===============

You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

You stand at the docks alongside an elaborate escort - guards, servants, flags, the whole ensemble - to welcome your sister Nesta back to the capital. Under your gaze - and the gaze of the gawkers who came by to watch the show - royal marines march a line of captured pirates off the ship and into the carriages which will take them to their proper punishment.

On the ship's deck, your sister leans on her sword and oversees the proceedings.

"Let it be known that this shall be the fate of all those who stand against justice and who dare to harm the people Gwyrddarfordir!" Nesta's voice resounds throughout the docks and receive a swell of applause.

The marines drag the prisoners away and the ship's crew steps off the ship so the dockworkers can take care of the necessary maintenance.

"Welcome back, sister," you say. "How was your trip?"

"It was but a trivial matter!" Nesta plants her hands on her hips and beams proudly. Then she looks at your face and frowns a little. "Meirion, are you sick? Your face looks miserable."

"I've been busy," you say. "Lots of work to do in very little time and all that."

"You should take better care of yourself," Nesta says. "You're the youngest, so you can trust our royal brother and I to look after things!"

If only that were true.

Okay, so the crowd's a bit small. That's not unusual at the start of the thread, but since /qst/ is still a trial for me as well, I'll keep an eye out on participation in case I decide it's better to reschedule. In the meantime, I'll keep going to see if things pick up.

"I'll take that under advisement," you say, "but if anything, you're the one who should be taking a break."

"I won't waste time on such things!" Nesta says confidently. "The life of a royal should be devoted to battle and glory! It would be an insult to your great ancestors if I rested!"

"If you say so."

You return to the palace alongside your escort. Your father's audience chamber is emptied once he learns of your sister's return. The various unrelated courtiers leave, while high-ranking military advisers arrive to here your sister's report. Myrddin and Olwen arrive as well. They stand next to you in the back of the room while Nesta steps before the king.

"At least she made it back in one piece," Olwen says.

"Indeed," Myrddin says. "It would have caused such a headache if she had gotten injured or died."

"Let's just take comfort in the fact that things turned out alright instead of thinking about how they could have gone wrong," you say. "Good news is hard enough to come by these days."

"My daughter!" King Gerad laughs boisterously and beckons his daughter forward. "Tell me, how did your mission go?"

"Royal father, I completed my task without problem," Nesta says. "The pirates have either been killed or arrested. The people shall be plagued no more!"

"Excellent!" The king laughs once more. "It seems sending you really was the correct choice. This calls for a celebration!"

"Indeed, I believe we both have reason to celebrate," Prince Haul says. "Father, with your permission, I have an announcement to make."

"Oh?" The king turns towards the Crown Prince and raises an eyebrow. "What is it?"

It seems the Crown Prince has decided to publicize his lady love's existence. He must have waited until Nesta returned.

"So we'll finally see the truth of this mystery," Myrddin says. "I must say, it has been bothering me for some time."

"So long as my brother's happy, we'll find a way to deal with the consequences," you say.

"Of course we will," Myrddin says. "In fact, you could start by -"

"Don't you dare finish that sentence, Myrddin," you say. "I will end you."

Prince Haul stands before the court and bows. "Ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to announce that I intend to be married soon." A maid shyly steps out of the audience, and Haul wraps an arm around her. She blushes bright red at his touch. "This Mair, the love of my life. She has been my friend and companion for many years, and I wish to announce to all that I will make her my legal wife."

There are whispers and murmurs throughout the court. Nesta looks up at Prince Haul with unadulterated admiration, while your uncle chortles and smiles greedily; with the Crown Prince marrying a commoner, his position is now much more secure. The king loudly claps his hands to quiet the people down.

"Good, good! This is truly a joyous occasion! We must prepare a grand ceremony for the marriage of the Crown Prince!"

Prince Haul shakes his head immediately. "Father, we have no need for such a thing. A simple ceremony will be more than enough."

Oh, he thinks the wedding is for him and his lover. That's adorable. He's adorable.

No, the marriage is for you, and possibly Nesta, if she feels like finding a husband of her own. Royal weddings are one of the few occasions where all the important nobles from Gwyrddarfordir and its neighbours can meet, talk and negotiate. They're prime opportunities for trade and diplomacy, and they're useful to help the Crown Prince's younger siblings find marriage prospects of their own.

In fact, Myrddin is positively seething at Prince Haul's comments. He's grinding his teeth so loudly you can hear it and his hands are clenched into fists of rage.

Myrddin's a bit of a busybody, but you can understand his feelings this time. A wedding is an extremely important state event.

>[Sovereign/1d8] "Your highness, weddings are rare occasions. There needs to be a grand celebration."

"Your highness, weddings are rare occasions," you say. "We should hold a grand ceremony. It would be disrespectful to our people, our vassals and our peers if we snubbed them like this."

