"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

The warmth of the sun on your skin, the scent of summer in your nostrils, birdsongs flittering across the meadow to your ears. It's almost picturesque.

A cloud passes over you, causing you to blink as you adjust to the shade and sudden chill. You can smell the yellow Jacobea, the strong sweet aroma overwhelming the odour of sweat, dirt and piss that you would normally expect from huddling behind a low paddock wall with a few hundred of your companions. The chirping of Forktailed Redjay's is slowly drowned out by the stomp of many boots in unison, growing ever louder. You don’t need the hushed whispers, touches and nods that make their way down the line to know your target is near.

A column of Tassenland provincials, or militia. Untested, yet to be blooded and hopefully ill equipped. Still, you don’t have the numbers you’d reckon to be ideal for an ambush, if they don’t break quick things could get ugly. That or your intel could be horribly wrong and that body of men could be twice your number in hardened Imperial Legionaries. Wouldn’t be the first time. From your crouched position you can see a nervous looking lad from 4th Platoon ready the horn for the signal.

You start to feel it. Not fear. That awful, other thing. The one you’ve tried and failed to suppress throughout your 10, going on 11, years in the Black Company. The subversive inclination, that treacherous urge that will one day surely earn you a place in the Annalists books and a bed in the cold mud all at once.

The horn blows.

-------------------------------------------------

“Come on you killers, on me!” You snarl, the Cloak of Command amplifying your voice and the Blackthorn armour giving it a sinister twist.

You leap over the stone wall and charge down the hill, screaming your defiance at the bewildered enemy. You don't spare a glance behind you, so there's no way for you to realise that the majority of the Company found assailing the waist high fence in full armour to be more of a challenge than you did.

For a full 5 seconds all the Tassenland forces see is one lone figure charge down the hill towards them. Even then they're rooted to the spot, already in disarray when you crash into they're ranks but they manage to get into formation to meet the majority of the Company's charge.

Your two-handed blade rears up, ready to slice into the meat in front of you.

At the last moment you switch your overarm swing into a slicing side-swipe, catching the first unfortunate soldier square in the midriff and spraying those behind him with blood.

One of the privates staggers back under the dying weight of their comrade, the other jabs forward with their pike only to elicit a screech of pain as you kick their kneecap in entirely the wrong direction.

Meanwhile the battle around you begins in earnest as the ambushers crash into the column's lines.

That last one was cutting it close.

>Tassenland Column lost 3 Discipline! [3/6]
> Push Forward! (You have gained a Battle Buddy)

The screams of pain, cries for help, shouted orders… it all blurs into one deafening cacophony. It’s quickly apparent that the provincial forces are outmatched, you feel rather than see the surge as a large portion of the column staggers back, those not giving ground being trampled underfoot. The success has given you a little breathing space, you notice a figure in comfortably familiar black in your peripheral vision, hacking away at your opponents as well.

Attack! Attack! Attack! With a spring in your leap belonging to a man ten years younger you dive into the group of soldiers facing you. The private who stumbled before attempts to block your swing to no avail, your blade carves through the wooden shaft of his pike and deep in between his neck and shoulder.

You kicked aside the one clutching his knee as another leaps out at you, too slow to stop you ducking under his guard and thrusting your blade up his guts to the hilt. Perhaps seeing his chance the last one swings a blade at you but doesn't spot the knife in your left hand until it's already buried in his eye-socket. He slumps to the ground like a puppet with it's strings cut.

The last soldier is crawling away from you, clutching his knee and sobbing. They have a funny accent for Neumunster these Tassenland, but in this case you can still guess at what he's saying. Begging for help, for God, for his mother. Doesn't matter, no one is listening.

> +1 Black Heart

There's no comrades, gods or mothers for the poor Private today. Just you.

You can't help but think it's always the same as you walk unhurriedly over to the struggling private. Please no, I have a family, a wife, a cute dog. You don't derive any particular pleasure from this, as you plant your boot down on his back, of course not. That would be sick. You have nothing against the fresh-faced recruit and his desire to defend Neumunster against what would certainly appear to be evil incarnate. But it would have been better for all, certainly him, if he had just stayed at home on his farm, or shop or... no, you actually don't care.

