The cards are cool in your hands as you shuffle them one last time. Cutting the deck one handed you use your thumb to lay out the first three cards, all in a pretty row. Leaning back in your chair you consider the possibilities before you. They are not infinite, but they can lead to infinity. Distinct possibilities leading to a fractal universe of potentials, the infinite grey between darkness and light, order and chaos, stability and entropy.

You're old enough t leave home, but not old enough to be an acceptable marriage partner, if you could even consider such a thing possible. Certainly your parents do, but your father is off doing his own thing, while your mother....well, she's been dead for quite a while. As you understand it killed by betrayal, dropped into the abyss, and irrecoverable. The man who killed her was thrown into the abyss after her, and the way the other elders of your family speak of him that is a very good thing.

Madness, it seems, is part of your lineage.

Still, you have three real avenues of interest at the moment, and you're just distracting yourself before you have t make a real choice and move on with your life. You've completed your elementary training, and mastered the one thing that makes you the child of your parents; now it's time to put your skills to some real use and gain some real experience. Maybe discover love, rule a world, or do something memorable. Or maybe arrange for someone else to do something memorable, rule a world, or find love. Infinity in a hand of cards.

You pick up the first of the three cards you dealt, looking at the back of it. Stylized in black and white, the pasteboard playing card has some real heft to it. You focus your mind upon it and feel the card become cold in your hand, the sensation of its power unmistakable. Time to begin.

[] You crafted these, created the art upon them, and infused them with their power yourself. They are the gates to everywhere, and to the minds of those they depict. All you need is a clear image of who, where, or what....and even if they do not yet exist, they will. Because Your Will Trumps All. Main stat: Psyche.
[] You were given these, because everyone is given them; they were a gift only. Your true power lies in the use of the Pattern, the manipulation of that which lies between order and chaos: the infinity of Shadow and all that is possible. Because You Play With The Pattern. Main Stat: Strength.
[] You brought these out of the grey of infinite Shadow by desire and strength. Your true power is that of the unpredictable, shifting impossibility of raw chaos, the mother of all that is: the Logrus. Your reach is infinite, your imagination the only limit to your power. Because The Logus Obeys. Main Stat: Warfare.
[] You took these from someone who foolishly thought you were weaker than they were. You get that a lot, but things change. Well, really, YOU change; you Shapechange, to be precise. And while it's a fairly common ability, you've taken it to extreme lengths. Lengths no sane or stable person would dare consider, and gained incredible, impossible power through it. Because Change Is Necessary. Main Stat: Endurance.

>Most Votes wins true mastery of the power chosen; runner up becomes a secondary power that is still considered to be starting average for your people.
>You are also a magician and a technician of passable skill levels, as well as having a broad educational base. The mind of Stephen Hawkins with the training of a Special Air Services troop with the advantages of space age technology and magic readily available to you. You are technically a polymath, but unfortunately so is everyone that you know, so that's no great advantage.
>You are heir to great power and your family is one of the most highly placed; actual details will be chose as the adventure continues. You are an only child as far as you know....but you are well aware that your family is seriously likely to have by-blows, bastards, and you might even have siblings. You do know your father loved your mother, but that doesn't mean either of them didn't sleep around a whole lot – they're older than they look!
>You are functionally ageless. Not immortal – only ageless (admittedly you still look to be in your late teens, because by the standards of your society that's exactly what you are). Fortunately, you are bred from the hardiest of stock; it would take Ebola to give you the symptoms of a mild cold, you can roll a car over unassisted, and you would make most super-soldier projects weep in frustration with your levels of endurance and resilience.

[X] Shapeshifting, Rank 1 Endurance.
You can literally fight all-out for weeks without rest. You can recover from nearly any injury without using your powers. You can outdrink anyone except some of your elders (and sme of them as well!) You would be able to satisfy entire orgies by yourself (if you'd ever had sex). (You've been busy. Really. Studies. Yeah. Sure.)
[x] Trump, Rank 3 Psyche. You posses a keen intellect and powerful magical potentials. Another would be hard pressed to read your thoughts even with magic or power. You have an innate understanding of the mind and with great effort you can impress your will upon others without the use of magic, if they are untrained. The Tao makes sense to you.
[] Pattern, potentially; Amber ranked Strength. The strongest human ever might be a challenger, and woe to those who assume your build is indicative of your strength. A large vehicle might be trouble to roll over, but you can reposition a small one with effort nd no harm to yourself.
[] Logrus, potentially; Amber Ranked Warfare. The most keen military intellects are your playmates. Strategy and tactics are well within your grasp and you understand Sun Tzu intimately.
Rankings are from 1>2>3>4>5>Amber>Chaos>Human.

You let the power fade; you're not quite ready to reach into the unknown just yet without taking a look at what you are getting into. You flip the card over, and are presented with the image of a station in space, a backdrop of stars and an alien world. A space ship or star cruiser or giant robotic device is depicted. A world of technology and advanced sciences. Promising, and potentially interesting. You don't know if aliens are involved, but your ability to shapeshift gives you plenty of opportunities to explore those avenues if they come up, certainly.

You can certainly hold you own in a technological environment; you have the equivalent of several doctorates and degrees, compared to most who dwell between the Gold and the Black. Then again, it is a brave new world; you don't have any control over where the cards take you when there is a location depicted, only whether or not to access them. On the plus side, you're capable of crafting these things yourself, so you won't be stranded either.