The king rubs his chin and thinks about your words. "That is true," he says. "I know your mother would like to come, and it has been too many years since I've seen her."

"Besides, it's traditional for the Crown Prince to take over the kingdom's major functions," you add. "The wedding preparations could give you the time you need to prepare and facilitate the transition."

"If you put it that way, a wedding does sound like a good idea," Prince Haul says. "Very well, we shall proceed with a celebration. I would like to give mother an excuse to come visit."

"It's settled then," King Gerad says. "I'll arrange for the grandest wedding in the kingdom's history for my eldest son! Hahahahaha!"

The advisers offer their congratulations to Prince Haul and his soon-to-be wife, as well as to Nesta for a successful campaign. She doesn't seem the least bit upset that her return has been overshadowed. If anything, she's quite pleased that Prince Haul waited for her to return before making his announcement.

"Brother, congratulations," you say. "I was starting to think it was time for you to get married."

"Ah, Meirion." Prince Haul smiles and clasps you on the shoulder. "Now that I'm becoming a responsible adult, Nesta and you are next. Speaking of which, I heard so rumours…."

Your smile stiffens.

"What rumours?"

"Something about you fighting a duel over a woman." Your brother looks at you seriously. "Meirion, you need to be careful about how you act. You can't be irresponsible about some things. No matter what, a man shouldn't play with a woman's heart."

"… I'll take that under advisement."

You disengage and perform a swift tactical retreat. Prince Haul has plenty of other people to keep him busy anyway. You won't be missed.

"That went surprisingly well," Myrddin says. "That wedding will certainly come in useful for my plans."

"So long as you remember they're supposed to be my plans, Myrddin," you say.

"It's a team effort," Myrddin says.

"In any case, we have other problems to deal with," Olwen says. "That seal of nobility?"

"It's being sold for auction tonight," Myrddin says. "We'll join the crowd and buy it. There's no other way."

"None that won't make too much of a mess anyway," you say. "We'll bring all the money I can spare and go under disguise."

"Very well, let me know when we're leaving," Olwen says. "I have some work to do."

To be exact, you all have work to take care of. You spend most of the day reading and signing documents. Fortunately, there are no problems that require your personal attention.

At sunset, Myrddin and Olwen arrive. You put on blank masks and plain cloaks and leave to the auction house. Myrddin shows the guards a token and they wave you in.

The auction is taking place in the basement of a luxury clothing store which belongs to your uncle. There is a small crowd, but it is heavily guarded. After all, all transactions must be made in cold, hard coin to protect everyone's anonymity. It's ridiculously heavy, but you don't have a choice in the matter. You sit at an inconspicuous spot in the middle of the room.

"How confident are you about this?" Myrddin asks.

"Relax, I know what I'm doing."

Your goal here is simple. You need to drive up the bids and make the other guests spend as much money as possible. That'll make it easier for you to purchase to Haearnty seal of nobility when it does come up.

The auction begins without any of the usual fanfare. A middle-aged man wearing plain black clothes and a simple velvet masks steps up on the stage and unveils an enchanted sword.

"A sword with an ice enchantment," the auctioneer says in a voice utterly devoid of enthusiasm. "Bids begin at 1000."

It looks like you'll have to do his work for him on top of everything else.

>[Intrigue/1d8] Make a sudden large bid to drive the price up quickly.
>[Merchant/1d8] Use small, incremental bids to subtly increase the price.
>[Enchantment/1d6] Make some positive comments about the sword's enchantment to drive up interest.

There's a psychology to auctions. So long as the price only goes up by a little, meeting the new bid just costs a little bit more. The trick is to make that little bit add up to a large amount. It's a lot like stoking a campfire.

You let the other customers get into it first. Whenever it seems as if the bidding is about to stop, you raise your hand to keep things going.

You quietly manipulate the auction as the price doubles, then triples. No one seems to notice anything wrong. It'd be different if someone put their foot down and made a large bid, but that won't happen for something as insignificant as an enchanted sword.

As the auction proceeds, the bidders start to drop out. That tells you who's wealthy, and who's just rich. The former might make credible bids for the seal of nobility, but the latter won't, so it's extremely useful information to have.

The bids stop after they reach five times the sword's original price. If the auctioneer is happy, he's not showing it.

"You're off to a good start," Myrddin says.

"This is just the beginning," you say. "We still have a few more."

The auctioneer removes the enchanted sword and replaces it with a luxurious - and absolutely immense - tapestry.

"This tapestry was imported from Parlan," the auctioneer says. "It was made by the royal weavers, and it is one of a kind. Bidding starts at ten thousand."