The real horror isn't that I enjoy this, or want to do this. Your blade sinks into the base of his neck, with a final quiver the man becomes another mess of meat and hair. It's how little it seems to matter. It all seems so...blase.

Around you the battle rages...

The Battle of Berwick Road
Black Company Victory!

It’s impossible to tell in these things where exactly the breaking point is. Maybe you had nothing to do with it, your brief struggle against half-a-dozen or so opponents just another grim encounter in the whole sorry affair of the battle. Or perhaps it was exactly what was needed, your slaughter starting the trickle of fleeing figures. Within moments you find yourself without and opponent, screams of pain and shouts of anger replaced with moans of the wounded and cheers of victory.

You can see in the distance the routers, not even half their starting number, making for the treeline as the Ranger's pelt them with bolts. It seems the smartest and most cowardly are always the ones to survive these battles, while the brave only die alone and outnumbered. If you had the 12th and 13th Cav not even that lot would have survived, but as it is you doubt they’ll ever be coming back for more.

The line of dead stretches along the road. You spot a few scattered broken figures in black, but the vast majority of the dead seem to wear the green and yellow of the Tassenland Province uniform. Likely the provincial muster making its way to wherever the Imperial forces are regrouping. A fresh batch of green recruits that, thanks to you, will never reach the muster point. A good day’s dark work all told.

Sergeant Bad Hand nods as he approaches you, drawn sword still coloured dark red.

“Sir.”

“Don’t call me that. Not you.” You find yourself grimacing at the reminder of your new rank.

“Hrmm.” Bad Hand attempts a chuckle that quickly dies off. “I’ll try not to, my friend. Can’t be helped sometimes.”

It’s odd. Usually you can’t get the boisterous nutter to shut up about a battle, what he did and who he killed. But he’s barely said anything.

“This lot were green. Most of ‘em barely kids, looks like.”

Bad Hand has a strange look on his face as he stares down the road by your side, almost sad. The otherwise picturesque countryside is marred by this little slice of carnage, scattered individuals stalk about the fallen picking over corpses or silencing wounded.

“Prince. Are we… bad men?”

Ah, so that’s it. You’ve heard quite a few unnerving things in your time, but few match up to the tiredness in Bad Hand’s voice.

"Badder than most, maybe. We're no saints, friend. That said, no one is."

Bad Hand nods. Then frowns a little.

"But what abo-"
"Okay, she's an exception but that's her fekking nickname!"

Sergeant Bad Hand laughs so much he has to wipe the snot from his nose. He breathes in and out deeply. You join the main body of men, marching down the self-same road the Tassenland recruits were massacred behind you not moments before.

"Casualties?" You ask, though by all accounts it seems minimal for your side.
"None." Bad Hand is grinning again, a good sign. "A few lads from 3rd and 4th went down, but our lot pulled through without a scratch."
"Excellent, what abou- oh." Trooper Kid runs up behind you and passes you a pouch that clinks pleasantly. "Cheers"

Best thing about this whole officer-gig. You don't have to loot the corpses yourself, and you trust Kid to only marginally rip you off.
>Gained 17 Silver

"Alright, Prince." Bad Hand claps you on the back for emphasis. "Time we were about sorting out our mess of a Platoon."

"Someone I need to talk to first." Bad Hand grunts and the two of you pass the rest of the march in casual conversation and bad jokes.

Saint signed her name in the presence of the Annalist within the hour of waking up in the West Balllroom. She didn’t tell you, or any of your squad either. One moment officially the enemy, the next in your uniform saying the words. You didn’t need to explain the situation, she didn’t give you a chance and you guess the alternative to her placement with the Black Company was fairly obvious.I suppose someone so used to wielding phenomenal cosmic power for most of their life would find helplessness to be a little… jarring.

You pause a moment outside the tent she’s staying in, hearing a rustle from the inside. She wouldn’t be undressed right after a battle, right? Even so, modesty has no place out in the field. Obviously it could just be one of her tent-mates. You could try knocking. On a tent? Idiot. What is wrong with you. You never noticed or cared if you walked in on Trooper Schuster half-naked. And you can’t just announce yourself like some pompous fek. Still…

----------------------------------

> “Ahem. Ah-HEM.” Fake coughing should give them a chance to [Clever]

> “…” She’s not for lewd obviously. Still, just a peek… [Experience]

> “Saint, I’ve been meaning to speak with you.” Just walk right in like you own the place. You pretty much do anyway. [Courage]

> “Trooper Saint, report to the Platoon Command Tent in 2 minutes.” Play it safe, loud and distant. [Elite]
>>
>>334312
>"Actually..." Ask Page #136 where your bloody dragon has gotten to.