Leaning back you pick up the second card, studying the design on the back. The previous owner could have made them, but you doubt it. They were more likely a gift, or even just picked up. Decks such as this are not uncommon; on the other hand, these locations are not typical for most decks. They usually depict places within the immediate influence of the Pattern or the Logrus. You yourself can craft Trump Cards, and a bit more than merely cards. The style is careful, intricately detailed even for pasteboard despite the maker using only black ink. A lot of care went into making this deck, and it surprises you that the oaf you took it from had it at all.

Probably stolen by him in the first place.

You take a deep breath, and flip the card over, studying the new picture. Flowing robes, a slender blade, outstretched hand. A young woman, unarmored yet clearly a warrior, in flamboyant clothing. Her eyes are almond shaped and the art style is fluid and sleek, as opposed to the intricate details of the previous card. Martial arts; you're quite familiar with a multitude of them, and no slouch (though to be perfectly honest you're better at the internal aspects of it). Still, she seems interesting, and you wonder how your meeting with her will turn out. You reach for the final card....

>Choose two.
[] Words of Power: Even in a world without magic, your own life force can power certain words; while multiple uses of the same word have diminishing effect, the variety of them means you'll be able to mange a number of minor but useful effects.
[] Mage: You are not just a student of magic – your bloodline carries a great deal of magic on its own. Crafting spells an understanding how magic works in various Shadows is a great boon, though it is useless in Shadows where magic does not exist.
[] Conjurer: Something of a misnomer, you do not literally conjure things from nowhere....you use your own innate powers of Shapechanging and Trump to build items of great potency. And like all true, real power, it doesn't matter where you are, they will work effectively, regardless of the technology (or lack thereof!) your creations are made with.
[] Artifacts: Like magic, technology is not always available in every Shadow – the rules of physics can change from one shadow to the next just as easily as the rules of magic can be changed. You own a few incredible pieces of technology from deep in the Shadows, items made with advanced technology. While some of the stranger shadows can play havoc with them they are nevertheless incredibly useful.

[X] Conjuration
[X] Artifacts

You run your fingers over the edges of the third card as it lies face down upon the table. One of the more interesting decisions is how much of what you are to hide. While you are a step up from your classmates and fellow aristocrats in one or two ways, by and large you are mostly average. The fact that you have neither traversed the Logrus or walked the Pattern is unusual, but hardly remarkable. Trump serves well enough to move where you need to go; you have a number of cards you added to this deck yourself, though none of these three are your make.

It is your very well kept secret that you don't actually need the power of Trump, Logrus or Pattern to move through Shadow. You are capable of Shapeshifting not merely your body, but your mind and spirit as well. You can literally become a creature able to move through the Shadows between the Pattern and the Logrus, the entirety of infinite worlds. Your blood can be made a living thing, your knowledge of both life and mind equal to the task of crafting living flesh from your own. You can mold your own flesh like clay; conceal, if not actually heal wounds; and become the fundamental elements of magical creation. Or technological creation, if you put your mind to it – flesh and blood can be ceramic and wire, for a while.

As long as you keep your mind intact.

The power of Trump....it is both psychic in nature, and creative. You focus on the image, feel the power, and what you behold becomes open to you. A person can be spoken with, and even be transported to you, or the opposite. A place can be walked to. You can, in a pinch, craft a sketch which can temporarily be empowered enough to do these things, unlike most people who use the power of Trump. More importantly, the power of it can fill your body and mind, make you a indestructible as the Trump Cards themselves as long as you concentrate. With great effort, you can imbue an image into object other than cards or sketches, creating an object with a connection to a person or place that can be used as a Trump Card could be.

Flipping over the lat card, you see the image of a mystic circle, one used for summoning. Harmless of course, in this form. You place the card next to it's brethren and let your fingertips rest on the edge of it, feeling the cool power start to flow. The place it takes you to is in fact that circle, and you can sense the power in it. However it is not a binding circle – even your modicum of magic training tells you that. You would appear within it and be free to do as you wish. But it is most certainly a world where magic holds sway. Such a place is really the sort of place you would fit into really well, given your nature as a denizen of the real lands outside of Shadow; your artifacts might not fare well, but there are a couple which would be useful at least.

Of course, it might be fun to play into someone else's grand adventure rather than have your own. You wouldn't be the first of your relatives to play an angel's role or devil's advocate. One of your classmates actually went so far as to create a dynasty of puppets just so he could play at being the great evil for them to overcome as part of a philosophy lesson. Humanity's great strength, he called it. You wonder how they're doing now that he's left that Shadow.

You sigh softly, and look at the three cards before you.

So how many ranks are there for the abilities?

Potential -> Basic -> Advanced -> ???
>>
>>3674
For the Powers - the four main powers - there are Basic, Advanced, and Mastery.

Each is an order of magnitude more powerful than the one before (that a 1-10-100 difference).

The rankings are also set in stone. There is no other person with Rank 1 in Endurance or Rank 3 in Psyche. The highest anyone can go is Rank 1.5 in Endurance, forever missing your mark. Likewise, you can go to Rank 2.5 in Psyche, but never reach 2, or up to 1.5, and never reach 1. The only exception are elders - they can be much more powerful than you. Others in your class are comparable in stats, but if there is anyone with an advanced power, you haven't met them yet.