"The royal weavers, eh?" You speak just loud enough for the other guests to hear you. "Look at the white and blue thread along the border. This is one of the sacred tapestries; they're made by the three best weavers of any given generation. They're only made once every twenty years. Even the Caliph only has three in his palace, and one of them is on loan."

You raise your hand to make a bid. The other guests are certain to take notice of your words.

Your comments drive the bidding into a frenzy. If the mighty Caliph of Parlan only has three of these tapestries, how much would they be worth in Gwyrddarfordir?

The price quickly doubles, then triples. The guests try to use massive surges to force the competition out, but it doesn't work the least. You keep up with the bids to maintain the appearance of interest, but drop out once the price is multiplied by five. Even then, the bids keep coming until the winning bid outweighs the original price by a factor of ten and then some.

"And sold." The auctioneer pounds the table with his gavel. "Our next item is an original copy of King Iwan auk Gwyrren's war journals. The bidding begins at twenty thousand."

"Damn, your uncle must be really desperate for money if he's selling that," Olwen says. "It's almost a family heirloom."

You've memorized a copy of the journals, of course, but the original should be worth a fortune. King Iwan was the one to introduce professional soldiers and standing armies to Gwyrddarfordir several generations ago. The historical value of his war journal is incalculable, and while many of the tactics and strategies it contains are obsolete, its fundamental theory is still sound.

You calculate your bids to get the final price as high as possible. It's a little more difficult this time; the guests know how much this journal is worth, so there are some sudden jumps. However, you keep up with the bids and push them higher and higher until it becomes nigh-unaffordable. The auctioneer strikes the table once more when the bidding stops.

"Sold," the auctioneer says. "Now, we move on to our final item of the night. This is the seal of nobility House Haearnty. Bidding starts at a hundred thousand gold."

The customers mumble in displeasure. This is what they were waiting for - even if they are nobles themselves, it's always useful to have some sort of plausible deniability - but thanks to your efforts, they're left significantly poorer. Unless something goes horribly wrong, you have this in the bag. You just need to decide your strategy.

This is your uncle's fundraiser, and you don't want him to raise any funds. You'll have to do your best to keep the bidding as low as possible. In most cases, that means one massive bid that the other guests won't be able to match, but you can't go too high or too low without screwing yourself over.

I'm starting to like tg's dice more than this.
Rolling crits all the time sucks the fun out of it.

tg dice is better for shitstorms.

Did I miss something?

>>36709
Shitstorms, in proper amounts, can be enjoyable.
>>
>>36729
For the system used in this quest only 10+ are crits.
>>
>>36729
We can't get crits on a d8, d6, or d4 unless we fail. Dice rules says we need a 10+ to crit, regardless of dice size.
>>
>>36709
>>36729
I for one, am amused that all the fate tempting DID NOT result in failure.
>>
>>36765
Maybe the dice gods are happy with the new board?
>>
>>36776
The dice gods are anti-questfags, it seems.
>>
>>36729
Crits are only on 10+. I wanted mechanics that gave the players more control. Lower dice give you more XP, but higher dice area easier and can give you crits, which can make your future rolls easier. In straight d20, crits are just random, but with this system, they're a tactical option.

confused because the change wasn't mentioned before, but I like it.
>>
>>36812
It's in the pastebin. I probably should have mentioned it specifically when I moved over to /qst/, but I wasn't sure how much information I should put up. I didn't want to overload people with pointless stuff, so I just listed the basics.
>>
>>36830
Are you planning to do some small event whenever we get a level up? Like something showing that the prince improved in that area.

You let a few small bids go by and then drop a massive increase on everyone's heads. You can tell the other guests are all sweating. They want the seal, but they don't have much money left. They throw in a few other bids, but you slam them down immediately.

In the end, the price of the seal didn't even double. Although the other items sold at higher than expected prices, you estimate that, overall, your uncle suffered a loss. Oh, he still made plenty of money, but not as much as he could have made if you hadn't interfered. It might only be a drop in the bucket, but it's still a worthy effort on your part.

You quickly pay the auctioneer and confirm the seal is indeed real. You leave the auction house and return to the palace as quickly as possible. Olwen keeps a hand on her sword's hilt just in case, but you don't encounter any problems.

You put the seal under your people. It takes you a few hours to go to sleep and when you wake up, it feels as if you hadn't slept at all. You change into your more casual clothes and meet Myrddin and Olwen outside your room.

"I sent a messenger ahead," Myrddin says. "They'll be expecting us."

"Let's get this over with then," you say.

Ceri and Esyllt agreed to meet you for breakfast in a small teahouse. They try to hide how pleased they are to see you, but Ceri does a poor job of hiding it. You sit at their table and slide both the deed of the forest and the box containing House Haearnty's seal over to them.