And I'm fine with using the deployment posted last thread. It puts people we trust in positions of power, and leaves the rest of the positions filled.

And Mask didn't win the duel by skill, it won by being an unholy abomination and ignoring mortal wounds. P. is more skilled and can actually lead men, being able to talk and all.

But by all means, if everyone else wants to spend the rest of this thread arguing about every single posting instead of playing the quest, let's do it.

Can always nonchalantly apologize and walk out, nothing we haven't seen in the whole width and breadth of our time in the company. Or at least that's how we'll act until we're outside the flap again before our blush kicks in.

oh shit I forgot about our cutie patootie saint

is it bad I kinda want our development to go along the line of anti-croaker (inverse croaker?) Like in the same way Croaker became more and more ruthless and less of a softie (both to protect Lady but also because she was straight up evil and he ended up becoming more like her) except for us Saint becoming our moral compass, with us still being ruthless/pragmatic enough that our men come first, but her moralizing making our rough edges softer or something

though I guess stabbing that kid in the back while he crawled away wasn't a great start

I hope joining the company and renouncing her past hasn't broken her too far

“Saint, I’ve be meaning to-“ Dark Fekking Father Fek Me “speak with you.” Your voice turns into something to a squeak at that last bit, but she doesn’t seem to notice. Too busy trying to put a clean clothes on.

The pale smooth skin, the toned tight torso, the well-conditioned limbs showing just the merest hint of a scar here and there. And more than a glimpse of the vast… tracts of land before it’s covered. T damp skin causes the whole black shirt to press up against her, clinging to the mountainous landscape.

Drawing your reserve of willpower you reassert eye-contact with her breastsface. Eye-contact. Face.

“Does it still hurt?” You ask, nodding at her hand.

"Hurt?” She looks down, as if just noticing her fiddling, quickly hiding her maimed hand behind her back. “Not really, sir, but I feel like it’s still there.”

“It happens” You say with a shrug. “If you piss Subaltern Igus from Supply off enough he’ll try to kick you, and he hasn’t had legs in, uh…”

You stop yourself continuing the doubtlessly entertaining anecdote, not wanting to see that crestfallen look on Saint again. But she doesn’t look sad at all, at least not from the plight of poor Subaltern Igus. Maybe her time in the dungeons inured her somewhat to the misfortunes of others.

“How are you fitting in?” With this pack of murderers, brigands and thieves that I call family? “With the squad?”

“Well enough… sir.” She glances away for a moment. “Some trouble, issues were resolved… differently in the Guard.”

You look over to her cot, sheathed blade concealing the masterwork meteorite blade within. You know it hasn’t shone for her ever since you left Sarsburg…

Though the Chevalisse worship a higher being, faith has always been a private matter for Neumunster. The 'Saints' are simply vaunted individuals, both living or dead, the secrets of their power known only to the various orders that have them.

>Her sword won't work of she doesnt -beleive- anymore.

oh sweet. So hypothetically, even if her schtick was 'defend the weak', if we could...channel that faith in a different direction and find her a cause to believe in again, then she'd get her lightsaber back?

hm. Several routes to work this. Could try to channel her drive into backing the company full stop; ie truth and justice failed her, but with the company she'll never fight alone, so rather than faith in the righteousness of her cause, faith in her brotherhood/comradeship

alternatively, could try to could make her more of a pragmatist. We may be the bad guys, but if she sticks with us and works her way up, she could still do good in the world (especially if she can mitigate the damage we do, or temper it to some degree)

Be kinda cool to have her develop as a kiritsugu type, breaking eggs to make an omlette, taking on the burdens of the world to make it a better place, even if it means she has to do bad things, or work with bad people. Especially if she's a super competent fighter in terms of skills and has supernatural abilities of some sort

You look at the the mess of 3rd Squad's tent, then back to the downcast Saint.