Corollary to this is you never know what you might come up against in shadow - you, unlike those with Logrus or Pattern - have very little control over what a shadow you select contains, unless you use Trump to 'build' a Shadow Of Your Desire (which costs Stuff). It is entirely possible you might meet people and things as strong or stronger than you are, or that make exceptions to your abilities. On the other hand, you're more capable than any Shadow dweller to cope with such things, simply because you're aware of that fact.

Now writing.

[X] Adventures in Science Fiction.
[X] Ask the advice of your favorite servant. She's never judged you.

You've always enjoyed the intricacies of the scientific. The ways physics affected the Shadows they exist within, or vice versa. Sometimes the line is too fine to be certain of which worked upon which.

Reaching past the cards arrayed upon your desk you pick up the shining metal cylinder that stands near some of the books you have been studying most recently. Its weight is comforting, and the knowledge that even in most worlds where technology fails this device can be brought to bear against your enemies is comforting. You can feel the cool, intense power of Trump flowing through the device; an infinite, inexhaustible, indestructible power source which has the pleasant side effect of making the weapon itself indestructible. It slips inside your pocket easily.

Almost as potent is the dagger you typically carry at your back. Unlike the weapon, the dagger is simply a machine. Well, a lot of machines, really, given that it is in truth a nanotech multi-tool. It looks like a dagger because everyone carries a dagger. Pretty basic technique for hiding something in plain sight. The only problem is in some worlds where technology fails, it will either remain a dagger, or melt into a blob of viscous stuff. Or in some tech worlds, go absolutely haywire, though you've since learned how to detect those before stepping into them. This card isn't one of those, which is good.

Finally, your clothing is of materiel far more advanced than those available to the world you're contemplating visiting. Though it appears contemporary for your home, it is in fact made of femtocarbonweave, making it absolutely impenetrable and lighter than it has any right to be. With a secondary nanoceramic weave, it will also ablate energy to a good extent, whether from beam weaponry or balls of eldritch lightning and fire. It has saved your life and concealed your skills on several occasions.

It is also waterproof and stain resistant!

Despite these things, you still find yourself assailed with doubts. Or perhaps you just want to say goodbye to someone who might actually miss you. You sweep the cards into your hand and place the space station on top, before tucking it into the pouch you made for them (not coincidentally made of the same material as much of your clothing, for exactly the same reasons). Rising from your desk, you unlock your door and step out onto the balcony looking over the foyer of your small, but very personal manse.

It's attached to your family manse, of course, but in all reality it truly is your own set of rooms attached to a foyer that opens out into the great hall off your parent's manse. You have a small cadre of servants, a few cooks, and a butler, as well as three personal guards, though they answer first to your father then to you. You also have Olive.

Olive is a maid. Not even the head maid. She's simply a chambermaid, tidying, dusting, doing laundry, and otherwise being useful, productive, and generally quiet. Unlike the other maids and servants, she never avoided talking to you or treated you entirely like an aristocrat. She always answered your questions and smiled at you, and was never bothered by your occasional bouts of temper. She also isn't afraid of you, which counts for much more than any of the other things.

Closing your eyes, you imagine her face, her eyes, her smile; you consider her clothing, the smell of cleansers and polishes. Her studious effort as she reaches up to dust the upper set of books in the library.

That's where she is.

You make your way to your personal library, which also serves as a study for the rare occasion you brought guests over, and sure enough she is there, stepping down from the rolling ladder. Turning, Olive smiles at you, and curtsies. “What may I do for you, my leige?”

[] Please walk with me; I would like some advice.

I'll be able to say, "I tried it, and it is _____________."

For instance, ID's remove samefaggotry, but they don't prevent or forestall vote change. Text support has no real purpose as of yet, and while pretty may be relatively pointless as a draw. The ability for anyone to draw so far has been useless, and it will take a better artist than I to get any real use out of the poor thing.

And as for blaming it all on me....that's nothing i have heard before, Drawfags ruin /tg/, edition wars ruined /tg/, /wst/ ruined /tg/, quests ruined /tg/, it all their fault, never the person saying so.

Actually, the very fact you bothered to say THIS blows my mind. I've seen quests run on /b/, and so have the mods. They know just as well as you do, quests can be run anywhere.

The question is can quests be sustained on a board without the support network and player base that /tg/ provides? I am fairly certain I have players only because of twitter tonight.

Anyone in this thread brand new to questing?
>>
>>3960
Considering that the board isn't even listed I doubt anyone here is new to quests. You might have someone new to yours, however.

I think most of those who would be into quests would have sought them out already. When /qst/ is public we make get more curious folk dropping by. With a greater variety of quests appealing to more people we might get more cross pollination and activity everywhere.

Alternatively, the user base could slowly wither away and the board will die. We'll see.

[X] Please walk with me; I would like some advice.
[X] Close the door to the {library} and, pour drinks for yourself and her.

The cool blue eyes of the young woman gaze at you without judgment or concern, as you gently take her dusting-wand away from her and set it aside. “Please walk with me for a while. I would like to ask your advice about something.” Bemusement really doesn't count as a negative reaction as far as your concerned, you've received worse more often than not. She places her cowl over her head and places her hands within her sleeves, looking for all the world like a penitent. Unlike most servants her head is held high, and she is utterly unconcerned about being seen with you or accompanying you to wherever you may feel like taking her.