"The deed of ownership to one forest, as well as the seal of nobility of House Haearnty," you say. "Just as promised."

"Thank you, your highness," Ceri says. She opens the box to check the seal and immediately puts in out of sight in one of her pockets. "I believe this is a sufficient demonstration of your good will."

"We'll find some way to make use of the forest, and House Haearnty's cooperation will make things much easier for us in the future," Esyllt says. "For the sake of the kingdom's stability and our profits, we promise not to cause trouble for the royal family so long as our relationship remains mutually beneficial."

"If there's anything we can do to help you, please let us know," Ceri says.

>"I'll keep that in mind, thank you."
>[Intrigue/1d8] "I could use your help to investigate Prince Aled. He needs money for something, but I don't know what."

>[Intrigue/1d8] "I could use your help to investigate Prince Aled. He needs money for something, but I don't know what."
Who knows what our good uncle is trying to do? Probably a good idea to try and find out.
>>
>>36857
I'm not too sure yet. It'll probably depend on the skill. The major advantage of leveling Merchant is that you can manage economies on a larger scale rather than just your (extensive) personal funds, but there are some plot points that need to happen before you can really get into that.

It's the same thing for Intrigue and Military. You can control an army of thousands if you need to, but it just hasn't come up yet.

Has our uncle ever done anything good for the kingdom?
>>
>>36979
He's probably not spineless in business dealings, so at least the merchants don't treat the royal family as chumps.

"There is something you could help me with," you say. "I bought that seal at an auction, but Prince Aled wouldn't have sold it unless he really needed the money. He's up to something, but I don't know what, and I need to find out."

The two women look at each other.

"That should be possible," Ceri says.

"If he's moving large amounts of coin, we'll hear about it somehow," Esyllt says. "I'll ask around and see what our people know."

"Thanks for the help," Myrddin says. "I'll have someone keep in touch."

"I hope we can conduct further business together in the future," you say.

You take your leave of Ceri and Esyllt and return to the palace while they and Myrddin's people investigate your uncle. Fortunately, it's still pretty quiet. There is some noise because of the Crown Prince's upcoming wedding, but it's all preliminary, and it's not like any of it poses a thread to the kingdom.

You're not too surprise when Myrddin knocks on your door and pushes it open. You're not surprised when you see his face looks like he's just returned from a funeral. He looks even worse than he did when he told you his people hadn't been able to steal the seal.

"How bad?" You ask.

"Bad," Myrddin says. "Prince Aled's been buying weapons, horses, medicines, non-perishable foods, and mercenaries. It's all in small amounts, and it's all done through surrogates, but between my spies and Esyllt's, we were able to put it together."

"So he's building an army," you say. "Do you think he's preparing for a civil war?"

"Yes, but not one in Gwyrddarfordir," Myrddin says. "He's been sending people to the Rosean border. It's not enough for an invasion, but it is enough to back a side in a hypothetical Rosean power struggle."

"And that would give him foreign support later on if he tries to claim my father's crown for himself," you say. "Do you have any news about the situation in Rosea?"

"I know who the factions are, but none of the specifics," Myrddin says. "From what I know, Prince Aled has some ties with a Rosean prince born from the king's second wife. His tie to the throne is weaker, so he might be going to war against the competition."

Rosea's far, but not that far. If you put together an army of your own, you could go to Rosea yourself and oppose your uncle's plans. You should be able to make it back with plenty of time to spare before your brother's wedding.

>"Rosea's politics aren't my concern at the moment."
>"Let's go to Rosea and see what my uncle's up to."

"Let's go to Rosea and see what my uncle's up to," you say. "We've already interfered with Olstren's internal matters. One more kingdom won't hurt."

"Should I plan a trip to Svekka, just in case?" Myrddin asks.

"Not until after my brother's wedding, at the very least," you say. "For now, focus on Rosea."

"We'll be at a disadvantage," Myrddin says. "We'll need some time to make our own preparations, and we won't be able to move openly."

"We'll plan accordingly," you say. "If my uncle's planning trouble, there's bound for us to be a chance for us to insert ourselves into the conflict. For now, go get Olwen. I'll need her advice on strategy. A report on Rosea would be useful as well."

"Yes, your highness."

You want to stop whatever it is your uncle's planning, but your priority is, and has always been, the kingdom's stability. If you can find a way to drum up support for yourself while you're there, you certainly won't pass it up.

And that's all for today. The complications from that critfail got you a night at the auction house and a foreign civil war, but overall, it's not a bad deal. You certainly got a nice chunk of XP out of it, at least.

It took some time to get the thread warmed up, but overall, I feel pretty good about the level of participation, so thanks for coming. The next thread will be Friday, May 6th at 7PM EDT. I'll see you all then.
