectly calm and poised.

"Ah, your majesty, you're here," Myrddin says. "And I see you brought the prince as well. Perhaps some introductions are in order?"

You could make the introductions yourself, but you're quite certain your mother knows who everyone is, even if it's only through Myrddin's description.

Come to think of it, as your mother met any of your potential concubines?

>Take care of the introductions yourself.
>Let your mother take care of it.
>Skip the introductions entirely.

"Of course, Myrddin," you say. "Allow me to introduce Princess Reagan mac Connaught from Olstren, Princess Agda Almstedt from Svekka and Archduchess Aleksandra Volkova from Rosea."

Reagan and Agda are both looking at your other guests with interest, while Aleksandra seems more amused than anything and Laila just seems pleased to be meeting new people.

"This is Esyllt Coleran, one of my business associates."

Esyllt carefully raises her skirt and curtsies. "It's a pleasure to make your highness' acquaintance," she says. "Will request my services if you need anything. I can obtain any good that's traded in Aurwain within the hour, if you wish it."

"This have Eleri Lloyd, one of the artists under my patronage." You motion towards the girl, who has stopped looking at the decoration so she could curtsey with grace matching Esyllt.

"Greetings, your highness."

She repeats her words three times, in Olstren, Svekkan or Rosean. You're surprised she's able to speak so many languages, considering the amount of time she must devote to singing and dancing. The others are surprised as well.

"I'm impressed," Aleksandra says. "There aren't many Gwyrden commoners who can speak Rosean."

"Thank you, your highness," Eleri says. "I enjoy performing Rosean opera, so I learned in order to perfect my craft."

"This is Isla Owens, one of our alchemists."

Isla bows her head slightly, but she doesn't make a show of it. "It's nice to meet everyone." Either she doesn't know etiquette, or she simply doesn't mind it. You suspect it's the latter, given her position.

"This is Nia Fisher, from the Enchanters' Guild."

"I'm flattered to find myself in such honoured company," Nia says, "and that the prince was interested in pursuing his 'friendship' with me."

"And finally, here is Delyth, one of our temple chaplains."

"Thank you for inviting me to this event, your highness," Delyth says. "I welcome our exalted guests, and hope that old wounds won't come to define our future together."

As a chaplain, it's only normal for Delyth to know about the martial conflicts between Gwyrddarfordir and its neighbours. You're glad to see she's calling for peace.

"Now that everyone's been introduced," your mother says, "we should get going. We don't want to keep the company waiting."

Your mother leads the way while you lag behind with Myrddin and Olwen. Then you realize that leaves you staring at the nine women in front of you, and you can't help but wonder how you're going to get out of this alive and with your dignity intact.

And that is all for today's thread. It's a little bit early, but this is a good cut off point. The next thread will give you a better idea of how the different waifus can work together, so I'll be able to expand the information in the pastebin.

As usual, the next thread will be Friday June 8th at 7PM Eastern. Until then, thanks for playing and good night. If you have any questions, you can just leave them here and I'll get around to reading them when I can.

Anyone else think that Aleksandra might recognize Delyth?
>>
>>334343
Does Laila give any skill discounts or is that already built into what Agda offers?
>>
>>334362
She might, though I don't recall Delyth being present during any of the meetings with her. Also, Delyth understood that was stealthy, cloak and daggers type stuff, so she shouldn't be a major risk to our double life. Something to keep an eye on though.

>>334343
Oh boy, I can't imagine how the next thread will be with all that women. Meirion is too competent for total spaghetti, but I don't know what will happen instead. I'm looking forward to the thread.

OP, the sovereign skill points are off by 10. After thread 25 we were by 99 and we earned +19 in thread 27 and +12 in thread 28 so we should have been at 130 instead of 120 at the beginning of this thread.