Even though you understand perfectly well why the others treat you like they do, it is still unpleasant. There are drawbacks to having as empathetic and potent a mind as your own.

Most of the other servants in your quarters are busy, but you can feel their glances, and are perfectly aware of how they judge you, judge Olive. Olive has never complained or mentioned any problems with the other servants, which is either a testament to her generous and good nature, or a testament to the fact that she is more than what she seems. You've never had doubts about her loyalty, and you certainly have enjoyed having her around, and even during the most stringently vicious parts of your teaching, you've never found the slightest hint that she's anything but a slightly exotic servant who genuinely likes you as a liege.

“I am going on my sabbatical shortly, Olive, and I'll be away for some time. I don't know exactly how long, to be honest – it could be moments, or it could be decades. Or longer.” She walks with you across the balcony and down the steps, your boots making sharp clicking sounds that echo from the glass panes of the vaulted ceiling, her own making only soft creaking sounds in the empty foyer.

“Your first sabbatical, my liege....that is a daunting prospect for many. I do not believe you among those.” She keeps your sedate pace easily. “How may I assist you in these matters?”

[X] These are my choices....
[x] Would you accompany me?

“I have decided upon three different....locations, to test myself. Each has it's merits....” You explain the basics of each of the three worlds upon which you will inflict your presence. Well, perhaps 'worlds is being a little humble. Universes might be more accurate. One, of course, is highly technologically advanced, the kind of place you've enjoyed before, but this time you'll be going until you've accomplished something you consider noteworthy. (This comment has the side effect of making Olive smile, as she considers you too humble for your own safety.) Your magical skills are not necessary there, but there would be no barrier to your powers of course. At least one of your artifacts is far beyond their capacity, but you needn't worry about corrupting them unduly – they're Shadows, after all, and not real in the slightest. You would have to work hard at achieving something truly worthwhile in such a place of advanced science, which is where the challenge lies.

The portal to the young warrior-woman is intriguing, if only because you would be meeting and relying upon her to bring you through immediately. Your sense of that Shadow is one of conflict and a richness of history and vibrant activity, with elements of the supernatural and mystical, but nothing so potent as true magic. Your artifacts will work perfectly well there, and your minimal magical training should serve also, but it would most certainly be a test of your martial and physical skills. To be perfectly honest, while you're quite possibly the most stubborn and insanely bullheaded opponent anyone has ever faced while armed or unarmed, you really are just average at all forms of combat and warfare. It could be a valuable learning experience; you'd be a match for most anyone you meet – except the chances of this young woman being a mere Shadow-dweller are slim to none, and chances are she isn't facing off against simple warriors either.

The third, and not your favorite, is a world of magic. You have the opportunity to literally become anyone, anything there, and see what trouble you can stir up. The potentials are staggering, it's almost as bad as when you narrowed it down to just these three out of nearly infinite Shadows. On the other hand, someone created that circle, which while no trap, is a bit unusual of a location to have in a deck of Trumps; it must be significant for some reason. So chances of running into your own ilk there are even higher than the other two. There is also the fact that at least one of your artifacts will be useless, and quite possibly two – your clothing may or may not function as intended there. Your weapon, being an object of Real Power, will work perfectly. Of course, the opportunity to just ~play~ is extremely enticing....

Olive smiles as you unlock the conservatory, and step aside to allow her in. She enters, and you quietly shut the door behind you. She turns, a faint question in her eyes, but nothing frightened or accusatory in her gaze or expression. You smiles and gesture to a comfortable seat. “Please sit with me. I enjoy your company, and it may be a long time before I see you again.” It might not have to be, of course....what an interesting thought.

Though she doesn't blush, she does curtsy, and sits delicately at the edge of a seat. Stepping over to the bar, you open a decanter of very fine brandy, one from a shadow nearby and touched by reality. “If you do not mind, my liege, may I ask if you prefer the Gold or the Black? Your heritage is mixed well, so you could eventually try for a position in either, but it seems to me that this should color your choices somewhat.”

She has a point – the Pattern and the Logrus, ever at odds and with all Shadow between them are equal parts yours to progress through, if you are of a mind to do so. The Golden Circle are those Shadows close enough to partake in the power of the Pattern of Amber, order and control, though the rulers of that place are even more fractious and insane than those of the Courts of Chaos, where the Black Circle rests like madness-filled delirium worshiping and supporting the keepers of the Logrus.

[] You would one day like to travel to the Golden Circle, and see the halls of your father, and perhaps see what can be learned there.
[] To eventually travel the Black Circles and see the sorts of places your mother enjoyed and thrived in would be your choice.
[] To be honest, you would rather forge your fortune in Shadow – this sabbatical is only a stepping stone, and there are secrets beyond those known....there must be.
[] Both are filled with aristocrats and politicians and if you actually marriageable, you might give a damn.

[X] To be honest, you would rather forge your fortune in Shadow – this sabbatical is only a stepping stone, and there are secrets beyond those known....there must be.

You hand her the glass of dark brandy, and she smiles, ducking her head in thanks. You settle into the seat opposite her, and sigh softly, sipping the potent liquor. “I do not prefer either. I decided some time ago my path....my strength must be found elsewhere, outside the realms of either Amber or Chaos. The Power I possess now is not enough, no, but it is mine, and mine alone. It can be emulated, duplicated even, but nothing can truly be me, and nothing can truly create what I create.” She smiles warmly, her eyes shimmering beneath her hood.