"Pack your shit, Trooper." Chucking her bag at her.

"Sir?" She obliges, gathering her scant items as she gives you a questioning look. Her ill-fitting shirt sliding down one should-GAH pull yourself together man!

"You'll be bunking next to the Platoon Command tent from here on in. I need someone attached there." You look her up and down, as if you haven't already made your decision "A good fighter, someone to off-load paperwork on. A promising leader maybe, or perhaps just someone less of a bastard than I am." You shoot her a grin which she shyly returns. The orphans incident is still a sore point between you, but the fact you brought along Legless Jessica and foisted her on some Supply assistant duties did well to make up for it.

"Sir!" Saint puffs out her chest as she salutes you, all her worldly items all packed and ready to go.

"Ahem. Dismissed, Trooper."

What's wrong with you? You've never let someone's sex affect you when it comes to your comrades. Apart from judging who is more likely to go for the crotch shot maybe.

You come to the conclusion that...

Hmph. Women. Can't live with them, and you can certainly manage without them. Maybe the damn Wildborn were on to something at least that way you wouln't be so... so...torn?

Lost deep in your internal worrying you absentmindedly pluck a cigarette from Trooper Kid’s mouth and flick it off into the rushes. Ignoring their righteous indignation you scour the camp for Page #136. The mountain of teeth and scales, Asgorga would be hard to miss, putting it lightly. Most reliable person to find out where the flying, speaking, Carnotaur ran off to is #136. On top of that he's a suitably unsypmathetic target to vent yiur frustration on.

“Now where is that sinister little-“

“Oh my, the newly-promoted Lieutenant Prince.” Page #136’s smile is distinctly shark-like as he approaches. “Didn’t I say something about you having the scent of destiny about you?”

“Speak of the devil…” you mutter under your breath before putting on an unconvincing wide smile “One-Three-Six! How -are- you? Your sister not pulling your hair or anything too much?”

“Eighty-Nine is fine, thank you. Much too busy too concern herself with the menial undertakings of you flesh-sacks, but I’m sure she will appreciate your kind thoughts.” Page #136 has always been good at blurring the line between joke and threat.

“Hmph. Sure she will. Where’s my dragon?”

“Your dragon?”

“My dragon.”

“Before I answer you must-“

“Fek off, One-Three-Six, where is he?”

“Well, once they were done with the execution of the Imperial Family…”Awfully nasty affair apparently. You’re quite glad you missed it. Still, such a prominent hostage would have come in handy… “The Unbound was sent on reconnaissance.”

“Reconnaissance? With a dragon?”

“Yes.”

“Bit big to be a scout, isn’t he?” You press on before he can answer that “What is he looking for anyway?”

“Apparently there’s been some development with the Warlord and the Wild King, one is ascendant and the other on the back-foot due to the efforts of the Free Alliance. The Warlord…”

We dont have an agenda, they're both enemies of ours. Vote for whatever you think will be more fun.

I think fighting humies is more fun than fighting monsters.

I like skalds more than paladins.

Paladins was Neu. We already beat them.

Personally I feel like "barbarian horde" has been beaten so much there's nothing left but a pile of broken horse bones. I'd much rather have "evil woodland god"

Neumunster had 'Saints'. The Heigelen Guard of a professional, aristocratic order.

Chevalisse Paladins are something else entirely.

I guess I'm blind.

Goddamn I love this quest. Nothing quite like being apart of mercenary band partaking in pillaging and battles.

I was thinking more along the lines of "who are the next good guys we're going to face".

Once we make that dragon our bitch we should totes make it a fucking Sergeant under our command.

Ain't nobody going to fuck around or try to cheat a goddamn dragon when it's your boss.

And plus, putting it under our command in the annals would be fucking sweet.

That plan has a 0% chance of succeeding.

Failing will be funny. And you never know. the dice may favor us.

That is really dumb.

Just chiming in to say that I'm trying to catch up from the archives, and I'm really enjoying this quest so far.

Remember the Warlord and the Wild King are both JUST as bad as the Necromancer. there's 3 evil empires and like 5 "good guys" on this continent.
That report was on how the other evil empires are doing, not on who we're fighting next.

This puts the Free Alliance in a better position, I think, which means more work for us.