“There should be other Power out there, somewhere. There have been rumors of Power, there always are – the sources that grant their power to the Spikard Rings, the Living Trump....there must be others out there in Shadow, secrets unfound as yet. I do not wish to be a pawn to either the Logrus or the Pattern or their masters. If I am to make my own way I will simply have to find other avenues of exploration.” Her smile brightens and you feel your ears burn a little. “What?”

“You answer your own question, my liege. Though the mysteries of magic entice you, and you have worked long and hard to achieve your Power, magic is not a true Power. And while you may not be the fearsome warrior or great master at arms of your ilk, nor as strong or swift, neither are you weak or unskilled. So you have no place among the mystical warriors.” She sips the fine brandy, her eyes closing as she savors the rare taste. When they open they are filled with kindness and not a little admiration. “You must explore, my liege, and explore far and deep, with tools that can serve far better than mortal instrument may possess. The answers you seek must be found with knowledge arcane, but not mystic.”

Her logic is impeccable, and you smile, shaking your head, embarrassed that she had to tell you what you really already knew. You look up, meeting her eyes, and you feel a twinge, deep in your heart. “Olive....Oliviana. Would you do me the kindness....of accompanying me on my sojourn? I do not like to think of you left to mind the books and scatter the dust. You would be safe with me, and it would be a pleasure to have you with me.”

You can see her answer before you finish the question, but you make your way through. If you must suffer a rebuke, however kind it is, let it be a rebuke you earned properly.
>>
>>5678
Through she lowers her gaze, there is no blush, no shame. Only a soft sadness that gnaws at your heart far worse than the fear, revulsion, or disdain you have come to expect. And when she lifts her eyes, there are none of those things in her at all. If she were born of your ilk, blood of Amber or Chaos, she might have the skill to hide such from you, intent as you are upon her. She is not, and you are certain that her answer is as earnest as it sounds.

“My liege....I am a servant, and though it pains me to refuse, I must do so. Not because I am a servant, nor because you are my liege, but because I am a person of no great strengths, no great power. I would at best merely be your shadow, and at worst endanger you with my ignorance and my unskilled ways.” Oliviana sets the brandy aside, and rises slowly to her feet; when you start to rise she steps forward swiftly and goes to one knee. “No, my liege. You do my an honor....an honor I do not deserve only because I am weak. And you must be strong, to become stronger.”

It hurts to hear her say it, but there are two simple truths: she is being honest with you, and she cares about you dearly.

[X] I understand, Olive.
[X] Then instead you must serve better.

It isn't a great leap of logic, or even mild intuition to understand where she is coming from. She may be Real, but she isn't nobility. The blood of the Serpent and the blood of the Unicorn does not flow through her veins.

(You're honestly not quite sure what went through your mind when you discovered that was neither an allegory nor a metaphor, but a fact-based truth. Certainly, it was some five to seven generations back, but still!)

You smile and set you own glass aside, taking her hand in yours and rising while assisting her. “Only a fool would not understand Olive.” You take her other hand in yours and kiss her knuckles lightly, head bowed and eyes closed. The frisson of girlish delight that washes off of her is wonderful, despite the differences in your true ages. You lower your hands, though her fingers remain linked with yours, lightly. You look into her shining blue eyes and smile. “You are right. It was, perhaps, just a wishful thought. But it was well meant, and it was an honest offer. Perhaps one day we may travel together.” You step back a little and she graciously moves further away so you don't have to do so with her crowding you.

“However,” you begin sternly as you walk towards the door, “if you will not serve as a companion in my travels, then you will serve another way.” You stringently avoid looking at her, because you know she'll be smiling that gentle, understanding smile of hers that makes you wish you could even try to intimidate her and mean it. She knows you too well, does Oliviana; but that is what makes her the most important person in your life currently.

You walk out into the foyer, and the two servants there – one replacing the sword that hangs from your family coat of arms, the other carefully wiping down the family crystals in their display cabinet without removing them from their settings – look up at you. “Mazanscheere!” Your butler – who serves as your major domo as well, as your staff is not large enough to require both – quickly steps forward from his post by the exit of the foyer into the dining room. Gesturing to Olivia, you force her to step quickly over to where you and he stand.

“Mazanscheere, Oliviana is to be trained in the duties of Housekeeper under your guidance. Upon completion, you may accept a promotion to Head Steward, or request to be placed in a position of equal standing with any relative or household I can manage to find for you if you wish to leave my service at that time.” Olivia's alarm is quite genuine, but you're in stride and she knows her place too well to protest aloud. Which you hope will change quickly. Mazan has been a boon while you were at school; but school is over now, and he deserves to be bettered if you can manage it.

“My liege,” your butler protests in a bass rumble from behind his mask, “I serve at your pleasure alone, but I am not certain I have the authority to train a Head Housekeeper under your father's roof, even if she is yours rather than his.” You know he's perfectly capable of performing the tasks required – he is trained to be a steward, and only the fact that you have no current landing prevents him from actually being one.

[] When I return there will be important changes that will require both positions filled.
[] This is my roof – I hold title to at least this building until death, and as such, I can command this.
[] ….if needed, I will arrange for my entire household to be moved, possibly to another Shadow.
[] Are you truly going to make me force my father's Head Steward issue you orders?

[X] When I return there will be important changes that will require both positions filled.

“I am going on sabbatical, and I do not know how long I will be.” You look seriously into the crystal and silver covered eyes holds of his mask. “I mean that quite literally, as I have no idea how quickly or slowly – or in which direction – time will be passing. I need my household to stay busy, and I am certain there will be other changes that need to be made, especially considering the suddenness and violence of Oliviana's promotion.” You don't need to glance at the maids who have been working on the same projects for most of this conversation now, but at least one of them tries to sedately walk away. “You will probably want to hire her a companion as well, a maid in waiting, in addition to assisting her in changing her wardrobe to something more appropriate to her station while remaining within her preferences.”

“I know just such a person, my liege. She is also an excellent cook and a professional concerning poisons.”

He is such a good man, he didn't even have to be reminded to watch for poisons. “I defer to your expertise, Mazanscheere.”

“....My liege....I must protest....” Olive begins weakly but you turn to her and give her the most haughty of gazes, daring her to continue. She does of course: “Please, I do not deserve such a position, and I am pleased to remain your simple servant....”

You lift one hand and she stops, her eyes bright and shocked, her hands clasped tightly together. “When I return, I fully expect there to have been changes. If there aren't when I return, there will most certainly be changes after.” Stepping forward, you speak very softly. “As you say, I must seek what I do not have. And what I do not have is a home of my own, with people whom I consider family, with servants who do not fear or abhor me. I will have what I desire, and I desire peace for myself. If that peace must be gained through Power, then so be it. If I cannot be....” Your voice drops an octave as you nearly choke on the words to follow. “....married off, nor married to....I will move beyond those things and become marriageable on my own....merits....rather than those forced upon me.”

Your di sotto voce, meant for only Olive and Mazan, does not carry to the remaining maid, who is closing the cabinet finally.
>>
>>6394
Your di sotto voce, meant for only Olive and Mazan, does not carry to the remaining maid, who is closing the cabinet finally.

Olive is blushing, shamed by your declaration. No, not your declaration – by her reaction to your gift. For it is a gift, of sorts; one she might regret receiving, but the best you can give outside of a gift of Power. You could do that, but all it would do is make her more of a target and the sorts of people who might target her would not be your acquaintances.

These two here are the closest you have to friends, really.

“Please-”

“No, Oliviana. It is very much all right. I am fine.”

[X] Take a most dramatic leave here.
[X] Kiss her hand, salute him, and step outside.

You had fully intended to prepare more than this, but realistically you have everything that you could truly need on your person: a weapon, a set of tools (in the shape of a single common tool), your Trumps, and the clothing you are wearing. Truth be told, you don't truly need all those things – they just make life somewhat easier.

Taking the case of cards from your belt, you slide out the required placard depicting the space station with its planetary backdrop. You then step forward, lifting your hand. Instinctively Oliviana offers you hers, her eyes shimmering. Despite that she smiles for you as you kiss her hand, looking into her eyes with a smile upon your own lips to reassure her. You lower her hand, your fingers linking briefly.

Unlike her, you are perfectly capable of hiding your emotions from the entirety of the Circle.

You turn to your butler-cum-major domo, and salute him sharply. Mazanscheere responds with a bow over one arm, his expressionless mask still giving the impression of pride of place and strength of character. As he rises you step back from them both and turn away lifting the card so they can see the image upon it.

You focus upon that image, and the slow spreading chill of that eldritch power seeps into your body, through the card. The image seems to expand before you, the cool wind that flows from it tasting stale, metallic, and dry. The black and white ink becomes suffused with color, the image becoming more and more blurred as it changes from painting to reality. You step through the image onto plush synthetic fiber carpeting, the crystalline pane before you almost non-reflective and invisible despite it and its twin's thicknesses. The power fades as you transition wholly from your home to the stateroom which you currently occupy.

Turning away from the gas giant that takes up more than a third of the observation window's area, you look at the satin sheets of the especially large bed, the rounded edges of the ceramic desk that has no chair and is depicting a variety of silenced information feeds, the glass panels of the internal hologram screens here and there, and the bottle of wine chilling in an auto-froster on the side-table. You take note of the suit-bag hanging on the windowless door, as well as the presence of a closet across from the standing refresher which frame said door. A smaller dresser sits nearby, with what appears to be amenities available.

Whomever owned or made this card liked to be well prepared.

[X] Dresser then closet then screen.
[X] Sit on the bed and gather yourself. You were lying about being fine, after all.

There is gravity here – or at least there is artificial gravity here, because you're currently carrying five pound of non-magnetic metal on your person – so walking to the dresser is effortless. The plush is very nice, and entirely dust free of course, while the veneer of the dresser is actual wood with a very light layer of enamel. Very expensive things for a place like this, unless they have nanotech fabrication facilities. Then again it is obviously a high class hotel so that isn't entirely surprising.

Le Centresse apparently isn't concerned about security for their dressers, for there are no locks and the upper drawer slides open easily. It contains, unsurprisingly, a small holoplate which turns on to reveal it as a library for the guest, courtesy of Le Centresse. The bottom drawer is slightly more helpful in providing two standard sized emergency jumpsuits, self-attaching. You haven't a need for either as of yet, and they're both very clearly designed for emergencies. Undoubtedly they have rescue beacons and alarms in case one should be donned.

The closet is more fruitful; clothing, mens and womens, what appears to be various forms of evening wear, casual wear, and exercise wear, all in two sizes, all labeled along the inside with the courtesy label. Toiletries for men and woman alike reside withing the closet as well, which gets you no closer to figuring out the identity of the maker of the card. The suit bag on the door, however, remedies that: a man, about ten inches taller than you, with identity card (more holoplate) stating he is Ivan Beritschoff, a Falladrian national of 46 years of age. Nothing further can be accessed without biological evidence of ownership. The refresher has more specific toiletries and a few other amenities, along with the toilet. All pristine of course. Not that you need more than a few flakes of skin or a single hair follicle. Or perhaps even less, if you want to put some effort into it.

You do love these high tech societies for just this reason.

The wine is a nice year, you suspect – though 3270 ÄÑ means little enough to you at the moment, your certain it's at least 20 years old. The hologlass on the wall takes up most of the desk space, and there are locks on the desk – most likely biologically coded as well. Those you do not want to play with until you have something to open them with, as they undoubtedly attached to nice security alarms. The holoscreen is showing about fifteen sets of news; three sections on fashion; and two on local time, weather and status (one for the station and the other for the planet Falladra). They speak and write a fairly common dialect of your native tongue, which is unsurprising – all are Shadows of the Real world – one you can adapt to speaking without accent in a few minutes of listening to it.

With the cursory examination done, and the recognition that your style of clothing is at least unremarkable, if a little ostentation for the era, you sit on the surprisingly firm bed, and take several deep, slow breaths as you let the anger and sadness you stifled only minutes ago bubble to the fore. You're not sure if you want to scream or to cry or to hit something, which is fairly typical when you're forced to deal with the truth.

The truth hurts quite a bit, and your stating of it upset one of the two people you actually look up to in – on – your world. Shaking, you let the rage and pain flood though you.

[] Bottle it up, contain it once more. There is time for release later.
[] Concentrate, and see if you can find some of your hosts D.N.A. In his clothing.
[] Spend some time looking at the planet below. It's a soothing image.
[] Let it out. It is always better to let it out when it needs out.

[X] Let it out. It is always better to let it out when it needs out.
[X] Concentrate, and see if you can find some of Ivan's DNA in his clothing.
[X] Spend some time looking at the planet below. It's a soothing image.

You close your eyes and take a slow, deep breath. Most people would assume that you were going to meditate, or practice some esoteric form of centering yourself. They are half right. It took you some time to understand this, but bottling up things doesn't really work for you. At one time, it was fine, but now you can't really afford to bottle up your emotions and pain.

Because when you lose it, you LOSE IT.

So you grit your teeth, unlock your body, and let the pain and anguish rage through your body and mind while you force yourself to sit very still.

The sitting still part minimizes the chances of you destroying anything important.

Your skin cracks, seethes, and boils away, your flesh roils and twists, your bones splinter and reform like burning glass thrown into ice water. Your bones becomes spines and talons, tearing open every joint, fingertip, and toetip. Your teeth elongate, tearing through your lips until your skull tears itself from your head while your flesh reaches out and draws your bones back in, even as your brains liquefy and coagulate along the crackling silver wires that your nervous system becomes before your blood vessels erupt from your twisting ropy lengths of gelid muscle to recapture it. Most of your internal organs are fighting amongst themselves, and the resultant undulating mass of internalized violence explodes from the open seams in your musculature.

Ten minutes later your sitting in the bed, breathing heavily, feeling much better than you would if you'd broken down and cried or screamed. The planet below looks like you feel – drifting infinitely slowly, clouds in wide bands with gentle, complex swirls, and delicate wisps of mist being dragged along the painted surface, calm, peaceful, serene in the universe. A few more minutes and you let a sigh slip through your pursed lips.

Pretty refreshing all told. You're pretty sure anyone who walks in on that is going to need therapy for years though.

With a sigh, you stand up and walk briskly over to the suit bag, and carefully begin examining it, particularly the bottom of it, and the cuffs and hemlines. It doesn't take long to find enough skin samples that you can Shapeshift parts of yourself into Mr. Beritschoff. You could attempt to become him in every physical manner if you wanted to....or even take on his mentality, if you dared. The mentality issue is dangerous – if his mind is particularly strong willed (and it must be if he is a Trump Artist) it could subsume yours temporarily. The locks on the desk are simply bioscanners – fingertips and maybe an eye or two is all you'd need.

[] Just the minimum.
[] Take on the full look.
[] Try his mind on for size, carefully.
[] You don't really need to snoop – he is an unwitting host after all.

Advanced Shapeshifting combined with a high Psyche is a very dangerous set of abilities on both sides of the equation. A high endurance means you can work with it longer and sustain more shifts more often.

Mind you, any of the advanced abilities are going to be on the high end of WTF OP Character .

[X] Take on the full look.

You slide your finger along the hem of the sleeve, picking up minute flakes of skin cells and dust. Closing your eyes you sensitize your skin to the materials, discarding the inorganic particulates and absorbing the D.N.A. Rich skin cells. Dessicated, but still viable for your purposes. You close your eyes, sorting through the three samples you have.

One is completely alien, and you study it then discard it, memorizing it for later examination. One is female, and that too is studied and discarded, though you note she is related to Ivan Beritschoff; only a single degree of separation, grand-daughter most likely, uncle possibly. Then there is the man himself. It doesn't take long to disassemble and replicate his D.N.A, nor to distribute it throughout your body, overwriting yours with his. The sensation is not unpleasant, though you do have to make a few adjustments, mainly in the area of body mass; you make up for this with decreased bone density, making a sturdier crystalline structure instead of frangible hollowing. Muscle mass is difficult, but by using a more soft muscle fiber, you gain the bulk of his body without the weight.

The entire process takes only minutes. You're still just as strong and tough, of course, which is far more to than humans, but you're not heavy as you look.

Activating a mirror function on the hologlass, you look at your smooth, broad chin, adding a bit of facial hair neatly trimmed, your heavy brow, and long dark hair. You sweep it to both sides as it was in the picture, and, and blink newly minted brown eyes. Ruddy skin, and definitely an Amberite. He's in his late two-hundreds, and healthy as an ox. Healthier, actually. You look suitably imposing, your adaptive clothing making you look handsomely dressed even by surprise.

Naturally, the desk unlocks for you when you open the latch and look at the inset holoplate. It opens to reveal more clothing, four sets of identification of the same style as the first you found, but under different names with different nationalities, job descriptions, and credit limits. The latter are all very high of course. If he has Pattern abilities, he could literally walk into Shadow, spend a week digging, and come up with billions in whatever valuables needed.

Sometimes you regret the path you followed, but then again, you can be one of five different rich men. Presumably, he's known in this hotel as Ivan.

A further perusal of the desk gives you several sets of documents, all technical, all pertaining to various corporate entities. A quick scan tells you everything you need to know. He's not performing corporate espionage, he's ~counter~espionage. Apparently digging up dirt on which corporations are trying to wreak havoc with his personally and shell company owned one. It looks like an interesting sort of hobby. A monocle, undoubtedly hologlass, personalized and attuned to his biometrics. Could be useful.

The second drawer yields much more interesting results.

A tabard in vert, and argent; Unicorn Rampant Dexter, with a ruby necklace and en-crowned in gilt. Armor of white ceramic – not modern for this age, but modern for your home. A broadsword, silver hilt with a sapphire inset, the pommel crown like and embossed with the seal of the White Duke. Not merely an Amberite – a noble from Amber. Not an elder, no, but certainly landed to bear that crest and wear white on his tabard....

It doesn't take a genius to figure out what happened. The oaf you took the deck from stole the deck from this man's young relative, a young lady. How interesting.

[] Leave everything as it is.
[] Take one of the less important identities and set up one of your own later.
[] Take nothing, leave the Trumps.
[] Take the best identity (plus monocle) and the sword.

[X] Take one of the less important identities and set up one of your own later.
[+] Take the young lady's form, take nothing but the absolute necessity.

The problem with high tech worlds is that you have to have an identity, especially when traveling. You have none. And since biometrics are commonplace, it is exceedingly difficult to avoid being tracked. Well, for people aside from yourself. You can keep up human forms indefinitely, even asleep, and you can change them as often as you like if they're not to wildly mass-different. It's hard to obtain mass, and the young lady's form more slight than your own, but that is an easier fix than trying to add mass.

You take the least important identity – not Ivan's, but a Mr. Benedict Schmidt, Associate of Neo-Human Resource Allocations – and leave everything else untouched. There is plenty of credit there to establish a couple of workign identities, and that will work just fine.

The good thing about highly industrialized societies is that there is always a complex criminal element as well. It follows humanity like influenza. Even Real people aren't immune to such nonsense.

Re-locking the desk, you check your clothing and make the minute adjustments necessary to match the identity on the holodent for Mr. Schmidt perfectly. You spend a moment memorizing the salient details, including the fact he has a 'daughter' Melanie aged nineteen. Then you look up the station map, memories those details carefully (which takes a much longer time, because you like knowing EVERYTHING about the place that is protecting you from the vacuum of space, regardless of your ability to survive it without a pressure suit) and take your leave.

You do keep the Trump deck though.

Finding the concierge desk is simple enough. Your deeper voice has a pleasant burr that is fun to talk with, and the looks you receive from the patrons say a great deal about this man. He is known, well liked, but not particularly approachable; the younger women adore him, and the middle-aged ones find him exciting enough to gossip about. The clerk, of course, it utterly polite and completely cool; she smells like she's using inhibitors of some sort to reduce her attraction to people at the counter.

“Excuse me Miss Ballanger....”

[] I need to create another identity set for my daughter. Could you assist me in this?
[] Could you make reservations for myself and my daughter at one one of your sister companies?
[] I have a friend who will be arriving, but I lack their exact information; could you help?
[] Could you arrange a shuttle flight to one of the other Lagrange Point Stations?

I am not hoping so, despite what people have said. It's going to be a mess either way.

As an aside, if I do not post everything selected immediately after, it will usually show up in the post after. Also, on occasion, the people the MC is dealing with may interrupt planned responses, which does not necessarily cancel them, but may or may not modify them appropriately. I lways try to integrate write in, such as in this post's beginning, but they may not become immediately apparent - for instance, it would be difficult trying to create an identity if you looked like the person you were creating the identity for.

I will be reposting this a a few other clarifications when thread resumes, on Monday.
